WHAT’S POPPIN SUNNIES!

My name is Michelle Kim and I have been given the honor of serving the sunny Division 30 South as DIVISION NEWS EDITOR for the 2021-2022 term! I am beyond excited for what we have in store for this term and I hope you are too! Words can’t describe how honored I am to have this opportunity to be your News Editor! To introduce myself further, I am from Whitney High School and am an incoming senior. I joined Key Club in my freshman year, and have served my home club as Historian/Tech Editor and Bulletin Editor. You may have also seen me serve as one of your Division Executive Assistants last term alongside our sunny LTG Christina Nguyen. As our Summer vacation is just around the corner, I hope that you are able to end off this school year strong! And as we ease into the summer, hopefully there will be more opportunities to see each other in person. But in the meantime, be sure to be active with your service, stay healthy, and get vaccinated if you can! In this issue of The Yellow Pages, you can meet the new Division 30 South Leadership Team, revisit DCON 2021, and get a recap of our past events. I hope you enjoy this newsletter! :D I hope to get to know all of you soon and BEE sure to read my future newsletters! <33 SUN-cerely,

LETTER FROM YOUR LTG + THE 2021-2022 EXECUTIVE ASSISTANTS | 02 Hello Suns, Welcome back to another edition of the Yellow Pages! I'm extremely proud and excited for what the term holds
for us, as we continue our Key Club journeys through this pandemic. By the time that you read this, I know without a doubt that you all aced AP exams and hopefully finals didn’t stress you out too much. With summer approaching, remember to take the time to take care of yourself, try out new hobbies, and go outside to get sun (we are the 30 south suns after all). As the vaccine is quickly reaching everyone, hopefully everyone will be fully vaccinated by the end of summer. With that being said, in-person events will be happening again!! There’s so much that your home board officers, the DLT, and I have in-store for you this term, so I’m more than excited to return to the energetic socials, DCMs, service events, etc. At this moment, all high schoolers are eligible to receive the vaccine, so make an appointment if you haven’t yet!! I extremely want the transition back to in-person events to be as smooth and as safe as possible, which I can’t do without the help of all of YOU. I can’t wait to see all of YOUR beautiful faces again, BUT until then, make sure that you stay updated with your club, prioritize your health, and the wait will definitely be worth it <33 SUN-cerely,

chri ina nguyen

Zoom meetings, AJ Rafael, informational workshops, and…. Daniel Min singing a parody of The Greatest Showman’s “From Now On” song as he sobs, declares himself a “clown,” and gives his heartwarming farewell speech? ...yup, that’s right! From April 9-11th, the first ever virtual DCON 2021: Stargazing in Service took place, in which thousands of Key Clubbers across the Cali-Nev-Ha District came together for a weekend of awards, celebrations, and bonding. If you could not make it, don’t worry; here’s a recap of what went down!

day

one

The first day of DCON was largely laid-back and relaxed. Starting at 6 PM, the first session of DCON commenced, giving Key Clubbers the opportunity to meet and ask questions to the District candidates running for office. Later on, we were able to engage in Region and LTG Sessions featuring fun bonding activities, as well as get our questions answered during the District Leadership Team Q & A.

The second day of DCON was the
longest—but also the most eventful and entertaining day out of all three days. Kicking off the day, General Session 1 introduced the convention, highlighted keynote speakers, and showcased an impressive musical performance by AJ Rafael. Following this, delegates were able to vote and elect the new 2021-2022 District Executive Board, while nondelegates engaged in educational workshop sessions, where they were able to learn about topics ranging from member retention to social media management to career exploration. Finally, during General Session 2 came the long-awaited moment: the awards ceremony. The wait was well-worth it though because Whitney Key Club was proudly recognized with dozens of awards: Diamond Distinguished, Major Emphasis, Single Service, District Tree, and more (the most out of any club in CNH)! Later on, the evening ended with Governor’s Ball, allowing Key Clubbers to directly interact with each other through fun activities including karaoke, Just Dance, service projects, and more.

Key Clubbers attended officer workshops, District Executive Board results were announced, and the 2020-2021 term officially came to a bittersweet close as we bid farewell to the seniors and welcomed in the new board.

Moments like these, seeing thousands of Key Clubbers across the district come together virtually in spite of the pandemic, remind me of why I love Key Club so much. While DCON 2021 may have been painfully long (and even boring at times, given the virtual setting), I hope that those of you who attended found the experience worthwhile. With that being said, see you all at the in-person DCON 2022: A Golden Year of Service from April 1st to 3rd at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada! It will be much more exciting and appealing—I promise. Keep up the good work!

what legacy do you want to leave behind?

The legacy I hope to leave behind is making Key Club THE club to be in. We have so much to offer from countless service opportunities, support towards wonderful charities, chances for bonding and socializing, exciting key club unique events and so much more that I want to make known to EVERYONE. I want people to look at Cypress Key Club and just think “Wow, that’s the place to be.” It’s just an awesome community that does so many wonderful things that the everyday person would not be able to recognize at first, so I want to be the one that shines a spotlight on what we are truly about. Cypress key club means so much to me and I will do everything in my power to give it the love and praise it deserves.

why did you join key club? One of my close friends, Dayton, had always talked about Key Club. He’s 3 years older than me and attended JFK, so he would always tell me about stuff he did during high school and Key Club came up a lot, and I mean, a lot. I didn’t mind though because all his stories about Fall Rally, early morning volunteer events, socials and DCMs seemed so fun to me. I knew the moment I went to high school, the first thing I’d have to do was join Key Club. So when club rush in freshman year came around, I signed up and became a Cypress Key Clubber :P

what are your goals for the 2021-2022 term? My qualitative goals for this term are to have 130 dues paid members, raise 1K for PTP and to serve at least 1250 service hours. Some personal goals I have are to create small group/team system called “bee-hives”, and to hold a new member orientation event for incoming freshman or new-bee Key Clubbers. With all of that though, my main goal for this term is to make sure everyone has a great time. I want everyone to use Key Club as their escape and something to look forward to. I hope to see smiles and hear laughter at every project, event, social, DCM we participate in.

In April, Cypress mainly focused on introducing the new term to our remaining members and the newly appointed board. It was more of a transitional period but we pushed ourselves to put out events and fundraisers nonetheless. We had projects such as Color-A-Smile, Charity Miles and Love for our Elders. We decided to rebrand a bit and opened up a logo design contest which allowed members to submit some original art. We had a pretty successful fundraiser with 7Leaves as well. So far in May, we’ve continued with some digital service NEW CYPRESS KEY CLUB LOGO projects like Unicef Math for Good and Shave the Day but also of course continued to serve in person at our two food banks and prep events. These in-person events in coordination with Love Anaheim and Vineyard Church are a club favorite and it racks in the majority of our hours. All together it brings us to over 200 service hours and we hope to see that number increase as summer approaches. We held a wonderful social with Magnolia on May 8th then treated ourselves to Chipotle that same day for another PTP fundraiser. At the end of May we will be hosting our “New-Bees Member Orientation” which will be an interactive webinar/q&a event for mainly incoming Freshman from Lexington to learn about Key Club.
