===================================================================== GOLF DIGEST RANKINGS AFFECTED BY LOW NUMBER OF COURSE OPENING ===================================================================== "No point in producing top-10 lists like Best New Public and Best New Private when only 24 new courses opened in the last half of 2009, and just 18 more opened in 2010, plus a smattering of international nominees. So our 950 Course Ranking panelists focused on Best in State and America's 100 Greatest candidates while I covered the entire new-course field (except for two places where the gates were padlocked at the time I reached them). It was tiresome travel but an invigorating assignment. Unshackled from the obligations of objectivity, I really got to be a critic for a change, expressing rather than suppressing my likes and dislikes on the basis of ever-shifting whims. But I didn't let a good score dissuade my conclusion that a design was dumb, or allow a bad round to spoil my admiration for a course well done. LIGHTNING ROD OF THE YEAR The Golf Club at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Mich., is a great story. The Jack Nicklaus-designed resort course was created in run-down areas just off downtown, assembled from parcels that included abandoned warehouses, an old chemical plant, a city park and a dump. From the eighth tee (one of three holes positioned on a stretch of Lake Michigan dunes previously part of Jean Klock Park), the view to the south is reminiscent of Lahinch in Ireland. Yet when Nicklaus opened his design, there were picketers out front. Opponents were outraged that a 90-year-old lakefront park would be turned over to private developers. Proponents argued the park was an eyesore and drug hangout. The seventh through ninth holes occupy much of the 90-acre park, on the inland side of the dunes, and the public still has access to its lake-shore portion. (Emotions will likely be exacerbated when the three dunes holes serve as the closing holes for the 2012 and 2014 Senior PGA Championships scheduled for Harbor Shores.) Oh, yeah, maybe it's because our favorite overachiever was infamously busy during his slump. He left the voice mail heard 'round the Net, stonewalled the cops, seemed to drop off the face of the earth, came back, got dumped by his swing coach, got divorced and finally hooked up with another swing coach. Somehow, in the midst of all that turmoil, Woods showed glimpses of his new swing in full flower, but found no consistency until he lost to Graeme McDowell in a one-hole playoff at the Chevron World Challenge, a glorified exhibition, in December. He hit some scratchy shots, but Woods was good enough over 73 holes to prompt Steve Williams, his caddie, to tell the Associated Press, "I'm pretty confident when the new year starts that Tiger will be fully ingrained with this new swing." He's not the only one. The press will reveal 'Tiger's new gal pal' ... at least once a month. One of the "bombshell pix" will turn out to be a really fuzzy picture of Kultida. The press will go back to zinging Colin Montgomerie I'll start. Winning Ryder captains deserve their hosannas, and you had to love Monty's glib turns behind the microphone, but his self-congratulation has become unintentionally hilarious. In December, the great Scot told a gathering that before the start of play he secretly had Team Europe's five-foot beds taken out of their hotel rooms and replaced with six-foot beds. Um, okay, but what's that got to do with the price of tea in China? Me, I chalk up Europe's half-point win to brave Monty's prescient choice of team-bathroom urinal cakes. Have you any idea when it could re-open? All the best Peter Purawec Peter, I have no clue. Traverse City got overbuilt with golf courses during the 1980-90's boom and many are suffering. I think a lot of people are watching to see what happens with LochenHeath GC about four miles from High Pointe. LochenHeath had been basically shut down for a couple of years, but did have a small maintenance budget. Still the course was in rough shape and will take some time to bring it back. http://michigangolfer.tv/2010shows/lochenheath/

High Pointe has had little maintenance since it closed down and will most likely take a longer time to bring it back. However, these golf courses keep dropping in price and people will when they find a price that will work. LochenHeath was purchased for a pittance from what it originally cost.. Below, is the release from the Traverse City Record Eagle on High Pointe. Also, a list of courses that have closed in the past decade. High Pointe Golf Club is one of several in area to close in recent years BY BILL O'BRIEN ACME -- Golfers will find fewer options when they hit the links this spring amid tough economic times in northern Michigan. High Pointe Golf Club, an 18-hole layout along M-72 in Acme Township, won't open for the 2009 golf season. A posting on High Pointe's Web site said the move is "due to difficult economic times in the country, especially Michigan ... ." Course owner Don Hayden was not immediately available for comment, but a company employee confirmed the closure Friday. The course was among the early designs of now world-renown golf course architect Tom Doak, of Traverse City, whose notable courses include Pacific Dunes in Oregon and Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand. High Pointe is the latest casualty among several courses in the Grand Traverse region. Courses that closed in recent years include the private Lochenheath golf club north of Acme, and public tracts Mitchell Creek and Cedar Hills near Traverse City, as well as Veronica Valley and Matheson Greens in Leelanau County. http://record-eagle.com/acme/x75069624/Golf-course-is-latest-victim-of-economy

Tiger Woods returns Unthinkable that his personal life collapse was, even more so was the thought of him not playing in 2010. When he chose to return in April, CBS, NBC, and Camp Ponte Vedra breathed a sigh of relief. 2. Woods’ game crumbles Perhaps there were times he wishes he did take the year off. Inconsistent, choppy, wavering on a swing change . . . it led to his first-ever winless season and a fall from No. 1. 3. Lee Westwood takes penthouse Without a major on his resume or a European Tour win in 2010, the witty, ball-striking machine from England uses remarkable consistency to assume the top spot in the world rankings. 4. Phil Mickelson wins third Masters The Augusta focus had been on how one family had fallen apart. But on Sunday, in front of cancerstricken wife Amy, Mickelson pulls together an unforgettable family portrait. 5. Europeans rush forth Major wins by Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer and yet another Ryder Cup victory had them gushing across the pond; so, too, did having seven of the top 11 players in the world rankings. 6. Dustin Johnson emerges (almost) Billed as a source of immense power, Johnson nearly wins two majors, only to stumble in U.S. Open rough at Pebble Beach and a controversial bunker at Whistling Straits. 7. Going low Three weeks after Paul Goydos opens the John Deere Classic with a 59, Stuart Appleby closes the Greenbrier Classic with that same score, only his heroics enable him to overtake Jeff Overton and win. 8. Business picks up Having stayed the course in 2008-09, tour officials sign on sponsorship deals with Farmers Insurance, Waste Management, Wells Fargo, Hyundai, and Cadillac to paint a brighter economic picture. 9. Jim Furyk scales Mt. Burke, one of the game’s great characters and one the game’s greatest statesmen, was honored with the William D. Richardson Award, given annually to recognize individuals who have consistently made an outstanding contribution to golf. Douglas, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2009, won the Ben Hogan Award for remaining active in golf despite a physical handicap or serious illness. Stricker, a nine-time winner on the PGA Tour, was honored with the ASAPSports/Jim Murray Award, which recognizes a golfer for cooperation, quotability and accommodation with the media. They will be honored, along with GWAA Players of the Year Graeme McDowell, Yani Tseng and Bernhard Langer at the Annual GWAA Awards Dinner, April 6 in Augusta, Ga. Burke, who turns 88 later this month, has been a passionate supporter of the game as a player, teacher and champion of the amateur game. He and the late Jimmy Demaret founded Champions Golf Club – a golf-only club – and it went on to host a U.S. Open, Ryder Cup, U.S. Amateur and five TOUR Championships. Burke was awarded the PGA of America’s Distinguished Service Award in 2007. Burke, a runner-up for the Richardson in 2010, edged Atlanta philanthropist Tom Cousins. Douglas, who has served on the USGA women’s committee since 1993, traveled and officiated events, including the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open, despite undergoing chemotherapy treatments. As a player, she competed in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links, and she has been involved with the Arizona Golf Association, Arizona Junior Golf Association and Executive Women’s Golf Association. She beat Champions Tour player Bill Glasson and PGA Tour player Heath Slocum for the award. Stricker, ranked seventh in the world, is one of the Tour’s most accessible players. He has been open and honest about his career during the tough years and the good ones. He beat Stewart Cink and Tom Lehman for the award. Past recipients of the Richardson Award, named for The New York Times’ William D. Richardson who was instrumental in the founding of the GWAA in 1946, include the Harmon Family, Furman Bisher, Pete Dye, Louise Suggs, Judy Rankin, Nancy Lopez, Sandy Tatum, Dan Jenkins, Judy Bell, Babe Zaharias, Jack Nicklaus, Ely Callaway, Ben Hogan, Pres. Dwight Eisenhower, Patty Berg, Gene Sarazen, Arnold Palmer, Ben Crenshaw, Harvey Penick, Peggy Kirk Bell, Frank Hannigan, Kathy Whitworth and Lee Trevino. ================================================================================= CANDLESTONE HIRES CRAIG CREBESSA AND MARTY CARMICHAEL TO CONTINUE ITS UPWARD TREND ================================================================================= Art, Hope you had a great holiday. As you know we lost Mike Husby to a project up north. While we will miss his smiling face, we are continuing to move forward. We have completed all of our remodel work on the facility and course (except paved cart paths in 2011). We have separated the GM and Golf Professional positions and retained Craig Crebessa as GM and Marty Carmichael is in charge as Golf Professional. Craig is local to our market and his focus for the winter is continuing to build business volume in both dining and hotel stays all winter, and have already exceeded 2010 pre bookings for the upcoming 2011 season. Not sure if you know Marty. He is a PGA pro, with experience as Golf Professional and GM at Quail Ridge just a few years ago. He is local to our area, with a great reputation and we are really pleased to have him on staff.
