Colour, colour everywhere... I am really excited to bring to you this issue packed with vibrant hues and tones to tantalise your creative taste buds. Starting with the beautiful cover project showing a fusion of hot pink and tangy orange, statement necklaces are a top trend and this really does make a statement. Check out the Funky Chic section for some more inspiration from page 82 – a particular favourite of mine is on page 85, such and wonderful eclectic design. These bright combinations remind me of the 80’s an era when people were not afraid to experiment with colour, why not give it a try? Birds are everywhere, and I don’t just mean in our gardens! Home decor, crafts, art and now they have landed at Bead Trends. We are pleased to feature a number of bird charms that really do give a design wings. If you fancy using birds in your beading see if our designers work sparks your creativity! Our guest designer is the very talented ‘Stacy Curry’, her detailed and intricate yet clean designs are simply beautiful. I was inspired by her story, she has been creating and selling her work since she was 16, she has followed her dreams and made her hobby a career. Finest Fuchsia by Yvonne Irvin 1 Cut two 6”, two 3”, and two 4” lengths of hot pink chain. Cut one 6”, two 3” and two 4” lengths of burnt sienna and merlot chain. Connect a hot pink hook to four 6” lengths of chain and a 6/0 seed bead using a 9mm jumpring. Use two 9mm jumprings on the other end of the chain to connect two chains together. Connect the two 9mm jumprings together with another 9mm jumpring. Using 7mm jumprings, attach four MyELEMENTS hourglass shapes adding two 7.25mm o-rings on each side as shown. 2 Cut a ½ turn length of necklace memory wire and make a simple loop on one end. String 6mm 0-rings alternating with 4mm black round beads. Finish with a beaded ruffle and make a simple loop. Cut a length of black artistic wire and make a wrapped loop. String a 1 3/8” lampwork bead, a beaded ruffle, and a 10mm black round bead and make a wrapped loop. Note: Use a permanent marker to hide silver on memory wire loops. 3 Connect two 1” pink vintage rings to the bottom hourglass using 9mm jumprings. Connect the lampwork bead from step 2 using a 13mm jumpring. Add two 9mm jumprings and 3” lengths of chain. Use 7mm jumprings to attach one end of the cut memory wire to the side of the bottom hourglass and the other end to the bottom of the lampwork bead and chain. Connect a lampwork disk with a 13mm jumpring. 4 Using 13mm jumprings, connect a hand painted glass focal to a 13mm jumpring and connect 3” and 4” lengths of chain on each side. 5 Connect 6/0 seed beads to the lengths of chain using 6mm jumprings as shown. Connect MyELEMENTS hoops to the outside two lengths of chain using 6mm jumprings. Connect black lifesaver beads to the MyELEMENTS hoops using 6mm jumprings. 6 Cut a 6” length of black artistic wire and form a 1” loop by wrapping it around a dowel or marker. Keep a tail on each end. String 4mm round beads alternating with 6mm o-rings. Add a 1” pink vintage ring and string both wire tails through a lampwork disc and make a wrapped loop. Connect to the cut chains and seed beads using a 9mm jumpring. 7 Free form wrap a 20mm jumpring with pink artistic wire. Add a 6mm o-ring to each end. Connect to the loop from step 6 using three 9mm jumprings and connect to the remaining 4” lengths of chain using two 9mm jumprings. 8 Cut a length of beading wire and string seven 6/0 seed beads, alternating with smaller seed beads. String a crimp bead over both ends of the wire and form a loop. Crimp the crimp bead. String three 6mm o-rings to cover the crimp bead and then alternate stringing 6mm o-rings and 4mm rounds to desired length. String an 18mm vintage round bead. String three o-rings. 9 String a crimp bead and seven 6/0 seed beads alternating with smaller seed beads. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead, forming a loop and crimp. Connect to the chains at the end of the necklace using two 9mm jumprings. Make an extender chain by connecting a strand of 7mm jumprings strung with 6/0 seed beads. 7

Scheherazade by Liz Fuller-Nicoll

1 Cut a 4â&#x20AC;? length of 20 gauge copper wire and make a wrapped loop. String an 8mm multicoloured acrylic round bead, a vintage flat metal spacer, a Soocho jade bead, a flat spacer, and an 8mm acrylic round bead and make a wrapped loop. 2 String a headpin with a 4mm Swarovski topaz crystal bicone and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the first wrapped loop created in step 1. Repeat two more times using a 4mm Swarovski fuchsia crystal bicone and a 6mm Swarovski amethyst crystal bicone. 3 Cut a length of beading wire. 4 String a crimp bead, a 3mm copper bicone spacer, and half of a copper toggle clasp. Thread the wire back through the 3mm copper bicone spacer and the crimp bead and crimp. 5 String beads in the pattern shown or as desired mirroring both halves of the necklace and adding the pendant created in steps 1 and 2 to the centre of the design. 6 Repeat step 4 using the other half of the clasp. Trim excess wire. 11

Rose Quartz Drop by Kristy Abner

1 String a gunmetal headpin with a rose quartz nugget and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a 20mm sterling silver oxidised round link. 2 Cut four 6â&#x20AC;? lengths of loop chain. Connect the last link in each of the lengths of chain to a 6mm open link of chain. Repeat for the other end of the chains. 3 String the rose quartz nugget from step 1 onto the chains. Connect a 20mm sterling silver oxidised round link to the 6mm open link on one end of the chains. Repeat for the other end of the chains. 4 Cut two 5â&#x20AC;? lengths of circle chain. Connect one cut length to the 20mm sterling silver oxidised round link on each end of the necklace. 5 Connect half of a toggle clasp to each end of the necklace.

Butterfly Goddess by Christina Porter 1 Cut a 3” length of beading wire. String a crimp bead and a jumpring. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. String a 3x5mm fire-polished transparent pink/copper marble Picasso rondelle, three 3mm fire-polished purple iris round beads, and a crimp bead. String enough 11/0 purple seed beads to go through a dichroic glass disc bead and then back through the crimp bead and crimp. Trim excess wire. 2 Cut a 5” length of beading wire. String a crimp bead and enough 11/0 purple seed beads to go through the other side of the dichroic glass disc bead. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. String an amethyst heishi bead, approximately 2” of fluorite chips, an amethyst heishi bead, a 3mm fire-polished purple iris round bead, and a crimp bead. String the jumpring on the bottom of a metal bird connecter. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. 3 Connect the eye of an eyepin to the top of the metal bird connecter. String the eyepin with a 3x5mm fire-polished transparent pink/ copper marble Picasso rondelle and make a simple loop. 4 Cut a 1 ½” length of brass chain. Connect one end of the chain to the simple loop on the eyepin from step 3 and connect the other end of the chain to one half of a toggle clasp. 5 Repeat steps 1-4 using the other half of the toggle clasp to create a second beaded strand. Connect each beaded strand to the top of a 48mm brass winged goddess filigree pendant. 6 Cut a 1” length of brass chain. Connect one end of the chain to the loop on the 2-strand side of a 2 to 1 strand recycled green crystal connector. Repeat adding a second chain to the other side of the connector. 7 Connect the two chains to the bottom of the 48mm brass winged goddess filigree pendant. 8 Connect a metal bird connecter with jumprings to the chains as shown. 9 String a headpin with a 4mm Swarovski crystal bicone and make a wrapped loop. Repeat three more times. Attach a beaded headpin to each jumpring connecting the chain to the pendant and the bird connector to the chain. 10 String an eyepin with a 15x10mm recycled green crystal diamond shaped bead and make a simple loop, connecting it to the single loop side of the 2 to 1 strand recycled green crystal connector. 11 String a headpin with a seed bead and a 3x5mm fire-polished transparent pink/copper marble Picasso rondelle and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the crystal connector. Repeat. 12 Cut a 15” length of brass chain into five strands of various lengths and attach to the other end of the crystal diamond eyepin with a jumpring. 14

Will It Go Round in Circles by Shannon Schmid

1 Cut a 24” length of beading wire. 2 String a 1x4mm gold-filled tube and a 2x4mm sapphire briolette. Repeat, alternating beads until 17” or the desired length is achieved. Secure the ends with tape or a bead stopper. 3 Cut a 3” length of 3/8” round gold-filled chain. Cut a length of 26 gauge gold-filled wire and string three 2x4mm sapphire briolettes, positioning them in the centre of the wire. Bend the wire above the briolettes. Bring the wires together and string a 2x2mm vermeil faceted cube bead. Make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the end of the 3” length of chain. 4 Cut a 17” length of textured gold-filled round chain. Connect the open end of the 3” length of chain to the 17” length of chain using a Snapeez jumpring. 5 Beginning at one end, thread the beaded strand over and under each of the large circles in the 17” length of chain until the end is reached. Stretch both chains out and add or subtract beads as needed. 6 String three 2x2mm vermeil faceted cube beads and a crimp bead on each end of the beaded strand. 7 String one end through the Snapeez jumpring added in step 4. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and the last few beads in the design and crimp. Trim excess wire. Repeat on the other end of the beaded strand using a 9mm lobster claw clasp. 17

1 Cut ten 1 ½” lengths of 3.5x4mm antique brass cable chain. 2 Connect a 7.25mm jumpring to the end of one of the lengths of chain and the eye of an eyepin to the other end of the chain. 3 String the eyepin with a 6mm fire-polished silver crystal bead and make a simple loop, connecting it to another length of chain. 4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until five lengths of chain, three jumprings, and three 6mm fire-polished silver crystal beads have been connected into a strand as shown. 5 Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 creating a second strand. Connect a lobster claw clasp to the jumpring at the end of the strand. 6 Connect the two strands at the crystal ends of the strands using a 10mm jumpring. 7 Cut a 3” and a 1 ½” length of chain. Connect one end of each chain to the 10mm jumpring added in step 6. Connect a 7.25mm jumpring to the other end of each chain. 8 String a headpin with a 6mm fire-polished silver crystal bead and make a simple loop. Connect it to the eye of an eyepin. String the eyepin with a 10mm silver-plated rhinestone ball and make a simple loop. Connect it to the 7.25mm jumpring at the end of one of the lengths of chain from step 7. Repeat.

Lapis Paisley by Cindy Thomson

1 Cut a length of 16 gauge wire and using round nose pliers, form it into a paisley shape. repeat with a shorter length of wire forming a smaller paisley shape as shown. 2 using a ball peen hammer, hammer the two paisley shapes to flatten, add texture, and work harden. 3 Cut a length of 24 gauge wire and begin wrapping the outside of the large paisley shape, adding beads as shown. At the centre right and bottom right corner of the paisley, hold the smaller paisley in place and wrap both pieces together. 4 String an eyepin with a lapis lazuli diamond-cut bead and make a simple loop. repeat. 5 String an eyepin with a lapis lazuli round bead and make a simple loop. repeat. 6 Cut a three link length of gunmetal chain and connect the end link to one of the loops at the top of the paisley pendant. Connect the other end of the chain to one of the lapis lazuli diamond links created in step 4. Cut a five link length of gunmetal chain and connect the end link to the other end of the lapis lazuli diamond link. Connect one of the lapis lazuli round links created in step 5 to the other end of the chain. Cut a 7-8â&#x20AC;? length of chain and connect the end link to the other end of the lapis lazuli round link. 7 repeat step 6 to create the other side of the necklace. 8 Connect half of a lobster claw clasp to each end of the necklace chain.

Mother of Mine by Wendy Emerson BRACELET 1 Using the largest area of needle nose pliers, form five large jumprings using 14 gauge sterling silver dead soft round wire. Cut and hammer with chasing hammer and file to form a tight fit with each. Set aside. 2 Using the 14 gauge wire form a hook closure. Work from spool to minimise waste. Texturise with a chasing hammer and set aside. 3 String a headpin with a 4mm Swarovski vintage rose bicone, three 8x3mm mother of pearl heishi beads, and a 4mm Swarovski vintage rose bicone and make a wrapped loop. 4 String a headpin with a 4mm Swarovski vintage rose bicone, a 13x9mm champagne faceted polished crystal class bead, and a 4mm Swarovski vintage rose bicone and make a wrapped loop. 5 String a headpin with a daisy spacer, a 2mm silver round bead, a 7x6mm Thai Hill Tribe silver rondelle, a 2mm silver round bead, and a daisy spacer and make a wrapped loop. Set aside. 6 Using the 22 gauge wire and working from the spool, string a 3mm silver round, three peach stick pearls, and a 3mm silver round. Form a simple wrapped loop at the top and leave enough of a wire tail to come back up, weave around the pearls and then wrap around the top wrapped loop. Trim and tuck wire as needed. 7 Cut a 10â&#x20AC;? length of beading wire and string a 3mm silver round, a crimp tube, a 3mm silver round, and a wire guard. Thread the wire back through the beads and crimp. Cover the crimp bead with a crimp cover. Repeat four more times. 8 String the first strand with 32 top-drilled teardrop pearls, a 3mm silver round, a crimp tube, a 3mm silver round, and the wire guard. Thread the wire back through the silver round and the crimp tube and crimp. Cover the crimp tube with a crimp cover and set aside. 9 String the second strand with a 4mm Swarovski vintage rose bicone and a cocoa pearl. Repeat twelve times and string a bicone, a 3mm silver round, a crimp tube, a 3mm silver round, and a wire guard. Thread the wire back through the silver round and the crimp tube and crimp. Cover the crimp tube with a crimp cover and set aside. 10 String the third strand with a champagne button pearl and a heishi. Repeat nineteen times and string another button pearl, a 3mm silver round, a crimp tube, a 3mm silver round, and a wire guard. Thread the wire back through the silver round and the crimp tube and crimp. Cover the crimp tube with a crimp cover and set aside. 11 String the fourth strand with a light peach bicone and a peach stick pearl. Repeat sixteen times and string a peach bicone, a 3mm silver round, a crimp tube, a 3mm silver round, and a wire guard. Thread the wire back through the silver round and the crimp tube and crimp. Cover the crimp tube with a crimp cover and set aside. 12 String the last strand with two 4mm Swarovski vintage rose bicones. String a 13x9mm crystal glass bead and another bicone. Repeat three times and string an 18x14mm crystal glass bead. String a rose bicone and a 13x9mm crystal glass bead; repeat three times and string two rose bicones, a 3mm silver round, a crimp tube, a 3mm silver round, and a wire guard. Thread the wire back through the 3mm silver round and the crimp tube and crimp. Cover the crimp tube with a crimp cover and set aside. 13 Using a 6mm jumpring, attach all five strands to one of the large handmade jumprings from step 1. Repeat with another 6mm jumpring. 14 Braid the strands in a loose fashion ensuring there is enough give to drape around the wrist. Using two 6mm jumprings and a large jumpring from step 1, repeat step 13. 15 On one end attach the hook from step 2 and the heishi charm from step 3. 16 On the other end attach the remaining handmade large jumprings from step 1 and the remaining charms.

Connect to the eye of an eyepin. 3 String the eyepin with a 4mm Swarovski vintage rose crystal bicone, a 13x9mm crystal glass bead, and a 4mm Swarovski vintage rose crystal bicone and make a wrapped loop. Connect to an earwire.

Pearls on a Swirl by Erin Strother 1 Cut a 2” length of 24 gauge vintage bronze craft wire and form a simple loop. String an 8mm champagne potato pearl and make a wrapped loop, wrapping the excess wire around the top of the pearl. 2 Repeat step 1 using a 6mm olive potato pearl and a 5mm brown potato pearl. 3 Repeat step 1 using a 5mm gold button pearl. 4 Cut a 7” length of 24 gauge wire and string a 7mm white potato pearl, positioning it 3” from the end of the wire. Wrap the 3” tail around the pearl two times, ending at the top. Wrap the remainder of the short wire around the longer tail of wire to form a wrapped loop. String a 12mm white coin pearl and form a wrapped loop, wrapping the excess wire around the top of the pearl. 5 Cut a 4” length of 18 gauge wire and create a loose spiral approximately 17mm wide on one end of the wire. String the pearl dangles created in steps 1-4 onto the swirl, then create a second smaller spiral at the top of the wire, spiraling the opposite direction as the bottom spiral. Hammer the swirl to add texture and to work harden. Note: Be careful to keep the pearl dangles out of the way. Attach a 4mm and a 6mm jumpring to the top of the swirl and set aside. 6 Cut a 1” length of 24 gauge wire and form a wrapped loop. String a 6mm olive potato pearl and form a wrapped loop. 7 Cut a 1” length of 24 gauge wire and form a wrapped loop, connecting it to the last wrapped loop from the previous pearl link. String a 7mm white potato pearl and form a wrapped loop. 8 Repeat step 7 three times using a gold pearl and two brown pearls. Connect one end of the pearl links to the top jumpring on the pendant. 9 Cut a 4 ½” length of 3mm natural brass rolo chain and a 4 ½” length of 3mm antique brass cable chain. Connect both chains to the free end of the pearl links using a 4mm jumpring. 10 Connect a hook clasp to the end of the chains using a 4mm jumpring. 11 Repeat steps 6-9 for the other side of the necklace using a brown, an olive, a white, a gold, and an olive pearl. 12 Connect a 4mm jumpring to the ends of both chains and connect an 8mm jumpring and two 4mm jumprings. Connect another 8mm jumpring. 13 Cut a 1” length of 24 gauge wire and form a small simple loop. String a gold pearl and form a wrapped loop, connecting it to the last 8mm jumpring on the jumpring chain created in step 12.

BRACELET 1 Cut two 2 Âźâ&#x20AC;? lengths of 13-14mm sterling silver oval chain. Cut a length of 24 gauge sterling silver wire and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to half of a Bali toggle clasp. String a freshwater coin pearl and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the first link on both of the two cut lengths of chain. 2 Cut a length of 24 gauge sterling silver wire and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the last link in the two cut lengths of chain. String an 8mm faceted rose quartz rondelle and make a wrapped loop. 3 Repeat step 2 three times using a rectangle pearl, an 8mm faceted rose quartz rondelle, and a 6mm freshwater button pearl. Connect the first wrapped loop on each link to the last wrapped loop of the previous link. BASIC BRACELET 1 Cut a 36” length of Fireline. String a 6mm fire-polished bead and an 11/0 seed bead. Repeat three times, leaving a 10” tail. Tie a knot. Pass the needle back through the first six beads. 2 String seven seed beads and skip the 6mm bead. Pass the needle through the next seed bead, a 6mm bead, and another seed bead. Repeat, except do not sew through the last seed bead. 3 Begin a recurring pattern of stringing a seed bead and a 6mm bead three times, and another seed bead. Starting with the 6mm bead at the end of step 2, string through the three pairs of 6mm and seed beads. 4 Repeat step 2 and 3 for a total of 14 sections (approximately 7” bracelet). End with step 2 again for a total of 15 sections. 5 String a 6mm bead, five seed beads, and half of a toggle clasp. Sew through the last seed bead picked up, then string four more seed beads and sew through the 6mm bead. Reinforce the clasp by passing the needle through the seed beads and clasp again. Using one needle, pick up a seed bead, and cross the other needle through it. 3 Using each needle, pick up a 4mm fire-polished crystal and a seed bead, crossing the needles through the next 6mm bead in the band. 4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 the full length of the bracelet. 5 Pass one needle through the 6mm bead at the end of the bracelet and sew through the next six seed beads along the edge of the bracelet. 6 String a 4mm metallic fire-polished crystal and sew through the middle three seed beads of the next section. 7 Repeat step 6 along the edge of the bracelet. Stacey Curry Stacey Curry was born and raised in rural Montana, where the beauty of both the plains and the mountains fueled her creativity. She began designing and selling jewellery to family as well as friends at the tender age of sixteen. She continued to cultivate her creativity and developed her own jewellery line featuring one-ofa-kind designs. In 2003 she introduced her products on the web and a star was born – Star Hitched Wagon™ that is. Stacey has always been passionate about creating, and states “I can’t imagine a life without creativity.” Stacey’s mother and father were a great inspiration to her growing up. Her mother, a ceramic artist who crocheted and loved to bake, was always wonderful about including Stacey and her sisters. Her father let them create in the garage with his tools and scraps of wood. “There really wasn’t a right or wrong way - they just let us do what we were inspired to do. I feel I have always been creatively awake. I am blessed.” Stacey loves being outdoors and finds nature as an unending source of inspiration. “I am amazed at the huge bare tree or one full of big beautiful green leaves. I am equally amazed at the tiny snail hiding under a fallen branch. When in this environment, my mind is clear. I love running and walking at the local lake or woods, there I am truly

at peace, fully aware of my abundant blessings. I can clear my mind and then let the inspiration come. I can see a new colour combination in the bare brown trees covered with bits of snow, maybe white agate with picture jasper. The lake covered with snow may inspire amazonite with white freshwater pearls. I also find inspiration in a name. When I see a wide open space that it is beautiful and quiet, I feel so calm, and this could lead to me adding a ‘Clearing’ or ‘Reset’ or ‘Anew’ to my collection.” Nature is not the only place that Stacey finds her design inspirations. “A beautiful painting with certain colours inspires another new colour combination. A quote brings about a feeling which translates into a new

named set. A random stranger’s outfit inspires a design. Truly with this art, the sky is the limit.” Stacey says, “Jewellery design is magical when it all comes together. I love Bali and Thai silver and rarely make a piece without one or both. Gemstones and pearls make me giddy. Garnets and jaspers are my favourites. They are all treasures that speak to me in different ways. Amethyst Rose by Lynn Gonzalez This beautiful necklace was created using an old sterling silver clip on earring that Lynn found in her mum’s old jewellery box.

1 Cut a 4” length of 20 gauge sterling silver wire. Bend the wire in half forming a U shape. Take a length of 24 gauge sterling silver wire and wrap it around one side of the U shape several times. String an amethyst chevron bead, lining it up to the middle of the U shape. Wrap the 24 gauge wire around the other side of the U shape. Repeat adding chevron beads inside of the U shape until you are approximately ½” from the end. Using a dowel, bend the U shaped wire and form a bail. 2 Open a vintage rose clip on earring and slide the U into the hinge of the earring. Wrap the open ends of the U around each other to secure. Trim excess wire and use chain nose pliers to bend and hide the ends of the wires under the clip. 3 Cut a length of 20 gauge silver wire and string an amethyst teardrop, positioning it in the centre of the wire. Bend the wires above the teardrop and wrap the shortest wire around the longer wire. Trim the shorter wire. Use the remaining wire and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the hole in the end of the clip on earring. Wrap the wire down and around the top of the amethyst teardrop. 4 Cut a length of beading wire and string a crimp bead and half of a lobster claw clasp. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. String quartz chips to the desired length. String a crimp bead and the other half of the clasp. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. Trim excess wire. 5 String the pendant on the beaded strand. 62

1 Connect a fancy twisted jumpring to one end of a watch face using a basic jumpring. Connect a frosted green Lucite leaf to the basic jumpring with another jumpring. String a headpin with a medium burgundy Lucite flower and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the basic jumpring. 2 Cut a length of chain and connect one end of the chain to the other side of the watch face and connect a hook clasp to the other end. Note: The hook will attach to the fancy jumpring when wearing the bracelet. 3 Connect a variety of metal charms and frosted green leaves to the chain using jumprings. 4 String headpins with Lucite flowers and connect to the chain as desired using wrapped loops.

Dulce de Leche by Molly Schaller

1 Cut five ¼” lengths of French wire and one ½” length. 2 String a big-eye needle with a 30” length of high performance bead cord and thread the ½” length of French wire onto the cord. Slide the wire to the centre of the cord and pass the cord through the largest loop of a wildflower pendant. Holding the two ends of the cord as one, with both of them threaded through the big-eye needle, string an 8mm Swarovski bronze crystal pearl. Slide the pearl down toward the French wire so that the wire makes a loop around the largest loop of the wildflower pendant. Tie a double knot in the doubled cord to secure the pearl. Add a drop of jewellery glue and trim the tail. String a 4mm silver round bead to cover the knot. 3 Pass both lengths of cord in the same direction through a 6mm pearl. Separate the cords and use a big-eye needle on each end. String a seed bead, a 3mm pearl, and a seed bead on each strand. Pass the needles in the opposite directions through the hole of a 4mm pearl. Pull the strand to tighten. String a seed bead, a 3mm pearl, and a seed bead onto each strand. 4 Repeat step 3 ten times. Thread both strands of the cord through a big-eye needle and string a 6mm pearl, a 4mm silver round, a 6mm pearl, a ¼” length of French wire, and the ring end of a Thai Karen Hill Tribe silver star rose clasp. Pass the needle back through a 6mm pearl and a 4mm silver round. Tie a double knot and apply a drop of jewellery glue. Let dry and trim excess cord. 5 Remove size 4 silk cord from the card and stretch it to remove the kinks. Make a knot at the end and string an 8mm pearl, a ¼” length of French wire, and the lower loop of the wildflower pendant, pulling the beads toward the knot but leaving a 2” tail. Pass the needle back through the 8mm pearl and make a double knot to secure the pearl in place with the French wire wrapped around the loop. Apply a drop of jewellery glue and trim the tail. String a 4mm silver round to cover the knot. String an 8mm pearl. 6 String a seed bead and an 8mm pearl. Repeat 35 more times. String a 4mm silver round, an 8mm pearl, a ¼” length of French wire and the opposite ring on the clasp. Pass the needle back through the 8mm pearl and the 4mm silver round. Tie a double knot and apply a drop of jewellery glue. Trim excess cord. 7 Make a knot at the end of the remaining silk cord and string a 6mm pearl, a ¼” length of French wire and the upper loop of the wildflower pendant, pulling the beads toward the knot but leaving a 2” tail. Pass the needle back through the 6mm pearl and tie a double knot to secure the pearl in place with the French wire wrapped around the loop. Apply a drop of jewellery glue and trim the tail. String a 4mm silver round to cover the knot. String a 6mm pearl. 8 String a seed bead and a 6mm pearl. Repeat 40 more times. String a 4mm silver round, a 6mm pearl, a ¼” length of French wire, and the same ring of the clasp used in step 6. Pass the needle back through the final 6mm pearl and 4mm silver round. Make a double knot and apply a drop of jewellery glue. Trim excess cord. 9 String a headpin with an 11x8mm Swarovski creamrose pearl teardrop and make a simple loop. 10 Open a 6mm jumpring and add a hammered twig, the creamrose pearl teardrop, and a hammered twig. Connect the jumpring to the lowest loop on the wildflower pendant so that it hangs below the wildflower. Close the jumpring. 69

I came across a quilt made by my Grandma Smith while looking through the back of a closet. I felt a little sad that it had been packed away for over 15 years. I had used it on and off from the time I received it as a child all the way through my years at college. My Grandma had severe arthritis, but was always working on a quilt or a crocheted afghan for her many children and grandchildren. I remember feeling special when she selected me back in the 1970’s as one of the grandkids to receive one of her beloved quilts. Making this quilt was not a simple task since Grandma did everything by hand. I remember my mum bringing Grandma fabric remnants from clothes Mum had made for us. I fondly recall a purple fabric with raised white velvet button designs that was used to make me a smock top. I enjoy thinking about the process behind the colour combinations and patterns my Grandma created and often wish I had the chance to see all of her work in one place. I decided it would be a fun project to figure out a way to represent the quilt in a piece of jewellery. After some trial and error with other methods, I found printable fabric with a sticky back. I knew immediately this would be a great way to showcase the patchwork squares on beads. It started with taking photos of the quilt, then shrinking the squares to bead-size. The fabric patterns don’t come across that clearly, but the colour combinations are loud and clear. how unique! when I told Mum about it she was very excited, especially since she hadn’t seen the quilt for years.

1 Take a photo or locate existing photos, of a special quilt, or other item you would like to incorporate into your wearable photo album. 2 upload or scan photo(s) and size to fit the beads. 3 Print photos onto sticky-backed fabric. Cut out each photo and adhere to the surface of 14 20x20mm square glass beads. 4 layer several coats of Mod Podge or craft varnish over each bead with drying time in between, following product instructions. 5 Cut a 10â&#x20AC;? length of beading wire. String a crimp tube and a lobster claw clasp. Thread the wire back through the crimp tube and crimp. 6 String 4mm and 6mm Swarovski crystal bicones followed by a glass bead and 6mm bicone. Continue adding remaining five glass beads with 6mm bicones between each. String a 4mm bicone, a crimp tube, and a split ring. Thread the wire back through the crimp tube and the last few beads in the design and crimp. Trim excess wire. 7 String a headpin with a 4mm Swarovski crystal bicone, a glass bead, and a 6mm bicone and make a simple loop, connecting it to the end of a four link length of chain. using a split ring, connect the other end of the chain to the split ring added in step 6.

This project has taken my family down memory lane with fond thoughts and a new appreciation of Grandmaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s talents and giving nature. A real joy! It can easily be converted to showcase a variety of artwork, photos, or handiwork that loved ones are proud of and want to carry on their wrist for all to see!

Make ten dangles with the Greek ceramic discs (save five Greek ceramic discs to be used later), 15mm o-rings, plastic vintage hoops & rings, and 13 & 20mm anodised jumprings. Connect in a random fashion on both sides of the chain (five on each side). Connect half of a hook & eye clasp to each end of the necklace using a 9mm jumpring with a 6mm o-ring. 2 Cut a length of beading wire and string a crimp bead, five 6/0 seed beads, and six 8/0 seed beads, alternating to form a loop. String the top hole of a funky face focal in the centre of the loop. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. String a ¾” hand painted wooden bead, a 6mm o-ring, a 1½” resin hoop, a 6mm o-ring, a 1” hand painted wooden bead, a 6mm o-ring, and the top of the resin hoop. String a 6mm o-ring, an inlaid resin square, a crimp bead, five 6/0 seed beads, and six 8/0 seed beads. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp. Cover the crimp bead with rubber o-rings. Connect to the chain with a 13mm jumpring and a few o-rings. Connect to the bottom of the funky face focal with 9mm jumprings. 4 Using memory wire and flexible bugle beads, make two arcs adding Greek ceramic discs and 6mm o-rings. Finish both arcs with a seed bead and loops at each end. Make six chain dangles using remaining lengths of black & kiwi chain and attach an 8mm MyELEMENTS circle to each chain. Using a 6mm jumpring, add all those pieces to a 9mm jumpring, attaching both arcs in the centre. Attach the bottom of an arc to the top of the funky face focal using a 9mm jumpring. Attach the other arc to the chain using two 6mm jumprings. Add one 10mm MyELEMENTS circle to the bottom of the top arc with a 6mm jumpring. 1 Cut a 3” length of 18 gauge bronze craft wire and form a simple loop. String a 5mm copper round, a 40mm wood tube, and a 5mm copper round and form a simple loop. 2 Cut an 8” length of 24 gauge bronze craft wire and form a wrapped loop. Holding the loop at the bottom in the middle of the wood tube, wrap the wire around the tube six times. Wrap the wire around the wrapped loop several times to secure. Trim excess wire. 3 Repeat step 2 on the left side and on the right side of the tube. Set tube aside. 4 Cut a 6” length of 24 gauge wire and string an 8mm black lava round, positioning it in the centre of the wire. Bring both sides of the wire above the bead and create a wrapped loop, wrapping the excess wire down around the top of the bead creating a wire bead cap. Repeat. Repeat and set aside. 5 Cut a 6” length of 24 gauge wire and make a wrapped loop. String a champagne pearl and wrap the wire around the pearl three times ending at the wrapped loop. Wrap the excess wire around the wrapped loop several times to secure and trim excess wire. 6 Cut a 10” length of 24 gauge wire and make a wrapped loop. String one side of a wood ring and wrap the wire around the ring eight or nine times. String the pearl created in step 5 and position it in the centre of the wood ring. Wrap the remaining wire around the wrapped loop several times to secure. Trim excess wire. 7 String a headpin through the inside hole on the other side of the wood ring and make a wrapped loop. String a headpin with a seed bead, a 12mm olive jade square, and a seed bead and make a simple loop, connecting it to the wrapped loop at the bottom of the wood ring. Set aside. 8 Open a 12mm jumpring and attach it to the wrapped loop on the left side of the wood tube. Before closing the ring, string two rubber o-rings and a lava dangle created in step 4. Repeat on the right side of the wood tube. Open another 12mm jumpring and string it through the rubber rings on the left jumprings, the wrapped loop in the middle of the wood tube, and the rubber rings on the right jumpring. String the wood ring pendant created in steps 6 and 7 and close the jumpring. 9 Cut a 1 ½” length of 24 gauge wire and make a wrapped loop. String a champagne pearl and make a wrapped loop. Repeat, connecting the second wrapped loop to the first pearl link. 10 Cut a 2” length of 24 gauge wire and form a wrapped loop. String a seed bead, a jade square, a lava round, and a seed bead and make a wrapped loop. Connect to the pearl link using a 6mm jumpring. 11 Cut a 1 ½” length of 24 gauge wire and form a wrapped loop. String a champagne pearl and make a wrapped loop. String a 16x12mm black onyx faceted lentil and make a wrapped loop. Repeat five times. 4 Connect five of the black onyx faceted lentil links to 1 and 1 ½” copper discs with the centre punched out using 6mm and 8mm copper jumprings as shown. Note: The centre of the necklace has three copper discs with the 1 ½” disc in the centre. 1 Working directly off of a spool of 20 gauge stainless steel wire, string a bead cap, a turquoise bead, and a bead cap and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to one half of an angel heart toggle clasp. Cut the wire from the spool and make a wrapped loop. 2 Repeat step 1, connecting the first wrapped loop to the last wrapped loop from the previous step. 3 Repeat step 2, adding beads and bead caps in the pattern shown or as desired until the design reaches the desired length. 4 Connect the last wrapped loop to the other half of the toggle clasp.

Southwest Blessing by Wendy Emerson 1 Cut a length of 18 gauge bronze wire and make a wrapped loop. String a magnesite slab and make a wrapped loop. Set aside. 2 String a headpin with a turquoise nugget and a 12mm bead cap and make a wrapped loop. 3 Repeat step 2 using a 15mm magnesite round and a 16mm bead cap, a 15x12mm magnesite cross, and a 17x12mm turquoise Zuni-style bear. 4 Flatten a 16mm bead cap and centre over a 15mm jumpring and bend the tips over to secure. Note: If the bead cap is centreed there should be four openings. Attach a 7.25mm jumpring to each of the top two openings. 1 Cut a 7” length of 2-3mm sterling silver round link cable chain. 2 Hand select approximately 100 turquoise beads to wire to the chain. Note: Example design used two specific shapes and at least three sizes to create a “river” effect. 3 String a handmade ball end headpin with a turquoise bead and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a link in the chain. Continue wrapping the wire down the top of the bead creating a spiral cap on top of the bead. Repeat, adding two more beads to the link in the chain. Repeat with each link in the chain or to desired fullness. 4 Connect one half of a handmade S hook clasp to each end of the chain.

1 String a headpin with a turquoise briolette and create a wrapped loop after cutting off the head of the headpin. String a length of beading wire with 9” of a symmetrical pattern of beads, adding the wrapped briolette at the centre of the design. At the ends of the design, string a crimp bead and thread the wire back through the crimp bead and crimp, leaving a loop of wire at either end. Cover the crimp beads with crimp covers. Set aside. 2 String three matching sets of beads onto eyepins and finish with simple loops. String one eyepin with three beads and make a simple loop. Connect the eyepins together with jumprings or by opening the eyepin. Connect two oval chain links into the design symmetrically. 3 Cut a 6 ½” length of textured chain. 4 Open two large oval chain links and string one of them with the beaded strand loop from step 1, the last eyepin in the strand from step 2, and the end link of chain from step 3. Repeat in reverse for the other open oval chain link. Close one of the oval links. 5 Cut a 9 ½” length of curb chain and string one end onto the open oval link from step 4. Close the oval link. On the other end of the curb chain connect the bar end of a toggle clasp using a jumpring.

1 Oxidise sterling silver twig branches, headpins, and earwires by placing them in a solution of warm water and liver of sulfur. Remove when blackened, usually about ten minutes. Rinse with cool water and allow to dry on a paper towel. 2 Gently rub blackened earring components with fine steel wool. This will remove the black on the surface, creating wonderful detail from the natural pattern of the bark design on the twig branches. 3 Embellish with bead dangles. To achieve the cherry blossom effect, string a headpin with a tiny garnet round and a keshi pearl. Make a wrapped loop and connect to the earring as shown or as desired. Repeat. 4 String a headpin with a carnelian round or peridot bead. Make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the earring as shown or as desired. Make about eight dangles for each earring.

Chrysoprase Persuasion by Shannon Schmid

1 Cut a 6” length of 10mm gold-filled oval chain with 20mm dangling ovals. Cut 5 ½” and 5” of 10mm gold-filled oval chain. Connect the 5 ½” and 5” length of 10mm oval chain to each end of the 6” length of chain using 8mm Snapeez jumprings. Connect half of a toggle clasp to each end of the necklace using 8mm Snapeez jumprings. 2 Cut a 3” length of 26 gauge gold-filled wire and string a 10-12mm cushion cut top-drilled smoky topaz square, positioning it in the centre of the wire. Bend the wires above the smoky topaz and wrap one wire around the other. Trim the short wire. String a 2x2mm faceted vermeil bead and three 3mm faceted aquamarine gemstones and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a link in the 6” oval chain at the centre of the necklace. Repeat nine more times, connecting each dangle along the chain at evenly spaced intervals. 3 Cut a 3” length of 26 gauge gold-filled wire and string a 16x26mm faceted chrysoprase teardrop briolette, positioning it at the centre of the wire. Bend the wires above the chrysoprase and wrap one wire around the other. Trim the short wire. String a 4mm vermeil daisy spacer, a 4x7mm faceted aquamarine oval gemstone, and a daisy spacer and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the first 20mm dangling oval on the 6” length of chain. Repeat four more times connecting a chrysoprase to every other 20mm dangling oval on the chain. 4 Cut a 3” length of 26 gauge gold-filled wire and string a 6x16mm crazy cut smoky topaz, positioning it in the centre of the wire. Bend the wires above the topaz and wrap one wire around the other. Trim the short wire. String a 2x2mm faceted vermeil bead and three 3mm faceted aquamarine gemstones and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to one of the four remaining 20mm dangling ovals on the 6” length of chain. Repeat three more times connecting a topaz to each of the remaining 20mm dangling ovals.

1 Cut a 4-link length of sterling silver chain. Cut three 2-link lengths of chain. Cut six 3-link lengths of chain. Cut a 12” length of chain for the back of the necklace. 2 Cut eleven 3” lengths of 20 gauge sterling silver wire. 3 On a 3” length of wire make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the first link in a cut length of chain. String a 4mm sterling silver seamless round bead, a chrysoprase slab, and a 4mm sterling silver seamless round bead and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a different cut length of chain. 4 On a 3” length of wire make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the last link in the chain from step 3. String a 17mm hammered silver lentil bead and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to a new cut length of chain. 5 Repeat steps 3 and 4 adding silver and chrysoprase beads in the pattern shown or as desired. 122

String a Peruvian opal dyed emerald green, a Bali style silver bead, and a 4mm Swarovski emerald crystal bicone and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the end of the chain. 3 String a headpin with a 4mm Swarovski crystal bicone and make a wrapped loop, connecting it to the wrapped loop at the bottom of the Peruvian opal pendant. Repeat. 4 Repeat step 3 two times using two crystals on each headpin. Repeat step 3 using a crystal, a Bali style silver bead, and a crystal. 5 Connect a jumpring to the other end of the chain and measure up approximately 2â&#x20AC;? (or the size to accommodate the pendant) and connect to a link in the chain, creating a lariat style necklace.
