MSU finished with a four-round total of 28-over par at 1180 (306-290-295-289), while the Boilermakers, also the defending national champions, closed at 33-over 1185 (303-296-294-292). Northwestern finished third at 1187 (308-293-300-286). It marks MSU's first Big Ten title since 2007 and the third of head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll's career, as she won her first conference championship in 2001. MSU's team score of 1180 was the best ever 72hole score in program history at the Big Ten Championships. "It's an awesome feeling and I'm so happy for our team," said Slobodnik-Stoll. "They have sacrificed so much and have worked so hard in the fall and spring. We saw the potential, we knew it was there, but for them to actually pull together as a team when it mattered most was impressive." Entering the final round, MSU held a two-stroke advantage over Purdue, and it kept that margin heading into the back nine on Sunday. At one point, the Spartans fell down by as many as five strokes, but they stormed back in the final four holes, recording four birdies and 12 pars among the four scores that counted out of MSU's six players. During that same four-hole stretch, Purdue shot 4-over par. Junior Lindsey Solberg led the charge for MSU, compiling three straight birdies on holes 15-17 and a par on No. 18 to close out with a 2-under 70. Solberg finished the tournament in fifth place at 6-over 294 (78-75-71-70) and was named to the Big Ten All-Championship Team. She had a team-best six birdies on the day. This year, the Betsie Valley course at Crystal Mountain will have two pin placements on each green; one with a 6 inch cup and one with the traditional 4 ¼ inch cup. I know this is contrary to the rules and traditions of the game but golf needs

to figure out a way to allow people to have more fun while on the course. Of course I realize this won’t work at all golf facilities, but those of us interested in growing the game need to be more engaged figuring out how to do so. All of us know that golf has struggled for quite some time now. Almost every facility has seen rounds decrease. At the same time, the demographics of our players have changed too, resulting in more families and kids trying to enjoy activities together. If golf doesn’t figure out how to get these families into the game, but most importantly KEEP them in the game, participation rates will never get back to “the good ole days”. And if these kids aren’t playing golf today, most likely they won’t be playing golf as adults. That is a scary scenerio. Just look at some of the sports that are thriving today such as skiing and hockey. Their models for teaching kids is very impressive and gets them hooked on those sports. I have seen it first hand as my kids are active in hockey and how our Ski School program at Crystal creates life-long skiers every day. I think golf needs to step outside the box, take a deep breath and figure out how to make this game more enjoyable for everyone. The PGA of America has finally come up with a teaching model in the PGA Sports Academy Junior Golf Program. Kudos to them for doing this! But we can’t stop there. Our governing bodies need to realize that less people are going to play, more courses will close, less golf retail will be sold and fewer lessons will be given if something isn’t done. This is a game I love dearly and am very passionate about, just like all of you! Tradition is great, but times are changing and we need to pull our heads out of the sand and figure this out. “Its perfect for golfers, it’s perfect for corporate meetings because the large common room is set up with high tech wireless and flat screen televisions on the walls that can be used for presentations. The meeting space that can just as easily be used for recreation,” said Terry Schieber, the resort’s chief executive officer. “It’s set up like a miniature hotel with meeting space, and for golfers it can also be a mini sports bar.” Amenities include a fully equipped kitchen, a pool table and poker tables, patio with a hot tub, and two queen size beds in each room. Couples and smaller groups can also reserve rooms. The Lodge is on a private cul-de-sac just past the resort’s Residence Club, which overlooks the 18th fairway. “The response has been very good with some early bookings and the lodge should be a very popular addition to the resort,” Schieber said. Visitors will also appreciate the changes at the Inn at St. Ives where the ground floor has been renovated and now offers a refurbished lobby, a bar, and a small boardroom. The Tullymore course, designed by nationally acclaimed architect Jim Engh of Colorado, has collected numerous awards. It was chosen as best golf resort in Michigan by Golf World magazine, and is ranked No. 15 on Golf Digest magazine’s list of the Top 100 public and resort courses in America. The St. Ives course was designed by Jerry Matthews and won numerous state and national awards when it opened in 1995. The recently refurbished St. Ives clubhouse is a year-round sports bar and restaurant. For more information, visit http://www.tullymoregolf.com. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water. Expensive clubs have been known to be partly made with this most unusual natural alloy. Golf balls never bounce off of trees back into play. If one does, the tree is breaking a law of the universe and should be cut down. All 3-woods are demon-possessed. Your Mother in Law does not come close. Golf balls from the same "sleeve" tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water. The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be. Golf should be given up at least twice per month. All vows taken on a golf course shall be valid only until the sunset. Counting on your opponent to inform you when he breaks a rule is like expecting him to make fun of

his own haircut. Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts. The shortest distance between any two points on a golf course is a straight line that passes directly through the center of a very large tree.
