ay might just be my favorite month of the year. For one thing, the spring flowers bloom continuously. The crocus and daffodils might be gone, but they were just the beginning. The hyacinths and tulips bloom in early May followed by iris, poppies and lilies. Of course, there are all of the flowering trees and shrubs – the Bradford pear trees, the red buds, the crabapple trees (both white and pink), dogwood trees, weeping cherries, tulip trees and magnolias. I don’t want to leave out the shrubs – lilacs, azaleas and rhododendrons. This blaze of color from all the flowers is backed up by the wonderful soft yellow green, pea green and deep red colors of the leaves budding out on the trees. It is such an artist’s palate and all you need to do is look around to see it. By May, we have usually seen the end of the snow and cold of winter even though we sometimes still have a mild frost or two. With the mild spring we have seen this year, I am hoping the cold weather is gone. The blue skies and sunshine bring such joy.

With winter gone, it’s time to bring out the spring and summer wardrobe. What fun it is to start the month with the Kentucky Derby and those giant flowery hats! And May is the month to honor our mothers on Mothers’ Day, often with flowers. Do you sense a theme here? It’s a slightly sad day for me because I still miss my mom a lot even though it has been over two years since I lost her. I wish all of our mothers a wonderful day!

May also ends with Memorial Day, a day when we honor all of our military veterans who died while in service to the US. It was originally called Decoration Day and began in the Civil War as a day to decorate the military graves with flowers and flags. On a much lighter note, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of the summer.

So, what’s not to like about May? With the beauty of the flowers, the rebirth of nature, the consistent warmer weather, spring clothes, honoring our moms and the promise of summer, it is definitely my favorite month. And, what’s not to like about our May issue of SASSY? In honor of Mother’s Day there is an article about gifts that Mom really wants. For Memorial Day you will find alternatives to the traditional cookout and an article about women in the military. And, for information about work/life balance, you will find articles about volunteering, the importance of taking your vacation time and being your own boss.

Upgrades
You Can Do In One Day By: Andrew Skipper

ost people have a list of to-do projects when it comes to their homes, but it can
be difficult to find the time to complete all these tasks! While it may seem overwhelming, the best way to tackle house projects is to dive right in and check them off the list one at a time. The feeling of accomplishment will inspire you to keep working your way through the list and before you know it, you’ll be enjoying the home of your dreams! Even if you only have a few hours to spare, have no fear!

Here are five upgrades you can do in just one day: Rearrange Furniture It’s easy to get bored with the layout of a room, especially if it’s been in the same configuration for years. Rearranging furniture is one of the quickest and most affordable ways to enhance a room, and the good news is, you can often do it yourself. First things first, make sure you come up with a layout that is functional. Your furniture groupings should facilitate conversation while also leaving a walkway through the room. Measure the room before you start moving pieces to make sure that everything will fit where you want it. Then, take all the small pieces and accessories out of the space. Starting with a clean slate will allow you to edit what you bring back into the room. Next, get your large anchor pieces—i.e. the sofa and media center— in place. Then take a walk through the rest of your house to see if there is anything that can be moved from room to room. You may find that a chair in the guest bedroom would work better in the living room. Perhaps there’s a side table in the den that can come out to the living room. Shopping from your own home is a great way to use pieces in new ways without spending money or time shopping at the store!
“Rearranging furniture is one of the quickest and most afordable ways to enhance a room”
Change Out Cabinet Hardware An easy way to upgrade a kitchen or bathroom is to change the cabinet hardware. There are so many options when it comes to knobs and drawer pulls. Think about the style of your room and then get online or go to your local hardware store to see what options will work for you. From classic to zany, there is something for every style. In a bathroom, why not opt for luxe handles like rock crystal or agate? In a kitchen, try swapping out dated hardware for sleek modern styles? Once you have your chosen handles and pulls, you can install them yourself. Depending on the shape and size, you may need a small drill to make new holes, but it’s still a DIY project that can be done in one day! SASSY | MAY 2016

Paint Or Wallpaper Perhaps the most dramatic change you can make to a room in one day is to paint or wallpaper the walls. The four walls in any room take up the most visual space and adding color or pattern is a sure way to achieve a dramatic effect. The most tedious part of either task is the prep-work. Moving furniture, washing walls, taping trim and laying drop cloths takes time, but if you start in the morning, by nightfall, your room can be painted and put back together. For a less involved project, try painting a feature wall behind a sofa or bed. This will take you less time and draw attention to the focal point of the room. The rule of thumb here is that the feature wall should be the wall opposite the door to the room—i.e. the first thing a person sees when they walk into the room.
“Adding color or pattern is a sure way to achieve a dramatic effect.”
Swap Light Fixtures Swapping out dated light fixtures is a great way to update a room and it can be done in no time. Be sure to measure the existing fixture so you don’t purchase something that hangs too low. Replacing a ceiling fan with a chandelier can add character and class to a bedroom. Changing out the dining room fixture and installing a new modern hanging light is an easy update! If you’re the DIY type, search the internet for how-to videos on changing light fixtures, but make sure that you take safety precautions seriously. If you’re uncomfortable in any way with doing this upgrade yourself, call a licensed electrician!

MAY 2016 | SASSY
Upgrade Plumbing Fixtures Faucets and other plumbing fixtures are like the jewelry to a kitchen or bathroom. If you’ve been living with old, leaky faucets with grime and water spots, it’s time to replace them. Upgrading your faucets and shower heads can give these rooms a fresh feel and keep your water usage efficient, thus saving you money on your monthly bill. Whether you choose to install these yourself or hire a plumber, the project can be done in one day and leave you with a clean, updated look.

Gifts Mom Really Wants This
Mother’s Day
M
By: Allison Boelcke Smith
other’s Day was established as an official US holiday in 1914 and takes place the second Sunday in May each year. Although it has been around for over 100 years, the sentiment has largely remained the same: honoring motherhood. If you’re looking for some new ideas beyond the standard card and flowers to thank your mother for all she has done, consider some of these gift ideas that will allow her to enjoy her day - after all, she deserves it!
2. Let Her Sleep Motherhood can be exhausting at times! A free, but extremely valuable, gift for Mother's Day is the gift of sleep. Volunteer to take over any morning tasks your mom usually handles and let her snooze, or corral everyone out of the house and let Mom enjoy an afternoon siesta. This gift will be especially appreciated for other mothers in your life, especially any single moms or military wives who may not have a regular support system to share childcare duties - and are severely lacking opportunities for uninterrupted sleep.
12
MAY 2016 | SASSY
1. Make Her Feel Appreciated Many moms gladly perform what is often referred to as "emotional labor" - performing tasks to ensure the happiness of those around them, such as planning birthday celebrations, decorating the house for holidays and cheering in the stands for every sporting event. However, even though moms often take on this role because they find it fulfilling to nurture their children, they likely desire to know it's acknowledged and valued by those around them. So, this Mother's Day, include a list of specific memories in a card, letter or scrapbook regarding the times your mom worked hard for your happiness and tell her how much you appreciate her effort.
3. Sentimental Gifts Get Mom a gift she can cherish long after a bouquet of flowers wilts. A gift that represents her life with her family will last a lifetime and can be enjoyed for years to come. Ideas for useful but sentimental gifts include: a personalized family cookbook filled with recipes and photos of traditional family-favorite dishes, a custom watercolor painting of a favorite family photo (search online for photo-to-painting services) or a scrapbook of photos and items that symbolize your family.
“Give her the gift of "permission" to relax and unwind.”
4. Quality Time Experiences tend to bring longer lasting joy than material items, so consider forgoing gifts and taking part in some time together with Mom. Think about some of her favorite activities she may not have as much time to participate in as she'd like, or something that's always interested her but she hasn't pursued. Plant some flowers together if Mom's got a green thumb, participate in a cooking class, play a sport or even take a trip whatever is personally meaningful to her.
5. A Day Off If Mom is always on the go, a day to herself to simply chill out and decompress can be a most welcomed gift. It may be a luxury she would rarely "allow" herself, even if she has the time. Give her the gift of "permission" to relax and unwind. Let her choose what she wants to do, and then make it possible for her to do so, such as by providing child care, providing meals, etc.
6. Something On Her To-Do List Many mothers live by an ever-present “To-Do List,” with many items that seem to stubbornly hang around because they don't have the time, money or ability to take care of them. Think about tasks Mom has been mentioning she's been wanting to get around to and help her get them off her to-do list once and for all. You could either perform it yourself, pay to hire someone else or arrange to have it done to unveil as a surprise.
Honoring the mothers in your life doesn’t require expensive gifts or elaborate celebrations. Make the day meaningful by expressing your gratitude in a way that makes them feel truly cherished for all that they do to impact their families. SASSY | MAY 2016

Women
In The Military By: Jamie Lober
W
omen are proudly serving in the military and the times have certainly changed. “There are as many people in the military as there are reasons why they became interested,” said Patricia Murphy, president of Air Force Women Officers Associated. The one commonality is they are glad they made the decision. “Someone may have family in the military; they may have heard a recruiter at their high school or college; or they may have met a boyfriend in the service who recommended it,” said Murphy. Those are just a few possible routes and there is no stereotypical person who serves. “You must have a high school degree to be listed and you must have a college degree to become an officer and then it depends on the career field or job that you will do whether additional training is required,” said Murphy.
Murphy has served 30 years and finds that many people wind up serving for a long time. “The opportunity to travel and see the world is an advantage and I was able to get my master’s degree at night and on the weekends and do different kinds of work,” said Murphy. She has never heard of anybody having regrets. “It was a great job and I loved it,” said Murphy. Women are making an increasing presence. “About 19 to 20 percent in the air force are women and when I came in there was a law that said no more than two percent could be women, so it has changed a lot in terms of things like the number of women being restricted, there being certain grades they could not be promoted to or bases they could not be assigned,” said Murphy. Advocacy has made an impact. “There are more reasonable policies now and people are being treated more equally,” said Murphy.
“The opportunity to serve your country is probably the best reason to join.”
The best part about being in the military is that anyone can do it. “Anybody could be a good fit if they want to; it is really a matter of attitude,” said Murphy. The people who serve are extremely diverse. “The military needs to represent this country so that means all sorts of people should be in and it is a matter of just finding the right job for the person and seeing where they fit in,” said Murphy. Then you decide on your commitment level and how you want to contribute. “There are lots of jobs from clerical work to mechanical work to flying airplanes to transportation or logistics jobs to personnel jobs to public affairs jobs,” said Murphy. Essentially it is an entire industry. 14
MAY 2016 | SASSY
You will learn lifelong skills by serving. “You learn to manage or lead people and get the best for people and out of people as well as get to expand your own knowledge,” said Murphy. Holding different jobs can be helpful and there are opportunities for advancement. The disadvantages are slim. “If you do not want to travel or go where they want you go to it is a disadvantage or your personal circumstances may change,” said Murphy. It can be hard to maintain a career and family at the same time but is not impossible. “I think the opportunity to serve your country is probably the best reason to join,” said Murphy.
“Anybody could be a good fit if they want to; it is really a matter of attitude.”
It is worth taking the time to learn more about the experience of serving in the military especially as a woman. “There are distinctions in each service and basic general rules that apply to all military because the mission of each is different, so you have the army more concerned about people doing logistics work on the ground; the air force more concerned about loading airplanes because that is what they do; and the navy having their people dealing on ships and moving transportation on ships,” said Murphy. It is never too early or too late to get involved. “I think we underestimate our young people too often and I am very optimistic about those who are now serving and who will serve,” said Murphy.

5 Alternatives To The Memorial Day Cookout
By: Meagan Church
Memorial Day and cookouts are somewhat synonymous. But, what if you don’t feel like firing up the grill this time around? Maybe you’ve had a long work week and the last thing you want to do is prepare an entire meal for a group of guests, even though you really want to spend time relaxing with your friends.
Try one of these five alternatives to the Memorial Day cookout: Progressive Dinner
Deck Crawl
Invite friends to share in the hosting responsibilities through a progressive dinner. Each friend hosts a different part of the meal (appetizer, main course, dessert, second dessert…). Instead of camping out in one person’s backyard for the evening, take dinner on the road and travel to a different house for each course. Choose a theme for the evening—such as Italian, Mexican, AllAmerican—and let each host interpret it in her own way.
A deck crawl is the same concept as a progressive dinner, but instead of having to drive to each other’s houses, you walk next door. This is a great way to spend an evening with neighbors, traveling from one backyard to another. Each house prepares a different dish and drink. If alcohol is on the menu, this is a preferred alternative to driving from location to location.
16
MAY 2016 | SASSY
Dessert Bar Who needs burgers and corn on the cob when all you really want is the last course? Host a dessert bar with various options and indulge for one evening. This could be an ice cream sampler, cookie bake-off, pie extravaganza or a hodge-podge of deliciousness. Just keep in mind that a follow-up 5K run may be recommended.
Game Night Pop some popcorn, mix up some margaritas and pull out the board games. Spend the evening gathered around the table with board games like Scrabble (the original Words with Friends) or Settlers of Catan. No fancy meals and exhausting prep time is required. Or do a middle school throwback and dust off Girl Talk for an evening sure to be filled with lots of laughter and reminiscing.
Wine and Canvas If you and your friends are the artsy type, host your own wine and canvas night. Search Pinterest for easy painting tutorials. You buy the supplies, and ask your friends to bring some wine and snacks. Of course paintings may vary according to wine consumption and become more abstract as the evening progresses.
We want all people to experience more of life's precious moments with healthy hearts and minds. So until there's a world free of heart disease and stroke, we'll be working to make a healthier, longer life possible for everyone. her wedding is why. “Bueller? Bueller?”
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Turns 30! 17 Things You Didn’t Know About this Iconic 80s Film
By: Lisa A. Beach
Saying these two words to anyone over the age of 14 usually evokes a smile and conjures up images of Ferris Bueller, the loveable high school slacker who ditched school to romp around Chicago with his friends all day in John Hughes’ iconic ‘80s film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Can you believe it’s been 30 years since the movie’s debut? Released in 1986 (the same year as Pretty in Pink, another Hughes’ cult classic), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off follows endearing rule-breaker Ferris (played by Matthew Broderick), his gorgeous girlfriend Sloane Peterson (played by Mia Sara) and nervous best-bud Cameron Frye (played by Alan Ruck) as they cleverly concoct a get-out-of-school alibi to explore Chicagoland for the day. After sly slacker Ferris fakes an at-death’s-door illness to skip school, he teams up with Sloan to convince worrywart Cameron to come along for the ride. All hell breaks loose as they dodge the malevolent principal Ed Rooney (played by Jeffrey Jones) staying just one step ahead of him until the bitter end where Rooney boards a school bus disheveled and defeated. Ready to fall in love all over again with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Check out these fun facts from IMDB, Mental Floss and other sources:
1. 18
MAY 2016 | SASSY
John Hughes wrote the entire script for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in only six days. Released in 1986, the movie was #10 at the box office that year.
2.
3.
In the original script, Hughes had Ferris stealing from his father to fund his day-long shenanigans, but he ended up cutting the scene because he didn’t want Ferris to look like a thief. Also in the original version, Ferris had a younger brother and sister.
11. It pays to have friends in high places. After they appeared
Can you imagine anyone but perfectly cast Matthew Broderick playing the role of lovable Ferris? But a roster of A-listers were considered for the lead, including John Cusack, Jim Carrey, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr. Eric Stoltz and Michael J. Fox.
12. Hughes filmed the movie’s famous “Twist and Shout”
4.
John Hughes named the lead character after his childhood friend Bert Buehler.
5.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was not the first time Broderick and Ruck had worked together. They both appeared on Broadway in 1985 in Biloxi Blues, Neil Simon’s semiautobiographical play.
6.
Who needs teen actors when you can hire twentysomethings to fill the roles? Both Broderick (23) and Ruck (29) had been out of high school at least five years when they portrayed Cameron and Ferris.
7.
Ruck was not the first choice for the part of hypochondriac Cameron. Emilio Estevez turned down the role first.
8.
In a 2015 interview with MovieFone, Ruck said he (gasp!) hated Ferris Bueller's Day Off for a short time since it typecast him as a “one-trick-pony” who couldn’t snag another role. With hindsight, however, and a successful 30-year career behind him (including a six-year stint on Spin City), Ruck has grown to appreciate the movie and its cult following.
9.
Jennifer Grey (who played Jeanie Bueller, Ferris’ sarcastic older sister) and Matthew Broderick got engaged after filming wrapped. But after they were involved in a fatal car crash while vacationing in Ireland, they ended their engagement.
10. John Hughes loved the Detroit Red Wings hockey team, which explains why Cameron wears a red Gordie Howe jersey throughout the entire movie.
in the 1984 movie Red Dawn together, Jennifer Grey recommended Charlie Sheen for the role of the spaced-out drug addict in the police station. To prepare for his scenestealing cameo, Sheen didn’t sleep for two days. scene---where Ferris takes center stage on a parade float--during a real parade. Every year, Chicago hosted the Von Steuben Day Parade (an annual German-American event) that included a route through downtown Dearborn Street. However, according to Noah Graff in his documentary called Saving Ferris, the parade no longer runs the same route. Why? Since the Oklahoma City bombing and 9/11, authorities felt that the federal buildings in the area posed too much of a security risk.
13. Some of the best moments in the film are unscripted, such as the dancing construction worker and window washer who got their groove on during the parade. Finding it funny, Hughes told his cameramen to film the spontaneous dancing.
14. Another unscripted moment? Broderick, who could not play the clarinet at all, improvised the scene by picking up the prop, squeaking out a few horrible notes and deadpanning to the camera, “Never had ONE lesson!”
15. Hughes wrote no dialogue for the droning economics teacher (played by Ben Stein). Instead, Stein delivered an actual lecture on supply side economics in his nowtrademark dry delivery. According to a CNN interview transcript, Stein’s impressive resume includes former presidential speech writer, attorney and economist.
16. Check out these 10 Bueller blunders in this fun YouTube video compiled by Movie Mistakes.
17. Ferris Bueller the movie spawned Ferris Bueller the TV series which ran for only 13 episodes from 1990-91. Guess who played Jeanie Bueller in the TV show? None other than Jennifer Aniston before she hit it big in Friends.
In the infamous words of Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Arguably the most famous (and most loved) let’s-play-hooky movie of all time, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is currently available on Netflix. But their movies can go in and out pretty fast, so if you don’t stop to watch it soon, you could miss it. SASSY | MAY 2016

Take a Deep breath Small Changes to Manage Stress By: Christina Clark
N
aturally waking up early, drinking hot lemon water and doing a morning Sun Salutation sounds divine doesn’t it? Perhaps you’re the opposite and sleeping until at least noon in fluffy sheets sounds better? Or maybe making time for a long walk in the woods for an afternoon? Letting the sun graze your face on the beach, listening to the waves roll in and out… we all have a different idea of what a feeling totally stress-free and relaxed means. For some of us, it’s even just 15 minutes of peace and quiet when the kids are reading, the dog is sleeping and dinner is in the oven. Today’s demands have us synced with our smartphones, able to be contacted at the light touch of a screen from our boss, clients, family, friends, school…we can feel bombarded. When we have apps that sync multiple Google calendars together (which probably wouldn’t exist without a very real need for that sort of thing), we
know we’re a busy population. Taking a small sliver out of the day to decompress and give yourself back some of that energy that you’re always putting back out into the world by working, taking care of family and friends and getting that never-ending to-do list is important to not just our stress-level but our health.
Create a Space
As an esthetician in a spa, one of my main objectives is to create a soothing environment where my guests can relax and experience “calm” somewhere in their lives. The space is painted a soothing color, the massage tables are cozy and inviting, there is soft music playing and often candles are lit. All of that happens before a service even begins. Witnessing someone take a seat, take in their first deep breath that they have for hours that day, exhale and sink into a seat is so telling that we don’t give ourselves the space and moments we need every day. Creating a quiet space, or even a moment, intentionally as part of everyday to meditate, pray or simply just inhale and exhale for a few minutes can make all of the difference in how the rest of the afternoon or evening plays out. Keep a candle, an essential oil or incense nearby in an aroma that invites you to take deep breaths and relax in a space that you can take anywhere from a five minute break to an hour. Olfactory memory is linked to strongly evoking emotions, so finding one that transports you to a slower state of mind is a good goal (a good place to start is lavender, sandalwood or peppermint).
“Endorphins Make You Happy”
Physical activity sounds stressful itself, but it can help to create a time for you to physically work out something on the mind. Trying different activities, from 20

simply walking around the block, to running a few miles (depending on your current level), breaking out the bicycle, lifting weights, hula hooping or taking a group physical activity can be extremely cathartic. “When stress affects the brain, with its many nerve connections, the rest of the body feels the impact as well. So it stands to reason that if your body feels better, so does your mind. Exercise and other physical activity produce endorphins— chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers—and also improve the ability to sleep, which in turn reduces stress,” explains the website for the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA, adaa.org). In a less official capacity, Elle Woods, from the 2001 movie Legally Blonde, also explained this in a little more plain terms: “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins makes you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands. They just don’t.”
Unplug
Taking the time to shut off cellphones (or turn them on silent and leaving them in the other room, at least) is important. It gives us a little distance from work e-mails, the constant social media updates and gives us a moment to make eye contact with those we are with, or the option to open a book we’ve had on the night stand for a few weeks. The simple act of closing the laptop or shutting down the cellphone can mean an escape all its own that you didn’t know you needed. So go ahead, don’t feel guilty about giving yourself the well-deserved time. Self-care is important, and managing our stress by taking time to care for ourselves means we can be better ready to face the tasks and responsibilities from day to day. Fitting three deep, intentional breaths into every few hours of work, exercising and finding a space to allow ourselves to relax can mean the difference between burning out and shining bright.

Volunteer Within Your

lmost two years ago, I joined the not-forprofit organization, The Junior League of South Bend, Inc. as a volunteer. I selected this organization to join because it helps other notfor-profits in the area succeed by raising funds and providing volunteers.

The Junior League of South Bend, Inc. ( JLSB) introduces you to other not-forprofits through projects they have each year. To get help from JLSB, a not-forprofit submits a form requesting help with a project they want to get started. One of the stipulations JLSB requires of the not-for-profit is that members of the Junior League must be able to volunteer on the project in order to receive the funding. The Junior League of South Bend raises the money through its various fundraising events during the year. I was elected to be on the project committee for Hope Ministries Playscape and Garden. At the time, I was working for an architecture, engineering and construction management firm, Troyer Group, and knew I could be an asset to this team. This project is to help elevate the HighScope rating for Hope Ministries’ Hope4Kids. In the early meetings we brainstormed on items we would like to see in the playscape area. JLSB’s volunteers performed some valuable research for Hope Ministries in terms of coming up with ideas to have within in the playscape. After we met several times, the question was raised that would we need a designer to draw up the plans for the natural playscape and garden. Through my work experiences, I knew exactly what they needed. We made introductions. Hope Ministries and representatives from Troyer Group met and discussed the elements of the project. Hope Ministries decided to have Troyer Group design the playscape area and garden. I was a part of this project because of my involvement with JLSB. . This project will not only help the residents of Hope but also the community. It will give the community a sense of pride and provide the children with an engaging environment in which to learn and grow. Being a volunteer means you bring your own expertise to the table and provide the not-for-profit with your network that will expand their reach within your community. Without volunteers, not-for-profits could not fund their programs and the services they provide.
“It will give the community a sense of pride.”
Think about the skills you could offer to a local not-for-profit and reach out to Goodwill Industries, American Heart Association, A Rosie Place, St. Vincent De Paul, the Food Bank and The Junior League of South Bend, Inc. All of these organizations would love to have you and not only will they benefit from your volunteering, but you will too!
*The Hope Ministries Natural Playscape and Garden is currently in the fundraising process. Marianne Weesner recently relocated to Chicago, IL but looks forward to seeing the project at its completion. SASSY | MAY 2016

How To Be Your Own Boss By: Meagan Church
O
ver a decade ago, I looked around my cubicle and said, “This isn’t working for me.” I spent my days staring at a reflection of sunlight on the ceiling, unable to see the window from where I sat, as I wrote about things like RV toilets. I knew something had to change. And soon enough it did.
It has been over a decade since I left that cubicle to start my own business and become my own boss. It sounds like it was a simple enough transition, but the truth is that it was a scary leap that has taught me a lot over the years. With being your own boss comes both freedom and responsibility. If you’re thinking of making a similar leap, consider these five tips on how to be your own boss:
Get dressed.
“
Start your day with intentionality and purpose.”
24
MAY 2016 | SASSY
When I first became my own boss, my mentor gave me this advice, “Get up each morning, shower and get dressed like you would any other morning.” My office was in my own home, so what did it really matter if I showered and changed out of my pajamas? After all, isn’t working in my pajamas a perk of working from home? But, he was right. Don’t just roll yourself out of bed and lounge around all day with the computer. Start your day with intentionality and purpose. Even if you are working at home, get yourself in the professional mindset by starting your day as if you were going into the office.
Write down your goals. Distractions happen. Whether it’s the husband, the kids, the laundry, the dog who wants to go for a walk or the tempting business deal that you’re not sure is a good idea, distractions are always present. That’s why you need to know what you’re working towards. Write down your goal and put it in a place where you see it often to remind yourself of what you’re doing. When a distraction rises, read your goal and refocus.
Know yourself. Whether you will be operating a one-person endeavor or have 50 people working under you, as your own boss, you are a leader. To be an effective leader, you must know how you operate, what your strengths and weaknesses are. Spend some time learning about your personality type, your motivations, your turn offs and more. The better you know yourself, the better you can lead.
Outsource when needed. Weaknesses aren’t necessarily a bad thing. We all have them. The good news is that our weaknesses are sometimes other people’s strengths. If you know you are weak in an area, outsource it, so you can better pour into your strengths. If numbers aren’t your thing, hire an accountant. Or if you are a great idea generator, but need help on actually executing a plan, then find an assistant who can take your ideas and make them realities.
“
Weaknesses aren’t necessarily a bad thing.”
Set boundaries. Let’s be honest; balance is a myth. There is no way to have a perfectly balanced life, but boundaries do help. Schedule work time and personal time. Respect your work time by not allowing distractions to get in the way. If you have the ability to set your own schedule, you may be tempted to take on tasks that seem like good ideas, but in the end only serve as distractions. Learn to say no to those things. At the other end of the spectrum, as your own boss, it can be difficult to turn off the work. It may be 9:00 P.M., but you want to check your email one more time or text that client to check on a project. Life may not always be completely balanced, but set and respect boundaries to keep order.
Being your own boss may seem like a dream job and, let me just say, it can be. Remember, with great power also comes great responsibility, so be intentional and focused and don't forget to change out of those pjs.

Take Those
Vacation Days! By: Jamie Lober
W
orkplace demands for many women are on the rise and it is harder to escape when your e-mail comes straight to your cell phone. According to Glassdoor.com, about 40 percent of employees take less than one-fourth of their earned vacation time annually. It is a new trend that some companies are now instating mandatory vacation policies where employees are forced to take a certain number of days off each year. The idea of forced vacation is that it can be particularly beneficial to the most dedicated employees who have a difficult time leaving their desk. It lets them focus on themselves and become reenergized. Unfortunately, folks are not taking vacation days as seriously as they used to. Project Time Off found that for decades Americans took advantage of the time they had earned but now Americans are taking the least amount of vacation days in nearly 40 years. They went on to reveal that the growing stockpile of unused paid leave is contributing to worker burnout and even larger balance sheet liabilities that directly affect a company’s bottom line. Studies show that taking vacation days leads to better physical and mental health as well as better performance when you return. Increased happiness alone should cause people to reevaluate the way they handle their vacation days.
26
MAY 2016 | SASSY
The American stereotype of being hardworking has been a deterrent to many people as far as taking days. Project Time Off investigated the reasons that people are reluctant to take vacation days from work and found common reasons to be that it is not easy to do because people have even more work to get done when they get back; feel nobody else can do their job for them; or cannot afford to take the time off. There is also a misperception that if someone takes vacation days they seem replaceable and they are afraid of getting laid off. The given days off are usually the holidays of New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the following Friday and Christmas. Depending on how long you have served the company, your number of vacation days may increase. Companies also typically offer between one to three days for bereavement if you are mourning a loss. Jury duty is a unique situation where the company usually pays the difference between the regular salary and what you receive for serving on the jury. The Society for Human Resource Management went as far as to say that unused vacation days can be detrimental. They said that taking paid time off is important for both morale and inspiring
creativity. Human resource professionals across the board believe that it is extremely important to take vacation days citing that it affects factors related to talent management including morale, wellness, performance, retention, a positive culture and productivity. If you are in a management role at work, encourage your employees to take vacation days and talk about the benefits. Make sure that there is not a stigma or negative association with taking the much-needed vacation time. If you are not sure about the policy on vacation days, take the time to sit down with your manager or human resources department and learn the rules. According to the Society for Human Resource Management, more than onethird of employers require employees to use all of their vacation time each year or forfeit the remainder. Some companies let you roll over vacation days but you want to be sure to know the details on how that works as often they may limit the number that can be saved. If you have not thought about vacation days and how they affect you and your family, now is the time to do so. You will likely be more productive and able to concentrate better when you get back to work. Someone who is unhappy with their job may feel more satisfied after taking time to relax and rejuvenate. Project Time Off reported that taking time off is essential for a productive workforce, strong bonds with family and friends and a fulfilled life, so it is clear that taking a few extra days is worthwhile.

Unused vacation days can be detrimental.”

CAPS Superhero 5K Superheroes walk among us. Some of them run, too. We at Child and Parent Services (CAPS) know, because we saw more than 1,000 of you in downtown Elkhart for the CAPS Superhero 5K on April 16th. Close to 1,100 registered runners, walkers and fun runners joined us on the Civic Plaza for a beautiful, sunny day of fun to support a safe, healthy, happy future for every child in Elkhart County. In all, you superheroes in our community raised more than $40,000 – eight times our original goal! – for CAPS programs that work directly with children and families. Participants of all ages signed up alone or in super teams and answered the call to fill Civic Plaza with friends, family and neighbors who support the CAPS mission of ending child abuse. We gave out awards to our fastest runners, including top overall finisher Jason Potsander and top female finisher Christa Sadrzadeh, our most creative superhero costumes and our Superhero of the Year, Tim Portolese. Tim is a former member of the CAPS Board of Directors and has contributed much of himself to advance the cause of child well-being throughout the years. A fundraising team established by Tim’s friends and family in his honor, “Tim Portolese To The Max!” raised more than $8,000 and won our top fundraising award. The Lippert Components Chassis Division and BMG Goshen teams also raised nearly $3,000 and more than $1,000, respectively. For the 5K itself, Paula Turk at Stone Soup Promotions in Elkhart plotted a course through the north side of downtown Elkhart and through the beautiful Wellfield Botanic Gardens for our heroes. Allen Stewart brought his fellow costumed crusaders from the only superhero museum in the world, the Hall of Heroes Superhero Museum. Jason Bryant, Ashley Berger, Gary Meister and Darrel Yoder all provided their photographic talents. TaigMarks, Inc., lent us their office space downtown to use as race HQ. Vahid Sadrzadeh and Sara Rivest assisted EAPro with emcee duties. And nearly 100 volunteers from CAPS and the community made sure the experience was enjoyable and hassle free for as many people as possible!
More than 1,000 people participated in the CAPS Superhero 5K.
