Are You Ready for Retirement? Check out these retirement facts from NerdWallet.com:
• On average, women live seven years longer than men, which means they need to plan for a longer retirement. • Women are still earning less than men in the workplace (we know, we know)—so plan on contributing more to your retirement account. • More time out of the workplace caregiving for family = increased need for retirement contributions. • The earlier you start saving for retirement, the better! Usually, earnings are compounded exponentially. • A financial planner may help if you don’t know where to start!

What Is Glitz & Sass?
The annual Glitz & Sass Holiday Fashion Show is the ideal Girl's Night Out with your favorite gal pals, featuring all of a girl’s best friends— delicious hors d'oeuvres, festive cocktails, shopping, fun and fashion! After the luxury of valet parking, your night out at Glitz & Sass will begin by walking the red carpet, where loads of “paparazzi” from Classic Image Photography will be awaiting to snap a picture of you looking effortlessly beautiful, of course. From there, you will be swept off to enjoy a night of flowing cocktails, endless shopping and loads of prizes, giveaways and fun with your friends as you take in the latest fashions, straight off the runway. And did we mention there would be wine? Along with the main attraction of the evening—the prominent runway where models will highlight local fashions for winter and beyond, the night will feature the 2014 class of Sassy Magazine’s “Women to Watch,” support for the Go Red Foundation against heart disease in women, local sassy boutiques, 8 november 2013 | SASSY
fabulous prizes and bottles of Tiedemann Wines, the exclusive supplier of Glitz & Sass.
A History With Sass
So how did Glitz & Sass get its start? “I wanted to bring an event to Michiana that hadn’t been seen before,” explains Betsy Tavernier, publisher of The FAMILY Magazines. “Sassy Magazine represents all that is sassy, so of course, we needed an equally sassy event!” “This fashion show is modeled after the New York Fashion Week fashion shows,” she goes on to explain. “It’s NOT your typical mother and daughter fashion show banquet! Glitz & Sass is high-end fashion! We have awesome music and fabulous fashions with stunning models of all ages, shapes and sizes and ideas for real women in Michiana to step up their fashion sense a notch for the upcoming holiday and winter seasons. Our local boutiques here in Michiana really are spectacular and we also like to help promote our local fashionista boutique owners. Michiana knows fashion!”
We’re Bringing Sassy Back
One of the best parts about the Glitz & Sass Fashion show is that each year, it is brought to you by the sassy women who are running the local boutiques in our community. This year’s boutiques representing Glitz & Sass are:
• Flourish Boutique • Inspire Me • Jules Boutique • Clothes Mentor • Stephenson's of Elkhart • Boling Vision Center • Cinnamon Stick And to complete this year’s event—which will be the best yet, we can assure you—the fashion show will be held at the newly renovated Morris Inn on the campus of Notre Dame, for a truly elegant night.
Shop`Till You Drop
And what would a girls’ night out be without shopping? The Glitz & Sass Fashion show features shopping all night long in any of the seven boutique booths. And to make your spending a little bit sweeter, a donation to the Michiana chapter of Go Red, the national organization fighting heart disease in women, which will be presented on stage. A portion of the proceeds from each ticket, along with a donation from Sassy Magazine, will be included. We’re seeing red that night, ladies!
Sassy Giveaways!
Girls gotta love some sassy giveaways, right? In addition to each sassy woman receiving the ultimate sassy loot bag, packed full of special surprises, all of the participating Glitz & Sass boutiques and sponsors will be giving away tons of fabulous prizes, including the grand prize giveaway—a Spa Package to The Centre PC in Mishawaka, valued at $3,000. Ahhh, I can hear the relaxation and pampering now…
Women To Watch
Every year at the Glitz & Sass Fashion show, Sassy Magazine highlights their upcoming year’s class of “Women to Watch.” The “Women to Watch” class is composed of local women in the Michiana community who embody the Sassy sprit—combining work, life, balance and sass. "There are so many inspiring and ambitious women in our community that truly make an incredible difference with their commitment to excellence,” says Betsy Tavernier, publisher of the FAMILY Magazines. “Women to Watch is a great way to recognize these fabulous women in a big way each year. We are excited to introduce and announce our third year of Women to Watch at the Fashion Show. This is an incredible group of women that are certainly deserving of this honor." Each of the 2014 Women to Watch were nominated for entry—through friends, family or colleagues. This year’s final class with be introduced on the stage at the Glitz & Sass Fashion show, highlighting each women and her accomplishments. Along with receiving tons of fabulous prizes and
recognition, one of the 2014 Women to Watch will also be chosen as this year’s cover girl for the December issue of Sassy. The winner is chosen by voting, so watch Sassy's Facebook page for the voting to begin!

wardrobe
ESSENTIALS By: Kathy Friend
Over the years, I have helped hundreds of women transform their wardrobes into perfectly functional, fabulous collections of outfit options. There is a common thread to all great wardrobes: a balance between basics and statement pieces. After trying to remember all the things (and reasons why) that make up a great wardrobe, I have compiled a list. This list isn’t intended to be a “run out to the mall now and buy all these things”, but rather it should be viewed as a “work- in-progress checklist".
PANTS
1. Jeans – something a little sassy, boot cut or flared. I suggest finding something with a bold contrast stitch on the inside of the leg. 2. Dark Basic Skinny Jeans – these are an essential regardless of your age or personal style. The perfect skinny jean will do double duty as leggings and can be dressed up with a great jacket and heels. 3. Leggings – need I say more? I honestly think you should have several pairs of basic black leggings in your wardrobe: ankle length thicker fabric, knee length and one with something different (like leather or embellishment). 4. Trouser – call this your basic pant. Even for those of us who don’t wear pants very often, there is always an occasion we need a good pant that isn’t a jean. I suggest something in black.
10 november 2013 | SASSY
TOPS
5. Denim Shirt – the denim shirt has made a strong comeback in fashion, and I am thrilled! The denim shirt should be a thinner fabric, with a long sleeve you can easily roll up. The denim shirt can dress down a very dressed up skirt, and is simply something that looks good on everyone. 6. White Blouse – another basic and something I searched a long time for. It is a good idea to have two white blouses: one that is a little longer (tunic length) that you can wear with leggings, and one that is a slimmer fit that would be perfect under a jacket or sweater. 7. White Tee – when the white blouse is too much, try the white tee! Find something that is made of a good fabric (spend a little money on this) that fits you well (i.e., don’t buy it oversized). 8. Embellished Tee – for some this might be a striped tee; for others it might be something with some kind of sparkle on the front. Whatever your style personality, the embellished tee will be a favorite in your closet. 9. Cardigan – what color do you know looks amazing on you? Blue? Pink? THAT is the color you will need to find in a cardigan. Use as a layering piece to break up monochromatic looks. 10. Tunic – the tunic is something that you might be able to wear with leggings and flats, or with tights and boots. In the summer months, your tunic might be a great bathing suit cover-up! 11. Chunky Sweater – Ya know those cold weekends when a warm sweater, boots and skinny jeans are perfect? THAT is the sweater you need in your closet. 12. Cami – If I am being honest, you probably need several camis. I wear one just about every day. Wear under those tops with plunging necklines (that might be a bit much for work) and of course, use as a layering piece.
JACKETS
13. Jean Jacket – basic, no embellishment, looks chic with a pencil skirt and a crisp white blouse (of course with oodles of jewelry). 14. Basic Jacket – the basic jacket should be in your signature neutral color (brown, black or navy for example), and about hip length. 15. Leather Jacket – the great thing about leather is it has become very affordable. The fauxleather options are plentiful! Find a jacket that has some rugged details, maybe in a motorcycle style. 16. Chanel-esque Jacket – You know the style. This is something you could add in as an afterthought to your wardrobe, or be a key signature piece in your closet. It can be the thing that you wear when you need to look like a million bucks (with a pencil skirt), or be something you wear with jeans when your mood is a little sophisticated sassy. 17. Spa Jacket – This is the thing I see missing from most wardrobes. A sporty jacket that you can wear when everything else seems to be too formal.
DRESSES
18. LBD – or LRD or LBD (you get the picture). A basic nofrills dress that looks amazing on you. Something in a color that is perfect for your skin tone, which is easily dressed up or down. 19. Day Dress – I suggest a wrap dress. This style looks great on everyone and is very easy to find.
20. “Look At Me” Dress
A party dress (that isn’t black) with some kind of glitz and shine on it. This might be the thing you wear to a cocktail party or holiday party.
SKIRTS
21. Pencil Skirt – the workhorse of your wardrobe. I suggest black. If a pencil skirt isn’t a style you are fond of, try an A-Line style. 22. Patterned Skirt – maybe a tweed or floral, whatever your style dictates, this is a skirt you love to live in. 23. Little Knit Skirt – or two, or three! This is the little black skirt you pull on with a tee and flip flops in the summer, or pair with tights and a sweater in the winter. It is what you want to wear when it is in the laundry.
JEWELRY
32. Statement Necklace – Something that is neutral, but ‘wow’ enough that people notice. Look for something that is a ‘collar’ style. 33. Long Necklace – I like one that has a few charms. 34. Bangle Bracelets – Stack them on your wrist, and your outfit gets at least 5 style points! 35. Everyday Pendant Necklace – This is the necklace you wear just about every day or you can layer with other things. 36. Right Hand Ring – Something big and bold that tells your style story. It might be a big flower or a cluster of diamonds. 37. Stud Earrings – Diamond, yes I am giving you permission to get a pair of diamond earrings (or glass that just looks like diamond studs). When you have no idea what earrings to wear, pull these out of your jewelry box. Trust me. I wear mine every single day (even to the gym). 38. Hoop Earrings – When you want to make your outfit a little more casual, or you feel like your look just needs a little something more, in walks the hoop earring. 39. Signet Ring – I believe that this classic ‘initial ring’ is something every woman should have…and if you don’t, it would make a great gift. (hint, hint.)
HANDBAGS
40. Basic Every Day Handbag – Something that is big enough that you can shove a bottle of water and a snack inside, but not so big that it could be mistaken for a gym bag. 41. Weekend Clutch – This is something you can use with your LBD or jeans, white tee and sassy heels. 42. Power Color Purse – What is the dominant color in your wardrobe? Red? Blue? This is the color you need in a handbag. When you are in one of those “I am wearing all black” moods, use this to perk up your mood.
UNDER THINGS
24. Bra Wardrobe – A wise investment is to have a few great fitting bras. Skip the white ones (really…no need for them). Be sure you have at least two nude and one black bra. Convertible straps are a must! 25. Undies Wardrobe – Everyone needs some undies that will eliminate panty lines…need I say more? 26. Compression Garment – This is a fancy word for Spanx.
ACCESSORIES
27. Black Skinny Belt – Make sure this key piece in your accessory arsenal has a buckle that can be worn over things. 28. Brown Braided Thick Belt – I love wearing my braided belt buckled and looped through (looks like I tied it around my waist). 29. Trendy Sunglasses – In today’s sunglass world, that might be the aviator or the Jackie-O. 30. Scarf (or Pashmina) – I suggest you have two of these in your treasure chest. One in a "pop" color, and a basic neutral (like black). 31. Dark Opaque Tights – They key is opaque, a thick tight that you can’t see your skin through. I like the Spanx version (serves double duty!)
SHOES
43. Black Pump – basic, timeless. 44. Boots in Your Signature Neutral – Riding boots are something you will wear time and time again.
45. Non-Athletic Tennis Shoe – Ya know those cute little flats that kinda look like tennis shoes but they really are more of a ballet flat? That is what you need. 46. Sassy Heel – Something that makes you fees sexy and alive. And, it’s OK if you can only stand for 10 minutes and take 15 steps in them. You should be sitting in these shoes to show them off (wink!). 47. Stiletto With Sparkle – I will admit I am a sparkly shoe addict. I have far too many. But I do wear them with everything! Wear with your sassy jeans and a basic tee on the weekend, and of course with your ‘Look At Me’ dress. 48. Neutral Wedge – When you don’t know what shoes to wear, go for the neutral wedge! 49. Shoe-Bootie – This shoe is one of the season’s biggest style stories. Wear with everything, yes EVERYTHING (including skirts!) 50. Flip Flop – Make sure your flips are of a grown-up variety, something you can wear all day without worrying about the damage they might cause your feet. SASSY | November 2013

ovember is the beginning of all the holiday parties we will be hosting and attending. If you are attending a holiday party, you pretty much just get a bottle of wine and you are ready to have a great time. On the other hand, if you are hosting a dinner party, it is quite different. You wake up very early, finish cleaning and decorating the house, start cooking/baking, get the kids situated, cook and clean some more and then the guests arrive! How does your face look? Did you get your makeup and hair ready before all of the commotion or do you make sure there are 10 minutes in your schedule to put yourself together?
By: Bethza Seminario
You spent all this amount of time preparing and making the most loving environment and food for your family and friends. They may be coming from out of town or you may have not seen them in years. Unfortunately, picture time may come and you do not want to be in them, because you do not feel you look your best. Let’s change that right here and right now. These steps to get your in-home holiday party look should not take more than 10 minutes…budget an extra five minutes and you may just find yourself with one heck of an after-party!
What to Have Ready: • Makeup wipes ( baby wipes will do fine too) • Your everyday moisturizer (if you use a tinted one or a beauty balm, that works too) • Brow liner – blonde/taupe • Waterproof pencil eyeliner – brown /black • Waterproof mascara – dark brown/black • Concealer – your skin tone • Blush – peach or rose • Powder • Lip liner and balm
16 november 2013 | SASSY
I know these instructions and steps are very basic, but they are recommended mostly if you were planning on skipping your makeup application or to just go with what you may have applied early in the morning. This may also be useful if you are completely clueless on what to even apply!
30
Seconds
1. 2.
Wipe. Let’s start by wiping off any of yesterday’s leftover makeup, cooking oil, flour or whatever else may have splashed all over you face from your busy day.
30
Rub. Get your favorite moisturizer, beauty balm cream or tinted moisturizer and rub it first on the palm of your hands to warm it up and then apply all over your face and neck. This part will feel so good! Let it absorb for now and let’s bring those eyes to life!

3.

3 Minutes 1
Minute
Fill. Fill in your brows first. Grab your favorite eyebrow pencil and/or powder and start filling them out. Remember to choose a color that will warm up your face. If you are a brunette, stay away from harsh dark browns or blacks. Nice polished brows are a MUST—they ensure that your entire look is well put together. Plan to go one or two days before the big day to get them shaped, waxed, trimmed, threaded, tweezed or whatever makes them rock for you!
4.
Draw. Draw a thin line as close as possible to your top lash line with your waterproof eyeliner. This will create a nice definition to your eyes and will still look natural. If you cannot live without eyeliner inside of your waterline, go ahead and apply it. Now with your ring finger, smudge the edges for a softer look.
5.
Curl. Curl your lashes and it’s time for mascara! The waterproof formula is extremely important for these events, because you do not have time to be worrying about retouching the flakiness, smudges, black happy tears and so on. You need guarantees on this!
6.
Line. Line your lips and fill them all up! Choose a tone that is warm and will give you a nice finish. I absolutely love rosy and peachy lip tones. The lip balm will keep your lips looking and feeling soft. You are going to be eating and drinking anyway, so if the lip liner has a nice durability, you are all set!
7.
Conceal.
Now, just look at yourself straight in the mirror and inspect your skin. Do you need to conceal anything?
30 Seconds 1
Minute
a. Answer: No…you are so lucky! So just add a little blush on your apple cheeks and blend. Do not apply it on your cheekbones, as it will make you look angry! Blush is not meant to contour your face. Then, add powder on your T-zone only if needed. b. Answer: YES to the YES! Use a concealer that matches your skin tone. Concealers are much more pigmented and have a heavier coverage than foundation, so you will only need little bits of it to spot treat where needed. Now grab your powder and seal the deal so your concealer doesn’t move. Smile and apply your blush! Again, only on your apple cheeks.
TOTAL:
10 Minutes and Done!
Remember to practice as much as you can until you can get this process down to 10 minutes. I hope that all of you enjoy this Thanksgiving and other holidays with your loved ones. Be truly thankful for what you already have been given in life! Until next time, Bethza Seminario #SeñoritaBethza
Extra 5 minutes? Foundation:
5
Minutes
I can hear already many of you asking or screaming “what about the foundation?” If you have to have it, add it to the moisturizer step. Remember, foundation is meant to even out your complexion and not to cover up flaws!
Highlighter : There are a variety of beautiful highlighter tones – soft pinks, pearl peaches and golds. They are meant to add that gorgeous lighting and glow that celebrities and Victoria Secret models have. With your finger or brush, add a little on the inside corners of your eyes. Also add a little bit above your cheekbones and the cupid bow of your lips. Remember, a little bit goes a long way. SASSY | November 2013

Heather Bachman,
Checking In With Our Cover Girl: Cancer Warrior
By: Chaunie Brusie
I
n September, we were honored to bring you the courageous story of Heather Bachman, a mother of two who is currently battling an aggressive form of breast cancer called triple-negative. Heather opted for a double mastectomy and underwent chemotherapy. She credits her mother, who passed away from breast cancer when Heather was a young girl, for being the guardian angel who helped Heather detect her cancer early enough for treatment. We will be following Heather on her journey to recovery every month here in Sassy and if you missed her story in our September issue, please visit MichianaSassy.com to read it. When we last checked in with Heather, she was recovering from some complications following her double mastectomy and implant surgery. Heather had been able to receive both her mastectomy and breast implants at the same time, so as Heather related, she was able to “go to sleep with breasts and wake up with breasts,” a seemingly small thing that to Heather, made all the difference.
A journey of healing
Unfortunately, the incision from one of her implants wasn’t healing, even after six months. “My implant wasn’t healing and they thought about doing pressure chambers,” explains Heather. “Unfortunately, my insurance wouldn’t cover it and my doctor actually felt the problem was with the implant itself. So I ended up going under again and getting a new implant and was healed two weeks later.” Miraculously, after suffering through six months of a wound that would not heal, Heather was relieved when the second surgery healed in a mere two weeks. Although Heather is enjoying her healing time, the road to recovery is fraught with bumps. Heather explains that she recently was diagnosed with something pleurisy, which is an inflammation of the lungs that is H eather Bachman common in cancer & p. 20 patients as their immune system recovers from chemotherapy. “I was AL ANIM influence scared and it was hard n desig s ' Get WILD in your home to breathe,” recounts Heather. NO17
MOTHER
CANCER WARRIOR
“Triple-negative can often come back in the lungs, so my thoughts went right away there; in my mind, every ache and pain means ‘it’s back.’” Fortunately, Heather’s pleurisy was just the result of a common cold and her stillstruggling immune system, but the reality of living with the fear of cancer continues to be a daily struggle for Heather.
And what’s the next step in Heather’s recovery?
“The only thing I have left to do is to have the nipple replaced and fat grafts put in,” Heather explains. Because of her double mastectomy, there is no breast tissue left to camouflage the implants, so the procedure can produce what is called “rippling,” when the skin surrounding the implant pulls and causes a rippling effect. To counteract the rippling effect, Heather will undergo a mini-liposuction of sorts to remove fat from her stomach for use in her breasts, as well as an eventual nipple replacement.
Taking a deep breath
While the remainder of Heather’s procedures will take place within the next couple of months, Heather explains that right now, she is just taking a deep breath. “I’m kind of just at a place where I want to take a breather and enjoy healing right now,” Heather says. “Right now, it’s just wonderful to be able to take a bath. I’m enjoying being healed.”
Playing with her hair
For Heather and her family, one of the most exciting events of her recovery occurred when her hair started growing back recently. “I got me a little hair,” laughs Heather. “It’s somewhat curly and it came back a lot lighter.” Heather
explained to me that although her hair wasn’t curly before, she is experiencing what many cancer patients dub a “chemo curl” after chemotherapy treatment. “The chemo damages the hair follicle, so the hair comes out differently,” says Heather. “My hair is somewhat short, but I can tell that it is wavy.” Curl or no curl, Heather is just grateful that her hair is coming back. ”I’m pretty exited about it,” she admits. “I’ve missed my hair—and I’m finally able to flip up the back!” Her daughters are also enjoying their mom’s hair regrowth. “They love playing with my hair!” exclaims Heather. “I never realized how much they missed it.”
A new normal
For Heather and her daughters, it’s the little things like playing hair stylist that make their days so precious. “The kids are into school and life has kind of returned to normal for them,” says Heather. “Mom is doing homework and taking them to practice. We are just enjoying being back to normal.”

Getting Started In
Art
By: Michelle Wegner
Life as art is about being a Noticer. It’s about showing others around us what we see and how we see the world uniquely. Every star in the universe is different, every snowflake is different, every human being bears a different fingerprint and I think that’s on purpose. We have a unique fingerprint on our perception of the world around us.
O
prah reminded us all a few years ago to “Remember our Spirits.” Remember when she took the last five minutes of her show and lit candles and got all warm and fuzzy and talked about her “Spirit”? Everyone has a soul, a spirit, a body–each part of us equally important. Every single one of us, myself included, forgets that we have a soul-self that is longing to speak.
“We each have a unique soul; each soul expresses her voice differently to the world.” Art is a way I unleash my soul, take a minute to breathe and let all the business, deadlines, carpool schedules and family schedule conflicts and chaos go. It’s when I go to my “Happy Place”. Where I try to connect with my soul again.
“For myself, I live and breathe art. But if you want to know a secret, I’ll let you in on it: I really stink at lots of “artsy” stuff.”
20 november 2013 | SASSY
I’m sort of allergic to paint, so I had to give up my painting career about a year in. I am not a very good sketcher. My doodles resemble a Kindergartner’s and teachers really never asked me back to help cut and paste stuff for my kids’ classes because I cannot cut a straight line. But I notice stuff. I notice everything. Like an orange leaf lying in the grass, or the way the clouds are drifting over my house. I see beauty in spiders and ants and bugs and birds and trees and wind. So I take pictures. Lots and lots of pictures. Photography for me is a sort of prayer. A thank you to the Creator of it all. To let the Creator know I’ve noticed. That I’m opening my soul to the beauty around me. Photography fills my soul and helps me breathe. Every person is different. Every creative expression is different. For women like us in Michiana, there are lots of ways to find your own soul’s unique expression. Most are very affordable, and some are even free! Here are some fun and very do-able ideas even for non-artsy type people:
Take a class.
A lot of my friends have tried Wine & Canvas, an evening or event you can attend with friends or coworkers, drink some wine and receive instruction on how to paint an incredible painting. You can walk away with a masterpiece that very night!
Flourish Boutique hosted a night like this for women to get together, drink some wine, paint some pretty stuff and do a little shopping. Flourish plans on doing an event like this again soon, so keep your eyes open!
And some final advice for whatever artistic endeavor you head toward: • Start simple. • Don't be discouraged. • Don't be bashful. • Try and try and try until you find something that calms your soul, renews your mind and stretches your imagination. • Share your art. You never know who will be motivated by what you create.
Every soul is an artist, a Noticer. Notice what you do and share it first with you, and then with the rest of us. The beauty you bring into the world will inspire us and cause us to know you and the world we live in just a little bit better.
Feeling inspired? Snoop around Pinterest.
There are amazing and easy ideas for any kind of artist you want to be.
Ask a friend.
Are your friends artsy? Ask them to teach you what they love to do. Do they knit or crochet? Sew? Cook? Paint? Ask them to instruct you in the basics next time you get together. I guarantee they would love to share their passion for their art with you.
Check out these reader-submitte d comments to get your own art ideas to feed your soul! “I use Pinterest to help me get ideas sometimes. I'll think about where the art will go in the house, figure out everything I need and then when I have a chance to go out and get it, I usually do the project during nap time or when my kids are tucked in for the night. Most of our art is either pictures we have taken or our own art; it's just a way of making our house feel like us and when friends come over they always mention, ‘this house is so you'!" ~Brinn “I love to create collages with mixed media . I could spend all day doing it. I wish I made more time to create. It is definitely therapeutic.” ~Stacy “I really enjoy painting, but can't find time (or peace and quiet) at home to do it so I've started going to painting events at U Can Paint 2. I have three comp leted canvases on my wall at work. A nice treat to go in, paint (even though I am not that great) and leave with a finish ed product.” ~Jennifer Brown
Art journaling.
Get a journal (preferably with no lines) and doodle away. Fill every page with a word, thought, idea or poem. There are no rules or time limits. Express yourself without judgment.
Make your own music.
If music fills your soul, make some. It can be fun, silly or serious. The only rule of music filling your soul is that there are no rules. For us as a family, music sets the tone of our household. I prefer wordless quiet music in the background to keep my heart, mind and soul connected, while the rest of my family prefers loud, crazy, noisy music. But it fills their souls with genuine happiness. Figure out what works for you. Tune in some music and tune into your soul.
“The latest craze is a smash book journal....j ust a sketch book that you leave out on a desk or even pack with you in a Ziploc baggy with tape, markers or glue. Anything that strikes you as meaningful you glue it in....draw it...write about it... Everything from movie tickets to something overheard while waiting in line. If you're artistic it might be a quick sketch; it’s something I think we're going to try as a family...just to express ourselves a little more.” ~Dalene “When I had kids at home I made sure they had a place to be creative...that gave me room as well! Also taking classes at Fernwood, South Bend art center and Buchanan Art center made it something on my calendar I could n't get out of. Otherwise we women tend to think our creative time isn't important–when it is really what keeps me going.” ~Nancy

ast month my employer announced they were giving us dental insurance coverage. In that instant I became drunk with power and immediately made an appointment for my 6-month cleaning. The appointment was today and I said yes to everything the hygienist threw at me. Stuff I could never afford before like X-rays, fluoride treatments, crowns, bridges and mouth guards. Junk I didn't even need – but who cares? It's covered, right? My laissez-faire attitude ended the moment I lay down in the remote-controlled recliner. Then it suddenly got all real and junk. By the way, just because I care about my teeth doesn't mean I actually enjoy going to the Dentist. In fact, the entire experience is horrifying to me. Thankfully, I'm not as bad as my friend. She has to be knocked out with nitrous just to make it through the parking lot. Me? I only require two things: My fave hygienist Krissey and Dr. McHandsomePants. I'll get to him later, promise, but for now I am in Krissey's gentle hands ... She began with bite-wings for the x-rays. In essence, this is a jumbo chip-clip crammed inside a Ziplock bag with a giant satellite dish attached to it. I held as still as any person could, 4 TIMES, 22 november 2013 | SASSY
with a TV station jutting out of the side of my face. Thankfully the torture was short-lived and she began my cleaning. The word "cleaning" sounds like a nice thing, but in a dental office it's anything but. Armed with a metal squirt gun so entirely powerful it can blast a hole through the Hoover Dam the size of a quarter in roughly 45 seconds, Krissey began her assault. Stressed-out-of-my-mind and clutching my chest from the mild stroke I just suffered, my feet hovered in mid-air as I did my best to endure. However, I was no match for the pistol. I winced. I cringed. I performed wild hand gestures and did creepy glaring-eye signals to alert her to the fact that I needed a break to breathe and to spit. Yeah, spit. Like a Sherriff in an old western movie, I am now disgusting. I'm also drooling like a St. Bernard. Who's wearing a bib. Nevertheless, I was certainly getting an amazing workout. I had no idea I was capable of doing these Billy Blanks/Pilates moves. I will definitely have abs of steel by the end of this procedure, based on the constant ab-curls to reach the spittoon. I bet you cash money that if I went in for a cleaning once a week, I would not only have iridescent teeth, but
also the body of a twenty-year-old. So I tolerated the procedure as the tarter-shrapnel ricochets off my tongue and uvula like it's being pinned down by Al Qaeda. Worse than childbirth, my bare hands bent the steel armrests into upside-down J's as that sound pierced the air. Is there anything more nerveshattering than the din of dental equipment? ACKK! It reminds me of a gang of ally cats fighting on my pillow ... but WAY less comforting. So I did what I had to do and went on the defensive. I began fighting her with the only thing I had at my disposal -- my lower lip. The reality of the mismatch became apparent almost immediately. Her delicate pinky finger was the Arnold Schwarzenegger of antagonists to my fey, nerd lip. (Note to self: Take your lame, bleeping face to the gym and bulk it up, Sistah!!) Just as I was at the end of my rope, she put away the water saber and went old school. Yes, that ancient metal scraper thing met daylight. *Crunch! Chisel! Scrrraaappe* In my head it sounded as if she was sculpting Mount Rushmore in there, but I didn't care. It was far better than the high-pitched timbre of the last mechanism. Or was it? Say hello to the rubber
tooth-polisher. Why do I keep picking the cherry flavored paste? Why? Then, acting as if she's doing me a favor, she announces, "Time for fluoride trays!" Here's what I heard: "Hey, shove this humongous trough of OVERFLOWING gooey gel into your mug for a fortnight and, if you don't gag and turn blue, then I'm just not doing my job correctly." It's the dental equivalent of hazing. Although it's all worth it because I know what's coming next. (Insert a teenage girl jumping up and down and screaming loudly, HERE!) Chelloooo, Doctor! You see, at the end of every oral bungee jump is Dr. McHandsomePants. (Told you I would get to him.) He is beautiful, yet not too gorgeous. Were he so uber attractive that I was uncomfortable just being in the same room with him, then that would be off-putting. Thankfully, my Dentist is "campfire handsome". I made up this descriptor to illustrate the kind of good-looking that ALL women love. Think of it as, I can sit here and bask in the warm glow of your majestic presence without feeling like I will spontaneously combust from your awesomeness. It's the type of attractiveness that makes men "perfect mansome". Oh, and his smile? KER-BLAM! Like a lightning bolt through your soul. Did I mention he's also nice and funny? Yup. The man is a freakin' unicorn. No wonder I have him scheduled through 2030. Sadly, after my short-lived encounter with Dr. McHandsomePants is through, I have to leave. But not before I shamelessly lie to him. Like it or not, there's a conspiracy of denial between Dentist and patient. They will inevitably ask you if you floss every day and you will respond with a confident, resounding "YES!" We both know we are lying (we know this because Krissy has just traipsed through my mouth for the last hour like a CSI investigator) but no one seems to care. Shockingly, none of us ever dare break the overwhelming social convention. Not once has my Dentist called me a big fat liar, and never have I jumped out of his recliner and sprinted screaming towards the exit. It just all seems to works out. Weird, right? While I still think they need confessionals at the checkout desk for us flossing liars, I still love going to the dentist. Even more so now that I have insurance. So go get your teeth cleaned. Gaze into the blue, blue eyes of your handsome dentist and remember to floss. Plus, it's an amazing pre-holiday workout. Trust me!

WINE PAIRING Thanksgiving Edition
By: Elizabeth Carris
Whether you are planning on sitting down to a traditional comfort food-infused family Thanksgiving dinner or switching things up with a more modern twist, don’t forget that there is a wine for every food and for every palate. The key to a great Thanksgiving meal is to keep it simple and creative. In today’s world, there is no limit to what the menu can consist of and the wine should and can be as unique as the food.
Role Play
Wine can play as big of a role as you want it to play. It’s up to you—the hostess of the meal—to decide how intense of a role you want the wine to play with each course. For example, do you want a wine with every course? Do you want to focus on the preferences of your guests, matching each wine with their palates or do you simply want to choose a wine that can cover the entire meal from beginning to end?
One Size Fits All
If you do decide to choose a wine that can please all palates, choose a sparkling wine. It can cover the bases from appetizers straight to dessert. Sparkling wines are becoming increasingly popular with food pairings and can be paired with virtually any meal, giving it elegance and a feel of celebration. Not to mention, a Thanksgiving feast can really give this wine time to shine!
24 november 2013 | SASSY
Thanksgiving Whites
The typical choice for the white wine lovers at your Thanksgiving table is a Sauvignon Blanc, a Riesling or a Gewurztraminer. Sauvignon Blanc is known for its citrus flavors and mineral undertones, which pair perfectly with white turkey meat and mashed potatoes. A Riesling is usually a sweet wine with apple and honey notes that pairs excellently with anything spicy, salty or sweet, while a Gewurztraminer brings an aromatic punch of cinnamon and floral that can stand next to any turkey and gravy. Either choice would be a lovely wine to serve with your Thanksgiving dinner.
Tannins
come from the skins, stems an d seeds of the grapes used to produce the wine. Tannin s are often desc ribed as the compone nt that “dries ou t the mouth” in red wines. They prov ide the sticky or tacky feeling on your to ngue after swallowin g. Tannins are la rg ely responsible for giving a red win e defined structur e or boldness.
Thanksgiving Reds
The top wines for the red wine lovers would be a Pinot Noir, a Syrah or a Zinfandel. Pinot Noir is your go-to traditional red wine for Thanksgiving dinner; it’s a mild-mannered earthy wine with fruit forward notes of cherry and some cocoa that pairs extremely well with traditional turkey and stuffing. Syrah brings a peppery and meaty character to the table that will pair well with dark turkey meat and herb-infused stuffing. And last but not least is the Zinfandel, which picks up in intensity and may be the one to serve to the heartier red wine drinker. Its complexity can pair well with the anything in the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, especially the sides like sweet potatoes or corn casseroles. The way to have a successful Thanksgiving menu is to choose foods you love and that will represent the idea of giving thanks and harvesting of good fortune--so why not pair wines that bring together the family and friends that enjoy both food and wine together? Wine should be looked at as an asset to your food and a companion for the courses you serve. The objective is to have fun and enjoy the day, with one wine or several, and hopefully you have someone to do the dishes!

A Personal Preference
If you feel you’d like to be more daring and choose a red and a white to serve with the meal, it’s best to remember that wine pairing is basically based on personal preference. The goal with pairing a white wine is to find one with well-balanced acidity. A wine’s acidity is what makes your mouth water after sipping opposed to drying it out from the tannins in a red wine. Acidity allows wine to not only maintain its freshness, but it’s also very important in molding its flavor components. A wine with well-balanced acidity is a pleasure to drink and makes for exceptional food pairing versatility. With reds, you are aiming towards a wine with fairly tame tannins that will help support the flavors of the food.

Sugar balance
Probably One of the Best Things You Will Ever Do
detox
By: Liz Nierzwicki
Y
ou have probably heard of the trendy sugar detox. Often it’s a threeweek or one month diet said to rid you of your craving for sweets and help you balance your blood sugar levels. The goal: to get you out of the craving cycle and help you lose weight and keep it off. Sugar detox plans urge you to avoid anything that turns into sugar (glucose) in your body. That not only means cookies and donuts, but also most fruit, low-fat dairy, and refined grains. The reason? To get you out of that sugar craving cycle and balance your blood sugar levels, which will in turn help you have more energy, lose weight, sleep better and the benefits go on and on. You say you can't live without your daily sugar kick, so you grab that Red Bull or sugar-loaded donut thinking it actually gives you that “buzz”. But are you really getting the energy you need? Hardly! That midday Red Bull, candy bar or sugar-loaded snack sets you up to continue the detrimental sugar cycle of bad eating.
Why Is Sugar Bad?
• Sugar is an empty calorie – meaning it does not give your body anything to take from it and it provides no nutritional value whatsoever. • Sugar is NOT on the food pyramid, meaning we don’t need it. Sugar is NOT a recommended "food/nutrient" to consume, but good carbohydrates are. • When we take in sugar, our body needs to expend energy to process the molecules consumed. • Sugar lowers our immune system, making it harder to fight off disease. When we consume sugar-loaded foods or drinks, we greatly disrupt natural metabolic processes.
So How Can I Successfully Do a Sugar Detox?
Here’s why:
The fact is, your body doesn’t want more than one teaspoon of sugar in the body at any given time and when it gets more than that (from sugar or carbohydrates that turn into sugar), here is what happens: 1. Our blood glucose (blood sugar) level increases (we feel high on energy). 2. Our pancreas releases insulin in response to the sugars/carbs we have eaten. 3. The insulin released begins to take the glucose from our blood stream and brings it to our cells. (We then crash and begin to feel shaky, dizzy or tired. This is where people reach for more to regain that sugar high, but what they really need is stability in their blood stream.) 4. Our blood sugar level returns to the approximate 1 teaspoon of glucose while the rest of the unused glucose is stored in our cells as fat.
Think you don't have a sweet tooth, but yet you crave salty foods like bagels, chips or French fries? These starchy foods are refined carbs that also feed this cycle.
26 november 2013 | SASSY
Some people need to start out slow while others can begin cold turkey with a yes/no food list. If you need to start slow, cut out all cookies, cakes, pastries, donuts and incorporate more veggies, fiber and protein into your diet. Learn how to make a couple new recipes. Do this for a couple of weeks and then slowly begin to cut out other refined carbs. When you are tempted with anything sweet, just say no! Every time you do this, YOU WIN, and your brain will remember that as a win and you will start to build a stronger willpower.
Retrain Your Taste Buds
As we change our diet, different foods begin to taste delicious to us. Your body will begin to crave green leafy vegetables, rich proteins or healthful fats. In fact, once this happens and you have anything (even mildly) sweet, it will almost be too much. You will be surprised how little of a sweet/treat you will then be able to tolerate.
Let Protein Help
It’s important for you to have adequate amounts of protein in your diet. Protein contains amino acids that are the building blocks of every cell in the body. Eating protein is an easy way to curb any craving because it will fill you up and protein foods digest more slowly, keeping you feeling full for longer.
because insulin causes the body to store nutrients into our cells. Therefore, ALL sugars (caloric or not), carbohydrates and artificial sweeteners can contribute to weight gain and/or prohibit weight loss, so be careful what you put in your mouth.
Getting Through The Healing Crisis
Fill Up On Fiber
Fiber is very important all of the time, and especially on a sugar detox because it will help keep foods moving through your system and will help remove toxins from your gut and colon. Fiber will also help to keep you full longer. Make sure to drink plenty of water with any fiber intake. You can get fiber from vegetables (and fruits when not on the detox) and/ or fiber supplements.
Workout
Exercise can't "cure" a sugar addict. But it could change the way you eat in general. As people who work out start to feel better, they often feel a desire to eat more healthy foods. During times of physical activity, our bodies can use the glucose for energy. The majority of time when we eat sugars that glucose is stored as FAT! This fat accumulates over time, leading to weight gain and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which is the start of a host of chronic health issues like diabetes, high-blood cholesterol and triglycerides. This is why I recommend eating carbs only around the time you will be working out to fuel or replace lost glucose. Most other times the excess carbs will be stored as fat.
Does That Mean I Can Have Fake Sugar?
ALL sweeteners elicit sugar cravings in your brain and leave you craving more sugar so the cycle continues. In addition, artificial sweeteners are man-made chemicals that have been identified as the cause of negative health problems including but not limited to: • Migraines & Headaches, Weakness & Fatigue, • Change in Heart Rate, Changes in Mood, • Change in Vision, Convulsions & Seizures, Joint Pain • Memory Loss, Sleep Problems, Insomnia
Research suggests that any sweet sensation can cause an insulin release in the body, whether it is a caloric or non-caloric sweetener. When the body releases insulin, we are in storage mode
When you first cut back on sugar, you may feel bad at first and this is called the “healing crisis”. You may feel tired, listless or edgy. Luckily, this will only last a few days, so power through and use your goals to help you get through. If your goal is to fit into that cute little dress for a holiday party, hang that dress where you will see it daily – even if that means on your refrigerator.
What About When the Detox is Over?
When it’s time to eat normal again, what is important to remember is that your body does not need sugar. It needs to maintain a stable blood sugar. If you desire a treat, have a bowl of fresh berries and leave the other processed foods on the shelf and not your thighs.

rom inspiration to money saving ideas and stylist secrets, Lifestyle Expert Andrew Skipper shares his tips for setting a beautiful table this fall. Settle into this cozy season by entertaining friends and family, and you’ll be well on the way to a happy holiday season in the coming weeks.
Inspiration
I was so inspired by the soft colors of this Ralph Lauren tablecloth. I knew from the start that I wanted to keep my table’s color palate in the gold, brown and cream family. By incorporating various shades of these colors, I was able to keep a neutral monotone color scheme from feeling boring. A trip to the pumpkin patch led me to choose cream and yellow gourds for my centerpiece, which also led to the selection of simple tone-ontone yellow striped napkins. The gold chargers are complemented by touches of gold in the rim of my salad plates. Using colored chargers is a great way to add a luxe look to your table settings without spending a lot of money.

Elevate the Everyday
Whenever I’m at tag sales or thrift stores, I’m always on the lookout for silver flatware and serving pieces. I may pick up a set of four forks and mix them with a different pattern of spoons. By purchasing incomplete sets, you will save yourself money and still achieve a high-end look with sterling silver or silver-plated pieces.
Money Matters
I like to use plain white dinner plates because they allow the food to be the star of the show. However, I like to add pattern and color when it comes to bread plates, salad plates and stemware. One of my favorite things about setting a table is mixing things: old with new, stripes with florals, simple with ornate. A great way to acquire additional pieces is to scour thrift shops and estate sales. I took a trip to Goodwill and scored gold champagne flutes, a set of gold chargers and vintage sherbet dishes with brown stems. I even found a beautiful vintage framed picture of daisies for $2.00 that fits perfectly with my tablescape. When thrift shopping, look for pieces that you can use in multiple ways. For instance, the sherbet dishes could be used as champagne coupes for the next cocktail party. The glass vase with gold hand-painted detail could be used as a candle holder for the next dinner.
Even if you’re not up for throwing a full-blown dinner party, you can still entertain friends in your home. Take the stress out of having guests over by stocking your pantry with favorite seasonal snacks such as apples and caramel, cheeses, mixed nuts and olives. Make sure to have a few essential serving pieces like a sturdy tray, cloth napkins and a pretty vase for fresh flowers. On a chilly evening, serve up a tray of hot apple cider alongside a decanter of cinnamon Schnapps. Perhaps take a decanter of brandy and snifters on a tray to enjoy by the fireplace after dinner. It’s the small touches that will make your guests feel extra special and make you the host with the most!

Details
I like to add special touches to my tables by using unique items rather than the mundane. I found two little compotes with lion heads on the sides that are perfect saltcellars for each place setting. Paired with a tiny silver spoon, these quaint details help the table feel special and well thought out.

THE SA SS FACTORY advice from a business coach
Dear Charrise... Charrise McCrorey is a global coach/consultant, writer, speaker and founder of Arms Wide Open Corporation, supporting the empowerment of people and businesses to live and work in their highest purpose. She has offices in Elkhart and Chicago.

Have a co-worker who’s driving you batty? A boss who just won’t listen to reason? Or maybe you’re wondering if this is your time to break out and show the business world what you’re really made of – but you don’t know exactly how to go about it. Sounds like you need some sound business advice! Send your questions to Charrise, our SASSY business coach, and have them answered here. It’s time to get a fresh perspective!
Q:
I am one of two co-owners of a growing global business. My partner and I began the business 2 ½ years ago. We knew each other before we decided to become partners but it seems we weren’t really aware what it would mean to run a business together. To further complicate things, we live 1,000 miles apart, and don’t get together in person more than a few times each year. We are having some communication issues, which makes me have doubts that we can make this partnership work. I don’t want to have doubts, but the truth is that I do. Any suggestions for how to get on better footing?
Charrise Says:
Effective communication is a key for any relationship. It’s funny (not really) how little attention people pay to their 50% of the communication. It does take two… 30 July 2013 | SASSY
Here are some questions to consider: • How often are you two speaking? How often would you be speaking if you were in the same office? You must get committed to frequent communication, even though you are miles apart. Your whole relationship is created through meaningful conversations. Make them a priority. • How organized are your conversations? It’s a great idea to set up specific times to speak, including a brief agenda for the items you’d each like to cover. • Do you speak candidly? The truth is often avoided in the interest of not making someone angry, disappointed or anything other than happy. This won’t work here, and actually doesn’t serve any relationship, ever. Truth telling is especially critical in a business partnership. If each of you are not clearing the air with your thoughts and feelings, you will further erode your already shaky partnership.
• Who takes the lead? One danger of 50/50 partnerships is there isn’t a clear leader. Someone’s gotta lead. • How much of your conflict arises from misinterpreted emails and text messages? I hear so often about people having “text fights.” Seriously? I love the convenience of texting myself, but I know better than to have important conversations with my phone unless it’s up to my ear. Just because we can email or text, doesn’t mean we actually should do that. Inflection is missed. Sarcasm is lost. We are left to interpret cryptic words, which almost always leads to miscommunication. Have your talks via Skype or phone whenever possible. If you want the partnership to work, and you’re willing to integrate these tips into your communication habits, you have a much better chance at succeeding.
3. Don’t quit your day job, at first. Many coaches come to business coaching after job loss, divorce or some other tragic event. Heal your own financial pain first, and build up your bank account. There is nothing worse than trying to teach someone something you haven’t really conquered yourself. If you’re a business coach that’s broke, you won’t have much credibility in the marketplace. Create at least 6 months of savings just for living expenses, to give yourself the financial peace you need, and you’ll be in a better position to enroll clients into your practice. Coaching is an honorable business, making a tremendous difference for those who are interested in getting help for their business and/ or life. It’s more fun than anything I’ve ever done, and worth your careful planning and investigation.
Q:
I’m not happy in my job and am thinking about becoming a business coach. I read your column and have met a few coaches in the area and I’m inspired by the kind of work you do. What does it take to get started?
Charrise Says:
I get this question often. It is a pretty cool gig! According to one of my mentors who works specifically with coaches, 80% of all people who become a coach earn less than $20,000 per year from coaching income. That is a daunting statistic and though not “official,” my experience with other coaches matches pretty closely to that declaration. I’ve coached coaches myself, and what I notice is that due to lack of direction, many new coaches make the same types of mistakes. So, rather than give you a “how to” answer, I’d like to give you a “how not to” answer. 1. Don’t confuse coaching certification with a business plan. Certification can be useful, but that training doesn’t always provide information about how to actually build a coaching practice. Most training organizations focus much of the training on how to be a coach. You need both; otherwise you’ll be a very good coach with no paying clients. 2. Don’t forget to hire a coach for yourself, if you’ve not had one. There is nothing like the experience of being the student in a coaching relationship. Once you’ve experienced the power of that relationship, you’ll be in a much better position to ask clients to sign up with you. If you’re not willing to write a big fat check for that, how is it that you’d be ready to ask someone else to write you one? SASSY | November 2013

Question:
“
What sort of response is appropriate when you have come upon the knowledge that a co-worker who has been at your place of employment for a shorter amount of time makes a higher salary than you?”
ANSWER: Many workplaces consider salary confidential between employee and employer. Under those circumstances, it is never a good idea to talk about your salary with peers. You should excuse yourself from the conversation or even go as far as to say, “I really prefer not to know.”
Despite your best efforts you may hear that someone’s salary tops yours. Here are some steps you should take: Step 1. Stay calm and keep your thoughts to yourself. Rumors run wild in the workplace, and you should do your best not to be part of them. Don’t react to what you hear and certainly don’t repeat it.
34 november 2013 | SASSY
Step 2. Do your homework. Pull together your salary and work history, pay grade data, etc. Reflect on and record your accomplishments in order to determine your value added to the organization. Gather outside data on going rates for trained personnel in your area. Professional organizations, online sites and employment agencies have current market data. Determine what you think a fair salary includes, but don’t stop there. Consider total compensation which includes all employee benefits such as vacation, insurances, retirement benefits, training and development, etc. How do you feel now? Perhaps you have perks that upon reflection make you feel fine about your compensation package. If so, stop here. Step 3. If you still feel dissatisfied, arrange a confidential meeting with your manager to review your salary, compensation and work history. Keep composed, stay pleasant and make the meeting about you and not about someone else. If you don’t get anywhere with your boss, ask him or her to arrange a meeting with Human Resources. Continue to center the discussion on your performance and compensation as part of the firm’s equitable reward system. Use the firm’s existing reporting channels and ethics systems which may include a third-party ombudsman to resolve pay inequities.

10 Things Every Small Business Owner Needs to Know
about Pinterest By: Jillian Koeneman
A great Thanksgiving recipe—pin.
Cute puppy dressed up like a pilgrim—pin.
DIY Christmas ornaments—pin. Inspiring quote from my favorite author—pin.
Have you been bitten by the Pinterest bug yet? If you are anything like me, Pinterest isn’t just another social media site I check–it’s an addiction! Pinterest is like potato chips; you can’t just have one and stop.
Dream home fireplace—pin.
Hmmmm. Homemade baked kale chip recipe?–Pinned!
Winter color palettes for upcoming web design projects—pin.
I am completely hooked on Pinterest are and chances are you are too. Most pinners have dozens of Pinterest boards filled with their latest ambitions, projects, inspirations and addictions. Pinners are window shopping for future purchases.
2.
You are probably quite comfortable with Pinterest on a personal level, but if you are a small business owner (or in charge of marketing a small business), there are some serious benefits your business can reap from utilizing Pinterest on a professional level.
3.
Check out these 10 Things Every Small Business Owner Needs to Know About Pinterest:
1.
Pinterest offers a special type of account for businesses: If you are interested in accessing Pinterest’s analytic features, you need to have a Pinterest business account, which was officially offered starting in the Fall of 2012. If you don’t have a business account yet, go to http://business.pinterest.com/ to sign up. If you already have an account, don’t worry, you can covert your existing account into a featurerich business account. (Note: it is always good practice to have a separate Pinterest account for your business as opposed to trying to integrate it with your personal account. Keep business and personal separate when it comes to social media.) 36 november 2013 | SASSY
Speaking to women: 80% of the people on Pinterest are women so if you have a business that targets woman, Pinterest can be huge traffic driver. According to Wishpond, 20% of all women in the US are active on Pinterest and 50% of all pinners have children.
Pinners spend a lot of time on the site: The average time spent per visit is 14 minutes, with pinners spending on average of 98 minutes per month on the site.
4.
Foster employee ownership: Help your employees become a vested part of your business by offering your top employees the ability to create their own boards for your business. For example, have you ever walked into a book store or music store and saw a shelf of employee recommendations or favorites? You can replicate this via Pinterest with unique boards dedicated to your employees and their favorite aspects of your business.
5.
Engage with your customers: The beauty of social media is that it is a two-way, mutually beneficial relationship. Your customers are the sole reason you are in business. Create some Pinterest boards for your customers, to let them share what’s on their minds, particularly as it relates to your business. I guarantee that you will be delighted with what they come up with and how they inspire other customers.
6.
Teach them something: People visit Pinterest because they want to learn something. Use Pinterest to show your customers unique ways to use your products or services. Or perhaps use Pinterest to solve a problem many of your customers may have with the solution, highlighting your product.
7.
Host a contest: Companies both large and small have found success by hosting a contest on Pinterest. Have your customers pin their own images to your boards as a means of winning a prize. It’s a great way to get content from users and boost your visibility.
8.
Make your presentations shine: Did you know you can add your presentations and PowerPoint presentations to Pinterest? Whether you are preparing a speech, leading a webinar or teaching a class, you can create a Pinterest board for that specific presentation. You can share the board with the attendees as supplemental material after the event is over (and gain new followers!). You can also direct others who didn't have the opportunity to attend to the Pinterest board to grab the content (and gain new followers!).
9.
Make your website Pinnable: In order to fully leverage Pinterest you need to make sure your site is easily pinned. Large, bright, crisp images of your product in application make great pins. Also consider creating infographics and other proprietary images that would encourage users to pin your content directly from your website. To see what is being pinned from your own site use the following URL: http://pinterest.com/source/ YourWebsite.com/
10.
Build the link: One of the simplest, yet most often overlooked ways to boost your following on Pinterest is to add the icon and link from your website. Also be sure to connect your other social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to Pinterest for maximum impact. ď ¨

Tiedemann Wines Making Wine an Everyday Adventure
Elizabeth Carris had her first drink of wine when she was only three years old. But don’t worry—her first sip wasn’t a lapse in parenting judgment, but a foreshadowing into her future as part of the dynamic father-daughter team that is Tiedemann Wines.
Making wine an adventure
When Elizabeth and her father, Carl Tiedemann, decided to go into business together three years ago, they knew that they were not interested in just practicing the business of wine distribution; they wanted to be in the business of making memories. As a wholesale distributor, Elizabeth and her father hand-select the wines that they offer to their clients, including offering three of their own labels. The Tiedemann Wines company prides itself on offering wines that are “interesting, adventurous and memorable.”
Local distribution, vintage production And that adventurous side of Tiedemann wine begins where all good wines get their start, of course—in Napa Valley, California. Elizabeth explains that all of the Tiedemann wines are made in Napa, including their own three signature labels. The company also distributes from other Napa vineyards for the line’s Spanish wines, Chicago for some German and Argentinian wines and even a few labels from
38 november 2013 | SASSY
Ohio. “We have over 50 types of wine,” says Elizabeth proudly. “And because we specialize in boutique wines as a high-end market, we are able to have access to some exclusive Napa Valley wines that just aren’t distributed to anybody else.” From Napa Valley to Chicago, the Tiedemann wines make their way up to Elkhart in companies and restaurants like McCarthy’s, Fat Cam’s on Garber Lake on Michigan, Belmont Beverage & Chalet Party Shop, City-Wide Liquor Stores, Uptown Kitchen and the Mark and Christianity Creek Country Club.
Signature label
Of all the work that Tiedemann does, it’s obvious that Elizabeth is especially proud of the three signature Tiedemann wines, one white and two reds, that were hand-selected and blended with Elizabeth’s father and business partner Carl, founder of Tiedemann Wines. Every season, usually in the spring and fall, Elizabeth’s dad makes the trip down to Napa Valley to sit with the winemakers and get involved on the entire process from start to finish. “He has input on the whole process,” explains Elizabeth. The winemaker and Carl work as a team to mix and come up with the taste and blending process, but in the end, “Carl has the final say on it all,” says Elizabeth. And you know it’s good wine by the way Elizabeth lights up just talking about her wine. “I love our Sauvignon Blanc,” gushes Elizabeth. “It’s my favorite; it has a melon flavor and it’s crisp and clean; you can taste it all the way down.”
“I’m persistent,” says Elizabeth simply. She’s honest about the time and effort that she has put in to reach her level of success. “When I started, I went to Barnes & Nobles and bought up all the books I could about wine,” she remembers. And now, Elizabeth is dedicated to learning all she can about wine and staying abreast on the business. “I subscribe to wine blogs, wine magazines, I meet with wine makers and talk to people—I learn a lot that way,” she says. “I just pay attention.” Elizabeth believes that for women in business, the most important key to success is passion. “If you’re passionate about it, it will come. The money will come. If it’s worth your time and energy, it’s worth putting it out there,” she says.
“Both of our reds are 90-pointed reds, which means they have been rated by a variety of many wine critics,” she goes on. “They appeal to so many people and go well with so many foods.”
And one final word of advice from a woman who’s had to learn a lot over the past three years? “Don’t be afraid to ask for help!” advises Elizabeth. “Ask questions if you work with other people who do the same thing that you do; it doesn’t hurt.”
No snobbery here
Although Tiedemann Wines is proud of its wine and deals exclusively in the higher-end markets of wine, don’t expect any snobby airs put on here. No decanting or proper chilling or airing out necessary. “We like our wines to be able to be enjoyed right away,” states Elizabeth firmly. “We want it be enjoyed right out of the bottle and I think that we have achieved that goal.” And the secret to reaching that goal? It’s simple, Elizabeth explains:
“
Special events
Tiedemann Wines offers several different events to share and cultivate their knowledge and passion for great wine. “We do public wine tastings at Chalet or City Wide with our wine or ones that we specifically carry,” offers Elizabeth as one example. With a diverse collection of wines at their disposal, Tiedemann Wines also hosts themed dinners that highlight the fun varieties they offer, like French Wine Dinners or Argentina Nights. The company has also been involved in charity events, such as the Botanical Gardens and Hello, Gorgeous! Elizabeth explains that they have a special passion for educating others on wine appreciation. “We’ve done classes with the servers and staff at the restaurants that serve our wine,” she says. “A basic Wine 101 course.” And not only does Tiedemann ensure that their clients are educated on all that their wine can offer, but Elizabeth is excited to offer public group classes as well.
Our business is our passion: we make it and we love it, so it’s our niche. We know everything about our wines. We know the insides and outsides of every bottle of wine in our warehouse; we wouldn’t sell anything that we wouldn’t carry in our own homes.”
Tiedemann wine also shares its love of wine with some educational tools on its website, including a wine glossary, meal-wine pairing suggestions and a helpful guide for wine pronunciation. Show off some of your new knowledge and host a dinner party this fall—you’ll be the talk of the town!
After a recent move and complete renovation of the company from downtown Elkhart, Tiedemann Wines has found a new home on E. Lexington. “We renovated the entire area, which includes a beautiful tasting room—we have the tasting room on-site, connected to the temperature-controlled white and red warehouses” Elizabeth says. But underneath the best technology, renovations and an unyielding drive to offer the best product, the philosophy of Tiedemann Wines is relatively simple.
“
We want wine to be a fun and educational process!” says Elizabeth. “We want to have fun, we want people to try something new. Wine brings camaraderie; it brings people, family, friends and food together. Wine is just a good time.
Women in wine
Starting a business from the ground-up in a new field “has had its challenges and hurdles,” admits Elizabeth. But with her bright lipstick and big smile, I think it’s safe to say that Elizabeth meets the criteria for all that makes a Sassy businesswoman.
”
Elizabeth has been in business with her father, by her count, “on and off since I was 12” she says with a slight laugh. Earning her keep in real estate in her earlier years, it wasn’t until December 2010 that she and her dad decided to make their passion of wine into a business. (Hey, happy almost bizanniversary, Elizabeth!)
But what it all boils down to is that there is a very simple wisdom to the Tiedemann belief about wine. “Wine doesn’t have to be snobby!” Elizabeth comments. “Just take that first sip!” To inquire about purchasing Tiedemann Wine, call Elizabeth at 574-296-1326. Prices range from $20-$40 retail price. You can also learn more at

Regina Emberton
I have a great idea for a business, but I can’t afford to quit my full-time job just yet. What are some ways I can get started pursuing my passion on the side?
”
President & CEO, Michiana Partnership Regina is the President & CEO of Michiana Partnership, a new regional economic development organization focused on marketing, promotion, and business attraction for Michiana. Ultimately.
Answer: It can be a great option to start your own business while you are still employed in a full-time position. If you are going to perform a day job and a part-time business, you should be sure you have your family’s support of your plan to work on the evenings and weekends and be prepared to forego non-essential activities. You should also understand your employment contract, as some organizations have specific policies addressing side businesses. Either way, be as open with your employer as possible, letting them know that your job with them comes first and that you will be developing your business model on your own time with your own equipment. Seek out resources, such as the North

What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast by Laura Vanderkam Reviewed by Meagan Church

In her book, “What the Most “The biggest question is what you want to do in Successful People do Before Breakfast,” Laura makes the morning. Long term, you’re just not going to get the argument that mornings “can be productive times. out of bed for something you don’t want to do. So Joyous times. Getting up a few minutes before your kids can help you start the day in a positive, rather than reactive, frame of mind. Kids can also learn to do many things on their own that parents often do for them, like making lunches or checking that their bags are packed." To be successful at this, Laura recommends starting slowly, especially for self-proclaimed night owls. “You’re not going to magically go to bed at 10:30 and wake up at 5:30 all at once. Move your bedtime and wake-up time just by a few minutes, until the new time feels normal. Then move it a bit more.” Perhaps the best motivator for reframing what your morning looks like is a sweet reward. “You can turn a desire into a ritual by making success as easy as possible, rewarding yourself and coming up with a way to hold yourself accountable,” Laura said. “So, for instance, if you want to use your mornings to write fiction, you can keep your laptop close to your bed, so you see it when you wake up. You can program your coffee maker to have a fresh pot brewed at the time you want to get up, so that helps pull you out of bed. If you write the number of words you want to write, you can give yourself a reward—maybe a breakfast you really love or 10 minutes surfing the Web or whatever you want. As for holding yourself accountable, you might check in with a writing buddy every day to report if you kept your habit or not. All of these things would increase the chances of success.” With that success comes a changed perspective for the rest of the day. “A victory scored early on helps us feel that the world is ours,” Laura said. “We can do whatever we set out to do. Isn’t that a nice feeling to have in life?”

Morris Inn A Notre Dame Tradition
By: Chaunie Brusie
Built on the same pillars of faith, community and excellence, stands the foundation of the new and improved Morris Inn on the campus of Notre Dame University.
A Connection to History
The Morris Inn at Notre Dame is a living piece of history on the campus. Built in 1950, the original Morris Inn stood proud as the first structure of the Notre Dame post-war building program, an initiative designed to help bolster spirits and rebuild life after the war. When the inn made its debut on April 21, 1952, it boasted 92 guest rooms, 85 twin rooms and seven double rooms. The construction of the Inn was made possible by the generous donation of 1906 Notre Dame alumnus, Ernest M. Morris and his wife, Ella L. Morris. Ernest Morris grew up as a Presbyterian orphan and appealed for assistance for a $100 loan to the president of Notre Dame in 1905. The loan—and Ernest’s admission to the prestigious University—was granted. Morris went on to graduate, starting a career in law and finance and eventually founding what became the Associates Investment Corp of America. That’s a man who knew how to stretch a dollar! The Inn was used for many of the school’s charity and community events throughout history; notable guests included John Kennedy Jr. and his wife Caroline for an event honoring the Special Olympics. 44 november 2013 | SASSY
History Repeats Itself
According to Morris Inn employee Heather Goralski, the Morris Inn renovation was deemed necessary as a means to better service its guests, “while still preserving the spirit and tradition of the original hotel.” In a coincidental turn of events, the Morris Inn’s facelift was actually made possible by Ernestine Raclin, the daughter of the original hotel benefactors. Raclin and her family teamed up with the Carmichael Foundation to provide an impressive $15 million gift for the sole purpose of restoring the Morris Inn to its former glory—and then some. The Inn was closed for business on October 21, 2012 for the first time in 60 years to begin construction.
The Renovation
Renovating the Morris Inn was no easy project. It took years of planning, 39 weeks of construction with round-the-clock shifts from workers and a whopping $32 million dollars to improve and expand the Inn, along with some 321,436 different room supplies, like wine coasters and ice buckets. The entire renovation transformed the inn into what University architect and vice president Doug Marsh called, “a remarkable new facility that will well serve Notre Dame and its legions of visitors for generations to come.”
The Morris Inn Today
Dubbed the “living room” of the Notre Campus, today the Morris Inn features valet parking, a tavern, gift shop, a doubled staff of employees ready to serve, 150 guest rooms, 18 suites, three private dining rooms, fireside terrace seating, a 5,000 square foot ballroom, a 24/7 business center, fitness center, an outdoor terrace and many other amenities to ensure the comfort of its guests.

Morris Inn
A Notre Dame Tradition continued...
The Goal of the Morris Inn?
“
To preserve the spirit of the original hotel, while managing every detail to help create lifelong memories for every single person who walks through our doors,” said Morris Inn & Notre Dame Conference Director/General Manager Joseph Kurth.
Special Events
Football season might be an excellent chance for visitors to check out the new and improved Morris Inn. The outdoor Fireside Terrace, which features a natural gas fire pit, heat lamps and pashmina shawls to keep you warm and cozy, the tavern Rohr’s, serving up quality bar food and beer and the posh restaurant Sorin’s are all open to the public during football season weekends. “We welcome all visitors to experience the newly re-imagined Morris Inn!” says Goralski.
46 november 2013 | SASSY
Going Green
An important part of the restoration and renovation efforts at the Morris Inn included widespread efforts for sustainability and responsible conservation. Goralski explains that along with features like a green work for stormwater management and improved air quality, LED lights throughout the building, water filtration systems on every floor for guests to refill their own bottles and single steam recycling, the Inn is currently seeking LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The Inn is also able to utilize Notre Dame’s own recycling plant, making it possible for the Inn to recycle many items that other facilities cannot, like Styrofoam.
Welcoming New Guests
The Morris Inn isn’t just for exclusive guests anymore. Goralski states that the new and improved Morris Inn welcomes a wide range of guests into its doors; anyone from faculty members, guest speakers, conference attendees, parents, alumni and fans are welcome to join the University in celebrating its new additions. “The Morris Inn is the perfect fit for anyone who is visiting the University of Notre Dame or for anyone who wants to experience staying right on the Notre Dame Campus,” says Goralski. Standard overnight rates for the Morris Inn begin at $169 per night. To book a stay or learn more about the new Morris Inn, visit morrisinn.nd.edu.

SASSY Magazine promotes Michiana’s cultural offerings, personalities, attractions and local businesses, with a special emphasis on non-profit organizations’ events and activities. We expect this section of SASSY to grow significantly, and we’d like your help to get it rolling! Please send us some of your favorite photos from your organization’s or charity’s best events and fundraisers. They just may make the next issue of SASSY Magazine! We prefer snapshots of people that are full of life and enjoying the moment, so please send them our way: Chaunie@MichianaFamilyMagazine.com.
Dance Marathon “For The Kids 5K” Race Saint Mary’s College’s students hosted the sixth annual Dance Marathon “For The Kids 5K” (FT5K) race in support of Riley Hospital for Children on Thursday, Oct. 3. Riley Hospital, located in Indianapolis, treats sick children from all over the state, including the South Bend area. Since Saint Mary’s students began the Dance Marathon in 2006, they have raised more than $610,000 for the hospital. While the actual Dance Marathon is months away (April 5, 2014), students at the women's college are glad to have fundraising off to a running start with the 5K.
Dance Marathon and the "For the Kids" 5K, aka FT5K, are organized by students like Kristen Millar, junior; Ellen Smith, senior; Erin Nanovic, senior; Allison Lukomski, sophomore; and Sara Eiker, sophomore.
