Five Facts
You May Not Know About Your
Heart
February is National Heart Awareness Month! Learn more about your heart with these five facts below!
1. According to the Library of Science’s Mysteries series, your heart is the hardest working muscle in your body. It pumps out two ounces of blood at every heartbeat! 2. Those who live a more stationary life have a higher risk of heart disease. Get up and MOVE! 3. Did you know that your heart can actually break? Studies have proven when someone loses a loved one, they have a higher risk of having a heart attack.
4. Your heart is actually in the center of your chest not on the left. The Pledge of Allegiance had us all fooled. 5. Attention all coffee drinkers! The Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, California discovered people who drink four or more cups of coffee each day had an 18% lower risk of hospitalization for heart rhythm troubles!

How Lucky You Are By Kristyn Kusek Lewis
How do you not only create a working environment where your employees feel not only free to be open and honest, but find ways to manage that creative culture and keep it alive over time? This is the question that sent Ed Catmull, President of the Pixar Animation and Disney Animation studios, into a period of deep reflection. For nearly twenty years, Ed had held on to a dream that he would help to create the first movie to be entirely animated using computers. With the release of Toy Story in 1994, Ed had not only achieved his dream, but had built something he was desperate to protect. Pixar was still a young, experimental, and marginally profitable studio with incredible potential. However, he now faced the question so many of us realize when they achieve a long held goal… Now what? Ed soon realized, that despite the enthusiasm and excitement that surrounded Pixar’s workplace, there were still troubling issues that could sink his young studio before it could achieve its potential, and that sometimes great success can simply hide serious underlying problems. In Mr. Catmull’s own words, ‘being on the lookout for problems, I realized, is not the same as seeing problems.’ In this, he found his new purpose as a manager, not only looking forward but looking inward to discover some of the deeply rooted (and at times invisible) problems that can grow into far greater crises down the road. Creativity, Inc. is equal parts biography, studio history, and a ‘how to’ guide for managing a forwardthinking working environment. On his introspective journey, Ed sprinkles in anecdotes about the managerial styles he has worked under in his early jobs and his interactions with Lucasfilm, Disney, Apple, and Microsoft, and lets the story of Pixar’s birth and growth show how he has developed his own philosophy for how to manage a creative culture. The Pixar philosophy is rooted in a sense of creative freedom, honesty, and flat managerial landscapes.
By encouraging employees to communicate directly and candidly, avoiding the establishment of formal or informal hierarchies, and placing the emphasis on creating a culture of respect for individuality, the Pixar workplace has thrived. Catmull argues that if your employees do not feel the freedom to express themselves, you lose out. Further, inspiration can come from anyone, and anywhere. If your workplace is not listening for those ideas, it risks becoming stagnant. Mr. Catmull, who most recently has become the President of Disney’s Animation studios as part of the greater merger of Disney and Pixar, also shows how the Pixar philosophy was exportable to a new environment. Disney’s Animation studios, whose post-merger offerings of Tangled, Wreck-it Ralph and Frozen, provide an excellent example for how a change in culture helped created a fertile environment for inspiration and success. In closing, I would be remiss to not mention that also included is a very touching tribute to Pixar co-founder and friend, Steve Jobs. Ed and Steve had a very dynamic and loyal friendship, and Mr. Catmull offers an intimate insight to Jobs’ personality as an afterword. While Creativity, Inc. will certainly appeal to fans of Pixar, it is a fascinating and perhaps important read for any manager, as Catmull’s philosophy is unique and challenges traditional ideas about structure and communication in the workplace. I would highly recommend Creativity Inc. to any manager of a creative and dynamic workplace, or perhaps more importantly those who aspire to create one.

Too Many Bad Hair Days...
It’s time for a change! By: Kathy Friend
M
aybe it’s time for you to rev up your look. According to master stylist Kerri Spencer, owner of Kerri’s Avenue Salon, “One thing that can quickly date your look is your hairstyle. You can easily look 10 years younger with an updated hairstyle. This is why we suggest changing your style, even slightly, every year.” When choosing the best haircut, consider your face shape. Kerri says, “The most important thing about your hair cut is to make sure it fits your face, draws attention to your best features and minimizes flaws. The goal is to get to a balanced oval shape.”
ROUND FACE:
OVAL FACE:
If you have a round face, consider a hairstyle with varying lengths and angles. Straight styles also work very nicely for you. Try something with a side part and a side-swept bang. Remember to keep some fullness on the top to create balance. Best Cut: A Shaggy or Angled Bob Avoid: • Center Parts • Fullness on the Sides 8
FeBRUARY 2015 | SASSY
If you have an oval face, most hairstyles will look good on you. Bangs are a must. Depending on your style and age, try a side swept bang or a blunt bang. Soft waves can work nicely for you to add volume at the sides. Best cut: Shoulder Length (or Longer) Bob with Slight Bang and Fullness on the Sides Avoid: • No Bangs • Straight Severe Styles
SQUARE FACE:
If you have a square face, the goal with your hair is to create some softness with curls and waves. You will want to pay particular attention to the crown to be sure you are adding volume. This will create a nice balance. Short and medium length hair styles are the best for you. Best cut: A Shoulder Length Tousled Shag Avoid: • Styles that End at your Chin • Super Straight Hair
HEART FACE:
If you have a heart shaped face, styles that hit at the neck/chin add volume to the bottom portion of your face creating a beautiful balance. Long styles are also great for you. Choose a style that will have varying layers around your face, with one layer hitting near your ears / nose and the other at your chin. Best cut: Longer Styles with Multi Layers Around the Face Avoid: • Styles that Have a Lot of Height at the Crown • Straight Styles with No Layers
When it comes to color it is easy to make a mistake or get stuck in a rut. Kerri says, “As a general rule, you should keep some of your natural color peeking through somewhere.” To find the perfect color, consider your skin tone. Determine the underlying tones in your skin by using color swatches; silver or blue for cool, and gold or yellow for warm. Place these on the face/neck and see what is the most flattering to your skin tone. Pay attention to increased ruddyness, wrinkles or darkness under your eyes. Those are the tones you should avoid in your hair color. Be sure to do this wearing no makeup (or very little) and in an area that is well lit with natural lighting. Outside on a sunny day is best. Another trick is to look at the underside of your wrists in sunlight. If you see more blue you are a cool. If you see more green/yellow you are a warm. Best for Cool Tones: Choose a shade with some warmth like golden blonde, orange-red, honey light brown or chocolate brunette
Best for Warm Tones: Cooler hair tones will be beautiful on you. Try ash brown, beige blonde, champagne light blonde, auburn red or dark espresso brown
Whatever you decide to do to add some sass to your hair this year, remember that you are beautiful! Don’t try to get the exact hairstyle of that red-carpet celebrity or something like your best friend. Your own kind of beautiful is always the best choice. SAS SY | February 2015

The sun, cold and dry air during the winter months can damage your skin. Even if you spend most of your time indoors in the winter, the heat that is keeping you warm is also drying out your skin. Following a winter skincare routine is crucial to keeping your skin soft and healthy.
Here is a basic winter skincare routine that anyone can follow: Wash Your Face with a Gentle Cleanser Washing your face twice a day is preferred. If you cannot wash your face twice daily, wash it at night to remove your makeup. It is important to cleanse the dirt and oil from your skin to keep it healthy and radiant.
10
FeBRUARY 2015 | SASSY
Moisturize Because the winter wind and cold dry the skin, moisturizing is a must! Tinted moisturizers are a good option if you want to moisturize and get some coverage. Make sure your moisturizer has sunscreen as well. Just because it is winter doesn’t mean you can forget the sunscreen! If you are going to use a lotion as a moisturizer, look at the ingredients to make sure it does not contain alcohol. Alcohol dries out your skin; so, it is best to avoid using anything that has alcohol in it when intending to hydrate your skin.
Drink Enough Water Water helps hydrate your skin. You have often heard how important it is to drink plenty of water ---at least eight glasses a day or half your body weight in ounces.
Use a Humidifier When it comes to your skin, using a humidifier to add moisture to the inside air is beneficial. This isn’t necessarily part of your routine, but it will help with keeping your skin from drying out.
Get into a skincare routine and you will notice your skin will be better prepared for the rest of the winter season. Wash your face daily, moisturize, drink enough water and possibly use a humidifier to add moisture to the air to help protect your skin indoors. SASSY | February 2015

Five Fun and Inexpensive
Valentine’s Day
Date Ideas
Michiana Date Ideas for Every Couple By: Alexa Tupper
t’s that magical time of year again: Cupid is armed with his bow, pink and red candy line the aisles of the grocery store and love is in the air. Whether you love the outdoors or enjoy seeing a movie with your man, the last thing you want to be worried about is the financial aspect of romance. If you’re in search of an inexpensive and exciting date with your significant other, here are five fun ideas that will make for a sweet night with the one you love:
For the music and performance lovers Michiana has a rich mix of local bands and performers, so head over to your local bar or tavern to treat your ears. Most venues have websites and will post their lineups for the night, so if you’re looking to enjoy a performance, this is your gig. Going local for shows is beneficial not only for you, but also for the local artist. Michiana is full of untapped talent, so get out and take a listen. Plus, when they make it to the big time, you can say that you knew them before they were famous.
For the outdoorsy couple If the name of your game is being active, lace up your skates and hit the rink. For a couple on their first date, skating together is a great way to break the ice. Even if you’ve been together for years, going ice skating is a fun way to reconnect as you hold onto each other as you skate along. When you’ve had enough of the cold and you’re ready to warm up, head over to a coffeehouse and order your favorite hot drink. 12
FeBRUARY 2015 | SASSY
For the sports diehards While Notre Dame football seems to dominate the fall sports lineup, their winter sports are sure to be a big hit if you’ve got a competitive spirit. Watching a game is especially great for first dates because it takes the pressure off the two of you if things get awkward. If you’ve been together for a while, you can still have a ball by rooting on your favorite team together.
For the wine fanatics Who said you have to go to Italy to experience all that wine has to offer? There are several wineries within driving distance of Michiana that offer wine tastings and tours of the facilities for a reasonable price. If you’re looking to go with other couples, there are car rental services in the area that offer packages for limo services to take groups up for the day.
For the homebodies There’s nothing wrong with staying in for Valentine’s Day, and being cozied up by the fireplace can be more romantic than going out. If you want to stay at home, consider spicing up the night by cooking a meal together and picking out a romantic movie. Pinterest is a go-to for all your recipe needs, and cooking together is a low-budget option.

5 Facts You Need to Know about Valentine’s Day
Flowers
A
1
By: Alexa Tupper
s Valentine’s Day gets closer, there’s no better way to say you care than sending someone a bouquet of their favorite flowers. Men aren’t the only ones who are purchasing flowers, though. Sheryl Luczkowski, owner of Flowers By Stephen, knows that there are a multitude of reasons for buying flowers, no matter who you are.
#

#
“While men buy flowers mostly for romantic reasons, women use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to show they care to mothers, friends, children, as well as, their sweethearts,” Luczkowski said. “Women even treat themselves on Valentine’s Day.” Whether you’re buying or receiving on February 14, here are five things you should know about floral arrangements.
Most Popular

FeBRUARY 2015 | SASSY
In past seasons at Flowers By Stephen, Luczkowski has noted that roses are clearly the most popular, specifically red and pink roses. After roses, lilies come in second for most sought after flower for your sweetie. Tulips are the third place winner.
Meaning
Behind the Flower
Traditionally, roses are considered the most romantic of all flowers. Luczkowski agrees that roses are “the ultimate symbol of love.” Red roses are most commonly thought to convey sentiments of “I love you,” while pink roses are more geared toward expressing gratitude and appreciation. White roses are associated with innocence and new beginnings, while orange roses show zeal and infatuation. Yellow roses convey friendship.
Different colored lilies have similar meanings to roses. Innocence and purity are common associations for white lilies, as opposed to orange lilies, which symbolize passion just as red roses do. Yellow lilies are reminiscent of joy. “Oriental or Asiatic lilies symbolize beauty,” Luczkowski said. “Tulips stand for perfect love,” she said. Like roses and lilies, tulips take on different meanings as the colors change. Red tulips are thought of as a declaration of true love, while yellow tulips are thought to be more cheerful and mild. Tulips that are white represent Heaven while purple tulips represent royalty.
Tips for Keeping Flowers Fresh and Beautiful
While there are many old wives tales about dropping an aspirin in a water-filled vase to extend the longevity of your flowers, we have several tried and true methods to keeping your flowers alive and perky for as long as possible. If you’re cutting the stems of your flowers, cut at an angle and submerge them in water as soon as possible. Changing the water regularly is vital for your flowers’ health. “Even if the water level isn’t low, entirely replace the water every 2-3 days,” Luczkowski said. Fresh water is best because bacteria tend to grow on stems that have been sitting in old water. Lastly, use the packets of flower food that florists include with your arrangement. This packet provides nutrients that are essential for healthy flowers.
When to Order
Because Valentine’s Day is a major day for florists, on average they will get in all their flowers five to seven days before February 14. “It takes hours of prep work to process the thousands of roses that we get for Valentine’s Day orders,” Luczkowski said. It’s important to order ahead of time to have the best selection and to give the florist ample time to assemble your order. You also don’t want to wait too long because the florist may run out of flowers. “Last year, we and the wholesalers actually ran out of roses,” she said.
Upcoming Trends
If you’re looking to impress with the latest trend, go for flowers that are full and lush, such as hydrangeas, tulips, lisianthis or orchids. Additionally, Luczkowski has seen an increase in requests for “modern styled, compact arrangements in cubes or bowls.” As for her favorite, she would choose a simple cylinder full of tulips, iris or orchids for its Zen quality.
“Go for
flowers
that are full and lush.” Whatever you choose, your loved one is sure to enjoy the thought you put into your flower selection. “Valentine’s Day is the holiday where people take time to express their love,” she said. “Flowers aren’t a practical gift like a toaster. It’s simply a gift that voices feelings.” SASSY | February 2015

Budget-Friendly Brown Bag
Lunches By: Cyndy Searfoss
Brown-bag lunches are a great way to save for a rainy day – or as a way to save up for a special treat. After all, spending $10 a day on a burger, fries and drink isn’t good for your wallet or your health. But best of all, they don’t have to be boring or bland. Here is a week’s worth of tasty lunches designed to maximize taste and savings… plus, they’re low in calories!
Other money and/or health conscious
lunch tips: Drink water rather than canned soda or teas. You’ll save $5-7 each week. Take a brisk 20-minute walk after you eat – ask a friend or co-worker to join you to make the time go faster. Keep a supply of low-sodium, low-calorie soups and whole-wheat crackers at work in case you forget your lunch or for a quick afternoon pick-me-up.
Peanut Butter and Banana Tortilla Wrap (1) whole wheat tortilla (1) tablespoon peanut butter (1) medium banana Spread the peanut butter on one side of the tortilla, peel the banana and place on one side of the tortilla – roll the wrap around the banana. For a well-balanced lunch, pair with: (1) low-fat mozzarella cheese stick One handful each: snow peas, baby carrots and broccoli (1 oz.) ranch dressing TOTAL CALORIE COUNT: 569
Pita Salad Pocket (1) whole wheat pita pocket Bagged salad (1) hard boiled egg (1) slice of turkey (1 oz.) balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing Fold turkey to fit in pita pocket, chop hard-boiled egg and place in pita pocket, place bagged salad inside to fill. Top with dressing before eating. For a sweet treat after, bring along: (6 oz) vanilla Greek yogurt (1 cup) blueberries TOTAL CALORIE COUNT: 590

(1) single-serving Fritos® corn chips (1 oz) salsa (1) small tomato, diced (1 oz) shredded cheese Heat refried beans in a microwave for approximately 1 minute (or until hot). Add salsa until mixture can be easily poured. Spoon mixture over corn chips and top with shredded cheese. This is one that’s easy to eat at your desk if you’re rushing to make a deadline. Hint: the ingredients stay fresher and taste better if kept separate until it’s time to eat – this is why layered salads in Mason jars have become a food/blog sensation. Don’t worry if you don’t have a Mason jar handy (if you do, quart-size work best). Simply keep the ingredients in individual plastic bags until lunchtime. This version is a great way to use up last-night’s leftover shrimp from stirfry or shrimp cocktail. Hard-boiled egg, tuna or turkey make good low-calorie substitutes.
Hummus Bagel Pizza (1) whole wheat bagel (2 oz) hummus (1 oz) feta cheese (1) small tomato, diced Cut in half and lightly toast bagel, spread each half with hummus, add diced tomato and feta cheese. Microwave for 10 seconds. Remember, an apple a day not only keeps the doctor away, it’s delicious too. (1) medium apple TOTAL CALORIES: 522
Bon appetit – enjoy eating healthy and saving money!
(3 cups) bagged salad mix (1/2) small cucumber, sliced (5) baby carrots (1) small tomato, diced (2 oz) cauliflower (1/2 cup) rotini pasta (cooked) (1 oz) feta cheese (1 oz) balsamic vinaigrette dressing (5) medium cocktail shrimp Shelled sunflower seeds (handful) Place salad mix in a large bowl. “90 percent of
ou may have heard about this initiative in the community. From a dedicated day when everyone is encouraged to wear red, to luncheon events and other outreach efforts, Michiana is engaged in Go Red For Women. Why? Because, each year one in three women die of heart disease and stroke and the association wants millions of women across America to take heart disease personally.
women have
Would you be surprised to learn that up to 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes? That number is pretty surprising, isn’t it?
one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.”
Go Red For Women started more than 10 years ago because the American Heart Association learned that more women were dying from heart disease than men. Now, it’s the world’s largest network of women fighting to protect others from the dangers of heart disease. And it’s making a difference! More than 620,000 lives have been saved since the program has launched. But the fight is far from over. Heart disease and stroke combined kill more women than men. 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. The symptoms of heart disease can be different in women and are often silent, hidden or misunderstood. Women comprise only 24 percent of participants in heart-related studies. Women are less likely to call 911 when experiencing symptoms of a heart attack than if someone else were having a heart attack. The risk of strokes can increase with pregnancy and birth control pills.
Ways to Go Red: • Get Your Numbers: Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose. By knowing your numbers and tracking them over time, you can begin to understand what you can do to improve your health. If your blood pressure is high, for example, it increases your risk for heart attack and stroke.

• Own Your Lifestyle: Stop smoking, lose weight, be physically active and eat healthy. Smoking is one of our nation’s top causes of early death, but your lungs can begin to heal as soon as you quit. If you have too much fat — especially if a lot of it is at your waist — you're at higher risk for such health problems as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and diabetes. And you’re not alone! More than

Romancing
Your Home
By: Andrew Skipper
While February is the month that highlights romance, shouldn’t everyday be filled with love— love for a partner, children, friends and not the least of these, love for self? It’s true that holidays and momentous occasions like weddings, graduations and birthdays are times when love and gratitude can be expressed. But, life is lived in the “in-between” moments that make up every day. By “romancing your home” you can truly change your life and end up loving it…day by day. What does the term “romance your home” mean? It means creating spaces within your house that allow you to practice routines which enrich your body, mind and spirit. Think about it— what are some of the things that recharge you? By incorporating these little luxuries into your daily life, you’ll end up with a full cup, so to speak, so you can give more love to others.
Here are some tips to get you started:
Color Charge
We all have certain colors that invigorate us. Start by studying the effects colors have on our moods and then jot down colors that make you feel good. Too many people are afraid to commit to color but the good news is that paint is inexpensive and if you end up not loving a color you use on the walls, you can paint over it! If you’re still apprehensive, try accentuating your rooms with colored tablecloths, rugs, lamp shades and pillows. The key is to make your space reflect you. Remember, it’s your house, not a model home! 20

Reflect and Reinvigorate
For many people, taking a bit of time each week to pamper themselves seems overindulgent. But the reality is that when you are depleted, you have nothing to give to others. So be sure to set aside time for yourself. Make it convenient by stashing a chair massage cushion under the bed so you can pull it out and place it on a chair in the corner of the bedroom each week. While you’re enjoying your at home massage, why not indulge in a foot soak? Keep a foot bath in the bedroom closet that you can pull out and fill with warm water. Keeping items like these easily accessible will remind you that it doesn’t take much time to unwind and recharge. And if you’re a multi-tasked, the good news is that you can read your favorite book while getting a massage and a relaxing foot soak. Now that’s good time management!
“It doesn’t take much time to unwind and recharge.”
Catch Up
With busy schedules and long days, it can sometimes seem impossible to connect with the ones we love. That’s why it’s so important to carve out quality time wherever you can. Set up a cozy spot where you and your significant other can enjoy coffee together in the morning. If you’re short on time, purchase a coffee maker with a built in timer so you can pre-set it the night before. Even if you can only enjoy ten minutes of quality time together in the morning, it will start your day off on a good note and help you feel connected. If mornings don’t work for you, dedicate a half hour at the end of the work day to unwind with a cocktail or health drink of your choice while talking about each of your days. We all want to feel connected and validated, so by creating a set time and space to do this, you’ll be setting up a win/win situation.
All about Atmosphere
There are certain aspects that really transform a house into a home. They create an atmosphere that is warm, comfortable and inviting, allowing all who enter to ease into the setting. These things are candles, flowers and music. Start by putting all your overhead lights on dimmers. Then strategically sprinkle candles throughout the rooms. At the end of the day, having soft lighting and glowing candles helps create a soft atmosphere. And after all, we all look better in candle light! Also try to keep fresh flowers in the house. Whether you pick these up from a florist or at the super market, simply by having a few bouquets, you are communicating that this space is special—and this day is special—even if it’s just a Monday. Music also plays a huge role in our moods. Think about it—when you hear your favorite song, you instantly feel better, don’t you? Well why not keep that feeling alive by creating favorite playlists that you can have going in the background to set the tone for the evening?
Scent-sational
The five senses are key to creating a comfortable home—for yourself and your family. Smell is perhaps one of the strongest senses since it can easily enhance our mood and transport us. By keeping the house clean and lighting scented candles, you can create whatever mood you desire. Remember that dust holds bad smells, so be sure to sweep under furniture frequently. Reed diffusers are a great option as well for keeping your house smelling just how you want it to. SASSY | February 2015

“I Can’t Believe She Said That!” How to Deal with the Office Snark
22
FeBRUARY 2015 | SASSY
S
he may not wear a red cape or have horns on her head but she’s nothing short of evil when she lets loose with the nasty comments about everyone and everything. She’s the office snark. She (or he, since being a snark isn’t limited just to women) can come in all shapes, sizes, ages and from any background. She may work in the mailroom or in management. Her comments can be said with a smile, a smirk or a snarl. But however they’re said, they leave a nasty trail of negativity and bitterness. Here are a few tactics to deal effectively with the office snark. Of course, if his/ her comments move from general snarkiness to bullying or harassment, it’s time to call in a higher authority – start with your supervisor (unless the snark is your supervisor, then talk to the Human Resources department) and focus on how the snark is reducing productivity or professionalism in the office. And speaking of professional, keeping your professionalism at an all-time high is paramount to keeping the snark in check. Snarky behavior relies on other people stooping to his or her level.
• Ignore – Just as on the Internet, the words “don’t feed the troll” have merit in these situations as well. If the snark realizes you won’t respond, chances are good she’ll find other targets or listeners. Even if the nastiness is directed at you, don’t take it personally. Those with snarky personalities – just like bullies – go for those they think are most likely to respond to their attacks. The snark may elevate her game as a way to get your to play her game. But it you refuse to play along, she’ll have to go elsewhere for her snarky thrills.
This also means not talking about the snark when she’s not around, particularly to co-workers. The minute she hears through the office grapevine that you were bothered enough to talk to someone else, she’ll be back to her snarky ways. But if none of this works, you can always move to the next tactic…
• Disarm – If she’s not smearing someone else’s reputation or causing damage, sometimes the best tactic is to wholeheartedly agree, even if she knows you really don’t. The more over the top you are, the better. Rather than downplay the severity of leaving dirty dishes in the office sink or forgetting to rinse out the coffee pot, elevate her complaint to the highest level possible. “I think the next person who does that should be fired. Bet that would teach everyone a lesson,” then walk away leaving her to puzzle out your comment because most snarks aren’t used to having other people outdo them.
• The Lateral Move – A close cousin to disarm, the beauty of the lateral move is that by doing something unexpected – particularly by not escalating your game with the snark, you take control of the situation away from him or her. The lateral move takes thinking outside the box, while remaining absolutely professional. Here’s an example: Zelda, the office snark, is making Bethany’s life in the office miserable with her snarky comments that Bethany gets all the best assignments. Bethany, who knows Zelda isn’t nearly as competent at Excel as she is, arranges to be too busy to take the next spreadsheet assignment their boss has and suggests in front of Zelda that Zelda be given the assignment. Bethany sets herself up to win on two fronts – Zelda can’t complain that Bethany gets the best assignments any more and there’s a good possibility that Zelda will either miss the deadline for the assignment or need to ask Bethany for help.
“Her comments can be said with a smile, a smirk or a snarl. But however they’re said, they leave a nasty trail of negativity and bitterness.”
If ignoring, disarming and the lateral move don’t take the red cape and horns away from the office snark, a discussion with the human resources department may be in order. After all, you’re spending half of your waking hours at work – there’s no need for the office snark to make it miserable.

Networking By: Allison Boelcke
F
7 Tips for Introverts
ocusing on networking and building relationships is one of the most
commonly given pieces of advice for career advancement – after all, the majority of job opportunities are through referrals and “who you know.” For the introverted personality type, networking can be awkward or nerve-wracking because their strengths lie more in listening and reflecting rather than striking up conversations. Create business contacts in a way that works for your more low-key personality type with these networking tips for introverts. 24
FeBRUARY 2015 | SASSY
1.
Plan Ahead As an introvert, “working a room” may not come naturally to you; however, you can feel more in control by developing a simple strategy before you attend networking events. Come up with some introductory questions to break the ice with fellow attendees, such as asking about their work and what brings them to the event. Also, practice going over common scenarios (like if you’re the first to arrive or you’re looking for a place to sit) in your head so you don’t get flustered at the event.
2.
Give Yourself a Time Limit Don’t force yourself to go to pre-event receptions in addition to the networking event, or even to stay the entire time. This may take too much mental energy out of you and may make you want to back out of going altogether. Instead, ease yourself into networking by setting a time limit for how long you’ll stay. Whether 20 minutes or two hours, you’ll get the experience in without overwhelming yourself. As you improve your networking skills, you can increase the time.
3.
Focus on Quality Over Quantity When you’re at a networking event, don’t put pressure on yourself to meet as many people as possible. Not only can that be exhausting for an introvert, it may not be effective if you haven’t perfected your networking technique. Decide a goal of how many new people you would like to meet and focus on making the interaction as meaningful and personal as possible, rather than trying to schmooze with everyone in the room. For instance, focus on talking to one person at a time instead of trying to break into big groups.
4.
Ask for an Introduction Don’t be afraid to ask for a helping hand. Whether you’re attending an event with a colleague you already know or are interested in a possible opportunity at a place where she knows a prominent person, politely inquire if they wouldn’t mind arranging an introduction. It’s the ultimate way to transition into building a connection if you’re not comfortable with cold introductions.
5.
Be an Active Listener Often the most difficult part of conversation for introverts is not necessarily starting one – it’s sustaining it. Since introverts are so good at taking in details, use this to your advantage by using your ability to empathize in order to build a strong connection. Be prepared to ask follow-up questions to demonstrate that you’re interested in the conversation and wanting to learn more about the person.
“Ask follow-up questions to demonstrate that you’re interested in the conversation and wanting to learn more about the person.”
6.
Give Detailed Answers As an introvert, you may not be versed in the art of self-promotion and may not be comfortable talking about yourself. However, if someone strikes up a conversation with you and is asking you questions, respond with detailed answers or else the conversation will fall flat and you’ll seem uninterested. When possible, frame your responses in the manner of a story to really draw the other party in.
7.
Find Opportunities Everywhere Networking is like any other skill in that it gets easier with practice. Don’t limit yourself to industry networking events or else your progress will be slow or nonexistent. Seize the chance to work on your networking skills whenever you can in your everyday life. This could even be as simple as starting small talk when you’re in line at the copy machine with someone outside of your department. The more you do it, the easier it will be. It may seem like the business world is more suited to extroverts and their outgoing nature, but don’t underestimate the power of being an introvert. Introverts provide a much needed balance by listening and absorbing detailed information to generate ideas. Being able to network isn’t about trying to become like your extroverted colleagues – it’s about making your unique strengths visible to others and forming mutually beneficial connections. D
id you know that your awesome Facebook photo contest you are running could get your brand’s page shut down….permanently? That also goes for your “like” based entries for discounts, your page shares for promos and asking for engagement in order to participate. It’s a digital minefield out there, but luckily there are some ways to make these new rules a little easier to understand and your contests a legit in the eyes of Facebook. First things first, you cannot host a promotion on a personal page. That is rule number one. If there’s one rule you remember, it has to be this one. You can post a promotion to a custom Facebook page app/campaign or on your page’s timeline. Promotions must also include the official rules, terms and eligibility requirements and you must include a release of Facebook from each entrant in addition to stating that this promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by Facebook. You also CANNOT ask people to: • Share a Page to enter. • Like a Page to automatically enter. • Like a different Page to enter. • Like multiple Pages to enter. • Tag themselves in pictures of a new product in exchange for a chance to win a prize. • Share a contest on a friend’s Timeline to automatically receive additional entries.
If you can stay within all of those guidelines, you are open to hosting a contest on your page. It can be done, but it is time consuming and hard to manage in the space allowed by the site.
If you can abide by the above, you can also ask people to enter a contest by:
• • • • •
Liking a post to enter. Commenting on a post to enter. Posting on a Page to enter. Messaging a Page to enter. Submitting names for a new product in exchange for a chance to win a prize. • Liking as a voting mechanism.
However, remember that you still have to include the rules, terms, eligibility and a release from each participant. Since it is difficult to include all of this information in the limited space we have for a post, I highly recommending using a third party app to run promotions, which has all of this information built in, to avoid risk of having a page disabled.

Holiday Happenings Gala The 26th annual Holiday Happenings fundraising gala was held on December 6, 2014 at Windsor Park Conference Center in Mishawaka to celebrate the sanctity of life and to ensure that the many programs offered by Hannah’s House continue to make a difference. Over three hundred friends were greeted by executive director, Andrea Popielski. The evening started out with a silent auction, cocktails and dinner. The lively evening which included a card game and oral auctions were led by Emcee’s Bob Nagle of WHME TV & Radio, Sports and Jon Thompson of WSBT AM 960 Radio. Saint Nicholas was the theme of the evening which was highlighted by the amazing decorations created by the Windsor Park staff. A Saint Nicholas Day Blessing of Candy Canes was a table favor for each guest.
A highlight of the evening was the introduction of the Tree of Life Award. This award recognizes an organization or individual who has provided strength, wisdom, bounty and beauty to those served. As the inaugural recipients of this award, Hannah’s House was proud to honor the four founding partners of the organization. The honorees were Bethel College, Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, and Women’s Care Center. Hannah’s House is grateful to these partners who provided the vision for today’s reality. The need of our community to have a safe place for pregnant teens to live during their pregnancy was first recognized from the staff at Women’s Care Center. The vision of a maternity home then became a joint project of Women’s Care Center, Bethel College, St. Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka, and the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. A Board of Directors was formed from the sponsoring agencies, a home near the hospital was secured, and staff was hired. In 1993, Mother Care Home opened its doors to serve unwed teen mothers who were facing crisis pregnancies. The real success of the evening was the raising of funds for all the programs at the two homes on Fourth Street in Mishawaka. Besides guiding the women through their pregnancy and birth of their children, Hannah’s House offers the Bridge of Hope program. This nationally based program helps single women and their children support to break the cycle of poverty. The program provides rental assistance, case management, and support of a local mentoring church. Hannah’s House serves currently, approximately 25-40 women and children each year and the Bridge of Hope program currently is providing service to eight families. All the guests were very generous in response to the appeal for support after the emotional testimony given by former resident, Kathryn. When the evening concluded, all the hard work generously produced a net profit of $120,000. We would love to see you at the next Holiday Happenings on December 5, 2015 at Windsor Park.

These chefs include: Yummy Cupcakes, Lucchese’s, Centerplate, Bistro 933, Centerplate, Palais Royale, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Baker’s Bar and Grille, Olive Garden, Century Center South Bend and Life Treatment Centers. This year some silent auction items included signed memorabilia, jewelry, gift certificates and a trip for four to Disney! A live auction caps the evening with one-of-a-kind packages offered up for bid by our chefs. These singular experiences include hotel stays, weekend getaways and dining opportunities unlike any other. This event brings in a lot of different CEO’s from around South Bend/ Michiana area. We have people who attend from the area from such as: Elkhart General Hospital, Krieg Devault, Memorial Hospital, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, The Tire Rack and South Bend Tribune. With the support for the local community and businesses, we had a very successful event. We were able to raise $45,000 to go towards our mission. The Mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. With your help, we have been able to reduce the premature rate from 1 in 8 to 1 in 9, and that would not be possible without you. The success of this event had helped us to gain more access into the community to be able to better educate the moms about the risks of smoking, drinking and doing drugs while pregnant. We are also using the success from this event to help reduce the infant mortality rate in the state of Indiana by a media campaign and education throughout the state. 30
