Well, as we all know, increased auto sales should lead to increased golf rounds and it is important to support Michigan's auto business comeback. The auto show, which runs through the weekend is absolutely spectacular in its presentation. As our industry prepares for its annual rollout of vendors and booths, I must admit that the booths at the auto show are just.... well just watch as we bring you the sights of the auto show with the sounds of our GLSP musical director, Jamie Fallon. Enjoy the show and we hope you will go. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Efat-cIiy0s ================================================================================= A SEASON TO REMEMBER: CALVIN COLLEGE KNIGHTS CAPTURE 2010 MIAA CHAMPIONSHIP: By Chris Lewis ================================================================================= For more than 50 years, the Calvin College Knights have participated in hundreds of MIAA (Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) tournaments throughout the Great Lakes State. During that time period, dozens of Calvin’s men’s golf teams have tirelessly competed with a common goal in mind – to eventually capture the coveted MIAA Championship. Through the years, the Knights have overcome numerous close calls and heartbreaks within the MIAA conference. Although the Knights consistently performed well in the conference and attained many second place finishes, no team was ever able to achieve ultimate glory – that is until this past October. This season, the college’s golf program was finally rewarded for the perseverance that it has displayed, as the 2010-2011 Knights obtained the very first MIAA championship title in team history. P. 2

Led by Coach Brian Bolt, a 1990 graduate of Calvin, the Knights finished the season with a stroke average of 301.4, which was just low enough to defeat Trine University, located in Angola, Indiana, by a mere two strokes. Undoubtedly, the 2010 MIAA season was quite a nail biter for all teams involved, especially for Calvin and Trine. A Comeback for the Ages Annually, the MIAA conference competes in eight separate jamborees that are each hosted by the conference’s collegiate members. Although the Knights had captured two of the first seven jamborees prior to competing in the season’s final jamboree at Pine River Country Club, Alma College’s home course, the team still trailed Trine University by a staggering nineteen strokes. Yet, the Knights did not quit. In fact, the team was even more motivated to defeat their conference rivals and claim their place within Calvin’s athletic history. With a team score of 296, the Knights won the final jamboree of the season and ended a MIAA championship winless streak that had begun shortly after the conclusion of World War II. “I still remember the entire jamboree as if it only happened yesterday,” Bolt said. “It was a windy day and Pine River Country Club was playing especially difficult. However, although the team had a slow start, everyone stayed focused on the task at hand.” Throughout the tournament, various members of the team fully utilized their talents in order to create magical moments on the golf course. During the jamboree, David Veen (’14) claimed medalist honors with a superb round of 71 amidst harsh weather conditions. At the same time, Eric Doezema (’11), a mainstay for the Knights in the last four years, holed out on the thirteenth hole for the first ace of his golfing career. This high-odds shot further improved the team’s confidence level for the rest of the match. The momentum truly began to build. Jess Hendriksma (’11) started his round five-over-par after only five holes, but he was able to manage a very respectable final score of five-over-par 77, while sophomores Dave Sarkipato and Ben Kuiper finished with scores of 75 and 81, respectively. At the end of the day, the Knights had claimed one of the greatest comebacks in the history of MIAA golf. Individual High Performers Form a Triumphant Team Unit As Coach Bolt reflects on the historical season, he cannot help but to remember each of the individuals who strived to accomplish their dreams this past year through a fiery passion for the game of golf, as well as a relentless level of competitiveness and a desire to leave an indelible imprint on the college’s athletic history. “Prior to the beginning of the season, the team set a goal – to win three MIAA jamborees. By establishing a core team unit, we were able to do just that,” Bolt said. Even though Coach Bolt’s senior team members, Jess Hendriksma and Eric Doezema, will be preparing for their future careers within the workforce next season, they will proudly remember the ways in which they contributed to their college’s golfing success each and every year that they attended Calvin. “This year, Jess was the second best golfer in the MIAA with a scoring average of 74.5, which ranks as the second best average in the history of Calvin’s golfing program,” Bolt said. “As he played in every single match from his freshman year to his senior year, he is most responsible for leading the program from ‘the middle of the pack’ to the top of the league. I am very proud of his work ethic, growth, and leadership.” In the meantime, Doezema played outstanding golf throughout his collegiate career as well. “Eric was actually more consistent than Jess when they both began playing for Calvin four years ago, but he struggled to play consistently well during his sophomore and junior years,” Bolt said. “Eric came back this year ready for success though and I am most pleased with his improved play throughout the course of the season. When the pressure was the greatest and the team needed him the most, he responded with scores of 74, 71, and 73 during the final three rounds of his Calvin career.” Doezema’s consistency certainly paid dividends this fall as his seasonal scoring average was 75.9 – the third best seasonal average in Calvin history. In addition, he earned Second Team All-MIAA honors, while Hendriksma was awarded First Team All-MIAA honors. Coach Brian Bolt Prepares for Continued Success Although Coach Bolt will lose two of his most talented and consistent golfers next season, he is still anticipating a strong 2011-2012 campaign from the upcoming members of his team. “Three of the team’s strongest performers will be prepared to successfully defend the MIAA championship next year. Calvin also has an impressive list of other freshmen and sophomores who may join the team next year,” Bolt said. “Of course, I am always searching for quality student athletes to join the team, so there may be some freshmen who challenge the veterans next year.” Also, Bolt is preparing his current squad for next May’s NCAA Division III Nationals tournament, which will be held in Greensboro, North Carolina. “The squad is currently working hard in preparation for that experience – an event that is bound to be a memorable event for everyone involved,” said Bolt. “Also, it is important to remember that four different golfers earned medalist honors in four separate league tournaments this year. This fact alone shows the depth and potential that the team has as it approaches the Nationals tournament.” This past season, the Calvin Knights attained the very first MIAA championship in team history. But, what will the squad do for an encore? Only time will tell. For more information about Calvin College, as well as its wide selection of athletic programs, please visit http://www.calvin.edu/. During the coming months, the “Collegiate Spotlights” series will profile each one of Michigan’s fouryear colleges or universities that provide golf programs to male students. ================================================ TODD ANDERSON INTERVIEW - PART II By Terry Moore ================================================ Todd Anderson, Grand Rapids native and the Director of Instruction at Sea Island GC in Georgia, is the 2010 PGA National Teacher of the Year. Receiving that prestigious honor later this month in Orlando, Anderson will also be the headliner at the 23rd annual West Michigan Golf Show on Feb. 11-13 at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids. Recently, he spoke by phone with Show publicist and golf writer Terry Moore with whom he discussed his golf background and teaching insights. *Editor's Note: This is Part II of the interview. For those that missed Part I, it follows later in the newsletter. Q. And what can average golfers learn about course management from Tour players? A. One of the amazing things about successful Tour players is how they’re able to score low often in spite of not hitting it that well. They know how to manage their emotions when not hitting it well and still get the ball into the hole. And much of this is due to a rock-solid short game. Yes, they may miss greens but they manage to get it up and down and save par time after time. They don’t make big numbers. Q. And the difference between top amateurs and top pros? A. They both hit a similar number of quality shots but it’s the quality of their misses that is the key difference. And the other big difference is the quality of the short game. When good amateurs get to within one hundred yards of the flag, they may hit a wedge to six or eight feet whereas Tour players regularly dial it in to within three feet. And the difference between making a three-footer compared to an eightfooter is huge. Q. Talk about your mentors beyond the ones you listened to during the Golf Digest Schools. A. I must thank Lynn Janson who gave me my first assistant’s job at Green Ridge. I also worked under Scott Davenport and Hank Johnson at the Golf Digest Schools. And of course, I want to thank Jack Lumpkin, the longtime head instructor at Sea Island, for being so helpful and encouraging. Q. What instructional books have influenced you? A. I think highly of Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book. It says a lot about the game other than just swing fundamentals. I also like How to Become A Complete Golfer by Bob Toski and Jim Flick. Of course, Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons is a classic but so is the under-rated Golf Fundamentals by Seymour Dunn. Written in 1922, it offers timeless advice. And I think Bob Rotella’s Golf is Not a Game of Perfect is a terrific mental book. Q. Talk about parents wanting their children to be golfers. A. The one thing that’s apparent today is that there is more pressure on kids playing sports and golf now than ever before. I work with a number of elite junior golfers and notice how much pressure they put on themselves in addition to that put on them by some overzealous parents. I like to see parents teach their sons and daughters the rules and etiquette and traditions of the game. Kids need to respect the rules and etiquette of the game and parents should instill and reinforce that learning. In terms of playing, I recommend parents make sure the time with their children on the course is fun and enjoyable. Sometimes, it’s better to quit playing or practicing with them before they get too tired or frustrated. But the key early on is to make learning and playing golf a fun experience. Have a treat after a round of golf or a practice session. Parents must act like the “good coach,” making sure their kids P. 8

know they love them in spite of any score or performance out on the course. You don’t want kids to confuse who they are with what they score. Q. When did you first meet NBC’s Matt Lauer? A. I was the Director of Golf at Old Marsh Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Matt used to play golf there with a friend of mine from The Breakers. Anyway, one day I happened to see them in the locker room and started up a conversation. Matt finally says to me, “I need to come to see you.” It was nice to hear but I didn’t think anything would come of it. But the next week, he called me and said he was coming down for two days and wanted to set up a lesson. That was in the winter of 1998 and from the very first lesson we just hit it off. We’re good friends and when we work together we always have a good time. Q. What kind of golfer is Matt and what do you work on with him? A. He’s a good player, probably a seven/eight handicap, but he’s married now with young children and doesn’t have much time to play or to practice. When we get together, I work with Matt on his rhythm because he has a tendency to get too fast in his swing. So I try to get him to turn more and especially to rotate his body more through the shot. For players with faster tempos, I like to encourage them to get wider and with more turn in their backswings, to hit it more with their core body and not just with their hands. and project management firm whose managing partner, Timothy J. Miscovich, is based in Clarkston and Orlando. “Teaming up with Tim and his company is a natural and comfortable move to diversify our traditional role in the golf industry,” Richards said. “Tim’s client list of Golf Clubs, resorts and hospitality properties already overlaps with some of ours. Going forward we can work together to expand the variety of services we will offer clients.” Miscovich said with today’s lagging economy driving down values golf properties are most likely paying too much in property taxes. “Dave’s company is like ours, behind-the-scenes specialists who really understand the hospitality part of our business which makes them a natural fit with us,” he said. “There are a lot of people out there leaving money on the table and Resort & Golf can get the word out for us.” Miscovich has worked successfully on property tax relief for more than a dozen prominent public and private golf clubs and resorts across Michigan as well as hundreds of commercial real estate properties around the country. Over the years Richards has assisted course owners and architects on more than 150 projects, introducing them to the public and bringing in top national and international golf writers and editors to review the properties. His efforts led directly to national awards for dozens of courses, as well as career-building publicity for then up and coming architects and designers such as Tom Doak, Rick Smith, John Sanford, Raymond Hearn and others. He is credited with making Michigan one of the nation’s top golf destinations. In the lead-up to the 2004 Ryder Cup matches at Oakland Hills Country Club, the state’s Travel Michigan program selected Richards’ company, now known as Resort & Golf Marketing, to be the official public relations company to publicize the matches. Richards’ campaign to woo international and national writers, editors, and media movers and shakers to Detroit and Michigan produced stories and photographs in news outlets across the country and around the world valued at more than $10 million and reaching 42 million consumers. ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR HAMILTON GRAND – GOLF’S MOST COVETED ADDRESS ================================================================================= Kohler Co. today announced official development plans for Hamilton Grand, one of golf’s most photographed and iconic buildings. Located adjacent to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club in St. Andrews, Scotland, Hamilton Grand overlooks the 18th Green of the Old Course, The West Sands Beach and the Bay of St. Andrews. Encompassing 26 luxury residences, Hamilton Grand will become the fourth historic property restored and renovated by Kohler Co. Kohler Co., through its subsidiary, The Old Course Limited, purchased Hamilton Grand in late 2009. In conjunction with the Kingdom of Fife, Kohler Co. held a two-day public consultation and welcomed St. Andrews citizens to learn more about the plans and to provide feedback for restoring the building to P. 12

its former glory. The meetings were met with overwhelming support, underscoring the fact that Kohler Co. is sensitively developing one of the town’s most famous landmarks. With thorough input from the townspeople and the Fife Council, Kohler Co.’s first step was to officially change the name to “Hamilton Grand,” combining the titles of the building’s previous uses, the Grand Hotel, which opened in 1895, and Hamilton Hall, the University of St Andrews dormitory named after its Founder Thomas Hamilton. “Our goal is to restore Hamilton Grand and create a dwelling that will make the people of St. Andrews proud,” said Debbie Taylor, President – Hospitality and Real Estate Group, Kohler Co. “We have been honored to work with community members throughout this process. With their support, we are pleased to unveil our plans to the rest of the world.” Featuring unparalleled views of the Old Course, The West Sands Beach and the Bay of St. Andrews, the residences are available unfurnished or fully furnished with handcrafted furniture from Baker, a Kohlerowned company. Signature KOHLER plumbing products will be included in each residence. “Hamilton Grand will be a unique real estate opportunity for those who want to own a home in the birthplace of golf and a premier destination that is rich in history – the holy grail of golf,” said Taylor. “We are looking forward to restoring the building using our restoration expertise, and returning a piece of Scottish history to its landmark status.” For additional information on Hamilton Grand, visit http://www.HamiltonGrand.co.uk. =================================================================== TOP 10 CLUBS IN WILLIE PARK'S BAG WHEN HE WON THE 1887 BRITISH OPEN =================================================================== Bulger Driver Straight-faced Driver Spoon Brassie Cleek Iron Massie Iron-nibblick Wooden Putter Park's Patent Putter Taken from " A Disorderly Compendium of Golf" by Loren Rubenstein and Jeff Neuman ======================================== TOP 10 GOLF BETTING GAMES AND SIDE BETS ======================================== Nassau Round Robin Sandies Bingo Bango Bongo Barkies. His appointment was announced by George O'Grady, chief executive of the European Tour. Olazabal follows his longtime teammate, Seve Ballesteros (1997), as the only Spanish players to be named a Ryder Cup Captain. "It is a great honor to become the European Ryder Cup Captain and I will be committed to getting everything right in the build-up to the 2012 match," Olazabal said. "I've learned a lot along the way and ... I look forward to drawing on all that knowledge with the aim, of course, to keeping the cup in our possession." Olazabal has struggled with chronic back problems in recent years, limiting his appearances on tour to just three events in 2010. An essential requirement of the European Tour is that a Captain plays a full schedule the year of a Ryder Cup to judge potential team members. Along with being one of Europe's most popular players over the years, Olazabal has also been one of the team's most successful. He's won 18 and halved five of his 31 matches in the Ryder Cup, and was on the winning side in 1987, 1997 and 2006. He was also a member of the team that retained the trophy in 1989 with a 14-14 draw against the U.S. at The Belfry. Olazabal was Nick Faldo's vice captain when the U.S. won the Ryder Cup in 2008 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. He was a late addition to Montgomerie's staff last year. Montgomerie, who announced after the win at Celtic Manor Resort that he would be stepping down as Captain, said at the time that Olazabal would be "everybody's choice" to take over. Q.When and where did you give your first golf lesson? A. It was May 1984 at Green Ridge Country Club in Grand Rapids. Working as an assistant pro for Lynn Janson, I still remember Bill Somerville coming into the pro shop and setting up a lesson with me. A good player, Bill had a tendency to have a lot of lateral motion on his forward swing so we worked on him moving his lower body more through the shot. P. 16

Q.How did you first know you were interested in becoming a golf instructor? A. Well, I was fortunate during my college golf days at Alabama and before Green Ridge, to work as a range assistant at the Golf Digest Schools at North River Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa. I was around such outstanding teachers as Davis Love Jr., Bob Toski, Jim Flick and Peter Kostis. It was an incredible apprenticeship-type experience to listen and soak up what they had to say. They all had their individual styles and I listened and learned each of their methods. My primary job was to tee up shots for the teachers’ students so I was literally only a few feet away from these eye-opening lessons. The people on that staff were so talented. Q. Incidentally, how did you end up attending the University of Alabama? A. I wanted to go to a southern school so I could play year round. Golf coach Conrad Rehling recruited me and said I could earn a scholarship if I made the team. I’m proud to say I made the team all four years and I was co-captain my senior year. Q. As a teacher, what three fundamentals do you stress to your students? A. Pre-swing fundamentals are the foundation of the golf swing. I’m big on the correct grip, the correct posture, the correct alignment and the correct ball position. With these fundamentals the next objectives are to hit the ball solidly, to have the right shape to your golf swing, the right alignment of the clubface leaving impact, to have the club shaft leaning forward at impact, and finally to have the right sequence in your swing. But if I was simplifying all of this I might say it’s the three S’s: set-up, shape and sequence. Q.What’s the most misunderstood aspect of the golf swing? A. I think it’s the thought that in order to hit the ball straight you have to have the clubface square at impact and continue straight down the line through the shot. Well, actually to hit it straight, you must come somewhat from the inside toward the ball and with the clubface slightly open nearing impact and with the body continuing to rotate around the ball. The swing is moving on an arc and not on a straight path back and through the target line. So actually you want to square the clubface to the ball at separation not at impact. It’s an important difference. Q. Golfers usually don’t spend enough time practicing, so what do you recommend as a regimen? A. Breaking down someone’s practice time, I would recommend one-third time spent with the long game, one-third with pitching and chipping and one-third with putting. And within each one of these areas, I would urge one-third time working on mechanics, one-third time with drills, and one-third with tests simulating game or pressure-type situations. Q. Explain the final piece, the tests simulating game or pressure situations? A. It’s a matter of transferring practice drills to performance in a game-like situation. For example, after you practice putting you should end up testing yourself with just one ball to various cup locations and gauge how well you lag to that target from different lengths. You need to test yourself making putts so as to get a sense of an actual competitive situation. Q. You’ve worked with a number of Tour players. What aspect of their games should average golfers notice and emulate? A. Tour players are methodical in their pre-shot routines. First, they size up the shot and gather basic information such as yardage. Then they’ll size up how they’re playing that day and what they’ll need to do to execute that shot. For example, are they hitting it well enough to pull off a shot to the back left portion of the green? So based upon that quick self-assessment, they’ll decide to attack or to play con-
