Since then my cup is running over. Just days after that hit the world wide internet I saw the June issue of Golf Digest, the top-selling golf magazine in the world, and Jaime Diaz reported on a tournament sponsored by Golf Digest at the very proper Pine Needles Resort Lodge & Golf Club in North Carolina where the cups were FIFTEEN inches! Those cups were more than three times the size of the 4-1/4 inch cups prescribed in the Rules of Golf. Digest editor Jerry Tarde is a member at prestigious, exclusive Pine Valley in New Jersey, which Digest consistently ranks the No. 1 course in America, and it was a bit shocking to see his magazine sponsor something called the Golf Digest WIDE Open Championship. Diaz wrote that Kelly Miller, the president of Pine Needles who has won club championships at Pine Valley and Seminole, another of the very, very proper clubs, said “It was like I was a kid again.” Sixty players participated in the WIDE Open which Digest said was an experiment to see if play would be faster and if more beginners would take to golf. Diaz wrote that the outing “was relaxed, fearless, fast and fun.” No sooner had I digested that story than The New York Times had a long story about “Flogton.” That’s Not Golf spelled backwards. It’s the game started by the Alternative Golf Association in Silicon Valley .The founder of Sun Microsystems and the former president of the San Francisco Giants baseball team are the perpetrators. Flogton rules permit tossing onto the green of a ball embedded in a sand trap. Using cooking spray on the face of a driver is permitted – it takes the spin off the ball and makes it go farther. Mulligans? One per hole.

Pat Gallagher, the chief executive of the AGA, said the aim isn’t goofy golf but that “there is a big space for change.” Right from the first column I saw, by Mike Hughes, the chief executive of the Golf Course Owners Association, the goal of all these “variations” on the Rules of Golf is to get more people playing the game. Hook them. And then, after the pieces in Golf Business, Golf Digest and The New York Times, up pops the latest figures from the National Golf Foundation. Participation in golf fell in 2010 for the third straight year, 3.6%, to 26 million golfers. The NGF said the economy is a factor but 3.6 million “new” golfers quit. Rounds played dropped 2.3% to 475 million. Between 2000 and 2005, rounds were 500 million and more. The Golf Digest piece said those 60 players in the WIDE Open had fun and felt that making golf easier for recreational golfers “has a place.” How about the courses you play? As the world’s No. 1 aquaphobe I’d say eliminate all those @#$% water holes. I bet I could’ve gotten a lot of support last week at The Players in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The best players in the world were playing my game – Graeme McDowell, David Toms, Paul Goydos, Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson, Nick Watney, Luke Donald, Angel Cabrera, Matteo Manassero, practically the whole field put at least one ball in the water and some emptied several sleeves. Tiger Woods played only nine holes before withdrawing and he put two balls in the water on the par 4 fourth hole. The island 17th is the most ‘popular’ hole and it swallowed 40 golf balls during the week. FROM THE ridiculous to the sublime: The 2011 Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held at Indianwood G&CC and it was a memorable evening for all those in attendance. Jim Briegel of Ann Arbor, a stalwart in public golf and especially since he became a senior 25 years ago (by the USGA age of 60), saluted his wife of 66 years for letting him out enough to compile a record so strong that his rivals took away his eligibility in the top tournament and instead, named the trophy for him, the Briegel Cup. Arthur Hills, who has designed courses around the world, and fortunately did 23 of them in Michigan, was inducted along with his Michigan State golf teammate Don Perne’. They were reunited again when Perne’ was appointed head professional at Inverness Club in Toledo where Hills was a member. Although Perne’ attained the rank of Master Professional in the PGA, he regards the Professional Golf Management Program at Ferris State University his top achievement. Perne’ said that young people he talked to were torn between the idea of going to college or turning pro. “They said college would take four years and then it would take five years after that to gain PGA membership,” Perne’ said. Working with his Lansing Sexton High School teammate, who’d become president of Ferris, a plan of business courses coupled with internships with PGA professionals around the country, has resulted in a four-year bachelor’s business degree and then a year spent under a PGA

Class A member would result in PGA membership. More than 1,600 PGM students have graduated from Ferris since 1975 and more than 900 of them presently are professionals, serving all over the country. Incidentally, when Perne’ was working toward membership, he needed signatures from two Class A members. He got Horton Smith and Al Watrous. And now he has joined them in the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame. And, in full disclosure, Terry Moore, the other member of the evening’s foursome, has been my best friend for nearly 30 years. It’s impossible to list his qualifications in two or three words. He has more facets than a Tiffany diamond, from editor of Michigan Golfer Magazine when I first met him to founder of the West Michigan Golf Show, golf voice for WOOD radio in Grand Rapids, organizer of a Midwest radio network for five-minute interviews with top names in the game, partner in a TV show on Great Lakes courses, still a contributor as columnist of Michigan Golfer and nationally for The APosition web site and many more. He’s also the best golfer I’ve played with although sometimes his driving and wedge game is just a little off track. =================================================================== BRIEGEL, HILLS, MOORE, PERNE' ENTER MICHIGAN GOLF HALL OF FAME =================================================================== (Lake Orion, Mich.) Former Michigan State University golf teammates Arthur Hills and Don Perné were inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Sunday at Indianwood G&CC along with 85-yearold publinx veteran Jim Briegel and multi-faceted Terry Moore. Hills said he gave up on the idea of being a professional golfer because Perné was five shots better than he was and he'd have better luck working as a golf course architect. Hills has designed more than 225 courses world-wide and earned acclaim as one of the best in the game. Hills was especially busy in Michigan where he earned a bachelor's degree at MSU and a master's in landscape architecture at the University of Michigan. He designed 23 private, public and resort courses in Michigan and also designed a collection of courses in the Naples, Fla., area and The Landings at Skidaway Island in Georgia. Hills pointed out south Florida and Georgia are much warmer in the winter than his Toledo, OH, base. Ironically, Hills eventually wound up on the same “team” with Perné who closed his career as a Master PGA Professional at Inverness Club where Hills is a longtime member. Hills twice worked on remodeling projects on the championship course and also designed the short game practice area. Perné points to the PGA's Professional Golf Management Program as his chief achievement in golf. More than 1,600 young men and women have gone through the five-year program at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., that leads to a business degree and PGA membership. Robert Ewigleben, a high school teammate of Perné’s, was president at Ferris when the program started and Gary Wiren also was instrumental as the PGA's Director of Education. Moore has worn many hats since exchanging a position as a public school administrator for his love of golf. He co-founded Michigan Golfer Magazine and started the West Michigan Golf Show in his P. 6

hometown of Grand Rapids where the mid-winter show annually draws crowds of cabin fever golfers hungry for new equipment, lessons and travel tips. Moore also coordinated two Michigan Golf Summits, started the All About Golf midwest radio show, worked on a television show featuring Great Lakes courses, is a governor of the Golf Association of Michigan, past board member of the Golf Writers Association of Michigan, has covered 28 Masters tournaments and continues to write for the online Michigan Golfer and TheAPosition.com Note: Michigan Golfer Television was on hand for the festivities and we invite you to see the first of our shows on that evening; Terry Moore http://michigangolfer.tv/2011shows/hof_terry_moore Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, 2011 http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/ghf/ Briegel, 85, still is renowned for his long ball and Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member Bill Zylstra, one of the top senior amateur golfers in the country, said “Jim's a horse. He hits it by me and makes me feel bad.” Retired from the publishing industry, Briegel caddied as a youngster at the University of Michigan Golf Course where he now serves as a ranger. He has a 5.8 USGA handicap and won the Michigan Publinx Seniors Golf Association's competition to recognize the best player relative to his age over the full season so regularly that they took him out of competition and named the trophy the Briegel Cup. The cup is a trophy Briegel earned for winning the 70-plus division of the British Senior Open Amateur in 1996. =============================================================== MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION TERRY MOORE: 2011 INDUCTEE TO MICHIGAN GOLF HALL OF FAME =============================================================== Terry Moore http://michigangolfer.tv/2011shows/hof_terry_moore Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, 2011 http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/ghf/ ===================== WE'RE FROM FRANCE ===================== Le Golf National in Versailles near the French capital of Paris will host the 2018 Ryder Cup golf event, it was announced on Tuesday. France edged out rival bids from Spain, Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands to land the tournament, which sees a European team take on the United States. Pascal Grizot, head of the Ryder Cup commission at the French Golf Federation, described the confirmation of Le Golf National as the host venue as a “huge accolade” and “an honour” for France.

“The decision...is a real honour for our country, the French Golf Federation and all the public and private partners who have supported the bid,” said Grizot, according to Sky Sports News. “Above all it is a huge accolade for all French golfers who have contributed to this project.” The 2018 edition will be only the second time in the history of the Ryder Cup that the biennial event has been staged on mainland Europe after the 1997 match, which saw Seve Ballesteros captain Europe to a single-point victory at Valderrama in Spain. Following the death of Ballesteros earlier this month there had been a groundswell of support to hand the 2018 Ryder Cup to his homeland, Spain, in honour of the legendary golfer. However, George O’Grady, the CEO of the European Tour, insisted it was right to award the event to the strongest bid. “I don't think it's a missed opportunity at all in the sense that we've been well aware of the legacy of Severiano Ballesteros right from the beginning of this bidding process,” said O’Grady, who added that France had won by a “clear but narrow margin” in the tender. “Everything we do as a European Tour is to honour him. I don't think this is going to be the last Ryder Cup that will be played in most of our lifetimes, it's just that at the moment the French bid was outstanding.” http://www.sportbusiness.com/news/183633/ryder-cup-to-return-to-mainland-europe-as-france-wins2018-bid-race ====================================== NORTHERN INDIANA GOLF: By Mike Duff ====================================== “Where Golf and Hospitality Meet” is the slogan used to describe the experience one can expect from a two to three day golf adventure in Northern Indiana. Three of us took advantage of this offer and made arrangements with Kimberly Hays, the director of golf, at the Kendallville Best Western Hotel conveniently located in NE Indiana near I-69 and 1-80/90 toll roads. The Best Western is a very good place to stay. It is clean, well kept and its cozy bar offers a lot of good cheer and friendly atmosphere. What you will experience is good service, friendly people and outstanding golf. I am part of a standing four-some which tries to choose a golf destination somewhere south of Michigan in early April or May to avoid the early spring bad weather. This year we found just the right location: three hours from Detroit, four hours from Chicago and only a chip shot from Lansing and Grand Rapids. We found this golf package through the Novi Golf Show and would recommend taking the time to check it out. The golf packages can be customized to meet your group’s personal needs. All the packages include a complimentary deluxe breakfast buffet, golf and your choice of six 4-star (Golf Digest) golf courses and lodging. Our package was for two nights and 45 holes of golf with cart, for $159. The six courses to choose from are Noble Hawk, Cobblestone, Glendarin Hills, Bridgewater, Autumn Ridge and Cherry Hill. Two of the courses, Autumn Ridge and Cherry Hill are located in Fort Wayne about 25 minutes from Kendallville. Glendarin Hills is in Angola. All of these courses are an easy drive from the hotel. During our stay, we played Noble Hawk and Cobblestone and were scheduled to play 9 holes at Glendarin on our way home on Sunday but weather conditions did not allow us the opportunity. However, we were credited for that cost which is a nice way the management handled this situation.

If Noble Hawk and Cobblestone are any indication of how good the other courses are in this package then you can be assured that your time spent here will be well worth the drive. Rick Hulett and his wife Cristine from Noble Hawk made us feel right at home. They were eager to share the special features of this “Scottish” style golf course. The course features gently rolling bent grass fairways, large undulating greens with plenty of sand and water in combination with natural ornamental grasses. The course is in a housing development but the homes do not impinge on the course. There are 5 tees to choose from and the yardage is suited to every level of play. It is a beautifully designed Scottish links course. We played Cobblestone, a more traditional style course, on Saturday and again were impressed with the design and condition. In 1999, just after Cobblestone opened it was rated by Golf Digest as the 8th best new course that year and “Places to Play” in 2002-2003. Jeff Huffman, the Director of Operations, was extremely proud of the course and the reviews it has received over the past ten years. It is not an exceptionally long course but the fairways allow for generous layups and the condition of the course was excellent. As previously mentioned, we did not have a chance to play Glendarin Hills but after talking with Matt Funkhouser, Head Professional, we were able to put together a picture of what this course looked like and how it could be played. We learned that both nines offer a variety of open and tree lined holes. Driving past the tenth and eleventh holes on the way to the club house reminded us of a Scottish links design and Matt pointed out that the course has a nice balance of trees and bunkers and rolling terrain. We realized on our way home that Glendarin was something special and we regretted not having the opportunity to play it. All the more reason to return. We all agreed that we haven’t seen enough of this golf destination and vowed to plan another trip to NE Indiana. So, if you are looking for a golf experience that gives you outstanding golf, with excellent lodging at affordable prices within a reasonable driving distance. Then go for it! To take advantage of this great offer, contact Kim Hays at greatindianagolf@gmail.com or 260.347.5263. You will not be disappointed. ========================================================= GOLFWEEK'S 2011 BEST COURSES YOU CAN PLAY - MICHIGAN ========================================================= 1.) ============================== MINZEY'S MUSINGS: WILL ROGERS ============================== Will Rogers, who died in a 1935 plane crash, was one of the greatest political sages this country has ever known. Enjoy the following: 1. Never slap a man who's chewing tobacco. 2. Never kick a cow chip on a hot day. 3. There are two theories to arguing with a woman. Neither works. 4. Never miss a good chance to shut up. 5. Always drink upstream from the herd. 6. If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. 7. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put it back into your pocket. 8. There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves. 9. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment. 10. If you're riding' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there. 11. Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin' it back. 12. After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him. The moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut. ABOUT GROWING OLDER... First ~Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. Second ~ The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for. Third ~ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me; I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved. Fourth ~ When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, think of Algebra. Fifth ~ You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks. Sixth ~ I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top. Seventh ~ One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it's such a nice change from being young. Eighth ~ One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been. Ninth ~ Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable. Tenth ~ Long ago, when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today it's called golf. And, finally ~ If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have anything to laugh at when you're old. ====================================================== GRAND TRAVERSE RESORT & SPA TAKES IT TO THE STREET ====================================================== Having a successful business in the 21st century requires both social media interaction and real life interaction.
