After all, this is a Southern old boys club which seems to belong to an earlier time and an eclipsed sensibility. Why did I catch the fever this year as we made our way to Wednesday’s practice round? *
It’s the only major which returns to the same course every year.
* It’s impossible to get a badge (Augusta National’s term for tickets) for the tournament. One must be on the patron's list which has been closed since 1972. There were waiting lists for short periods of time in 1978 and 2000, but no more. Apply for practice round badges by July 15. You may wait ten years before yours come through. We earned our Wednesday practice round badges by being members in good standing of the Golf Writers Association of America. * The course itself is perfect green carpet. Television cameras can’t do justice to the elevation changes, the undulating greens, the huge, wide fairways. The U.S. Open prides itself on punishing, long rough, but you’ll find no long grass here. Pine trees are tall and much of the “rough” is pine needles. The color scheme is all pink, white and green azaleas, dogwood, and pine. One can see Amen Corner (second shot on 11, 12, and tee shot on 13) all in one glance. Onc can see the pond on 16 that defeated Greg Norman’s six shot lead in 1996. One can see the green on 17 on which Jack Nicklaus’s birdie putt clinched his improbable sixth green jacket. We walked all eighteen holes on a perfect day of temperatures in the sixties and blue sky. * Co-founder Bobby Jones was an amateur golfer himself, so amateur golf champions are always included in the field. University of Michigan’s Lion Kim will play by virtue of having won the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in the summer of 2010. * No tents. Facilities here are permanent, including the luxurious press center with photos of Jack Berry and other presidents of the Golf Writers Association of America on the wall. Immediate past GWAA President, Vartan Kupelian will be the next photo. Facilities for spectators (known as "patrons" P. 2

at Augusta National) are permanent and luxurious, too. Wednesday’s practice rounds were fun. Players were intent, but often smiling and relaxed, several acknowledging fans. Caddies for Vijay Singh, Alvaro Quiros and Sergio Garcia provided the highlight on 16, hitting balls to skip across the pond to the green, our chance to laugh and experience the Augusta roar. Quiros, one of the longest hitters on the tour, with his GQ-cover attire, and movie star smile, gets my vote for best-looking player in the field. Phil Mickelson will wear the green jacket again, but in an even year to go with his 2004, 2006 and 2010 wins. My money is on one of the young guns: Hunter Mahan, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy or Ryan Moore. Whoever is in the hunt on Sunday, we’ll be watching on television with fresh memories of walking Augusta National Golf Club’s eighteen. =============================================================== MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION - THE VARTAN KUPELIAN INTERVIEW =============================================================== Vartan Kupelian, former golf writer for the Detroit News, completed his two year stint as the President of the Golf Writers Association of America at this year's Masters. Soon, his photograph will join the other past presidents of the GWAA on the walls of the Masters Press Center Dining Room. While golf was Kupelian's primary responsiblity at the Detroit News, he spent many of his early years at the paper covering the Red Wings. Jennie McCafferty caught up with Kupelian just after he stepped down from his presidency. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY9cKneh7Go =================================================== MICHIGAN GOLFER MAGAZINE ONLINE SPRING ISSUE http://michigangolfer.com =================================================== Table of Contents Treetops & Shanty Creek Celebrate their 25th Anniversary - Jack Berry Jack Berry, PGA Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award winner tells the tale of these two Michigan golf course icons The New GM's in the Game - Norm Sinclair Sinclair, too long absent from our pages, returns with his thoughts on the ever evolving life of a golf course General Manager. The award was presented following the final round of the Daytona Beach Invitational. The Futures Tour established the Trainor Award in 1999, in honor of its founder and former president, Eloise Trainor, who retired in 1999. In the spirit of Trainor, who operated the tour for 20 years, the annual Trainor Award is presented to an individual or group that has made a significant contribution to women's golf. Accepting the award on behalf of the EWGA was chief executive officer Pam Swensen, who was present Sunday at LPGA International in Daytona Beach to represent the association. "The EWGA’s contributions to women’s golf have been significant,” said Zayra F. Calderon, CEO of the LPGA Futures Tour. “The organization has attracted and impacted women golfers of all ages and skill levels throughout the United States. Many women business executives who would not have ordinarily participated in sports have embraced golf because of the EWGA." Founded in 1991, the tax-exempt association has enabled more than 100,000 women to “learn, play and enjoy golf for business and for fun.” The EWGA boasts more than 120 chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Over the last eight years, EWGA chapters and the EWGA Foundation have donated more than $450,000 to LPGA-USGA Girls Golf – making the EWGA one of the largest single contributors to the program benefiting girls in the sport. “We greatly appreciate this honor from the LPGA Futures Tour,” said Swensen, who has served as the EWGA’s CEO since 2006. “This year marks the 20th anniversary of the EWGA and during that time, our association has enriched the lives of thousands of women through the game of golf. “We serve as a portal for bringing and keeping women involved in the game,” added Swensen. “Our members are good stewards for the sport and we also have a long tradition of giving back, as demonstrated by our ongoing support for the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program.” Taken and edited from a Lisa D. Mickey, LPGA Futures Tour release.
