By Jack Berry ============================ You never know what you’ll find when you’re looking for something else. While doing the story on the Michigan Amateur, which started in 1906, I looked to see who won the United States Amateur that year. It was Eben M. Byers. He’d lost twice in the final before winning in 1906. I Googled him and found he was a wealthy Pittsburgh businessman. A Scientific Magazine story described him as the epitome of the Roaring Twenties, a millionaire socialite, broad-chested, handsome, expert trap shooter and golf champion. As a health drink, on the advice of his physiotherapist, he drank two or three bottles daily of an advertised drink, Radithor. He died of radium poisoning. His bone structure basically disintegrated and he weighed 92 pounds when he died, eighteen months after he began consuming the supposed health drink. Radithor contained one microgram of radium and one microgram of esothorium to be mixed with triple distilled water and drunk from the bottle after any meal. When an investigation began, Byers was too weak to testify and died in 1932, a month before his 52nd birthday. Radithor was off the market and the company closed ================================================== MICHIGAN GOLFER MAGAZINE ONLINE SPRING ISSUE http://michigangolfer.com ================================================== 1996 - 2011 -Fifteen Years of Online Readership of the Michigan Golfer Table of Contents - Treetops & Shanty Creek Celebrates their 25th Anniversary - Jack Berry Jack Berry, PGA Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award winner tells the tale of these two P. 2

It’s a privileged assignment and one I take seriously as both a golf writer for Michigan Golfer and as a radio commentator for WOOD-AM/FM radio in Grand Rapids. To me, the Masters is the sum total of all of its many traditions and yearly innovations—large and small—that help make it the best staged and executed sporting event in the world. Your list may differ but here’s only a sampling of why I love the Masters: * Calendar continuity: You can always count on the final round of the Masters falling on the second Sunday of April. It’s comforting to know the 2012 Masters will be held April 2-8 (the earliest) and the 2013 Masters will be April 8-14 (the latest.) And you don’t have to be a savant to know the 2021 Masters will be April 5-11. If only Easter were this easy to figure out. * Orderly conduct with manners: At every tee and green and in between, you can always count on green litter bags, beckoning patrons’ cups and wrappers, imprinted with this simple plea: Please. Likewise, patrons are instructed: Wear your badge, please, where it can be seen. And remember: “Everyone should be treated with courtesy and respect.” The last time I experienced an environment this orderly and polite was back in kindergarten. * Spectator Guide and Pairing Sheets: You can always count on the complimentary guides and pairing sheets to provide all you need to know about the tournament, the course and the field. With those two pieces of information and a pair of binoculars, one is fully equipped to be a knowledgeable patron of the Masters. To wit: “Did you know Matt Kuchar attended Georgia Tech on a Robert T. Jones Jr. scholarship?” Look it up!

* Structures: You can always count on permanent structures, not tents, for patron services. And they all are expertly designed and built with stone and wood and fit in neatly. My favorite area is found behind the fifth green where a veritable patron village is assembled with restrooms, picnic area, golf shop, concessions, merchandise shipping and checking, even an ATM machine. ATM stands for “At The Masters” so have no regrets over excessive logo purchasing. * Nature and beauty: You can always count on unmatched form and beauty at Augusta National during the Masters week. Spring is abloom and the dogwoods, the azaleas, the tall Loblolly pines, and the impeccable turf all contribute to a majestic landscape. It’s been estimated that since the course was built in 1934, more than 80,000 plants of over 350 varieties have been added to Augusta National. It may all look natural but don’t tell that to the army of superintendents and horticulturists minding the garden. * Drama amid serenity: You can always count on feeling something dramatic and stirring on this grand stage. Maybe it’s the spirits of golf legends ever lurking and always celebrated here at certain bridges, at plaques, at fountains. Maybe it’s the sense of history that resonates amid the serenity. Far from the noisy, distracting world of cell phones and fragmented chatter, the Masters becomes an oasis of focused and quiet attention. Pardon my Zen. * Customs and traditions: You can always count on the Champions dinner on Tuesday night, the Par-3 Contest on Wednesday, the honorary starters on Thursday morning, multiple pair of crystal goblets earned for eagles at 13 and 15 on Saturday, and the newly crowned champion slipping on the Green Jacket in Sunday’s twilight. Of course, the special allure of the Masters is how it retains and polishes these traditions while being ever-committed to constant improvement and innovation. Televising the Par-3 Contest, the Junior Pass Program, the Asian Championship, the new practice area, the new patron parking and entrance area, the patron feedback kiosks -- all are pushing the tournament forward. Maybe that’s the best reason to love the Masters: it’s wonderfully the same and wonderfully different. ====================================================================== ARNOLD PALMER INVITATIONAL - "HEY MASTERCARD, PUT IT ON MY TAB." ====================================================================== This was our second time at Palmer's Invitational, one of the four tournaments we have covered on the PGA Tour's Florida Swing. This is a breeze to attend, you just exit off of I-4 pull into the Universal Studios parking area and you are able to take care of your parking, transportation to and from the tournament and ticket for $45 with a swipe of your Mastercard. We also took advantage of the Mastercard Club that was available to card holders. They had a nice lounge area, a free photography service, loads of tournament literature and a relatively painless cash bar. While it was not totally Priceless, it did add to our memories of the day. Since the advent of the Michigan Golfer, we have made the Florida trip almost a yearly occasion. On this particular trip, one of our friends and golfing buddy, Doug Joy, let us use his on-the-beach condo at St. Pete Beach for 10 days. GLSP, with its variety of newsletters, magazines and videos, produces over 150 deadlines each year that we have to meet. It is a hectic life, but one we have grow used to. However, the 10 day comp vacation at Doug's condo, has indeed been priceless. P. 6

================================================================================= THE KING'S LONG HISTORY WITH BAY HILL CLUB AND LODGE : By Brent Kelley, About.com ================================================================================= Arnold Palmer is the owner of Bay Hill Club and Lodge. It's the club where the Arnold Palmer Invitational is played annually. But Palmer's relationship with the club isn't one of convenience or simply business. Palmer first visited Bay Hill in 1965, fell in love with the place and soon knew he wanted to live there and own the club. In this gallery, we tell the story of Palmer's first visit to Bay Hill in 1965, a visit that also included Jack Nicklaus. The three photos below from Palmer's very first visit to Bay Hill appear here courtesy of Bay Hill Club and Lodge. Click into the gallery to view the photos and read about Palmer's history at Bay Hill. By the way: While Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club and Lodge is a private club, the general public can access the golf course and facilities (and perhaps catch a glimpse of Arnie) by staying in the Lodge. http://golf.about.com/od/arnoldpalmer/ig/Arnold-Palmer-Bay-Hill/?nl=1 =================================================================== Arnold Palmer Invitational, Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Orlando. By Jennie McCafferty ============================ ======================================= Orlando, FL (March 27, 2011) -- On a sunny day, with temperatures in the high 80's, we watched some stunning shots on the final day of Arnold Palmer's Invitational at Bay Hill: Bubba Watson's stinger from the tee on One and Phil Michelson's approach on Three. For the most part, though, the greens seemed to win as many a sure-birdie-putt turned into a par. Michigan's Tom Gillis found a group of fans, including us, on his way to the tee on Nine. Tom had an even par round and and even par tournament, finishing in a tie for 30th. Part of the fun was seeing Rookie of the Year, Rickie Fowler, and Bubba Watson attract exhuberant galleries. Fowler's head-to-toe, shocking orange apparel got more attention than his play, prompting one member of the gallery to wonder if Fowler's gear required a battery. We also noticed many alums of the Western Amateur's Point 'O Woods years enjoying successful professional careers. Among those who made the cut at Bay Hill were Western Am Champions Ryan Moore (2004), Tiger Woods (1994), Phil Mickelson (1991), Scott Verplank (1985) and players, Kyle Stanley, Sam Saunders (Arnold Palmer's grandson), Rickie Fowler, and Colt Knost. Other Western Am alums in the field included Camillo Villegas, Ben Curtis, Bill Haas, Dustin Johnson, Alex Prugh, and Chris DiMarco (1988 Western Am Champion). Now that the Western Amateur has moved to Chicago, we miss seeing the rising stars at Point O'Woods. The traveling circus that is the PGA Tour spends the weeks leading up to the Masters in Florida. Each of the "Florida Swing" tournaments I've seen has interesting features to distinguish it: Doral has the limited, international field and the Blue Monster testing them. Transitions has the fabulous Innisbrook lodging from where one can watch golfers play Copperhead, the toughest course on the Florida Swing. Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill is classy, has the fan-friendliest parking of any tournament, and a field Arnie invites. Still on my to-see list, the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens. All of the Florida Swing courses are open to the public.

=================================================== NGF TO HOLD INAUGURAL MUNICIPAL GOLF INSTITUTE =================================================== The National Golf Foundation (NGF) will hold the inaugural Municipal Golf Institute on Sep 6-9 at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, WV. This national educational forum is designed to help municipal golf course operators improve their bottom lines, and to assist public officials that oversee these golf courses as they engage the community in issues such as taxpayer funding of operating deficits and whether municipalities should be competing against private enterprise. The NGF is conducting the Municipal Golf Institute in association with the National Recreation and Park Association and the National Training Center for Public Facility Managers at the Oglebay Resort. Responding to the dire financial situation facing many municipalities, the NGF has decided to narrow the focus of its broader National Institute for Golf Management, which had a successful run of 20 years at the Oglebay Resort. http://ngf.org. ==================================================== BRIAN O'NEILL'S QUICK TIP OF THE WEEK : Easing Tension ==================================================== Brian O'Neill gives another one of his "Quick Tips" with his thoughts on "Easing Tension " http://michigangolfer.tv/2011shows/boyne_oneill/ ======================================================== MINZEY'S MUSINGS: MORE OF THE NATURAL LAWS OF GOLF ======================================================== The stages of golf are: Sudden Collapse, Radical Change, Complete Frustration, Slow Improvement, Brief Mastery, and Sudden Collapse. If your driver is hot, your putter will be ice cold; if you can hit your irons, you will top your woods; if you are keeping your right elbow tucked in, your head will come up. No golfer ever played too fast. One birdie is a hot streak. Whatever you think you're doing wrong is the one thing you're doing right. Any change works for three holes. The odds of hitting a duffed shot increase by the square of the number of people watching. Never play your son for money. Bets lengthen putts and shorten drives. Confidence evaporates in the presence of water. It's not a gimme if you're still away. Always limp with the same leg for the whole round. The rake is always in the other trap. Nothing straightens out a nasty slice quicker than a sharp dogleg to the right. The ball always lands where the pin was yesterday. It never begins to rain on the 18th hole. No one with funny headcovers ever broke par. Your straightest iron shot of the day will be exactly one club short. If you seem to be hitting your shots straight on the driving range, it's probably because you're not

aiming at anything. You really only need four clubs to hit every bad shot in golf. ========================================================= ASGCA SITE BECOMES MORE INTERNATIONAL ========================================================= ASGCA provides the most authoritative information on golf course architecture to audiences around the world. The continued growth of development of the ASGCA website (http://www.asgca.org) is an example of serving members and the game in North America and everywhere the game is played. Nearly one-in-four visitors to http://www.asgca.org are from outside the United States. Responding to the need to provide information to people around the world, site content now includes targeted information in English, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. Content posted in Korean is planned for later in 2011. “The information and messages on the site are valuable to audiences in North America and around the world,” said Rick Robbins, ASGCA, scheduled to serve as ASGCA president beginning spring 2013. Robbins’ office translated the portion of the site in Mandarin Chinese and he knows firsthand the international appeal of ASGCA and its members. “Our game is growing and at the same time the world is getting smaller,” Robbins continued. “The focus for everyone working on the site is for it to be the number one destination for anyone searching for information on golf course architecture. The translations are another step in that direction.” The site had a quarter-of-a-million page views in 2010. Besides the United States, the nations accounting for the most visitors were Canada, the United Kingdom, China, Australia, India and South Korea. -- An ASGCA release. ================================================= MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION 2011 SHOWS http://michigangolfer.tv/archives.html ================================================= ***********************COMING ATTRACTIONS*********************** MGCOA Legislative Day on the Capitol Lawn Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2011 Michigan Golfer at the Master's Vartan Kupelian and his Golf Writer's Association of America Presidency Fieldststone Golf Course: An Arthur Hills Design The Treetops Cup: USA vs Canada ****************************NOW PLAYING *************************** The Sundance Course at A-Ga-Ming: Narrated by Jerry Matthews Antrim Dells Becomes an A-Ga-Ming Property: Mike Brown Interviewed It Started with Chick Harbert: The Torch Course at A-Ga-Ming Antrim Dells GC: Narrated by Jerry Matthews Bucks Run Golf Club with Jon Conklin
