Miles of Golf is in our neighborhood and a place where we buy our gear and practice our game. We had a chance to chat with co-owner Doug Davis, who, though disappointed over the turn down of their proposal to take over the Huron Hills GC property in Ann Arbor, seemed fired up as Miles of Golf continues to pack them in. It seems like when ever I pass the place the parking lot is jammed. The Dave Kendall Golf Academy is the teaching arm of the Miles of Golf. Kendall, former President of the Michigan PGA, has been responsible for the development of countless golfers, including prodigy, Henry Do. Do shot a 62 at Boyne's Tournament of Champions to lead the tournament after the play on day two. http://michigangolfer.tv/2010shows/boyne_toc/day2.mov ======================= MICHIGAN GOLF SHOW ======================= Todd Smith, golf show impresario, for both the Lansing and Novi golf shows, was excited about the Michigan Golf Show which starts today. Smith indicated that the show is sold out for the first time in seven years. Since the Michigan Golf Show has long been a barometer for the golf business, perhaps, we have turned the corner or bottomed out of the recent and hurtful slump. Novi, long viewed as one of America's strongest golf shows, will feature 450 exhibitors vying for the attention of the over 30,000 show goers expected over the three day run. The show will have many interactive activities such as a $25,000 chipping challenge, Junior Golf Clinics presented by Crystal Mountain Resorts, 2011 New product demonstration area presented by Boyne Country Sports and a $10,000 putting contest. Be there or be square. http://michigangolfshow.com

====================================================== BRIAN O'NEILL'S QUICK TIP OF THE WEEK - OVER THE TOP ====================================================== Brian O'Neill gives another one of his "Quick Tips" by showing how to eliminate the "over the top" swing. Got duffle bag? http://michigangolfer.tv/2011shows/boyne_oneill/ ================================================================================= TODAY'S THE DAY FOR NON PROFITS TO FUNDRAISE AT THE ISLAND RESORT CHAMPIONSHIP AT SWEETGRASS ================================================================================= Non-profit organizations and schools can raise funds easily for their charities or events by selling entrance tickets to the Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass this summer. Regional entities with 501(c)(3) status are urged to contact Sweetgrass marketing coordinator Debbie Wickstrom at (906) 723-2123,by close of business on Friday, March 4, in order to be entered into its community ticket program. Entry allows organizations to collect 100% of the ticket sale proceeds for their cause. Those who meet non-profit standards will receive an initial packet of 100 three-day ticket passes to sell at the $10 face value for the June 24-26 LPGA Futures Tour event. More tickets can be requested by each entity after those initial tickets are sold, to raise additional funds. “Our community has been so generous to us, and we’ve found a unique way to give back to them,” said Tony Mancilla, co-chair of the Championship. “We want everyone to participate in bringing professional golf back to Michigan, and build our spectator base for the event.” “We encourage golf fans to support their local organizations when purchasing tickets,” said Co-Chair Susan Harris. “We look forward to seeing groups attend the event together in June.” Taken and edited from a Buffalo Communications release. ============================================================================= MICHIGAN PGA TEACHING SUMMIT TO TAKE PLACE MARCH 21-22 AT EAGLE EYE GC ============================================================================= The Teaching Committee is excited to announce that the 2011 Michigan PGA Teaching Summit will take place March 21st, 22nd at Eagle Eye Golf Club. The committee has put together a great line up of presenters including our keynote speaker and top 100 teacher, Mike Adams. It was “Senior” at the show and they had turned out sans walkers to make for a spirited opening. The Lansing Show has had its challenges over these difficult years for the golf industry. And while the show has lost some participation in the past few years, it still looked great and their was a lot of excitement in the aisles. Lansing is an important golf market and seems to be, like other areas, in a recovery mode. ================================================= MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION 2011 SHOWS http://michigangolfer.tv/archives.html ****************************NOW PLAYING *************************** - 25th Anniversary Preview of the Jones Masterpiece at Treetops with Kevin McKinley and Jack Berry - 25th Anniversary Preview of The Legend at Shanty Creek Resort with Brian Kautz and Jack Berry - 100th Anniversary Preview of the Michigan Amateur with David Graham and Jack Berry - Boyne's Tournament Season and Golf Packages with Jeff Ecceleston and Jack Berry - Brian O'Neill's Quick Tips - LochenHeath is Back and Basking with Mike Husby and Jack Berry - LPGA Futures Tour - Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass with Dave Douglas and Jack Berry - Railside Golf Club @ Byron Center - Club Membership on the Rise with Jim Bultema and Jack Berry - PGA Michigan and Patriot Day with Kevin McKinley and Jack Berry - The Treetops Cup: USA vs Canada - Ryder Cup Style with Kevin McKinley and Jack Berry - The Madness at Marsh Ridge Resort Larry Bowden and Jack Berry - The Cyber-Geezer a.k.a. ================================================================================ SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING - # 7 IN A SERIES: BY THE CYBER GEEZER a.k.a. THAD GUTOWSKI ================================================================================ Sharp marketers are quickly learning that Social Media has evolved into much more than what the name suggests. It has become a very unique one-on-one method of conversing electronically with customers and prospects. People are talking to each other all over the Internet and being part of this conversation can play a significant part in marketing your business. In the rush to embrace Facebook, we are discovering how different social networks respond in different ways. Just a short time ago the experts warned that businesses could not “sell” on Social Media because the audience would rebel and the efforts would fail. We quickly learned that done right it could be the best part of your marketing save direct encounter with the customer on your turf, so to speak. Those who experience the most success focus heavily on the “social” aspect of the process and not the commercial. This may be a classic example of a not often used term today, “soft sell.” As we approach the end of this series on social media marketing it may be timely to review a few of the keys required to experience success. Unlike other forms of promotion and I am referring to conventional advertising where you carry the ball, in social media the customer is eager to move the message. You can and should tactfully point them in the right direction, but they will only carry the message if it provides value, solves a problem or is just so damn interesting that he/she is compelled to share it with others. Allow me to digress for a bit to touch base on the Pareto Principle or what many call the 20/80 Rule, because it opens the door to a critically important component in social marketing success. Quite simply, it means that 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. You may know this, but about eighty per-cent of your revenue comes from about 20% of your customers. It is called the Vital Few & Trivial many. Pareto is alive and well in social media because the Vital Few are the Holy Grail for you. These are the people who will tell your story, rally others to your cause and speak up when the need occurs. The key to your social media marketing success is developing a positive relationship with these “Influencers” by posting something that turns them on, so to speak. Something they want to read not what you want them to read. (Sound familiar?) And what they feel they should share with others. Social Media platforms are working because people connect and communicate with circles of friends… each with their circle of friends…each with their circle of friends…ad finitum. These overlapping and interconnected circles allow users to spread the message to a staggering number of people. But it all begins with something that is worth sending on: compelling content.

Let’s face it, anyone with two fingers and a keyboard can knock out a message. And on a Facebook Social page you may be able to get away with something loaded with errors, misinformation or bad syntax. After all, Friends accept each other’s inadequacies. But that won’t fly on a Facebook Business page, which can be visited by virtually anyone: friend or foe. Think of it as a letter to a personal friend versus an advertisement in Golf Digest. I presume it is not necessary to explain the difference. (I am reminded of the Infinite Monkey Theorem that states a monkey hitting typewriter keys at random for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare.) There is an assumption that Facebook is a free medium that will deliver tons of new customers. Sorry folks that is not the case. There is no question that it has a mind-boggling audience but it is takes some time-consuming effort to generate a qualified audience. In the case of most daily-fee courses, it is those golfers who reside or work within thirty or so miles of their facility. Like most everything else in marketing today, you must fight for attention because your competion is after the same guy or gal. And many have discovered that this fan-base can lose interest if a site’s content fails to ring their bells. Is your facility on Facebook? Has it brought you new business? Concentrate on the one fault you want to overcome." "If a lot of people gripped a knife and fork the way they do a golf club, they'd starve to death." "The fairways were so narrow you had to walk down them single file." "You can not go into a shop and buy a good game of golf." "There are no short hitters on the tour anymore, just long and unbelievably long." "The three things I fear most in golf are lightning, Ben Hogan and a downhill putt."
