MICHELLE HANNA Interior Design Portfolio

HELLO I’m Michelle Hanna, a student at Washington State University, where I study Interior Design. I see Interior Design as the creative outlet to the world of construction bringing character, depth, and complexity to the built environment. From a floor plan that respects human scale to the texture patterns in upholstery that fill the room with emotion Interior Design has captivated my imagination. The most important trait in Interior Design is the ability to coalesce the needs and desires of a space without sacrificing functionality or flexibility. My time in University taught me how to multi-task, be a teammate, manage my time and adapt to any challenge. Interior Design is not just an occupation it’s a way of living, a passion. Through thick and thin I will always be eager to grow and evolve with Interior Design.

Platform Web Design Office Space Commercial

Platform Web Design is a office space that demonstrates the skill sets needed to design an office space for eight people comfortably. That offers multiple functions and a wide range of flexibility within 1600 square feet while remaining completely ADA accessible. The office furniture was selected via Steelcase while renderings were created through AutoDesk Revit.

Fall Semester 2013

Design Purpose This design provides a space that offers multiple seating setups and a wide range of work environments. The office space has organic, clean, simple, and comfortable aesthetics infuse with modernity. The main goal of the design is for it to be functional and easily adaptive. FURNITURE PLAN

Washington State University Informational Technology Department Atrium-Commercial

Washington State University IT Department was once home to a beautiful outdoor Atrium that hosted a variety of plants. The department took advantage of the Atrium by building windows that looked directly into the Atrium, harnessing its natural light. When Martin Stadium was built by the WSU Athletics Department they took out all vegetation and caped the Atrium. Because of the humidity from the natural soil, mold is starting to grow in the Atrium. With the atrium closed, the offices that once looked into the Atrium and bathed in its natural light now look with longing at a dark hole. My job was to take this and design a space that could work for the employees of the IT Department as a functional, flexible space, while still allowing space that could work for both the public and private with out sacrificing privacy for those in offices looking right into the atrium.

Fall Semester 2013

Atrium Current Stage

The theme I focused on was the idea of the public vs. private domains, with an emphasis on light, space, and an environment. The spaces I wanted to provide were a formal meeting space, informal meeting space, formal seating (table and lighting), and informal seating (chairs and sofas).

Space Planning Formal Meeting Room Seating Space Formal Seating Space Informal Meeting Space Water Feature

Public Vs. Private The greatest challenge with this space was making it welcoming to the public while allowing an active space for the employees inside. In order to allow natural light in the offices lining the atrium I designed windows that were frosted halfway up, allowing light to filter in without giving up privacy.

Johnson Hall at Washington State University is home to the Department of Apparel Design Merchandise and Textiles. The building is outdated and doesn’t provide a creative atmosphere for the students . The Head of the Department was tasked to update the building with a budget of only $50,000.00 The Interior Design Department was assigned to groups with Apparel Design, and Merchandise students to design a solution. This was a great project that taught me how to manage a budget, utilize materials, and work with a diverse team.

Boundary County Idaho Public Educational Library-Educational

Boundary County Idaho Public Educational Library is located in Bonners Ferry Idaho. This project was a group project that I worked on with students in other disciplines such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Construction Management. The project was through RCDI and is ongoing. My group was tasked to design a completely new building. We wanted to design a casual structure that fit within the natural environment of Idaho. The community needed a technology, wet, and fabrication lab. The building does not simply host the library but actually includes the extension office for University of Idaho as well as classrooms for North Idaho College.

As a team, we wanted to design and create a space that reflected the wants and needs of the Bonners Ferry community. The new structure of the building would include three floors featuring the community’s new Fabrication Lab, Makerspace, University of Idaho Business Extension, NIC, and enlarged library. The goal of the new space was to create an open floor plan in which individuals could move from space to space, freely exploring new educational opportunities while continuing their own. The site was designed with the intention of being one large “shared space” (Third Place) where learning, community collaboration, and creativity take place.

ENTRY

The front entry was designed to be an open and welcoming space. The circulation desk is placed in the middle with stairs to either side and the coffee bar is immediately to the left for convenience. The two staircases bring the form of the building inside of the two wings. Above the circulation desk would hang a piece of art that is designed to reach the third level of the building, made of 2x4 timbers and iron to reflect on the towns history.

Tekoa Washington Little Free Library

Little Free Library is an International organization with the goal of improving the literacy rate across the world. The concept is small but the impact is large. The idea of the Little Free Library is to build a small functional library. Usually stacked on a post in someones front yard with the simple mantra of “Take a book, Leave a book”. The Small town of Tekoa Washington in Whitman County is looking into bringing the Little Free Library into their Community. The Design that I came up for Tekoa’s Little Free Library was to highlight the name of the town and take inspiration from Little Free Library designs of a “box on a post”. I designed it so each letter of the name Tekoa is functional and can be accessed on three different sides. It brings in a fun pattern and design, with a functional connected bench so people can sit and enjoy their books thanks to Free Little Library.
