Interior Motives

ngie Rockenbaugh's first experience with interior design started in high school. She actually signed up for the class because it had a lot of field trips! Little did she know that she would fall in love with interior design and then go on to take an independent study the next year. After Angie’s formal schooling and working in several fields of the industry, she accepted an interior design position with 321 Interiors. This is where she saw firsthand the importance of offering complete design services alongside a unique retail gift shop. The company built a strong clientele, making a name for itself as a quality design service with unique retail products. Then, in 2010, Angie had the opportunity to purchase 321 Interiors. "It seemed like a great fit, and I have always loved working with people to help them accomplish their design goals. It’s not every day you get to walk through someone else’s dream,” said Angie. “It’s an incredible feeling knowing you were part of such an incredible outcome.”

Just in a Day’s Work: What do you love about your job? I love taking something "normal" and creating something amazing. I love working with people and making their ideas became a reality. I also love demolition! What was the best business advice you have received and who gave it? “Helping your mind to know and believe that what you do professionally is good, noble and worthwhile in itself helps to fuel your energies and propel your efforts. If you feel really good about your profession, you sweep others along with you on the waves of your enthusiasm for what you do.” - Rabbi Daniel Lapin

Do you have a professional mentor? How have they helped you succeed? I was fortunate enough to have two mentors. I learned so much over the years by watching them interact with customers/clients. I have learned everything from power shopping at High Point to the everyday business operations. But, I think the most important thing is that Karon believed in me. She has always been there for me when I needed her. I tell people she's the Catholic mother I've always dreamed of!

Do you serve on any charitable organizations' boards or committees? I currently support RETA, Boys and Girls Club of Elkhart as well as United Cancer Services. What is your single best piece of advice for women in business? Be passionate about what you do. Love what you do. Learn from your mistakes and move forward. Don't let the negative influence you and rise above it!

“ Love what you do. Learn from your mistakes and move forward.”

What does “success” mean to you? In business, loving what you do and making a profit at it! In life, being content with what you have. What’s your best secret to “having it all?" By being content with what you have. Being thankful in all things. Keeping life in perspective: God, family and friends. What is your favorite non-work activity or hobby? Classic Car Auctions with my husband, shoe shopping at Nordstrom, running and kick boxing. How do you stay organized? If you asked my team this question they would burst out in laughter! I have tried this concept many times and have decided that it’s overrated! I have my own weird way of being organized.

What is your favorite form of stress relief? Running and kick boxing!

Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Dark chocolate covered almonds! Well, anything with dark chocolate and Starbucks!

Favorite TV Show: Psych and Last Man Standing

Favorite Book: I love the "Mitford" series by Jan Karon.

10 SASSY

Facts About Angie Rockenbaugh:

Favorite Dessert: Anything my mom makes but probably her blueberry pie!

Biggest Pet Peeve: When people are too quick to say "no" instead of looking at the situation as an opportunity to create and overcome any obstacle. When I’m working on a project, I don’t like being told “it can’t be done.” I will figure out a way to make it work!

Favorite Beauty Product: If I was only allowed one item to use in the morning, it would be eye liner. It's a great way to add attitude!

What did you want to be as a kid growing up? A singer! What do you think makes up a Sassy woman? Confidence, talented, well rounded, puts others first, sense of humor, compassionate and loving.

What makes you feel the SASSIEST? When I'm on top of my game and knowing that I have God, my family and friends supporting me in everything I do. Also my Calvin Klein jeans, black t-shirt and flip flops! If you were a shoe, describe what you would be and why? It would be my 4" boots. They just have attitude written all over them!

What was the best business advice you have received and who gave it? My father has always been my biggest inspiration in business. He has taught me that if you work hard, do what you say you will do and take care of your customers, the sky is the limit. Hard work and a good work ethic truly does pay off! Who inspires you professionally? Sherri Hill - She is the top designer in my industry and she has successfully managed her career and a beautiful family. She is also involved in many charity organizations and gives back with her gowns to "Operation That’s My Dress" which provides thousands of new gowns for teenage girls by partnering with the USO to honor children of military families for their sacrifice and courage.

Do you serve on any charitable organizations' boards or committees? I have started an Indiana Chapter of Angel Gown's (Angel Gowns by Ashley Rene's) to provide gowns to area hospitals for families that lost a baby while in the hospital. These gowns are used for burial and final photos. We take wedding gowns we receive through donations and have volunteer seamstresses work together to offer families these precious gowns. There is no better gift that can be given to a grieving family than affirming the importance of the life of their child by offering them this precious gift.

What does “success” mean to you? Success is knowing that you have done everything you can do to succeed. Your word is the most important thing you have, and my clients know that I will always do what I say and take good care of them. To be in a situation now to not only have my own store but to also be able to give back from that store and share my passion with others is incredible. What’s your best secret to “having it all?" Work hard - Put your blood, sweat and tears into something and give it your all. Surround yourself with a good team who shares your vision and passion. You simply cannot have it all without a kick butt team! What is your favorite non-work activity or hobby? Playing with my daughter or my two-pound Chihuahua and reading. How do you stay organized? I have lots of lists and a calendar/agenda with me at all times.

“Hard work and a good work ethic truly does pay off!”

I always had a "fun dream" and then a "real career.” My fun dream was to own my own dress store, but my real career was to become an elementary special education teacher. Biggest Pet Peeve: When people talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. I believe firmly in doing what you say you will do.

Volunteer Recruiter, St. Vincent de Paul Society

D

arlene Sweeney has been blessed to have decades of varied and diverse professional experience. From roller-skating carhop in her teens to her current position as Volunteer Recruiter at Saint Vincent de Paul and everything in between. The in-between has included: • Media Sales Writer for Nader-Lief, Inc., a Chicago advertising company • Import Sales Manager for North America for Westnofa, Inc., a Norwegian Furniture Company • Executive Director of The DMC Network, a hospitality trade association • Darlene has owned two companies: Sweeney Connections, Inc., an association management company and Tahoe Experience, Inc., a destination management company handling meetings and conventions in Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada • Her current position as Volunteer Recruiter for Saint Vincent de Paul is her favorite job and the first time she has been able to combine her professional talents with her faith. Helping others is essential in Darlene’s life. She has been a saxophone player, a tap dancer, a bell ringer and a single mother of three. Considering all that she has done, being a mother has been by far the most rewarding for Darlene.

Just in a Day’s Work: What do you love about your job? Mother Teresa said, "We can do no great things, only small things with great love." My job gives me the opportunity to do just that each and every day. What was the best business advice you have received and who gave it? The best business advice came from my father. When I received my first promotion at my new job, he told me to bank the difference between what I was making and what I would be making, and continue to do that each time I received an increase in salary. If I had listened to him instead of buying a new pair of shoes, I would be a millionaire today! (But I wouldn't have all those sassy shoes!) Do you serve on any charitable organizations' boards or committees? I am the co-founder of "Surviving Hearts" at St. Pius

Darlene

Sweeney Photography: Classic Image Photography Stylist: Maria Gonzalez

X Church. "Surviving Hearts" is a ministry to restore life and joy back into the grieving hearts of widows and widowers through friendship, compassion and understanding. Being a widow myself, I can fully understand how difficult it is to get back to the business of living again once you lose a spouse. We recently celebrated one year in this ministry and it has proven to be a great blessing to all. I also volunteer at my parish, St. Pius X and have been in the Bell Ringers Choir and a Lector for three years in addition to being a member of the Saint Vincent de Paul Conference, delivering food to those who are in need. Do you have a professional mentor? How have they helped you succeed? I would have to say it was my mother. As mother of four children, she had to go back to work when my father contracted crippling rheumatoid arthritis as a relatively young

man. She managed her children, her husband, her home and her job with such grace and ease. It was simply amazing. She worked tirelessly for us all, never complaining about the hand she had been dealt. She taught me that I could do anything and be anything with hard work and a cheerful heart. I think she was sassy and didn't know it. What is your single best piece of advice for women in business? Be true to yourself. Never compromise your values or beliefs for the sake of getting ahead. And never let fear decide your fate or your future. Use your God-given talents and continue to grow along the way. We are all diamonds in the rough and our talents and expertise will shine through at the right moment. Remember, of course women don't work as hard as men, because they get it right the first time!

What does “success” mean to you? Success is believing in not only what you do but yourself as well. It's getting up in the morning and having that "I can't wait to get to work" attitude. Be the best you can be at whatever you do. What’s your best secret to “having it all?" Finding that great balance between work, family, friends and yourself. Being grateful for all God's blessings.

“Never let fear decide your fate or your future.”

What is your favorite non-work activity or hobby? Attending festivals, Christian concerts, musicals and events at the Morris, walking the River Walk and spending time with friends and family.

What did you want to be as a kid growing up?

How do you stay organized? Lists, lists and more lists! And, get it on the calendar right away!

Michiana Brick

ayne Flanagan is the president and majority owner of Michiana Brick, joining her father's 20 year old company. An RN by degree, becoming majority owner and embarking upon an adventure in the brick and block business was a unique learning experience complete with incredible challenges. Under Jayne's leadership, Michiana Brick has grown in the hardscape market while consistently providing impeccable customer service and quality designer products. She enjoys the challenge of watching Michiana Brick grow and takes pride in the finished projects of her customers. In 2013, Michiana Brick Home Center was opened in Granger. This solidified a partnership with Ginger Valley Garden Center as well as gave the public an outdoor shopping arena. Jayne enjoys reaching beyond her comfort zone and building alliances with quality manufacturers, other distributors and contractors. She was responsible for bringing the TechoBloc brand to Indiana, as its first distributor. Her passion for building relationships is as important to her as "turning backyard dreams into realities." Jayne continues to work in the field of nursing as a hospice nurse for Hospice at Home in St. Joseph Michigan. In 2014, her dream of creating a network for area women in construction was realized with Michiana Women in Construction. She serves as Secretary for Women Business Owners of Michiana, is a member of Business Women United Network, Michiana Networking, Granger Professional Networking, St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce, Granger Business Association and St. Pius X Catholic Church & School.

Just in a Day’s Work: How did you choose your line of work? My work chose me, or rather my father did! My dad, Greg Gluchowski, knew I was looking for a business. He gave me the opportunity to buy into Michiana Brick as majority owner and president. As a nurse by degree, I knew nothing about brick or block so I had a tremendous learning curve! I think I have surprised us both at the growth we have had since 2011! Who inspires you professionally? I am a strong supporter of fellow business women! I try to surround myself with women I respect, admire and are supportive of each other. I am inspired daily by the women of MWIC (Michiana Women in Construction) and WBOM (Women Business Owners of Michiana). Supporting each other while

growing our businesses is what it is all about. Each business success for one of us is celebrated by all of us! I am inspired by their achievements, energy and love for each other. I am grateful and blessed to have each and every one of them on my support team! I am also inspired by the men in my life including my dad, my husband and my cousin, Rich! Their work ethics influence mine and continue to make me strive to grow Michiana Brick. What was the best business advice you have received and who gave it? When I had a meltdown about the risk (of my retirement funds) of building the Granger store, my husband hugged me and said, "The worst that could happen is you fail and guess what- that is okay. You can survive failure and be a better person for it. But the important thing is, you have tried!"

I really needed that presentation of reality and am so grateful to have taken the opportunity! What are some of the obstacles (if any) you have faced as a woman in your workplace? As a woman in a male dominated industry, obstacles are just a way of life! I have to prove my knowledge and tenacity in most aspects of day-to-day business! I was one of the few women at brick school. My toolkit includes a continuous updating of my knowledge base in my products, industry standards, desires of my customers and my smile! When armed with these, I can tackle any obstacle! What is your single best piece of advice for women in business? Believe in yourself. Surround yourself with those that believe in YOU. Let their positivity and support guide you when your belief in yourself is faltering. Let the negative people go!

What does “success” mean to you? Success to me is letting my personality shine through all I do and feeling secure in my own skin. Taking pride in the quality of goods and services I provide and having the support of my friends and family while helping others achieve their dreams makes me happy and feel successful. What’s your best secret to “having it all?" Having a great support system in place, my husband, my family, my friends and my fellow women in business who can pick up my slack if needed or catch me when I fall. How do you stay organized? My organization skills are a work in progress! I make a lot of lists, am now using my phone for a calendar and check my email frequently. I tend to juggle a lot and try my best to pull it all together! What is your favorite non-work activity or hobby? Spending time with my family, cooking and entertaining. I love to throw a fun party! What is your favorite form of stress relief? Girl’s night out at Hacienda or Bar Louie!

Owner/ Director,

K

The Front Porch

athy BLUMENTRITT started working as a licensed Social Worker in Minneapolis, MN, where she worked with mothers and children who were at risk with Lutheran Social Services. This inspired her to build an expertise in helping families heal and connect as a Marriage and Family Therapist. As she was in private practice, she prayed for a team of colleagues who were interested in mindfulness and healing relationships. One by one, over three years, the team for The Front Porch arrived and trained under her supervision. The idea of The Front Porch was born out of this team as a place for the community to heal and connect in many ways, it also serves to nurture the therapists so they are healthy and connected as well. The Front Porch family of therapists are open to educating and delivering new and ancient ways of healing. Some of these healing arts include family therapy, marital conflict workshops, sand tray, poetry readings, individual therapy, mindful meditation and art to express the inner world. The Front Porch hopes to be the leading team that listens and responds to the Michiana people's stories and needs and who hope within each story. We feel blessed and want to share our home with those who are in need of connection and healing.

Just in a Day’s Work: What do you love about your job? The people and their beautiful real stories. I get the chance to hear and be with amazing people in ways even their families do not always get to see and hear. When I watch people heal or connect, sometimes for the first time, it changes me too. I also love to watch my staff grow into genuine healing therapists. I hope to inspire success and nurture their mistakes. Mistakes are essential, they are unique teachers who can transform good to great. What was the best business advice you have received and who gave it? Listen, listen slowly and intentionally to what lives and speaks to your heart and mind. We rarely if ever do great things alone, take help and work until it's done right. My parents Tony and Terry Marchettit, and a bit of Walt Disney.

Kathy

Blumentritt Photography: Classic Image Photography Stylist: Maria Gonzalez

Who inspires you professionally? My family, they are all creatively driven. They do not quit! I watch them all get up time and again after challenges and become even better. Our strength comes from God, yet we all value hard work and getting it done well. Finally, my husband and his unique undying belief in what I do. He was the first to say, "Do it Kathy" every step in my career from my degrees to The Front Porch. Do you have a professional mentor? How have they helped you succeed? YES! I could not be me without Tim Nelson, PhD and Bonnie Badenoch, PhD. I have this perfect combination of mentors for me. Tim taught me to never stop reading and challenging what I am doing and why I chose a method or a theory. Bonnie has taught me what books cannot even though she is an author. She has taught me about how deep and unknown the unconscious is to swim in. She taught me to follow people's natural instinct to

heal and connect. They both have taught me genuine vulnerability. They have taught me in their own ways, that it is necessary for therapists to go towards our own inner wounds and beautiful wisdom that comes with the walk of healing. Suffering is inevitable, normal and it can bring a deeper trust of self when we listen to what we need. I've learned from God and many others that people usually do things that makes sense to them, we have to be willing to ask questions and truly listen. What is your single best piece of advice for women in business? Stay focused on the goal and connected to those who you trust. Failure does not mean the dream is over, it means another door is going to open. Be thankful, I owe so much to others who have given me their time, money, encouragement, creative work, hugs, patience, and most of all, belief in what we are doing.

What does “success” mean to you? Success means I have listened well to God, my loved ones and myself. Whatever comes from listening is usually something beautiful. What’s your best secret to “having it all?" I'm not sure you can have it all in any one given time or moment but I know I've come close to feeling connected to God and those I love. Earth is not the final place, but I have touched times and people that remind me of what is yet to come. What is your favorite non-work activity or hobby? I'm learning to quilt. It teaches me stillness and reminds me of life. I love watching separate things come together to make something beautifully new.

What is your favorite form of stress relief? Running! It allows me to listen to music and shed stress. I also enjoy laughter, jokes and funny movies. They remind me that life's frustrations can be humorous. And of course, mindful meditations and yoga.

“Stay focused on the goal and connected to those who you trust. ”

Favorite TV Show: Once Upon A Time

Favorite Guilty Pleasure:

Tennis! I could spend every day playing tennis with my friends and family. I have met amazing women who have inspired me and loved me when I'm not lovable. I love them and the game. I feel guilty only because I've played up to three to four hours in a row, and the guilt comes when I've got to get to work at home and at TFP. There will always be more laundry and more tennis, thankfully.

Broadcaster/D.J., FM-LeSea Broadcasting

K

imberly ANN BOND'S love affair with radio started long ago. As a little girl, she would record hours of live radio on cassettes and would memorize everything that was said, sung or written in the commercials. Kimberly’s first radio job was at WAMJ-AM in Mishawaka where she worked there for a year and then applied at the number one Top 40 secular station in Mishawaka called, Zip 104-FM. While working at Zip 104-FM, someone from LeSea Broadcasting heard her on the radio and offered her a job the next day. Kimberly has worked for LeSea Broadcasting and Positive Hit Music, Pulse FM Radio for 25 years now! LeSea is the home of many amazing ministries. Radio (2 FM stations, 3 frequencies and 6 Shortwave Stations that cover the entire world), 6 Full Power Television Stations-2 National & 1 International, Feed The Hungry, Worldwide Bible Distribution, Making Healthy Choices, LeSea Tours and a 24 hour International Prayerline. Touching, helping and encouraging people on a daily basis!

Just in a Day’s Work: What do you love about your job? The intimate connection and companionship of being a listener’s closest friend, biggest cheerleader, most consistent motivator and story-teller. The minute-by-minute opportunity to input into people’s lives is wonderful! It changes their whole outlook, heart and day! We give them the energy and ability to keep doing what THEY do on a daily basis with us by their side encouraging them forward! I love that I can provide the chance to change lives and the ability to reach out and squeeze a heart of discouragement back to life. I love the outreach, the ministry and the love. It’s fun, amazing and ultimately life-changing. There is nothing else like radio in this world! What is the best business advice you have received and who gave it? The best radio advice I ever received was back in 1986 from my first program director, "Be uniquely you. Develop your OWN voice. Don’t try to be, sound like or emulate ANY one else." I ran with that! I developed the belief and wisdom that each of us is one-of-a-kind and part of a greater 'body' of people. Together we make up a powerful, strong, functioning whole. But, we won’t and don’t as long as "eyes

that instead want to be ears or legs that instead want to be lungs refuse to walk in their own beautiful assignment, gifting’s, strengths and callings. There is nothing more valuable than you.” And that goes for business success, family relationships, empowering friendships, artistic contributions, social interaction and causes and ministry on every level. What are some of the obstacles you have faced as a woman in your workplace? I believe that being a single mom is a challenge no matter what job or career you hold. I have a special place in my heart for women who are both the mother and the father to their children. Those who go home after a long work day become the cook, launderer, maintenance person, bill payer, cleaner, organizer, school function attender, cheerleader, supporter, child-raiser, protector, provider and a million other things that all single moms can relate to. Do you serve on any charitable organizations' boards or committees? I am a voice of healing and freedom for those who are experiencing domestic violence or are trying to find help and healing from abuse that has occurred

in their childhood, marriage or relationships. Many places ask me to come and speak. I’ve spoken at churches, fellowships, support groups and correctional facilities. At LeSea Broadcasting, I have the daily opportunity to serve and help raise money to feed hungry children with our own 'Feed the Hungry,’ and send the word of God with 'Spread the Word.' We work yearly with other organizations that come to us asking for assistance with feeding programs, ministry and various other projects that bring help and relief to those hungry, sick or less fortunate all around the world. What is your single best piece of advice for women in business? Love being the unique and amazing one-of-akind woman that God created you to be. Be that bold, talented, intelligent, incredible, overcoming, conscientious woman who truly values and believes in herself. Pursue your dreams while inspiring others to do the same by your tenacity, faith, encouragement and ethics. You have your own unique light. LET IT SHINE. Don’t allow issues, troubles, challenges or negativity dull that, EVER!

Just in a Day’s Work: How did you choose your line of work? At a very young age, I did a report on Abraham Lincoln and how he became a lawyer and the work he did for his clients. It completely memorized me. He was highly respected for the help he was able to give to his clients. From that time forward I wanted to be a lawyer to help those in my community work through difficult legal issues. What is the best business advice you have received? Executive Director

eigh Ann Jacobson joined Ivy Tech Community College’s North Central region as the Executive Director of Resource Development on June 23rd of this year. She is responsible for developing and sustaining fundraising efforts in Ivy Tech North Central’s four-county area. She cultivates partnerships with community groups, employers, foundations and individuals in support of the College's students, faculty and programs. Leigh Ann graduated from King’s College with a B.A. in English and from Arcadia University with an M.A. in English. She earned a Certificate in Executive Management from the University of Notre Dame and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE). Leigh Ann joined Ivy Tech with 16 years of fundraising experience. She is involved in several organizations in her field, is a speaker on fundraising topics and she is currently a member and past board member of Association of Fundraising Professionals. Leigh Ann and her family moved to Indiana eight years ago when her husband Ben accepted a position with the University of Notre Dame. Leigh Ann and Ben have three children and reside in Granger.

Just in a Day’s Work: What do you love about your job? I love my profession because I build relationships, share my enthusiasm for the cause and impact the resources available to a non-profit. Plus, fund development is an area where I apply a variety of competencies in different ways. For example, strong writing skills are integral for writing successful proposals and communicating effectively with donors. Exceptional interpersonal skills are necessary for focusing on identifying and nurturing donor relationships. Project management skills are needed to focus on the logistics of planning special events. What best business advice have you received and who gave it? My high school guidance counselor offered me advice that has remained with me ever since. He emboldened me to get out there and volunteer as a way to learn skills and try on different industries. He instilled in me that being able to show that you are a passionate learner and that you can

Leigh Ann

transfer learning into another role is an effective method to demonstrate to your prospective college or future employer that you’re ready for the next opportunity. As an experienced professional, I still follow his advice. Volunteering opportunities continue to expand my knowledge, skills, professional capacity and, most importantly, my personal network. What are some of the obstacles (if any) you have faced as a woman in your workplace? Professional fundraising was once exclusively an "old boys" network. It has come to include a larger and larger proportion of women—women who are becoming more prominent both as fundraisers and as donors. Yet today, disparities exist in recognizing women's philanthropy and their volunteer spirit. As a woman, I continue to wield my power through my own support of women’s funds, women candidates and women’s human services. I look for ways in my own work to maximize women's philanthropy and their joy of giving.

Who inspires you professionally? Both the students and the donors inspire me on a daily basis! Sharing a student success story with a potential funder inspires me to make sure that program or scholarship is sustained. Being part of an individual's decision to invest in changing someone's life or bettering their community is awe-inspiring. I've been blessed by having relationships with philanthropy heroes who inspire me and others. Do you have a professional mentor? How have they helped you succeed? Yes, I have a professional mentor, who I sometimes refer to as my life coach. I met this woman when I first moved to Indiana eight years ago. She served as a board member at the non-profit agency at which I was working. Ever since that time, she and I meet regularly to discuss shop and share stories about our families. She is a great asset in my life, because she keeps me on task with my goal of earning my doctorate by the time I reach 50.

What’s your best secret to “having it all?” My best secret to "having it all" is while you're working on attaining it, sometimes you just need to pause and enjoy the small things as you get there. If you keep yourself in constant pursuit mode, you cannot appreciate where you are now. What is your favorite non-work activity or hobby? I really don't time for a hobby, but my favorite non-work activity is planning our next vacation which, with me, can start 365 days before it's begun! I love researching destinations, reading reviews, planning activities and finding restaurants, etc. How do you stay organized? I text my husband and trust in my assistant! My husband has the knack to never forget something on a list, so I just text away any needs on the home-front. At the office, I rely on my assistant to help keep me organized so that I do not have to spend unnecessary time in the office when my goals are met by being out of the office. Define what “success” means to you? Success means happiness to me. Success at work stems around me being happy with my achievements. Success at home revolves around having a happy marriage and happy children. Staying happy in trying to balance it all is a true success!

What is your favorite form of stress relief? My favorite form of stress relief involves a hot bubble bath and streaming Sade while I soak all the troubles away.

“Being part of an individual's decision to invest in changing someone's life or bettering their community is awe-inspiring. ”

Guilty Pleasure: My guilty pleasure usually involves having some icecream or a few mini peanut butter cups while Pinteresting before bed usually looking at pins on ways to eat healthier! Favorite TV show: Showtime's "House of Lies" is my current favorite tv series because it is the perfect blend of comedy and drama and the female leads are SASSY indeed! All of the characters have some devilish aspects as well which makes watching the show a great diversion. Favorite Book: The writing in "The Mermaid Chair" by Sue Monk Kidd is beautiful, spiritual, mysterious, and erotic. The love story exists on so many levels - the woman and the monk, the woman and her husband and the woman and her own soul. I couldn't put it down and it's my go-to re-read, even if it's just for a passage.

Facts

About Leigh Ann Jacobson:

Favorite Scented Candle: Clean Linen scent draws an emotional response from me because it's reminiscent of the clean sheets my grandmother hung out on the clothesline. Being tucked in at my gram's house as a child and the smell of those sheets brings back the fondest memories and feeling of security.

What did you want to be as a kid growing up? One of my earliest recollections is when I was just beginning elementary school. I loved going to my mother's office on days off from school, because I was able to spend time riding the elevator with Luther. Everyone knew Luther—he was the iconic elevator operator in my mother's building. Luther always greeted everyone by name, with a smile, and supplied a dose of daily humor. I remember thinking how lucky Luther must be because he brightened everyone's day and exchanged in stories during their ride. I thought back then that I would make the perfect elevator operator!

Favorite Beauty Product: Lip gloss is by far my favorite beauty product. No matter where I'm going nor what time of day, I'm never without lip gloss. It's an effortless way to add some sparkle.

What’s your go-to and in-office beauty style? My go-to style for the office is a classic suit or separates that are layered. It's in the accessories where my personality comes out! I love scarfs, statement necklaces, being equipped with a great portfolio and pen and, of course, perfume.

Biggest Pet Peeve: My biggest pet peeve is when someone does not extend mutual courtesy back to you. For example, when you hold the door open for someone and they don't say thank you. Therefore, I make it a point to extend thoughtfulness and appreciation in many of my actions throughout every day.

What makes you feel the SASSIEST? I have a SASSY, unstoppable attitude. I'm quick witted, bold, clever and a little feisty. I channel by SASSY-ness at work by being determined, confident and vocal. Outside of work, I summon my SASSY-ness by being playful and vivacious.

If you were a shoe, describe what you would be and why? I would be the high heeled loafer. The loafer has remained a staple in a woman's wardrobe for decades yet keeps reinventing itself and finding new ways to be beautiful. A high quality, high heeled loafer to me is sassier than any stiletto--it's a good girl with a hint of naughty.

As a clinical consultant for leading contact lens manufacturers, her patients have early access to new, improved lens products before they become widely available. In 2003, this sassy doctor was appointed by Governor Kearnen to serve a term on the Indiana Optometry Board, advising the state on professional licensing standards and eye care legislation. In 2010-11, she represented 760 optometrists when she was elected president of the Indiana Optometric Association. She volunteers her professional services through free vision screenings to area school children, and is a spokesperson for InfantSEE, a non-profit organization that offers free infant eye assessments for early detection of vision disorders.

Just Just in in a a Day’s Day’s Work: Work: What do you love about your job? Great vision and eye health are essential for overall well-being and quality of life, so I love that what I do is important. I also genuinely enjoy getting to know my patients so I can offer them a personalized eye care experience. Recently a patient posted an online review that said “Going to Dr. Robbins feels like family to me.” That’s the kind of doctor care I am most proud of, and why I love my job. How did you choose your line of work? I knew I wanted to do something in the healthcare field, but was uncertain of the specialty. My adviser told me it was difficult to be admitted into optometry school. That was enough to motivate me to pursue it!

What was the best business advice you have received and who gave it? BALANCE your life and you will find happiness! I cannot recall who gave it but I remember it well! What are some of the obstacles (if any) you have faced as a woman in your workplace? Early in my career, there was the issue of equal pay for men and women in the same position. But since joining Eye Care Associates of Michiana in 1999, the obstacles have not been there. From the beginning, I was fully embraced as an equal by my partners Dr. Tom Morton and Dr. John Offerle. What is your single best piece of advice for women in business? Go for it! Don't ever think something is out of reach.

I also love the flexibility that comes with being able to set your own schedule and be your own boss. What was the best business advice you have received and who gave it? Recently, I received great advice at a T.D. Jakes seminar. He said, "At the end of the day, there will always be things that aren't checked off your list. Just make sure it isn't the same thing every day." Who inspires you professionally? There is another martial arts business owner in Arizona that blows me away. She's strong, independent and tenacious! At one time, she almost lost everything,

but dug deep and worked her way to success. She's "real" with you too. She's not afraid to be vulnerable and tell you her downfalls or weaknesses. She genuinely wants to help and doesn't care about getting the credit or recognition. She works away on making herself and her business the best it can be, minding her own business, not worrying about keeping up with the Jones. And, she's under 5 foot and crazy fit as an added bonus! What is your single best piece of advice for women in business? Just be you! Know and celebrate how you are uniquely made. Always work on making a better you, but don't try to become successful by being someone you aren't or who you think others want.

Do you serve on any charitable organizations' boards or committees? I'm not on any boards or committees, but we regularly have fundraisers and promotions for charities through food drives, school supply drives, toy drives, board break and kick-a-thons and pink uniform promotions. We also have a community project every other month with our leadership students from leaf raking and snow shoveling to retirement home demonstrations and food pantry volunteering. Do you have a professional mentor? How have they helped you succeed? My mom! She's my martial arts instructor, my mom, my business mentor, my friend and my cheerleader. Everything I know about the industry comes from her. She has poured into me more than I probably even realize.

What does “success” mean to you? Figuring out and doing what God made and put you on this earth for and doing it to the best of your ability and with love. What’s your best secret to “having it all?" Knowing that what you have is probably already close to "having it all." But if you don't feel like you don't have it all, go do something about it! What is your favorite non-work activity or hobby? My husband and I enjoy traveling and doing extreme things like skydiving, tough mudder and swimming with sharks. He's currently training for a marathon and I'm training for my first triathlon. How do you stay organized? Google Tasks, Google Calendar and LOTS of lists!

Just in a Day’s Work: What do you love about your job? When someone uses a mug I designed every morning for their cup of morning coffee and tells me it's their favorite mug, someone has me create a piece of jewelry for a special occasion or a special someone, or someone has me fashion a bowl for their daughter’s wedding. I am reminded that what I am saying with my hands in the creating process is being kept by someone or passed on as a gift of love. I love being a maker of things that tell a story to someone. A maker of things that are just meant to make someone feel happy. I get to do that each and every day.

T

ieal Bishop was part of a small group of professionals who came together in 2003 whose mission was to empower families of children who are medically fragile. She was not only one of those minds but became the driving force to see this dream accomplished. Representing parents of medically fragile children was only one major characteristic that made Tieal so successful! Her passion and drive harnessed enough support to make that dream a reality – to dream, build and open the first free standing specialty hospital in Indiana designed for the growing number families of children who are medically fragile. A Rosie Place opened its doors in 2011, inviting these children to come and stay overnight for short periods of time, thus allowing their parents the precious gift of time in hopes of improving their quality of life and other relationships outside the constant demands of caring for such special children. Tieal knows firsthand the challenges these parents face and has sought to become the voice that represents the over 2,000 families in our Michiana area.

Just in a Day’s Work: What do you love about your job? I see it as a privilege and I never lose sight of that. I wake up every morning feeling honored to be engaging with the most generous people of our community and wonder what new adventure will I get to participate in next. What was your first job? At 15, I started working in a fish market in Delray Beach, Florida. Slinging, filleting and hauling 100 pound crates of fish instills a certain work ethic - despite the smell at the end of the day.

What does a typical workday look like for you? No day is typical - priority is precedent. As a single mom of three spirited children, I start and end my day with them. In between, my hair is a mess from changing so many hats! From addressing daily operational questions, talking with families about life's challenges, taking intentional steps to execute the vision of our strategic plan, grant writing and development, event planning and building relationships with volunteers and donors all while running a hospital!

When I first started this career, I asked a 72-year-old successful business man and philanthropist, "From your years of experience, what do I need to know today at 30 that you know now at 72?” With a sincere look in his eye he said, "I would have spent more days loving on my family then loving my career."
