DIRECTOR’S BIOGRAPHY
Born May 14, 1971, in New York City, Sofia Coppola is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter best known for her films The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation. The daughter of one of the most celebrated film directors in the twentieth century, Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia grew up in an artistic household, frequently visiting the sets of her father’s films as a child. When not shooting a film, Sofia’s family settles in Napa Valley, California, giving her and her siblings a breath away from the glamour of Hollywood. Sofia has delved into other creative fields from painting, photography, fashion design to acting; all of which play a part in her films. Sofia Coppola has won awards including Golden Globes, and received honors from the New York Film Critics Circle and at the Independent Spirit Awards. Sofia’s films have qualities that are deemed dream-like, sentimental and sophisticated.

The festival thread conveys the themes that are explored in Sofia’s films. The thread is a guide for the visual development of the festival.
FESTIVAL THREAD
Conflicted characters share a feeling of isolation from the outside world; a sense of deep questioning and confusion in the mundane of everyday life. In the end, they find meaning in small things and brief connection and moments. The theme of isolation is known to be prevalent in Coppola’s films. In The Virgin Suicides and The Beguiled, audience is brought close to a group of women who exist as outsiders. In Marie Antoinette, we see the emotional distance of a girl in opulence. In Somewhere, we follow a faded movie star and find a contrast between his days alone and his days spent with his daughter, Cleo, while in Lost in Translation, we see two individuals who are isolated due to language and culture barrier finding each other in a foreign land. Coppola’s films are driven not by plot but characters. She uses pastel colors, languid camera movements, while featuring modern soundtrack. In all her films, we see the character becoming, instead of being.
12
In Brief Film Festival
Based on the festival thread, the location and date for the festival was proposed; the edge of which the festival is to be presented to the audiences were synthesized.
FESTIVAL DETAIL
Location & Date
LACMA, Los Angeles, California. May 19, 2029. The dynamic Sofia has with Hollywood is reflective of her films; brief, sweet and nostalgic (considering she spent her childhood frequenting her father on set, while living a normal life in NAPA valley). The festival marks her 30th anniversary as a director.
Positioning
The festival too, is about becoming, more than it is about being. Other than the film screenings, it features exhibition rooms, which features part of the process; original scripts, exclusive behindthe-scene photographs, props and recreation of. It will feature a Sofia Coppola virtual reality room/ experience, taking audiences to different locations her films are set in, considering how locations take ona huge role in driving the film.
Audience
Annotated Process Journal
The audience is composed of women, men, etc. in contemplation of where they are going in life.

LOST IN TRANSLATION ANTOINETTE (2006) THE BLING RING (2013) ON THE ROCKS (2020) Sofia’s first short film is a 14-minute black and white 16mm piece called Lick the Star (1998). Her first feature film was an adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ book. Since her debut, Coppola has mainly shot her movies on film camera, except for The Bling Ring, which contextually called for more of a pop-culture approach.

Using the Title of the festival, the logotype was developed. Sketches were created, and then brought to the computer .
IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT

IDENTITY CHOSEN
The concept of the identity above was chosen and then refined. Several iterations of the logotype were created before settling on the typeface Neue Haas Grotesk. The chosen typeface reflects an existing vernacular of the NYC subway station, which in the later process is further adopted into the film festival system. The underscore between in and brief represents the longing and lingering shots thatare present in Coppola’s films. It was importantthat the identity has a demure quality to it,while keeping a casualness about it.

THE DOTS
The idea for The Dots was developed based on the “Inside Line Map” in the 1970 NYMTA Graphic Standards Manual. However, to create a more meaningful graphic element, The Dots was arranged to spell out the word ‘In Brief’ using the brail system. The Dots is used when the logotype does not appear on an individual product; therefore, The Dots takes the place of the logo to avoid over-using the logo.
