Director’s Biography
Born May 14, 1971, in New York City, Sofia Coppola is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter best known for her films The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation. The daughter of one of the most celebrated film directors in the twentieth century, Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia grew up in an artistic household, frequently visiting the sets of her father’s films as a child. When not shooting a film, Sofia’s family settles in Napa Valley, California, giving her and her siblings a breath away from the glamour of Hollywood. Sofia has delved into other creative fields from painting, photography, fashion design to acting; all of which play a part in her films. Sofia Coppola has won awards including Golden Globes, and received honors from the New York Film Critics Circle and at the Independent Spirit Awards. Sofia’s films have qualities that are deemed dream-like, sentimental and sophisticated.

Press Photography Interviews
+ “Saturated with atmosphere, more adept at observation than exposition, exquisitely attuned to her characters’ inner states.” —Gentlewoman
Press on Sofia
“Coppola has a command of film form that lends itself to recreating interior experience, to conjuring a tangible and affecting sense of mood and emotion through the everyday.” —BFI
+ “She has created such an individual cinematic imprint – a focus on not merely female stories but the feminine, in what can be read as an affective cinema about girlhood in an era of postfeminism which privileges girlish experience.” —OFFSCREEN.COM

“Delicate, quiet and sweet” but also “made of steel” and “unflappable”.” —BFI

Behind the Scenes: Somewhere (2010)
“The story is told as a memory, and to me that was a big element. It’s about looking back and piecing together memories. That’s why it’s made in a collage style of piecing together these memories to try to bring back these girls.”
Behind the Scenes: Somewhere (2010)
“I stayed there [Park Hyatt Hotel] during a “Virgin Suicides” promotional/press tour. It’s just one of my favorite places in the world. Tokyo is so hectic, but inside the hotel it’s very silent. And the design of it is interesting. It’s weird to have this New York bar…the jazz singer…the French restaurant, all in Tokyo. It’s this weird combination of different cultures.”
