It was another crummy “spring” day, the usual day for my Old Boys nine-hole golf league on a course I love to hate.

Whew! Got all that?

Mike Hughes, the CEO of the NGCOA (right, lot of initials), wrote that golf really hasn’t changed over the half millennium or so since the Dutch batted iceballs around on frozen canals. I thought that was hockey which Maurice (the Rocket) Richard invented in Quebec but apparently it was golf.

Hughes’ point is that innovation in the way the game itself is played really hasn’t changed from a game “that’s played on large expanses of land where a participant hits a small ball over a relatively long distance with what amounts to a stick with a head on the end.”

Hughes did write that things slowly are beginning to change. He wrote that former NGCOA president Bill Stine, who owns a cluster in central Florida, is going to cut six inch cups at one of his lower-priced courses.

Fantastic! All those blasted putts I keep sliding by the edges just might go in. If they did it on a Tuesday, surprise! I might even like to play the course I love to hate. And, incidentally, my league already plays “winter rules” all summer.

Now, without naming that course, I must admit that Michigan Golf Hall of Famer Bill Zylstra, who keeps getting ranked the best or next best senior amateur golfer in the whole U-S-A, used to work there and holds too many records to count. But one is the course record. A 13-under-par 59. And he's done it twice!

cup to shoot 59 but, (PUT COMMA IN FRONT OF BUT NOT AFTER) why don’t courses try a six inch cup? Once a week? Advertise it? I’d bet it would even get some coverage in the local newspapers, on TV and radio, something that local golf hasn’t gotten in, oh, 15 years at least, as the bigs go for every box score in the bloated major leagues of MLB, NBA, NHL and NFL. I telephoned Bill Stine and he's already cut six inch cups on one of his courses, one that is played by many seniors and women.

“The first reaction was 'Great,'” Stine said. “Then the traditionalists said 'That isn't going to work.'

Then the reaction changed to 'Not too bad.' I tell people who don't like it that we have three other courses they can play with the 4-1/4 inch cup.

“On the second day a guy got a hole-in-one and he asked if it was good. I told him it was good by me,” Stine said, laughing.

“I'm active in the Chamber of Commerce and we're going to do the six inch cups for their outing and they've been advertising it that way. We want to bring seniors, super seniors, women and juniors out to play golf. We'll have it for our Junior School in the summer,” Stine said.

Stine has grown up in golf. His father, Charley, started a golf newspaper in Ohio that printed scores from every league imaginable. Then Charley got a better idea. He figured Florida had more golfers, more courses and more tournaments than anywhere else in the country. In 1975 he started Florida Golfweek. In 1983 he knocked 'Florida' off the name and it became simply Golfweek. It was so successful that he sold it in 1990 to Rance Crain of Orlando-based Turnstile Publications and it is one of the top publications in golf.

How would Bill Stine's six inch cups go over in Michigan?

“I think it's a great idea,” said Bill Fountain, Operating Partner and General Manager of The Majestic in Hartland. Fountain is a past president of the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association and innovative is his middle name.

“Six inch cups aren't for everyone but golf is a social game, everyone likes to have a good time. We need to do things to keep it exciting.

“I've been looking at fund-raisers and putting two cups on every green. They'd putt at whichever one they're closest to. Most people are a 25 handicap and it would speed it up,” Fountain said but it isn't something he would do for regular play.

Paul Beaupre of Plum Brook Golf Club in Sterling Heights is a past president of the Golf Association of Michigan and said “We do everything by the book. We've never done that and wouldn't unless it would be approved by the USGA (United States Golf Association).”

Beaupre said Plum Brook has many leagues and the players get their handicaps based on their scores with the course set up according to the Rules of Golf including that 4-1/4 inch cup.

And how and why is the cup just 4-1/4 inches? According to “The Ultimate Golf Book: A History and a Celebration of the World’s Greatest Game” by Charles McGrath, the answer goes back centuries.

“For hundreds of years,” McGrath wrote, “the size of the cavity had been arbitrary, ranging from three inches to more than five inches in diameter. (At the Old Course, the hole reportedly matched the diameter of a standard St. Andrews drainpipe.) The hole’s depth was even less constant. When a golfer was ready to play his first shot to a new hole, he put his hand in the hole he had just putted into and took a pinch of sand upon which to tee his ball.

“It was not until the nineteenth century that the Scots invented a device to cut uniform holes at Musselburgh in 1829 or at Royal Aberdeen in 1849, depending on which golf historian you believe.”

McGrath wrote that in 1891 the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, rules maker to the world (except to the U.S. and Mexico), “proclaimed with a confident authority reminiscent of the old monarchs, that the hole would henceforth be 4-1/4 inches in diameter and at least 4 inches deep.”

I blame it on that lousy drainpipe. Why couldn’t it have been six inches? ===================================== JACK SELTZER JOINS KENDALL ACADEMY ===================================== One of the state’s most accomplished players and instructors is returning to Michigan to join the awardwinning team at Kendall Academy in Ann Arbor. A past Michigan Open, Michigan PGA and Michigan PGA Match Play champion, Flint native Jack Seltzer will begin teaching at Kendall Academy on May 11, continuing his longtime passion for instruction and “helping golfers get more out of their game.”

After a distinguished career as a player and golf professional in Michigan, Seltzer and his wife Pam moved to Florida in 2005 when Jack became General Manager and head PGA golf professional at Bay Dunes GC in Panama City. “We enjoyed our time at Bay Dunes and met many nice people but we missed our families and friends back in Michigan,” said Seltzer. “After dealing with the economic fallout of the Gulf oil spill and later when the course was sold, it gave us the chance to reevaluate our goals and direction. Finally, we said, ‘let’s go home.’ ” The Seltzers’ son John is the Head PGA Pro at Ann Arbor’s Polo Fields Golf and Country Clubs while their daughter Stacey lives in Chicago. And both sides of Jack’s and Pam’s family reside in Michigan.

Having known Dave Kendall for more than twenty-five years as a colleague in the Michigan PGA Section, it was natural for Seltzer to reach out to the founder of Kendall Academy, a two-time Michigan PGA Teacher of the Year. “When I contacted Dave and told him I was returning to the state and was looking to resume teaching full-time, Dave immediately said: ‘That’s great news. When can you start here?’ ” Kendall sees a bright future ahead for Seltzer as one of ten PGA instructors at the Academy located at Miles of Golf in Ann Arbor along with a new location at Great Lakes Golf Center in Auburn Hills.

“Because of his outstanding playing record, Jack’s teaching expertise isn’t always talked about,” said Kendall. “But Jack is one of the best teachers around, with a sharp eye and keen knowledge of the game. It’s no surprise to me that Jack has worked with 38 high school players who earned All-State honors.” Kendall also lauded Seltzer for his leadership roles with the Michigan PGA including stints as Tournament Committee Chairman and PGA Senior Organization President.

Annually ranked by Golf Digest as one of the top teachers when he was in Michigan, Seltzer sums up his teaching philosophy as: “Finding out what players want out of their game and then developing a

plan to get them there.” Possessing a lively sense of humor, Seltzer tells how one player came to him saying he needed a ‘quick fix’ with his poor driving. “A quick fix? Okay, I told him to throw away his driver and tee it up with a fairway metalwood. The added loft usually results in higher but straighter tee shots,” said Seltzer. “That’s a quick fix but it doesn’t address the swing faults.”

He also likes to compare golf with mathematics. “The short game—putting and chipping—is so critical and basic—it’s like adding and subtracting, especially on the scorecard. Next, iron play is like algebra; it’s the foundation of a good golf swing,” said Seltzer. “And the driver to me is like calculus—all the elements of the swing must be in synch to consistently hit it well.”

Seltzer’s math at the 1987 Michigan Open at The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort was both sound and memorable. His six-under par 72-hole total--the first time anyone recorded an under par Open finish at The Bear—was highlighted by a final round ace at the par-three ninth hole. In fact, it was captured on video by tournament officials and later that evening when picked up by ESPN television it earned iconic status as “The Shot of the Day.” Offering year-round instruction, Kendall Academy is located at Miles of Golf, a comprehensive golf operation offering a retail store, practice and teaching facility, and club-fitting center. By Terry Moore ================================================================================= Al Blondi of The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported last week that Michigan’s Tom Gillis withdrew from The Heritage due to a “stress fracture in his L4 vertebrae.” On Wednesday of tournament week, Gillis—who has earned $563,000 thus far in 2011 on the PGA Tour—told Blondi he “isn’t planning to have surgery but may request a medical extension in the 2012 season” depending on how he finishes the year.

Gillis’s last Tour event was at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando which ended March 27. Since then Gillis has withdrawn from several events.

Michigan’s only other PGA Tour player is Wyandotte’s Justin Hicks who missed the cut at Harbour Town. Two weeks ago at the Texas Open, Hicks finished T-69 and earned $12, 338. So far in 2011, the U-M graduate only has managed to compete in seven events, making the cut four times, while earning $149,749. Hicks is entered this week at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans.

Last week was a notable one not only for The Heritage winner Brandt Snedeker but also for his instructor, former Michigan resident Todd Anderson, the current PGA National Teacher of the Year from Sea Island, Ga. A headliner at this winter’s West Michigan Golf Show in Grand Rapids, Anderson has been Snedeker’s teacher in recent years. He worked with him at the Masters where Snedeker contended and finished T-15, automatically qualifying him for next year’s event. Snedeker also played well and finished fourth in Texas.

Coming up from nearby Sea Island, Anderson rejoined Snedeker at Harbour Town last week and it proved pivotal. After a disappointing third round of one-over par 72 which placed him six shots behind the leader, Snedeker returned to the range under the watchful eye of Anderson. Anderson emailed me this week saying the duo “worked on sequencing Brandt’s backswing to eliminate excess arm swing at the top. Basically we tried to shorten his arm swing while maintaining a full turn.”

And basically it clicked for Snedeker. He went out on Sunday and fired the low round of the day, a seven-under par 64 which vaulted him into a playoff victory over Luke Donald and for his second Tour win. Incidentally and as a positive aside to the earlier Gillis injury report, Snedeker has come back from two separate physical setbacks over the last two years. In 2009, he missed eight weeks on Tour due to a rib injury and late last year he had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.

LOUIS IS NAMED AFTER A GOLFER =============================================================================== Albert Bond Lambert was an Olympic silver medalist golfer in the 1904 Summer Games, a civilian, and the first person to receive a pilot's license in St. Louis. In February 1925, "Major" (his 'rank' was given by the Aero Club and not the military) Lambert, bought the field and added hangars and a passenger terminal. Charles Lindbergh's first piloting job was flying airmail for Robertson Airlines from Lambert Field; he left the airport for New York about a week before his record-breaking flight to Paris in 1927.
