book review

The Taming

of the Queen

By Philippa Gregory Review By: Ashley Barnard, Young Adult / Reference Services Librarian Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library Harris Branch “Why would a woman marry a serial killer? Because she cannot refuse…” Almost everyone has heard the wild tales about Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, the second and fifth wives of King Henry the VIII. But what about Kateryn Parr? As Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife, Kateryn battled her way through the final four years of her husband’s life using her intelligence and quick-thinking. Philippa Gregory does a wonderful job concluding her Tudor Court series with The Taming of the Queen and provides an enjoyable retelling of the life of Kateryn Parr and the final years of Henry VIII’s reign. In The Taming of the Queen, twice widowed Kateryn looks forward to settling down with Thomas Seymour, the brother of King Henry’s third wife Jane. All this changes when she finds herself unexpectedly brought to court and faced with a marriage proposal from the king. As one simply cannot refuse King Henry VIII, even if he does have a history of disposing of his wives at an alarming rate, Kateryn takes on the role of Queen. Throughout the book, readers are able to follow Kateryn’s emotional journey as she tries to come to terms with her unexpected marriage. Initially resistant, Kateryn becomes charmed by Henry’s promises of love. Her emotions soon travel from wariness to trust, but eventually the tide turns and we find her journey coming full circle when she realizes Henry’s promises of love will never come to pass. Philippa Gregory does an excellent job of drawing in her audience, allowing them to connect with her characters and truly care about their outcome. Kateryn’s intellect and her independence make her shine and standout amongst those around her; however; these traits and the conflict they bring highlight the difficulties of being a woman at this time. Even in a position as high as the Queen, Kateryn is not allowed to voice her own opinions. As a supporter of the Protestant faith, Kateryn must walk a fine line. The crux of her struggle occurs when she finds herself voicing her concerns a little too loudly and losing the precarious balance she has until this point been able to maintain. She soon feels the heat of her husband’s dangerous gaze, as well as the opposition of her enemies, as they attempt to declare her a heretic. Kateryn finds herself trapped in a perilous game where she must outwit her opponents for the greatest prize of all….her life. If you are interested in learning more about the Tudors, check out the previous six books in Philippa Gregory’s Tudor Court Novels. Want to travel back a little further? Consider diving into Gregory’s The Cousin’s War series, which is composed of six books focused on the period leading up to the rise of the Tudor dynasty. 

How To Rock Holiday Makeup

at any age

Holiday celebrations are upon us! We want to look our very best and feel confident during these times with our coworkers, friends and family. There are many tutorials out there with great holiday inspirations and makeup trends, but most of the time they have young models with no signs of aging yet- this makes us wonder if the looks will be appropriate for our face or not. Also, the last thing we want to do is spend a long time fixing up our makeup after a long day of work or a busy day of running errands.

Here are four simple steps to go from work mode to party mode in no time. You can choose one of the following steps or choose them all:

Let’s imagine that in the morning you did your regular and basic polishing routine that includes tinted moisturizer and/or foundation, concealer, neutral eyeshadow (if it is part of routine only), brow filling if needed, mascara, blush and lip stick/lip gloss.

Fro mW

ORK to ENING loo EV

. k..

Step 1:

Apply dark matte brown or black shadow on the outside corners of your eyes in a circular motion with an eyeshadow blending brush. This step adds dimension to your eyes. Add a little bit on your lower lash line to define them a bit more.

Step 2:

Highlighter - With an angle brush, add a little on the inside corners of your eyes. Any light in the room will hit this area of your face, and it will give an amazing effect to your eyes. If you want more of this awesome effect on other areas of your face, add a little bit with your fingers above your cheekbones and on your lips’ cupid bow. Now your complexion will glow beautifully. Caution: Avoid highlighting any areas that have fine lines, since it will accentuate it them even more. 8

DECEMBER 2015 & JANUARY 2016 | SA SSY

Step 3:

Nude Eyeliner – This step is important if you want to make your eyes look bigger and brighter. Long hours at work can make our eyes look tired and red. Apply it on the waterline area of eyes.

Step 4:

Apply a peach/pink tone lipstick or rich gloss that is long lasting. If you can find a lip stain formula, that would great! Since you are going to be greeting and kissing, eating and drinking, it is safer to keep the color on your lips.

You’ll Need:

- Dark matte brown or black eyeshadow with an eyeshadow blending brush. - Nude/skin tone pencil eyeliner.

(Optional): Line your lips with a peach/pink tone long lasting lip liner if you want definition on your lips. Photos Provided By: Bethza Seminario

Optional steps:

- Highlighter: pearl white, peach or gold tones. - Peach toned lipstick or lip gloss – long lasting.

Extras (Optional): - Lip liner

- Dark matte red lip stain - Black pencil eyeliner - Bronze Glitter If you want to add more drama to your eyes, choose a black pencil eyeliner and apply on your waterline. This will give your eyes a more seductive look without having to darken the eyeshadows.

Feeling more adventurous? Find a deep red lip stain color for your lips to add a beautiful holiday pop. When you choose a darker version of red, you don’t have to be afraid that it will be too bright. It actually flatters most skin tones.

If you are feeling you can take your look to the next level, add a little bit of a bronzy toned glitter on your lids. Keep it on the movable area only, so anytime you blink, you’ll see the sparkle. 

Happy Holidays and hope this time can be a time of peace and bonding with your loved ones. SASSY | DECEMBER 2015 & JANUARY 2016

Hosting a

Stress-Free

holiday party By: Allison Boelcke Smith

The holiday season is a prime time for gatherings, but playing hostess can be a challenging endeavor - with all of the planning and execution, it can feel like a full-time job on top of juggling your everyday workload. Maintain your holiday spirit while undertaking the task with these tips for hosting a stress-free holiday party:

Start Early When it comes to holiday parties, one of the worst possible disasters can occur is if you do all the prep work and no one shows. There are so many social events going on in December and people’s calendars fill up fast. Pick a date and invite guests ahead of time (two to three weeks if possible) so your event gets onto their radar. Tackle any deep-cleaning or household projects in the weeks ahead of your party, so you have one less task to deal with as the date gets closer. Decide on a menu, and stock up on supplies as early as possible to avoid last minute trips to the store during a high-stress time.

10

DECEMBER 2015 & JANUARY 2016 | SASSY

Pick Low-Maintenance Food Options Delicious food is among the top traditions that people tend to look forward to during the holidays. Putting together an elaborate spread is a worthwhile goal that your guests will appreciate, but you know what they’ll appreciate even more? Enjoying the company of a hostess who isn’t distracted or on edge. Consider what steps you can take to balance out your desire for providing a tasty spread with the very real need to keep yourself calm and collected. Stick to “tried and true” recipes that you have had past success with to prevent dealing with a new recipe failure right before the party starts. Try to make as much of the menu ahead of time, whether it’s an entire appetizer you can freeze or simply prepping individual ingredients in the days before.

Loosen Up and Know When to Delegate

Make a Schedule There are so many details that go into planning a holiday party that some can easily slip your mind unless you have everything accounted for through an actual written schedule. Think of the tasks you need to do leading up to the party itself, from shopping to decorating to cleaning. Then, schedule a date and time to do them. For the big day of the party, it’s helpful to work backwards when creating your schedule – start with your guests arriving and work your way in reverse from there to list out all of the things you need to do and how long they will take. Take the accumulative amount of time and then give yourself an extra hour as buffer – if you need it, you’ll be so grateful and if you don’t, you’ll have a chance to relax and wait for your guests to arrive.

As you’re planning your “To Do” list for your holiday party, see if there are areas in which you could make things easier on yourself by taking some short-cuts. Do you really need to make everything yourself or could you actually take up guests on their offers to bring something? Is it essential to prepare everything from scratch or will some pre-made items work? Don’t be afraid to get help when you need it or let perfectionist tendencies make your miserable for your party. Your guests won’t likely notice or care if you have a store bought veggie tray but will be able to tell if you seem worn-down from trying to do too much.

The role of holiday party host no longer has to be synonymous with stress. With some mindful preparation, you can actually take part in the festivity of your holiday event, rather than being harried and anxious.  SASSY | DECEMBER 2015 & JANUARY 2016

Beating the

Winter Blues By: Jamie Lober

Winter is beautiful but does not come without challenges. “Mental health professionals have definitely agreed that seasonal affective disorder is absolutely real and is a combination of the weather and grey skies, psychological and physiological reasons and the holidays thrown in the mix which can be a total nightmare for people,” said David Berman, director of development for Mental Health America of Indiana. Seasonal affective disorder is depression with a seasonal pattern that includes beginning and ending during a specific season every year, no episodes of depression during the seasons you experience a normal mood and many more seasons of depression than seasons without depression over the course of your illness. While the quickest solution would be to go on a vacation somewhere warm, it is not always viable. “Having a consistent, regular exercise routine to get the endorphins going, reduce perception of pain and improve mood is key during the winter,” said Berman. There are even exercises you can do sitting on your couch as you watch television or sitting at your desk at work.

Diet matters.

“Around the holidays there is a lot of good food, primarily all carbohydrates which people crave due to decreased sunlight activity in the brain due to decreased sunlight,” said Berman. You are missing the vitamin D that you get from the sun and should replace it with supplements to help seasonal affective disorder or eat citrus fruits. Omega3s are also instrumental. Aim to arrange your home and office so as much sunlight can come in the windows as possible. Some people turn to phototherapy or bright light therapy to suppress the brain’s secretion of melatonin and it has been found to be highly effective. “Indiana is in the bottom three states as far as days of sunlight, so we are a grey state that gets a lot of rain and it is a terrible place to live if your body needs that sunlight,” said Berman.

Be in tune to your emotional health. “Self-awareness is good to have, so if you notice changes in your eating or sleeping habits you may need to take steps to change your mood and the pattern you are in,” said Berman. Usually it is a family member, friend or coworker who is aware of a change. “It is our responsibility to be aware of those we care about and look for signs of depression whether they are more irritable or tired than normal, sleeping or eating patterns change or they are gaining or losing weight,” said Berman. It is easy to make changes before serious depression sets in. “Around fall time, October and November, start doing things like supplementing your vitamin D and exercising regularly,” said Berman. Sometimes the doctor may prescribe an antidepressant which can be helpful but may take a few weeks to notice benefits.

Do not ignore signs of danger. “Severe

“The winter blues are treatable, whether you turn to counseling, group therapy, medication or lifestyle modifications. ”

signs of depression are thoughts of suicide, riskier behaviors, giving away possessions, talking about how down you are, sleeping more or less or really not caring about any activities going on around the holidays,” said Berman. Everyone should make it a point to find someone they trust and express how they are feeling. “It is always good to have an objective sounding board whether a therapist or friend,” said Berman. If you consult with a therapist or your physician it can be helpful to keep a log including your symptoms, when your depression began and what seemed to make it better or worse, any mental or physical health issues you have that could affect your mood, any major stressors or recent life changes, any medications including vitamins and supplements you are taking including dosages and questions you want to ask. The winter blues are treatable, whether you turn to counseling, group therapy, medication or lifestyle modifications. Psychotherapy, also referred to as talk therapy, can help you identify and change negative thoughts and behaviors that are making you feel bad, learn healthy ways to cope and figure out how to manage stress. It all depends on the person and the severity and no two people approach winter the same. “There are some people that absolutely thrive on the holidays and it can alleviate their mood but for others it is part of the cause and exacerbates the problem,” said Berman. Be in tune with yourself. “Know your body and the things you enjoy doing,” said Berman. Find activities you like and make time to do them. Before you know it the snow will melt and flowers will be in bloom again. 

4-in-1

Cookie Dough By: Katie & Theresa Slott

Katie and Theresa Slott are sisters-in-laws who write the food blog, Cooking for the Fam, where they share lots of tips, family-favorite recipes and meal plans. For more recipes like this one, or to see step-by-step photos of this recipe, check out their website, www.cooking forthefam.com.

Time:

About 10 minutes prep plus 3 hour chilling time, 60 minutes decorating/baking

Makes:

About 4 dozen cookies (about 1 dozen of each variety)

Ingredients:

For the dough: • 2 c. flour • 1 ½ t. baking powder • ¼ t. salt • 6 T. unsalted butter, softened • 1/3 c. shortening • ¾ c. sugar • 1 egg • 1 T. milk • 1 t. vanilla For the Kiss Cookies: 9-12 Kisses & ½ c. sugar for rolling For the Thumbprint Cookies: Jelly, Nutella or frosting For the Swirl Cookies: Food coloring of choice For the Cutouts: Sprinkles

Steps: To make the dough: 1. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat butter and shortening for 30 seconds. Add sugar and beat until fluffy. Beat in egg, milk and vanilla. Add dry ingredients and beat until well combined. 2. To make four different cookies, divide the dough evenly into four containers. Divide one of the quarters in two. Add food coloring to one or both halves. Cover and chill for at least three hours. Best if left overnight. 3. Preheat the oven to 375F. For Swirl Cookies: Roll out each color of dough into a rectangle, about 4x12 inches. Layer the rectangles on top of each other. Starting on one short side, roll the rectangles together into a log. Cover and return to the refrigerator to chill while you work with the other dough. For the Kiss cookies: Roll the dough into one inch balls. Roll the balls in granulated sugar and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake eight to 10 minutes. Immediately top with unwrapped Kisses. Remove to a cooling rack to cool. For the Thumbprint cookies: Roll the dough into one inch balls. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Press the center of the ball down with your thumb. Bake eight to 10 minutes. Remove to a cooling rack to cool. Once cooled, put a heaping tablespoon of jelly or other desired filling in the thumbprint. For the Cut Outs: On a floured surface, roll the dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Using your favorite holiday cookie cutters, dip the cutter in flour and cut out cookies. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Decorate with sprinkles. Bake for six to eight minutes. Remove to a cooling rack to cool. For the Swirl Cookies: Remove dough log from the refrigerator. Using a sharp knife, slice the dough into ¼-1/2 inch slices. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for six to eight minutes. Remove to a cooling rack to cool.

Tips:

• Be careful not to overwork the dough, as that can result in less tender cookies. For the Cut Outs and Swirl Cookies that are rolled more than the others, it can be helpful to stick the tray of formed cookies in the freezer while the previous tray bakes. Chilling the dough for a few minutes can make a big difference in the texture of the cookies! • All of these cookies freeze well. Place them in a sealed container with a layer of wax paper in between cookies. A hard container works better than a freezer bag for cookies like Cut Outs that may be more fragile, depending on the shape. SASSY | DECEMBER 2015 & JANUARY 2016

balance By: Andrew Skipper

Holiday Decorating

Your Way It’s the most wonderful time of the year! But, the holidays can also bring added stress with them. There are gifts to buy and wrap, parties to plan, events to attend, food to be cooked, tables to be set and houses to be decorated. With a long to do list, many people feel overwhelmed and end up missing out on some of the simple joys of the holiday season. The good news is that you are in charge of how much you commit to and when it comes to decorating the house and entertaining, “balance” is your best friend.

Instead of feeling like there isn’t enough time in the day, here are some tips to help you ease into the holiday season and make time for the most special people in your life: First things first, decorating your home should be a fun experience that brings you pleasure. If it’s feeling like a daunting task, take a step back and figure out why. Are you putting up too many decorations so that the house feels cluttered? Do you not like the decorations you have? Do you not want to spend the time doing it? All of these problems have solutions!

feeling cluttered? If you find your hoME feeling cluttered after you decorate for the holidays, chances are you won’t be at ease in your own home! That’s never a good thing. Ask yourself why you feel the need to put up so many decorations when what you’d really prefer is a minimal look. Is it because your parents put up a lot of decorations and you feel like you should keep up the tradition? Is it because you’ve been given many decorations as gifts from friends and family and don’t want to let people down by not using “their” decoration? The reality is that you don’t have to put out (or even keep) every holiday decoration you have. Rather than use everything, put items on a rotation where you only use 1/4 of your decor each year. Then you won’t feel so claustrophobic and each year your house will look a bit different! After all, variety is the spice of life!

If you find yourself not liking the look of your decorated home, it may be because you don’t really enjoy your decorations anymore. It’s normal for tastes to change over the years! Remember that haircut you had in the 80’s that you would never have now? Remember that outfit you once thought was so cool and now looking back makes you laugh? The same thing applies to holiday decor. Why not look through decorating magazines and take note of what jumps out at you and is pleasing to your eye? Once you’ve identified your new preferred style, begin to replace your decorations. Swap out that tired swag for a new garland. Donate your old centerpiece and substitute a fresh one. Change up your color palate for something completely different. If your holiday decor feels disjointed, it’s a good idea to choose one theme or color palate and stick with it. For instance, having snowmen, Santas, Nativity scenes, elves, reindeer and snowflakes all in one room can leave you feeling overstimulated! Remember, your home isn’t a department store and shouldn’t make you feel overwhelmed. Perhaps choosing one theme and eliminating everything else will give you a better sense of harmony. When it comes to color palates, often times it’s helpful to choose three complimentary colors for the majority of your decor. This helps keep things from looking gaudy. Some color recipes that work well together are red, green and gold; silver, blue and white; or burgundy, green and gold. Some people love to decorate and look forward to coming home each evening and adding a touch of the holidays here and there. Still others can’t wait to take an entire weekend and put up lights, garlands and wreaths. However many people feel like decorating is a chore and dread the hours of unpacking ornaments and fiddling with tiny hooks. They love the way the house feels after it’s decorated, but the process is not pleasing to them. If you belong to the latter group, it may be well worth the investment to hire someone to decorate your house for the holidays. A decorator can often help you decide what should go up and what needs to be replaced, and they also can usually decorate your space in a faster amount of time because of their efficiency, allowing you to simply sit back and enjoy the season.

The reality is that your home should be a reflection of you and the things you love all year long, including the holiday season! Only put out decorations that bring you pleasure and remind you of happy memories. Choose a few prominent places in the house to focus on such as the mantel, an entry table, and the dining room sideboard. By limiting your decor to these focal points, and only using items that you love, you’ll take the stress out of decorating and find yourself enjoying the most important thing this season—relationships. By taking control of your holiday decorating and figuring out what brings you pleasure, you’re setting the backdrop for a joyful season that can be shared with your loved ones in a home that is welcoming, nurturing, and a personal reflection of everything you want to convey to all who enter it. 

Tips to

Kickstart

your Career in 2016

By: Allison Boelcke Smith

As this year comes to an end, organizations will start to look forward to next year. But, this can also...... it can also serve as an opportunity for you to take stock of your career and decide how you want to move forward or improve. Whether you’re searching for a new job or want to make the most of the one you currently have, start 2016 off right with these career resolutions:

Aim to Learn Something New

Strive each day to try to get as much out of the experience as possible by soaking up knowledge whenever you can. This applies to both job searching and a current job. Having relevant skills makes you more marketable for new jobs and promotions/raises. So volunteer for projects, ask questions – even a stressful or annoying work-related situation can improve your communication, conflict resolution, or ability to withstand pressure. Frame each day and each opportunity as a learning experience, and you might be surprised at how much more motivated you are.

Master the Art of the To-Do List

Effort doesn’t necessarily coincide with results if you don’t have an effective method to prioritize and plan your tasks. Focus on being more intentional with your To-Do list in 2016. Remember: it’s a To-Do list, not a wish list, so make it realistic with number of items. Then determine your number one priority for the day and schedule it for the time you know you’re at your best.

“Frame each day and each opportunity as a

For example, if you’re most motivated in the mornings, don’t waste that time on low-effort tasks like filing or scanning online job boards. Instead, use that time for your number one priority, and then schedule your low-effort tasks for the time of day when you start to lag. You’ll get better results without increased mental effort.

learning experience.”

DECEMBER 2015 & JANUARY 2016 | SASSY

Make Networking a Priority

It’s standard career advice to network - networking with other people and forming professional relationships is beneficial for job seeking (as most jobs are generally offered to referrals) and non-job seekers (to gain industry insight for current issues and overall advice for the future.) Even though most professionals know networking is key, it often gets pushed aside for more immediate concerns or concrete goals. To ensure that you actually network more in 2016, set a small and measurable action to take on a regular basis. This could be “Collect three business cards at a conference” or “Invite one contact per month out to coffee.”

“Schedule in time on a regular, recurring basis to work toward your professional long-term goals.” Make More Time for Goals

Working toward long-term goals is often one of the first things to go when you’re deciding how to best utilize your daily workload. However, if you put off getting started until you “have more time” you likely won’t ever move forward. After all, what are the odds that your workload or other priorities will magically decline? Instead, strive to “steal time” from other activities that perhaps aren’t the best use of your time. Take an objective look at how you spend an average day and figure out which activities are time-suckers that could be reduced, streamlined to be more efficient, or even eliminated. Schedule in time on a regular, recurring basis to work toward your professional long-term goals that may have otherwise fallen through the cracks and given up on (or stuck in the “when I get to it” holding stage). Even if it’s just a tiny baby step at a time, if taken consistently, you’ll get farther and have less regret than waiting for the ideal time.

Have More Fun

To be more effective at accomplishing your career goals, you need to take time away from them regularly. Working too hard and long without a break will result in mental fatigue that makes you unable to put forth your best effort for your career endeavors. If you have vacation time, actually use it. Schedule one day a week in which to stop job searching and go see friends. Practice self-care, such as taking part in your favorite hobbies and unwinding each day with a relaxation activity. You’ll be more refreshed and able to tackle your goals with renewed energy.

So much of your career path is out of your hands, but even more is truly in your hands. By making your career resolutions a priority, you can be a more proactive contributor in shaping your future. SASSY | DECEMBER 2015 & JANUARY 2016

Magazine is honored to highlight the 2016 class of Women to Watch! SASSY

Women from all over Michiana were nominated by their peers, colleagues, friends and family for their embodiment of the sassy spirit, combining work, life, balance and sass—at home, in their communities and in the workplace. We are truly pleased to bestow the honor of being named a 2016 Woman to Watch to all of these women who are working tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of others. With an entire stack of nominations received, our panel had their work cut out for them to choose this year’s class—but these women all stood out for their professionalism, work ethic and spirit of volunteerism. These are all qualities that make up a SASSY woman—and will never go out of style!

Congratulations to all of our 2016 Women to Watch!
