I

f May is my favorite month, then June is a very close second. With June, the summer weather comes and frost is gone for a while. I love the sunny days, blue skies and warm temperatures. June brings the start of lake season, which is important to me since I live on Diamond Lake. There are the obvious lake activities of boating, sailing, water skiing and swimming. What makes June better than July or August is that only part of the lake population returns before July so the lake isn’t nearly as crowded as it will get. Of course, the water is still pretty cold! June is also the month when all the schools are finally out for the summer. It’s the season of graduations and graduation parties. And, of course, June is the traditional month for weddings, although these days it is more the start to the wedding season. It is also the start for local fresh produce, beginning with asparagus and strawberries. Other fun things in June include picnics, weekend trips and the start of summer vacations. There are also a couple of special days in June. Flag Day is June 14th. Our national flag, the Stars and Stripes, was officially adopted on June 14, 1777. June 14th was declared National Flag Day by President Truman in 1949 after having been celebrated locally for many years. I can’t forget that Father’s Day is also in June. I always considered myself to be a “Daddy’s Girl” so even though I lost my father nearly 16 years ago, Father’s Day is still important to me. Be sure to honor your father this June 19th.

How To Choose A

Paint Color By: Andrew Skipper

Painting a room is one of the easiest ways to transform it without spending a lot of money. The fact that you can do it yourself or hire a professional for minimal cost and have it completed in just one day makes painting an attractive solution to achieving a new look in your home. The only problem lies in decision making—how do you choose a color? If you find yourself asking this question, you’re not alone!

Here are a few tips to selecting the right color for your rooms:

“When it comes to decorating, painting should be one of the last things you do.”

8

JUNE 2016 | SASSY

Tip #1: First things first, start

Tip #2: It’s important to test

with what you already have. Take color cues from pieces that you love such as rugs or other patterned fabrics like curtains and upholstery. When it comes to decorating, painting should be one of the last things you do. Pulling paint colors from existing pieces in the room is much easier than trying to find fabrics to match a color you already have on the wall. Don’t be afraid to hold off on painting until you’ve chosen all the furniture, curtains and rugs that will go in a particular room. Then you can bring a variety of paint swatches home and see how they work with the other pieces you have.

several paint swatches in any given space. All colors have undertones and they aren’t always obvious at the paint store. If you’re wanting to paint a room gray, for instance, there are grays that lean more toward the blue side and grays that have undertones of green, brown and even yellow. The difference can be drastic, and often results in a room feeling warm or cold. Depending on the look and feel you’re going for, you certainly want to make sure you’re on the right track before committing to a color.

Tip #3: Speaking of paint swatches, it’s a great idea to take things a step further and actually buy a sample of the paint you’re considering. Almost all paint stores sell samples which allow you to test-drive, so to speak, paint colors in your own home before you commit. The reason this is wise is that paint textures and colors can change in appearance depending on a variety of factors. The particulars of your home and each room in it play a major role in how certain colors will look. You may love a paint color in your friend’s house, but there’s no certainty that the same color will work in your home. The eye will read colors on the wall based on other things in the room like flooring color, furniture color, trim stain and especially lighting. Natural and artificial light play a huge role in how color is perceived. Take into account the time of day you’ll be using the room. If it’s an entertainment or media room that you’ll primarily use in the evening, consider darker colors. Painting walls a rich dark color can make them recede and as a result, the space will feel larger.

Tip #4: It’s also important to know what color palates your eye naturally prefers. Some people are wild about bold color combinations while others feel more comfortable in a soft neutral environment. A great way to get to know your style is to peruse magazines or look at interiors online. Save photos of rooms that you instantly find appealing and after a while, you’ll see a theme emerge. Take your color cues from these photos that you naturally gravitate towards.

Tip #5: Once you select your color, it’s time to think about the finish you want to use. While there really are no hard and fast rules, there are some traditional guidelines to help you navigate which paint finish to choose. Here’s a helpful chart that will come in handy:

Flat Finish Ceilings Eggshell Finish Bedrooms, Living Room, Dining Room Satin Finish Kitchen, Laundry Room, Bathrooms, Hallways Semi-Gloss Finish Trim & Molding, Kitchen Cabinets, Doors & Woodwork Gloss Finish Rarely Used (Used on furniture for a lacquered look)

Whatever color and finish you choose, have fun painting your home! Remember, it’s just paint and you can always change it, so don’t be afraid to try new things. The results could be just what the decorating doctor ordered.  SASSY | JUNE 2016

Memories Make

This Father’s Day By: Cyndy Searfoss

He

probably already has a closet full of ties – and since business casual became the office standard, he only wears them to weddings and funerals. He can’t fit one more gadget in his desk drawer – and calls you to ask how to work them anyway. He doesn’t even have room in his golf bag for yet one more club. So, what do you do to make this Father’s Day memorable? Researchers tell us that happiness and satisfaction doesn't come from the “stuff ” we accumulate. Rather than spending hours online, at the mall or hardware store searching for the perfect gift this year, why not give the dad in your life an experience he’ll remember? Here are just a few suggestions for great experiences to give – or have with – that special guy, whether he’s your father or a father you’d like to honor. And, each of these is designed with a budget in mind.

Adventure

• Rock n’ Roller Coaster Trip – A roller coaster and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame weekend trip is a great way to take Dad back in time. And, it’s only a four-hour road trip. Cedar Point, which bills itself as “The Roller Coaster Capital of the World,” has a brand-new attraction this year, the Valravn. Of course, the park has a number of lessthrilling rides, too. Spend a day eating funnel cake and enjoying the scenic park, then head to Cleveland for a day at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

• A Bird’s Eye View of Chicago – For the dad who soars above all others, a paragliding trip over Lake Michigan, might be just the ticket. If that sounds a little too adventurous, helicopter rides are also available. Tip: check Groupon or other online discount sites to get a great rate. 10

JUNE 2016 | SASSY

Take in Some Culture

• A Day at the Museum – Close to home are the South Bend Museum of Art, History Museum and Studebaker National Museum. Their exhibits change frequently, so be sure check their websites for the latest information. There are also numerous museums within a few hours’ drive… art of almost every description can be seen in Chicago, Indianapolis and Detroit. Find a new restaurant to enjoy together and enjoy!

• A Night at the Opera – Or theatre… the South Bend area is fortunate to have a number of theatre and musical organizations that offer a variety of events. From baroque to modern, from classical to comedy, there’s sure to be a play or concert that fits your dad’s taste. Pair it with a special dinner out to give your dad a night he’ll remember.

Just Plain Fun

• A Day with Dad – Offer to spend the day with your dad doing his favorite past time. Even if it’s been years (or maybe never) since you went fishing, golfing or hiking, your dad is sure to appreciate having you along to share the fun. Potato Creek State Park is a great place to fish or hike and there are a number of public golf course throughout the area. If he’s a car enthusiast, offer to go with him to one of the many area car shows over the summer.

• Splat! – A little friendly competition on the paintball field or on a mud run is a great way to make memories with your dad that you’ll enjoy for years to come. Even better, get other family members to join you in a battle of the generations. If you’re the creative type, you may also want to design a commemorative t-shirt for the event.

• Be a Good Sport – If your dad is a baseball fan, this may be the

“This may be the perfect year to take a trip to Chicago to take in a game.”

perfect year to take a trip to Chicago to take in a game. Both the Cubs and Sox have gotten off to red-hot starts. If he’s not a Chicago fan, check the schedule to see when his team is coming to town. Forgo the white-knuckle drive… a number of local organizations sponsor bus trips or take the Southshore to downtown, then catch a train to the park.

Regardless of the activity, remember to take plenty of pictures, including selfies of you and your dad. You can create a scrapbook or memory book to give him for Christmas or his birthday.  SASSY | JUNE 2016

Refresh Your Mid-Year

Goals By: Emily Zander

In case you haven't noticed, it's June. Yep, that's right...month number six. Half of the year is officially over. But, what about that half of the year that is still to come? Are you like me and let the New Year celebration pass by without one resolution for the upcoming year? Or are you like so many people that find it hard to even remember what they said they were or weren't going to do? Maybe you already achieved your goal or are right on track. Congratulations! But, summer can be a new starting point; no matter where you are along the way in 2016. Even if your summer isn't exactly full of lazy days, chances are you have a bit more free time lying around. If nothing else, it stays lighter longer and may just give you the boost of energy you need to take on a new challenge. Mindtools.com says whenever you are ready to begin a new venture, you should remember the five golden rules of goal setting.

The first step? Figure out what goals motivate you. If you've been meaning to start having the kiddos do more chores around the house, summer may be a good time to start. You'll have more time to dedicate to making a chore chart, teaching them how to do different tasks and thinking of a fun way to reward the new effort. Just think how much this could pay off when September rolls around and everyone is back to being busy. Not only have you taken the time to teach your children valuable life skills, you just lightened your work load! What can be more motivating? 12

JUNE 2016 | SASSY

Set S.M.A.R.T. goals. S is for specific. Maybe you want to be more active while the weather is nice and get in better shape. Nature and exploring new places may motivate you, so you decide to go on a hike at a new park each week this summer. M stands for measurable which means you could easily make a list of parks and cross them off once you've achieved it. A is for attainable and R is for relevant. You'll have to decide these for yourself: can you realistically do it and does it matter. And T is for time bound; meaning you've set an "end date" of when summer is over. Does this mean when the kids go back to school or the actual last day of summer on the calendar?

Write down your goals. We've heard it before. It won't happen unless you write it down. Your goal is to try baking one pie every week this summer. Write it down: "Bake One Pie Every Week." Now post that piece of paper in your kitchen. Make sure it's hanging someplace you will see it every day.

Make a Plan If you've posted your pie goal for everyone to see, you need to remember to do a bit of planning to figure out what it will require to actually make the pie. Pick a day to do your baking. Make a list of the pies you are going to bake each week. Make a list of ingredients you can gather ahead of time. It is important to think about all of the details you need to accomplish your goal, instead of just the finish line. Chances are, you won't have any trouble finding someone to test the pies once you're there.

T hankwho youattendedto everyone the

Stick With It! Let's face it, there are going to be things that come up and threaten to alter your plans in achieving your goals. Did you resolve to read three classic works of literature this summer and then get strapped with a daunting new project at work? If you don't have the time you thought you would have to dedicate to your new goal, or something else goes awry, try not to scrap it all together. Maybe you need to revise your goal to only two classics now that you will be spending more time at the office. If you mapped out how many pages you needed to read each day to accomplish your goal, you may need to do less during the week and more on the weekend.

Nutritional Shakes Are They Really Healthy For You & The Family?

B

By: Jamie Lober

oth nutritional shakes and juicing are trends that we hear a lot about in the news. You may wonder if it is a good idea to promote growth and development in your child or even for your whole family to try. Shakes and juices can be made in a variety of ways such as incorporating fruits and vegetables in the juices. “From the dairy aspect, shakes can be a nutritious part of childhood or for the family as a whole,” said Hanna Kelley, registered dietician and health and wellness manager at the American Dairy Association of Indiana. There are many factors at play. “What you want to consider is whether or not you are making the shake at home or purchasing it away from home as well as portion control,” said Kelley.

Some shakes are better than others. “Shakes when made with milk or dairy products whether it is actual milk or frozen yogurt or Greek yogurt or made at home have nine essential nutrients, so you are getting calcium, vitamin D, protein, a good source of carbohydrates, B vitamins, potassium and a good, long list of healthy things that are quick and easy to get in an eight to 12 ounce serving size,” said Kelley. If your child is not fond of dairy, you can spruce things up a bit. “If you are adding fruit or potentially a bit of chocolate syrup, you may be adding a little extra sugar in that capacity if you are making it at home,” said Kelley. It does not take a lot of additional treats to add flavor. “You do not need very much because the dairy products themselves are tasty,” said Kelley.

Keep in mind how often your child is having a shake. “If you are having a 36-ounce cup of shake everyday it may or may not fit into the rest of your daily nutrient needs if you are already consuming enough of those nutrients in a day,” said Kelley. Typically having an eight to 12 ounce milkshake once or twice a week would be a good way to encourage good nutrition particularly if your child is a picky eater when it 14

JUNE 2016 | SASSY

comes to other food groups. “Children tend to like dairy products like yogurt and milk but sometimes prefer them with a little bit of chocolate syrup,” said Kelley. The only way a dairy product could turn negative is with too much sugar added. “You want to look for a smaller portion so you do not focus on added sugars but I do not see any downsides to having the occasional shake,” said Kelley.

When you consider the drinks that are available to kids, you have to be cautious. “There is a concern about energy drinks however the evidence of their safety is still evolving,” said Dr. Jeffrey Cain, outgoing president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The Food and Drug Administration is looking at the safety of high-caffeine drinks like Monster, Rockstar and Red Bull. The American Medical Association also voted to support a ban on marketing of high stimulant, caffeine drinks to children under age 18. Fruit

juices are very popular as well. Kids love them because they taste good though too much can cause obesity, tooth decay and poor nutrition. The American Academy of Pediatrics said that fruit juices should not be given to kids under six months because they offer no nutritional benefit at that age; should be limited to four to six ounces per day for kids between ages one and six and should be limited to eight to 12 ounces per day for kids between seven and 18. Make sure the drink is pure fruit juice, meaning 100 percent juice, so it does not contain added sugars or sweeteners. Diluting it with water can be helpful.

Do not forget the importance of water and staying hydrated. How much water you need depends on age, sex and health status. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said that newborns and infants need 0.7 to 0.8 liters of water a day from breast milk or formula; toddlers need 1.3 liters and kids up to eight years old need 1.7 liters

daily. Boys between ages nine and 13 need 2.4 liters daily and teenage guys and adult men need 2.7 liters. Girls between nine and 13 need 2.1 liters and teenage girls need 2.3 liters while adult women need at least 2.7 liters a day. The U.S. Department of Agriculture emphasized that you need to drink more water if you exercise a lot or live in a warmer climate, so in Michigan and Indiana it is not as crucial as sunnier states.

When mixed with some other choices, shakes can be beneficial. “They are a good way to provide a little nutrition where kids feel they are getting a treat at the same time, so I just encourage you to keep looking for ways to make them at home like adding in fresh fruits or maybe some peanut butter that is nutrient dense,” said Kelley. Have fun with it and encourage other parents to do the same. 

Staying

Young In The Sun By: Christina Clark

Here comes the sun!

(It took long enough, right?) It’s a good feeling to shed the sweaters, move them to the back of the closet and trade them for the shorts and halter tops we nearly gave up on somewhere around January. It’s tempting to immediately try to kick our winter hues and lay out in the sun to bronze up, or run out to a tanning salon and try to get what we are so comfortable referring to as a “base tan.” We all have heard of sunblock and sunscreen, and we’ve heard the warnings about skin cancer, and yet most of us will take the freckles and the occasional sunburn without a second thought. UV (ultra violet) rays from the sun share a clear connection with skin cancer, and skin cancer makes up about 50% of the cancer diagnoses in the United States, according to Esthetics industry publication Dermoscope article “The Role of Sun Exposure in Skin Aging.” The same article lists “wrinkling, laxity [lacking in elasticity], enlargement of pores, loss of elasticity, heightened melanogenesis [synthesis of melanin] and visible telangiectasias [dilated, enlarged capillaries] are all common as a direct result of UV exposure.” Some of the most inexpensive forms of anti-aging are preventing overexposure to UV rays all together. 16

JUNE 2016 | SASSY

“skin cancer makes up about 50% of the cancer diagnoses in the United States.”

What are some easy ways to remember to protect your body’s largest organ—your skin? Most don’t want to wear SPF 50 every single day, and that’s just fine. Here are some simple changes and things to consider that can keep your skin looking supple and firm, even-toned and looking as young as you feel!

A Daily Ritual Using a moisturizer with built-in SPF (sun protection factor) on a daily basis is a great first step to protect your skin and love it back. It is an easy substitute in your morning routine as well, to simply reach for a different moisturizer after cleansing and treating our skin for the day. SPF 15 is a great place to start for days when you are just running in and out of buildings. Plan on spending more time outside? Think about upping the SPF rating to that of 30 of over.

Lather, Rinse, Repeat When performing any physical activity, wading or swimming, your skin will “use” the efficacy of sunscreen faster. Even if just lounging around in the sun, it is a good idea to reapply sunblock to exposed skin every hour or two to protect your skin.

Don’t Become Hot Headed Where our hair parts can become red and painful after a day at the beach, and hair can hide skin growths and irregularities from early detection. Lucky for us, wide-brimmed, floppy hats are always acceptable beach and summer wear, as well as head scarfs, and plenty of other options.

Sunroofs and Convertibles We often forget that sun exposure happens when we are inside our vehicles as well! Everyone eventually notices that their “driving arm,” your left arm that rests near the window as you drive, becomes tan, freckled or burnt much faster than the right if you spend lots of time in the car. Sun damage can occur from having the sunroof open or the top down as well if some protection isn’t worn during those great summer drives with the wind in your hair.

“good idea to reapply sunblock to exposed skin every hour or two.”

All That Glitters Something else to think about? Wearing reflective accessories (such as sunglasses with rhinestones) can direct heat and sun rays, which can result in hyperpigmentation in specific areas. Of course, if over exposure does occur, work to help heal the skin and don’t continue to expose it to the sun without covering or sun protection of some sort. Using an aloe product can speed along soothing and healing the skin, but make sure that the product contains a minimal amount of alcohol. Many aloe vera products, many that we recognize by the cleargreen coloring, contain skin drying alcohol, so finding 100% aloe vera is ideal. Storing it in the refrigerator gives a very soothing, calming application that furthers the anti-inflammatory effect that aloe has for skin.

Cooler showers and avoiding scratching and further peeling if the burn sheds the top layer of your skin (can lead to scarring) and keeping covered and moisturizing your skin as it heals will help to minimize further damage to the skin on multiple levels. SASSY | JUNE 2016

Park-Fit

in Granger

he weather has finally turned and it is time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. Our community is loaded with parks that are equipped to accommodate many different outdoor activities. Playgrounds are great fun for children, but they can also be used by adults as a free outdoor gym. Even better, parents looking to combine a workout and quality time with their children can easily add a "park-fit" workout into their summer routine. Kids can either play or they can join in on the exercise program. The following workout is designed around the Prairie Lane Fitness Course in the residents only park of Prairie Lane Estates neighborhood in Granger. This workout can be taken to any park, however, and is meant to encourage participants to get outside and shake up their normal fitness routine. Be on the lookout for parks that have a balance beam, monkey bars and a sturdy bench. Start with the local elementary school, they have beautiful playgrounds that generally contain these beneficial pieces of equipment. The intent of the movements chosen for this program is to offer balance, flexibility and strength. This powerful trio works together for the ultimate full body workout. Don't forget to put on sunscreen and bug spray, let's get park-fit in Granger!

Cardio A bike ride, a brisk walk or a jog are all great ways to complete a cardio component to your workout. Find a park that is close by so that the journey there will get your heart pumping and your blood flowing! Another idea is to use the tennis courts or soccer field at the park and either walk or jog a few laps around them.

1. "The Balanced Walk" This simple to follow exercise is actually very difficult to complete. It will challenge your balance and core while also toning your shoulders. Keep your eyes straight ahead and reach your arms straight out to the side. Stay on the balls of your feet the entire length of the beam. Walk the beam's length in total 10 times. If a fall occurs, start from the beginning.

*To modify, keep heels down. *To intensify, try walking backwards or balancing on one leg at a time for 20 seconds each.

2. "Side Angle Flow" Flexibility is key in enhancing overall physical performance as well as in preventing injury. Begin with the right leg bent with foot and knee pointing to the right. The left leg is straight and reaching out and down with the foot and knee facing front. To begin exercise, bend torso at waist to the right reaching left arm overhead with right arm resting gently on the right thigh. This is position "A" called Extended Side Angle Pose. Move to position "B" called Reverse Warrior, by straightening the right leg and reaching torso up to the left. Go back and forth between "A" and "B" 10 times and then repeat on the other side.

3. "Monkey Bar Abs" Begin exercise in position "A" hanging straight. Keep shoulders down away from ears. Move to position "B" a tuck, by tucking pelvis under and then bringing knees in. This is a lower abdominal exercise and the pelvis needs to be posterior in order to be efficient. Start with five repetitions and try and increase to 20 by the end of summer.

*To modify, find a monkey bar close to the ground. Use ground for support between and during repetitions. *To intensify, keep legs straight throughout exercise.

4. "The Bench Crunch" Find a bench so that this sit up is elevated. Bringing an exercise off the ground will help engage smaller muscle groups in order to prevent a fall. Begin in position "A" a supine position with knees bent and the back of the head supported. Try to anchor the low spine to the bench. Lift head and shoulders up to move to position "B." Keep an apple size space between the chin and the chest. Return to Position "A" to complete one repetition. Keep low spine anchored to bench throughout exercise. Start with 10 repetitions and work up to 30.

5. "Tricep Bench Press" Keeping the movement elevated will help engage core and smaller muscle groups. Begin in position "A" a plank with hands directly under shoulders and arms shoulder distance apart. Move into position "B" by bending elbows back, upper arms should brush the sides of torso as arms bend. Keep neck long, shoulders down and do not arch back. Straighten arms to return to position "A" to complete one repetition. Start with five repetitions and work towards 15.

*To modify, keep knees on bench. *To intensify, invert the push-up by putting hands on ground and feet on bench. ď § SASSY | JUNE 2016

Living Inside Your Means By: Allison Boelcke Smith

How To Create A Healthy Budget Your level of income doesn’t matter if you’re spending more than you bring in. People from all wage brackets can find themselves not making progress on their financial goals because of one simple factor: not controlling their spending through a budget. A sustainable budget is one in which you empower yourself by making a conscious choice on where your money should go - versus mindless spending that leaves you wondering where your money went and why you don’t have anything to show for it. Live within your means by creating a healthy budget!

1. Track Your Spending Take a look at your recent spending habits to gain an overall view of your current financial state. List out your fixed costs: monthly bills, minimum debt payments, etc. Then, go through your bank or credit card statements to see how much you spend on necessities (such as food and gas) and discretionary purchases (entertainment, travel, daily Starbucks runs, etc). If you use cash for spending and don't have receipts saved, start recording your normal spending for a month before you create a budget.

20

JUNE 2016 | SASSY

“The best budget is the one you can actually stick to.” 2. Run the Numbers

5. Protect Against Frugality Fatigue

Once you have all of your monthly spending tracked, add it up and compare it against your monthly income to determine where your priorities should be focused as you create a budget. If you spend close to your total income (or worse, more than you bring in), then your priority is to reduce spending immediately. Even if you're not living paycheck to paycheck, it's still beneficial to evaluate any mindless spending that could be better utilized elsewhere. Some of the figures may be eye-opening and help you see if you’re spending excessively on one area.

A certain amount of sacrifice may be required to help you reach your financial goals, but if you are overly ambitious about making your budget as tight as possible, you'll likely succumb to "frugality fatigue." This term refers to psychological exhaustion from overly depriving yourself and can cause you to abandon your budget altogether. Being on a budget isn't the opposite of having an enjoyable life. Build in room in your budget occasional indulgences that make you happy or reward yourself when you reach a goal - just set a limit so you don't undo your hard work!

3. Set Goals

6. Revisit it Regularly

The primary function of a budget is to enable you to make conscious choices in regards to spending your money so it supports your long-term goals. However, if you don't have clearly defined financial goals. you're likely to spend impulsively on items that aren’t personally fulfilling. Brainstorm all of the financial goals you'd like to accomplish, and then list them in the order of urgency and/ or personal importance. Pick one goal to focus on at first, and decide and how much money you would ideally like to contribute to it. For instance, you may want to reduce your discretionary spending, and allocate some of that money to paying extra on your credit card.

Your budget is likely going to be a work in progress, so don't worry about getting it right in your first attempts. Do regular "check-ins" with your budget and measure your results. If you find yourself consistently exceeding your budgeted amount for a particular category, simply readjust your budget to give yourself more room in that area or dial back on how much you're devoting to your financial goal. Remember: just like with diets, the best budget is the one you can actually stick to.

4. Determine Spending Limits You don't have much control over your regular bills, so your budget will mainly be for giving yourself guidelines for how much you should devote to necessities, discretionary spending and working toward your financial goals. Refer to your tracked spending, and write out a list of your most common spending categories and amounts. Assign yourself spending limits for each category that are realistic for your personal needs, but are reduced enough to prevent impulse buys. You will discover through trial and error what limits actually work for you, but you need a baseline from which to start. As an example, a grocery budget may sound doable on paper - until you actually shop and realize it’s way too tight, even without impulse or luxury buys.

A healthy budget shouldn’t be about sacrifice and deprivation. Think of it not as something you do to punish yourself, but as a way to help you achieve the bigger goals that will make you happier overall. Once you get into the habit of sticking to a budget, it will become easier especially once you start seeing results! 

How Working Moms Can

Have It All

Spoiler alert: They can’t! And that’s okay. Here’s a secret for you. Have you been searching for a way to balance it all? Do you want to know how to have the ultimate career, the beautiful home, the doting husband and the all-star children, while feeling completely fulfilled and satisfied at the same time? Well, listen up. Here’s the answer to this long-burning question of how working moms can have it all: perfect balance doesn’t exist.

That’s right; having it all is a worthless pursuit. Now, before you surrender to life and curl up in your bed only to fall into a deep depression, hear me out. Life is full of seasons and stages. At different points in each of our lives, we have different priorities and demands on our attention. To try to balance every aspect of our lives at every stage is a pursuit that will only lead to exhaustion and failure. Look at it this way. Let’s say you want to lose weight, but you also want to eat that that ooeygooey chocolate cake. Given that the cake has about 8,491 calories (give or take) and you would have to run about 41.7 miles (roughly speaking) to negate the caloric consumption, the fact is you can’t have your cake and lose weight, too. You must make a choice. 22

JUNE 2016 | SASSY

By: Meagan Church

So, instead of asking the question, “How can I have it all?” let’s reframe the conversation to “How can I prioritize this season of my life?” Try these steps to get you started and working towards the balance that is right for you:

Do a life plan. Where do you want to be in one, five, 10 or 20 years? Ask yourself these sorts of questions. Write down your answers. Go through a life plan, so you know what you are working towards now and in the future. Knowing this will help you better prioritize how you spend and focus your time.

Set goals. Once you understand what you want your present and future to look like, set goals to get you there. You won’t find that you have accidently meandered your way to your destination over time. It takes intentional steps and practices to get you where you want to be.

Only say “hell yes.” When you know your plan and your goals, then you can set your priorities. Life is full of distractions. Things come up, even things that sound good and fun and promising. It’s so easy to say yes to the charity board, the PTA, the activity your child has been wanting to do. But, to work towards your plan and to have any

semblance of balance and focus, you must know how to say, “NO!” or, as writer and speaker Jen Hatmaker said, only say “Hell yes!”: “If it’s not a HELL YES, then it’s a no. “So that medium yes, that I-feel-like-should yes, that guilty yes, that coerced yes, that I-actually-hate-this-thing yes, that I-guess-so yes, that who-else-will-do-it yes, that careless yes, that default yes, that resentful yes, that I-probably-shouldn’t-but-struggle-withboundaries yes?

“It takes intentional steps and practices to get you where you want to be.”

“NO. Nope. No thank you.”

Give yourself grace. Even as you plan, set goals and prioritize, there will be seasons of chaos, of when work gets more attention than the kids or caring for the aging parents means less time for your personal care. In those seasons, give yourself grace. Remember that just as winter does finally fade to spring, a new stage will come. Until then, give yourself grace in the midst of the chaos. And, perhaps cut a thick slice of that ooey-gooey chocolate cake for yourself without considering how many miles you should run to make up for it. 

A Wild Swan and Other Tales By Michael Cunningham Reviewed By: Rebecca Bloodworth, Reference Librarian, Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library-Mishawaka

Michael Cunningham has already set his footprint in the realm of fairy tales with his previous work, The Snow Queen. In A Wild Swan and Other Tales, he ventures further down that yellow brick road and what he envisions may be a little shocking to the average reader.

felt it was easier to see the logic in the villain’s argument.

Here is a collection of stories, easily recognizable from childhood storybooks but slightly twisted. These particular versions are not for children. Cunningham has clearly re-written these classics for adults with knowing hearts and eyes that have seen the gritty, ugly side of life.

Did you ever wonder about the old witch in her gingerbread house? What was her story? How did she come to live in the woods, surrounded by sugar and decay? Did she really have a taste for human flesh?

These are stories for those who, as young readers, couldn’t help but consider what happened after the book closed - If the characters did, in fact, all live happily ever after. Even more so for those who suspected that a few of them came to a very depressing, tragic, and realistic end (or worse, they just kept going). And for the readers who

After all, if history is written by the victors, why not fairy tales too?

Were you the child who heard the story of the Twelve Swan Princes and knew that life would never be happy for the one who was left with one, pale wing when the rest were made whole? Cunningham invites his readers to re-learn these classic stories and take them for what they were intended to be: warnings to the young and the foolish. SASSY | JUNE 2016

Preparing for a

By: Allison Boelcke Smith

Stress-Free Vacation from Work

Taking time away from the office to unwind can actually help you become more productive. Vacations prevent burnout, but many professionals don’t take full advantage of their earned paid time off. The dread of returning to a mountain of work or the uncertainty of your responsibilities being covered effectively can make your vacation feel more like a chore than an escape.

Fortunately it doesn’t have to be that way! Use these tips to prepare for a stress-free vacation from work: 1. Prioritize Your Workload Review your current and upcoming “To Do” list. Determine what absolutely needs to be done before you leave and what could wait a week or two, and focus your efforts on those high priority tasks. It's important to keep in mind that you very likely won't get your workload down to zero - this keeps many professionals from taking their vacation time. Instead, try to get ahead on your highest priorities and tie up any loose ends rather than scrambling to get any and all work done. In fact, waiting on the less pressing tasks will help ease the transition back from vacation. You’ll have relatively painless work waiting for you, and can get back in the groove of the workday more gradually.

2. Meet with Your Boss While your impending vacation is top-of-mind for you, it may not be for your boss. To help them prepare for your time off, request a time to sit down and discuss your plans. Tell them about your workload, including what you'll be completing before you leave and what will need to be covered during your absence. This is also a good time to set boundaries regarding how accessible you will be during your time away. Be specific - if you just say you're available if pressing questions arise, you could potentially be fielding regular calls and emails. Tell your boss how often you will check your email (such as once a day) or feel free to say you won't be available at all.

3. Inform Others Give a heads up to your colleagues, clients or anyone else who may be affected by your absence. Reach out a week or so before your vacation in order to give them the opportunity to ask you any questions or make requests before you're unavailable. If a coworker will be handling any of your tasks while you're gone, provide some quick refresher training and a reference guide to reduce any errors while you're gone. And of course, don't forget to set up an email auto-response and update your voicemail to let people know you're out and when you'll return - that way you don't come back to a bunch of upset messages!

4. Get Organized Even when you mentally check out and are in "vacation mode," you can still be productive while you’re still in the office. A simple but effective way to prepare for your vacation so you don't have a stressful return: declutter your workspace. Get rid of excess papers, straighten up your desk and clear out your email inbox. Whatever measures you take to get your work environment looking as clean and uncluttered as possible will be met with relief when you return from vacation. It's hard enough to get back to the grind after a carefree vacation, so don't make it worse by working frantically until the last second so you come back to a mess.

Don’t let what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation turn into a stress-fest upon your return. Taking the time to plan ahead before you leave work will allow you to better enjoy your time off and come back refreshed and more engaged than ever! 

ULTRA

5. Debrief a Final Time Before you leave for vacation, touch base one last time with your boss and immediate reports or colleagues. Remind them you're leaving, reiterate your level of accessibility and ask if they have any final questions or requests before you go. Then you can skip out the doors knowing everyone is on the same page and you've done all you can to prepare your office for your time off.

DAY TRIPS In Michiana! Special SASSY Section

Organizing A

By: Lara West

Girls Night Out Winter offers the perfect setting for relaxing evenings at the house sipping wine with the girls; and winter lasted a little longer than we hoped, but it is winter in Michiana, after all. Finally, it’s time to shed heavy coats and enjoy a warm night out with the girls! Someone has to plan the fun before you can all go out; and that someone might as well be you. ( Yes, you can do it.) Organizing a girl’s adventure is much easier said than done, but it is totally worth it. Since everyone has a life moving at 200MPH, it is hard to find a date when you and your girlfriends can get together. (It doesn’t even have to be a large number. Just getting your two besties together at the same time can be difficult.) Here are a few ideas to help you organize an exciting girl’s night out: 26

JUNE 2016 | SASSY

1. Choosing a date. Start by selecting a few dates that work for you and send out a mass message asking if any dates work best for them. (If you are planning for a big group, limit this to those you really want to spend your night with, because inevitably you’ll end up having to plan it on a night when someone says is not good for them, and that just creates unwanted drama.) Most ultra-busy people these days have a hard time making a commitment too far in advance. If your girlfriends are this way try giving no more than a week, but at least three days notice when possible. This just makes it hard to plan an event that requires advanced registration. 2. Choosing the event. The only way to make choosing a date is easy to choose the event first. If there is a Canvas and Wine event or a concert happening, that date has already been coordinated for you. You just have to know how many people to register, which puts you in a boat very similar to choosing a date. If there are no pre-organized events happening, it’s your job as the ship’s captain to make it happen. This is the time to get creative with your planning if you so desire, but don’t feel the need to give the classics a cold shoulder. If you’re craving some excitement grab a Groupon for anything local that you haven’t done yet or in a while.

Things to consider doing: • A vineyard tour and tasting. • Get a group mani/pedi and massage. • Dress like a celebrity and dance till the morning. • Visit a museum. • Go skydiving… or indoor skydiving. • Roll in style with a night of bowling and pizza. • Duke it out with a game of paintball. • Go shopping and get a free makeover. 3. Make a plan. Once you know your primary event for the evening, plan other things around it to pull everything together. • Meeting for a cup of coffee and a slice of pie might be nice to help everyone de-stress before the night begins. • If you’re going out and want to look good, a stop at the makeup counter for a free makeover beforehand may be exactly what the girls need to get things started right. • Know where you want to eat. If you are going to a bar (or two) everyone can easily order whenever they’d like, or share appetizers for dinner. If you are visiting an art gallery, you should choose a restaurant closer to the venue to prevent too much commuting.

Big City.

Bigger Heart. You'll love family getaways in Fort Wayne! Explore Indiana’s second-largest city this summer, and discover a heart-warming family escape!

You can never go wrong with an amazing girl’s night-in either, but the weather is just getting warm enough to enjoy it outdoors. We all need that one big outing with our skin feeling the gentle spring breeze to shed our winter blues. It’s time to break out that calendar and schedule a night out with the girls. 

2016 St. Joseph County Go Red for Women Luncheon

T

he Morris Park Country Club was a sea of red on Thursday, May 5 as more than 150 people gathered for the annual St. Joseph County Go Red for Women Luncheon.

Supporters of the Go Red for Women movement who joined together in the fight against heart disease and stroke were treated to healthy lifestyle education, “purse”onalities auction, gourmet lunch, passionate survivor story and an interactive doctor’s panel led by Saint Joseph Health System. Local news anchors, Bob Montgomery and Leanne Tokars from WSBT 22 News emceed the event. “Go Red for Women brings attention to the effects of heart disease and stroke. Each year, 1 in 3 women die of heart disease and stroke,” said Laura Guy with the American Heart Association. “Sadly, 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented. Funds raised at local events fund research geared towards women.” The Go Red for Women movement continues to gain momentum in the Michiana region and it harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. When women know their risk for heart disease and take action it can reduce their personal risk. Guests also heard the heartwarming survivor story of Kirsten Kehoe, local heart disease survivor who experienced postpartum cardiomyopathy, a rare type of heart failure that occurs during pregnancy or immediately after delivery. Kehoe had no signs or symptoms before giving birth to her daughter but after, she knew something wasn’t right because it felt like someone was standing on her chest and went straight to the doctor, which saved her life. Kehoe tearfully told women in the audience that “it’s important to be your own advocate because heart disease can strike at any time and happen to any woman.” For more information and to join the Go Red for Women movement visit www.MichianaGoRedForWomen.org or call 574-274-1783.  28

Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter Tea Party

Photos Provided By: Veronica Sherman, www.veronicasherman.com SPA (Spiritual & Personal Adjustments) Women’s Ministry Homes is completely mad about tea! So, to no surprise, SPA’s guests went completely bonkers at this year’s Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter Tea Party. Guests began their afternoon by taking a stroll through the Queen’s Royal Court where they enjoyed croquet, met the infamous Queen of Hearts and her “deck” of soldiers, and stole a few tarts while passing through. Based on the original storybook written in 1865 by Lewis Carroll, ladies of all ages enjoyed this family friendly spin on a timeless children's story. Needless to say, they also played along! So, like the story, they drank a potion to shrink before squeezing through the rabbit hole as they entered Alice’s imagination where they were introduced to Wonderland and all her friends. On May 7, 2016 SPA staff, clients, and volunteers not only stepped into Elijah’s Fire International Church where the tea party was hosted, they also stepped into character. Alice, Mad Hatter, White Rabbit, Dormouse, March Hare, Cheshire Cat and the those pesky trouble makers, Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum went to work welcoming guests and making sure everyone had a fabulous time. Guests enjoyed Alice in Wonderland themed sweets, drinks, and party favors. While this was a treat, the highlight of the afternoon was a fashion show organized by Bella’s Boutique with SPA clients as the models. Ladies who came to SPA because of their struggle with life-controlling issues and addictions walked with their heads held high as they let their inner beauty shine through, and wow did it! SPA’s desire is that ladies know who they are in Christ and experience the love of Jesus Christ. SPA’s hope is that the ladies felt that love as they walked the isles and a roar of excitement and applause went forth from God’s people. Tea party guests rose to their feet, not merely to applaud SPA’s clients as they modeled, but more so to encourage them in their journey and to recognize them for the strong, courageous women of God they are! SPA Women’s Ministry Homes provides Christ-centered, residential treatment for women struggling with issues such as drug addiction, sexual assault, and domestic violence. Through its one-year residential treatment, transitional housing and aftercare programs, SPA is introducing ladies to the healing and redemptive power of Jesus Christ. 2016 Walk MS: T

Michiana

he 2016 Walk MS: Michiana rallied more than 800 people in the fight against multiple sclerosis (MS), on Saturday, May 7 at Indiana University South Bend. Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. And there are an estimated 10,000 Hoosiers living with MS. Individuals at Walk MS: Michiana walked through the IUSB campus and along the river to not only celebrate the progress that research is making to end MS forever but to raise awareness of MS in the South Bend community. The morning festivities were emceed by Greg Bobos and Jackie Layer from South Bend’s ABC57. South Bend Mayor, Pete Buttigieg, and United States Congresswoman, Jackie Walorski, also showed their support for the cause by attending Walk MS: Michiana. Every year, Walk MS: Michiana is an opportunity for people living with MS and those who care about them to connect, join together, be inspired and raise critical funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the 2016 fundraising goal for Walk MS: Michiana is $100,000. In 2015 alone, more than 315,000 people in nearly 550 locations across the country walked to create a world free of MS, raising nearly $50 million. Since 1988, Walk MS has raised more than $920 million to fund critical research and life-changing services to help people with MS live their best lives.
