Release the DRAB Winter Wardrobe By: Kathy Friend
Seems like during this time of year,
we work really hard at pushing through to spring. Maybe it’s the cold weather, maybe it’s from being exhausted from all the holiday cheer or perhaps the truth is that the holiday cheer ended up in our midsection. Fear not – we are ALL feeling the same way. Most winter wardrobes are havens for all things black and grey. We bundle ourselves up from head to toe to stay warm and all that bundling doesn’t do much for our silhouettes! With the new year comes new trends and new colors. Although the weather isn’t quite spring-ish yet, bring some life into a drab winter wardrobe with some key spring pieces. The best way to do that now is with jackets!
Cropped Jackets
Shorter jackets will be a big trend this Spring. When adding this silhouette into your wardrobe, be sure that you balance the boxy-feeling of this jacket with form fitting pieces underneath. Many cropped jackets have a very glam Chanel feel; wear this style in an unexpected way: jeans and a white t-shirt and layer with gobs of jewelry. Instant chic! Make sure the length of the jacket is flattering to your body shape. Rule of thumb is the shorter the jacket, the more flattering to the hip area. Remember, the point where the jacket hits your torso is where all the attention will be in your outfit. In other words, make sure THAT is where you WANT people to be looking!
Bomber Jackets
This style will be a big trend this Spring. Think “grown up baseball jacket” or “flight jacket meets a bolt of silk fabric.” A sophisticated fabric takes this sporty cut to a whole new level of cool. I love this look with a slouchy trouser and a sky-high stiletto. Keep the layers you wear with the bomber monochromatic. Let the bomber be THE statement of your look. My favorite take is a feminine flirty dress (think ruffles and lace) with a rugged leather bomber.
8 January 2014 | SASSY
Car Coats
Car coats. You know, the very lady-like overcoat that hits at your knee. The trend will be a swing coat with no collar. If you are petite, this might not be the best look for you. Car coats can be a bit overwhelming for a slight frame. The length of this style coat should be the same length of your skirts and dresses. For most women, the most flattering length will be mid-knee.
ONE THING TO INVEST IN FOR SPRING
A crisp white blouse. All the design houses are showing this key wardrobe staple as a fundamental layering piece to a ton of looks this spring. To be honest, if you don’t have a good white blouse in your closet already, it’s about time to get one!

DETOXIFYING Your Skin From the Inside-Out Rejuvenating your skin from the damage that was done during the holidays! By: Bethza Seminario
T
he holidays are always an enjoyable time to catch up with the ones that are special in your life. As a true Peruvian family, we love to get together on these special occasions, enjoy each other, dance and eat a little too much.
It is difficult to eat healthy during the holidays when you are surrounded by delicious treats that you don’t consume on a daily basis. Since it’s the beginning of a New Year, many of you have decided that your resolution will consist of changing your eating lifestyle. How does eating affect your skin? Almost everyone has heard the phrase, “you are what you eat” and the realization is it’s very true.
Drinking enough water, ingesting enough greens into your diet and limiting your cocktails will help decrease breakouts, dryness, flakiness, extreme oiliness and so much more. One popular trend that people are trying is detoxifying diets. Detoxifying diets are to help rejuvenate your skin and body by getting rid of the toxins that you ingested. Many of these diets are very expensive and kind of messy!
HONEY
One item that is in almost every household that you can use to help detoxify your skin is honey. Honey is a highly important ingredient in skin care and can help boost facial masks because of the anti-bacterial and hydrating components. There is several other food products that you can mix honey with to make facial masks.
Pineapple
Pineapples contain enzymes that can help with your skin’s elasticity and will also keep you hydrated. This fruit eliminates damaged or dead skin cells and leaves you with a more radiant and clear face. Pineapples can diminish sun and age spots along with fine lines. Creating the Mask: Blend pineapple until it is in small pieces. Then add honey to the mixture. Apply to your face and leave the mask on for a minimum of 15 minutes. Then gently rinse off of your face. 12 January 2014 | SASSY
Papaya
Papaya contains enzymes that can help with dark spots. This fruit works as a soft exfoliater which will help give a clearer complexion. Papaya is full of vitamins, especially vitamin C. Creating the Mask: Smash small pieces of the papaya and mix with the honey. Then apply it all over your face. Leave the mask on for at least 15 minutes and rinse.
Beets
Beets are roots that contain a high amount of vitamin A, which can hydrate skin. Beets are rich in antioxidants, are an antiinflammatory and detoxifies. Research shows that beets can also help eliminate the chances of getting cancer. Creating the Mask: Cut the beets into small pieces and blend. Mix the beets with honey or almond oil and apply the mask to your face. Leave the mask on for a minimum of 20 minutes and then rinse with warm water.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is found in many esthetic products because of its natural anti-aging, soft exfoliator and acne fighting enzymes. This hot breakfast cereal can keep your stomach from feeling hungry and also help improve your skin. Creating the Mask: Mix together the oatmeal, egg whites and honey together. Then apply the mask all over your face and neck. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes and then rinse with warm water.
Always keep in mind that it is important to know exactly what you want to target on your skin. Hormonal and weather changes affect each person’s skin differently and can impact its appearance. Experimenting and discovering what type of masks work best for you is not only beneficial for your skin but also fun! SASSY | january 2014

Wine
101
It’s the New Year
and time to try new things. One new thing you could try is either going to a wine tasting or hosting one yourself. Some people fear wine and believe it’s too “out of their league” when wine is just about finding balance. Finding the balance of what you like and dislike will help you determine which wines are best suited for you. Sure, there are things to be educated on when it comes to wine but if you stick to the basics you can’t lose. First things first, opening a bottle of wine isn’t always as easy as you think. Here are a few simple rules to follow that will help eliminate the risk of the cork to break. Start by taking the wine opener and look at the cork screw area. It has five rungs on it. Place it on the cork in the middle and hold the bottle at an angle in your hand. For beginners, keep it steady on a table. Twist it down only four rungs of the cork screw. 14 January 2014 | SASSY
If you don’t go far enough it won’t grasp the cork well enough to get it out. If you go too far it will pierce the cork and you can risk getting sediment from it in the wine. Once the cork is removed, you are good to go.
Pouring the wine
Now, it is important to know how to pour the wine and what type of glass to pour it into. Pour gently into the glass and twist it slightly at the end of the pour. This is to help lessen the chances of the wine to drip. It’s always handy to have a cloth napkin available to wipe the bottle in between pours. Also, it’s best to not let the bottle touch the glass while pouring it. Make sure when pouring you only fill the glass half full. That will leave plenty of room to swirl the wine to help mix the aromas and flavors with oxygen. The exception is with Champagne flutes. Those can be filled closer to the top.
Choosing the Proper Glass
Choosing the proper glass will accentuate the aroma and flavor from the wine. The rules, with glasses, are as follows: Only buy wine glasses you can afford and buy more glasses than you think you will need. Consider buying glasses that are of great style or one that can house both red and white wines. Choose glasses that are
By: Elizabeth Carris
clear and smooth and avoid those with a fancy design. This way you can show off the wine’s depth and richness of color. Also, make sure the glasses have a long enough stem to give you something to hold on to. The best way to hold the glass is at the stem because if you hold it by the bowl, the warmth from your hand can warm up the wine which in turn can change the taste. A well designed wine glass can handle either red or white wines. It should have a generous sized bowl to give the wine ample room to evolve. Closer to the rim the bowl, it should narrow to help force the aromas to the nose.
Smelling the Wine
How do you smell a wine correctly? Start by swirling the wine in the glass. Swirling aerates the wine. As far as actually smelling the wine, gently put the glass to your nose and breathe in. Though contrary to popular belief, a long inhale may not be the best way to achieve the best smell. The best way is to take a series of short quick smells to maximize the aroma.
Tasting the Wine
Each wine’s taste is completely different. A wine’s body is described as light, medium or full. Imagine the weight of skim milk, whole milk and half and half in your mouth and those would be
comparable to the body of a wine. A wine’s mouthfeel is the tactile impression that it leaves in your mouth. Fabrics are often used to describe a mouthfeel, for example, “smooth as silk” and “as soft as velvet.” You must roll the wine around your mouth to truly access the wines texture. If you swallow too soon, you will miss it. Wine has four basic flavors; sweet, sour, bitter and salty. Salty rarely occurs but it is an option for some people. Describing and finding the flavors of a wine isn’t as easy as you may think but there are some basics to go by. Flavors associated with white wines are often linked to fruits like apple, grapefruit, pear and lemon or lime. Some other flavors include butter or cream which would include caramel. Nuts or grains and spices like cinnamon or cloves are some recognizable flavors. You can even have the taste of flowers including honeysuckle or rose and even the taste of grass, stone or minerals. Barreled aromas will give you that vanilla or toast aroma flavor.

Red wines will have flavors or aromas of fruits that include black berries, black currant, blueberry or cherry. They can have a vegetable flavor or aroma of bell peppers or mushrooms. Chocolate, cocoa and coffee are common words used to describe red wine tastes. Licorice, smoke, tobacco, cedar, gravel and leather are some others. But, in the end, the finish is what will stay with you. Hold the wine in your mouth, swallow and breathe out with your mouth closed. If you can still taste and smell the wine, it is considered to have a long finish. If there isn’t much left, then it’s considered to be a short finish. In the end, wine tasting should be about the thrill of the individual taste. Try one wine or try ten but the key is to just try them and soon you will be mastering the art of wine tasting and having fun doing it.
Cheers to the New Year! Sassy-Boom1-13.indd 1

How to Work from Your
Passion By: Meagan Church
Who doesn’t desire to use their talents and passions to make a difference in the community and world around them? Deb DeFreeuw, Amy Cooper Collier and Jeanna Tarwacki are all doing just that. These three ladies share their experiences of working from their passions and share their advice for all sassy women out there who want to do likewise. always had a passion for drawing, colors and packaging textiles. I went to Kendall College of Art & Design and never looked back. What encouraging words can you give others to do likewise?
I think sometimes we look at what we think is ‘practical’ and what expectations others might have for us. Be true to yourself and follow your passion and the rewards will follow.
Deb DeFreeuw,
President/certified-brand strategist, Force 5 How did you get to the point of working from your passion?
I took a leap of faith. There were other career paths I considered. I studied marine biology my first year of college, then I worked as a legal secretary when I was considering a career in law. Sometimes working from your passion requires taking a leap of faith and stepping outside your comfort zone. Why should a woman take that leap?
Most things require a leap of faith, including marriage, kids, etc. You should take that leap of faith because it will help you grow as a person even if you fail because we also learn from the failures. One of my favorite sayings is “you can't discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”
Amy Cooper Collier, Executive director, Girls on the Run Michiana How did you get to the point of working from your passion?
When the opportunity to launch a local Girls on the Run council presented itself four years ago, I had just moved back to Indiana, had two young children, was
surrounded by a house full of unpacked boxes and had just started working another part-time job. The timing wasn't good, but seeing clearly the kind of difference I knew I could make in the world, something inside me said, "Yes! Find a way to make this happen!" However, I also believe working from your passion is sometimes less about the specific work being done and more about the positive attitude, integrity and energy a woman can bring to the workplace when she recognizes the opportunity she has to make a real difference in the world. I've tapped into my passion as a middle-school teacher, family counselor, ropes course/team building facilitator, and now as I work to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident through a fun after-school program that creatively integrates running. What we do isn't always as important as how we do it. What encouraging words can you give others to do likewise?

to give them the strength and boldness to step into that identity and calling. Sometimes working from your passion requires taking a leap of faith and stepping outside your comfort zone. Why should a woman take that leap?
Life is so much more fulfilling if you spend it pursuing what you love! God has given each of us gifts and callings and He's not going to abandon us when we pursue what He's calling us to do. I have my own stories of great success and great failure when I've pursued different passion areas. It didn't always look or turn out the way that I expected, but walking through those experiences with God, friends and family have only made me stronger.

Q:
When I’m in meetings with my team, I seem to get tongue-tied. This wouldn’t be such a big deal if I weren’t leading the meetings! I know what I want to say going in, but when it comes time to say anything that will bring up conflict, I tend to chicken out. Help!
I feel like my whole day at work is spent sending and answering emails. Seriously, I can’t seem to get on top of the workload because all my time is spent staring at the computer screen. How can I regain control of my workflow?
Charrise Says:
Charrise Says:
A: Speaking out can sometimes be challenging. As the leader of the meeting, your team members are counting on you to provide information, and facilitate the conversations that need to happen. In order for them to trust you, they have to believe what you’re saying. If you are not saying something that needs to be said, their trust for you will erode. You’re right to consider this a big deal. It’s also your job as a leader to create a safe place for people to express their feelings. If you are not saying what’s on your mind, that does not set a very good example for them to express themselves. As their leader, you must be willing to handle conflict by having difficult conversations. One tip might be to rehearse in advance. Think through what you’re going to say and how you’re going to say it. Be sure you’ve thought through the logic of it as well because if your belief in it is shaky, that will definitely make you deliver it less assertively. Once you know what you’re going to say, imagine the responses you might get and decide what your comeback would be. The more prepared you are for the conversation the easier it will be for you to be effective in facilitating it. If this is a theme for you, you might consider inquiring into your level of selfesteem. There are lots of resources available for you to explore ways to increase your self-esteem. If you’re seriously interested in continuing a leadership path, improving your self- esteem will be critical.

Email can definitely be a time sucker. It’s a mistake to think that you don’t have control of your day, however. You are simply choosing to allow email to take priority over everything else. It’s best to create a strategy for this because email is not likely to go away. As so much business is done this way, you’ll want to create a structure and a set of parameters for addressing the information that shows up in your mailbox. If your inbox is like mine, many email messages are either junk that you’ve subscribed to or copies which require no action. One great trick is to UNSUBSCRIBE. I know it sounded like something you’d want to read when you subscribed and how much peace does it cost you to have it show up? Commit to unsubscribing to a certain number every day. Another trick is to mark the important ones that need attention and file the other ones away for later review. This takes some of the overwhelmed feeling away by choosing which ones get your priority attention. Sometimes it’s best to stop an email chain by addressing the situation in person of those involved. It’s pretty likely that some of your email would be more efficiently handled by a quick meeting. At any rate, you DO have control over all this. I’m sure you can think of ways to conquer the email monster if you’re willing to spend the time creating your unique strategy. Good luck!
Heather Bachman: Checking In With
Sassy’s Cover Girl Cancer Warrior By: Jessica Haviland
In September of 2013, we were honored to bring you the courageous story of Heather Bachman, a mother of two who battled an aggressive form of breast cancer called Triple-Negative. Heather opted for a double mastectomy and underwent chemotherapy. She credits her mother, whom battled breast cancer herself and later passed away from a difference cause, for being the guardian angel that helped Heather detect her cancer early enough for treatment. We will be following Heather on her journey to recovery every month here in Sassy and if you missed her story in our past September issue, please visit www.MichianaSassy.com to read it.
T
he holiday season is always a joyful and exciting time for everyone. Christmas decorations were placed around the home, lights lined the outside and the smell of fresh cut Christmas trees lingered in the air. At least for some of us, that is what we were doing a few weeks prior to Christmas but it was a different story for Heather Bachman leading up to the holidays.

The Scare:
The last time we met up with Heather, she informed us that she was going to have cosmetic surgery done to her breasts to replace the nipples and add fat graphs to help eliminate any rippling. “I went in (to her cosmetic surgeon) to see if my implant shifted. When they were looking around, they actually found a mass on my liver. Immediately my doctor wanted me to see my oncologist to get an MRI test done,” Heather said. For anyone to hear that there is a mass in their body is a scary feeling but for Heather it only meant to her that the cancer came back. “For a week, I was walking around thinking that it did,” Heather recalls. “To be honest, I was terrified that it was back.” A torturous week passed before Heather was able to get any confirmation on whether the cancer returned. “My oncologist informed me that I had a Liver Hemogenia, which is like a blood cist,” said Heather. “There is nothing really they can do to treat it. Most women don’t even realize if they even had one.”
Moving Forward To The New Year:
After the health scare that made Heather’s world stop spinning once again, it made her realize that life is so fragile and anything can happen in a moment of seconds. “I appreciate things more since that week than I have in quite some time,” she said. With the feeling of relief and joy, Heather and her family are looking forward to this New Year and what it will bring. “I appreciate everything with my kids and my family. I appreciate my own body. You can’t take things for granted,” she said. “I look at my birthday and even New Year’s differently. Before, I use to worry about my birthday and getting a year older but now I think ‘it’s my birthday and I made it!’ New Years is a new year for me and I take the lessons I learned that year and leave it at that.”
One important aspect that Heather hopes to move forward with is for others to start seeing her as “Heather” once again. “I’m ready for people to see my family and say ‘oh, look at your girls’ and not say ‘oh, look at your hair’ or ‘how are you feeling,’” says Heather. “Everything got lost and scrambled for a while. Now, I’m finding my footing again and getting back to the way I use to be.”
A New Year, A New Resolution:
Like everyone else, Heather’s New Year’s resolution is to start working out and to be healthy. “I actually gained weight from the chemo,” she said. “I think I have lost muscle and gained weight instead. I live on a farm so I need to get myself back into shape.” The year 2013 was a strong and hard road for Heather to walk down but she proved not just to herself but to many other’s that she can get through anything. “I learned to calm myself when I hear news that may not sound so great,” Heather said. “I have to do that because I know that I cannot calm others.” Heather is one of millions in the world who has been put to battle with cancer. “Cancer doesn’t mean a death sentence anymore,” she said. “I always described cancer as a huge wind and it will be the strongest wind anyone will ever walk through. If you don’t bend, it can break you.” But Heather proved not just to all of us but to herself that not only is she strong willed but limber enough to let that wind pass right on by.

This Month's Question:
“
I find that the stress of managing my professional life and my personal life are pulling me apart. Wherever I am, I feel I should be somewhere else, that I am needed everywhere at once. What can I do?
”
Answer:
Here are some ideas to ease the stress: •Breathe. When feeling overwhelmed, pausing to take a slow deep breath actually clears our mind and reduces anxiety. •Recognize you can’t have it all. •Clarify your values. Is having dinner together with the family more or less important than preparing a home cooked meal? Is having a clean house more or less important than quality time with the spouse and children? What can you say NO to at work? •Set aside time to be fully present at home. Bedtime, dinnertime, homework time and play time are all important

building blocks to the foundation of a balanced home. Be clear with your boundaries. Turn your work phone off in the evenings and mornings when you are focused on the family. •Be focused at work. Prioritize. Learn to let family members take care of themselves or each other. Allow children to experience the consequences of forgetting their homework or lunch. Natural consequences are some of our best teachers. •Give yourself a break. Take time for you. Identify things that recharge your battery and then make these items nonnegotiable once a day or once a week.
Answer: Great question! The feeling of being “pulled apart” and the feeling of “need to be in two places at the same time” lets us know we’re existing
In survival mode. “Instinctively our bodies
on a cold winter day, select...
perceive this situation as “life threatening” and our body/ mind responds as if we’re being attacked by lions.
”
Our bodies respond by dumping stress hormones and shutting down higher brain centers so we can’t think clearly. Our body/mind is in fight/flight/freeze mode and this is not a healthy (or comfortable) way to live. Becoming aware of this activation is key. So, how can we upgrade this old app of survival? I go to my heart. It has the ability to get our brain, body, and emotions back in sync. First, I drop down to the area of my heart. I focus breathing in and out of the heart and slowly synchronizing the nervous system. Then, I activate a positive feeling – this stops stress hormones and activates resiliency hormones. A balanced physiology provides access to our higher brain centers allowing us to perceive the situation from a different viewpoint. Out of survival mode and back into my authentic self then solutions arise from this enhanced state.

The Woman Behind The Centre, P.C. By: Chaunie Brusie
From the high fashion streets of New York City to the Michiana area, Lain Ruch Downs, the Executive Director of The Centre, P.C. shares how she started a medical practice with her husband, Dr. Ronald K. Downs, a board certified plastic surgeon, all while raising a family centered around traditional values.
W
hen we spoke to Lain Downs, the Executive Director of The Centre, P.C., with locations in Elkhart and Mishawaka, she was hesitant to talk to us at first. “I don’t normally do this sort of thing,” she laughed. “I don’t want to talk about me. I want to talk about all of the wonderful people I work with!” Humble as she may be, Lain’s story is one that embodies everything that Sassy is all about—serving women in the community with grace, elegance and passion. In the story of The Centre, P.C., as is the case with most things in life, behind every great man is one heck of a woman running the show.
A Background in Banking:
Lain, who basically built The Centre P.C. almost literally from the ground-up, had a rather unconventional start into the world of plastic and reconstructive surgeries. Lain had her start in banking. “I was a private international banker in New York City for Banco de Credito del Peru,” Lain remembers, where her ability to speak conversational Spanish made her perfect for the position. “I had a window office at 52nd & Park Ave and it was great. I thought we would never move, that I had really ‘arrived.’ International banking was incredible.” After ten years of banking in the Big Apple (and 15 years of marriage), Lain and her husband moved to Chicago where Dr. Downs completed his Plastic Surgery Residency at Rush University Medical Center. While there, the medical director of the Plastic Surgery Program asked Lain to manage one of his senior attendings in plastic surgery’s office. “They said, ‘Do you understand money?’ and I said, ‘yes,’ and that’s how I entered the world of plastic surgery administration,” Lain recalls. “I was afraid as I knew nothing about healthcare but I thought it would be interesting.” 22 January 2014 | SASSY
Making the Move:
And interesting it must have been because she’s been at it for more than twenty-three years! The real question though is how Lain and Dr. Downs found their way from the big city to Elkhart? “At the end of his residency in Chicago, [my husband and I] decided we liked the values of the Midwest,” Lain explains. Although the couple’s two daughters hadn’t been born yet, Lain and her husband knew that they wanted to raise a family together in a traditional family-oriented community. “We loved Chicago,” Lain says, “But we didn’t want to be right in the city.” When the couple came across an opportunity with Elkhart General Hospital for a plastic surgeon, they knew they had to take action. “Ron wanted to start his own practice,” Lain remembers. “I said, ‘I’ll give you one year and then I’m going to do my own thing—that was 21 years ago!” she says with a laugh. While continuing to work full-time at her original job as a plastic surgery administrator and still living in Chicago, Lain built her husband’s new practice from the ground up while leasing a space still in the construction phase. She oversaw and directed the entire construction from another state.
All in a Day’s Work:
Today, The Centre P.C. has expanded to include two locations, one in Elkhart and one in Mishawaka, to better serve the needs of the community. As the Executive Director of The Centre, Lain’s role includes “anything and everything!” From meeting with the professionals behind the scenes to strategic planning to making decisions about the practice, every day is busy for Lain. “I multi-task like no other,” Lain says. (And she’s not kidding! She was giving instructions to her CPA on the phone during our interview!) “It’s very challenging right now because of the changes occurring in healthcare. I used to think banking was challenging.”
“My primary role is to make sure things go as smoothly as possible,” she continues. And because she works all day in the office with her husband and his partner, Dr. Patrick Viscardi, Lain jokes a little saying, “I always say I have two husbands during the day now!”
Meeting the Needs of Women:
As a full-service and comprehensive professional plastic surgery office, The Centre not only offers an on-site board certified plastic surgeons, their own state-licensed ambulatory surgery center and rehabilitative services for both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeries but they also offer clients a relaxing “escape” in their Medical Rejuvenation Spa. The spa offers non-surgical treatment options with an expert team made up of licensed aestheticians, certified massage therapists, licensed cosmetologists and a certified medical aesthetic nurse. Licensed professionals provide all the treatments in the spa making The Centre stand out in its dedication to combining medicine with a beauty-centered focus. “We wanted to offer everything all under one roof,” Lain says. While some may view plastic surgery as vain, Lain looks at the work The Centre does in a very different way. “I think we only have one life and if you look in the mirror and have the ability and the means to change something that is affecting you, then why not?” she says matter-of-factly. Beyond the cosmetic services that The Centre provides, Lain has a special passion for the reconstructive surgeries that her team takes part in each and every day, especially for women affected by breast cancer. “All of us have loved ones affected by breast cancer,” Lain says quietly. “It’s truly a journey and ours is the positive part of the journey. We’re going to bring you back to a state of whole.” The Centre also offers occupational therapy following certain surgeries, like those involving the hands or in women with breast cancer who have experienced extensive tissue scarring. “We can work on those areas without surgery and give them wonderful, magical results,” Lain says proudly. Lain also prides her Center on its dedication to treating women holistically, beginning with a consultation for each client who walks through the door. “The consultation is huge,” Lain explains. “In some places in the country you consult with a coordinator; here you consult with the surgeon.” With that one-on-one attention and dedication to helping each woman, Lain affirms that in some cases, The Centre works to help women see that beauty runs more than skin deep. “Do we turn people away if we feel like their interests aren’t in line with realistic expectations?” Lain says. “Absolutely.”
A Beautiful Future:
Lain sees a continued need for the services that The Centre provides to women and in the community going forward in the future. “It’s funny because I never had a manicure until I was married,” Lain explains. “But now, there’s a lot we can do to stave off the effects of old age and care for ourselves in a way we have not had the technology to do and it’s only going to get better.” So does Lain have any plans to take advantage of The Centre’s services herself? “When I can, I will take advantage of injectables, certainly,” Lain asserts. “I have sensitive skin and I love our products. I need to have some laser work done but right now there is no time. I feel like the shoemaker’s daughter! I will, though, absolutely go under the knife. Let’s just say gravity hasn’t been kind to me! I too have the desire to look and feel better” Lain is proud of the work she does with The Centre and although she recognizes and respects each woman’s right to privacy and secrecy—a mainstay of The Centre’s operating philosophy— she sees that more and more today women are not ashamed to take steps for their own health and well-being and share the outcome with others.
Community-oriented
Although Lain and her husband are both native East Coasters (she was born and raised in upstate New York, while her husband hails from Philadelphia), the couple identifies strongly with the values of the Midwest. “The reason we moved here is because we had grown up with strong value systems and we felt those values were prevalent here in the Midwest,” she explains. Lain also found the “entrepreneurial” spirit of Elkhart to match her own drive and motivation. “It was perfect,” she says simply. “It felt like a fit. It’s very exciting to create and to see something grow; to know that you were capable of doing that.” Beyond her enthusiasm for Elkhart’s entrepreneurial opportunities, Lain cherishes the opportunity to get involved within her community. “I am very pro-community,” Lain states. “I go grocery shopping with everyone at the end of the day. I give to my church, home and professional communities. I think that’s huge and I really try very hard to be active in the community.” Beyond her involvement in both the St. Joe and Elkhart communities, Lain was chair of the Elkhart Chamber and also the chair of the Plastic Surgery Administrative Association nationally. More recently, she co-chaired the Still Dancing in Elkhart for the Elkhart Samaritan Center and prior to that she chaired the Faithful Lives Dinner for The Foundation of Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center alongside her husband. And part of the reason that Lain knows the importance of giving back and getting involved is her own family; Lain and her husband have two daughters, both teenagers, aged 18 and 13. But don’t feel bad for this busy and involved mother of two, she wouldn’t have her life any other way. “I always have worked full-time,” Lain says. “I wouldn’t know what to do if I didn’t.” Bringing an impeccable sense of New York fashion, an entrepreneurial spirit and raising a family with traditionallycentered values would be impressive enough for any Sassy woman’s resume but there is one secret that helps Lain balance it all. “I called The Centre [that name] because it was the ‘center’ of my world,” she says simply.

“Twenty-one years ago if someone saw you coming to our doorstep, you might get talked about; now our culture of wellness and self-care has changed that,” Lain says. SASSY | january 2014

New Wishes for a New Year
By: Shay McFarland
I
miss my daughter. I miss our closeness while we shared a cup of coffee together. I miss the crazy amount of time she’d be locked up in the bathroom trying new hair and makeup styles. I miss her gut-wrenching laughter that filled the room and melted away the frustrations of the day. I just miss her light. Last fall, my daughter Meg asked if we could cook dinner together for her 23rd birthday. She wanted it to be just the four of us, me, her brother Ash and her fiancé Doug, in a small intimate family dinner. “Honey,” I asked her softly over the phone, “How exactly are we going to do this?” Meg now lives in San Diego and my current budget doesn’t allow for flights to California for any occasion. “Mom, we will FaceTime of course!” she replied with joy. Okay, game on. I consider myself a tech-savvy 40-something woman and I really do love gadgets and all things Internet. But this was new for all of us.
"And there I was, having dinner with my grown children, my wish having come true." The time zone thing could be worked out, we decided, as long as we didn’t mind eating late. The dinner choice was easy, spaghetti on both ends of the smart phones. And the day, well that was already set. But listening to my kids chat easily over their iPhones as if we were all back together again, no one could have prepared me for that. They didn’t see me cry. I choked it back as fast as the tears tried to flow. It wasn’t the fact that they were both now in their 20’s. It wasn’t the fact that Ash and I were about to move into our own apartments, he with his girlfriend and me on my own. It wasn’t that Meg had moved to California three years ago. It wasn’t that the young woman in that tiny screen was so beautiful I could hardly breathe while I looked at her. 24 January 2014 | SASSY
It was that everything had changed. More than ten years ago the world had turned upside down on us; it was right after Christmas in fact. We still have some trouble feeling joy that time of year. We gave up hoping for their father to change. That night he spent in jail is not on his record because he went through all the classes that were asked of him. But that night of terror was imprinted on our souls. I made the right choice by calling the Sheriff. I made the right choice by divorcing him soon after. He never did stop drinking.

My favorite memory of that time is lying out on the trampoline late at night. The three of us would snuggle together in sleeping bags making wishes on shooting stars. We lived under the Milky Way on a road called Stardust Trail in Flagstaff, Arizona. We’d make wishes for everyone we knew and people that we didn’t. When we ran out of ideas, we’d make wishes for the whole world. Ash asked me one time, “Mommy, do they really come true?” but it was Meg that replied. She told him, “Well of course they do, but you have to believe and know they will for it to work.”

And there I was, having dinner with my grown children, my wish having come true. They were strong, healthy young adults. Both of them were in solid, wonderful relationships. We had faced so many challenges but we just never gave up. And now we were close again. This little gadget brought us all together for a family birthday dinner across 2,158 miles. Meg started college in August and will be getting a degree in business. Ash will become the firefighter he’s always hoped to be. I will keep working full-time and plugging away towards my own degree. I had set aside everything extra to raise them myself until I went back to college three years ago. But I know it all started that day in September when we made new wishes together. We were a long way from Stardust Trail. This time we wished for Meg to have a wonderful year filled with balance and joy while she kept making her dreams come true. Those wishes for the whole world are still out there made by pure hearts with big dreams. Look to the stars and believe, know and then make it so.

5 Tips SASSY

for On-the-Go
Healthy Living By: Meagan Church
Life is hectic. There are so many things you want to do, need to do or should do but who has the time for
it all? No one. But, when it comes to things like taking care of your health, making the time matters. Which is why I spoke with Ashley Johns, health/fitness entrepreneur and creator of FierceForwardforLife.com. Ashley understands the struggles and what it takes to get healthy and stay that way. A few years ago, she decided to get in shape. She lost 40 pounds and became a Bodybuilding.com spokesmodel. Since then, she has been inspiring and coaching others to live healthier, happier and more intentional lives through her personal training business Fierce Forward. Ashley shares a few tips for healthy living:
Stock your car.
Stock your car with water bottles and bring healthy snacks with you when you're on the go. My favorite snacks to pack that are fast and easy are nuts, protein bars, Larabars, cheese sticks and beef jerky (placed in a protective cooler, when necessary). This way you leave your house prepared and you won't be inclined to get fast food in a pinch.
Pack your gym bag the night before. After a long day’s work, it's easy to put off going to the gym, but if you have your gym bag packed and with you in the front seat, coupled with a quick snack from your snack pack, you'll be much more likely to hit the gym.
Know your fast food alternatives.
Be aware of the healthy fast food alternatives available to you, such as Starbucks Perfect Oatmeal or Greek yogurt, Panera Bread's Secret Low Calorie Menu, Subway with mostly fresh ingredients and so many more.
Breathe.
A lot of people underestimate the power of breathing. When you're going from the place to place, from meeting to meeting and feeling the stress on your shoulders, take three deep breaths, exhaling slowly to release the stress, anger and frustration you're feeling in the moment. Work daily on letting go of that which bothers you and just breathe through it. 26 January 2014 | SASSY
You only get one opportunity at the first repair. Precision. That is what defines a quality repair. From minor detailing to major collision repair, Basney Collision Center offers a solution to every concern you have with your vehicle. With years of experience and training, our expert technicians utilize the latest in repair techniques and equipment to restore your vehicle to like new condition.
Date yourself.
And lastly, put a spot for you on your to-do list or make a date with yourself. As women, we spend so much time and energy on others, it's also important to make time for yourself. Make sure you're at the top of your to-do list! As final words of encouragement, Ashley said, “As women on the go, we're prepared, organized, efficient and dedicated to what we do and the people we meet, so let's make sure to be all those things to our self first and foremost, so we are our best selves.”

Flourish Boutique How
Is Using Social Media to Flourish
By: Cyndy Searfoss
F
lourish Boutique in Granger and social media came of age together, so it’s only fitting that the boutique has taken a savvy approach to using platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to grow. In fact, the boutique’s philosophy that social media allows it to make a direct connection with customers who shop online rather than in person has expanded its presence beyond its Granger storefront.
The boutique is the life-long dream of owner Vanessa Cooreman Smith. She opened the shop in 2008 with her husband, Stephen. The shop’s launch was the confluence of years of planning, pulling together her passion for art and fashion with the experience she gained working in her family’s land development and real estate business. Flourish focuses on the one-of-kind fashion find, with an emphasis on clothing, accessories and jewelry that have a flair for the extraordinary. 28 January 2014 | SASSY
Social media marketing has proved to be a great match for the shop’s aesthetic appeal to its customers. According to Brianne Suckow, Flourish’s Director of Sales and Development, “Our items are very visually appealing. And Facebook is extremely image based, so that’s made it very easy for us to share images of new inventory with customers.”
A multi-dimensional approach
After beginning with Facebook in 2009, Flourish has expanded to Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and YouTube. As Suckow noted, “Social media is constantly evolving. We use each platform in a different way. For example, we list new products on Facebook multiple times a day.” She went to explain, “We always list a link to the item on our website so customers can easily purchase from the comfort of their own home. Customers can even purchase these items directly on Facebook by commenting! We also use Instagram for more of our behind the scenes content or sneak peeks. We offer style tips and advice on our blog. Different platforms reach a different demographic or customer base. So if we know a certain platform is dominated by high school girls, we’ll post more images of Miss Me jeans on that platform.” The boutique’s Facebook page recently featured a collection of chevron-patterned tunic dresses, advice on wearing sequined sweaters, boots and accessories galore. By commenting the word “sold,” their size, email address and whether they’d like the item shipped or for pick up at the boutique, customers can purchase right from Flourish’s Facebook page.
Integrating social media
An important part of the shop’s marketing success has been its ability to integrate social media with more traditional marketing and advertising methods. According to Suckow, “we try to always put, ‘Find us on Facebook,’ along with the Facebook icon in all of our print media. It's a great way to reach people on different platforms, with different demographics. We receive new inventory every day, so we list our new arrivals in all our social media outlets. We also use some of the images that we post on Facebook by printing them out to post in the store. This allows a customer to easily find something in store that she saw on Facebook.”
Pin it, baby!
When asked about Flourish’s greatest social media success story, Suckow was quick to point out the quantifiable results for their Pinterest campaign. “It can be difficult to measure the ROI on social media efforts, so it’s very rewarding when you can see quantifiable results such as new followers, increased traffic from Pinterest and direct sales. We spent time tracking the success of the timing of pinning our images as well as the type of image. Our work paid off when our images started to go viral! We had a pin that got re-pinned almost a thousand times, which resulted in selling out of that particular item in one day. Using different analytics, we are able to track exactly how much traffic from our website is directly linked to Pinterest.”
Customer relations
Perhaps just as important, Flourish uses social media to close the loop with customers – getting feedback from them about what they like or what they may be looking for and providing exceptional customer service. “There are many perks to being a fan or follower of Flourish's social sites including exclusive behind the scenes action, sneak peeks of new arrivals, Facebook-exclusive offers, style tips and advice, contests and sweepstakes, fan voting and polls,” Suckow noted. It doesn’t take more than a browse through customer posts and reviews on the boutique’s page determine just how successful Flourish has been at the social media game. SASSY | january 2014

Roses,
Roses, Roses... Interesting Valentine’s Day Facts: According to the Society of American Florist, most roses sold in the U.S. are imported from Columbia or Ecuador. California is the leader for all other cut flowers. Each type of rose has a “shelf life.” The variety of the roses you purchase will determine how long they will live. 200 million roses will be sold this Valentine’s Day in America. The wholesale price for roses double starting the first of February.
How to Save Money on Valentine’s Day: • Avoid ordering from a national floral website. They keep the shipping and handling fee and your end value is less. • You can still shop at your local florist if you want to send something out of town. Make sure you avoid any transfer or wire fees. • Order your flowers early. Some shops offer discounts with early orders. • Deliver earlier in the week and let the recipient enjoy them longer. There is no guaranteed time for delivery on the Valentines Day.
15% of women buy for themselves and 36% of women will send flowers to their spouse.
Want Something Different?
We deliver: • Candy Baskets • Gourmet & Fruit Baskets • Balloons, Gifts and More!

Happily and comfortably improve your smile with Invisalign! Invisalign is the clear way to straighten teeth without braces, using aligners. Aligners are removable and virtually invisible, which means you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing; and you can still eat and drink what you want. Also, you can brush and floss normally to maintain healthy gums and teeth; and there are no wires, metal or brackets to cause mouth abrasions. Cleanings are quicker and easier than with traditional orthodontics. Many of our patients had never considered traditional braces but are now happily and comfortably improving their smiles with Invisalign.
Over 400 years of combined experience in Orthodontics for children and adults! If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, you’re about to take the first step toward better dental health and a smile that will last a lifetime. Cheaper, Better, Faster:
Over 2,000 Tips and Tricks to Save You Time and Money Every Day by Mary Hunt
Reviewed by Linda Hickman, Reference/Media Librarian, Bittersweet Branch of the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library Cheaper, Better, Faster: Over 2,000 Tips and Tricks to Save You Time and Money Every Day by Mary Hunt contains a superb collection of practical, easy, low-cost ways to help busy lives run more smoothly and keep homes and your family clean and better organized. Arranged alphabetically, Hunt’s chapters offer handy tips and short-cuts for automobiles, cleaning, food and cooking, gifts, holidays, kids and babies, money and finances, pets, repairs, and vacations to just name a few. Tips are short, well organized, easily understood, and often use common household items to accomplish a task. A few examples include:
“Windshield—washer fluid—Mix together 3 cups of rubbing alcohol and 1 tablespoon of liquid detergent in a gallon-size jug. Fill with water, cover, and shake to mix well. Label it ‘cap tightly’ and keep out of reach of children. Shake well and then pour the mixture into your car’s windshield washer compartment. You can use this in your car year-round because the alcohol will prevent freezing in the winter. (pg. 31)” “Perfume and cologne—refrigerate—Refrigerate your cologne, and it can last for as long as 2 years. If a fragrance is exposed to heat, air, or sunlight, it immediately begins to change. (pg. 169)” “Teeth—tea for fluoride—If your water lacks fluoride, drink teas. Black tea delivers more fluoride than fluorinated water. (pg. 174)” “Scouring powder—homemade—For a basic scouring cleanser, mix together 1 cup of baking soda, 1 cup of borax, and ¾ cup of salt. (pg. 59)” “Food and meals—cereal mugs—Serve cereal to little kids in large mugs instead of easy-to-tip cereal bowls. The handle helps kids control the messes. (pg. 263)” “Moving—move midweek—If you’re moving, do it on a weekday. Fees can be as much as 50 percent higher on the weekend. Pack everything yourself and save at least 10 percent. Most movers provide cartons. (pg. 240)”
Hunt’s book is a newly updated version of her 1997 Tiptionary. All tips have been researched and tested for efficiency, cost effectiveness, and ease of use. One of her goals is to prove there are multiple ways to achieve the same result and many of her tips offer choices. Incorporating the handy ideas contained in Cheaper, Better, Faster into your daily routine will make your life less of a chore while saving you time and money

Awake & Alive is expanding by acquiring a larger school compound in 2014 that will DOUBLE the number of students enrolled. Hence our “Double the Miracles Campaign”. Each child who gains hope is a miracle - we’re aiming for twice those miracles in 2014.

Community
Couture
By: Bethany Burgun, founder Community Courture
O
n November 11, 2013, Michiana residents braved the season's first snowfall to attend the Grand Opening of Community Couture, a locally owned organization committed to building the community, empowering women, and providing clothing to underserved or under-resourced women and children in the South Bend area. The event was held at The Well, a coffee house operated by Grace Church and its pastor Ashley Swanson. Community Couture's founder, Bethany Burgun, launched the organization on the belief that all women deserve high quality clothing regardless of occupation or socioeconomic status, and that enhancing exterior beauty allows inner beauty to shine more brightly. Community Couture organizes seasonal clothing and accessories exchanges where women come together in a boutique-style shopping event to reinvigorate their wardrobes at little cost. Proceeds are reinvested in Community Couture's development and donated to a local charitable organization. Proceeds from the Grand Opening benefit Hannah's House, a maternity home in Mishawaka. The next clothing and accessories exchange will be held at The Well next spring. Area businesses donating door prizes to the event included Camellia Cosmetics, Ali Oesch Jewelry, Salon Rouge, and White House Black Market. DeLo's Cafe provided coupons and consultants from Mary Kay and Avon shared samples with shoppers.
“
Community Couture is an opportunity to give back, to provide a forum for women to gather in community, and to provide high quality clothing to women needing assistance in an esteem-able, dignified way.
