Happy in henna

The great debate

With the use of henna increasing in its popularity, teens have found that creating the intricate body art themselves to be a way to showcase their freedom of expression. Michelle Demo | Web Editor

Students debate their opinions about the topic of same-sex marriage and whether or not it should be legal in Michigan. enior Melinda Kothbauer and junior Michaela Carpenter met together to debate their beliefs on the topic of samesex marriage. Throughout the debate, both Carpenter and Kothbauer had to follow a set of guidelines throughout their arguments. This included answering three broad questions, and then going in-depth about their views on same-sex marriage. Â‘ÂŽČąÄ™Â›ÂœÂ?ČąÂšÂžÂŽÂœÂ?’˜—ȹ ÂŠÂœČąÂ?Â˜ČąÂ‹Â›Â’ÂŽÄš¢ȹŽ¥™•Š’—ȹ Â‘ŠÂ?ČąÂ?‘Ž’›ȹ ’—Â?Â’Â&#x;Â’Â?ÂžÂŠÂ•ČąÂœÂ?Š—ŒŽœȹ ÂŽÂ›ÂŽÇ°ČąÂŠÂ—Â?ČąÂ?Â˜ČąÂŽÂĄÂ™Â•ÂŠÂ’Â—ČąÂ?‘Žȹ‹Ž—ŽęÂ?ÂœČą of their beliefs. After a coin toss, Carpenter was given the chance to argue her stance on same-sex –Š››’ŠÂ?ÂŽČąÄ™Â›ÂœÂ?ÇŻ Michaela Carpenter: Well, I do believe that homosexual relationships are wrong, and believe that it is a sin. I believe in the Bible and it to be true, and that we need to obey what it says. In the Bible, it does say that homosexuality is a sin; however, I do not believe that those who are participating in homosexual relationships need to be treated poorly. They need to be treated with love, kindness, and respect. But that does not mean we need to condone their actions. It is very important to treat them just like any other human being, but still recognize that their behavior is wrong. [We need] to address that, and help them to work through it, instead of just criticizing them for it. I think there needs to be a balance between the two. I believe that relationships need to be between one man and one woman. That being said, it is a sin, and it needs to be addressed, and I do think that those participating in that need to stop behavior, and participate in other behaviors. Melinda Kothbauer: I believe that gay marriage should be legalized because we live in America. Our constitution guarantees equal rights for all our citizens, and I think that samesex couples should be able to publicly celebrate their commitment in the same way hetero couples do. The reason so many people are against it is because of their religion. You have a right to your opinion, and you have a right to believe what you believe; but, that does not mean that you can infringe on other people’s rights because of that religious belief. It allows for people to celebrate their commitment and

he shiny henna pen glides further down young Nimra Jawed’s hand as her friend continues work on her henna design. Jawed holds her hand still as the brown and green mixture comes out of the pen, creating intricate designs on her skin. Soon, Jawed will be moving from Pakistan to America, and it will be her turn to learn the craft of henna. She will continue to practice this art form well into her teen years. “It’s been quite a while,â€? Jawed said. “I was ›ŽŠ••¢ȹ•’Ĵ•Žȹ Â‘Ž—ȹ ČąÂœÂ?Š›Â?ÂŽÂ?ČąÂ?˜’—Â?ȹ‘Ž——Šǯȹ Â?Č‚ÂœČąÂ™ÂŠÂ›Â?Čą of our culture, it’s not something that I started by a trend or something, and it’s always been there.â€? Jawed is not the only teenager in Midland to practice henna. A growing number of teens have been forgoing professional designs and creating the art themselves. Henna is a temporary dye created from the leaves of the mignonette tree, and is crushed into a powder. Henna is then combined with an acidic base such as lemon juice, strong tea, or eucalyptus oil. This combination forms a paste that will be used to paint intricate designs onto skin. “I went out with my friends to a craft store. We got a kit and we made the henna ourselves,â€? junior Amelia Gullo said. ÂžÂ•Â•Â˜ČąÂ‘ÂŠÂ?ČąÂ?›’ŽÂ?ČąÂ?˜’—Â?ȹ‘Ž——ŠȹÂ?Â˜Â›ČąÂ?Â‘ÂŽČąÄ™Â›ÂœÂ?ČąÂ?’–Žȹ this past summer, and immediately fell in love. “[My friend] and I made a summer bucket list of things we wanted to do and try,â€? Gullo said. “So we were like, ‘Oh let’s do henna on

ourselves!â€? The designs that Gullo created ranged from Mickey Mouse to gaming symbols, and all the way to a Hindu symbol of peace. Along with Gullo, former Midland High student Annamarie Â’Â•Â•Â’ÂŠÂ–ÂœČąÂŽÂ—Â“Â˜¢ÂœČąÂ™Â›ÂŠÂŒÂ?’Œ’—Â?ČąÂ‘ÂŽÂ—Â—ÂŠÇ°ČąÂœÂ™ÂŽÂŒÂ’Ä™ÂŒÂŠÂ•Â•¢ȹ doing culturally traditional designs. “It all started when I went to my grandma’s house for the summer,â€? Williams said. “She’s the one who got me started on henna, because she began running her own small business  Â’Â?Â‘Â’Â—ČąÂ‘ÂŽÂ›ČąÂ‘Â˜Â–ÂŽČąÂ?˜’—Â?ČąÂ?‘ŽȹÂ?ÂŠÄ´Â˜Â˜ÂœČąÂ?Â˜Â›ČąÂ?›’Ž—Â?ÂœÇŻČ„Čą Williams’ favorite design style to try is the Arabic henna, as well as bridal henna designs. These designs typically have intricate swirling

Because of this, Jawed Â‘ÂŠÂœČąÂ‘ÂŠÂ?ȹ‘Ž——ŠȹÂ?Â˜Â—ÂŽČąÂœÂ’Â—ÂŒÂŽČąÂœÂ‘ÂŽȹ ÂŠÂœČąÂŠČąÂ•Â’Ĵ•ŽȹÂ?’›•ǯ Similar to Jawed, Williams practiced her designs, and has been doing henna for many years. One way that Williams has applied her henna designs to other aspects of her life is through her crafts and T-shirt designs. Williams would take bleach pens, and practice henna on shirts, the same way she would on her arms or legs. Unlike Williams and Jawed, Gullo doesn’t practice henna for her art. Instead, she sees it

Williams said. “Some companies will try to sell you black henna, [but] Â?Â˜ČąÂ—Â˜Â?ȹ‹ž¢ȹÂ’Â?Ç°ČąÂ˜Â›ČąÂ?ÂŽÂ?ȹŠȹÂ?ŠĴ˜˜ȹ Â’Â?Â‘ČąÂ‹Â•ÂŠÂŒÂ”ČąÂ‘ÂŽÂ—Â—ÂŠÇŻČą Black henna will burn your skin and leave awful scar tissue.â€? Jawed has heard similar tales about nonnatural henna, and agrees that the best route for doing henna, would be to buy the mixture that has no chemicals. This original henna, is an organic mixture made without any color enhancing chemicals. Color enhancers are used in order to make the henna darker. Wanting to avoid these chemicals, Jawed uses the original henna mixture when creating her art. “The other ones have a lot of chemicals that are not good for our skin,â€? Jawed said. “I’ve heard many stories: people getting allergies, Â˜Â›ČąÂ?ŽĴ’—Â?ȹ’—Â?ÂŽÂŒÂ?ÂŽÂ?ÇŻČą Â˜Čą ȹ™›ŽÂ?Ž›ȹÂ?‘Žȹǽ‘Ž——ŠǞȹÂ?‘ŠÂ?Čą doesn’t have a lot of chemicals.â€? Due to henna’s natural recipe being safe for the skin, Williams believes that as long as people stray away from chemical enriched recipes, that they will probably enjoy having henna done. “I encourage anyone to give henna a try,â€? Williams said. “It’s fun, and easy to do, without the pain of a real tattoo. While I understand that we can’t assume that’s true for everybody, I think that it does show that it will add to the problems we are already seeing in marriages, families, and relationships. Because you are not given equal rights as someone else. There are many benefits, both psychological, as I expressed, and just morally for society to accept gay marriage, and to legalize it. In a country where we have the privilege of practicing religion, or not practicing religion, we need something to go by, but yet if we go by the Bible, then aren’t we excluding those who follow the Torah, and all these other religious texts, and religious beliefs. I see what [Michaela’s] saying, being it a useful tool, and for a lot of things, a good place to start. But religion is inherently about morality, and so I think that what you say is true. It is a valuable place to go to for guidance. But yet, we can’t base it solely on that for our country.

he shiny henna pen glides further down young Nimra Jawed’s hand as her friend continues work on her henna design. Jawed holds her hand still as the brown and green mixture comes out of the pen, creating intricate designs on her skin. Soon, Jawed will be moving from Pakistan to America, and it will be her turn to learn the craft of henna. She will continue to practice this art form well into her teen years. “It’s been quite a while,” Jawed said. “I was ¢ȱ Ĵ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ǯȱ Ȃ ȱ ȱ of our culture, it’s not something that I started by a trend or something, and it’s always been there.” Jawed is not the only teenager in Midland to practice henna. A growing number of teens have been forgoing professional designs and creating the art themselves. Henna is a temporary dye created from the leaves of the mignonette tree, and is crushed into a powder. Henna is then combined with an acidic base such as lemon juice, strong tea, or eucalyptus oil. This combination forms a paste that will be used to paint intricate designs onto skin. “I went out with my friends to a craft store. We got a kit and we made the henna ourselves,” junior Amelia Gullo said. ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱę ȱ ȱ this past summer, and immediately fell in love. “[My friend] and I made a summer bucket list of things we wanted to do and try,” Gullo said. “So we were like, ‘Oh let’s do henna on

ourselves!” The designs that Gullo created ranged from Mickey Mouse to gaming symbols, and all the way to a Hindu symbol of peace. Along with Gullo, former Midland High student Annamarie ȱ ¢ ȱ ȱ ǰȱ ę ¢ȱ doing culturally traditional designs. “It all started when I went to my grandma’s house for the summer,” Williams said. “She’s the one who got me started on henna, because she began running her own small business ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ĵ ȱ ȱ ǯȄȱ Williams’ favorite design style to try is the Arabic henna, as well as bridal henna designs. These designs typically have intricate swirling

This original henna, is an organic mixture made without any color enhancing chemicals. Color enhancers are used in order to make the henna darker. Wanting to avoid these chemicals, Jawed uses the original henna mixture when creating her art. “The other ones have a lot of chemicals that are not good for our skin,” Jawed said. “I’ve heard many stories: people getting allergies, ȱ Ĵ ȱ ǯȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱǽ Ǿȱ ȱ doesn’t have a lot of chemicals.” Due to henna’s natural recipe being safe for the skin, Williams believes that as long as people stray away from chemical enriched recipes, that they will probably enjoy having henna done. “I encourage anyone to give henna a try,” Williams said. “It’s fun, and easy to do, without the pain of a real tattoo. A white brick building is tucked away next to the Amish Reflections furniture store, ǰȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ǰȱę ȱ knives, and ancient Japanese masks. A large black punching bag hangs from the ceiling in the corner. By the window are green and brown folding chairs that provide a viewing space for parents. Six students ranging in age from early teens to late forties stand in front of two teachers. The men and women stand in silence with a serious look on their faces. They begin stretching, counting in Japanese as they go. A sudden burst of laughter occurs after a sparring demonstration which consisted of a flurry of blows brings the room to life. The students and teachers -each called sensei- divide into two lines, face each other and prepare to spar. Senior Michael Roof and his brother begin a ę ȱ ȱ ȱ ǰȱ ȱ ǯȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱĚ ¢ǰȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ǯȱ A middle aged student begins sparring with Roof, and working on self-defense. The middle aged man comes at Roof, and puts an orange plastic gun to his right temple. Roof grabs the man’s wrist and manages to get the gun out of his hands. The sensei coaches Roof from the side, telling him to grab the gun, not the man’s wrist. Roof has been practicing martial arts for ten ¢ ǰȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱę ȱ¢ ǯȱ ȱ began karate for three reasons. He was interested in martial arts, he wanted to be more athletic,

and he wanted to learn self-defense. ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ǯ Roof found encouragement to get his black ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ȱę ȱ Ȭ on-one with actor and martial arts expert, Sensei Tadashi Yamashita. Tadashi has an annual karate seminar at the Midland Resort. This usually consists of a sparring ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱę ȱ Tadashi. “No one else in the seminar wanted to go against him so I volunteered.” Roof said. “Then we sparred for about a minute.” ȱ ȱ ǰȱ ȱę ȱ ¢ȱ Ě ȱ him to continue on with karate, and eventually ȱ ȱę ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱŘŖŗŘǯȱ ȱ ȱ experienced many obstacles during his ten years of karate, the biggest of which was believing in himself. “At times when I would test for my next belt, I would think that I was not prepared enough, or that what I knew was incorrect,” Roof said. “My ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ěǰȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ę ǯȄ For the past four and a half years, junior CJ Palmieri has been practicing the martial art of Shorin-ryu, a karate style developed in shaolin temple of China. Students strive to succeed in programming inside and outside of the classroom. Through club, class, and personal preparation, they have gone above

hey’re not your stereotypical geek squad. They’re simply students who have found a place in the school that challenges them: creatively, analytically, and competitively. They are programmers. As defined by computer science teacher Robert Fox, Programming Club is a prime example of a welcoming environment of ‘geeks’ working on something they love – coding. “[They’re] not your stereotypical quoteunquote ‘geeks,’” Fox said. “I think anybody in the class from Varsity football player all the way to hardcore gamer would probably be forced to admit they’re a geek, and I would hope everybody’s a geek about something, whether it’s programming or journalism or whatever it ǯȱ ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ȱ ȱ Ĵ ǰȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ĵ ȱ ȱ ǯȄ In order to accommodate the variety of students in his programming classes, Fox Ĵ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ȃȱ ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ȱ ǯȱȱ ȱ ȱ Ĵ ȱ ȱ ȱ his students for college and career lifestyles by ensuring that the students work with each other ȱ ȱ ȱę ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ǯȱ ȃ ȱ ¢ȱ ǰȱ ȱ Ȃ ȱ ȱ ȱę ȱ¢ ȱ ȱ into - teamwork is key,” Fox said. “It used to be, 20-30 years ago, that computer programming ȱ Ĵ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ¢ ǯȱ Ȃ ȱ ȱ not true anymore. Now, most of the work spaces are open, and you are expected to work with people, to minimize the likelihood of mistakes, and increase the clarity of thought.” Programming club began in 2005, and gradually increased in size from there. The club has now competed in national and even global competitions. They have been coming in second behind a team from Romania for the past few years. “[The club began] when a group of my students approached me and decided they wanted to do this competitively,” Fox said. “I don’t think I ever would have thought that students would have found this particular activity to be fun - at least not that early on in my career. But they pushed me into doing it and got it started, and it’s only grown since that time.” The club meets every Thursday at 6 p.m., where the students get into groups of three, all sharing one computer. Fox passes out a packet with practice problems from old competitions,

puts 100 points on the board, and starts a timer. One student starts coding on the computer and the other two begin hand writing code for when Ȃ ȱ ȱ ǯȱ ȱ ¢ȱę ȱ ȱ ȱ ǰȱ one point is lost. This has aided students in their skill development and ability to work through problems quickly. The students work on strategy and try the problems that are going to get the most points up on the board first, all the while trying to ignore the ones that take too long. One of the most important aspects of programming club is time management. “Mr. Fox’s theology is that once you get to the computer you should only be typing what ¢ Ȃ ȱ Ĵ ȱ ǰȄȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ǯȱ “You shouldn’t stop and have to think about things when you’re at the computer because that’s going to waste time.” After the students began competing, Fox was

able to see their appreciation for competitive programming grow, and as Purtill explains, most of the reason for this was the mental challenge of programming. “I really like how [the competition] forces you to break down your thinking step by step,” Purtill said. “Coming up with how to solve a problem, like the abstract idea of how to solve something, isn’t hard. It’s coming up with a step-by-step routine of how to do it, and how ȱ ȱ ȱ ě ¢ǯȄ While the challenging atmosphere is an alluring aspect of the programming club, Fox acknowledges that it can have its more stressful moments. Dealing with the stress of not knowing the answer to a problem right away is important to be comfortable with the students’ futures. “If my students don’t see it in the class or the club, they will see it in college. There will be that point of ‘I just don’t know what to do.’ You persevere, and you problem solve, and you get it right, and that’s so intensely

Grunder finds programming helpful in other areas of her life as it makes her more of a well-rounded thinker. “[Programming] has taught me a lot about patience, perseverance, and problemsolving. When a program doesn’t work, I’m ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ǰȱę ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ it isn’t working, and find and try potential solutions until it works,” Grunder said. “This has especially carried over to my duties as chairperson and stage manager in the drama club. I think nationally, the female population of computer scientists is between 10-20 percent, so Ȃ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ¢ ǰȱ ȱ Ȃ ȱę ¢ȱ Ĵ ȱ my intro class up to 50 percent girls,” Fox said. In order to help the number of women in technology grow, the National Council for ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ȱ ě ȱ ȱ ȱ award to women looking to pursue a future in technology. “Mr. Fox strongly encouraged all the girls in ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ȱ ȱ NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Award,” Grunder said. “This is a really cool award because not only does it give money for college, but it also provides the opportunity to gain a lot of networking connections in the industry.” ȱ ȱ ¡ȱ ȱ ǰȱ ȱ ȱ Reeves notices the gender gap, and also wishes more females would join the club. “There’s not much we can do to change it, but programming club tends to be more male heavy, but there’s a lot of opportunities that Mr. Fox presents to his girl students,” Reeves said. “ I’m ȱ ¢ ȱ ȱ Ȃ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ĵ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ girls, but it’d be nice to be gender balanced.” Reeves goes on to explain what makes a good programmer isn’t based on gender, but how well one can work with computers. “There’s no rule saying that guys have to ȱ Ĵ ȱ ǰȱ ȱ ȱ Ȃ ȱ ¢ȱ of girls that would be good at programming,” Reeves said, “Programming isn’t, ‘are you good at computers?’ It’s ‘are you good at problem solving?’” F

But, when they’re learning programming, it’s really important that I say no to them, because I have to let students who have the ability to do it, do it.” With the experience gained from self-

The biggest struggle with this story was ensuring that the Binary would not overlap the words too much that they weren’t seen. I was also crunched on this as my design scheme changed multiple times before I settled on this clean layout with a fun play-on-fonts approach.

As staff members gathered around, the Mesitersingers deliver a compelling ™Ž›Â?Â˜Â›Â–ÂŠÂ—ÂŒÂŽČąÂ?Â˜Â›ČąÂŠȹ Â˜Â–Š—ȹ Â’Â?‘ȹ•’Ĵ•ŽȹÂ?’–ŽȹÂ?Â˜ČąÂ•Â’Â&#x;ÂŽÇŻ Meister teacher Jennifer Brenneman shares this heartwarming experience. “A few years ago, one of our music parents bought a Singing Valentine for a friend who was in the hospital and wasn’t expected to live much longer,â€? Brenneman said. “I happened to be driving the girls group that was doing the delivery. The woman’s family was there, and all the nurses. She was so touched that the girls sang her another song and she asked to hug each one of them. It was really beautiful, there wasn’t a dry eye anywhere. That’s why we do what we do - those connections are what make music so special.â€? Singing Valentines, as Brenneman described, have been an ongoing tradition that started long before she began teaching at MHS. This popularity is because of the Singing Valentines unique way to express love and appreciation. “Basically they are a singing telegram,â€? Brenneman said. “The Meistersingers split up into groups of guys and groups of, and girls. All the groups prepare three songs. There are songs you can send to someone of a romantic nature and songs that you can send to friends, grandparents etc.â€?

ÂžÂ—Â’Â˜Â›Čą ÂŽÂ’ÂœÂ?Ž›œ’—Â?Ž›ȹ •’Šȹ Š—’Ž•œ˜—ȹ ÂŠÂœČąÄ™Â›ÂœÂ? introduced to Singing Valentines after her mother received one as a gift while Danielson was in middle school. ČąČƒ Â‘ÂŽČąÄ™Â›ÂœÂ?Čą ’—Â?’—Â?Čą Š•Ž—Â?’—Žȹ ČąÂœÂŠ ȹ ÂŠÂœȹ Â‘Ž— [my brother ] Noah sent one to my mom,â€? Danielson said. “The group came to our house and sang in our kitchen. I was in 7th grade, and was taken away by their lovely voices – and how cute high school boys were compared to middle schoolers.â€? The Meistersingers spend two days performing the Singing Valentines. When Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday, like this year, they split delivery into two days. A school delivery day, then a business delivery day for people that are outside of school or at a business. For senior Meistersinger Emily Long, this time can be very stressful. “We have a limited amount of time to perfect a song and choreography to sing numerous times in front of many people,â€? Long said. “It’s usually fun and rather upbeat working with the ladies and working through the songs, but everyone has those days where we need to buckle down, drop the chitchat, and work. Those are the most stressful moments.â€? The other kids get to experience what we do and prepare ÂœÂ˜ČąÂ‘ÂŠÂ›Â?ČąÂ?Â˜Â›ČąÄ™Â›ÂœÂ?ȹ‘Š—Â?Ç°Č„Čą ˜—Â?ČąÂœÂŠÂ’Â?ÇŻČąČƒ ČąÂ”Â—Â˜ ȹÂ?‘ŠÂ?Čą when I was a freshman, seeing these Singing Valentines intrigued me so much that it brought me this much closer to becoming a part of this family I love.â€? On average, the Meisters gain around $2,500 for their Singing Valentines. This money goes towards their annual end-of-the-year trip. “This year we plan to go to Nashville, Tennessee,â€? senior Meistersinger Sam Nowak said. “It is a fund-raiser, so the more money we Â?ÂŽÂ?ČąÂ?‘Žȹ‹ŽĴŽ›ǯȹ ČąÂ•Â˜Â?ȹŠ—Â?ČąÂ?‘Žȹ•ŽÂ?Â?˜Â&#x;ÂŽÂ›ČąÂ–Â˜Â—ÂŽ¢ȹ ÂŽČą have from our trip goes towards the rest of the vocal program at Midland High as well. The female’s songs ÂŠÂ›ÂŽČąČƒ ›ŽŠ–ȹŠȹ ’Ĵ•Žȹ Â›ÂŽÂŠÂ–Ç°Č„ČąČƒ Ȃ••ȹ ÂŽČą ‘Ž›ŽȹÂ?Â˜Â›Čą You,â€? and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.â€? The songs that the Meisters pick are hopefully as great a variety as the people who purchase them. “The people that buy Singing Valentines can ›Š—Â?ŽȹŠ—¢ Â‘Ž›ŽȹÂ?Â›Â˜Â–ČąÂŠČąÂ”Â’Â?ČąÂ?ŽĴ’—Â?ČąÂ‘Â’ÂœČąÂ–Â˜Â–ČąÂŠČą cute gift or an old man buying his wife a song,â€? Nowak said. “There isn’t really one group of people that buys more of them.â€? Along with the variety in buyers, the Meistersingers may receive various requests to correlate with the Singing Valentine. “We can deliver notes, from anonymous, ̘ ÂŽÂ›ÂœÇ°ČąÂ™Â˜ÂŽÂ–ÂœÇ°ČąÂŠÂ—¢Â?‘’—Â?ČąÂ’ÂœČąÂ™Â˜ÂœÂœÂ’Â‹Â•ÂŽǰȹ ÂŽČąÂŒÂŠÂ—ȹŽÂ&#x;Ž—ȹ substitute the person’s name into the song if it is appropriate for that song,â€? Danielson said. While these requests are expected, the Meisters have had unique requests to coincide with a Singing Valentine along the years. However, the Meisters do not need a request in order to make a Signing Valentine special. ÂŠÂ—Â’ÂŽÂ•ÂœÂ˜Â—ČąÂ›ÂŽÂ–ÂŽÂ–Â‹ÂŽÂ›ÂœČąÂŠČąÂ–Â˜Â–ÂŽÂ—Â?ČąÂ?Â›Â˜Â–ČąÂ‘ÂŽÂ›ČąÄ™Â›ÂœÂ?Čą Singing Valentine trip where the Meistersingers were able to brighten the day of multiple people

by simply singing numerous songs. “Our group went to visit a former Meister who was in the hospital,â€? Danielson said. “It was a surprise visit. The ladies at the front desk wouldn’t let us go up until we sang them a song. We sang “You Raise Me Upâ€? and the volunteers were crying. They let us go up, but we couldn’t see our friend. Anyway, we came back two other times trying to deliver the valentine, each time  ÂŽČąÂœÂŠÂ—Â?ȹŠȹÂ?’쎛Ž—Â?ČąÂœÂ˜Â—Â?ČąÂ?Â˜Â›ČąÂ?‘ŽȹÂ?›˜—Â?ČąÂ?Žœ”ǯȹȹ Â?Čą was cool that we had a reputation, because by the time we sang our third song a crowd had gathered. I looked into the balcony above the Â?›˜—Â?ČąÂ?ÂŽÂœÂ”ČąÂŠÂ—Â?ȹ’Â?ȹ ÂŠÂœČąÄ™Â•Â•ÂŽÂ?ȹ Â’Â?Â‘ČąÂœÂ–Â’Â•Â’Â—Â?ČąÂ?ÂŠÂŒÂŽÂœČąÂŠÂœČą  ÂŽČąÂœÂŠÂ—Â?ČąČƒ Š¢ȹŠȹ ’Ĵ•Žȹ ›Š¢ÂŽÂ›ČąÂ?Â˜Â›Čą Â˜ÂžÇŻČ„Čą Â‘Â˜ÂœÂŽČąÂ?ÂŠÂŒÂŽÂœČą and the excitement we could bring to patients day was superb. It is the best feeling to love on other people.â€? Danielson and Long both have Singing Valentine memories involving the song “Say Šȹ Â’Â?Â?•Žȹ ›Š¢ÂŽÂ›ČąÂ?Â˜Â›Čą ˜žDzČ„ČąÂ‘Â˜ ÂŽÂ&#x;Ž›ǰȹ ˜—Â?Č‚Âœȹ ÂŠÂœČą memorable for the comedic property of it rather than the sentimental. “We were performing for Michael Adams in his ꛜÂ?ČąÂ‘Â˜ÂžÂ›Čą —Â?Â•Â’ÂœÂ‘Čą ȹ‹Ž•’ŽÂ&#x;ŽǰȹŠ—Â?ȹ ÂŽȹ ÂŽÂ›ÂŽČąÂœÂ’—Â?’—Â?Čą Čƒ Š¢ȹŠȹ ’Ĵ•Žȹ ›Š¢ÂŽÂ›ČąÂ?Â˜Â›Čą Â˜ÂžÇŻČą ÂŽȹ ÂŽÂ›ÂŽČąÂŠÂ•Â•ČąÂ›ÂŽÂŠÂ?¢ȹÂ?Â˜Â›Čą Â’Â?ČąÂ‹ÂŽÂŒÂŠÂžÂœÂŽČąÂ?‘’œȹ ÂŠÂœČąÂ˜ÂžÂ›ČąÂ?ŠÂ&#x;˜›’Â?ÂŽČąÂœÂ˜Â—Â?Dzȹ ÂŽČąÂ™Â›ÂŠÂŒÂ?’ŒŽÂ?Čą it a lot, made sure the choreography was correct and everything, we were set. Then we actually started singing,â€? Long said. “We got through most of it before all 6 girls in my group had a mini brain-blank and forgot the next part. We just sang what we did know until we could jump back into the actual song. Everyone in the room loved it, mainly because they couldn’t tell we messed up, but afterwards all of us were laughing at our mistake. Regan Danner said to me, ‘good thing we knew him!’ It made it slightly less embarrassing, but never the less. At least we all knew the song after that!’ While junior Meistersigner Allie Williams’ favorite memory of Singing Valentines does not incorporate the same song as Long and Danielson, it does encompass the family-like bond that the groups grow when rehearsing. Due to their individual rehearsing schedules and locations, the Meisters don’t get to see each other perform their routines before distributing the valentines. Williams believes that the moment she was able Â?Â˜ČąÄ™Â—ÂŠÂ•Â•¢ȹÂœÂŽÂŽČąÂ?Â‘ÂŽČąÂ›ÂŽÂœÂ?ČąÂ˜Â?ČąÂ?‘Žȹ ÂŽÂ’ÂœÂ?ÂŽÂ›ÂœČąÂ™ÂŽÂ›Â?˜–ȹ ÂŠÂœȹȹ her favorite memory from last year. “All the groups met [at the Riverside Retirement Home] and we all sang something, so each group sang a different song and we performed in front of all the people in the retirement home,â€? Williams said. It was adorable. I hadn’t seen ÂŽÂ&#x;Ž›¢Â‹Â˜Â?¢ȹœ’—Â?ȹŠ••ȹÂ?‘ŽȹÂ?’쎛Ž—Â?ČąÂœÂ˜Â—Â?ÂœČąÂ‹ÂŽÂ?Â˜Â›ÂŽÇ°ČąÂ•Â’Â”ÂŽČą all the groups together and all there black dresses. The guys were seriously so cute, and all the girls were fabulous. I hadn’t seen all the choreography yet so it was really cool to see everything put together, and everybody really enjoyed it.â€? F

This production week for this issue overlapped my show-week, and as such caused me to start the cassette illustration at home. That illustration alone took 7 hours. Overall, the goal for this was to not look like a pink mess like my last one, and resemble Guardians of the Galaxy.
