pril usually means Easter, spring break and those pesky showers that bring May flowers. This year, Easter was unusually early, coming in March, but spring break is still in the picture, and so, hopefully is spring itself.
I never put much stock in the tradition of Ground Hog’s Day and the prediction of six more weeks of winter or an early spring depending on whether he sees his shadow. Living in Michiana, it seems like we always have six more weeks of winter, whether he sees his shadow or not. In fact, my first winter in South Bend, the only snow day of the entire school year happened in the middle of April. But, that was obviously an anomaly. This year, with the wonderful warm weather we have been having, I am beginning to believe in the ground hog. The warmer than usual March weather has been wonderful! The snow is gone, the ice on the lakes has melted, the grass is beginning to turn green, the crocuses are blooming and the trees are beginning to bud…I think spring is nearly here and I can’t wait! And, I can’t wait for you to read our April issue of SASSY. You will find articles on Spring Fashion Trends, the Pros and Cons of Botox and 5 Public Speaking Tips for Introverts. There is also a great recipe for Mini Quiche Tarts along with an article on Veganism, plus many more interesting articles. I hope you enjoy our April issue.

Mini Quiche Tarts Recipe & Photo By: Katie & Theresa Slott Time: 20 Minutes Prep + 13-18 Minutes Baking Makes: 48 Servings Ingredients: • 2 Pie Crusts • 2 T. Olive Oil • 1 Medium Onion • 10 oz. Frozen Spinach, Thawed And Squeezed Dry • 3 Eggs • 1 c. Half-And-Half • 1 c. Shredded Italian Cheese Blend • 3 Slices Bacon, Cooked Crisp • 1 t. Pepper • 1/2 t. Salt • 1/2 t. Nutmeg Tips: If you're trying to eat healthier, simply replace the crust with mini silicone baking cups. Once baked, pop the quiche bites out of the silicone cups and enjoy!
Steps: If using homemade pie crust, roll out the dough into a 10" round. For Both Crusts: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. C 2. Spray or grease the wells of the mini muffin pans. Using a 2 1/2" round cookie cutter, cut out 48 rounds, re-rolling scraps as necessary. Place each round in a well of the mini muffin pans. 3. Heat the olive oil in a medium skillet on medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook until lightly browned, 5-6 minutes. Add the spinach and stir. Remove from heat. 4. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and half, cheese, spinach mixture and remaining ingredients. Use a small measuring spoon (1/2 T. worked well) to fill each crust-lined well of the muffin tins. 5. Bake the mini quiche tarts for 13-18 minutes, until the egg is set and the pie crust is lightly browned. Serve.

Organizational Tips By: Andrew Skipper
T
he arrival of spring brings with it a sense of renewal. It’s also the time to get organized at home and do some spring cleaning to bring that fresh feeling inside your home. While cleaning and organizing your livable spaces is important, it’s also a good idea to take a look behind closed doors and drawers. By taking some time once a year to reorganize those hidden spaces, you’ll be able to make sure everything has a specific home and can be tucked away out of sight.
Here are some tips to get you started AND HOW TO MAKE the Organization process easy: Inside the Closet
Inside the Linen Closet
Remember the famous line, “No wire hangers!" from the film Mommie Dearest? Take it one step further and say, “No mismatched hangers!” While purchasing a set of nice matching hangers won’t automatically make your closet organized, it can help motivate you to clean up and clear out. When you’re swapping out hangers, take the opportunity to sort through clothes and get rid of those you haven’t worn in a year. This is also the ideal time to hang clothes in their proper places and color coordinate them!
Assign certain shelves to sheet sets and blankets, and other shelves to bathroom and kitchen towels. Table linens should have their own distinct area as well. Use shelf dividers to keep stacks of linens neatly in place. Having everything in its own spot will save you time and frustration on a weekly basis.
Save the Shoes
Sets Stay Together
Shoes can be expensive, but with proper care and storage, they can last longer than a couple seasons. Opt for shoe racks or clear plastic bins which will save shoes from dust and marks from being piled on the floor of the closet. Another smart option is to purchase a clear under-bed bin where you can store off-season shoes.
Keep sheet sets together by tucking your folded flat and fitted sheets inside the matching pillowcases before placing them in the linen closet. Guest towel sets can be stacked largest to smallest and tied up with a pretty ribbon to keep the closet organized and visually appealing.
Motivate by Matching
Visually Merchandise Whether you have a tiny closet or a spacious walk-in, there are certainly ways to make it more visually appealing. Take cues from your favorite clothing boutique and put like with like, for instance hang all your dresses together, fold all your sweaters and place them on the same shelf and so on. Color coordinating can also have a huge impact. Hang clothes from light to dark or color block your closet. If you have a walk-in closet, consider swapping out the overhead light fixture for a pretty crystal chandelier, and paint the walls of the closet a fun color. 8

Strict Sections
Take Inventory Ratty towels can be cut up for use as cleaning rags or taken to the garage to dry the vehicles on car washing day. When sheets or blankets get threadbare, it’s time for them to go. New sheets are always worth the investment and guest beds should always be made as comfortable as possible.
Inside Dresser Drawers Don’t Overstuff
Easy Access
If you have a hard time cramming your dresser drawers shut, it’s time to edit! Which clothes do you wear on a regular basis? Can you part with a few pieces? The key to staying organized is making sure that things are easy to access and easy to put away. If you constantly have to taake several items of clothing out of a drawer in order to get to another item, then you’re more likely to make a mess and feel frustrated.
When designating drawer space, the rule of thumb is to store items used most often in the highest drawer. Underwear and socks which are worn daily should be kept in higher drawers with pajamas and t-shirts in middle drawers. Save bulky sweaters and seasonal pieces for the bottom drawers.
Divide and Conquer A key component to organization is compartmentalizing. Drawer dividers come in all shapes and sizes and help to keep socks, underwear and jewelry in their rightful place.
Inside the Kitchen Pantry Decanting is Delicious
By decanting dry goods into clear containers, you will be able to see how much of a given food you have left and the pantry will also look fantastic! Cereals and pastas look great behind glass and they also keep better when stored in airtight containers. Teas and grains should also be kept in tightly covered jars to maximize their shelf life.
Try Trays Trays are one of the easiest way to corral disparate items and keep things looking tidy. Collect all your baking supplies onto a single tray and simply pull it out of the pantry when it’s time to bake. Gather bottles of oil and vinegars onto a tray and simply pull the tray out a couple of inches to access whatever item you may need.
Beautiful Baskets Use baskets to keep components of small cooking appliances together. When it’s time to cook, you won’t have to search for pieces for the mixer, salad spinner or juicer. Staying organized really does save you time and energy!
Inside the Medicine Cabinet Cups and Containers
Perfect Pouches
Utilize small cups to help keep things upright such toothbrushes, makeup brushes, tweezers and nail clippers. Small Tupperware® containers can also be used to corral small medicine bottles, hair ties and travel toiletries.
Just as a coin purse keeps loose change from spilling into your hand bag, small makeup pouches are perfect for keeping things organized in the bathroom cabinet. Designate certain pouches to specific tasks such as nail-care or makeup so you can grab them and go.
Let It Go Keep only products that you actually use. Bath products and medicines have expiration dates, so if you haven’t used something by the time it expires, throw it away. If you switch moisturizers, get rid of the old bottle! Chances are there are plenty of half used products taking up valuable storage space in your medicine cabinet. SASSY | APRIL 2016

Spring Fashion
trends
What to Wear…If You Dare
T
his season there are some definite HOT trends in the fashion world; things I am sure you will want to embrace and bring a slice into your wardrobes. Many of today’s trends are carryovers from season’s past, and even years past. If you loved the 70’s, you are in luck! If you prefer a more tailored, polished look, you are also in luck.
The “balance of power” in fashion has us looming on both ends of the spectrum. The overall theme in trends this season is a feeling of opposites. Romantic frills and silhouette with a 70’s vibe balanced against a harsh and edgy feel inspired by 80’s-90’s street fashion.
Here are three of the season’s fashion inspirational trends: Embrace Your Inner Latin Dancer
Influenced from Miami, or a Latin feel, in fashion is definitely prevalent this season. As part of this trend, we see layered ruffle skirts, off the shoulder and midriff baring tops with puffy sleeves and bold Spanish feeling prints. Think flamenco skirt with an open midriff. Specific notions of this trend include: • Prints, bold florals • Puffy Sleeves, sleeves that ARE the statement in the outfit • Slip dresses • Layered ruffles
• Off the shoulder / bare shoulders • A-symmetric hemlines • Pom-pom trim and colorful embroidery and beading – especially in shoes
Key Piece in this Trend: The Slip Dress What to Wear - If you love the idea of this trend, with its bold colors and romantic feel, be sure to pair your favorite pieces with something more structured; specifically the slip dress. By nature, this dress is borrowed from lingerie. Today’s slip dress is a bit more structured, but not much. You don’t want to look like you’ve walked out of the house wearing only your undergarments or nightgown, so pair this dress with the proper foundation garments to keep everything “in check.” Balance this sexy look with a structured jacket or sweater, and keep your footwear light and airy, like the dress. 10
APRIL 2016 | SASSY
Politics in Our Closets
Fashion trends mimic the state of world politics and the economy. Because this is such a politically charged year, it isn’t really that surprising we are seeing that influence in fashion. Power suits are back with button front blouses. Stripes that have a nautical feel and finishing touches that remind us of military hardware. The feel is all-American. Details that fit into the political influence trend include: • • • •
Suiting pieces – the power suit is back Stripes, bold thicker stripes Boxy Jackets Button front shirts
• All over denim (all Americana look) • Patriotic feel in color combinations (lots of red, white and blue) • Chunky, solid heels in footwear
Key Piece in this Trend: Bold Stripes and Boxy Jackets What to Wear - The stripes of today’s trendsetters are bold, thick flag-like stripes. If you are a petite woman, be sure that the thickness of the stripe is in line with your stature. These thick stripes can be easily paired with florals for an up-beat look. Be sure to match intensity and hue of the colors. The boxy jacket when paired over a plunging neckline is a dramatic look that will turn any politico’s head. Be mindful of where the jacket hits on your silhouette so it doesn’t add width to your shape.

It’s the 70’s Moving to 90’s…Again
For several seasons we have seen the influence of the 70’s in the bohemian trend and fringe. Well, it seems it is here to stay and here in a huge way! The political trend feels very structured and planned, while the 70’s bohemian trend feels the exact opposite – unstructured and easy. Lightweight, translucent fabrics, fringe and lace are paired with pieces that feel very 90’s with minimalism, a grunge feel and even fanny packs (yes, I said fanny packs). Pieces that play homage to this trend include: • • • • •
Long earrings Wide leg pants Tie die Cold Shoulder tops Shine, shine and more shine – metallic fabrics and details
• Maxi skirts and dresses • Oversized jackets and track suits • Strappy shoes, gladiator style sandals • Suede, especially in footwear
Key Piece in this Trend: Open Shoulder Top What to Wear- Cold shoulder or open shoulder tops are very sexy and should probably not be brought into the office. Be sure to wear your shoulder-baring top with the proper undergarments, be sure to check your top from the front, side and back. Try a stick on (strapless) bra with snap closure in the middle, and underwire support. Many of the trendy open-shoulder tops have a blouson silhouette. Be sure to balance this shape with a slim pant or skirt, or ½ tuck your blouse to change the silhouette (tuck in the front of your shirt, leave the back untucked). Longer necklaces seem to work best with this style top.
A Final Word on This Season’s Trends…
There is so much cross over in trends this season, fashionistas can bring pieces from last spring/summer and easily transition them into this year’s wardrobes seamlessly. Vintage thrift store finds will fit nicely into current styles, and buying a few key pieces won’t break the bank. When trying out these trends or fully embracing one of them, remember my “stylerule-of-thumb” in determining if a trend is for you; If you put something on and look in the mirror and feel a question coming over your thoughts, the answer is no! Conversely, if you put something on look in the mirror and instantly smile, stand a little taller and say to yourself “oh yea!” the answer is yes!

book review
The Road to Little Dribbling By Bill Bryson Review By: Kimberly Cashman, Reference Supervisor at Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Pulic Library Mishawaka Photo Courtesy: Amazon.com
Bill Bryson is an American writer who has spent most of adult life in Britain. The Road to Little Dribbling: Adventures of An American in Britain is a companion to Notes from a Small Island, published 20 years earlier and describes Bryson’s most recent travels around the country. However, Bryson makes the decision to cover new ground in The Road to Little Dribbling, rather than revisit places he described in Notes from a Small Island. As a result, readers can enjoy this new title independently of the earlier work. One of the reasons that Bryson decided to embark on a new series of travels around Britain is that he is about to become a British citizen. This circumstance also provides a framework for the journey. As Bryson is studying for the British Citizenship test, he discovers that the two furthest removed points on the island that can be connected by a straight line not crossing the sea are Bognor Regis and Cape Wrath. In honor of this discovery, he decides to begin his travels at Bognor Regis, a seaside town on the south coast of Britain that has seen better times, and to end his trip at Cape Wrath, a remote spot on the northern coast of Scotland. In the end, though, he does not follow what he dubs “the Bryson Line,” but visits a wide variety of places on both coasts and everywhere in between, while heading roughly south to north. His stops include prehistoric sites, museums, stately homes, the countryside and forests and pretty but heavily-trafficked seaside towns. He visits famous landmarks like Stonehenge, and lesser-known sites like a cabin in Hyde Park where President Roosevelt often stayed during World War II. These places are not necessarily described in detail, but often in brief “snapshots” that reflect the author’s interest in the site and his experience there. His perspective is serious at points, for example when he explores a city that has fallen on hard times, but is often laugh-out-loud funny.
The Road to Little Dribbling’s descriptions allow the reader to travel virtually around England, Wales and Scotland. It might also provide readers with ideas for off-the-beaten-path places to visit, or lead them to decide to avoid well-known places that may not be worth the time. Anglophiles will really enjoy the interesting stories from British history connected to the sites that Bryson visits, and his discussion of life in contemporary Britain.

Considering
Botox?
First Look At The Pros and Cons By: Allison Boelcke Smith
Botox is among the most mainstream of the cosmetic enhancement procedures and can seem like an ideal solution for those who want to reduce fine lines and wrinkles - unlike traditional facial plastic surgery. Botox is a temporary injection so there isn't the level of commitment or fear of the results not turning out like expected. It works at eliminating crow's feet and frown lines because its active ingredient, the neurotoxin botulinum toxin type A, temporarily prevents the nerve cells from communicating with those muscles at the injection site, which causes them to tighten.
If you're intrigued and considering Botox, keep these pros and cons in mind to determine if it's right for you:
Pros: It Can Make You Look More Refreshed Over time, the constant muscle contractions from making facial expressions can cause lines or wrinkles on our face to be deeper and more pronounced. These lines can cause the face to look angry, sad or tired. If performed subtly, Botox injections smooth out the lines in order to give a more refreshed appearance that doesn't scream "I've had work done!"
14
APRIL 2016 | SASSY
It Doesn’t Require a Significant Time Commitment The procedure itself takes just a few minutes to be injected and requires no downtime or recovery period. You could get it on your lunch hour and go back to work! Unlike other cosmetic procedures where you have to wait for bandages to be removed before you get to enjoy the benefits, Botox usually only takes about seven to 14 days for the full effect to take place.
It May Help Treat Health Conditions Botox has other uses besides cosmetics - it can also help with other chronic health conditions. In 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Botox as a treatment for chronic migraines. Seven injections are administered throughout the head and neck in order to prevent the muscle contractions that contribute to migraine pain for three months. Botox can also be used to treat hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, for up to two years when injected in the underarms.
Cons: It Can Cause a Range of Potential Side Effects Botox is a medical procedure, and as such, it carries some risks that need to be taken into consideration. Some of the most common side effects that occur as a result of Botox include bruising, swelling and pain where it was injected, as well as headache, stomachache or flu-like symptoms. There is also the risk of drooping or puffy eyelids if the Botox injection site is located too close to your eyes.
It is Only Temporary and Requires Regular Maintenance Even if you are thrilled with the results, the effects of Botox are shortlived. Each injection only lasts from three to six months. The consistent maintenance can be time-consuming. Unless you are ready to make a quarterly or biyearly commitment, you will not get to keep experiencing the benefits of Botox. Also, since you have to go through the procedure so often, there is no guarantee you will always have the same outcome, so each time will be a risk.
It Can Be Costly Depending on the physician, geographical location and treatment areas, the price of a Botox treatment can range from $200 up to $1,000 per session. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the nationwide average price for one Botox treatment is $328. And since the effects of Botox are temporary, it could be a hit to your budget to keep it up. Plus, there’s the chance that once you see one cosmetic improvement, you could start noticing other areas that you think could use it - thus, spending even more money.
“Botox is a temporary injection so there isn't the level of commitment or fear of the results not turning out like expected.”
Just because Botox and other fillers are considered safe and effective doesn’t mean that they are necessarily right for you. Taking the time to research the benefits and disadvantages can help ensure you feel confident and safe in whatever decision you make. Always consult with a medical professional to help you make the best personal choice for your physical and mental health, as well as your appearance. SASSY | APRIL 2016

Veganism: “Can I do it?”
W
By: Christina Clark
e all know one, because inevitably they have told us all about the positive effect their lifestyle has had on their overall health, probably repeatedly. A few distinct images come to mind of someone who practices this life dietary change and lifestyle, but have you been considering transitioning your diet as well? “Going vegan” sounds daunting to the uninitiated. Living off of pure plant-fuel can seem tough for many, but many vegans sing the praises of nixing the animal-products from their repertoire. Still hesitant on making the switch? Below are a few simple solutions on how to make a smooth transition from meat-eating to a strictly plant-based diet
“But I Love Cheese!”
“I’ll Never Get Enough Protein”
According to the Genetics Home Reference (ghr.nlm.nih.gov, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine), “Approximately 65% of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy.” What does having a lactose intolerance do to one? “If individuals with lactose intolerance consume lactose-containing dairy products, they may experience abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, nausea and diarrhea beginning 30 minutes to two hours later.” Yes, skipping the cheese may have some more… comfortable…benefits later on in the day for a large portion of adults. A lactose-intolerance being inflammatory to the body’s systems, it also can trigger skin issues like increased acne breakouts. While it isn’t a guarantee, it can be a contributing factor to a clearer complexion. Giving it up might be hard at first, but cutting down on general discomfort is a big reason that many, forgive me: cut the cheese.
If lentils and beans don’t particularly spark interest immediately (though lentils can pack an 18 gram protein punch per cup), consider that tempeh and tofu are the near-equivalent to chicken in the way that they pick up the flavor of whatever you cook them with. Tempeh is made through a fermenting process of cooked soybeans, where tofu is made through a process of curdling fresh soy milk. Tempeh is more condensed, and less processed, where tofu is spongier and more blendable. There are plenty of recipes that incorporate tofu and tempeh in a way that even some of the pickiest eaters may enjoy.
Cheese is such a staple in the Midwestern diet--and while many can cope with losing a burger or a steak—losing Cheddar and Gouda seems like it adds insult to injury to cutting former staples from their diet. Losing cheese from pizza? Anarchy! Consider the following, however:

Protein is abundant in a vegan diet, though it doesn’t look the same as an omnivore-diet. “Because animal-based foods are high in protein, it’s a common misconception that vegans don’t get enough of it. In fact, the real problem is non-vegans getting too much protein. Vegans can get all of the protein they need from lentils, tempeh, tofu, beans, nuts, seeds and even vegetables,” states The Vegan Starter Kit website (vegankit.com).
There are alternatives in protein powders as well! Pea and hemp proteins are just two alternatives that contain quite a high amount of protein per serving, so even fitness fanatics need not fear of missing out on a nutritional staple.
“I Can’t Live Without My Coffee”
Coffee can absolutely stay on a vegan diet! It’s the dairy-portion that must be altered. Luckily, Starbucks and a majority of local and national coffee houses have come aboard to accommodate those limiting dairy in their diets, offering soymilk and sometimes even coconut milk as rich and creamy alternatives in your daily pick-meup. Even requesting a small portion to use in the place of your normal creamer is something Baristas are used to.
“Will I Gain Weight From The Carbs?”
Eating a vegan diet is as much paying attention to balancing one’s diet as that of an omnivore. It’s a choice, and it becomes easier as it goes. If you eat strictly French fries, many will see a weight gain. Balancing protein intake with carbs and fibers is important. Finding new ways to fuel the body can be difficult at first, but finding new tastes in other, less meat-laden dishes (check out some Mediterranean, Indian and Asian dishes) can be exciting and life-changing. Many find that they lose weight on a vegan diet in part because they’re cutting a lot of fast- and processed-foods and are eating more whole-foods.
“Many find that they lose weight on a vegan diet.”
“My Family Won’t Accommodate My Choices”
Family gatherings can be rough for those with certain food sensitivities, allergies or conditions, as well as choices to abstain. Coming prepared is key in these situations. For bigger holiday gatherings, such as Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas it might be fun to bring a dish to share that fits the bill of a vegan lifestyle. Curry on Christmas? Absolutely. Quinoa at Easter? Perfect. This gives your family and friends the chance to experience a favorite dish of yours, whether you made it or ordered it, and makes sure that there is an option for any vegan that might come out of the woodwork. If feeding everyone isn’t your style, and it may not be, simply bringing enough food to satisfy yourself throughout the night should be completely understandable. Many traditional family meals in the Midwest include hefty portions of meat and dairy. It is unavoidable, unfortunately, and can be difficult for newbies. Many vegans, however, will say that after making their dietary transitions that they no longer crave meat.

It’s Your Choice
If there are still unanswered concerns about veganism (and it can become more than a dietary choice, and a lifestyle as well), TheVeganKit.com is a good resource to start with. Before making any major lifestyle changes, it is always advisable to have a chat with a nutritionist or your doctor to make sure that the changes start off in a positive way to benefit your unique health profile. Now, go to do some yoga and get that green smoothie, or grab a vanilla soy latte and get to work or simply sit back with a warm cup of Minestrone and relax; this is going to be a great change.

Pretty in Pink Turns 30!
11 Things You Didn’t Know About this Iconic 80s Film
By: Lisa A. Beach
L
ike other teens in the 1980s, I grew up watching my teen angst play out on the big screen through John Hughes’ string of iconic movies, from Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles to Some Kind of Wonderful and The Breakfast Club. The characters’ struggles of unrequited love, the haves and the have-nots and the social pecking order mirrored my own teen struggles, often to some amazing soundtracks. According to a recent Rolling Stone article, Pretty in Pink (1986) turns 30 this year. That gives us fans a great excuse to watch the movie again so we can see Molly Ringwald as a working-class outsider, Andie, Andrew McCarthy as rich, boywins-girl Blane, Jon Cryer as Andie’s misfit best bud Duckie and James Spader as upper-crust, boy-you-love-to-hate, Steff.
To celebrate Pretty In Pink’s 30th anniversary, I dug a little deeper into the movie to uncover these fun facts from IMDB and other sources:
18
APRIL 2016 | SASSY
1. Can you imagine anyone but Jon Cryer playing the role of lovable Duckie? Yet, if producers had their way, Anthony Michael Hall might have played Andie’s oddball best friend. When Hall declined the role for fear of being typecast as a geek, Hughes thought of casting Robert Downey, Jr., but ultimately chose Cryer for the role. (Interestingly, Hall also turned down a part in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off!)
3. Ironically, of all the films she’s made, Ringwald now cites Pretty in Pink as her favorite one.
2. It seems like Molly Ringwald was born to play Andie, and Hughes specifically wrote the role with her in mind. But, she initially turned it down. So guess who else was considered for the role? Jodie Foster, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tatum O’Neal, Brooke Shields, Lori Loughlin and Diane Lane. After hearing how the producers had a difficult time replacing her, Ringwald finally agreed to play Andie.
5. Pretty In Pink’s amazing emo-charged, new wave soundtrack made #11 on Rolling Stone's “The 25 Greatest Soundtracks of All Time.”
4. Ever the villain at heart, James Spader (hello, Blacklist) turned down the role of nice-boy Blane and chose to play bad-boy Steff instead. Interestingly, another bad-boy (Charlie Sheen) also auditioned for the role of Blane.
6. Hughes got the idea for Pretty in Pink after Ringwald told him about the Psychedelic Furs’ song of the same name. He wrote the screenplay a week after finishing Sixteen Candles, according to a 1986 article in Seventeen Magazine where Ringwald interviewed Hughes.
7. Jon Cryer reprised his famous Duckie dance in the record store on a recent episode of The Late Late Show. (As a side note, Jon Cryer missed the opportunity to play Chandler Bing of Friends fame due to an audition tape customs glitch while he was in the U.K.) 8. Both Pretty in Pink and Grease were filmed in the same high school in Los Angeles. 9. In the original ending, Andie ends up with Duckie rather than “richie” Blane. But, test audiences disapproved of the Andie-Duckie match-up and instead favored the star-crossed pairing of Andie and Blane. 10. Hughes also worried that the original ending might send the message that people of different economic backgrounds don’t belong together, so he nixed the Andie-Duckie ending and re-shot it. The problem? By the time he called back the main actors months later to re-do the scenes, Andrew McCarthy was already deep in role-prep for an upcoming play and had lost a lot of weight and shaved his head. In the film’s end scenes, you might notice McCarthy looking rather emaciated and wearing an auburn wig not quite matching his original hair color in the rest of the movie.

11. Despite their on-screen dislike for each other, in real life, Ringwald had a crush on Spader, according to an interview in The Atlantic. If you don’t have your own copy of Pretty in Pink to watch again, check your local public library (since many now offer DVD borrowing privileges) or see if it’s available for streaming on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime.

SCULPTING FOR SPRING Happy Springtime! Winter is on its way out and it is time to get ready for bathing suit and sundress season. Whether you are taking a beach vacation with the family or friends, it is important to feel self-confident in our warm weather fashion attire. The following routine is founded in Pilates with the addition of Barre exercises. They are combined to sculpt long-lean muscles carried by a beautiful posture. For this workout, grab a mat or towel and a small set of hand weights (full water bottles work too). Before beginning the "SCULPTING FOR SPRING" workout, pick a cardiovascular exercise and commit to performing it for at least 20 minutes. My favorite is to put my headphones on and dance in my living room, ala "Flashdance". Some other options are jogging, a brisk walk, a bike ride or even just up and down your staircase. Be creative and find a cardio exercise that makes you happy! Remember to apply your sunscreen and stay hydrated while having fun in the sun. From all of us at SASSY, have a safe and healthy spring break!

B. B. "Oblique Rock and Roll" A. Begin on your back with hands supporting head and right leg crossed over left. Secure lower back to floor. B. Curl up torso and lower body at the same time while reaching left elbow to right knee. Pelvis will lift off floor in a gentle roll. Return to start (A) to complete one rep. Complete 10-20 reps and then switch sides. This move will trim your waist. *To modify, keep uncrossed leg on ground. To increase difficulty, complete 30 reps on each side. 20

"All-In-One Seat Lift" A. Begin on all fours and then place a small hand weight (2-3 lbs.) behind the right knee. Find stability and then elevate the left knee approximately three inches off of floor. B. Keeping control of the whole body, lift the right leg while keeping the hand weight secured behind knee. Lower right leg back to start (A) to complete one rep. Do not arch the back or lose stability in the shoulders. Complete 10-20 reps and then switch sides. This move is created to tone the seat. *To modify, do not use the weight and keep the opposite knee down throughout the exercise.
"Pretzel" A. Begin seated with left leg in a "crisscross-apple-sauce" position and the right leg bent away from the body. Contract right gluteal muscles and lift right arm in air. Keep left arm down for support. B. While maintaining good form, lift bent right leg up off of ground. Bring it up until it is parallel to the floor. Return to start (A) to complete one rep. Complete 10-20 and then switch sides. This move is effective for the "muffintop" area.
A.
*To modify put both arms down for support. To intensify, add on 20 more lifts, but keep the leg up off of the ground and "pulse" rather than lifting and lowering.
B.
"Butterfly" A. Begin with right leg crossed in front of left with straight legs on balls of feet. Arms down with a slight bend in elbows.

B. Bend knees and pliĂŠ while arms move up with the elbows leading the way, like a butterfly fluttering its wings. Take arms all the way up until they make a "V" shape. Then begin to flutter arms back down, again with elbows leading the way, while legs straighten back to start (A) to complete one rep. Complete 10-20 reps and then repeat with left foot crossed over right. Don't go too fast, this movement is very controlled, pretend you are moving through wet cement. This movement will not only tone your shoulders, but it will create a beautiful back as well. *To modify, do not use weights. To intensify, complete 10 more reps.
"Second Position Duet Sculpt" A. Begin in a wide straddle stance(Second Position) on the balls of feet. Holding small hand weights (2-3 lbs), lift arms up to a 90 degree angle with elbows directly in front of shoulders. Lift the right elbow up about three inches higher than the left for the start position. B. Pulse down deeper into the straddle stance while lowering the right elbow and lifting the left elbow up. Return to start (A) to complete one rep. Perform for one to two minutes. This movement should be very small and should have a "pulse" rhythm to it. This move is great for slimming inner thighs and sculpting lean tank top arms. Do not arch your back and aim tail bone straight down. *To modify, keep heels down throughout the entire exercise and do not use weights. To intensify, set your timer for three minutes.

Fitness Trackers: Worth The Hype? By: Samantha Lewis
Fitness trackers are all the buzz of the health world today. Even if you don’t have one, there is no doubt a friend or family member does. And, there is also no doubt you’ve at least heard them exclaim, “I made my steps today!” From Fitbits to Jawbones and every other brand trying to capitalize on this techy health trend, yet has anybody stopped counting steps for a second to ask what the real benefits of these activity conscious bracelets are? While surveying women in the Michiana area about their fitness tracking devices, a few commonalities came about, despite which product was being used. The compliments were all quickly followed by the complaints, so the question remains…
22
APRIL 2016 | SASSY
“What’s the real price per step when it comes Like Newcomer, she also utilized the challenge aspect of the device where she would compete against other users to fitness trackers?” “I do believe it leads to a healthy lifestyle,” said Amy Elliot, “Even if I'm not always doing everything perfectly, at least I'm conscious of what I'm doing and tend to get back on track more quickly.” Elliot has been a Jawbone user since November after switching over from using a Fitbit for two months. She claims that the Fitbit Charge, while being one of the company’s most popular trackers, was too masculine for her taste, and after finding the slimmer Jawbone on sale for Black Friday this year, she made the transition. Her only complaints about the Jawbone have been that the clasp frequently comes undone, which she said was a common grievance once she saw reviews online, and she also dislikes that more people use Fitbit. “Which makes it easier to see how ‘Fitbit friends’ are doing.” A similar story for Carla Newcomer, a Fitbit user for almost two years who enjoys competing with family members on daily goals, “When I first got it, I was really watching my diet and was adding the exercise to my schedule. So for that time it was a check for me to use daily.” While Newcomer admits she’s neglected maintaining a 10,000 steps day-to-day goal as of recently, she still wears the device despite the fact that it is unable to maintain a charge regularly. This seems to also be an issue for several other Fitbit users whose online reviews of the product aren’t necessarily flattering for the brand. A failure to charge along with other complaints has caused customers like, Dawn Ziegler, to stop wearing the tracker. “I stopped wearing it because it won’t accurately register my steps and stops clearing at midnight,” said Ziegler, who also vouched for the fact that while her Fitbit was working properly it contributed to her maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and setting fitness goals.
in daily activity targets. This is an aspect of the Fitbit that does tend to set the company apart from other brands simply by its larger customer base. However, for devices rarely dipping below $100 with new products exceeding well over $200, shouldn’t the kinks be worked out by now? My mom has had to replace her Fitbit twice already, and she’s only had it for a year. While the company was quick to right their wrongs, I personally question what the attraction to these hi-tech step counters is. And yes, I know they have the capability to record heart rates, calories burned, GPS location and, for some, even sleep cycles; but with all the glitches I couldn’t help but wonder why you couldn’t just turn the MapMyRun app on your phone and see how far you’ve walked throughout the day?
And then it hit me. As I was talking on the phone with my mom after work, I realized what everybody was trying to tell me about these products that I hadn’t quite understood yet. “I only got 7,000 steps in today,” she said, “that’s not 10,000, but at least I know I did something.” A year ago before my mom owned a Fitbit, she wouldn’t have had any idea of how many steps she walked in a day. She wouldn’t have had a daily fitness goal of any sorts, let alone 10,000 steps; which by the way is somewhere close to five miles depending on your stride. And maybe for people who wake up and run 10 miles or take Crossfit classes, data analysis like this isn’t necessary for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but for some people looking down at your wrist and instantly being reminded of the goal you set for yourself will hold you accountable more so than an app on your phone or a number on the scale. Being healthy is a daily effort, and even on the days that we don’t meet our own standards, having a device that reminds us to reset and try again in the morning is just the motivation we need.

“Other Duties As Assigned” What to Do About Your Expanding Job By: Cyndy Searfoss
M
ost job descriptions include the phrase “other duties as assigned.” What was a catch-all phrase used by employers to indicate that there would be times when an employee might be asked to take on incidental work has become the back door to an expanded job description. Also known as an “invisible promotion” and “job enlargemen” this phenomenon is occurring more and more frequently as organizations are doing more work with fewer employees – and it often leads to employees taking on more responsibilities or additional tasks with no increase in pay or benefits. One of the dangers of an “invisible promotion” is that it can put you in the unenviable position of having to take on tasks you may not have the skill or experience to do well. Cases like these typically happen when an organization is growing rapidly or is part of a merger or acquisition. Instead of redefining jobs based on the new circumstances or adding new positions, in many companies existing jobs evolve – regardless of whether or not the employee in the position is able to handle it successfully.
What can be done about too many “other duties as assigned?” First, the bad news… unless your job is one that is covered by Federal regulations, such as an airline pilot or commercial truck driver, your employer can ask you to do any task, regardless of whether or not it is in your job description. Of course, other rules apply if the reason for the difference in treatment is illegal discrimination. If you feel you’re being treated differently because of your race, gender, age (if you’re over 40) or other protected category, it’s best to consult a labor attorney. 24
APRIL 2016 | SASSY
The good news is that there are effective tactics to help keep an expanding job description to manageable proportions. • If you’re fielding requests from other departments or divisions explain your role in the organization and your priorities. If you know someone in a better position to help with the request, pass along that information as well. • If the request is coming from within your department – but not from your boss – a good tactic is to defer to your supervisor before taking on the assignment. For example, “I’ll have to ask Joe how this fits with the other projects he has me working on.” • Ask yourself if what you’re being asked to do could work to your advantage in the future? If the extra work will help you build relationships with your co-workers or with new teams, think of it as an internal networking opportunity. Even in these cases, it’s a good idea to clarify that you’re being a team player and that while you’re glad to help out, you aren’t always able to accommodate these types of requests. Which leads to the most important tip in dealing with “other duties…”
• Make sure you and your boss are on the same page about your job responsibilities and priorities. If you find that he or she is the person most frequently asking you to do work outside your job description, schedule a meeting to review your position. Be sure to have a detailed record showing how your time is being spent, particularly as it relates to activities that aren’t on your job description. If the added tasks are making it hard to get priority work done, be sure to mention that. It may be time to update your job description or priorities. • To guard against an “invisible promotion” be sure to review your job description closely every few months, especially if you’re part of a rapidly growing company or employed by one that has recently experienced a merger or acquisition. If your role has changed dramatically or requires you to learn new skills or expand those you already have, don’t wait for your annual review to discuss the situation with your supervisor.

5 Public Speaking Tips
for Introverts
B
By: Allison Boelcke Smith
eing introverted in what can seem like an extroverts’ world doesn’t have to hold you back in your professional life. If you’re more inclined to listen and observe, or have a hard time being assertive or the center of attention, public speaking may be a skill that doesn’t necessarily align with your temperament. If you want to advance in your career, you can’t fly under the radar - you have to be able to deliver your ideas and advocate for yourself for new opportunities. Remember: you don’t have to try to change who you are, but rather know your natural tendencies enough to work with your strengths and develop solutions to counteract areas for which you struggle with public speaking.
1. Eliminate the Guesswork Fear of public speaking is often the result of not knowing what to expect and fearing everything that could go wrong in the moment. The more prepared you are for a presentation, the more in control and less nervous you'll feel. Practice as much as possible until the material is second nature to you. Think of possible questions and develop your responses. If possible, visit the location of your presentation and make yourself familiar with the podium, audience seating and any technology you'll have to deal with.
2. Focus on Your Audience As an introvert, you likely have an innate ability to observe people and connect on deeper levels one-on-one, as opposed to group settings. Use this talent to your advantage when creating a public speaking presentation. Think of the members of your audience as individual people and consider their perspectives - what are they hoping to get out of your presentation? If you approach your presentation as an interaction in which you're providing valuable information to each person, rather than thinking of them as one big group, you may find it easier to deliver the information in a confident manner.
3. Study Skilled Public Speakers Just because you may not think of yourself as naturally charismatic in front of crowds doesn't mean that you can't hone your skills and learn how to put on a compelling presentation. Instead of second-guessing yourself, use your observation skills to focus on what skilled public speakers have in common. Watch videos of motivational speakers or well-known CEOS and read transcripts to see if you notice any similarities. Once you can spot patterns, you can include them in your own presentations and rest assured that you're on the right track. 26
APRIL 2016 | SASSY
“When you smile, you can trick your body into thinking you're not stressed.”
4. Approach it like a Performance "Just be yourself" isn't often the best advice to an introvert who is concerned about public speaking because the whole situation is often completely out of the realm of their natural temperaments. Instead, accept that public speaking isn't really compatible with your introvert tendencies (i.e. preferring smaller, more personal interactions) and think of it as playing a part. Nail your performance by recording yourself practicing your presentation. Review your video to take note of how you come across and what modifications you need to make to be more convincing.
5. Stay Positive Acknowledge that you're making yourself vulnerable by public speaking, but vow to keep an upbeat attitude. A simple way to establish a positive tone to your presentation is to make it a point to smile at your audience. When you smile, you can trick your body into thinking you're not stressed, which in turn can make your brain actually feel more at ease. If you make a mistake, don't be afraid to pause to catch your breath and collect your thoughts before continuing.
Even if you prefer to avoid public speaking at all costs, you can still develop the skills you need to step out of your comfort zone and feel more confident when the times come. Many naturally outgoing people can find themselves struggling with a fear of public speaking - there’s a reason it’s among the most common phobias. So put in the practice, but don’t be too hard on yourself since your audience is likely more empathetic than you think. SASSY | APRIL 2016

Fighting Cancer with Dance at the
Pink Party Zumbathon By: Kate FitzMaurice Nearly 200 people, all dressed in pink, flooded the gym floor at Saint Mary’s Angela Athletic Facility on February 27th for the 4th annual Pink Party Zumbathon. The event, hosted by the Saint Mary’s College Stand up to Cancer Club, raised close to $2,000 for the Kelly Cares Foundation in support of cancer research. Saint Mary’s students and women throughout Michiana danced Zumba routines led by 15 licensed Zumba instructors, including Saint Mary’s alumna Kimmi Martin Troy. Representatives from Beyond Zen Pilates and Yoga Studio, The Michiana Family YMCA, DoTerra, Lululemon and more helped to support the cause.
Photos Provided By: St. Mary's College
This is the first year that the Stand Up to Cancer Club teamed up with the Kelly Cares Foundation. Paqui Kelly, the foundation’s co-founder, said the zumbathon was a great way to “be social and be healthy” and encouraged participants to “get their pink on.” Pink is the color of breast cancer awareness. Paqui Kelly is a two-time breast cancer survivor. Although participants were encouraged to wear pink to show breast cancer awareness, all types of cancer were recognized in the fight. Hannah Brinkman, vice president of the Saint Mary’s Stand up to Cancer Club, said participants danced for those who suffer from or have been affected by cancer. “Zumba is fun, but most importantly, people came to show their support for cancer research. I think it’s really important to do something to give back.” Donations can still be made to the Kelly Cares Foundation through their website, kellycaresfoundation.org.

On March 11, 2016, a capacity crowd of fathers, role models and a special group of young ladies attended the first Daddy Daughter Dance benefiting Safe Shelter for Domestic Violence at Shadowland Ballroom in Saint Joseph, MI. The dance floor was full all evening. Toasts were made with sparkling juice and an assortment of fresh fruit and cupcakes were served. A professional DJ played great dance hits including the “Chicken Dance.” Before playing this tune, the DJ, Roger Rader, announced that many mother’s probably met their father’s while dancing to this popular song. Every girl received a free raffle ticket for a chance to win a fabulous raffle prize such as a pretty pink Schwinn bicycle donated by Target. There was also a photo booth with fun props for guests to pose with if they desired. Guests also enjoyed several activities in the Curious Kids’ Discovery Zone and Silver Beach Carousel. Many went home with distributed flowers and balloons from the venue.

Most importantly, the father’s learned how they can be a more positive influence in the lives of these young ladies. This event created an evening of special memories between fathers, father figures and the important girls in their lives. In fact, several fathers arrived to the dance with two or more young ladies. Guests came from all communities throughout Berrien County and beyond. A special thank you goes to Chairperson, Megan Regan and the Dance Committee, who helped plan, organize and execute this very successful event benefiting the Safe Shelter program. Discussions are already underway for next year’s event.
