T
his year’s November is quite a month. The election finally takes place on the 8th. No matter whether your candidate wins or loses, I think we will all be happy to see the end of the political advertisements on television and the constant barrage of campaign information on every media outlet. The next day, the 9th, we will celebrate with Sassy Magazine’s Glitz and Sass Holiday Fashion Show at the Morris Inn. I am really looking forward to this event as my first big event with the magazines! I want to focus on the event and on the Sassy Woman. The Glitz and Sass Fashion Show is coming back after missing a year and we are working hard to make it bigger and better than ever. We start with a beautiful setting at the Morris Inn on the campus of Notre Dame. The fashions will be presented by four boutiques: Bella’s Boutique, Judee’s Boutique, Stephenson’s of Elkhart and The Cinnamon Stick. But, the evening begins with a red carpet entrance with cocktails and heavy hors d’oeurvres along with music by the Jesse Ryan Project, with shopping and a live remote from U93. When the show starts at 6 P.M., things will get lively with our emcee Kerri Spencer and music by our Pro Shows dj. We will have a special guest appearance by Zarah Skelton, Mrs. Indiana 2016. And we will be honoring the 2016 Class of Women to Watch. A portion of our proceeds will go to the American Heart Association. And, we will be selling SASSY t-shirts from which the entire proceeds will go to the Heart Association. This issue will debut at the event so I hope you were able to attend. So, we are providing the glitz but you are bringing the sass. What is sass and what makes a woman sassy? We asked our Facebook followers that question and the common thread among the responses was confidence. Other descriptions include courage, compassion, drive, style, empathy, wittiness and uniqueness. The sassy woman is able to balance work, family and social life while setting aside time for herself. She helps lift up others with her positive attitude. I liked the way Tina Rohde phrased it: “Individuality, strong willed positive spirit, sassiness is what works for you personally making you your best self!” And along with that, a wink and a smile and you have a sassy woman. This month of SASSY Magazine is the fashion issue with more information about the boutiques in the fashion show. We are also re-introducing our Class of 2016 Women to Watch. There are stories about entertaining for a purpose and stopping the Black Friday Madness. You will also find an article on how to glitz up your home, and several other stories. I hope you enjoy this issue of SASSY Magazine and I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving.

5 Ways To Create
Glitz & Glam at Home
By: Andrew Skipper
Shiny Surfaces Nothing says glitz like reflective surfaces. Mirrors help bounce light around a room and mirrored furniture also adds sparkle. Consider changing out old hardware for something shiny like brass, silver, or chrome. These shiny surfaces immediately enhance a room and make it feel glam. For a more subtle look, opt for brushed brass or antiqued silver. These finishes are anything but dull and will give you that shine without sacrificing the glitz factor.
Sumptuous Fabrics Billowing drapes—like a theatre stage curtain, rich materials like velvet for upholstery, raw silk for curtain panels, and glamorous animal prints like leopard, cheetah, and zebra—just be careful to not let it get tacky. High quality fabrics are one of life’s ultimate luxuries. They can transform a room from basic to extraordinary. When selecting fabrics for a room, consider the textures and patterns that make you feel glamorous. Billowing drapes—akin to a theatre stage curtain— create a sense of drama and sumptuousness. Rich materials like velvet for upholstery and raw silk for curtain panels instantly make one feel pampered—like Marie Antoinette at Versailles. For a bit of sassy fun, use hints of animal prints like leopard, cheetah, and zebra. A cautionary word, though— the way to avoid animal prints feeling tacky is to use high-quality fabric. In other words, don’t even think of fleece cheetah as an option.

nOVEMBER 2016 | SASSY
Sophisticated Black Black is anything but boring. It goes with every color scheme and helps to ground a space while adding an air of sophistication. A black wall can be very dramatic especially if you hang a large gold-gilt framed mirror on it. Add a couple of antique brass candle sconces on either side along with a French settee underneath, and you’ve got the makings of a seriously glamorous room. If an entire wall—or dare I suggest room—of black is a bit much for you, consider using a piece or two of black furniture. A high gloss black desk with brass hardware conjures up feelings of glamour without being too girly. Even just a few touches of black throughout a room provide a counterpart for other elements.
Sexy Lighting Perhaps the most important element in a glitz & glam space is lighting. Even if you have the most gorgeous pieces in a room, if they aren’t lit properly, it’s all for naught. The best place to start is by putting overhead lights on dimmers. There’s nothing worse than a room that’s too bright—not sexy at all! It’s also important to have plenty of lighting options. In fact, each room should have at least 3 to 5 lamps. This allows you to control the amount of light at any given time, thus giving you the option to set a mood. For a truly spectacular effect, use pin lights to shine directly on specific pieces you want to draw attention to. Imagine a pin light perfectly hitting a gorgeous crystal bowl on a coffee table—breathtaking! Take things a step further by using uplights to highlight architectural features or illuminate curtain panels from below. These thoughtful touches help immensely to create a romantic atmosphere.
Something Unexpected Every room needs one unexpected thing to make it stand out. If you’re going for a glamorous feel, this can be fun. Why not gold leaf the ceiling? Why not hang a life size portrait on the wall? Why not upholster the walls in an exotic fabric? What about covering an entire wall in antiqued mirror tiles? Think about what would excite you every time you enter that room. Whatever makes you feel instantly sexy—that’s what you need more of! Glamorous rooms beckon and embrace with their femininity, soulfulness, and distinct personalities.

Stop the Black Friday
Madness!
How to Take a Lite Approach Instead By: Lisa A. Beach
W
hen Black Friday hits each year, it marks the unofficial start of the holiday season and kicks a shopping frenzy into high-gear. On this day, in particular, the insanity starts in the parking lot, where everyone fights for a spot in the overcrowded lot. It continues with the line of sleep-deprived shoppers snaking around the store’s entrance at 5 a.m., all hoping to be lucky enough to snag an early-bird sale. Sometimes it leads to a tussle with frantic bargain-hunters scuffling over a limited supply of rock-bottom-priced electronics. Occasionally, stories of out-of-control shopper’s rage end up on the nightly news. But there’s another way. Instead of hopping into the Black Friday fray, take it down a notch. This year, adopt a lite approach to Black Friday that allows you to calmly kick-off the holiday season–and still enjoy great deals–without being pulled into the madness. How? Follow the “dos and don’ts” of this lite approach to lessen the stress of Black Friday.
DON’T spend your precious Thanksgiving camped out at a store trying to stake your place in line. Years from now, do you really want your family memory to focus on that one Thanksgiving when you snagged a digital camera for half-price at that early bird sale? DO adopt Thanksgiving traditions that bring your family together, like picking out your favorite float in the Macy’s Parade on TV or roasting chestnuts in the oven for a pre-dinner snack. 10
nOVEMBER 2016 | SASSY
DON’T head out early. Yes, you’ll probably miss some of those 5 a.m. doorbuster deals. Or will you? Many stores now offer online deals that rival those early-bird, in-store deals, so you’re not necessarily missing out. Check the online deals late in the evening, well after you’ve enjoyed your Thanksgiving dinner, and first thing on Black Friday morning. DON’T subscribe to the “musthave” mentality. You will feed into the frenzy if you think you cannot come home empty-handed. DO recognize the difference between a gift someone truly needs (like a new pair of shoes to replace the pair that no longer fits) and a gift someone simply wants¬ (like the hot, justreleased video game).
DO sleep in. Create a new Black Friday tradition where you meet a friend for coffee in the morning. Catch up over breakfast so you’re relaxed and ready to enjoy the day, rather than sleep-deprived and rushed. Plus, by popping into a store midmorning, you skip the door-buster madness. Instead, you’re greeted with plenty of available parking spaces; more relaxed, thinned-out crowds; and employees who actually have time to help you.
DON’T go out without a plan. You don’t want to waste time on trafficclogged roads because you’re zig-zagging across town from one far-away store to another. DO have a strategy. Map out your day so you’re visiting a cluster of stores near each other, whether it’s a mall, shopping outlet or a string of big-box stores in the same part of town.
Extra Bold Bold Medium
DON’T go it alone, trying to hunt for all the bargains on your own. DO enlist help. Partner up with your spouse to divvy the shopping duties, with one of you at home shopping online while the other hits the local stores. Or team up with the friend you met for breakfast to share the best deals you’re both seeking. For example, maybe you scour the best camcorder deals while she searches for those one-day-only bargains on the hot new toy of the season.

When you head home hours later with bags of bargains and a smile on your face, you can thank your Black Friday lite approach for the calm kick-off to your holiday season. SASSY | nOVEMBER 2016

National
Unfriend Day By: Rita Miller
November 17, 2016
is National “Unfriend” Day in the United States. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel christened “Unfriend Day” in 2014, asking Facebook users to weed out true friends from superfluous acquaintances. Kimmel believes that true friends are the people who will help you move on a Saturday, bring hot soup over when you have the flu, and actually give you a ride when your car is in the shop. Fake friends are people who troll you on social media sites, trying to get you to buy items you don’t need or strike up business deals for themselves. Fake friends also include those who always seem to have magical lives, as proven by multiple posts of parties, friends and fabulous times. Studies have proven that these types of posts can actually depress readers. This can be dangerous to people of all ages, the vulnerable teens, the mobile millennials, and the middle age set, as the fantasy of a perfect life smacks them in the face every time they sign on to social media! A chance remark at the dog park this morning reminded me of this danger. A fellow dog lover commented that today’s kids don’t have real role models anymore. Role models have been replaced with reality shows and their steady stream of drama ridden people. Everyone wants to have Kim Kardashian’s hips or Kendra Wilkinson’s hair or even “The Bachelorette’s” choice of husbands.
What can you do to start pruning your own friend list, be it social media sites or not?
Following are a few suggestions: Are you on multiple social media sites every day? Do you try to maintain a presence on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, adding friends and connections every day? Has any of this actually enhanced your life or do you find that you are so busy with social media that you don’t have time for coffee with a friend or a movie with the kids? I’ve moved my attentions to only one site: Twitter. The banter is quick and informative and there is no pressure to keep up with acquaintances and friends every minute of the day. 12
nOVEMBER 2016 | SASSY
Are you getting to the point where people are endorsing you on LinkedIn and you’ve never actually met the person?! This has happened to me and it made me rethink the value to myself and anyone else of a phantom endorsement. I don’t post my endorsements unless I’m sure I earned them and I don’t add connections for the sake of adding to my numbers. I use the site strictly to praise local businesses who deserve the accolades and to connect with people of similar interests.

Do you have friends on Facebook whom you haven’t seen in years, or people whom simply don’t have time to foster close ties? Maybe it is time to weed out “friends” to those you can call in an emergency or those you really are interested in. This can free up a tremendous amount of time and anxiety by not following everyone in a fifty-mile radius!
Find a role model or mentor whom you respect and keep that connection going by talking frequently or sending a note with some good news. We recently had a meeting at work with three people from Alabama. One of those people sent me a hand written note after the meeting. Now that is a person I want to keep in touch with! So maybe National Unfriend Day isn’t such a bad thing. I’m going to try some of the ideas and focus on some real, personal time this holiday season. Hope you do too!

nOVEMBER 2016 | SASSY
itness trends are constantly shifting. Our culture has seen everything from step-aerobics to spinning, kettlebell to kick-boxing, yoga to Pilates, and many other forms of interesting ways to tone and strengthen our bodies. These days, however, it is all about dance. Dance fitness training is becoming a new favorite way to work both the body and the mind. Through dance style workouts, long and lean muscles can be earned. Due to the spontaneous nature of dance, muscle confusion is a factor that helps create a sculpted and balanced body. Top notch dance fitness companies that cater to the stars, such as Tracy Anderson Method, Body by Simone, and DanceBody, have built successful programs that have helped shape some of the most beautiful bodies in Hollywood. The dance fitness method that is beginning to trickle its way throughout the country compliments Cardio Dance classes with a unique sculpting program that is set to music and designed to give students a dancer physique. The following workout, created for SASSY readers, is this method of dance strength training; it is called Dance Sculpt. Before moving through the following exercises, twenty minutes of dancing is recommended. Find a local Cardio Dance class, a dance fitness video, or an online source, YouTube has many, and shake it until you are both sweating and smiling! Then grab a mat or a towel and work your way through the following routine. Remember, do the moves to the beat of a favorite song, or use the provided playlist, so that the workout presents as a dance style workout. Small ankle weights and hand weights are recommended but not required. Another important aspect to consider is in addition to the physical benefits, dancing also helps boost brain power. Psychology Today states, "Through once weekly regular aerobic dance training, anyone can maximize his or her brain function." Lastly, dancing is just good fun. Find a workout that is effective, smart and joyful, it will enhance your life!
Movement 2 -
"The Tricep Back-Step"
Begin Movement 2 with the right arm lowered and bent at side. Right leg starts in the same "popped" position as in the previous movement. Straighten right arm and leg in a backward motion and then back to start to complete 1 repetition. Complete 20-30 reps and then go to Movement 1 to begin left side. *Hint-keep upper arm still and slightly behind while the lower arm moves. The non-working arm is on hip.
Movement 5 -
"The Muffin Mover"
Movement 4 Movement 3 -
"The Rockette"
Begin Movement 3 in a side-lying position on right forearm with right leg long and pointed on ground. Kick left leg up and then lower to ground in a bent position with ball of foot on floor. Then kick up right leg while simultaneously lifting right hip. This is 1 repetition. Left arm stays up throughout. Complete 20-30 repetitions and then move on to Movement 4. Do Both Movements on the same side and then start over to Movement 3. Complete 20-30 repetitions of Movement 4 also. As in the first 2 Movements, perform these moves to the beat of a song, like a Rockette would! *Ankle weights will enhance this move but are not necessary.
"The Arabesque Push" Begin Movement 4 on both hands and left knee with right leg lifted and bent. The right hip should be turned out. Keeping leg lifted high, bend arms and lower chest towards floor while simultaneously extending right leg. Return back to start position to complete 1 repetition. Complete 20-30 reps and then go back to Movement 3 to perform both movements on the left side. *Hintkeep shoulders down throughout exercise.
Begin Movement 5 in a side-lying position on right forearm. Beginners should keep the right knee down, while practiced individuals should stack their feet as shown in picture. Lower and lift the right hip to complete 1 repetition. Perform 20 to 30 repetitions while holding the left arm in air with a small weight throughout exercise. Repeat on left side before moving on to Movement 6. Remember to move that hip to the beat! Muffin tops beware of this effective waist slimmer.
Movement 6 -
"The Ab Dance" Begin Movement 6 supine with hands supporting back of head, head and chest lifted, lower back anchored down on mat, and legs lifted up and straight as can be. Keeping lower back down, lower legs with right leg bent and left leg straight. Return to start position and then lower legs with left leg bent and right leg straight. This completes 1 repetition. Perform 10-12 repetitions to the rhythm of a song. To modify, do not lower legs very far. *Ankle weights will enhance this exercise but are not necessary.

Your Neighbor Give Good Cheer This Season
emperatures are dropping and that means we start to look for ways to keep our bodies and our hearts warm. Sending warm wishes is something that comes naturally to many, but we also want to warm up our homes by opening to our loved ones and provide for them. It also forces us to realize others don’t have that we have, and it ignites an overall spirit of giving back to causes and people that pull at our heart strings. Whether our motivations are related to participating in church activities, organization or club activities, or personal draws…as long as we are benefitting another, it is a worthy cause. Giving at every level is important, and finding the level that either pushes you out of one’s comfort zone or puts you right into it is important. Here’s a few things to keep in mind as you explore your options this fall and winter!
Do Your Research Doing research on the organizations to which you give is important. It’s easy to give to something to raise awareness, but see if it goes towards more than that and can fund a cause in a deeper way as well. For Sassy Magazine’s Glitz & Sass 2016 Holiday Fashion Show on November 9, 2016, a portion of the proceeds goes to the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Go Red for Women. “The money we raise locally in Indiana provides lifesaving funds for research, education and advocacy in our communities,” said Laura Guy, Director of the American Heart Association. “Since 2001, the American Heart Association has directed over $1.8 million to local research programs at both the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University School of Medicine. We are currently providing more than $5 million to fund 31 studies at Indiana research institutions,” explained Guy of how the money is used in the state of Indiana to further their cause locally. Furthermore, “The AHA has launched a number of education programs and materials in the community. We work to educate our local healthcare community on the latest research advances to provide care to you and your family,” said Guy. They also provide “CPR Anytime” kids in select schools in the Michiana area. 16

Small Gifts DO Matter Donations to charity auctions and raffles is a way to give to a cause or an organization that you support, without losing a huge amount of capital. Donating a certificate for a service of a certain value, or a gift package of a company’s goods, gives an item for others to place a bid on. In the end, you are donating the value and the ability to provide something in exchange for a money value someone else is able to foot the capital that will go to the fundraiser. Volunteering Finding local operations that need an extra hand, somewhere to volunteer by offering to teach a class, sharing a type of art or education is important to the betterment of the community. Reaching out to local non-profits is a good way to find a way to find volunteer opportunities and ways to give your time or skills. Volunteering in church or soup kitchens that may need an extra hand is also another opportunity to get in touch and make a personal difference in someone’s day. For example, the Center for the Homeless in South Bend has a long list of opportunities to volunteer in various capacities at the center, from front desk to childcare to assisting in adult education.
Attending Local Events Sometimes a party is the best way to get people behind a cause and raise money, and for some it’s the way they are comfortable giving. They are a great way to raise a larger donation amount from a sponsor to the beneficiary. Events like Sassy’s own “Glitz and Sass Fashion Show 2016” and the local gathering of local talents and those from large companies involved in the Center for the Homeless’s event “Lipsync With Our Stars” raise money for causes in our community while attending a fabulous party. The “Glitz and Sass Fashion Show 2016” showcases local boutiques and fashion forward businesses, combined with a red carpet arrival, cocktails, hos d’oeurves, fashion show and prize drawing of fantastic prizes at the Morris Inn that benefit the local efforts of the AHA. “Lipsync with our Stars” is an event styled around popularized lipsync battles to well known songs. According to the release from the Center for the Homeless, “Local community leaders have accepted the challenge to channel their favorite music artist and show off their lipsync skills to benefit the residents of the Center for the Homeless, the region’s largest residential homeless facility. BLACK FRIDAY SURVIVAL GUIDE
“We are so grateful for our participants!” said Steve Camilleri, Executive Director for the Center. “The proceeds support the 250 men, women and children and Veterans who call the Center home,” the release said. Giving With Love Is What Is Most Important Not everyone is able to attend large events to raise money, and giving change to those raising money in donation jars is also important. Spare change adds up, as we all know from having a swear jar in the house or a piggy bank in a child’s room that goes uncounted for a year or so. Donating the old clothes, winter wear, boots and blankets in good condition to the local thrift shop can help keep others warm this season. Making that phone call to your parents or sibling or distant cousin is important, as the holidays can be a source of stress to those around us that we may miss in the twinkling of the lights. No matter how you choose to give back this holiday season, it will surely brighten someone’s season. Don’t forget to share your warm wishes with those close to you in the community, and sometimes just being neighborly and clearing the extra few feet of sidewalk can make a difference in someone’s day, and if that’s all the extra effort it can take, why not go ahead with it? Spread the cheer!

Her roles as a former deputy prosecuting attorney, an attorney in private practice and as a mother have definitely prepared her for her current role as a magistrate. Kristine is grateful for the opportunity that she has been given and honored to serve the people of Elkhart County.

Assistant Director at Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library
Dena Wargo has spent the majority of her career in various human resources roles in the banking industry. After several years at Valley American Bank, she was offered an opportunity at 1st Source Bank, where she served as Director of Training & Development and Assistant Director of Human Resources. Though she continued to live in Granger, an opportunity as Director of Education with United Federal Credit Union in St. Joseph, MI took Dena out of the local business community for five years. Although she thoroughly enjoyed the world of financial services, she was ready for a change --- not to mention a shorter commute! In 2013, Dena joined the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library as the Human Resources Manager. WOW, talk about a new and interesting world! Two and a half years later, she now serves as Assistant Director, a role in which she is responsible for various departments including human resources, marketing, accounting, finance, information technology, facilities, maintenance and security. Dena is proud of the library services they provide to their taxpayers and those in need. She feels blessed to serve in a role in which she is surrounded by professional colleagues who are making a positive difference in the lives of others every day!
