Spring has sprung, the daffodils are almost ready to flower in my garden and the days are getting longer. I LOVE this time of year. We have a special section this month inspired by Spring see page 39. Take a look at how our creativity was sparked by the return of birds and insects to our gardens along with the beautiful coloured flowers bursting in to bloom. Does spring inspire you? We are very pleased to have a showcase by the super talented designer ‘Stephanie Dieleman’, her clean and simple yet very detailed designs are just beautiful. I am particularly taken by her ‘Escape to the Sea’ project on page 60. String a 4mm sterling silver round bead, a daisy spacer, a dragonfly focal lampwork bead, a daisy spacer, a silver round, a daisy spacer, a quartz crystal faceted rondelle, a daisy spacer, and a silver round bead and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the bar end of a sterling silver leaf toggle clasp. 3 Cut a length of 22 gauge sterling silver wire and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the ring end of the sterling silver leaf toggle clasp. String a 4mm sterling silver round bead, a daisy spacer, a quartz crystal faceted rondelle, a daisy spacer, and a 4mm sterling silver round bead and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a 1” length of sterling silver textured chain. 4 Cut a length of 22 gauge sterling silver wire and make a wrapped loop, connecting the first loop to the other end of the 1” length of chain. String beads as desired and make a wrapped loop. 5 Repeat step 4, connecting the first loop to the wrapped loop on the previous link. String beads as desired and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a 20” length of sterling silver textured chain. 6 Repeat in this manner, connecting beaded links and a 1” length of chain to the other end of the 20” length of chain. Connect the last wrapped loop to the bar end of the toggle clasp. 7 String a headpin with a faceted pearl and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a link in the 1” length of chain. Repeat as desired, adding pearls to links in the chain and between beaded links as shown.

1 Cut a 2’ length of 24 gauge annealed steel wire and clean it by passing it through a folded piece of sand paper several times. Using a 16 gauge mandrel, coil the wire to form a 1 ½” length coil. Cut the coiled wire into two lengths: 1 ¼” and ¼”. Set aside. 2 Cut a length of steel wire and make a small loop on the end. String a 9mm faceted honey jade round bead and make a simple loop. 3 Cut a length of steel wire and make a wrapped loop. String a 6x9mm Czech fire-polished yellow faceted rondelle and the ¼” coil piece created in step 1 and make a wrapped loop. Cut a length of steel wire and make a small loop on one end. String a 4mm yellow jade cube and make a simple loop, connecting it to the bottom of the rondelle. 4 Cut four links from a 4x7mm curb chain. Cut a length of steel wire and make a small loop on one end. String a 12mm sponge coral rondelle and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the last link in the chain. Cut a length of steel wire and make a small loop on one end. String a 6mm carnelian rondelle and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a link in the chain. Repeat with another 6mm carnelian rondelle and a 4mm yellow jade cube. 5 Cut an 8” length of steel wire and string an 11x14mm yellow jade oval. Make a crisscross design on the front of the jade oval and make a wrapped loop at the top of the jade oval. 6 Cut a 3’ length of 22 gauge steel wire and sand to clean. String a polymer clay focal approximately ¾ of the way to the end of the wire. Begin a wrapped loop perpendicular to the focal, using a pen to create a large loop. Before finishing the loop add the 1 ¼” coil piece created in step 1. Complete the wrapped loop, wrapping at least four times. On the other end of the polymer clay focal create a wrapped loop, connecting it to the dangles created in steps 2-5. 7 Coil the tail wire at the top of the polymer clay focal around a mandrel, stretching the wire by pulling it as it is coiled. Wrap this coil around the base of the coiled bail two times. Create loose coils and stretch them across the front of the focal, wrap the wire tightly around the bottom of the focal and then coil back up the face of the focal. Wrap the wire around the bail to secure and trim excess wire. 8 Coil the wire at the bottom of the focal in a similar fashion, wrapping it around the bottom loop once. Coil and stretch the wire as you pull it across the front of the focal. Wrap the wire around the bail to secure and trim excess wire. 9 Cut two 23” lengths of 4mm antique silver-plated steel chain. Cut a length of 22 gauge steel wire and create a wrapped loop, connecting it to the last link in the two chain lengths. String a 4mm yellow jade cube and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a handmade hook clasp. Cut a length of 22 gauge steel wire and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the other end of the two chains. String a 4mm yellow jade cube and make a large wrapped loop, creating an “eye” for the hook clasp.

Delicate & Delightful by Rupa Balachandar

1 String a headpin with a 4mm Swarovski bicone, a 5mm Lucite tulip bead, and a Czech tourmaline rondelle and make a simple loop. Repeat seven more times. 2 String a headpin with a 4mm silver bead and make a simple loop. Repeat seven more times. 3 Cut a 5â&#x20AC;? length of silver-tone oval link chain. Using a jumpring, connect the hook half of a clasp to one end of the chain. 4 Randomly connect the beaded headpins from steps 1 and 2 in the pattern shown, alternating between floral beads and silver beads. Note: Reserve one floral and one silver bead headpin. 5 Slightly bend a silver floral charm and using a jumpring connect one side of the charm to the end of the silver chain, opposite the hook clasp. Using a jumpring, connect the eye half of the clasp and the remaining floral and silver bead headpins to the opposite side of the charm. 12

In the Pink by Christina Porter

1 Cut three 9â&#x20AC;? lengths of beading wire. 2 String a crimp tube on one wire; make a loop in the wire and thread the wire back through the crimp tube and crimp. 3 String beads in the pattern shown or as desired until the desired length is achieved. Repeat step 2. 4 Repeat steps 2-3 using the same pattern as the first strand. These are the two outside strands of the bracelet. 5 Repeat steps 2-3 stringing the pattern shown or as desired adding a 14x11mm faceted rose quartz nugget at the centre of the strand. 6 Connect the ends of the strand to half of a toggle clasp using 4mm sterling silver jumprings. Repeat to connect the other ends to the other half of the clasp. 15

Rosy Future by Shannon Schmid This example necklace measures 20” with a 4” extender chain. Total length is 24”.

1 Cut five lengths of 20x10mm sterling silver textured oval chain: two 1”, two 1 ½”, and one 3” length. 2 Cut a 4” length of smaller chain to be used as an extender chain. String a headpin with a crazy lace agate nugget and a ruby jade and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the end of the 4” length of chain. Connect the other end of the chain to one of the 1” lengths of 20x10mm sterling silver textured oval chain cut in step 1. 3 Connect the 1” length of chain from step 2 to a fuchsia agate slice using a large jumpring. Continue connecting fuchsia agate slices and the textured oval chain cut in step 1 in the pattern shown or as desired using large jumprings. Use the long 3” length of textured chain at the centre of the design. Note: Make sure to save the prettiest slice of agate for the centre agate dangle. 4 Using a jumpring, connect a lobster claw clasp to the end of the necklace. 5 String a headpin with desired beads and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a link in the textured chain on the necklace. Repeat adding a variety of beads and stick pearls to the necklace as shown. Connect the prettiest slice of fuchsia agate to the longest length of textured chain at the centre of the design using a jumpring. Note: Once the chains, agate slices, and lobster claw clasp are attached, place the necklace on a bust and check for fit and balance. Adjust as needed before adding all of the elements from step 5.

Sand Dancer by Tish McDermott

1 Cut a 3 ½” length of 24 gauge copper wire and make a wrapped loop. String a 3mm faceted red agate bead, a copper bead cap, a 19mm orange resin roundelle, a copper bead cap, and a 3mm faceted red agate bead and make a wrapped loop. Repeat three more times. 2 Cut a 3 ½” length of 24 gauge copper wire and make a wrapped loop. String a 4mm lilac stone, a copper bead cap, a 19mm purple resin roundelle, a copper bead cap, and a 4mm lilac stone and create a wrapped loop. Repeat. 3 Cut a 3 ½” length of 24 gauge copper wire and make a small crimp on one end to create a headpin. String a 3mm faceted red agate bead, a copper bead cap, a 19mm orange resin roundelle, a copper bead cap, and a 3mm faceted red agate bead and make a wrapped loop. 4 Cut a 1 ½” length of 24 gauge copper wire and make a wrapped loop. String an 8mm Czech glass topaz druk bead and make a wrapped loop. Repeat with another druk bead, two 11x11mm rainbow carnelian squares, and two 4x4mm green spider jasper cubes. 5 Cut a 5” length of 20 gauge copper wire and form an elongated figure 8 by wrapping the ends of the wire around the base of your chain nose pliers. String the 19mm orange resin pendant created in step 3, positioning it at the bottom of the oval loop. Bring the wire to the middle of the figure 8 and make a double wrap around the middle. String another green spider jasper cube and continue with another wrap around the middle. String a spider jasper cube and wrap the remaining wire around the middle. Note: This is meant to be a messy wrap. Lightly hammer the ends of the figure 8 to work harden the metal and add texture. 6 Connect the top of the elongated figure 8 to a 10mm copper ring using a 5mm copper jumpring. Connect two more 10mm copper rings to the first using 5mm copper jumprings. 7 Using 10mm copper rings and 5mm copper jumprings, connect the beaded links in the necklace design as shown. Connect a handmade hook clasp to one end of the necklace and a chain of three 10mm copper rings to the other end. 8 String a headpin with a 4mm Czech yellow glass bicone and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the top of the figure 8. 9 Repeat step 8, adding another Czech yellow glass bicone to the other side of the top of the figure 8. 10 Repeat step 8, connecting it to the 10mm copper ring above the figure 8. Repeat three more times connecting them on each side and the top of the 10mm copper ring. 11 Repeat step 10 using 4mm Swarovski green crystal bicones. 18

Rainbow Sherbet by Lisa Suver 1 Cut an 8-10â&#x20AC;? length of 24 gauge sterling silver wire. Wrap one end of the wire onto a 25mm round link of silver chain. String a few 4 & 6mm Swarovski crystal bicones as desired. Cross the wire over to another section of the silver link and wrap the wire again. Repeat until the desired look is achieved. 2 String a headpin with a 6mm Swarovski crystal bicone and make a wrapped loop. Repeat six more times. 3 String an 8mm sterling silver jumpring with the seven beaded headpins from step 2 and connect to the bottom of the silver link. 4 Connect the other end of the link to an ear post using an 8mm sterling silver jumpring.

Medusa Earrings by Karyn Hayden

1 To make an earwire, cut a 3” length of 20 gauge sterling silver wire. Make a simple loop at the end of the wire with round nose pliers. Wrap wire around a mandrel to make the curve of the earwire. Using round nose pliers, make a small bend at the end for placing into the ear. Deburr ends with a file until loop is smooth. Hammer lightly on a metal block with a chasing hammer until slightly flattened. This strengthens the earwire. 2 Cut a 3” length of 24 gauge fine silver wire. 3 Treat the earwire and wire from step 2 with liver of sulfur. 4 Cut three 2” lengths of black brass ladder chain. 5 Make a wrapped loop in the 24 gauge wire from step 2. String an 8x12mm faceted aqua quartz rondelle and make a wrapped loop connecting to all three lengths of black brass ladder chain. Connect to the earwire.

Lime Jubilee by Kristy Abner

NECKLACE 1 Cut a 22â&#x20AC;? length of beading wire. 2 String a crimp bead and half of a hook & eye clasp. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. Cover with a crimp cover. 3 String jade beads, lime rondelles, and chalcedony nuggets in the pattern shown or as desired. 4 String a teardrop pendant at the centre of the necklace. 5 Repeat step 3 in reverse order for the second half of the necklace. 6 Repeat step 2 using the other half of the clasp. EARRINGS 1 Cut a 4â&#x20AC;? length of beading wire. 2 String jade beads and lime rondelles in the pattern shown or as desired. 3 Slide a crimp bead onto both ends of the wire, forming a teardrop shape. Bring one end of the wire back through the crimp bead forming a small loop. Adjust the size of the teardrop as desired and crimp. Trim excess wire. 4 Attach an earwire to the small loop on the teardrop.

Perles à Noué by Amelia Yaussy

1 Knot the end of a length of bead cord with a needle and string a clamshell bead tip. Glue the knot and let dry completely. Close the clamshell bead tip over the glued knot, loop the tab, and knot the cord against the clamshell. 2 String a biwa pearl and tie a knot. String three rice pearls and knot. String a biwa pearl, knot, a biwa pearl, three rice pearls, and knot. Continue this pattern for about 22”, ending with a single biwa pearl and knot. 3 String a clamshell bead tip with the inside facing the needle. Knot, trim, and glue the cord. Let dry completely. Close the clamshell over the glued knot and loop the tab. 4 Repeat step 1. 5 String two button pearls and tie a knot. Repeat. String a crystal bicone and tie a knot. 6 Repeat this pattern for about 20” and then repeat step 5. 7 Repeat step 3. 8 Cut two 2” lengths of artistic wire. Create a wrapped loop connecting the clamshell bead tips from each strand. String a cone to cover the clamshell bead tips and create a wrapped loop. Trim excess wire. Using a 5mm jumpring, connect half of a lobster claw clasp. 9 Repeat step 8 with the second 2” wire.

Random Elegance by Tish McDermott

1 Using 12 gauge sterling silver soft wire, wrap once around a dowel rod to make a ring. This will use about 2” of wire. Cut the wire with a side nipper so the edges are flush. Lightly hammer the ring on an anvil so it will harden, give it a bit of texture, and maintain its shape. 2 Using 24 gauge sterling silver half hard wire, wrap the “seam” of the ring made in step 1 to give it more texture. This will use about 2 ½” of wire. 3 Using 18 gauge sterling silver soft wire, wrap around the base of the chain nose pliers to make an 8mm jumpring. Cut the wire with a side nipper so the edges are flush. Repeat for a second 8mm jumpring. 4 Cut an 18”, a 19”, and a 20” strand of beading wire. 5 String a crimp bead and a 5mm jumpring. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. 6 String seven seed beads, five moonstone heishi beads, and five amethyst rectangles alternating with seed beads. 7 String ¾ of the beading wire with purple jasper ovals, lampwork beads, pearls, vintage glass rounds, Bali barrels, moonstone heishi beads, and seed beads in a random design. 8 Trim the wire approximately ½” above the last bead added. Set the trimmed wire aside. String a crimp bead and an 8mm jumpring from step 3. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. Connect the 12 gauge ring from step 1 to the 8mm jumpring. Connect the second 8mm jumpring from step 3 to the 12 gauge ring. 9 Using the remaining trimmed wire from step 8, repeat step 5, connecting it to the second 8mm jumpring added in step 8. 10 String about 3-4” more of a random design. Repeat step 6 in reverse order as shown. 11 Repeat step 5 using a 5mm jumpring. 12 Using the other two lengths of beading wire, repeat steps 5 and 6 connecting to the same 5mm jumpring in step 5. String each strand of beading wire with purple jasper ovals, lampwork beads, pearls, vintage glass rounds, Bali barrels, moonstone heishi beads, and seed beads in a random design. Repeat step 6 in reverse order. 13 Repeat step 5 for each, connecting both strands to the 5mm jumpring in step 11. 14 Connect a hook & eye clasp to the 5mm jumprings on each end of the necklace. 28

Wild Horses by Kerri Fuhr

1 String a silver spacer, a Friesian horse focal bead, a silver spacer, a rhinestone bead, and a silver spacer onto a changeable bead pendant. Secure the end of the pendant by using pliers to tighten the screw cap. Add a small amount of jewelerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s epoxy on the threads if you want the pendant to be permanent. 2 Cut a 20â&#x20AC;? length of beading wire. 3 String two silver rounds, a crimp bead, and 4mm jumpring. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. Use a silver seamed round as a crimp cover. 4 String eight faceted agate nuggets and two faceted black onyx rounds separated by daisy spacers and silver rounds in the pattern shown or as desired. 5 String five silver rounds at the centre of the necklace. String the bail of the pendant from step 1 over the silver rounds. 6 Repeat step 4 in reverse order for the second half of the necklace. 7 Repeat step 3. 8 Create an extender chain by connecting three 8mm textured jumprings together with two 4mm jumprings. Connect to the jumpring at the end of the necklace. Connect a lobster claw clasp to the other end. 31

Punaluâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;u Black Sand by Leslie Zabel 1 Oxidize two Hill Tribe hammered tubes in liver of sulfur. 2 Cut a 9â&#x20AC;? length of beading wire. 3 String a 4mm Swarovski crystal bicone, a crimp tube, and a 5mm jumpring. Thread the wire back through the crimp tube and crimp. 4 String a Bali spacer, a 4mm Swarovski crystal bicone, a Hill Tribe hammered tube, a 6mm Swarovski crystal bicone, and another Bali Spacer. 5 String an Itasy jasper flat oval stone. 6 Repeat step 4 in reverse order for the other side of the bracelet. 7 Repeat step 3 adding a lobster claw clasp. Trim excess wire and cover crimp tubes with crimp covers. 8 Connect the jumpring on a lunar charm to the 5mm jumpring from step 3.

1 Cut a desired length of round link chain. Connect half of a toggle clasp to each end of the chain. 2 Make nine lampwork dangles. String a ball end headpin with a pink seed bead, a metal spacer, a pink seed bead, a lampwork bead, a pink seed bead, a metal spacer, and a pink seed bead and create a wrapped loop. 3 Make eight rose quartz dangles. Cut a desired length of artistic wire and string a rose quartz rectangle. Bring the wires together above the bead and string a metal spacer and a 2mm rose quartz round onto both wires and make a wrapped loop. 4 Make 30 to 40 teardrop seed bead dangles. String a ball end headpin with five to nine teardrop seed beads. Vary the number of seed beads over the number of dangles to create a staggered, more natural â&#x20AC;&#x153;showeringâ&#x20AC;? look to the overall bracelet design. 5 To assemble the bracelet, begin by laying out the lampwork and rose quartz dangles to be evenly distributed across the length of the bracelet links. Fill in the links between with two to three dangles per link. Once you are pleased with the distribution, open each link of the bracelet with pliers and add the dangles. Ensure that each link is closed securely as you work across the bracelet.

1 String a headpin with a 4mm beige druk bead, an 11mm yellow Lucite bead, and a 4mm beige druk bead. Make a wrapped loop. Set aside. Repeat two more times. 2 String a headpin with a 4mm beige druk bead and an orange flower cap and make a wrapped loop. Set aside. Repeat. 3 String a headpin with a yellow filigree bead and make a wrapped loop. Repeat. String a headpin with a vintage cream flower bead and make a wrapped loop. Repeat. Set aside. 4 Attach a 4mm jumpring to each antique brass dove. Close and set aside. 5 Cut a 7â&#x20AC;? length of antique brass chain and attach a lobster claw clasp to one end. 6 Lay the chain on a work surface. Lay out the beaded headpins and charms evenly distributed along the chain as shown or as desired. 7 Using 7mm jumprings, connect the handmade bird charms, brass dove charms, and brass ovals. 8 Using 4mm jumprings, connect the orange flower charms, yellow filigree beads, 11mm yellow beads, cream flowers, raw brass bird charms, and a large antique brass soaring bird charm.

1 String a headpin with a bell flower bead and create a wrapped loop. Wrap the wire three to four times securely underneath the loop. Repeat eight times using bell and trumpet flower beads. 2 Open a 6mm jumpring and string bell and trumpet flower beaded headpins, alternating sizes and colours as shown. There should be a total of nine flowers. 3 Close the jumpring and connect to an antique brass kidney earwire. 4 Use chain nose pliers to close the loop of the earwire to prevent the jumpring from slipping off.

NECKLACE 1 Cut two 5 ½” lengths of textured cable chain. 2 Cut a 7” length of beading wire. String a crimp tube and the end link of a textured cable chain. Thread the wire back through the crimp tube and crimp. 3 String a 4mm bicone, a 4mm bright silver daisy spacer, a pearl, a daisy spacer, a 4mm bicone, and a lampwork bead. 4 Continue this pattern using all lampwork beads and pearls and ending with a 4mm bicone. 5 String a crimp tube and the end link of the second textured cable chain. Thread the wire back through the crimp tube and the last few beads in the design and crimp. Trim excess wire. 6 Using a 6mm jumpring, connect a 3x4mm extender cable chain to the other end of the textured cable chain. 7 Using a 4mm jumpring, connect a lobster claw clasp to the end of the other textured cable chain. 8 String a 1 ½” ball end headpin with a daisy spacer, a 4mm bicone, and a daisy spacer. Create a wrapped loop connecting it to the end of the extender chain.

EARRINGS 1 Cut a 2 ½” length of 20 gauge wire to make an earwire. Make a simple loop at the end of the wire. String a 4mm bicone and bend the wire to a 45 degree angle. Wrap the wire around a mandrel making the bend in the earwire. Use round nose pliers to make a slight bend in the wire for the end. Trim excess wire. 2 String a 2” ball end headpin with a 4mm daisy spacer, a 5mm daisy spacer, a lampwork bead, a 10mm bead cap, and a 4mm daisy spacer. Stephanie Dieleman

Stephanie Dieleman is a glass bead artist who works from her home studio in Langley, British Columbia, where she lives with her husband and four teenage daughters. Stephanie has always had a creative spirit and from the time she was old enough to hold a paint brush, she was creating works of art. She worked as an illustrator and costume designer after graduating with a commercial art degree and now teaches fine art to children in her home studio several days a week. Stephanie started making beads in 2005 and was hooked from the time she made her first bead. A year after starting her beadmaking career, she launched her successful jewellery line called the “Pacific Shores Collection” which features oceanthemed lampwork beads, semi-

precious stones, pearls, and her own handcrafted silver clay components. The beauty of the West Coast inspires Stephanie’s work; many of her glass beads have multiple layers of transparent colours and look like miniature tide-pools complete with aquatic treasures hidden inside. Stephanie’s starfish beads are her most recognizable signature pieces. Cover the crimp tube with a crimp cover. 3 String beads in the pattern shown or as desired until the required length is achieved. 4 Repeat step 2 and trim excess wire. 5 Thread a 32â&#x20AC;? length of hand-dyed white silk ribbon with metallic silver edges through one of the crystal loops at the end of the beaded strand, positioning the crystal loop in the centre of the silk. Holding the silk together, tie a knot just above the crystal loop to secure. Thread the ends of the ribbon through the crystal loop on the other end of the beaded strand and tie a knot to secure. EARRINGS 1 String a headpin with a 3mm sterling silver round bead, a 6mm Swarovski crystal bicone, a 3mm sterling silver round bead, an 8mm Swarovski crystal round, a 3mm sterling silver round bead, a 6mm Swarovski crystal bicone, and a 3mm sterling silver round bead. 2 Make a wrapped loop and connect to a French hook earwire.

Nights in White Satin by Betty Hood

This pendant looks beautiful on a very thick sterling silver necklace! 1 Cut five 12” 22 gauge sterling silver dead soft square wires. Straighten the wires by using a polishing cloth. 2 Cut a 6” length of 22 gauge sterling silver half hard half round wire. Using this wire hold the five wires from step 1 together, making sure they are flat against each other. Make a wrap around these wires five times in the middle of the wires. Use flat nose pliers to crimp the wires down tightly. Place another four or five wire wraps approximately ½” from the first on each side. Secure a rutilated quartz crystal stone with the wrapped wires and using needle nose pliers, pull the outside wire at the back and the one in the front to hold the stone in place. Secure the ten wires at the top of the stone by wrapping them with the half hard half round wire. Create a bail using the three back wires. 3 There are seven wires remaining at the top of the pendant. Take two wires on the side and using 22 gauge sterling silver half hard half round wire, cut a wire about 15” long and wrap the two wires almost to the end. Twist the wire as desired and connect to the bottom of the stone. 4 Take three wires on the other side and using a drill attachment or curved needle nose pliers, twist the wire to the desired tightness. Shape two of the wires curving down and then attach at the bottom of the stone. String one of the Swarovski crystals on the end of one of the wires and then curl each wire. Take the third wire and curl it around the needle nose pliers (free form) at the top of the pendant. 5 Using the remaining two wires at the top of the pendant, string seven Swarovski crystals on one wire and five Swarovski crystals on the other wire (alternating between 6mm and 4mm crystals). Shape one wire to the right, wrapping the end of that wire to the wire that was wrapped with the half hard half round wire. Pull the second wire down in the front, curving to the left, and take the extra wire and wrap it around the bail wires. Finish with a rosette in the back of the pendant. Note: Always clean the finished piece using a gentle sterling silver cleaner or a sterling silver polishing cloth. Since this is a rutilated quartz faceted crystal it may be submerged in a gentle liquid cleaner.

1 Begin by drawing a template on paper of the desired shape for your earrings. Example shown is a large ½” diameter curve on top with a large ¼” eye loop on one side and a small 1/16” loop on the opposite side. 2 Cut an 8” length of 20 gauge sterling silver dead soft wire and lay the wire over the drawn template. Hand shape the form of the earring. Hammer the wire to work harden and add texture. 3 Cut an 8” length of 26 gauge dead soft wire and string an 8x10mm crystal quartz faceted briolette. Create a loosely or “messy” wrapped loop above the briolette to achieve a slightly chunky look. Repeat with a 5x7mm crystal quartz faceted briolette. 4 Using chain nose and flat nose pliers, open the loops on the earring form and connect the crystal quartz briolettes from step 3 as shown. 5 Connect to a sterling silver earwire. 6 Patina with liver of sulfur.

In the March 2010 issue of Bead Trends we introduced you to Lori Mendenhall, a wonderful designer and polymer clay artist. Her Introduction to Resin article presented the basics of working with resin, a popular product used in jewellery making. Building on the information shared in that article, we are pleased to feature a tutorial on how to create a unique polymer clay and resin pendant. Once you become comfortable working with polymer clay and resin, the design possibilities are limitless! By Lori Mendenhall

INSTR U CTIONS

Using chain nose pliers, bend down one of the loops on a 35mm lacy edged silver bezel. Bend down another loop on the opposite side of the first bent loop. These loops will be used to connect a jumpring and hang a decorative dangle. Set aside. Condition black polymer clay by running it through a pasta machine approximately 20 times. The clay should be pliable and not crack when you fold it. Keep running it through the pasta machine until it is soft and fully conditioned. If a dedicated pasta machine is not available the clay may be rolled with a roller, however, it will take a great deal of work to be sufficiently conditioned.

Roll out a medium thick sheet of polymer clay. Depending on how deep your bezel is, you may need to adjust the thickness of the clay sheet. Place the bezel upside down on the clay. Press hard enough that the clay embeds itself into the bezel and the shape is cut out (similar to using a cookie cutter). Use a needle tool and clean out the clay from the holes where you previously bent the loops. Use your fingers to smooth out the clay. Note: A little rubbing alcohol on your finger often helps smooth the clay. It does not need to be perfect, as a texture will be applied in the next step.

To embellish the clay, use a texture tool such as a rubber stamp or texture sheet to give the clay some texture. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry if the design doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t show up too well because the next step will really make it pop! Carefully dip your finger into mica or metal powder. Tap off any excess and gently rub your finger over the top of the textured clay. The goal is to apply powder only on the raised area of clay, leaving the recessed areas black. Press a charm into the clay. It does not matter if the charm does not go into the clay very deeply because it will be locked into place with resin.

When you are happy with the design, bake the pendant in a 275 degree oven for 30 minutes. Let the piece cool completely. Prepare to work with resin. Resin will secure the charm permanently, seal the mica or metal powder, and give the pendant an amazing glass-like shine. Resin will need to be mixed, applied, and then cured for 3 days. Gather all the supplies needed in advance; once the resin is mixed you will only have about a half an hour before it is too thick to use. Put on safety glasses and gloves, open a window, and lay down some wax paper. Resin sticks to nearly everything except wax paper; it is extremely messy so be as careful as possible. Use a baby wipe to clean up any spills. Measure out exact amounts of resin and hardener and combine them in a disposable plastic cup. Note: Do not use a wax-lined paper cup. It is recommended that you mix no less than ½ ounce of each to ensure a perfect ratio. With an ounce of resin you will be able to coat many pendants. I usually work in batches of 30 pendants and mix two ounces at a

time. Mix the resin and hardener for one minute. My stirring tool of choice is a plastic knife; but use anything you have which is suitable and disposable. After one minute, pour the mixture into a clean cup and use a fresh stirring tool and mix for another minute. Note: Don’t be concerned about the bubbles right now. Working on the wax paper, use a disposable brush to apply the resin onto the top of the pendant. Make sure to cover the charm, touching the entire edge of the pendant. Don’t put too much on or it will drip over the sides. This can take a bit of practice. Once the resin is applied, run an embossing gun over the piece to remove any air bubbles. There can be tiny bubbles you don’t see initially, but once you run the gun over the piece you can see them pop. If you don’t have an embossing gun you can blow through a straw gently to pop the bubbles.

Check for drips every few minutes and when it looks perfect, set the bezel aside and allow it to cure for three days. You may carefully move the pendant after 12 hours, but you should not jar it any further for three days. Once the pendant is completely cured, check the tiny loops at the top and bottom that were bent down with pliers in step 1. If the holes are not clear, use a drill to clean them out. Resin is very easy to drill. Attach a jumpring or wire-wrapped bail to the top bent loop so you may hang the pendant. Embellish the pendant by adding a dangle to the bottom loop. String desired beads on a headpin and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the bottom bent loop. To see more of Lori’s work visit her website at lorimendenhall.com

For a finishing touch, add a Swarovski flatback crystal on top of the resin. Resin destroys the sparkle of a crystal, so it must be added after the resin. The resin acts as glue and the crystal will be very secure once it is dried.

A View from the Garden by Susan Kennedy BRACELET 1 String an eyepin with a matte teal Japanese seed bead, a lampwork bead, and a seed bead. Make a simple loop. Repeat two more times. 2 Connect the three lampwork beaded eyepins using 7mm jumprings. Connect an end of the lampwork strand to the loop on the side of a polymer clay focal connector. 3 Cut a 10â&#x20AC;? length of beading wire and string the loop on the other side of the polymer clay focal connector, positioning it in the centre of the wire. String a crimp bead over both wires and crimp. 4 Keeping the wires together string two Greek ceramic cog beads. 5 Separate the wires and string each wire with 11/0 Rain Forest Mix matte AB Czech seed beads until the desired length is achieved. 6 Twist the seed bead wires once and string two Greek ceramic cog beads over both wires. String a crimp bead and a 4.75mm jumpring. Thread the wires back through the crimp bead and crimp. Trim excess wires. 7 Connect a hook & eye clasp to the ends of the bracelet. EARRINGS 1 String a headpin with a bead cap and a lampwork bead and make a simple loop. Connect to an eyepin. 2 String the eyepin with three different coloured Greek ceramic cog beads and make a simple loop. Connect to an earwire.

Fresh Squeezed by Sharon Borsavage

1 Cut a 5â&#x20AC;? length of 18 gauge wire and make a wrapped loop. String an 8/0 sparkling light rose/copper Miyuki triangle, a Bali star spacer, a mango lampwork bead, and a rose/copper Miyuki triangle and make a wrapped loop. 2 Cut a 5â&#x20AC;? length of 18 gauge wire and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the last wrapped loop on the link created in step 1. String a rose shell bead, a Bali star spacer, and an 8/0 sparkling yellow Miyuki triangle and make a wrapped loop. 3 Repeat step 1, connecting the first wrapped loop to the last wrapped loop from step 2. 4 Repeat step 2, connecting the first wrapped loop to the last wrapped loop from step 3. 5 Connect half of a handmade hook & eye clasp to each end of the bracelet using 6mm sterling silver jumprings. It’s a Wrap by Shannon Schmid

This design by Shannon Schmid was created following the inspiration and lesson available from Eni Oken. Complete instructions for this coiled bangle design and other beautiful beadwork are available on Eni’s website at Jewelrylessons.com. 1 Cut a 1” length of sterling silver textured round chain. Cut a 12” length of 18 gauge sterling silver wire and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the end of the 1” length of chain. 2 String beads in the pattern shown, from smaller to larger and then back to smaller. String enough beads that the design is approximately 1” smaller than the required wrist measurement. Tie a knot on the other end of the wire. 3 Attach 5’ of 26 gauge wire to the end of the bracelet with the chain. Wrap the wire down around the first two beads and wrap twice around the wire core. Bring the wire back up the other side of the bracelet and wrap. Keep wrapping in this “crazy-eight/ half herringbone” pattern until you reach the other end of the bracelet. Each bead will have a frame of two wires around each of them on both sides. 4 Cut 2’ of 28 gauge dead soft wire and start coiling the 26 gauge wire with the 28 gauge wire, keeping the coils as close together as possible. Note: The best part of this project is that it is portable. Once it reaches this stage you can put it in a Ziploc bag and take it with you! 5 Add beads along the edge once you reach the halfway point as shown. Continue wrapping. Add onyx beads when you reach the centre as shown. Continue wrapping the edge and centre beads until you reach the other end of the bracelet. 6 Turn the bracelet and work the other side identically to the first, adding edge beads and centre beads directly across from their partners on the other side. Trim the short starting wires or wire ends that are added along the way. 7 Curve the bangle into a bracelet shape and connect a lobster claw clasp using a jumpring.

1 Cut a 24â&#x20AC;? length of beading wire. 2 String a crimp bead and half of a Swarovski violet toggle clasp. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. Cover the crimp bead with a crimp cover. 3 String a 3x4mm antique silver beaded cone, a 6mm antiqued silver beaded rondelle, 10 8mm amethyst beads, a 10mm Swarovski amethyst crystal rondelle, a 6mm antiqued silver beaded rondelle, a 10mm antique silver swirl bead cap, an 18mm purple shell laminate bicone bead, a 10mm bead cap, a 6mm antiqued silver beaded rondelle, and a 10mm Swarovski amethyst crystal rondelle. 4 String 17 top-drilled amethyst chevrons in the size and pattern desired. 5 Repeat the beaded pattern from step 3 in reverse order. 6 Repeat step 2 using the other half of the clasp.

1 Cut a 7 ½” length of sterling silver textured chain. 2 String a headpin with a faceted pearl and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a link in the chain. Repeat 12 more times, adding pearls to the chain as shown. Note: Leave a section of chain at one end free of the beaded headpins to be used as an extender chain. Add one beaded headpin to the end of the extender chain. 3 Cut a 9” length of beading wire and string a crimp bead and the jumpring connected to a lobster claw clasp. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. Use a 4mm sterling silver seamed round bead as a crimp cover. Connect the beaded end of the chain to the jumpring connected to the lobster claw clasp. String beads in the order shown or as desired until the desired length is achieved. 4 String a crimp bead and the link in the chain that is equal to the length of the beaded link. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and the last few beads in the design and crimp. Trim excess wire. Use a 4mm sterling silver seamed round bead as a crimp cover.

Little Black Necklace by Carrie Yashin 1 Cut a length of beading wire. 2 String a 13x8mm black onyx faceted oval and position it in the centre of the wire. String a bead cap and a 4mm sterling silver bead on each side of the faceted oval. 3 String each side of the necklace with an even number of 8x4mm black onyx faceted rondelles until the desired length is achieved. 4 String each side of the necklace with a 5mm and a 4mm sterling silver round bead. 5 String a crimp bead and a lobster claw clasp. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. Trim excess wire. Repeat on the other side of the necklace using a 7mm 18 gauge closed jumpring.

Copper Gardens by Marie-Noel Voyer-Cramp 1 To make the handmade earwires, cut two matching lengths of 20 gauge brass wire. Using something solid and rounded (like a highlighter pen), bend both wires in the middle at the same time to create identical shapes. Make a simple loop on one end and curve the other end as shown. File smooth. Hammer as desired to work harden and add texture. Reshape as needed. 2 To make two “S” links, cut two matching short lengths of 18 gauge brass wire. Use round nose pliers and curl the end out and back toward the centre. Curl the other end in the opposite direction, forming an “S” or figure 8. Hammer the links to work harden and add texture. Reshape as needed. 3 String a headpin with a gold seed bead, a Czech Apollo Gold glass flower bead, and a 3mm copper bead and make a wrapped loop. 4 String an eyepin with a Czech Apollo Gold glass flower bead and a gold accent bead and make a wrapped loop. 1 Connect a 6mm brass jumpring, an 8mm copper jumpring, and a 12mm brass blackened patina jumpring to the loop on a copper earwire. 2 Using a chasing hammer and a steel bench block, hammer an 18mm copper washer to add texture. Connect the washer to the 12mm jumpring added in step 1 using three 6mm brass jumprings. 3 Connect the bottom of the washer to a 22x14mm gold aluminum scale using three 6mm black jumprings. 4 Open an 8mm black jumpring and insert it through the three previous black jumprings so it lies flat against the scale. Close the ring. 5 Open a 12mm bronze jumpring and string three 4mm bronze closed jumprings, a 4mm black closed jumpring, a copper round bead, a 4mm black closed jumpring, and three 4mm bronze closed jumprings. Before closing the jumpring insert it through the three black jumprings in step 3 and then close the ring.

Blue Bird by Kristy Abner

1 Cut a 4â&#x20AC;? length of 24 gauge vintage bronze non-tarnish wire and string a lavender teardrop bead. Bend the wires above the bead and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the loop on a bird connector. Wrap the remaining wire down and around the top of the lavender teardrop bead. Using round nose pliers create a decorative loop at the end of the wire and press securely against the teardrop bead. 2 Connect the other end of the bird connector to an antique gold earwire.

Sterling Spring Swirl by Melody Fletcher

1 Cut a 6â&#x20AC;? length of 14 or 16 gauge sterling silver dead soft wire and use round nose pliers and make a curl in the wire. Use flat nose pliers and continue curling the wire, forming a swirl until approximately half of the length of the wire is curled. 2 Use a pair of bail making pliers and beginning on the opposite end (straight end) of the wire, form the wire into a garage spring. The wire will form around the bail pliers approximately three times. Use flat nose pliers and turn the spring into an upright position above the swirl. 3 Pull the first link of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;springâ&#x20AC;? straight up to form a loop to connect to an earwire. 4 Hammer or place in a tumbler to work harden.

Clairvoyant by Tamra Kriedeman “Rock (quartz) crystal is regarded in shamanistic practice as a “light stone”, an instrument of clairvoyance between the visible and invisible. It is also considered a healing stone. These earrings feature a grouping of three petite rock (quartz) crystal nuggets hanging from hand-forged hoops wrapped in sterling silver and washed with patina.” – Tamra 1 Flush cut a 3” length of 20 gauge sterling silver dead soft wire and sand the ends to remove any burs. Use round nose pliers and make a loop on each end of the wire. Loops should face each other. Note: If the wire has a curve, which is a natural occurrence, make the loops against the curve. 2 Place the wire around the middle mandrel of Large Wrap N Tap Pliers and bring ends together to create a hoop. Loop ends should meet each other. 3 Holding both loops together, use the round end of a planishing hammer and hammer the large end and about half way up the sides of the hoop to work harden and add texture to the hoop. 4 Cut two 24” lengths of 26 gauge sterling silver dead soft wire. Insert the end of round nose pliers into both loops to steady the hoop and wrap the wire around the hoop. 5 Starting with the point where the hoop crosses itself, wrap twice to secure and use the remaining tail to wrap around twice on one side of the hoop. Trim closely and use chain nose pliers to gently squeeze the end of the trimmed wire to the hoop. Keeping the wire snug, continue to wrap around the hoop, lining up each wire right underneath the previous wrap. Approximately half of the hoop will be wrapped with wire. 6 When approximately 1” of wire remains, wrap it around one side of the hoop and trim to about ½”. Using round nose pliers, twist gently to make a coil and tuck it up into the open space between the two sides of the wraps. 7 Treat with a liver of sulfur solution and polish as desired. 8 String a headpin with a rock quartz nugget and make a simple loop. Connect it to the bottom of the earring hoop. Repeat two more times. 9 Connect to an earwire and add an earnut.

1 Measure and cut two pieces of large brass chain and three pieces of medium brass chain as desired. All five pieces should be of equal length. Connect the ends of each of the chains together using open brass jumprings. 2 String a headpin with a bead cap and desired bead and make a simple loop. Repeat with additional beads including pearls, filigree beads, acrylic faceted beads, and acrylic swirl beads. Connect beaded headpins to the necklace chains in desired pattern. Note: It is helpful to create this piece on a body form or necklace display to get a more exact placement of beads. 3 Cut a 3â&#x20AC;? length of medium brass chain and connect it to the jumpring on one end of the necklace. Use the remaining wire and make another wrapped loop, wrapping the wire down over the top of the wire from the first wrapped loop. 2 Cut a 2” length of 24 gauge sterling silver wire and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a ½” sterling silver circle charm. Use the remaining wire and make another wrapped loop, connecting it to the loop holding the ceramic pendant. Set aside. 3 Cut a 20” length of beading wire. 4 String a crimp tube and half of a hook & eye clasp. Thread the wire back through the crimp tube and crimp. 5 String beads in the order shown or as desired, adding the ceramic pendant at the centre of the design. String the second half of the necklace mirroring the pattern from the first. 6 Repeat step 4 using the other half of the clasp. Trim excess wire. 7 Connect a 2” extender chain to the eye end of the hook & eye clasp using a 6mm jumpring. String a headpin with a seed bead, a rainforest jasper, and a seed bead and make a wrapped loop. Connect the headpin to the end of the extender chain using another 6mm jumpring.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The centrepiece of this necklace is a vintage brass leaf from Kenya that is hand formed and hand stamped. To compliment the scale of the leaf I used 10 gauge brass wire to form a bail and connection components, hammered and polished.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Maureen 1 Cut a length of 20 gauge brass wire and make a wrapped loop. String a vintage brass bead cap, a 12mm fire agate rondelle, and a vintage brass bead cap and make a wrapped loop. Repeat five more times. 2 Cut a length of 20 gauge brass wire and make a wrapped loop. String an 8mm fire agate round and make a wrapped loop. Repeat three more times. 3 Connect a vintage hand formed and hand stamped brass focal leaf to a 10 gauge handcrafted brass bail. 4 Using a jewelers saw cut one side of 12 brass washers. 5 Using 16 gauge brass jumprings, brass washers, and 10 gauge brass connection components, connect the fire agate links as shown. Add a 10 gauge handcrafted clasp to the end of the necklace using a 16 gauge brass jumpring.

1 Cut 1 ½” length of 24 gauge vintage bronze wire and form a small simple loop. String one pearl and make a wrapped loop. 2 Cut a three link length of 4mm brass cable chain. String a headpin with a gold seed bead, a 4mm black bicone, a copper oval, and a black seed bead and form a simple loop, connecting it to the bottom link in the chain. Using an 8mm copper jumpring, connect the top link of the chain and the pearl dangle created in step 1 to a wooden ring. 3 Cut 4” length of 24 gauge vintage bronze wire and string a green glass briolette. Create a wrapped loop bail, wrapping the remaining wire down around the top of the briolette. Repeat with an olive jade briolette. Cut a 1 ¾” of 4mm brass cable chain. Open the last link like a jumpring and attach the green glass briolette. Open the 5th link of chain from the bottom and attach the olive jade briolette. Connect the top link of the chain to the wooden ring using an 8mm jumpring. 4 Cut 2 ½” length of 24 gauge vintage bronze wire and form a simple loop. String a smoky quartz rondelle, a silver tube, and a smoky quartz rondelle and make a wrapped loop. Cut 6” length of 24 gauge vintage bronze wire and wrap around the top of the silver tube, starting under the smoky quartz rondelle and extending down approximately ¼”. 5 Cut a 3” length of 18 gauge vintage bronze wire and form a loose spiral (10mm in diameter). Form a simple loop at the end going the opposite direction of the spiral, and attach it to the bottom of the silver tube dangle. Connect it to the wooden ring using an 8mm jumpring. 6 Cut 3” of 24 gauge wire and string an amber glass drop. Create a wrapped loop bail. Cut three links of 4mm brass cable chain and attach the amber glass dangle to the bottom link. Connect it to the wooden ring using an 8mm jumpring. String a headpin with a pyrene shell, a copper daisy spacer, and a bronze seed bead and make a simple loop, connecting it to the 8mm jumpring with the amber glass dangle. Set pendant aside. 7 Cut a 17” length of suede lace. Attach a fold-over crimp end to both ends. Connect an 8mm jumpring to each crimp end and attach each jumpring to one half of a copper S hook clasp. 8 Cut a 17” length of 3mm brass cable chain and attach each end to the jumprings at the ends of the suede lace. String the pendant onto both the suede lace and the cable chain. 9 Cut a 17” length of copper ladder chain and attach a 4mm copper jumpring to each end. Attach the 4mm jumprings to the 8mm jumprings at the ends of the suede lace. (Do not string the ladder chain through the pendant.) 10 Attach a 4mm copper jumpring to one of the 8mm jumprings at the end of the suede lace. Cut an 18” length of beading wire and string a crimp tube ½” from the edge. String the wire through the 4mm jumpring and back through the crimp tube and crimp. 11 String an olivine bicone and a 3mm copper round. String 16” of olive seed beads, inserting a copper round approximately every 1 ½”. String a copper round, an olivine bicone, a crimp tube, and a 4mm jumpring. Thread the wire back through the crimp tube and the last few beads in the design and crimp. Trim excess wire. Attach the 4mm jumpring to the 8mm jumpring at the other end of the suede lace. 113

This bracelet is worked in two segments using a flat spiral stitch. 1 Start with a piece of Fireline approximately 9’ in length and thread a size 12 beading needle. 2 String two 6mm Swarovski bicone crystals and move them to the end of the strand leaving approximately a 10” tail. 3 String five seed beads, a 4mm Swarovski bicone, and five more seed beads. Pass through the two 6mm bicones added in step 2, creating a loop. 4 String five seed beads, a 4mm Swarovski bicone, and five more seed beads. Pass through the two 6mm bicones a second time. You now have two loops. Separate the loops by pushing one loop to either side of the 6mm bicones so that the loops flank the 6mm bicones. 5 String a 6mm bicone and pass through the second 6mm bicone strung in step 2, and through the bicone just strung, so you are passing through two 6mm bicones. 6 String five seed beads, a 4mm bicone, and five more seed beads. Pass through the last two 6mm bicones strung, creating a loop which overlaps with the loop created in step 3. 7 String five seed beads, a 4mm bicone, and five more seed beads. Pass through the last two 6mm bicones strung, creating a second loop which overlaps with the loop created in step 4. 8 Continue in this pattern until the bracelet is within 1” of the desired length. 9 Trim the Fireline leaving approximately a 10” tail. Add a bead stopper to help keep the beads in place while you work the second segment. Note: It is also helpful to tape the beginning tail of the first segment to your work surface to minimize tangles. 10 For the second segment, start with a 9’ length of Fireline and thread the beading needle. 11 String two 6mm bicones and move the beads to the end of the strand leaving approximately a 10” tail. 12 String five seed beads, a 4mm bicone, and five more seed beads. Pass through the two 6mm bicones just strung, creating the outermost loop of the bracelet.

13 String five seed beads, pass through the first 4mm bicone on the side of the first segment strung in step 5, and string five more seed beads. Pass through the two 6mm bicones strung in step 11. This creates an interior loop of the flat spiral weave and connects the first segment with the second segment. 14 String a 6mm bicone, pass through the second 6mm bicone of those strung in step 11, and the bicone just strung. 15 String five seed beads, a 4mm bicone, and five more seed beads. Pass through the last two 6mm bicones strung, creating the next outside loop and overlapping the first loop created in step 12. 16 String five seed beads, pass through the second 4mm bicone on segment one (created in step 6), and string five more seed beads. Pass through the last two 6mm bicones strung, creating the next interior loop, overlapping the previous interior loop, and continuing to attach the current work to segment one. 17 Repeat steps 14 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 16 until segment two is the same length as segment one. Do not trim excess thread; it will be used to attach the clasp in the next step. 18 String seven seed beads, one loop of one end of a 2- strand toggle clasp, and five more seed beads. 19 Pass back through the first two seed beads strung in step 18 and down through the last two 6mm bicones. This creates a loop to attach the clasp. 20 Pass up through your work at least two times to strengthen the clasp attachment. 21 Tie a few half-hitch knots between beads and finish off.Â 22 Repeat steps 18 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 21 to attach the bracelet to each half of the clasp using the tail threads.

Fringed Fantasy Belt by Dina Lamison

1 Using a drill or dremel, drill a hole on the opposite side of a horn pendant (making a hole on each side of the pendant). Repeat with all seven horn pendants. 2 Cut a 24â&#x20AC;? length of brown deerskin leather cord. Fold in half creating a loop. Thread the two ends through a hole in the horn pendant and then through the loop in the leather cord. Knot two times. String each end with a tea dyed bone barrel bead. Repeat with another horn pendant. 3 Connect the two horn pendants together by knotting together the top two leather ends and then the bottom two. Thread all of the leather ends through a 2-hole sterling silver connector and then tie two knots. 4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all of the horn pendants are connected. 5 Cut 16 or 18 gauge brass wire into five different sizes (two very large, two large, two medium, four small). Form each of the cut lengths of wire into figure 8 links. Hammer the links to work harden and add texture. Use brass jumprings to connect the links in descending order, creating two sides of a buckle as shown. 6 Using a brass split ring, connect a lobster claw clasp to one side of the buckle. 7 Cut a length of 20 gauge gold-filled wire and make a large wrapped loop, connecting it to the available hole in the horn pendant at the end of the belt. String a wood accent bead and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to one side of the buckle. 8 Repeat step 7 to connect the horn pendant to the other side of the buckle.

1 Take the pattern off of a night light frame. 2 Use the pattern to cut apricot fabric and attach to the frame. Note: The frame already has adhesive on it. 3 Cut 4â&#x20AC;? brown wire ribbon to cover the frame. Make sure the cutouts line up well on the frame and glue to the frame using fabric glue. 4 Measure and cut four styles of fancy beaded trims and layer them on the top and bottom of the night light frame. Secure with fabric glue. 5 Use fabric glue to add beaded trim to the vertical lines on the night light as shown.

Sterling Swirl Ring by Melody Fletcher

1 Use flat nose pliers to bend 10 gauge sterling silver square wire into a swirl shape. Use a jewelerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s saw to cut the swirl from the spool of 10 gauge wire. 2 Use shears to cut a piece of 22 gauge sterling silver sheet to fit under the swirl. Cut a strip of 22 gauge silver sheet the required length of ring size. 3 Flux all pieces and apply heat with torch and add solder to all joints until the swirl is in place on top of the cut sheet. 4 Bend the ends of the ring band together. Apply flux, heat, and solder. 5 Place the two separate pieces (ring band and top) in a heated pickle bath and then remove with copper tongs when the fire scale disappears. 6 With swirl side down, apply flux and solder the ring band to the flat back of the swirl. 7 Place the ring in a pickle bath and then remove with copper tongs when the fire scale disappears. Use a sanding disc or polishing wheel to smooth the rough edges. 8 Place in a tumbler for approximately two hours to create a high polish.

Pretty in Pink Handbag Charm

1 Begin by attaching the mini key ring to the trigger clasp - you may find it easier to use a pair of Split Ring Pliers to open the mini key ring - it saves your nails! 2 Next cut three different lengths of the fancy chain - you can make the handbag charm as long and dangly as you like! 3 Take the three different lengths of chain and add them to the mini key ring - again you may find it easier to use Split Ring Pliers to do this. 4 Finally add all the beads and charms to the chain using the jump rings and headpins - to add the beads youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to thread them onto the headpins and then use your Round Nose Pliers to create wire wrapped loops which you can attach to the chain before you finish... Voila! Pop it on your bag and wait for the complements!
