Washington Street, Cork First Semester - Fourth Year
This design project is centrally located in Cork city. The English Market is a significant part of Cork’s urban fabric. The proposed structure “a civic building” actively engages with the English Market and restitches and reactivates an already existing passageway at the rear. The building attempts to return a lost space within the public realm to become actively engaged by proposing an active ground level which is primarily public and allows for private engagement for other activities on the secondary floors.
Elevations in Context
The passageway which exists Market Lane; connects Patrick Street into the English Market. The project proposes to revitalise this lane way through the proposal of a distinctive route at Ground Level of the proposed structure. The building is made up of a series of arched brick walls which allows people to filter through the space in a monumental settings. The generous walkway allows for moments of pause and social interaction while the space in-between the structural brick archways is inhabited by traders which have a public presence to allow one to conduct business transactions.

Grafton Lane, Cork
Second Semester - Fourth Year This lane way connects two major urban thoroughfares in Cork, South Mall and Oliver Plunkett Street. The lane becomes the spine of the project and the architectural proposal had to respond to the limiting dimensions of a 2.6 metre wide space. The project proposes to reconnect the city with Grafton lane by revitalising it through a number of incisions. The urban infill project proposes a landscaped garden and an open air market. These extensions of space along with subtle shifts in the facade extends the dimensions of the lane. The proposed building program replaces an existing art and hobby shop while also extending bridges across the lane to allow for photography, video game and graphic design studios. On the top floor there is a gallery space allowing for exhibitions of the artists work. As one ascends vertically, one catches glimpses into the studio spaces which eventually terminates in a gallery which overlooks the back lands of Cork city.
An analysis into its existing state revealed that recent development has not responded sympathetically to the context. A new car park hovers at six stories tall which is inconsistent with the scale of the lane way. The car park’s blank facade at ground level disengages the urban citizen resulting in a lost within therevealed urban fabric. .An analysis into space its existing state that recent development has not responded sympathetically to the context. Detailed Exploration of Facade
St. Clare’s Avenue, Blackrock, Cork Gartland Architects
My initial work experience following college was with a small practice in Cork that focuses on residential projects. This proposal is a residential extension in Blackrock in Cork. The subject site is a 1930’s home which was extended on numerous occasions resulting in varying roof levels and numerous junctions of differing materials. A timber canopy that extends from the interior to the exterior realigns the misaligned surfaces. I exposed myself to different representational techniques by building models in sketch-up and then rendering them in Photoshop.

Town house, 224 West 22nd Street, New York ODA Architects
A town house in mid Manhattan was being redeveloped as a five story residental home. The architectural studio dealt mostly with high end residential developments in the city. Here I got to develop my skills in a large scale practice where coordination was key to developing and completing projects within limited time frames. This urban type is so prevalent in Manhattan and composes the urban grain and heritage of Manhattan. Original features such as the stoop had to be retained while the additional volumes added had to comply with the overall planning guidelines in New York to prevent overshadowing of adjacent properties.

Commercial and Residential Proposal, Sir John Rogerson Quay, Dublin OMP Architects
The subject site occupies the eastern tip of the peninsula in Dublin Docklands which separates Grand Canal Dock and the River Liffey. The site is in a prominent position within the cityscape allowing for panoramic views over the water and along the quays. The regeneration of the Dublin docklands has created successful urban spaces and a collection of tall buildings which now characterise the area. The masonry brick framework suggests an architecture of permanence and simplicity while echoing the heritage of the Dublin Docklands. proposed view of Britain Quay and blocks C, E, f and g from south east
