The doors open at 2:00 p.m. See you there. http://www.michigangolfshow.com/lansing/ ================================================== PELLUCID'S "STATE OF THE INDUSTRY": By Terry Moore ================================================== Following a busy period with the West Michigan Golf Show, I finally found some time to look back at my notebook from the 2011 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. The best seminar I attended, and it’s been that way for years, was Pellucid’s “State of the Industry” presentation. A charter subscriber to the Pellucid e-newsletter, I consider founder Jim Koppenhaver to be one of the most cogent and clear-eyed analysts in golf. Taking a cue from a certain Fox TV commentator but without all the bombast, Koppenhaver remains faithful to the “no spin zone,” earnestly drawing conclusions based not on ‘happy face’ sentiments but instead on available and concrete industry data. In a fast-paced, one-hour presentation with colleague Stuart Lindsay, Koppenhaver dished out a hearty menu of compelling data and trends about the game. Here’s a smattering of items from their impressive talk: · Evidence shows golf lost 800,000 players in the last year. Of this total, “casual players” (1-9 rounds per year) represented 500,000. In the age category of 18-35, this demo is not taking up the game as readily as in past generations. More unsettling is the report that rounds by “Baby Boomers,” those over 55, went down last year. This sector, looking possibly at crunched retirement funds and real estate holdings, still “are not feeling as affluent” as in pre-Recession days. But there are some positive signs: junior and women golf sectors actually increased rounds. · In terms of supply and demand of golf courses, it’s still “too little and too slow.” There was a net closing of 61 courses, not enough to match weakening demand. For private clubs, the sector remains under stress as the private golfer base has shrunk dramatically and more clubs have gone semi-private or public. · In terms of rounds, it’s “depressing but true” with a 2% decline for public courses and a 3.2%
P. 2

decline for private. There’s a continued downward shift in rounds played, labeled “Facility Velocity” by Pellucid. · Decent weather suitable for golf is an important variable. In this regard, Michigan fared well last year with the Lower Peninsula realizing a 6% gain in “golf playable hours” while the Upper Peninsula netted a 7% gain. Good weather in the spring is more important (for revenues) than good weather in the fall. · Course conditions remain the “number one” priority by golf consumers selecting venues to play in all salient surveys. Lesson to operators: cutbacks in maintenance practices and/or budgets must be done carefully if at all so as not to generate a golfer backlash. · Online discount teetimes and Groupon-type programs must be used with caution and smarts. According to Lindsay, “they do deliver new customers” but “less than 11% came back to buy the same discounted rate.” So collecting names and data about this discounted customer is absolutely critical to justify the program. Looking at the current dynamics and ROI of Groupon for golf courses, Lindsay said simply, “it’s not a good deal.” · With the rise of social media—i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.-- “reputation management is important and needs vigilance.” Since anyone—including nefarious competitors—can post negative and often unfair comments on a course’s Facebook page, such social media must be monitored by operators. · Facing continuing challenges in maintaining rounds and revenues, operators must recall the lessons drawn from the 1982 business best-seller, In Search of Excellence. Staying close to the customer and increasing productivity by motivated staff members remain as vital as ever. Excellence is often the byproduct of “unusual efforts on the part of apparently ordinary employees.” · “Who are our customers?” Operators must continually ask themselves that key question and keep refining their methods of data collection and customer communication. There was a wealth of other helpful information and statistics at this Pellucid presentation. Oddly enough and in spite of the hurdles facing the industry I still came away energized. Sometimes a sobering glance at the scoreboard is the first step in making up lost ground. ================================================ ADAM IKAMAS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR MiGCSA ================================================ The Executive Director has been chosen to serve the MiGCSA. He has been a strong presence in Michigan golf for a very long time and both the State and the game are better for it! His knowledge of all phases of golf is exceptional as is his journalistic talent to relay it to fans of the game. Congratulations to Terry for this well-deserved recognition. THAD GUTOWSKI ================================================================================ The game-changing innovations emerging almost daily in the world of Internet marketing can be a bit daunting. With over 600 million Facebook users and about one hundred and fifty million on Twitter, presenting your golf course will become even more complex this year as do-at-all Smart phones outsell PC’s. The marketing equation continues to shift as these new mediums develop and your customer’s preferences change or expand to embrace them. I wish I had a Ouija board to guide me to where a particular customer or prospect may look for information. Is it a website? Newsletter? Email? Or the ever-expanding social media platforms: Facebook; Twitter; You Tube; MySpace; LinkedIn or any of the other 150 or so on the web today. Let’s face it; the options are staggering in this new and quickly evolving communication landscape. Studies indicate Senior citizens are the fastest growing segment on Facebook and other social media as well. But this of course could be because those younger embraced these concepts much earlier. However, this remains an important statistic because according to the National Golf Foundation the over-fifty age category accounts for over half the rounds now played in the United States. But one fact remains, your message must appeal to a broad cross-section of the market regardless of
P. 6
MICHIGAN GOLFER

age, sex or playing ability. Let’s face, this is a lot tougher than writing copy for Victoria’s Secret. Here are a few pointers to make your message more appealing regardless of what media you are using: Stand out from the competition with more information, education, personality and peer recommendations. Corporate-speak and price won’t cut it. If your messages are filled with a sales pitch, chances are they soon won’t get beyond the Inbox. Remember, content is king. The goal is to develop something close to a conversation with your subscribers. And the best way to achieve this is to cultivate a personal reader-oriented approach by using the term “you” and not “I” or “we.” Consider putting a face on your message with a photo. This helps the reader feel they are in a one-onone relationship. If it is something related to playing the game, use a photo of your golf professional. For a food and beverage message, a chef or cook photo makes the story more acceptable. Even a positive comment from a member of the grounds-crew could add a touch that is not often, if ever seen. It may sound corny but like chicken soup it can’t hurt. I feel there is nothing worse than a long string of the same logo or partial photo adjacent to postings. Doing things different is what it is all about. Facebook offers a social-type environment that encourages customers and prospects to share information with you and others about your facility and services. They may write about an out of the ordinary experience they have had with you and even with your competition. That’s why it is critically important to monitor your Facebook page often. Let me rephrase that, very, very often. At the West Michigan Golf show recently I talked to a golf course manager who said his facility had a Facebook page, but he hadn’t looked at it since sometime last season. I checked it out this week and was shocked at some of the negative postings that were on his page. God only knows how many others were turned off by what they read. At the risk of being redundant, a Facebook Fan page can be a blessing or a curse. It’s up to you.
