INTERIOR DESIGN PORTFOLIO

“Hello, I’m Michelle! Please take a look at what design has taught me.”

THE PORTFOLIO Architecture

“Architecture is the ultimate teacher of why the detials matter. Every plan; mechanical, electrical, plumbing, elevations, sections, must come perfectly together. Architectects must tell an extremely complicated story in the simplest manner so it can be interpreted by multiple people.

1.

Commercial

"Commercial design requires a deep knowledge of the kind of work and activites that will take place in the designed area. Before beginning the design, it is essential to research, reasearch, research the intended field of industry. hen it is possible to propose a design concept that will invigorate the people of the space.

2.

Residential

“Residential design is is the exciting oppurtunity to look into anothers life, extract thier needs, and create an environment that will celebrate who they are and leave them inspired. The thing I love most about residential design is how much you get to learn about people.”

3.

Construction Documents

“Construction Documents are essential to any design. Creativity can only be as good as technicality. Spending the time to successfully communicate design ideas through detailed construction documents will be rewarded in the excellence of the final product.”

1,000 SQ. FT. HOUSE

“Simplicity is the most compli

icated design achievement

1,000 square feet may sound like a tiny house, but it resulted in a giant project. This house, titled Woven, caused a design challenge of weaving two floors together. After many test models, I was able to build the final product in foam core. Making this model made me think like an architect. Some questions I came across were: How would the walls relate? How will the plumbing be connected?

How much room will the stairs take up? How can I incorporate my outside space with interior space? After figuring out the architecture side of this project, I could move onto the interiors. Making material, furniture, and finish selections, led me to complete presentation hand renderings of the space for an exhibit. Also included at this exhibit was a full set of construction documents created using AutoCAD.

To begin Commercial Studio, we were challenged to design a medical spa based off of the floor plans and requirements of an existing spa that our professor had previously worked on and finished. After research, the concept for this spa is, "A medical spa realigns segments of the human body back to its center". The sketch above was created to demonstrate this concept. It is abstracted from a thumb print, which is a representation of how natural growth patterns revolve around a central point. [2,280 sq. ft.]

Working as a team is an oppurtunity to put multiple ideas, opinions, and skills together to create an outstanding project. For this project, we were asked to establish a design firm, decide on a corporation, and then create a global headquarters for the company. My role in the team was concept developement, initial space planning, flooring plan, and the break room rendering. Using Revit, I was able to produce the crisp, clean, bright look we wanted our design to convey.

PROJECT: VISITING DESIGNER | DESIGNER: BENJAMIN NOREIGA ORTIZ

Residential Studio was taken over by Benjamin Noriega Ortiz. As a very influential designer in New York City, he has established clients all over the world. He recently just finished a project in Puerto Rico for a young couple and their daughter. To challenge us, he decided to give us this same project to work on. We were asked to create a fresh, forward, contemporary residence for this young family using color, but not too much color. Also, use influence from Russia, Spain, and Puerto Rico because these are the places that make this family unique. [4,718 sq. ft.]

FILLED WITH HAPPINESS

Ramon and Viktoria, the clients, are extremely interested in modern art that brings out positive emotions in a unique way. This painting shows off the color they would like to splash onto their walls. It also reflects the excitement they wish to have in their lifes, and how they want to encourage others.

JOSEPH BRANDT BY RON GORCHOV This piece was selected for the art wall in the living room based off of its use of color and line, which emphasize the exciting mood of Puerto Rico. Ramon and Viktoria wished to have a living room that brought luxury into their home for their guests. The convexing shape of this piece brings attention to the artwall, but suggests that the painting is protruding out onto the rest of the room. This piece is apart of Ron Gorchov’s Collection on Sotheby’s.

Rendering can be done in so many different ways. Each style brings on a different mood and can tell a whole new story. In this rendering exercise, I took the same photo and rendered it two different ways. The first is realistic, and the second is stylized.

As seen, each rendering is entirely unique. After doing this exercise, I realized that it is important to know what kind of message the rendering needs to portray to your client. Once you know that, make the rendering style match the message.
