Nicklaus left town after he and Arnold Palmer hit ceremonial opening tee shots to start the tournament and Mickelson seemed to disappear too, never contending. Woods, who says his swing change is in a “process,” hasn't turned in four consecutive good rounds since he hit a tree and fire hydrant outside his driveway and turned into his own Thanksgiving turkey 18 months ago.

This was a memorable Masters Tournament, prefaced by countless interviews of Jack Nicklaus remembering his victory 25 years ago at the age of 46 (he said he was interviewed more this year than he was when he won), whether Phil Mickelson's hot hand at Houston would carry over to a second green jacket or if Tiger Woods' “process” finally would pay off.

Instead, this turned into one of the best of the 75 Masters since Michigan Golf Hall of Famer Horton Smith won the first one in Putting led to McIlroy's downfall. 1934. Woods turned in fireworks like the young Tiger with a 5under-par 31 first nine Sunday but the cliché is that the Masters doesn't begin until the last nine on Sunday afternoon and there certainly P. 2

Warm and wonderful for most days at this Masters

was an element of truth in it. Woods, 35, faded on the nine after being one of 10 people with a shot at it, then seven and finally South African Charl Schwartzel won with four straight closing birdies, 50 years after Gary Player became the first South African to win the Masters. Actually, the die was cast on the first hole when Schwartzel holed an 80-foot chip from short right of the green and four shot leader Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, playing right behind him, missed a short par putt. Despite opening 65-69-70 and leading from the start, McIlroy consistently missed short putts in those three rounds, failing to capitalize on excellent iron play. And that has been the Irishman's weakness despite some 63s in tournament play including the first round of the British Open last year on the Old Course at St. Andrews. McIlroy isn't the first leader to implode on Sunday at Augusta, though. Greg Norman led by six in 1996 but shot 78 on Sunday and Nick Faldo, Norman's nemesis in the majors, shot 67 and won by five shots. P. 4

Norman had tied the course record with a first round 63. But Sunday is different at the Masters with the best finishing nine holes in championship golf with equal opportunities for eagles, birdies, bogeys and worse. McIlroy got the worse. His hooked tee shot on the 10th ricocheted off one of the tall loblolly pines and landed in virgin territory. No one remembered seeing a shot wind up between two member/guest cabins 40 yards to the left of the fairway. Triple bogey. Then a double at the 11th and single at the 12th. As good as McIlroy is, and he is good, he has a penchant for a triple or double, sometimes a couple doubles. Rickie Fowler is the same. They're young. McIlroy is 21, Fowler is 22. Learning often is tough, especially in the highly pressurized major championships. “I unraveled, said McIlroy who led for 63 holes until the disastrous 10th, a tough hole even when the tee shot lands in the fairway. But again, McIlroy didn't blow the biggest lead. After Norman's six shots weren't enough, Ed Sneed's five shot lead in 1979 wasn't enough either. Sneed bogied the last three holes and went into the Masters' first sudden death playoff with Tom Watson and Fuzzy Zoeller who was playing his first Masters. They all parred the first hole and Zoeller won on the second with a birdie. Then, as now, the playoff started on the 10th hole. Ken Venturi, like McIlroy, had a four shot lead in the 1956 Masters. Venturi was a 24-year-old amateur. He shot 80 on Sunday and Jackie Burke, with four rounds in the 70s (Venturi had two in the 60s), came from eight shots back and won by a shot. Burke shot one-under-par 71, one of only two rounds under par that day. Sam Snead also shot 71 and tied for fourth. Venturi received a silver medal for runnerup, a silver-gold cup as low amateur, a gold medal as low amateur, a crystal vase for the low first round, a crystal highball glass for an eagle on 13 in the first round, and another one for an eagle on eight in the second round. He got everything but a green jacket and green money. It's doubtful that McIlroy will find much solace in the fact that he's the third 54-hole leader in the last four majors to shoot 80 or above. Dustin Johnson shot 82 in the last round of the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, won by McIlroy's Northern Ireland compatriot, Graeme McDowell. And Nick Watney shot 81 in the final round of last year's PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. Watney wasn't a contender but he also shot an 81 in the last round of the Open at Pebble Beach. One thing McIlroy has had, as opposed to Johnson and Watney, is support from fans and the media. In nearly every sport when a player has blown a big lead, he shuns the media and certainly doesn't sign autographs. McIlroy talked on television, talked to the writers and everyone described him with one word: Classy. And, uniformly, everyone figures he will win a major, maybe more. McIlroy said he will learn from this experience. It would help, too, if he'd work on his putting. One last note: Louis Oosthuizen, Schwartzel's best friend and reigning British Open champion, is pictured in the 2011 Masters Media Guide holding a big crystal bowl for winning last year's Par Three Contest. And this year, Schwartzel did him one better: a green jacket. P. 6

************************************************** BIRDIES By Terry Moore

Looking at Schwartzel’s stats for the week, revealed the following: Although overall he was T-18 in the all-important greens in regulation category he was T-1 for the final round with 16 GIR. In putting he was 2nd best for the week with only two three-putts. In driving accuracy, he was T-31; on Saturday Schwartzel only hit 6 fairways yet still fired a 68!

Finishing off a major championship in style is a mark of a champion. Unheralded Charl Schwartzel certainly did that with a record-setting run of four birdies on his final holes on at the Masters. But how he started off the day was equally remarkable. I mean, his 30-yard chip-in for birdie at the par-four first was only the second birdie on that sneaky tough hole for the entire final round! And then to top that, two holes later he holes out a 114-yard wedge for eagle, doing another “Larry Mize” raised to the second power. Yes, one could say Schwartzel had some “lucky” bounces but that’s inevitable in the course of any tournament. He just had his good bounces in the stretch of the first three holes of the final round of the Masters. But making four clutch birdie putts on his final holes really makes these “but what if” discussions a silly exercise. No one lost the Masters, including Rory McIlroy. Schwartzel simply won it in blazing glory.

The man of the hour

Schwartzel’s win means all four of golf’s major trophies are now in the possession of non-Americans with two players from South Africa, one player from Northern Ireland, and one player from Germany all laying claim to the prizes. Call it the Global Slam. That’s fine with me and it’s really no surprise given how golf has evolved. I liked what Schwartzel said after Saturday’s round when asked about the seven international players gathered on the 54-hole leaderboard: “It’s just a bunch of really good players coming through. The world is big. America is big, but the world is bigger.” Indeed, we all like to root for more familiar players we see on the PGA Tour but golf is now played on a global stage. On this note the one edge players from other continents have over American players is that they compete in events that are, by and large, not as deep in overall competitive talent as the PGA Tour. As such, their chances for victories are slightly better than their American counterparts. Hence, winning begets winning and such positive outcomes instill vital poise and confidence especially during a tense final round.

Finally, if one is truly happy about golf becoming an Olympic sport in 2016 in Brazil, one should be equally pleased about Charl Schwartzel completing the Global Slam. Look at it this way: we want more international golfers to discover Pure Michigan and its treasure chest of fine courses. We’ll worry about the exchange rate later. ****** Masters Notebook: University of Michigan’s Lion Kim didn’t make the cut after firing rounds of 76-72 but he had a memorable week. Earning a spot in the field due to last summer’s U.S. Public Links title, Kim was joined by family and friends as well as his U-M coaches in Augusta. I happened to chat with him briefly on Wednesday when he cut short his practice round to compete early in the Par 3 Contest where Assistant U-M coach Chris Whitten caddied for him. Along side playing partners Bubba Watson and Aaron Baddeley, Kim shot an even par 27 for the fan-and-family favorite event. The Augusta Chronicle also reported that Kim had papers and exams waiting for him back in Ann Arbor and where his American Culture professor had never heard of the Masters when told of it by Kim last month.

*** OK, some Tiger Woods comments. Certainly at times he was the Tiger of lore, most notably during his

second round 66 and his final round on Sunday of 67 which was highlighted by a riveting five-under par front nine of 31. But I’m still scratching my head over why he again switched putters (from a Scotty Cameron Titleist Newport 2 to a Nike Method mini-mallet) earlier this year while also allowing teacher Sean Foley to fiddle with his short game. Tiger’s putting and chipping over the last few years (prescandal) were never the problem. It was mainly a balky driver. So why he would mess with his once impregnable putting and chipping technique baffles me especially after seeing him miss short critical putts as he did on Sunday at 12 and 15 and with a mediocre chip on 13 which led to a costly par. For the week, Tiger tied with Justin Rose for the most three-putts with six. He also ended his Saturday round with a bogey set up by another poor chip from the back of the green. In his Tuesday press conference, Woods said his game is still undergoing a “process” where “the putting stroke, the short game, the swing, the same release has to mirror throughout the entire bag.” Sorry, I don’t get it. *** Mindful of Augusta National’s co-founder Clifford Roberts credo that “no public event ever stands still, but gets either better or worse,” Masters chairman Billy Payne has marshaled in a new era of “constant improvements” for the tournament such as the Junior Patron program, the Asian Amateur Championship which guarantees its winner a coveted spot in the field, televising the Par Three Contest, a redesigned website, apps for the Android-based phones and iPhones and the new Masters video game, to mention only a few. But I was most impressed with the new permanent seating structure with upgraded seats for the Tournament’s expansive and quintessential practice area. Atop the back row of the seating structure I observed a long metal rail where standing patrons might rest drinks and personal items while viewing the action. In a neat little touch, the designer even punched out the iconic Masters logos in the steel rail to allow for water to drain through and not puddle up. Priceless. Speaking of the practice area, 2010 PGA Teacher of the Year and recent West Michigan Golf Show headliner Todd Anderson, a Michigan native now at Sea Island, GA, was busy inside the ropes working with longtime pupil Brandt Snedeker. Snedeker had a strong tournament finishing T-15th thus automatically qualifying for next year’s Masters. *** “For the first time in many, many years,” Payne also announced for the 2012 Masters a “limited number of daily tournament round tickets” will be made available via an online application process. When asked by a reporter what kind of a response he expects for ticket applications and adding (like the famous scene in the movie Dumb and Dumber) if it’s one-in-million odds to land a ticket, Payne quipped: “It’s not a good chance, but it’s a chance.” ============================================================================= BOYNE ADDS NINTH COURSE WITH HIDDEN RIVER GOLF & CASTING MANAGEMENT DEAL ============================================================================= Boyne expanded its northern Michigan golf offerings adding Hidden River Golf & Casting Club of Brutus, Michigan through a new management deal. Hidden River becomes the ninth course in Boynes collection of championship golf courses, which also includes Arthur Hills’ designed Bay Harbor Golf Club and Robert Trent Jones’ The Heather. Bernie Friedrich, Boyne Resorts’ vice president of golf, marketing and retail operations, says Hidden River has been on his radar for the course’s “quality, playability and natural setting along the Maple River.” He adds, “Hidden River complements the Boyne golf experience by providing our guests with another premiere course to play plus creates greater tee time availability and further increases the value of our golf packages and memberships.”
