Fashionably SASSY TOP TRENDS for 2015: Retro Glasses are a must-have for 2015 - the cat eye look and lots of color! Glasses are considered accessories - similar to shoes & handbags - in 2015, making it very difficult to only want one pair!
What has been the most exciting part of your career? Becoming a national speaker & author for industry meetings, journals and books.
What designers influence you the most and why? Coach - Started as a family-owned company and has continued evolving the style and design of the product while always upholding the quality.
Best piece of fashion/jewelry/makeup advice: Dare to be unique.
What is one item that you will be seen wearing this winter? My fabulous Versace sunglasses! Most people don't realize that the winter season is just as important (if not more) to protect your eyes from harmful rays and reflections from the snow.
As a business owner, what makes you feel SASSY? I feel SASSY when I can motivate and empower others to be their very best self!

What makes Flourish Boutique unique?
Flourish is a unique shopping destination because we provide fashion that looks and feels expensive but is surprisingly affordable. When you combine that with our superior customer service, stunning store space and awesome sales and deals, you get a truly remarkable boutique!
How did Flourish Boutique get started?
Flourish was opened in 2008 by Vanessa Cooreman Smith. We started off in an 800 square foot space in an untraditional retail location. Since then we have moved twice, and now have over 3600 square feet and sell online all over the world.
What has been the most exciting part of your career?
The most exciting part of my career is seeing Flourish grow substantially. The first time I saw a customer out and about in town wearing Flourish, I cried from happiness. Now, no matter where I go, I almost always see people wearing our clothes and accessories. It is truly a blessing to have not only survived the recession but thrived. We were voted the #1 Women's Clothing Boutique in this year's South Bend Tribune's Readers' Choice Awards, and, that too, was a sign of our growth and popularity. What a phenomenal blessing! What designers influence you the most and why? My favorite designers are Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch. I love not only the mix of their classic and yet trendy fashions but also the incredible branding these particular designers embody. Though Flourish is an affordable brand, I look to those designers for inspiration for branding and marketing, as well as, how to make collections BOTH trendy and classy. What is one item that you will be seen wearing this winter? I am loving my short boots this season! While tall boots are still in, short boots are all the rage and I like this refreshing twist on a fall/winter classic! Who's your favorite fashion icon and why? My favorite fashion icon is Coco Chanel. I love the black and white classic colors, her quilted bags, her perfume and the pearls in her designs. I also love that she is known for helping make pants stylish for women, and yet her designs and the Chanel brand to this day is decidedly feminine at the same time!
Looking Into
The Future: What special events does Flourish Boutique do throughout the year? In addition to the Glitz and Sass Fashion Show, we enjoy putting on at least one big fashion show per year. We also have a Holiday Open House planned for this Christmas. And twice a year we host our famous Overstock Sales, where we clearance a ton of items out to move to a new season.
Notes
Saw the perfect fashion must-have?
Jot down what you liked here and find it at the boutique later!
How does Flourish Boutique give back to the community? Flourish loves to give back to the community. Sometimes we have special sales where a portion of the proceeds are given back to an organization. Also some of the Flourish girls come together and serve at the homeless shelter. We did a food drive earlier this fall too!
Best piece of fashion/jewelry/makeup advice: My number one fashion tip is, Wear What You Love! Do not stress about whether or not a color is right for your skin type, or if a top was purchased last season etc. There's always a way to mix a color or an item up to make it flattering and fashion forward. Embrace the fashion you love and have fun figuring out how to style it! Fashion should be fun and make a statement about YOU! As a business owner, what makes you feel SASSY? I feel most SASSY when I am working my hardest. I love taking Flourish to the next level by making our store space bigger, redesigning the website and hiring a full time professional photographer. These steps forward in making Flourish better and better make me feel impassioned and sassy! SASSY | November 2014

What makes Judee’s Boutique unique?
Most of our customers travel at least 40 minutes to shop at Judee's, so we focus on providing a superior customer experience. A Victorian style home built in 1880, filled with 4,000 square feet of merchandise, your certified image consultants will greet you at the door and provide the level of assistance you prefer. We have a private elegant dressing room, complimentary champagne and/ or lunch. Style shows on request. Customers will find styles from formal to casual, in all sizes and all price points. We also have styles that are custom made. Private in-home shopping, on request.
How did Judee’s Boutique get started?
As a busy Corporate Executive, I longed for the perfect shopping experience. It would be situated in a private dressing room with pre-selected clothing, all in my sizes. A glass of wine, snacks, sales associates to help with accessories and a seamstress available to make sure each of my selections were the perfect fit. A phone call from Father Angotti in 2013 informed me that my favorite boutique, Judee's, was for sale. Judee Gartland had established Judee's as the go-to place to find formal-wear. My goal was to develop the perfect "customer experience" and add some social media.

Steam couture Find Your Edge What makes Steam Couture unique?
Our boutique brings the big city feel close to home. With our Industrial Chic decor and edgy on-trend clothing brands, you'll leave feeling like you've been to Chicago and back in one afternoon.
How did Steam Couture get started?
Owners: Rees & Kelly Regier • 1241 E. University Dr., Granger, IN 46530 www.facebook.com/stmctr • madamekelly@steamcouture.net 574-703-7150 • Hours: Tues - Sat 11am - 7pm
I have always had a passion for making people feel better about themselves. That passion has manifested itself in different ways throughout the years of foster care involvement, leading church youth groups, teaching facial classes and makeup application, gym ownership, coaching recreational and competitive gymnastics and now clothing. My husband and I love antiquing, so when we decided to take a leap of faith and open our store, the blend of decorating with rusty metal and antiques and blending fashion from the past with that of the present was natural. We opened May 15th of this year and have loved every second of it!
Fashionably SASSY TOP TRENDS for 2015: Leather boots are not going away anytime soon. It's worth the investment to get quality leather ones because they are more comfortable and breathe better. Pair them with boot socks or cuffs and shorts/skirts, or with leggings or skinny jeans, really just about anything! For men, designer jeans are still gaining momentum. If you haven't done it yet it's time to get out of those old Levi's and into something with a little more personality.
What is one item that you will be seen wearing this winter? I'm almost always in a pair of leather Bedstu boots. They're both comfortable and stylish. Who's your favorite fashion icon and why? While I don't condone her behavior, I still find Norma Jeane Mortenson (Marilyn Monroe) one of the most exciting fashionistas in history! She lived a hard life as a child. One that I can relate to because of my work with foster children. Regardless, she found beauty within herself and lived her adult life with passion and gusto, setting fashion trends that women still imitate today. What makes a SASSY woman fantastic? She is confident enough in who she is that she is looking past herself to how she can help others.

How does Steam Couture give back to the community? We're new so we haven't had much time to find favorites yet but we're participating in B100's Christmas Wish Program and look forward to finding many other ways to give back in the future.
Where will Steam Couture be in 10 years? I know without a doubt that in 10 years we will have deepened our relationships with those in the community and will have become a reliable, go-to shop where both men and women can come knowing they'll leave looking and feeling better in quality brands that will last.

Three Trends to Start Wearing
Whether you are adding some pieces into your fall wardrobe or just need a little fashion boost to your current style, these three noteworthy trends are wearable at any age, any budget and for any lifestyle. By: Kathy Friend
Lumberjack Plaid
What it is: This is a strong big plaid, think black and
red flannel shirts. This plaid is being seen as a detail on jackets, in skirts, socks, leggings, skirts…basically everywhere. Beware: Because this is such a big bold print, be
careful if you have soft coloring (light brown, blonde hair, hazel, blue or light brown eyes). The contrast in this plaid can be overwhelming on you. Likewise, if you are petite, this print might be a bit too much on you. How to wear it: This trend has a distinct
masculine feel. Be sure to pair this strong print with something softer and feminine. It also has a youthful casual vibe. To wear this plaid in a sophisticated way, fabric choices will be very important. Leave the flannel at home. Opt for silk or wool for the office.

Skater Skirts
What it is: A circle skirt that hits above the knee. We are also seeing longer versions of this trend. This look is voluminous. Beware: If your body shape includes having some “junk in your trunk,” you might want to pass on this trend. This skirt adds volume to the hipbooty area. How to wear it: Because this style is full, the shirt you pair with it should be fitted. The short nature of this skirt lends itself to a leg-baring look. For the office, a dark opaque tight with a like-colored oxford or boot would be perfect.
Royal Blue
What it is: This blue is a bold, bright blue. If you have been to the mall recently, you have probably noticed the abundance of this color in the stores. Beware: Everyone can wear this color well. How much of it, and what you
compliment with it is key. Head to toe royal blue is too much. Pairing with blue jeans is too much. The best combination is with a neutral (like camel, grey or black) or with a pop color (using the blue as the neutral). Some color combinations to try are: Royal Blue and Radiant Orchid, Royal Blue and Sangria or Royal Blue and Aurora Red.
How to wear it: Look for a signature piece in this great hue this season. Maybe a winter jacket or something in leather. Be sure to seek out a good blue shoe. Because this is such a hot color this season we will be seeing a lot of shoes done in blue (which isn’t typical). Try a bootie! Seek out prints that have hints of this color. This will make it simple to begin to use Royal Blue as your new neutral.

Six
Quick Ways
to Jumpstart Your Day By: Alexa Tupper
BEEP BEEP BEEP. We all know the feeling when the alarm clock goes off. It’s a mix of annoyance and dread as one sleepy hand fumbles for the snooze button. But, what if mornings didn’t involve grumpy moods and oodles of coffee? Though it may sound impossible, happy mornings can be your reality and the secret is to skip hitting the snooze button. Forget heading back to dreamland for another 10 minutes and consider the benefits of waking up and starting your day earlier. Instead of going from a 7 a.m. alarm to a 5 a.m. alarm, take it slowly. Gradually increase how much earlier you wake up by five or 10 minutes each week. Soon enough you will have carved out a nice chunk of time in the mornings for doing whatever you’d like. Looking for some inspiration? Here’s what we like to do with our newfound morning time:
Get in a quick workout. Taking the dog for a walk is an easy way to get your blood flowing and your brain firing. Mental clarity is improved with daily workouts because more oxygen flows to your brain, leaving you feeling sharper and ready to accomplish any task. Your metabolism also reaps the rewards of working out early and you’ll keep burning calories throughout the day. Setting a goal to workout daily can seem daunting at first, but there’s less time to dread running those laps if you do it right when you wake up. 26
November 2014 | SASSY
Make a meal out of breakfast. It’s easy to fall into the trap of grabbing a Pop-Tart or doughnut as you head out the door to work. Sugary breakfast foods may seem like they wake you up, but the sugar rush is only temporary and a crash is bound to follow. Post-crash, you’ll be tired and hungry for more junk food. To prevent this drop in blood sugar, take your extra few minutes in the morning to make an actual meal for breakfast. Eggs are a tasty source of protein that will hold you over until your lunch hour. Garnish them with your favorite toppings and go with a glass of juice or water to drink. Not a fan of eggs? Instead choose a filling food like oatmeal and fruit. Indulge in leisure time. How often do you find yourself wishing you had more ‘me’ time? After work, it seems like there’s always something to do, and it seems like it’s not often what you had in mind as a nice relaxing way to wind down after working. Take the time in the morning that you’d normally doze off to read the next chapter in the book you can’t put down. Or listen to the new catchy song you can’t get out of your head. Your boss probably wouldn’t find your first-pumping dance moves amusing in the office, so carve out some time in the morning to jam at home, free of judgment. Plan out the day. Before the day’s activities sneak up on you, map out a schedule of your tasks. You’ll feel much more organized and in charge if you have a to-do list ready to go. If lists intimidate you, motivate yourself by
purchasing a cute planner that distracts from your busy schedule. Having a fun pattern will make it less of a pain to carry around and will ensure that you never lose track of your day again! Bonus points if you highlight an item when you check it off your list.
Read something. Anything. Even if it’s the back of the cereal box, make it a priority to engage your brain and get into work mode. Waking up late and having to hurry around doesn’t allow for your mind to ease into work mode. Reading will draw in your attention and sharpen your focus so that you’re ready to go and able to be at the top of your game at work.
“Happy mornings can be your reality and the secret is to skip hitting the snooze button.” Catch up on current events. It’s a big world and sad, happy and hopeful events are happening right as you read this. To keep track of all of them, bring your morning paper to the table and peruse while you eat, or take your tablet with you to the gym so you can catch up on all the events happening locally, nationally and worldwide while on the elliptical. You’ll not only be more educated on timely topics of significance, but you’ll also be able to participate in conversations around the water cooler involving more important topics than Kanye’s latest comment.

Quick, Healthy and Tasty
Meals By: Titilayo Akhigbe
In the middle of the work day, stopping to take a lunch break may just not be possible. How is a busy woman to stay healthy, focused, and on top of her game? Make yourself some easy peasy, yet tasty, foods that can easily be consumed on the go! Think high nutrients and quick consumption. So, preferably something that does not need to be reheated, since salad leaves might wilt, and can stay fresh for hours on end, as sandwiches could get soggy. One superb food to add to any diet is Quinoa, which is high in both proteins and fibers. It is delicious, fast to cook and very versatile. The key to quinoa consumption is cooking it right. Once that perfectly fluffy, grainy texture is achieved, it can be paired with anything from curries to vegetables to meat to make a scrumptious meals. Before cooking quinoa, rinse thoroughly in order to get rid of its outer coating, which can make your finished product taste extremely bitter. It takes about 20 minutes to cook one cup of quinoa to perfection, and roughly two cups of water to one cup of quinoa. For great tasting quinoa, chicken broth can be substituted for water. This combination yields about three cups of cooked quinoa and can be refrigerated for up to seven days.
Now that the base is ready, here are a few ways to enjoy your superfood: Quinoa and Vegetables
Quinoa and Chicken Salad
Ingredients: • 2 Cups Cooked Quinoa • 1/2 Cup Each of Broccoli Florets, Cauliflower, Diced Red Peppers, Diced Yellow Peppers, Mushrooms and Spinach • Season with Garlic, Seasoning Salt and Pepper • 2 Teaspoons Olive Oil
Ingredients: • 2 Cups Cooked Quinoa • 1/4 Cup Each of Onion, Carrot, Celery and Diced Green Pepper • 1 Cup Cooked Chicken (Shredded) • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil • 1 Tablespoon Parsley Flakes, Garlic, Seasoning Salt and Pepper
Directions: Sauté vegetables in oil, add seasoning, stir in cooked quinoa and serve. This dish can be eaten warm or cold.

Directions: Heat oil and stir in vegetables, stirring occasionally till they are done. Stir in chicken and quinoa and let cook for about a minute, stirring to prevent the quinoa from sticking to the pan. Add parsley, and the rest of the seasonings, stir and cook for another minute. Serve warm or cold.
Quinoa and Shrimp Ingredients: • 2 Cups Cooked Quinoa • 1 Clove of Garlic (Crushed) • 1/2 Each of an Onion (Diced) and Red Pepper (Diced) • ½ Cup of Mushrooms (Sliced) • 2 Tablespoons Raisins • 1 Fresh Ginger Root (Crushed) • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil • ½ Pound Uncooked Medium Shrimp (Deveined) • 1 ½ Teaspoons Lemon Juice • 4 Spears Fresh Asparagus (Cut Into One Inch Pieces) • Salt and Pepper to Taste Directions: Stir lemon juice into quinoa. Heat oil and stir in red pepper, onion and garlic. Cook for about five minutes, then add the asparagus, mushrooms, raisins and ginger. Leave it to cook until the asparagus is tender, then stir in the shrimp. Cook until shrimp is pink, then stir in the lemon quinoa. Season with salt and pepper, serve warm or cold.

The
Helpful Handbook
to Holiday Entertaining at Home
By: Andrew Skipper
The holiday season is all about spending time with family and friends, celebrating the year and giving thanks for life’s blessings. And while that may sound effortless, the truth is that the holidays can bring a lot of stress, especially when you’re the hostess! From spur of the moment guests who drop by to full on formal dinner parties, try these helpful hints to make holiday entertaining less about putting pressure on yourself and more about easing into the most wonderful time of the year:
Step Right In Be Prepared
The time to stock up on entertaining essentials is before you actually have guests coming! Forget the themed serving pieces and instead opt for classic silver trays, crisp linen napkins and white china that you can use any time of year. You can always add in extra elements as your budget allows but by having a base of essentials, you won’t have to run to the store last minute for a platter to serve appetizers on. For Thanksgiving, add orange salad plates and for Christmas use sparkly placemats. Instead of having a set of Thanksgiving dishes and Christmas dishes (that you have to store and only use once a year), you can invest in beautiful centerpieces that reflect the season. This is a great way to free up space in your cabinets and free up money in your wallet!
Who Are You? Cheers!
While we’re talking drinks, I recommend always having a few bottles of champagne, Prosecco or sparkling juice on hand. The holidays are a festive time of year when people bring excitement with them to parities. Nothing says, “This time is special” like a bottle of bubbly. If you’re ever going to make a toast, this is this time of year to do it!
When having people into your home, practicality matters. With snow, slush and mud, do you want guests to remove their shoes? If so, place a small sign by the door politely asking guests to do so. Also think about where they will put their shoes. Do you have a front closet? Why not install shoe shelves lined with rubber mats to accommodate dripping shoes? At the very least, it is imperative to have a heavy duty rug near the entrance of your home so that people can come in out of the cold and have a place to stash their boots. There’s nothing worse than standing in an open doorway and not knowing if you can come in or not. How awkward!
What kind of hostess are you? Do you prefer to sit out a lovely drinks tray, inviting guests to help themselves or do you like to control the portions? Either way, make sure you have what you need on hand before the party starts. To set up a home bar, you’ll want to have a tray placed in a convenient location with good traffic flow. Beverages, a large ice bucket and tongs, cocktail napkins, a martini shaker and strainer, a corkscrew and bottle opener and, of course, a couple of heavy duty kitchen towels in case someone spills are all necessities. If you’re premixing the drinks, a punch bowl or large glass pitchers are needed.
Drop By
For those last minute guests who just happen to be in the neighborhood (freak out time!), be sure to do what I call “Clever Cleaning." First off, use a laundry basket to do a quick swoop through the public rooms of your house and throw anything that doesn’t belong in it (think clutter like mail, sweaters, that random bottle of nail polish on the coffee table, toys, etc.). Stash that basket full of misfit items in the bedroom for now. Once the guests are gone, you can go through it and return everything to its proper home. Then go through and fluff the pillows on the sofa, fold the throws and load the dishwasher. Lastly, take some lemon pledge and just spray & wipe down the interior doors at eye (or rather nose) level. It will leave that “freshly cleaned” scent, giving the illusion that you’ve been slaving away all day (or that the housekeeper just left).
Nibbles
It’s always a good idea to keep little snacks like crackers, olives, cheese and classic potato chips around so that you have something to offer guests. I once went to a very imposing, formal mansion where the host offered me a glass of champagne and had potato chips in a silver bowl sitting on the coffee table. It was an elegant and comfortable way to enjoy a no-fuss, no-prep snack and instantly made me like the hostess even better.

Count The Courses
When it comes to formal dinner parties, don’t overdo it, especially if you’re doing all the cooking. Limit the number of courses to five or six, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for disaster. Something inevitably won’t go as planned or a dish won’t be served hot and that’s only going to stress you out. Keep the menu under control and know your limits.
Centerpieces
If you’re not good at flower arranging, don’t worry! Ask a florist to help create the perfect centerpiece. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Group one type and color of flower (like red roses) in a tight arrangement is a fool proof way to wow guests. Sprinkle the table with plenty of candles and you’ve just set the stage for a memorable evening. SASSY | November 2014

Top 5 Ways
to Achieve
Work-Life Balance By: Marianne C. Weesner
I
n a world full of technology that connects us with our jobs, it may seem impossible to achieve this elusive work-life balance. There are things you can do to help achieve this work-life balance: Prioritize 1. A good way to prioritize is to make a list of things that have to be done in the order of importance. This allows you to have a clear plan of action. Prioritizing helps eliminate any surprises and focuses on getting things done in a systemized order based on the importance of the task.
Communicate 2. Communicate with your employer and fellow coworkers. A simple, but effective way you can do this by filling out your calendar with everything from you work to your personal life appointments, so your availability is clear. Sometimes something out of your control will come up, but part of achieving a work-life balance is about being flexible.
Make Time for Meditation 3. Meditation helps us regroup and clear the clutter from our minds. This allows us to focus on executing tasks more efficiently, because our minds will be refreshed and ready to concentrate on the tasks at hand.
Make Time for Friends and Family 4. When you are setting up your calendar, try to include dates for a friend or family member you have been meaning to see. A fun time out with friends and family can help you rejuvenate.
Rest 5. Rest is essential. Fit into your schedule time where you can decompress. Get a manicure or pedicure, try a new yoga or fitness class or take a nap. During your rest period, it is important to disconnect yourself from technology.
32
With these tips, it may be possible to achieve somewhat of a worklife balance. The important thing is having a plan of action to try to create this balance. Challenge yourself to follow these five tips for 21 days and see if it makes a difference in your life. ď § November 2014 | SASSY

Work Schedules
O
By: Cyndy Searfoss
n Monday and Wednesday, Carla begins her workday at 7 A.M. She leaves the office at 3:30 on those days so she can take her son to music lessons. Peter works late three days a week during the summer so he can take time off for his son’s Little League games. Justin is only in the office on Mondays; he telecommutes to his sales job the rest of the week. Flexible work arrangements are a growing trend, offering benefits on both sides of the employer/employee equation. More employers are allowing their staff this option, which helps them retain and recruit good employees by boosting morale and reducing burnout. Flexible work schedules give employees the ability to meet family and personal obligations that can’t be scheduled after the normal workday. They’re also a tremendous boon for people who are more productive early in the morning or late in the day.
But striking a good life/work balance and keeping both sides happy takes more than just flexible hours at work. A clear-cut understanding of expectations on the part of both employer and employee is vital to successful flexible schedules. Some companies or organizations have formal policies regarding flexible work schedules. They may offer compressed work schedules, condensing 40 hours of work into three to four days. Or, the schedule may allow hours that are outside the typical 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. workday, say 7 A.M. to 4 P.M. Others allow employees to work different hours each day or allow longer lunch breaks to accommodate running errands, appointments, etc. What they all require, however, is that the employee’s work will be done on time, and to an expected level of quality, regardless of the schedule.
flexible, my co-workers who work more traditional hours don’t realize how many hours I put in. They seem to think I work just the hours they see me here when the reality is that I’m often working weekends and until 9 or 10 at night to finish up projects. They don’t seem to look at the fact that my work is always done on time.” Flexible schedules can also make routine communication more difficult. Some employers ask that employees remain available via phone, text or email when they’re out of the office so co-workers can be in touch about projects, schedules and decisions that need to be made.
“Flexible work schedules give employees the ability to meet family and personal obligations that can’t be scheduled after the normal workday.” If your employer already has a flexible schedule policy, putting together an arrangement with your supervisor and HR department is likely all that is required. This may include a signed agreement that spells out your schedule and any requirements you will need to fulfill to keep your flexible work schedule in place. Other organizations leave the decision to departments or supervisors to be implemented at their discretion.
Employers have also been known to pull the plug on flexible working arrangements with little notice. In 2013, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer made headlines when she issued a corporatewide ban on working from home, which impacted the lives of thousands of employees who telecommuted regularly. What if your employer refuses to allow a flexible work schedule? The reality is that flexible schedules in some organizations don’t work well. For example, most manufacturing and production businesses need to be fully staffed during business hours in order to operate. Currently, there are no rules or laws making flexible schedules mandatory. In fact, the Labor Relations Board leaves any decisions about scheduling to be worked out between employers and employees. Suggesting a one-day a week flexible schedule to test its impact may be a way to ease into more flexible schedules on an on-going basis.
Even with a clear understanding of expectations in place, there can be downsides to flexible work schedules. One area mom, who wished to remain anonymous, noted, “Because my schedule is so SASSY | November 2014

Q:
I'm struggling to keep my sanity while juggling my at home business and family. I feel like I'm being pulled in all directions and not doing a good enough job with either one. How can I find a balance?
Answer: : It’s the quintessential question. How can I have it all? Well, my answer is that you really can have everything that’s important to you.
When you work from home, the boundaries can get blurry. People assume you have time to do things because you’re not making a commute or reporting to a live human boss. This scenario requires discipline to NOT do the things that don’t drive your life mission forward. It seems it’s often easier to say YES to other people’s requests, than to say YES to your best and most fulfilling life. One of the keys to consider for finding a good balance, is the quality of your relationships. You get to decide what you want to create with the people in your life. If today, you assessed honestly the current quality of those relationships most important to you, you will easily see ways to make improvements. Then it’s simply a matter of making commitments to do what it takes to either let some relationships go, our build other ones up. A rich life is created through experiences, and those experiences are generally best shared with people you love. Yes, the laundry needs to get done, and your family needs to eat. Consider that you are choosing the way you spend your precious time, and get creative about ways to outsource some tasks that get in the way of living the way you most want to live. 36

Q:
I own a cleaning business, specializing in cleaning small office buildings. I have several regular clients. I have not raised my rates for over two years and really need to ask for more money. I just don't know how to do it tactfully. I don't want to scare off clients. Please give me some guidance.
Answer: It’s scary to think that raising your rates will result in clients leaving
you, and it is a real possibility. Without knowing the specifics of your services and your rates, I’ll give some generic guidance. First, step back and consider any efficiencies you can gain in your existing structure. Can you make changes to the schedule so that your driving route gets shorter? Can you negotiate with your suppliers to give you better rates for your cleaning supplies? If you hire people to help you, who are the slackers? (Come on, you know who I’m talking about!) Coach them up or let them go if they cause a profit leak. Once you’ve done everything you can do to optimize the way your business operates, you can then work on external factors. Is there a client you’d like to fire? Start with an increase there. Sometimes clients take more energy than they’re worth to keep happy. You can upcharge them a pain-in-the-butt fee, and if they go away, so be it. The gain in energy and time can be used to create a greater level of service for your favorite clients. For the rest of your clients, why not rethink your service to them? Ask them what they like and what they don’t like, gaining intelligence to help you further refine your value. Speak honestly to the purpose for your increase, and offer them something extra at the same time. They will appreciate your candid way of doing business, and really get how much you care about them. If you’ve created a service that’s highly valued, and your clients trust you, you’ve earned the right to look after your best interests as well as theirs. Transparent communication goes a long way toward building a loyal client base.

aptop computers and tablets allow us to turn anywhere from a table at our favorite coffee shop to a boulder on the side of a hilltop an office. The biggest question becomes how do we them there safely and what else do we need to take along? The answer can be found in making sure we have the right briefcase or laptop bag – or even a couple, depending on the circumstances. The first thing to take into consideration is the type and size of the equipment you’ll be transporting. Tablets that are already protected by a hard case can be transported safely in just about any briefcase or bag. Laptops require more thought, although a dedicated laptop bag is typically the best choice. If you only rarely take your laptop out, a large enough briefcase and a padded neoprene sleeve will work well, just make sure the briefcase is large enough. When shopping for a dedicated laptop bag, there are almost as many choices of styles as there are laptop models, starting with a basic neoprene sleeve. There are backpack, messenger bag, briefcase and rolling bag versions. In fact, you may find that you’ll want a couple of bags, depending on where you’re going and how much you need to take with you. If airline travel is part of your plan, look for a bag that is labeled “checkpoint friendly.” Although the description on some bags will note that you don’t have to remove your laptop during TSA checks, you may have to take it out for x-rays, depending on the airport. Laptop bag manufacturers typically make their bags to fit standard laptops, so you’ll find bags designed to fit laptops from 13” to 17”. You want a snug fit – a laptop that shifts in the bag is more likely to be damaged in an accident – so a bigger bag isn’t necessarily the best bet. Quick tip: if you have a more than one laptop, say one for work as well as a personal laptop, and they’re different sizes, purchase a laptop bag that fits the larger computer and use a neoprene sleeve when transporting the smaller one. It will not only provide additional protection but will also keep it from shifting while you’re carrying it.
If you need to take your laptop with you frequently, remember that while size matters, the type of material used to construct it matters as well. Whatever your preference, from fashionable to serviceable, keep the material’s durability in mind. Good leather ages well and looks lovely for years. Nylon and other fabrics tend to wear well, too. Signs to look for when choosing a bag are double-stitched edges and the quality of the material and stitching. If either feel skimpy, chances are good the bag won’t outlast the laptop that’s in it. Sturdy zippers are must for any model, regardless of the material. Selfhealing zippers are the best bet. If you’re the ultimate road warrior princess, you can even purchase a case or bag made of Kevlar. The Rimowa Salsa Hybrid Small Business Multi-wheel model combines polycarbonate and Kevlar, as well as an integrated TSA combination lock. Another key consideration is the amount of stuff – like files, spare batteries, power cords, portable hard drives, etc. – that you’ll be taking with you. The more stuff, the more space you’ll need. Look for pockets and/or dividers for files, as well as zipped padded pockets for smaller items such as thumb drives, wireless cards, etc. An outside pocket can be invaluable for items you need to access quickly. And don’t forget about a place for a water bottle if you’re traveling long distances. Of course, the more you take with you, the heavier your bag will be. This is where a rolling bag comes in handy. It takes the weight off your shoulders – literally – and puts it on the wheels. When traveling, many will also double as a carry-on. Make sure to look for sturdy wheels with ball bearings for ease of use and longevity. Make a list of your needs, ideal size and how you’ll be using the bag, then enjoy shopping!

SEO Strategies for Local Small
Business By: Jillian Koeneman
Search..
.
By: Jillian
Koenema n
Let’s talk about SEO. You’ve heard about it, you know you should do it, you’ve probably Googled it, and you’re most likely still confused by it. Let’s begin by simplifying it.
What is SEO? SEO or Search Engine Optimization is
the process of affecting the visibility of a website or web page organically (unpaid). The Internet is larger than you know, and simply having a website does not guarantee that it will be seen or found in a search. Smart marketers use strategies to optimize their site for search engines because that’s where your new clients, customers and the curious masses are going to look for your services first. Local businesses are competing with larger funded organizations for the right to be found on the World Wide Web, and on a budget it is not an easy task…but it can be done! Here are six strategies that can get your local business seen, heard and reaping the benefits of really great SEO:
Start with Your Website
Optimizing your existing website is the first step. Make sure your businesses contact information is up to date and clearly visible upon virtual guest’s arrival. If your phone number can’t be found with one click, rearrange and make sure it is. Keywords are also an effective component of successful optimization. Do some research 40
November 2014 | SASSY
and make sure to include relevant city or regional keywords or phrases also appear in your site.
Make Local Pages
The “Big Three” in the realm of SEO are Google, Bing and Yahoo! These are the most common search engines, and they are your new best friends. Local businesses need to make sure that they establish page listings with each. Setting them up is as simple as typing in your information, phone number, hours of operation and location. These will function as separate entities so, be sure to practice consistent messaging across platforms.
Quality Photos
Most business listings on search engines allow and encourage you to upload pictures to your page. Do it. Do it really well. Most people searching for a service through search engines want to see pictures, and the better quality your pictures, the higher the possibility of gaining a new customer. Tip: Having a picture of your building location as your first page photo is the suggestion of most SEO experts. Your façade is the most recognizable feature for new customers.

Verify Your Listings
Consistency is key. Make sure that all of your listings include the same exact business name, address and phone number. Unfortunately, there may already be an existing page with your local businesses name on it. Fortunately it’s a relatively easy fix. Using a service like Yext or Localeze you can find where your business is listed on the Internet and then speed up the validation process through email, phone or mail. This creates business citations that serve the dual function of gaining trust and getting seen.

Optimize and Categorize
When you’ve uploaded fantastic pictures of your business, added keywords and made sure all traces of your business online point to the right phone, address and hours of operation, you need to make sure it is categorized properly. This is arguably the most important step in SEO. Search engines often ask you to place your business within up to five different categories to help them understand what you do. Research into keywords returns in this step, making sure your company is affiliated with a specific set of dimensions and delivered to the relevant groups of people.
Reviews
With Google’s new design (as well as most large search engine algorithms), a good or bad review can mean ALL the difference as to whether your local business gets seen. You want as many good reviews of your business as possible, but you also want them to come organically from genuine customers. Tip: NEVER WRITE YOUR OWN REVIEWS. You can casually ask for them, or inspire one out of existing customers by simply making sure there is a live link on your site labels “comments” on your website or Facebook pages. There are many, many, many, ways to start optimizing your web presence for search engines, and I hope that these tips work to quickly educate local businesses about the essentials and inspire them to continue to optimize their sites on a broader scale.
