Weekend Project:
Closet
Organizing By: Nicole Cripe
“I have nothing to wear!”
H
ow many of us have said this countless times while trying to get ready? When your closet is loaded with clothes that you aren’t wearing, doesn’t fit correctly or you simply don’t like anymore, the clothes you do wear get lost in the chaos.
This calls for a Closet Clean Out and Organization Project! This probably doesn’t sound like much fun, but trust me, it will be worth it! Let’s get your closet to work FOR YOU, not against you. Time to get started...
Out With The Old Remove everything you don’t like or that doesn’t fit from your closet. If you have pieces that you aren’t sure you’re ready to part with or you’re hoping to fit into again, still remove those items but store them in a plastic tub. Revisit those clothes in six months to a year. Either you’ll find a “treasure” you forgot you had and it will be “new to you” again or you’ll wonder what you were thinking when you bought it.
Hanger Swap Out Slim line hangers allow you to hang more items in your closet. Their flocked exterior keeps clothing from sliding off and they won’t stretch out the shoulders of your sweaters or shirts like plastic or metal hangers. Yes, this can get expensive but my suggestion is to change them over slowly by only picking up one or two packages at a time until you’re completely switched over. 10

Stickley Authorized Dealer!
Now it’s Time to Separate By Item: Separate each piece of clothing into categories by item. Categories can include tops (which can also consist of sweaters and jackets), dresses, jeans, pants (which can also include shorts and leggings) and skirts. Separating your clothing into categories allows you to find exactly what you are looking for. If you need blue jeans, you know where to get them because they will be hanging together. By Color: The next step you want to take is separating each category by color. This is as simple as it sounds. Start with white and then end with black, filling each color in between. If you know you are going to wear a red blazer and want to pair it with a white shirt, locating those shirts will be much easier because all of your whites are now together. By Length of Sleeve or Pant: There are several different types of tops that a woman can own. There are tank tops, cap sleeves, t-shirts, three-fourth length sleeves and full length shirts. Within each color group, organize your tops from sleeveless (or shortest length you have) to full length. Once you are finished with your tops, then it’s time to work on your pants. Organize by length starting with your shorts until you reach your full length pants. You can even use this method with your jeans and skirts.

Make-Up
By: Bethza Seminario
What’s in your summer make-up bag? My absolute favorite season of all time is approaching and my tropical/Caribbean soul is extremely happy. I love going to multicultural festivals around the Midwest and, of course, sunbathing at the beach. I am sure many of you have started your gardening and also cannot wait to lay by the pool and relax. But, before you get out in the sun, it is extremely important that your skin is properly protected no matter what your outdoor activity may be. Below is a list of items that every woman should keep in her traveling make-up bag to protect her from the outdoor sun. Facial moisturizer with at least SPF 50 – A MUST for Brow gel/pencil liner – You need a formula that any outdoor activity. Apply it on your face and will not come off to expose the areas you want 1. 5. neck. to fill in. When filling in, make sure you do hair

Foundation primer – Apply it focusing on your T-Zone and under your eyes. These are the first areas that creases or melting happens when high humidity and sweat occurs.
3.
Same skin tone concealer – You’ll use it to spot treat any imperfections or discolorations under your eyes and blemishes. Unless you are going to an event, try to use the least as possible. Compact translucent powder – It will set the concealer procedure and will serve to absorb any excess 4. of oil during the day. Only use lightly on your T-Zone to keep the rest of the face glowing and fresh.
strokes with a light taupe tone color; this will give a much more natural look to your brows. Get them shaped before traveling to avoid over plucking because of desperation.
Warm pink/coral tones lip tint – This will work as a blush and a lip color. With your fingertips, ap6. ply it only on the apples of your cheeks and a tiny bit
on your nose to give the illusion of a little sun-kissed. Also apply it to your lips. Lip tints tend to be long lasting and lightweight, helping with high temperatures and sweat.
8.
Your favorite mascara (water resistant/waterproof) – Many of you may not like the idea of a waterproof formula, but you don’t want to look like a raccoon. Many Latinas and Asians use waterproof mascara all their life to get the curl on their lashes and if removed softly and delicately, there should be no damage. Lash extensions for vacations are the way to go! Eyeliner (water resistant /waterproof) – If you must have your eyeliner on, look for a waterproof 9. formula to prevent smudging and again to avoid the unattractive raccoon eye look. MAY 2014 | SASSY

Bronzer (optional) – Apply it where the sun would kiss you naturally (on your cheek12. bones, and a tiny bit on your nose). Highlighter (optional) – I take it for when I go to dinners and shows. The key is to bring out the 13. nice tan that you got throughout the day. Apply a tiny bit on the inside corners of your eyes and above your cheekbones. Skip the bronzer if you feel this gives enough drama.

Wine & BBQ:
The Perfect
Combination
“A good rule of thumb is that red wines go well with red meats like your burgers, steaks and ribs.”
By: Elizabeth Carris
With April showers, bring May flowers and with the month of May sparks the grilling season! So, that brings the question what wine goes well with grilled meats, veggies and sides? A good rule of thumb is that red wines go well with red meats like your burgers, steaks and ribs. These meats can be salty, smokey and even sweetened with sauces or marinades. The lighter meats, like chicken and sausages, pair well with the white wines. Whites also carry over to the side dishes like pasta’s and potato salads and even chips and salsa! Zinfandel’s can handle a large variety of red meat. It’s spicy, peppery flavor will compliment just about any red meat you lay on your grill. It can even go well with barbeque sauces and some marinades. But be leery of too much pepper or smoke flavor in your sauce because the two will just compete and you will lose the flavor of both the meat and the wine. Smoked brisket will pair well with a Syrah’s intense fruit forward flavors of rustic leather and blackberries and its mellow tannins. Where the baked cherries and plums found in Merlot, whose name means little blackbird, take over the grilled pork chops and chicken and garden variety salads. Cabernet Sauvignon’s are a steaks best friend due to the higher fat content in the meat and higher tannins in the wine. The boldness of the cabernet will be a palate pleaser with steaks or burgers topped with daring cheeses like blue or sharp cheddar. And if you aren’t sure which red to choose since you aren’t sure of your menu or your guest likes or dislikes then choose a Pinot Noir. A Pinot Noirs soft note of sensual warm baked cherries, damp earth, chocolate and plums can be paired with red meats, chicken, turkey and even fish. It’s a lighter varietal and its light tannin’s and lighter color will make it sure to be a crowd pleaser for all palates and most grilled dishes alike. Grill friendly whites could be a nice buttery and oaky Chardonnay to pair well with grilled fish, including shellfish, chicken and of course the all American

favorite grilled corn on the cob! A Riesling is next in line with its sweet and delicate flavors of apricots and slight mineral notes will pair finely with brats, shrimp and even grilled pineapple.

And don’t forget the perfect food wine in the always pleasant, crisp and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. It’s notes of green apple, melon and honey suckle will compliment grilled chicken or fish doused in Italian dressing or dill and pairs well with grilled veggies like pepper and zucchini/squash. It can handle just about any marinade or sauce. And don’t forget the to the lovely Gewrztruminer to bring balance to grilled spicy dishes such as Cajun style blackened chicken or fish like Mahi Mahi. When the snow is all gone, the air begins to warm, the sprinklers start to water the lawns and the days grow a little longer, it’s time to bring those grills out from under their covers and those wines out from their cellars and enjoy the beginning of summer. So whether it’s charcoal or gas, don’t forget the wine and the fun that comes with it! Cheers to bbq’s with family and friends.

Southold Dance Theater Celebrates Their 40th Year
F
By: Jessica Haviland
or any business to celebrate their 40th year is a huge accomplishment but for a dance theater to celebrate 40 years is a defeat within itself. “It’s a big deal, especially now since the funding of the arts is so scarce,” said Angela Leachman, Managing Director at Southold Dance Theatre. “It’s amazing and it shows that South Bend and surrounding communities support the art of dance.”
fairy tale that is loved by all ages, Sleeping Beauty. “Sleeping Beauty is really a feast for the audience,” said Erica. “It’s a fairy tale and children and adults of all ages are going to love this production. A professional Sleeping Beauty is two and a half hours long but we are cutting it down but keeping all the fun things in so it’s a manageable amount of time. It will really be magical.”
Back in 1973, a small group of dancers came together and formed an alliance. Together, they decided to create a small dance company known as Southold Dance Theater to share their passion for dancing. “Southold use to be a dance ensemble group then it developed towards kids and evidentually became a dance studio,” said Erica Fischbach, Artistic Director at Southold.
“Not only will you see their students having fun but you will also see their emotional connection between the music and the dancer’s moves.”
Fast forward 40 years and Southold Dance Theater has become one of the few local dance studios that train their dancers to succeed. “Our dancers get into top dancing studios across the country,” Erica said. “We are a true pre-professional dance studio.”
With Sleeping Beauty ending their spring program, Southold's summer camps and intensives are right around the corner. There are several camps for parents to choose from for their little dancers from ages three to five, six to nine and sixth through twelfth grade. “We will also be performing at Arts Everywhere on August 9th and at Art Beat on August 16th,” Angela said.
Southold students range from 3 years old to adults who either love to dance or have the passion to dance professionally. “Just this summer we have had at least a dozen students who got accepted into top dance studios,” Angela proudly states. Dancers can choose how often they would like to train ranging from 45 minutes once a week to several hours per week. “Those who aspire to work for the top dancing companies like to come here,” Erica said. “We focus on full length classical ballets during the spring program. We try and use the same choreography that the professionals do so they are familiar performing it later in life.” This year’s spring performance is a well-known 16
MAY 2014 | SASSY
Those who are interested in wanting to learn more about the programs and summer camps are encouraged to visit their website. “We have a wide range of different types of dance classes available,” Erica said. Dancers can choose from jazz, ballet and even a Broadway Boot Camp that will teach students how to act, dance and sing. “We have professional dancers who come and teach these classes,” Erica said.
As the summer programs and camps wrap up, Southold jumps right into action and starts practicing for one of their biggest productions of the year, The Nutcracker. Even though they are proud and humbled that the community loves this performance year after year, they also want to share that their students perform just as well, if not better, in other performances. “We are hoping to showcase and share that we are more than just The Nutcracker,” said Angela. “We have other exciting performances as well.” As you watch Southold’s performances first hand, it’s not hard to see how much their students love to dance. “We have an amazing faculty who caters to the student’s needs,” Erica said. “They really teach their students about dance and to have fun.” Not only will you see their students having fun but you will also see their emotional connection between the music and the dancer’s moves. “It’s also about enriching their lives through dance,” Angela adds. It’s easy to see why Southold is celebrating their 40th anniversary based on their performances, student successes and strong leadership skills. Get your child engaged in the art of dance by stopping in at their studio and ask about programs that they offer. “You can always try a class for free,” Angela said. Famous dancer, Martha Graham, once stated, “Great dancers are not great dancers because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.” And passion lies within Southold’s Dance Theater.

How to Deal with a
Hostile
Colleague By: Noelle Elliott
Nothing can ruin a work environment more than someone with a bad attitude, especially when the negativity is directed at you. Sometimes there is a reason but most of the time there isn’t.
That was it. He stopped. Of course there are other work situations that can occur that are more complicated. If you are following the rules and doing a good job, a co-worker that is hostile towards you is probably feeling threatened. It is not your problem to change their mind but if it is jeopardizing your job performance (or your sanity) you need to address the issue before it gets worse.
My worst experience with this was when I worked as a personal assistant to a producer in Los Angeles. In this office, all the assistants were in a big room with desks and our bosses had offices. It was like a lion’s den. Rank was based on longevity. Being that I was the newest member, I was an easy target.
record incidents with the date and what was said or done. Designate an email folder for all messages that you find offensive or disrespectful.
Office hazing can be done in various ways. I would hear my name followed by laughter. I would get excluded from lunches. I would receive emails to alert me of a mistake I made and notice everyone in the office was cc’ed including my boss. In addition to this, one co-worker was downright mean to me. Most people believe that bullying only takes place with the younger generation. An office bully has an entourage of co-workers who follow their lead and most of the time the management has no idea. The job I had been very excited about was now a source of pain and it was affecting all areas of my life. I didn’t know where to turn. If I talked to my boss, I risked looking like I couldn’t handle things on my own. My first instinct was to quit, but I had worked so hard to get this job. I decided to confront him myself. When I caught him alone, I politely asked him what it was about me, or my job performance that bothered him. He didn’t know what to say. I went on to tell him that I was doing my best and his comments were hurtful.
Start documenting the ways this co-worker is rude to you. Use your iPhone’s note feature to
Send them an email. I like to have a paper trail of all my interactions. It is good for my memory, but also for situations that you may need proof to back up your claim. Give an example of a situation that you felt they were treating you poorly. There may be a small chance that they don’t realize what they are doing. Keep it short, professional and to the point. If they do not respond, ask to have a few minutes of their time.
“If there is one thing that you take away from this article it is this, Keep a paper trail.”
Have a face-to-face meeting. This can be very
effective if done correctly. Be straight forward and professional and express that their behavior is making it hard for you to stay positive in the work environment. Follow up with an email summing up your conversation. Again, keeping a paper trail. If the behavior continues, you may need to talk to your immediate supervisor. It is important to know who this is. It could be a manager, a district manager or the Human Resources department. By this time you should have several examples of your attempt to improve the situation on your own. If they decide to contact the person, request that they follow up with you so you know what to expect. This holds the supervisor accountable and may ease your worries. Again, send them a thank you, summarizing the conversation. If there is one thing that you take away from this article it is this, keep a paper trail. I cannot stress the importance of this enough. Not only in a file on your computer, but print them and keep them in a file at home or in your desk. Avoid bringing other colleagues into your problem. As comforting as it is to have an ally, it does not reflect you in a professional light. Hopefully this will rectify the situation but sometimes it doesn’t. Continue to do your job and as long as you are not being threatened in anyway, continue to document their actions. If the problem persists, take it to the next level of authority. By this time, you will be armed with several documents. Your job is your livelihood and most of us spend over 40 hours interacting with co-workers every week. It is important for you to remain professional and on good terms with everyone to keep a positive outlook. As you continue to move up the corporate ladder you will get much further when you have more allies than enemies. SASSY | MAY 2014

t was word-of-mouth recommendation that changed Jodi Brenneman and her husband John’s lives in more ways than one.
Diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle, John was experiencing symptoms of congestive heart failure, including chest pain. The medication prescribed by his cardiologist zapped his energy at the lowest recommended dose. One day Kelly Boyer, a friend and the nurse practitioner of Crossroads Healing Arts, recommended an alternative medical approach-IV therapy. With the treatments, John’s chest pain disappeared and his energy came back. John was able to increase his heart medication to the optimal dose and maintain his energy level. So impressed by what they experienced at Crossroads, a few years later, they along with Kelly, purchased the practice. “I have always had a strong interest in natural approaches and when we saw just exactly what these alternative therapies can do, it was amazing,” Jodi said. “It made us want to be a part of it.” Located in Elkhart, Crossroads is an integrative medical clinic that offers alternative therapies, including natural hormone replacement, nutritional IVs, non-radiation/pain-free breast screening, allergy testing, prolotheraphy and more. “We see a lot of patients who have hit a dead end and who are not sure what else to do, so they come to us to find a different approach,” she said. Even though Crossroads has only done limited advertising, the word has been getting out about their services, and not just in our local area. “Many people in our community have not heard of us, but we have people who travel in from Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York, Tennessee, Iowa and more. We have doubled our space since 2011 and have a plan to continue our growth and keep moving forward.” Before becoming the business manager of Crossroads, Jodi had an extensive business background, but no experience with the medical field. “That was probably the biggest challenge I have ever taken on,” Jodi admitted. “I truly know, whole-heartedly, what blood, sweat and tears are.”
For Jodi, it doesn’t matter what the specific field is or if there is a steep learning curve. What matters most is the passion behind her efforts. “If you feel you are passionate about something, you should take that challenge,” Jodi said. “I'm goal oriented and having a plan or goal in mind is critical, along with perseverance. My background of athletics has also helped me along the way with having a competitive edge and with knowing it takes a team to tackle it. We have a caring team which is critical in this business.” But what really keeps Jodi and Crossroads going and offering their integrative medicine and natural therapies is one thing: the patients. “The medical field is not glamorous. You see and hear many things that break your heart apart.” But in the end, it’s all worth it. “It's the success stories that we see and hear from our patients that keeps everyone going.”
“We see a lot of patients who have hit a dead end and who are not sure what else to do, so they come to us to find a different approach.” Crossroads has changed the course of the Brenneman family in many ways. With three kids and one granddaughter, the practice has touched multiple generations and has challenged them to live healthier lives. “I definitely am more conscientious of the foods we eat and drink. My son who is seven years old will say that sugar is a feeder to cancer,” Jodi said with a laugh. Since John’s first IV therapy, Crossroads has made a positive impact on his health and the family’s overall quality of life. And it all started with a simple recommendation a few years ago.

Savor The Taste At The Century Center
S
tuffed chicken breast, ginger marinated roasted salmon, pineapple glazed ham and crème brulee cheesecake; is your mouth watering yet? A lot of new and exciting changes have been happening at the Century Center in Downtown South Bend, starting with their new menu and a very talented executive chef.
By: Jessica Haviland
Photography: Century Center
Originally from Glenwood, Illinois, Chef Rory Bancroft has a strong culinary background from restaurants, to hotels and resorts. “I have a lot of experience with various culinary art styles that I can incorporate into our menus at the Century Center,” said Chef Rory. “I like to use local products in our food because it gives the customers more choices and they also have a better opportunity to enjoy fresh food.” To accompany the new executive chef is a newly updated kitchen. New combi ovens, service ware, and several cosmetic changes were done to the Century Center’s kitchen. “Along with new management, SMG, at the Century Center that started in July, General Manager Leanna Belew says, "We work with over 40 local vendors and stakeholders to provide local services and products whenever possible.” Keeping business local and eco-friendly is highly important for both Chef Rory and Leanna. “It’s not really one thing we do,” said Chef Rory. “It’s more
of a philosophy of our operation.” With more of an effort to serve food from local farms, use reusable and recyclable serviceware and donating when overabundance possible, this philosophy will contribute to the green effort. “We donate to the Center for the Homeless when we can. Everything that we can’t donate (due to health regulations) will be used for compost,” said Chef Rory. According to the Green Restaurant Association, just one restaurant in America can produce 25,000 to 75,000 pounds of food waste per year! But, don’t put the Century Center in that equation because they are doing their part in saving the world one container at a time. “We bought clear plastic containers that the staff can put the trim loss into to help minimize loss and separate compost from garbage,” Chef Rory explains. “This helps increase our yield and keeps our cost down while helping the environment.”
Keeping business local and eco-friendly is highly important. “It’s more of a philosophy of our operation.” What do the chefs do after the container is full? “We are partnered with Family Farms Co-Op who comes and picks up the compost,” said Chef Rory. “It’s about one to two thousand pounds a month of food trim loss that the co-op can use. 95% of ourtrim loss is being composted.” 20

With locally grown and produced food and ecofriendly serviceware, their new food and beverage system has been a big hit with not only the Century Center’s Board of Managers but with local residents as well. Savor…South Bend, the food and beverage operation owned by SMG, the new managing company for the Century Center, caters to a large spectrum of people’s tastes. Savor offers a breakfast menu, lunch, dinner, refreshment breaks and even menu's designed specifically for events. “Recently we have done a rabbit dish for MDA and a pumpkin risotto for the Jewish Federation,” Chef Rory recalls. “This new menu has changed to be more seasonal and local. For example, you won’t be getting cantaloupe during the winter because it will be out of season by then.” When the board of managers took a tour of the new kitchen and taste test Chef Rory’s new creations, he had one particular item on the menu certain to amaze each board manager. “We took a slab of bacon and braised it for several hours followed by a bruleed maple sugar glaze,” said Chef Rory. Their response, “They were completely blown away by that,” adds Leanna. The executive director of Visit South Bend/ Mishawaka is one who was thoroughly amazed with the upcoming changes of new management, executive chef and upgrades. “I have nothing but great things to say about SMG (the new managing company). There has been noticeable improvements in service, community involvement, ease of doing business, etc. with SMG,” Rob DeCleene states. “In short, SMG, their staff, and corporate philosophies have been a breath of fresh air for my destination.” With the Century Center only one year shy of being under new management, the atmosphere, food, staff and energy is in full bloom. And ultimately, this is only a taste of what is yet to come. “In the next few months we are going to see a lot of new cosmetic changes,” said Leanna. “We will be receiving new carpeting throughout the building and new lighting in our suits.” And with additional changes being made, it won’t be hard to not only savor the taste but also savor that particular moment in time.

The Health
Benefits of Having a Pet
If you have a pet in your family you will probably be quick to agree; animals make you feel good. Whether it’s coming home after a long day to be greeted with a wagging tail and a set of paws on your lap, or waking up from a nap to find your kitty curled up next to you snoozing, being with a pet makes you smile and it warms your heart. Not only do pets make you feel great, they can also provide some positively, wonderful health benefits.
By: Jillian Koeneman
Here are Four Health Benefits of Having a Furry Family Member: “Cat owners have a 40% lower risk of stroke, heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases.”
Increased Fitness Level
Having a pet gets us out and moving. It may be a trip to the park to walk your dog, or trying out a doga class (doggy yoga). Dog owners are 34 percent more likely to complete the recommended minimum 150 minutes of exercise per week, according to a 2011 study published in the Journal of Physical Activity & Health. Other research has shown that dog owners walk 19 more minutes a week on average, and that having a family dog increases physical activity among adolescents (a key finding as childhood obesity reaches epidemic proportions), according to O Magazine.
Reduced Allergy & Asthma Risk Decreased Stress and Improved Mood
People who share their lives with pets are less likely to struggle with depression and can handle stress much better than their non-pet counterparts. Petting, holding and cuddling can rapidly calm down nervous and anxious feelings and help kick the negative mood to the curb. Pets have the potential to lower blood pressure, especially in hypertensive or high-risk patients, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “If you have a dog around, your blood pressure is lower,” says Marty Becker, DVM, veterinary consultant for Good Morning America and author of the upcoming book “Your Dog: The Owner’s Manual.” “A lot of it goes back to reducing stress: You might lose your job, your house, your 401(k)—but you’ll never lose the unconditional love of your pet.” 22
MAY 2014 | SASSY
Studies have now shown that children exposed to pets at young age have a reduced risk of allergies and asthma. University of WisconsinMadison pediatrician James E. Gern has conducted a number of studies that demonstrate having a pet in the home can actually lower a child's likelihood of developing related allergies by as much as 33 percent. In fact, his research -- as published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology -- shows that children exposed early on to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall. This, however, does not apply to adults who already have allergies to pets, thus the need to expose children to pets at a young age.
A Stronger Heart
The American Heart Association says that pet ownership is linked to a reduction in cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels and a lower likelihood of obesity. Other studies with the American Stroke Association concluded that cat

Are YOU Ready
for
I
Bikini Weather?
f you were not hibernating this winter you know it was a long one. The winter season in Michiana seems to last from Halloween to Easter and bikinis were the last thing on your mind. I always feel that I will have at least a month or two to tone up before my first day at the lake or pool. Not surprisingly the time arrives faster than expected and I am left in a panic. In talking with friends, I realize that this is pretty common. The cold weather makes people crave fat and carbs. I believe it is our body trying to protect itself from the cold elements but if this were true, it should naturally shed the fat once the weather heats up. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
You have to work but, I’m happy to say, there is enough time to get ready to expose your body to the sun. The following are tips to make the transition from boots to flip-flops a lot easier.
By: Noelle Elliott
Start Drinking Detox Water 1 Lemon ½ Cucumber A Handful of Fresh Mint
Slice the lemon and cucumber and place at the bottom of a pitcher. Fill with filtered water and let it sit overnight. It sounds easy enough. Not only does this keep you hydrated, it has additional benefits. Cucumbers have vitamin K and A, Potassium, iron and calcium. This combination will also work as a diuretic, which will keep you from holding on to your unwanted water weight. In addition, cucumbers have a significant amount of fiber and will help flush out toxins, which is another way it will help you lose weight.
Eat Clean
There are so many diets that restrict a food group. At one point in time I have tried them all. I have eliminated meat, dairy, carbs, sugar and gluten at some point in my life. What all the diets had in common was that I wasn’t able to stick with them long term. What has worked for me is eating whole foods. I stick to fruits, vegetables, brown rice, organic meats and the occasional sweet treat. What I have eliminated for good is artificial sweeteners and processed food.
Pass on the Alcohol
Don’t panic, it is not forever. But if you want to get ready for bikini season you must pass on the cocktails, wine and beer. Not only are they caloric bombs, they also decrease your willpower to make good food choices. 24

Stand Up
I work in an office. One of the growing trends is to have stand-up desks. This is a desk that is the height of a counter top. You stand while you type, talk on the phone, etc. There is a chair that can be raised to that level if you need. My co-worker who ordered one said he has never felt better and research backs his claim.
THAnK YoU...
According to juststand.org, standing is like walking: It increases energy, burns extra calories, tones muscles, improves posture, increases blood flow and ramps up metabolism. While sitting, does the opposite. Now if you are like me, you can’t just request a new piece of furniture at your office, but what you can do is take frequent breaks and walk around.

Muscle Up
Women are genuinely afraid of strength training but I can promise that it will get you to your goal in half the time of just doing cardio alone. I have discovered this from experience. In college I spent 60-75 minutes doing cardio, only to remain frustrated that I still felt flabby. Then a trainer introduced me to weights. Within weeks I achieved the tone I was looking for. Eventually I ended up doing more weights than cardio. Today I found a great combination of the two and it is called Crossfit.

Reasons to
Drink More Water By: Jillian Koeneman
As a professional woman I am sure you have heard over and over,
“Drink more water!” Are you getting your (8) eight ounce glasses in each day? Are you drinking half of your bodyweight in ounces? Are you drinking a gallon of water each day? Probably not. Let’s face it, we’re all really busy women. Our schedules are jam-packed between personal and business commitments and we often struggle to keep our lives in balance, let alone remember to guzzle down a glass of water every couple of hours. Adding to that, your mind may be craving that delicious vanilla latte that’s just a drivethrough away and water intake often gets overlooked. So why should we take a moment to stop our busy lives and take a sip? Here are seven reasons that you should get a water routine flowing in your life!
4.Cleansing.
Are you feeling a little sluggish and icky? Water is a great way to naturally cleanse your body and get rid of toxins and waste products that it holds on to.
1.Move over Fatigue.
One of the most common signs of dehydration is being tired. Your first reaction when you feel tired may be to reach for the caffeine to boost your energy level but that is exactly what your body doesn’t need, since caffeine actually dehydrates you. Limit your caffeine intake and boost your water consumption to refresh how you feel.
Focus and 2.Improve Concentration.
Water is essential for every cell, tissue and organ in the body and the brain is no exception. In fact, you brain is made up of 75% water. Also, drinking water can ease stress and calm your thoughts when trying to focus on what’s in front of you, allowing you to be more productive in your day.
Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or did you simply not drink enough water? Drinking water is a sure way to improve that not-so-nice mood you’re in.
Headaches are often another symptom of dehydration. Because your brain is made from 75% water, if you aren’t getting adequate water throughout the day, you may experience a headache as your brain is thirsting for water.

Drinking water is a great way to hold off that hunger pang during an afternoon meeting or during the drive home from work. You may think that you are hungry but your body is really telling you that it needs more water. Drink some water and push off that hungry feeling until you can have a healthy, balanced meal.

3.Magic Headache Cure. 26
5.Suppresses Appetite.
7.It’s free! (Almost).
Water is cheap and even if you are buying filtered or bottled water you will save a ton of money in comparison to the expensive, sugary alternatives.

In Japan, it’s common to start your day with drinking two full glasses of water. While there’s nothing scientifically proven that doing this cures diseases or leads to a longer life, we do recognize that Japan houses the healthiest humans in the world. We could certainly learn from that and many American health experts also agree that drinking 16 ounces of water immediately upon waking up can improve your overall health.

So exactly how much water should you drink each day? “Drink half of your body-weight in ounces each day,” says Carol Ebersole, Certified Nutritionist and member at Anytime Fitness in Goshen.
Drinking more water is just like any other healthy habit. It takes some time to establish what works best for you and it takes diligence but you will immediately begin to feel the health benefits from doing it. Get creative with ways to remind yourself to drink more water. Perhaps that means setting a recurring alert on your smartphone. Or you could take a gallon jug of water and with a marker write time intervals on it (e.g. 9 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM, etc). Another great way to boost your water intake is to involve your coworkers in a water-drinking challenge. At the LaunchPad in Goshen, they challenged members to drink 64 ounces of water a day for a month. For every day you did this you got to put a tally mark on the board. The person at the end of the month with the most tally marks won a prize. It was fun and a great way for everyone to boost their health by simply drinking more water. Do you have a creative way to remind yourself to drink more water? We’d love to hear about it! Share your ideas with us via our Facebook Page!

“Facciamoci un aperitivo” (Let’s have an aperitif )
It’s a lovely evening in Parma, Italy
and I’m sitting at my computer in my hotel room with the windows open, finishing answering a plethora of emails when I hear the bells of the church tower clang, signaling the 6:00 hour. It’s time to put work aside and ease into the evening. “Facciamoci un aperitivo” (Let’s have an aperitif ) is a phrase that is commonly heard in Italy, and one that has become music to my ears.
The specific purpose of an aperitivo is to stimulate the appetite, which is why the Italians like to indulge in this tradition just before dinner. However having an aperitif has become more a way of life, allowing one to gather with friends anytime between 6 and 9 in the evening to socialize while enjoying savory nibbles and typically a dry cocktail or glass of Prosecco. As I make my way down to the hotel bar, I am greeted by a few new friends who are just getting their first glasses of Prosecco from the waiter, who by the way, is dressed impeccably. Chairs are grouped close together to facilitate conversation while a variety of olives, cheeses and breads are laid out alongside trays of prosciutto and ham. For the next hour, friends and strangers alike join the lively party atmosphere, drifting from conversation to conversation, the wait staff never letting a glass get below a third of the way full. I sit back and observe the scene, thinking to myself, “This should be how every day ends!” Perhaps I can incorporate this ritual into my own lifestyle, even once I leave Italy. The bottom line is that it’s all about simplicity. The main focus is enjoying the company of others while you transition from the work day into the evening. Why not invite friends over just after work for a cocktail and some no-fuss snacks like pretzels, olives and cheese? The point is to make it stress free on you and them. In
fact, this is something you could do every evening with the family. Who wouldn’t want to get home from work and know that the first thing on the agenda is winding down with a glass of bubbly and discussing the day’s happenings with a loved one? It’s a great way to leave the office at the office and engage with your friends and family. For an easy aperitif set up, take some tips from the Italians. Keep a stock of Prosecco, champagne, sparkling wines or juices. There’s something about having an effervescent drink that makes even a mundane Monday feel special. Also keep savory no-prep snacks on hand like chips (try veggie chips for a healthy alternative), olives, breadsticks and chez mix. All you need are a few simple serving dishes, some cocktail napkins and a few candles and you’ll be ready to host a fun Italian-style aperitivo any night of the week!
The bottom line is that it’s all about
simplicity.

W
ith the warmer weather slowly making it's appearance and local beaches start to get busier, it's only common for us SASSY women to take a break and read a book. We asked a number of Michiana individuals with connections to literacy to name books that they believe everyone at any age should read.
1. Donna Meeks
4. Marcie Morrow-O’Connell
The Book: “Aesop’s Fables”
The Book: “The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn
Mishawaka Library Manager
School Director at Great Lakes Montessori
2. Laura Williamson Ambrose
Why This Book? Morrow-O’Connell believes “The Kissing Hand” is a great choice to read to young children leaving home for the first time to start school. “This book reassures the main character that his mom is always with him and when he feels lonely he can remember their special little secret,” she says. “Chester the Raccoon's mom kisses his little hand, which enables Chester to have the confidence and security to go to school.” Morrow-O’Connell has plenty of personal experience with “The Kissing Hand.” “I read it to all five of my children when they started school.” she says.
The Book: “Beloved” by Toni Morrison
5. Paula Lambo
Why This Book? Meeks chose a book she feels everyone will benefit by reading. “I selected this title because it contains hundreds of deep, thought-provoking, potentially life-changing lessons – each written in a matter of a few sentences,” she says. “This is storytelling at its best...when an author can present the profound in a light-hearted, entertaining narrative.”
Assistant Professor of Humanistic Studies at St. Mary’s College (Notre Dame, IN) Why This Book? “Simply put, this is the book that changed my life,” says Williamson Ambrose. “In high school, reading it for the first time opened my eyes to a different type of novel, one where individual lines felt more like poetry than any poem I had ever read; in college, discussing all of its voices in their full range of beauty and pain convinced me to major in English; in graduate school, teaching it gave me the chance to watch students who had sworn off literature really connect with a book for the first time.” Ambrose’s personal connection to “Beloved” continues today. “I think it is now, as a woman and a mother, that it’s sharp, moving story of memory and motherhood and loss speaks to me all the more powerfully,” she says.
3. April Pulley Sayre
Author and Photographer (www.aprilsayre.com)
The Book: “The Carrot Seed” by Ruth Krauss
Why This Book? “This children's book pretty much covers the journey of entrepreneurs, artists and world changers,” says Pulley Sayre. “‘Don't give up’ is the key to just about everything good in the world.”
Avid reader, Executive Director for the Literacy Council of North Central Indiana and Director of Adult English Services at St. Vincent dePaul Parish, Elkhart
The Book: The Big Stone Gap trilogy by Adriana Trigiani, which includes “Big Stone Gap,” “Big
Cherry Holler” and “Milk Glass Moon.” There is also a fourth book titled “Home to Big Stone Gap.” Why These Books? Lambo reports that she recommends the Big Stone Gap trilogy to everyone. “These books were just a delight to read and for me growing up Italian American, first in Cleveland, Ohio and then in Elkhart, Indiana, really spoke to our family traditions and phrases,” she says. “The story line is very entertaining for anyone, but the peppered Italian phrasing and references in the books transcend their setting in Virginia to anyone who has grown up Italian, as first or second generation in America.”
Is there a book you believe everyone should read? Watch for an opportunity to share your pick on SASSY’s Facebook page this month!

The 10-Step Stress Solution: Live More, Relax More, Reenergize By Neil Shah Reviewed By: Helen Cawley, Young Adult Librarian, Harris Branch of the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library
M
ost of us have stress in our lives. We are constantly juggling home, work and pleasure activities, all while trying to get enough rest. Neil Shah, the founder and director of the UK-based Stress Management Society, has written a handbook on how to relieve our bad stress in order to be more productive in our work and also to get more out of our relaxation time. Part one of this book explains what stress is, how it affects our bodies, what the positive and negative aspects of stress are and how we cope with that stress. Part two, the 10-step stress solution, outlines in a progressive way Shah’s techniques to deal with negative stress throughout our day. He states that prioritizing our health, getting a good night’s sleep, practicing deep breathing, drinking enough water, eating for well-being only and exercising are all physical ways to combat stress and can bring an immediate sense of relief. The next four steps of Shah’s plan deal with achieving a certain mindset in order to remove harmful stress from your life. He believes making the conscious effort to have a positive attitude will help your body become more relaxed. Also, by becoming the master of our time, developing more organization in our schedules, we will feel more in control and we will find that we have enough time during the day to get important activities completed with plenty of time for relaxation. Technology has also become a taskmaster in our lives, as we constantly try to keep connected through email, social media or our cell phones. Are we managing our online accounts or are they managing us? The last mental goal in the 10 steps is that it is okay to say no: no, I’m too busy at this time; no, I am not the best person to
help with that project; no, I just don’t want to do that right now. Neil Shah is truly an expert at stress-management and his book reflects this. His observations are clearly stated and full of common sense. I appreciated the case studies throughout the book, as well as the opportunities to develop a personal action plan. Most people who read this book and follow Shah’s easy recommendations to examine their lives and habits, can acquire healthier, more stress-free lives.

advice from a business coach
Dear Charrise: Charrise McCrorey is a global coach/consultant, writer, speaker and founder of Arms Wide Open Corporation, supporting the empowerment of people and businesses to live and work in their highest purpose. She has offices in Elkhart and Chicago.
Email your questions to: Jessy@MichianaFamilyMagazine.com to have them answered by Coach Charrise!
Have a co-worker who’s driving you batty? A boss who just won’t listen to reason? Or maybe you’re wondering if this is your time to break out and show the business world what you’re really made of – but you don’t know exactly how to go about it. Sounds like you need some sound business advice! Send your questions to Charrise, our SASSY Business Coach, and have them answered here. It’s time to get a fresh perspective!
Q:
My team keeps changing their minds about what they are doing with our new project. I called a meeting to clarify where we all stand so we can move forward confidently and start working on creating something special, and although things had shifted slightly, we came back with a clear plan. A week goes by and my teammates seem to not be on the same page again. How do I best approach this situation?
Charrise Says: What is the mechanism for accountability? Does each member have a clear set of actions with specific deadlines? Without an agreement about who is doing what, and a commitment from each member to be accountable, you don’t have a real plan. At the end of each meeting, each person must be clear about what’s next, and what their specific role is in accomplishing your shared vision.
32
MAY 2014 | SASSY
Speaking of a shared vision, what assumptions are you making that you’re all on the same page? Perhaps there is an opportunity to reaffirm that you all want to work towards this shared objective. Until that is communicated properly, and you have bought in from all of the people who play a role in the project, you will not have optimal success on this project. Another point to consider is the quality of your meetings. Do you have some people who carry the meeting and others who take a back seat? It’s critical that everyone at the meeting make a contribution. Can you encourage and inspire those who don’t contribute to become more engaged? When everyone participates in a way that is highly engaged, your project will be a home run.
Q:
: I'm planning on working remotely, moving about 100 miles away for a while. What are your best tips to keep on top of things and keep up team rapport? I know the teach dynamics will change a bit, but I have invested heavily in my work relationships and genuinely want to continue our productive relationships. What’s the best way to do that?
Charrise Says:
With today’s technology, working remotely is more possible than ever. It’s great that you have already established personal relationships with your teammates. This will serve you well in the future when you have less in-person time together. So much communication occurs today via email, text messaging, instant messaging and video conferencing. This makes it possible! It’s wise to consider that there are risks inherited in establishing typed words as your primary communication. As you have likely experienced, email messages and texts can be misinterpreted, because you are lacking the cadence of the conversation and also the body language involved, which makes communication more effective. One solution would be to have as many conversations using video as possible. There are many programs that make this easy and accessible. You might also consider making a commitment to personally visit the office every few months, or as often as you believe is useful. Reconnecting in person will help solidify your commitment to the relationship and will enhance your ongoing video and email interactions. It takes a special effort to stay involved in the important things that will happen while you’re away. You won’t continue your current high level of engagement without an equal level of intention to do so. Though you are responsible for 50% of every conversation, you cannot control the other 50%. The people with whom you desire to continue relationships must also be committed to creating the continuing dialogue right along with you. Before leaving, create some agreements with those important to you, including specific timelines for keeping updated progress of projects and updates. SASSY | MAY 2014

Curing The Heart One Beat At A Time
By: Jessica Haviland
Participating In the Go Red Better U Challenge Summer is slowly, yet surely, approaching Michiana which only means your grills will be in full time use. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, potato salad, mac and cheese and so much more appetizing foods will be spread across your patio table for the whole family to indulge in. Do you ever stop and think how “healthy” these foods really are? How will this affect your health? According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer in women today causing one in three deaths per year. The signs and symptoms can go unnoticed and vary depending on how severe your condition is. Think you’re too young to have heart disease? The American Heart Association says heart disease affects women of all ages. Smoking, birth control, lack of exercise and overeating can lead to heart related complications. Even though age is not a factor, if heart disease runs in your family, you have a higher risk of having heart disease. Amy Wardlow, manager of Cardiac Services and Central Processing at Elkhart General Hospital, has heart disease that runs in her family. Her father passed away from a long history of heart complications and both of her grandparents had heart disease and diabetes. “I have a lot of risk factors for heart disease but I am not suffering from any effects but I want to keep it that way,” Amy said. And that is exactly what she is doing! Every year, the American Heart Association has a Go Red Better U Challenge where they sponsor 12 local women per year to take part and help lower their risk of heart disease. Amy is one of the lucky 12. “I believe it was the end of December when we received an email from Elkhart General of an application of why you would want to take part in this challenge,” Amy said. “In the application, you described your family history, where you work, are you able to participate in an exercise program, height, weight, lab values and a release from your physician. I wanted to lose weight and set a better example for my children.” This 12 week program helps women lower their risk of heart disease depending on their risk levels. For Amy, she has a diet coach that helps her find healthy foods at her local grocery store and help develop healthy, yet appetizing, recipes for her to try. She also has a personal trainer that helps her lose weight. “It is free to us in the program,” Amy said. “We also have a weekly phone call that we can take part in and there is a blog and Facebook page for the Go Red Better U Women present and past participants.”
With the program coming to an end, Amy feels more confident with herself. “My weakness wasn’t McDonalds or fast food, it was sugar,” Amy admits. “Now that I have gone without raw sugar for a while, eating fruits tastes like candy to me.” One of the biggest questions asked is how successful this program is after the program ends. “I think the majority of the participants stay successful because they don’t go on any crazy fad diet to lose a bunch of weight at once,” Amy states. “Each week they have a guide that will have us change something in our diet. They ask us how we are doing on the program and document our progress on a worksheet.” After the 12 weeks have concluded, all contestants get together for a luncheon to show off their hard work and dedication. The morning before the luncheon, each person gets a make over that includes getting a new dress for the event, getting their make-up, hair and nails done to make them feel extra special for their big day. “I guess I am a great example for the American Heart Association because once I stopped eating sugar and started working out, my cholesterol dropped significantly,” Amy said. Not only did her cholesterol take a nose dive, but also her pant size as well. “I have lost more inches than pounds because I am building muscle.” Taking care of your body shouldn’t feel like a chore but a necessity. Even if heart disease doesn't run in your family, you can start making changes to your everyday life by eliminate your chances of having heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, 627,000 women have been saved from heart disease and 330 women per day are beating the odds of death. Why not make a change and challenge yourself to a long, healthy life and eliminate your chance of being another “statistic?” Be you and better you!

#Hashtag Your Way to
Business Success
By: Jillian Koeneman
As career-focused women, chances are you have seen a #hashtag before. Once solely used in the Twitterverse, hashtags are now used in media of all forms from TV commercials and print ads, to YouTube videos and every popular social media platform. But do you know how they work or the best way to use them to boost your business? Hashtags allow consumers to tag posts, tweets, pictures and videos with a hash symbol (#) followed by a word or phrase, such as #SassyMagazine. This allows the social media site (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Pinterest) to group together or categorize anything posted with that hashtag; this makes it similar to search for related posts. Just like consumers search for things inside Google, hashtags enable people to search and discover content that is important to them within social media.
“Hashtags can connect businesses with the people that care about their product category or industry.
For small businesses that lack large marketing budgets, hashtags are a free way to build a relationship inside social media with customers and potential customers. Hashtags can connect businesses with the people that care about their product category or industry. For example, if your company makes dog toys and you are able to post relevant content using the #dogs hashtag, the millions of people scanning and following the #dogs hashtag now have access to your content. Similarly, if you have a local restaurant business, you can use geographic hashtags, such as #Michiana or #DTSB, to get your content in front of those social media users most likely to dine in your establishment. Geographic hashtags also work great when attempting to garner a relationship with your local news media, as journalists are often trained to scan and follow geographic hashtags related to their reporting areas. So who uses hashtags? According to a survey conducted by RadiumOne, 58 percent of respondents utilize hashtags on a regular basis and 71 percent of regular hashtag users do so from their mobile devices. 43 percent of respondents think hashtags are useful and 34% use them to search/follow categories and brands of personal interest.

Here are three ways your small business can #hashtag its way to success:
DAY SPA
#Promotions and #Contests According to RadiumOne, 51% of people said that they would be more willing to share company hashtags if they were awarded discounts or chances at prizes if they were to do so. Encourage people to use a hashtag related to your promotion or contest in exchange for the ability to win something. Hashtags are also trackable so you can see how effective your promotion is.
#Conversation Social media and hashtags open up the social media world to better conversations between you and your customers. Use a hashtag to provide a gateway to two-way, mutually beneficial conversation.
#Events Events are great opportunities for creating
conversation and awareness around hashtags. Create a hashtag for your event well before the actual date because you can generate content and discussion about the event before it even begins.
During the event, encourage participants to use the hashtag with signage. People in attendance both physically and via the web will be able to follow the conversation.

This Month's Question:
After a long day at work, I don’t feel like going out with my co-workers and socializing, but after-hours get-togethers almost seem mandatory at my workplace. What are some ways I can get to know my co-workers and get ahead in my career without making myself crazy?
I Emily Hughes Smith Founder, Naissance Naissance was formed by Emily Hughes Smith, with the idea of creating design and brand identity solutions that focus on the emotional impact of messaging and how people connect with brands. truly believe that some of the best work is not done in the office but actually out in social settings. But, I understand it is hard to juggle it all. I am also a parent and that job is a major priority for men and women alike. Personal time is deserved no matter the circumstance with or without children. And honestly, there are times when I do feel, as you mentioned, like I am "making myself crazy." Although I truly enjoy and thrive on the social engagements with friends and colleagues in business, I do realize that this is not the case for all of my associates. I would never expect him or her to participate in after hour events, let alone view these as mandatory to get ahead in one's career. To better answer your question, a responsive manager should realize that a well-rested colleague is a better engaged and productive colleague. And knowing yourself well enough to say "no thank you" (politely) should be well received and understood. It is fair to say that you need personal time to recharge and decline the invite. Please note, however, that these social events give you the opportunity to truly engage with one another, network and creatively problem solve in

a new environment. You also get to know people better on a personal level, which will help you read them better too, along with learning ways to better collaborate in regard to skill sets and personal interests. It may also open the doors to new opportunities in the business you may not have been aware of due to being caught up in the day-to-day operations. It is always acceptable to turn down social engagements since these are not part of your job responsibility, but do not decline them all. If after hours do not work well due to the demands of career and family, come up with other creative solutions to stay connected and engaged during the work day. Invite a different colleague out to lunch once a month. Take a half hour weekly walk with some co-workers. Start a book club. I know there are many do's and don'ts on social media, but connect with people on these platforms if it is acceptable within your company policies. By you suggesting the event, you offer an attractive alternative to connect with your colleagues. So be pro-active and engaged and view it as an area of your professional development, even if it is not during after-hours.

day. However, never attending social events might make your coworkers feel you do not like them or that you are standoffish. This is not a good combination for collaboration or team building. Instead of feeling obligated to attend every social gathering, try attending an after-hours gathering for an hour or two every couple of weeks. If the after-hours gathering is difficult for you, stop by a coworker’s office to say “hello.” People can really get to know each other in just a three minute conversation. Another way to build relationships during work hours is to have lunch with a coworker. While it is hard to pull ourselves away for lunch breaks, inviting a small group of coworkers out to lunch one day a week can build great rapport (but try to avoid “office talk!”). You can build relationships with coworkers both in and out of the office with balance. Just make sure that each time you interact with a coworker, it is a genuine experience. Remember, it is about quality, not quantity!

5th Annual Women of Hope Luncheon Supports the Bridge of Hope Program at Hannah’s House On March 20, 2014, over 200 friends gathered at Windsor Park Conference Center in Mishawaka for the 5th Annual Women of Hope Luncheon and Silent Auction honoring Linda Baechle, President and CEO, YWCA North Central Indiana. The luncheon and silent auction was led by Emcee Trisha Sloma of WNDU morning TV which supports the Bridge of Hope program at Hannah’s House. Hannah’s House is a maternity home in Mishawaka. Linda Baechle is a powerful, passionate and dedicated advocate for women and their children and was instrumental in bringing together the St. Joseph County and Elkhart County YWCAs to form the YWCA North Central Indiana. The merger has meant an increase in domestic violence, sexual assault and economic empowerment services and programs for Elkhart County women and has made YWCA North Central Indiana a regional advocate for women and their children. A highlight of the luncheon was the featured guest speaker, Dr. Paul Wright. Cardiologist Paul Wright
and author of Mother Teresa’s Prescription, Finding Happiness and Peace is Service talked about his time spent with Mother Teresa. His life was forever changed when Mother Teresa shared her message his purpose in life, indeed, the purpose of each of us, is to serve others with compassion. Dr. Wright’s message was so well received that when lunch for four with Dr. Wright was up for auction, six groups bid $1,000 each for the opportunity to meet with Dr. Wright. The Women of Hope Luncheon and Silent Auction concluded with a successful net profit of over $26,000 for the Bridge of Hope program. The Bridge of Hope program is a church based approach to ending homelessness for single mothers. This nationally based program serves eight mothers and their families concurrently locally by providing rental assistance, case management and support of a local mentoring church. 7th Annual
Homeward Bound 5K Run/Walk
Community Agencies Collaborate To Make An Impact County Commissioner Andy Kostielney and Homeward Bound Chairman Duane Wilson join in on the fun.
The Borger Family came out in full force.
Many superheroes descended upon the Northeast neighborhood the morning of Saturday April 5th. They were here to put their collective efforts together to raise awareness for affordable housing and raise money for the homeless in St. Joseph County by participating in the 7th Annual Homeward Bound 5k Run/walk. Homeward Bound, a part of the Indiana Association for Indiana Association for Community and Economic Development, is a series of annual events that take place in communities throughout Indiana to raise funding for and awareness about affordable housing and homelessness. The St. Joseph County Chapter, chaired by Duane Wilson, is an effort of six local agencies whose mission is to address the needs of this population. For the past four years, The Robinson Community Learning Center, the Center for the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity, Hope Ministries, Hannah’s House and Bridges Out of Poverty collaborate to impact the community. “The day was evidence of true collaboration that benefitted the whole community,” Wilson said. “The partnership between our six agencies and the local colleges and universities proved to be beneficial to the community.” This year’s collective effort went beyond the six agencies above, five local colleges were recruited to help with the cause. Excited about the Superhero theme, Scott Hancock of IU South Bend, Alex Coccia of the University of Notre Dame, Kathleen Sullivan of Saint Mary’s College, Jacob Busscher of Bethel College and Molly White of Holy Cross College as honorary chairs and brought at least 20 students from their school to join in on fun. Thanks to their efforts, we had over 300 participants and volunteers. Consequently, Homeward Bound raised more than $22,000 that will be split between the six agencies that organized the event. “Additionally, event sponsors Fifth Third Bank along with support from OSMC, Martin’s Super Market, Specialized Staffing and Lake City Bank demonstrate the breath of impact that can happen with committed community partners,” Wilson said.
