Life Lessons From A

Dancing Star By: Rita Miller

T

he long winter in Michiana took its toll on many people in a number of ways. It was easy to sit on the couch and feel down about the lack of sunshine and fresh air. It became normal to skip outdoor exercise and have an extra helping of comfort food. People began to become a little stir-crazy! Being stuck inside could lead to less job satisfaction, more time on the internet and less time connecting with loved ones. Many people just lost their good attitudes!

One bright spot in the long months of being stuck inside was a celebrity appearance at a local event by Cheryl Burke, the pro dancing champion of Dancing with the Stars. People had the chance to meet Cheryl and have her autograph her book "Dancing Lessons." She is a tiny little thing! Seeing her on television makes it unbelievable that someone that delicate can perform the dancing feats she accomplishes on a weekly basis. Even more intriguing is the story of her life, which she details in her book. It is a story of hardship and success, well worth reading. What can we learn from her struggles and how can we apply her success to our lives? Cheryl was abused as a child. She suffered low self esteem and became involved in abusive relationships. She felt she was never “good enough” and that she did not deserve success. Through hard work, the dedication of her family and a passion for dance, she became a well known celebrity and a model of success for others to look up to. It is easy to let life events become the starting point for a sour attitude. Granted, the winter of 2014 was a long event, but it does remain a solitary bump in the life of a midwesterner. How can we keep a positive attitude during this time and other times of adversity?

Tips from Cheryl Burke that we can apply to our own lives:

1.

Be Yourself.

2.

Cheryl learned this lesson when she was partnered with Drew Lachey, a former 98 Degrees band member. At that time she was very reluctant to be herself in front of the camera. She was sure she would make a mistake. Once she revealed her true personality, she was amazed that it was so much easier to feel comfortable in uncomfortable situations.

Just Laugh. Cheryl was having a difficult

time with press interviews, worrying again about her weight. Maurice Greene, the track star, helped her lighten up by laughing and joking. A good laugh is certainly good for your health.

Do What you Were Born to Do. After an Emmy nomination, Cheryl figured out that “we need to find the thing that we were born to do; we need to allow ourselves to become the person we were meant to be.” Following your passion gives you an instant boost of positive attitude, doing something you love to do.

Clash

The Style

By: Kathy Friend

When our true style is in conflict with our professional work attire.

Have you ever considered how your work world and your LIFE are so vastly different? For over 70% of us, that means we work full-time and have kids. We spend an average of 10 hours a day, every day, working and attending to tasks. In other words, 10 hours a day not sleeping or being with our family and friends can equal to 70 hours a week! Now, let’s think about what most of us SASSY working women do for a living. What types of clothing we are required to wear for work? For most of us that look is a traditional, professional style. The disconnect is considering what types of clothing we like, that we choose to wear when we are living our lives, looks much different than the attire we wear to work. Consider your “style personality,” the clothing you wear is a direct reflection of who you are; your personality. You feel the most beautiful, confident and the most like your TRUE SELF when you wear a great outfit that reflects who you are. The conflict comes when we spend 70 hours a week (some weeks more) in our career wardrobe that doesn’t look anything like our real “style personality.” As a certified Stylist and Image Consultant, I encourage my clients to see their wardrobes as one complete thing. I don’t believe in creating a “work wardrobe” and a “life wardrobe.” That is a very expensive wardrobe plan to keep up! No More White Blouses and Suits! Perhaps the most un-creative professional look is the navy (or black) suit with a white blouse. Make a stand against the professional look everyone has. NO MORE WHITE BLOUSES! Add color and pattern to the great tailored suit. The blouse you love to wear in the summer with shorts and capris can work with your power suit. Don’t shy away from tucking it in and adding a bold belt (with the skirt, under the jacket). Un-Suit your Suit. Who said you HAVE to wear that jacket with that skirt? Who wrote the fashion law that says “you can only wear a suit as a suit, you shall never wear the pieces separately?” The answer, no one! Mix things up: khaki suit jacket with black suit pants, a leather suit jacket with the pencil skirt from your power suit, make cardigans your new go-to jacket. If your workplace will allow, infuse some denim with your suiting pieces. What could be more office-chic than a smartly tailored denim shirt with a pin stripe suit? Or perhaps your favorite jean jacket with a pair of trousers and silk blouse. Permission to Buy New Shoes. Yes, I am giving you permission to go shoe shopping. Adding some of your “style personality” into your professional wardrobe with shoes (or any accessories) can turn a forgettable drab suit into a memorable ensemble. Think about it; a great pin stripe suit with an amazing pair of bright red stilettos with a silver spiked heel. Not your style? What about that suit with a zebra print kitten heel? Get away from being matchy-matchy with your shoes and your outfits. Try new combinations. Start your “what to wear today” internal conversation with “I will wear these shoes today with…” Tailoring. For many of us, it can be hard to get rid of things in our closets we have invested in. Suits can be at the top of the list. If the style is one that was in vogue years ago, it needs a little revamp. Consider shortening the skirt, take the sleeves off the jacket to ¾, give trousers a new silhouette - a peg leg or add an interesting gathered detail at the back of the jacket. Cocktails at Work? Did I just hear thousands of women all over Michiana yell “yes, PLEASE!” Well, I am not suggesting THAT kind of cocktail, but more of the jewelry variety. Bring your favorite party, evening and cocktail jewelry pieces into your professional wardrobe. Add a sparkly brooch to that boring suit jacket, rhinestone necklace layered with a non-descript chain, a statement cocktail ring as your ‘every-day-right-hand.’

I’m not suggesting you go against corporate norms. The first impression created by a professional and polished image is critical to overall career success. I am, however, suggesting you infuse your REAL Style Personality into your professional life. After all, you spend a lot of time there. You might as well feel your best!  14 April 2014 | SASSY

The Constant

Battle Under The Eyes

By: Bethza Seminario

A

makeup artists' most requested fixing is the disappearance of darkness and puffiness under the eyes. They would love to use their makeup brushes as a magic wand and make them disappear as much as many of you would!

There are tricks that can be done with makeup and can be treated at home, but first, let’s determine what is causing the darkness and puffiness under the eyes and learn how to camouflage them.

Common Factors and Tips: Hereditary: If your mom and/or dad have them, it is most likely you will too.

Toxins: Depending on what you are ingesting from meals and snacks, your

Solution: Use an orange based concealer instead of a yellow or cool based

Solution: Start eating more greens! This is hard but little steps at a time

tone. The warm undertone will cancel out the blue and purple tones of the blood vessels. Seal the deal with powder foundation to avoid creasing.

Environment: Allergens and dry day causes, your sinuses to be inflamed.

In result, puffiness will form around your nose, under your eyes and your top eyelids. around your nose and under your eye area and probably your top lids too.

Solution: Besides taking your allergy pill, run a humidifier through the night which will help keep the dryness from your skin out and hydrated at the same time. Use cold green tea bags or cool cucumber to calm down the irritation. Water Retention: Kidney and thyroid health issues contribute to excess of water retention causing swelling to different areas of your body, and the under eye area is not an exception.

Solution: First of all, you need to consult with your doctor if you suspect

Make yourself strawberry/blueberry/banana smoothies to compliment your breakfasts and add kale or spinach to the smoothies. You will not taste the kale or spinach at all. This will spark up your most important meal of the day and will do wonders overall.

Aging: We cannot stop nature’s way of telling us we are getting old. Fines lines, wrinkles, firmness and hydration loss will start creating sagginess around the eye area and therefore create shadows and sometimes puffiness.

Solution: Consult with your esthetician about eye focused-area treatments to be added to your monthly facials. Also, start using eye creams for morning and night which contain hyaluronic acid or retinoic acid that will specifically treat all of the aging concerns. Vitamin A in your skin care products is very important to target this as well.

Make sure you are removing your eye makeup thoroughly before going to bed. Irritation may be caused when you sleep with your makeup on creating swelling and fine lines. If none of the above tips seem to be doing any changes or you are feeling very uncomfortable with the look of under eye bags and circles, consult with your doctor about eyelid surgery or laser treatments to see if that is what your next step should be. Play with your eyes, add an extra coat of mascara to your lashes, groom your eyebrows to bring them out and worry less about the situation under your eyes

Best Spring White Wines For

By: Elizabeth Carris

T

he snow has melted, the sun is shining and the flowers of spring are popping up from the ground. Our moods will improve and our bodies will be ready to move and enjoy the loveliness of spring. This is the perfect time to take inventory of your white wines. Spring and summer are usually when the avid wine drinker switches from the big bold Cabernets and earthy, spicy Malbecs to crisp Sauvignon Blancs and buttery Chardonnays. But anyone can drink white wines; you just have to find your personal preference. And believe me, all wines can be enjoyed all year long from sweet whites to deep reds, it’s all in your love of wine.

Some of the most popular varietals are the oaky, buttery Chardonnays, the crisp, melony Sauvignon Blancs, the smooth and fruity Rieslings and the always festive Moscato d’Asti.

Chardonnay

has been one of the most successful white wines for the last few decades due to its appealing big flavors of vanilla, butter, green apple and butterscotch. It also has equally powerful creamy, lush full-bodied textures to match its amazing flavors. In much of the world, and almost always in the United States, Chardonnay is both fermented and aged in oak barrels. This is significant because that is what gives Chardonnay its rich notes and helps it to develop that creamier body and long finish that chardonnay is so popular for. A Chardonnay pairs well with chicken dishes or pasta’s with light sauces.

Sauvignon Blanc is the polar opposite of Chardonnay. Where Chardonnay is all buttery, Sauvignon Blanc is herbal, crisp, light and refreshing. The name Sauvignon comes from the French sauvage, meaning wild. It’s fitting because if the vines were left with no care, they would grow with wild abandonment for certain. And that fits this wine’s taste. It’s untamed with green herbs, lemon grass, grapefruit and even a mineral taste like gunflint. Some Sauvignon Blanc is oaked and some isn’t. Also Sauvignon Blanc may not always be 100% Sauvignon Blanc, often times it is blended with Semillon, another grape to mellow the Sauvignon Blanc’s tartness and add a honeyed character. Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect food wine. It pairs well with starters, lighter fair and anything spicy due to its acidity. Try it with spicy spring rolls or sushi.

16 April 2014 | SASSY

Rieslings are quite popular due to their refined structure and their light bodied delicate flavors of ripe peaches, apricots and melons with mineral notes, like water run over stones in a fresh water river. A really good Riesling can be enjoyed any time of the day, morning noon or night. Rieslings can be temperamental so it’s not grown in warm climates and even in a cool climate its character can vary a lot. It’s best grown in cooler to cold climates. This wine is typically considered a “sweet” wine. It would pair well with chicken, fish and pork dishes.

Moscato d'Asti is known for it's fun and

festive sparkler wine. It’s a delicate sweet fruity sparkling wine. It’s less effervescent as a Spumante so it’s stopped with a normal cork. No need for a Champagne cork and a wire. It can be opened with a wine opener like a normal wine because it has less pressure but it still has the fizz and festivity of a full on sparkling wine. It is generally made in tiny batches and is a fragile wine so it’s best enjoyed soon after it’s bottled. Moscato d'Asti is a tradition on Christmas to drink it in Peidmont, Italy where it’s typically grown. It really is best enjoyed by itself but it pairs well with desserts due to its sweetness and the bubbles.

Even if you have to put on a jacket or a light coat, white wines are the preview to spring and summer. They are best enjoyed chilled and with friends and family outside on the patio, deck or front porch or where ever it can be sipped in the company of nature’s warmth. Cheers! 

Melissa started her career in commercials at the age of four and soon became a well-known face on the commercial circuit. Moving on to Broadway shows and then sitcoms, Melissa may be best known for "Clarissa Explains It All." She landed the title role of Clarissa at the age of 15 and never looked back. "Melissa Explains It All: Tales from My Abnormally Normal Life" is not just about a child star. Melissa is also a hardworking business woman who has her own production company as well as raising three boys. This book is a really a story of hard work and perseverance paying off.

Moving Forward With

Bachman: Sassy’s Cover Girl Cancer Warrior

In September of 2013, we were honored to bring you the courageous story of Heather Bachman, a mother of two who battled an aggressive form of breast cancer called Triple-Negative. Heather opted for a double mastectomy and underwent chemotherapy. She credits her mother, whom battled breast cancer herself and later passed away from a difference cause, for being the guardian angel that helped her detect the cancer early enough for treatment. We followed Heather on her journey to recovery for the past six months in SASSY. If you missed her story in our 2013 September issue, please visit www. MichianaSassy.com to read it.

I

t's amazing how life can shake you up, spit you out and just keep on moving. For Heather Bachman, that is exactly what life had done to her. Six months ago we sat down with Heather and talked about her struggles on finding herself and moving forward with her life. Through the past several months we watched Heather gain her strength back. Her laugh is bolder, her outlook on life is brighter, and her sense of freedom is being restored one day at a time.

A New Look

Throughout the course of time that we have known Heather, she has gone through several reconstructive surgeries on her breasts. The most recent was in March where she had one of her nipples replaced and fat graphs added to her breasts. “They did the fat graphs to help hide where the implants are,” Heather said. “The reason they decided to hold off on the nipple replacement last time was because the incision wouldn’t close properly. They wanted it to heal correctly.” MODEL: Heather Bachman Photography: CLASSIC IMAGE Photography Stylist: Maria Gonzalez CLOTHING: WHITE HOUSE BLACK MARKET

After several weeks of recovering from her current surgery, she surprisingly did not experience any problems. “They actually look amazing and it looks pretty darn good,” she

said. “I only have one little scar on each side of my breast that the doctors kept reopening if anything needed to be done. I’m amazed at how well they look now.” Heather now has curly hair! “My hair is so curly now. I don’t know if I’m going to keep it short or not but I think for right now I’m going to let it grow,” Heather said brightly. “My hair grew back a lot darker and I just got it highlighted because I couldn’t take it any longer. I just can’t get over the curls because I always had straight hair.” We think her curls are fabulous!

The Next Step

Heather hopes she is done with her reconstructive surgeries. “I will find out soon if I am done but I have a feeling that I am,” she said. “After I am cleared, I will have one year check-ups, which does make me nervous.” Since Heather’s cancer was a Triple Negative, there is always that chance that the cancer can come back. "The first year in a half of being considered 'cured' is rather nerve wrecking because you just never know," she said. Basney BMW 52203 Indiana State Route 933 in South Bend.

Acknowledging that check-ups will become a part of her life from here on out doesn’t keep Heather feeling blue. “I feel so relieved that the surgeries could finally be done,” she said. “It’s nice to not have to plan your life around recovery and surgery time. I’m so thankful that my work has been so great. A lot of women lose their jobs for missing so much work.” But what’s really important to Heather is finally having her life back and slowly begin to feel normal.”I’m ready to put it behind me,” she said. “I’m ready to move on to the next chapter, whatever that may be.”

Starting Over Fresh

Being considered a cancer patient is a thing in the past for Heather and moving forward is where she is heading. “I don’t think I can ever get (my life) back to the way it was before,” she said. “I look at things completely different now.” When something that traumatic happens to one’s life, it’s understandable how they could feel this way. “The other day I was at my daughter’s music recital for school. Most parents watch it and ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed,’” Heather recalled. “But I just sat there and cried because I kept thinking about how I am able to see her sing once again.” Every day, each one of us takes for granted the simplest joys of life. Life seems to take a hold of us and never slow down. What we can learn from Heather’s journey is to take time and literally smell the flowers, smile at a stranger or live in the moment because ultimately life can change in a matter of seconds. 

The Welcoming Bridge

By: Margo Bell

Converting an Eyesore to Eye Candy The Challenge: Turning an old, ugly overpass on Highway 933 between Notre Dame and Downtown South Bend into a welcoming display of art. The Solution: Bring the problem to Christopher Stackowicz of Stackowicz Studios in Granger. Chris was the man for the job. Originally from the north

side of Chicago, he is a Penn High School graduate and holds four university degrees: a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking and painting and one in art history focusing on ancient art from the University of Notre Dame, followed by an MFA in installation art (large public art) and a graduate certificate (an MFA without thesis) in cultural studies from Stony Brook University New York (SUNY ) University in Queens, New York. Chris also spent a summer in Greece doing field documentation by photographing ancient buildings and has also chaired the art department for eight years at Bethel College. His projects included a giant chessboard, a ceiling fresco at Queen of Peace Catholic Church and a mural at the University Park Mall.

Photography: Stackowicz Studios

The approach was to present a colorful, playful entrance/exit to and from the city rather than a straight-line corporate image. It was to convey a vast departure from the “ugh-I-have-to-go-downtown” or “thank-goodness-I’m leaving-downtown” image that the rusted, cracked structure psychologically presented. Everything was to be hand painted and no stenciling was to be used for lettering. One of the first things Chris had to do was form a corporation because of liabilities, insurances, permissions and requirements needed for the project, so cstackstudios, LLC, was born. The full-time staff consists only of Chris and his wife, artist Samantha Stackowicz, who also worked on the bridge project. “I never thought I would be a business owner,” Chris says. Artists are hired according to the project and are located through a database and artists’ organizations. Chris came up with the design himself, pointing out that nearly all the images, such as the columns, are actual locatable features of the city. An exception is the comet high up on the corner of the east side. Chuck Bueter, president of the Michiana Astronomical Society, perched on the crane to direct Chris how to paint the image. Another addition to the plan was extra flowers on pinwheels as part of the Memorial Children’s Hospital contribution. “We taught young kids how to paint them,” Chris recalls, “and they had a lot of fun.”

Big Projects Present Problems

Getting Started

“I was approached in April 2013 by a gentleman from Union Station Technologies who had been working with Memorial Hospital and other business leaders for projects that can beautify South Bend and rally its citizens into re-creating the city,” Chris recalls. “The 933 bridge was seen as significant as to how bad the city was.” Indeed, it was bad. The bridge, a railroad overpass that hadn’t been used by trains in years, was rusty, covered in poison ivy and supported a sign advertising the now-defunct South Bend Football Hall of Fame. The overpass is now part of the bike/pedestrian path that connects Niles to Mishawaka. “Except for the poison ivy, it’s pretty there,” Chris jokes. 20 April 2014 | SASSY

The first obstacle was getting rid of the poison ivy, which attacked all the volunteers on this part of the project. Research on the 87-year-old concrete also was done, but “we could do only so much with it,” Chris recalls. “The concrete is in pretty bad shape.” Priming began on June 4th of last year with cracks filled in and walls painted white. Everything—paint, brushes, scaffolding and so forth—was donated. Chris and his staff of volunteers especially appreciated the crane and the scissor lift. “If we needed something, we contacted vendors,” he says. Memorial Hospital, just south of the bridge, was a major contributor and Chris and Samantha also put in some of their own money. The City of South Bend allowed them to be on its insurance plan, which they didn’t need. There were no injuries during the threemonth, ten-day project. The biggest challenge was the day-to-day logistics. Chris had to plan every single day: what part of the mural was to be painted, coordinate with the volunteers

(some just simply showed up), packing up the paint, taking two hours each day to clean the brushes. As there were 963 volunteers from 11 different schools, Realtors, Goodwill Industries, the Kroc Center, the Homeless Shelter and those from businesses such as Home Depot and Whole Foods—just to name some— it’s easy to see how difficult this was. Adding to the coordination effort was getting consistency among nine professional artists of different skill levels who were used to their own methods of creating.

Fabulous Selection of

Clothing, Scarves, Accessories and Jewelry

Then Chris had to deal with lane closures, which occurred on July 15th and were set by the city. On Notre Dame home game weekends all lanes had to be open to accommodate traffic, which meant taking down scaffolding, storing equipment on Wednesdays before the game, closing up the project for four days. These closures, along with 22 rain days, delayed completion from sometime in October to November 6th.

PERFECT GIFTS for your special occasion

Also there was noise from the traffic going through the underpass, deafening enough to often require earplugs. Artists working next to each other could talk, those farther away text messaged. Auto fumes? “We couldn’t control that,” Chris admits. Graffiti added another problem, which was painted over. A special sealant keeps out the graffiti. A small portion of the wall showcases signatures of the artists. The mural was signed off on November 6th, with Mayor Pete Buttigieg cutting the ribbon on November 9. Yet another challenge popped up: salt. Calcification of the old bridge had salt oozing from under the surface, breaking the paint. “We weren’t expecting this,” Chris laments. “We put a sealant on this and used a special exterior paint for masonry.” He expects the mural, called the 933 Bridge, will last 20 years but he hopes for 30. The response for the 933 Bridge was, Chris figures, 98 percent positive with many “warm and fuzzy” comments.

What’s Next

The studio took part in the South Bend's Spring Forward beautification program in March. Based on a similar program in Cincinnati, the project aims to stabilize sources of light within a number of neighborhoods throughout the city, involving privately owned houses that can’t yet be rehabilitated or torn down. Presently these houses are secured by plywood and look awful. “There are hundreds of these buildings,” Samantha observes. Until these houses can be finally dealt with, the effort is to install primed and painted plywood on the exteriors of these homes. Artists create faux windows, doors and interior scenes with paint to project a colorful, upbeat image with the intention of dropping incidences of graffiti and crime, and encouraging improved business and investment. Again, Spring Forward will involve sponsors, professional artists and volunteers.  For more information, visit www.facebook.com/springforwardsb. Into Shape Workout

This workout is 30 minutes long and can be done in the comfort of your own home. You will need a set of three to five pound handweights (use soup cans if you don't have any) and a positive attitude! Attached is a playlist designed to compliment the workout.

1.Ten Minute Cardio Segment of Your Choice.

The first three songs are meant to compliment a cardio segment of your choice. So put these songs on your listening device and pick one, or more, of the following activities; free dancing, a walk or jog outside, jumping jacks, jump rope, pick a hill near your home and walk/run to the top and back again until the songs are over. Use the music to inspire you to move into a sweat!

2.Three Sets of 10: Tricep-Lunge Kickbacks (On Each Side).

Rest for 10 seconds between sets. To modify for beginners, do not use the weights and bring back knee down to the floor. Instructions: Begin with right foot forward, bent at knee. Back leg is long and straight with heel lifted. Bend elbows to begin and then straighten to complete one rep. Do five sets of 10 with a 10 second rest in between and then switch legs.

A Phoenix from the Ashes

By: Andrew Skipper

I

first met Toma Clark Haines in Chicago while she was on a United States press tour in November of last year. I attended a seminar about sourcing antiques internationally and she was one of the panelists. That evening a friend of mine and I invited Toma to join us at RL for cocktails and we had a wonderful time filled with laughter and “getting to know you” stories. Little did I know, about three months later I would be traveling across the globe to work for Toma as a Creative Consultant for her company, The Antiques Diva® & Co. She owns and operates Europe’s largest antique touring and sourcing company. Working with a team of locally-based agents, she offers custom antiques buying tours in 10 countries to both tourists (mere shopping mortals) and the trade (antique dealers and interior designers).

"If she doesn't fit the model of a SASSY woman, I don't know who else does!" When this stylemaker is not on a buying tour, Toma is also a freelance traveler and design writer, an international public speaker, an interior decorator and social media guru. If she doesn’t fit the model of a SASSY woman, I don’t know who else does! Upon my arrival to Germany, I was invited to join Toma and her husband for dinner at their flat. I am always interested to see how people live at home, particularly successful people. I think your home says a lot about you including what standards you hold, what your tastes are, if your life is balanced. In fact, one of Toma’s philosophies for her business is that your home should tell a story. She has been quoted saying, “I believe one should walk into your home and know who you are, where you have been and where you’re going. Your home should reflect you and your interests.” Through her antiques sourcing 24 April 2014 | SASSY

tours, her goal is for the client to come away with those classic, sometimes quirky, old world, one-ofa-kind pieces that will serve as a backdrop to their daily life. I was also intrigued because of what’s happened in Toma’s life in the last year and a half. On Thanksgiving of 2012 her apartment building caught fire when her downstairs neighbor left a candle burning overnight and she lost nearly everything she owned, including her home. This tragic incident would leave many people down and out, but in true diva fashion, Toma rose to the occasion like a Phoenix from the ashes. Deciding that she couldn’t recreate what she had before, Toma chose to embrace something new. After spending four months in temporary furnished housing, she and her husband fell in love with an apartment in Berlin’s Old Malthouse, an urban renewal project that had taken the Schultheiss Brewery and converted the industrial historic monument into sensational living spaces. She was used to decorating traditional spaces such as her previous apartment which was a historically listed property, but as she says, “The only way for me to not lament what I lost was to start over with something so radically different than what I had before so there was no comparison.” This new place would be a bit different. With soaring ceilings, an open layout and exposed brick walls, Toma was presented with the challenge of outfitting the three floor flat to suit her traditional tastes but also to be at harmony with the nonconventional architecture. Although the loss was significant (many pieces were one of a kind antiques), she utilized her contacts in the industry and set to work on rebuilding a home. One year after the fire, she and her husband hosted a cocktail party in their new home. In diva style, a sense of humor prevailed and the theme of the party revolved around fire. From direct correlations, such as a playlist filled with songs including “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and “Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love,” to more discreet innuendoes like serving “smoked” salmon and flambé baked Alaska. And it just so happened to work out that their dining room is actually the former roasting oven and chimney of the old malthouse (but it’s shaped like an igloo oddly enough). Suffice it to say that the Phoenix has officially risen!

After touring her lovely home and hearing the stories behind each item that she hand selected, I am inspired to think that any of us can start over…at any time. I am encouraged to actually live with gorgeous antiques (her guests are welcome to sit on chairs that are from the 18th century).

And I am reminded that all of us will have setbacks and we will fall at some point, but what matters is that we get rigth back up. It also matters in how we get back up; and creating a home is a constant journey, not a onetime destination. 

The

Benefits

of Being an

Early Riser By: Dylan Lemert

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” – Benjamin Franklin

I’ll start with a confession: I’m not a morning person by default. Not by a long shot. If I had the choice, I’d be up well past midnight every night of the week. I, like many people, tend to feel more creative and productive at night, after the neighborhood has gone to bed and the after-hours quietness sets in. Unfortunately, life as a night owl simply isn’t feasible for most of us, myself included. My own penchant for late nights has contrasted significantly with the requirement that I be up and ready to go shortly after the break of dawn. So recently, I’ve been experimenting with trying to wake up earlier. And alas, it turns out there are a myriad of benefits that come with being an early riser. By dishing out some willpower and tweaking my sleep schedule a bit, I’ve learned it’s entirely possible to fall in love with the morning hours, and to soak in the unique pleasures that stem from being awake with the sunrise.

A Valuable Head Start

Since working on becoming an early riser, I’ve actually discovered the converse to be true. It turns out that early mornings are the perfect, quiet getaway from the hassles of daytime, as well as an opportunity to get a head start on the day’s activities. Some of the most productive and useful moments of one’s entire day can happen during those first few precious hours of morning quiet. Personally, I often use this time to catch up on a task I had left hanging from the previous day, or begin etching away at my goals for the day at hand. I’ll also use this opportunity to jot down a to-do list or respond to emails. Whatever I find myself doing, I’m normally amazed by how much I’m able to accomplish before even sitting down to eat breakfast.

Get Active

One surefire way to get acclimated to being a morning person is by engaging in physical activity immediately after waking. Now, I’m well aware the reason many of us don’t exercise daily is because we simply can’t find the time to do so. Whether or not that’s a truly valid excuse on our part, not getting the proper amount of exercise each day can definitely take its toll. This is where mornings come to the rescue. Simply by waking up 30 minutes earlier than you normally would, you’ve already carved out enough time for a quick workout at home before you head to the office. Problem solved. 26 April 2014 | SASSY

Still need another reason for squeezing in an earlymorning workout? The endorphins and adrenaline released by exercise is a healthy, caffeine-free form of energy. Sure, early exercise will require some discipline (and depending on your disposition toward mornings, perhaps a lot of discipline), but it works wonders for jolting your body and brain to life when nothing else can.

This Summer Offer Makes a Splash!

Take a Note from History

It was Benjamin Franklin who once said, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” I wouldn’t go so far as to call that a guarantee, but I do believe there’s a sliver of correlation between being a morning person and finding personal success. This could be because most folks who are early risers are already motivated people in the first place. However, I’m more inclined to believe it’s because waking early prompts one to understand the real value of time. While it’s an incredibly simple premise, I believe Franklin was referring to, his quote speaks some truth nonetheless. Simply put, getting menial things done in the morning creates time later in the day to focus on the more enriching parts of life, like our relationships. So take advantage of the dawn. It will leave you more time to play, later.

“It turns out that early mornings are the perfect, quiet getaway from the hassles of daytime, as well as an opportunity to get a head start on the day’s activities.” The Quiet Beauty of the Morning

Hands down, my favorite part of the early morning is the inherent beauty that comes with it. On those particular mornings where it’s warm enough to venture outside, I often find myself walking down to the river to catch a view of the sunrise. This is an opportune time for reflection, meditation and mental clarity. I highly recommend getting away every once in a while to a natural, secluded place just as the sun is coming up. The combination of daybreak’s sights, sounds and smells are mysteriously invigorating, and will likely leave you feeling more ready than ever to tackle the day. I’ve found that bringing a notebook to sketch or write about what you observe can help deepen the morning experience. If there’s an overarching lesson I’ve learned during my experiments with waking up earlier, it’s that there’s a wealth of amazing opportunities one could miss simply by choosing to stay in bed an extra hour or two. Becoming an early riser, if you’re not one already, is undoubtedly going to take a bit of discipline. But I believe it’s a practice well worth the effort. And who knows--by sticking with it, you may eventually come to find yourself a morning person after all. 

It's something I'd like to consider more but they want immediate action or they'll take the opportunity somewhere else. How do I communicate how I feel but not lose the business?

Charrise Says:

Expansion is actually what keeps us out of status quo, and definitely out of our comfort zone. It's always a good thing. Nobody can force you to do something you don't want to do, though just by posing the question you are likely moving toward expansion. True business partners will honor the word “partner,” by behaving in a collaborative way rather than a dictatorial way. Is the pressure really coming from them, or are you actually taking it on yourself? If it’s coming from them, then you may not have a true partnership.

28 April 2014 | SASSY

Also, you may want to learn more about the purpose behind their desire for you to restructure and expand. Whose best interest would that serve? Is there a way for everyone’s best interests to be satisfied? Who would you have to be to have a real conversation about the motives behind the request? There’s nothing like a direct conversation to move a situation from fuzzy to clear. And in doing so, you may learn something that changes everything. Sometimes people don’t have the conversation because they are worried it will change everything. Is that true for you? Your fear of them taking the opportunity elsewhere is pointing you in a direction. Fear can be a useful emotion if you see it that way. Are you feeling less confident about your role as a partner? That is worthy of exploring, because if it’s true it will show up all over the place. Have you asked yourself what you really want? And lastly, they may or may not look outside of your partnership for something that moves the business forward. Wouldn’t that serve you as well?

Q:

I spoke with my boss about shifting my role to suit my skill sets so that I'm more challenged, but also of better service. They were receptive and willing during the meeting, but that was months ago and the changes that needed to happen in the business haven't happened. My role has stayed the same. I don't want to leave the team, but I know I'll be miserable if a shift doesn't happen soon. Should I just go?

Charrise Says:

Commitment is a funny animal. If I want to know what I’m committed to, I simply look at my life as a reflection of my true commitments. It’s always apparent in the action I’m taking. Your boss was apparently not committed to taking the steps you assumed needed taken to move you into your new role. Some people make commitments through conversation, without really thinking the situation through. Your boss may have wanted to appease you, rather than follow through on the promise. The only way to know if the promise was real is to ask your boss if there is still a commitment, and to have one of the clearest conversations you’ve ever had with him/her about the next steps. Here are some great questions to get answers to: 1. Do you still intend for me to step into this new role we discussed? 2. When is the latest date you see me in this role? 3. What can I do to expedite this? 4. Do you have any reservations about my moving into this role and if so what are they? 5. What has gotten in the way of me moving into this new role before now? 6. What skill set do you see in me that would guarantee that this new role is right for me? 7. Are you making a promise to me that I can count on? After these questions are answered, you will have a clear choice to stay or go, and you’ll feel fully informed to make that choice.  SASSY | April 2014

assy Magazine and the Renaissance Executive Forums are pleased to bring you The Sassy Executive Forum. Each month we will have a featured business question that will be answered by female executives to help guide you in your own business endeavors.

This article is provided by Executive Forums which helps executives achieve their goals and reduce risk by providing input from a confidential team of their peers and tools from thought leaders. For information, contact them at 574.243.0175 or visit their website: www.ExecutiveForums.com.

This Month's Question: “I’m starting a new job where a number of my employees will be considerably older than me and I’m worried that they won’t respect me as their manager. How can I ensure that I start off on the right foot?”

Congratulations! You’ve been hired for your experience and

skills and you'll be a trusted member of the management team. Take time to get to know all of those who you will be working with. You'll need to know all that you can about your new workplace and you may be surprised what you can learn if you really listen to your new staff. Make sure you give yourself time to gain the respect of your new employees; this won't happen overnight. Go slowly, reflect and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Job shadowing takes time but it's a good way to get to know your employees and how their positions support one another. Spending time listening and sharing will help build trust. This last one seems obvious, but don't forget to present yourself in a professional manner. First impressions are important and until you really know your new workplace-culture it’s probably better to lean towards the conservative side of your wardrobe and demeanor. The first few weeks will be a whirlwind but just remember to try to slow down and build relationships. Good luck!

I

am 4th generation in a family business and completely understand gaining the respect of those who are older in a managerial position. Some of the employees that I manage literally bought Girl Scout cookies from me and watched me go through all of the awkward stages of growing up. What has worked for me is to first, be confident but not cocky. There is nothing worse than an arrogant co-worker, especially if that person is your manager and much younger than you. While you may have degrees and titles that follow your name, the employees you are managing have that in experience. These people have likely been around the business or your industry a long time and can be a rich resource on your team. Be open to suggestions from their years of experience. I have found that the ones I work with are actually eager to teach and find joy in being helpful. There is tremendous value in sincerely getting to know your employees both personally and professionally. No matter the age, people like to feel respected and cared for. Don’t make any assumptions that you have nothing in common because there are years between you. Engage with them as individuals, not just employees. 

Last Month's Question: “I am approaching mid life and am more conservative about protecting my accumulated assets. I am looking for criteria to select investment opportunities without risking my accumulated wealth. I do not want to ignore great ideas to grow.” Due to last month's Executive Forum question being incorrect, SASSY Magazine is reprinting the correct question to accompany the local executive's answers.

T

he question at hand addresses financial decisions at mid-life. But when is that? With people marrying later and having children later, it isn’t a particular age; it is a stage of life. I divide the stages of life into four parts. 1. Living at home with parents. 2. Living on your own with a mate and perhaps children. 3. Children have left the nest and you are still working. 4. Finally retired and hopefully enjoying the good life. Thus my comments assume the children are leaving.

Before one takes off and chases investment opportunities, one needs to assess their financial position. The first step would be to prepare a personal balance sheet. List all your assets – cash, investments, retirement plans, real estate etc. and then your liabilities – mortgages, vehicle loans, student loans. Assess your net equity position (assets minus liabilities); this is your net worth. This is your financial foundation. If this number is low, then you first need to retire some debt, not risk your assets in investment opportunities. Secondly, one should prepare a source and use of funds. Where does your income come from – salaries, investments etc. and more importantly where does it go – mortgage payments, living expenses, discretionary spending etc. I divide the spending into four categories – necessary, nice but not necessary, totally discretionary and saving. The first test, is anything in the saving category? If not, you need to start here and determine how much of your income you need to save in order to meet your goal. The second test is, are you spending more than you are making and where is it going. If it is in the necessary category –utilities, rent and food, you are in trouble. If it is in the discretionary category such as a vacation, it is a suggestion to rethink how you vacation and is there a more economical way to go. This exercise is usually quite revealing as to whether you r financial house is in order or not. The third test is, have you determined your financial goals for retirement and are you on a realistic path to achieving them. Are you regularly saving money? Are you retiring your debt and not acquiring any new debt? Are you maximizing your retirement plans? These are basic steps to achieve financial freedom. Once you have set your financial house and path in order, then it is appropriate to look for more risky investments. Your ultimate goal should be to have a net worth and a net income that will sustain you through your retirement years. This requires some realistic calculations, planning and personal discipline to achieve it.

n realizing that investing involves some level of risk - the higher the earned rate of return on the investment typically requires higher risk – you can establish your own determination of what is “acceptable risk.” Also, knowing the value of your investment will fluctuate over time, which means you may gain or lose money on any given day but that is the nature of the markets. Investing for retirement is usually a long-term plan that changes as the retirement time-horizon gets closer, typically shifting to more conservative investments to help insure your retirement goals stay intact. The trigger words here are 'mid-life', 'conservative' and 'protecting accumulated assets.’ My investment style aligns with these trivgger words even without being mid-life. Why? Because, that is my comfort level. I am not an advocate of riding the waves of big gains and big losses, even if my time horizon is over 20 years. I cringe hearing of other’s investment wins and losses, especially hearing of my peer's investment portfolios crashing during 2008 and 2009 when they plan to retire in 2013 or 2014. As for investment criteria, I lean more toward a few fundamental practices to prepare for retirement, some of which may not be of popular vote. First and foremost, always live well within your financial means. Second, nearing retirement needs to equate to freedom from financial obligations, meaning eliminating all debts; home mortgage, auto loans, credit cards and setting aside funds for expenditures such as vacations and large purchases. Another fundamental upon retiring is to develop various additional forms of income streams, such as finding part-time employment. This will enhance your spendable income and give you extra freedom during retirement. The concept here is to keep generating an income versus living solely off of your investment portfolio. The alternative is to truly understand the boundaries of living off a fixed-income, which can be a difficult transition for most. This all takes a different kind of financial mindset for the majority of retirees, unless you are already wired to be very fiscally conservative. Many times I have pondered the fact that people spend more time planning vacations and other events than they spend on getting their financial house in order. A sound retirement requires knowing your financial goals, understanding investment options and knowing how to successfully stay on a budget. Or better stated, preferring to spend your attention on short-term goals and not long-term goals. Why not do both!  SASSY | April 2014 31

I

t is amazing how you can collect junk in the winter months. The holidays seem to double the amount of stuff we have. By the time April arrives, our junk drawer is overflowing and you can’t remember the last time you saw the bottom of the table by the back door. If the clutter itself doesn’t give you a panic attack, the thought of cleaning it up certainly does. Over the years I have discovered a way to make this process a bit easier, and dare I say, even fun. The entire family can participate which helps make the thought of conquering each room a bit more bearable.

Closet Purge

Last year I made this process a little easier by picking up green and red plastic baskets at the dollar store. Throughout the year my boys will throw any undamaged, clothes that are too small, in the green bin, and the clothes that are damaged or that they don’t want anymore in the red bin. Every month I collect the baskets and make a trip to Goodwill. Having baskets makes it easier to decide what is a hand-me-down or a donation.

Junk Patrol

I read an article on Pinterest about collecting 40 trash

bags of unwanted household items in 40 days. I thought I could never find that amount of junk in our house. I was wrong. Not only did I find 40 bags, it didn’t take

40 days. Taking on one room at a time makes the task less daunting. Once the house is free of unwanted junk, you can begin the cleaning process.

Mark Your Calendar

We designate an entire weekend. It also helps family members to not “accidentally plan a golf outing.”

Taking the Stress Out of

Spring Cleaning

Prepare

Make sure you have all the cleaning supplies and tools that you will need before you begin. You don’t want to leave in the middle of cleaning to pick up carpet cleaner. It can be a recipe for distraction. What should be a quick trip turns in to an hour of wondering down the aisles, picking up more items, which defeats the purpose of DE-cluttering. In addition, prepare ready to eat meals, like pizza and casseroles. The last thing you want to do after cleaning all day is make dinner.

Open the Windows

Nothing can be more motivating than the smell of fresh air. Give your furnace a break and invite the first scents of spring to replace the smell of a long winter.

By: Noelle Elliott

Have a Strategy

You are about to deep clean an entire winter’s worth of a house. It is important to work as a team. Work from top to bottom. You can start by cleaning the ceilings. Lights, chandeliers and crown moldings are dust and cobweb magnets. Next, tackle windows. One person will clean the window and the other will follow by cleaning the window treatment. The best way to clean blinds is with a swifter tool specifically designed for blinds. It cuts your time in half. Attack the furniture, especially couches and chairs. They can get very dirty. Remove all covers from the couch cushions and throw them in the delicate cycle in the washer. The arms and bottom of the couch are best cleaned with a steam cleaner. Tables, dressers, hutches and armoires are next. Once they are dusted check for any dings or scratches. A good wood polish can make everything look cleaner. Shampoo carpets and mop the hardwood floors. This is a good time to let the kids take a television break, that way they will not be tempted to step on wet floors.

D

CA R T F I G

Sanitize the bathrooms. This is my least favorite project, however, it usually is the fastest to complete. You should have been cleaning the bathrooms consistently, so this is just a more thorough version of what you normally do. Deep clean the kitchen. This is the time to clean shelves, the microwave, refrigerator, oven and the pantry. Cleaning the kitchen will take up most of your time. If you decide to break your cleaning into separate days, this is best done on a day by itself.

Send Your Pets to the Groomer

Pets contribute to the dirt and hair in the house. While you clean, send them away to the doggie spa. There are several local pet groomers to choose from.

Relax

You are finished! It may have felt like it was never ending, but you did it. A good solid cleaning is a great way to start fresh again. Celebrate by grilling out. Not only will this not mess up your clean kitchen, but will also inspire thoughts of warmer days. Invite a few friends over too; your house may never be this clean until next year. 

PERFORMING ARTS What is the history of your organization?

South Bend Civic Theatre is the oldest continuouslyoperating community theatre company in the South Bend/Mishawaka area. Founded in 1957, it staged most of its productions after 1968 at The Firehouse, a local historic landmark in the city’s Park Avenue neighborhood. Under the leadership of an incredible Board of Directors and then-Executive Director Jim Coppens, SBCT began exploring solutions for the need for more space. In January 2007, the beginning of SBCT’s 50th Anniversary year, Civic celebrated the opening of its new theatre home in what was formerly the Scottish Rite Building. Through generous individual support as well as community and corporate underwriting, SBCT was able to complete construction on a new 3,500 square foot scene shop, renovation of a 209 seat Mainstage Auditorium and a 70 seat versatile blackbox Studio Theatre in a little over a year.

SOUTHOLD DANCE THEATER What is the history of your organization?

914 Lincolnway West • South Bend, IN 46616 574.233.9841 • www.southoldDance.org

Southold Dance Theater (SDT) was founded in 1974 when several dancers came together because they shared an important common bond: their love of dance. Early SDT performances and classes were held at Dancenter, a 100-yearold church converted to dance studios and theater space. SDT remained there until 1981 before relocating to its current home at the Colfax Cultural Arts Center, a cooperative arts and neighborhood complex with national historic site status. Thirty-nine years later, SDT has achieved national recognition as a leading dance institution in the United States and plays a vital role in the Michiana community through its dance performances, training and enrichment. SDT’s ‘Nutcracker’ has become a Michiana holiday tradition and its spring presentations of classical ballets delight audiences of all ages! This season, Southold performances will attract more than 10,000 audience members, train more than 425 children and pre-professional dance students, engage with 12 or more guest artists and instructors from professional dance companies and enrich the lives of more than 5,000 schoolchildren through our school shows and outreach demonstrations. Southold Dance Theater remains dedicated to its mission to make life more enjoyable for people who share the dance experience.

Why are the arts important to our community? Besides being there for entertainment purposes, the performing and visual arts unlock our imaginations and stir us to pause, think and reflect. They remind us of the power to innovate and create, which is essential to our communities and our progress.

What do the arts mean to you?

“Art is a personal expression of one’s being. It’s not something I think about, but rather something I feel. I think Art is an extension of life and self.” ~ Erica Fischbach, SDT Artistic Director

hen Jen Camacho was young, her parents used to take her to the store once a week to get a roll of film developed. “As early as I can remember, I have always been interested in photography,” Jen said. “I remember when I was a small child I would always pretend to be taking pictures of people, objects, whatever I could.” She was always known as the go-to girl to snap pictures at events and gatherings as she was growing up. But, it wasn’t until she became an adult that she considered making her hobby a profession. In November 2011, Jen did just that. She now specializes in custom newborn and family photography and will soon be adding birth photography to the list. Even though she is the mother of four and a full-time paralegal for a local insurance company, she makes time for her growing business and doesn’t find her life hectic at all. “It's full, but I wouldn't say hectic.”

Meghan Esau who photographs families, children, seniors and weddings agrees. “I have always loved art, and one thing I find amazing about photography is its ability to capture a moment and turn it into a memory. I love creating images for families that they will be able to look back on for many years.” Meghan also cares for her two small children full-time but for her it’s still important to make time for photography. “Photography fills me with a unique joy, and I feel it is very important to take time out of my busy schedule to find that joy. I love walking into a client's home and seeing my images on their walls. I love knowing that they enjoy my work as much as I do.”

For Jen, finding the balance is important because photography has amazing awards attached to it. “There have been times where I have laughed or cried (happy tears, of course!) with my clients. I'm making their story come to life. I am preserving their story. What an honor!” Andrea Hartstein can relate. She has been a professional photographer since 2007 and specializes in pregnancy, birth, baby and wedding photography. She has the pleasure of capturing her clients’ momentous occasions. “Life goes by too fast. I think to myself at times that I'd rather really experience our life together in the moment, rather than behind a camera lens. The funny thing to me though, is when I don't have pictures to document our family moments, I don't have as many memories of it later. This is one reason why I love doing what I do,” Andrea said. “I offer something really valuable to my clients,” she went on to say. “They can experience their moment completely in the moment and I capture it so that they can savor it later. I had one bride tell me recently that it’s more emotional to experience the wedding weeks later through my pictures than it was at the actual event. She felt she missed so much on that whirlwind day.”

For all of these women, photography isn’t a job; it’s a passion and a privilege. Art holds a special place in their hearts and though their lives may be hectic, they make time to express themselves through their medium because it’s not work; it’s something more. “My mom used to tell us kids that we'll all need to find a job someday,” Andrea recalled. “She’d tell us that if we could find a job that paid well, wonderful. But if we could find a job we really loved, then we’d never really work a day in our life.” And for these three women, that’s exactly what their art does for them. 

Awake & Alive Hope Gala:

Double the Miracles

A

wake & Alive hosted the second annual Hope Gala, Double the Miracles dinner and auction in early March. The event was catered by Bread and Chocolate on the top floor of the Old Bag Factory in Goshen. The evening rose over $43,000. These proceeds provide education and empowerment for children and their caregivers in one of the most impoverished communities of Ethiopia. The song styling of Julie Obendorf helped set the mood for guests who perused silent auction items of: African themed art, original Ethiopian works, photography, jewelry and ceramics. Darin Shrock, CEO of Awake & Alive, detailed his families harrowing experience of the airline hijacking during their recent trip to Ethiopia. He made the connection between resourced parents here in the United States and the parents in Ethiopia, who have none. Highlights from the night included a live auction, moving video from the school and the sale of a necklace created by the parents of children at the school. The women in the newly established Kechene Empowerment Project made a beautiful, gold necklace from recycled materials including bullet shells, which sold for over $3,000.
