I covered it for the Free Press and it was typical Washington summer weather – 100 degree heat and seemingly comparable humidity. That's why the summer uniform of those who worked in the nation's capital was a sweat-sucking seersucker suit. Thank the Almighty, the press room was air-conditioned. Outside it was a Swedish massage and Ken Venturi, after a morning 4-under-par 66, was so overheated a doctor told him he could kill himself if he played the second round. But Venturi played on, swallowing salt pills all the way and staggered to the finish with a 70 to beat Tommy Jacobs by four shots. How times have changed. Salt pill overloads are a disaster and water is a must. Another big change is the way the majors are covered now. Television. All 18 holes. Not back then. Reporters battled the heat too plus the galleryites who commented (a kindly but exaggerated word) about the reporters being inside the gallery rope and occasionally blocking their view. Now the writers, and that's the large majority, stay in the media center and watch the TV coverage, hole by hole, replay by replay. Two other things stick out about that Open. Venturi's wife at the time, Conni, was a blackhaired absolute beauty and she accompanied Venturi to his press room interviews. A definite highlight from our side. Then there was Windsor free spirit Bob Panasiuk, a solid player but never a contender for a big payday. Panasiuk was paired with Dan Sikes for Saturday's 36-hole slog through the hellish weather. Sikes, never known as the most genial player, flew an afternoon shot into the same bunker he'd found in the morning round. “I told him 'Well, Dan, you'll know how to play that shot.' I thought he was going to take my head off,” Panasiuk said. Panasiuk, who grew up working on his parents' golf course, played both the American and Canadian tours and dropped the 'u' from his name because it so often appeared as Panasik in print. And the USGA dropped the 36 hole finish prior to the 1965 Open at Bellerive CC in St. Louis. Venturi's near-collapse definitely was a factor but perhaps an even bigger one was television which

wanted four days of championship play with the final on Sunday. Ironically, South African Gary Player and Australian Kel Nagle, who beat Arnold Palmer for the 1960 British Open title, ended in a tie on Sunday and needed an 18 hole playoff on Sunday. Nagle, unfortunately, hooked twice, practically from the open shot and hit galleryites. He made the mistake of going over to see the bleeding victims and that was the end of the day for him. Player was five shots ahead by the eighth hole and won, 71-74. Venturi missed the cut at Bellerive and never played another Open. He was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists at the end of 1964 and eventually underwent surgery. His game never was the same. Fortunately in later years Venturi became part of Frank Chirkinian's CBS golf crew, along with Pat Summerall, Ben Wright and Bob Drum. No one had more fun. HOW PAIR THEY? A regular formula, based on performance, is used by the PGA Tour for its weekly tournaments. But the United States Golf Association makes a game of it and usually it's entertaining for the players as well as the fans. The first two rounds at Congressional included threesomes of Asians, Swedes, Spaniards, Italians, Quiet Guys, Double bogey, excitement prone and wild color. They are: Ryo Ishikawa, Y.E. Yang and Anthony Kim; Fredrik Jacobson, Johan Edfords and Henrik Stenson; Miquel Angel Jimenez, Sergio Garcia and Alvaro Quiros; and Francesco Molinari, Edoardo Molinari and Matteo Manassero. The three most recent World No. 1 players are Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer; the three anything-can-happen are Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson; the wild colors are Rickie Fowler, Ian Poulter and Hunter Mahan with industrial-size sunglasses and the Shhhh, quiet guys are Steve Stricker, Retief Goosen and David Toms. There's the traditional group of defending champion, U.S. Amateur champion and British Open champion – Graeme McDowell, Peter Uihlein and Louis Oosthuizen. One thing you won't find, unfortunately, is anyone from Michigan. Or three time champion Tiger Woods, tending ========================================= MILITARY QUALIFIER FOR MICHIGAN OPEN ========================================= This past Monday Selfridge Golf Club hosted a Military only qualifier for the Michigan Open Championship presented by Lincoln / DTE Energy. While it’s not quite as bad on the consumer front as it is on the supply/demand and economic health of the average facility side, the continued decline in golfers, frequency and involvement levels in 2010 has to be reversed in order for the industry to return to sustainable growth. Following Pellucid’s industry-standard scorecard of key golf consumer base health measures I presented to the OTR subscribers last year, below are the toplines to the 2010 performance vs. 2009 which we’ll treat in more detail in the body of this issue: Golfer base size and participation rate – The golfer base again declined slightly in number of golfers

P. 12

which, coupled with a slight increase in population, also produced a decline in the participation rate. Demand and frequency – Consumers finally caught up with the reality being captured in the facilityreported rounds and told us they played fewer rounds in 2010. The reported percent decline in rounds was greater than the percent loss in golfers which means that frequency (rds/golfer/yr) also suffered a slight decline. Involvement – Unlike last year, when the Committeds held steady in numbers against declines in the Casuals and Involveds, in 2010 we saw a true downward migration of involvement with Committeds (40+ rds/yr) and Involveds (10-39 rds/yr) declining in number while Casuals (1-9 rds/yr) grew. Play Rate – The composite measure of rounds per capita per year finished slightly down as the result of slight declines in both participation and frequency. For the “glass half full” crowd, the losses we’re seeing are less than 1M golfers a year and the participation and frequency drops are less than full points/rounds. For the “glass half empty” crowd, if you’re not growing then you’re at the mercy of time and the relative attraction of other leisure activities to decide what comes next and whether we hold at 26M golfers or next threaten 25M (the golfer base in 1991 by the way). Only a sheep and a sheepdog were washed up with him. After looking around, he realized that they were stranded on a deserted island. After being there a while, he got into the habit of taking his two animal companions to the beach every evening to watch the sun set.

One particular evening, the sky was a fiery red with beautiful cirrus clouds, the breeze was warm and gentle, a perfect night for romance. As they sat there, the sheep started looking better and better to the lonely man. Soon, he leaned over to the sheep and put his arm around it. But the sheepdog, ever protective of the sheep, growled fiercely until the man took his arm from around the sheep. After that, the three of them continued to enjoy the sunsets together, but there was no more cuddling. A few weeks passed by and, lo and behold, there was another shipwreck. The only survivor was Hillary Clinton. That evening, the man introduced Hilary to the evening beach ritual. It was another beautiful evening - red sky, cirrus clouds, a warm and gentle breeze - perfect for a night of romance. Pretty soon, the man started to get "those feelings" again.. He fought the urges as long as he could, but he finally gave in and leaned over to Hillary, cautiously, and whispered in her ear... "Would you mind taking the dog for a walk?" ============================================================== MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION CHANNEL -- 2011 SHOWS http://michigangolfer.tv/archives.html ============================================================== **************************** NOW PLAYING *************************** Terry Moore Interview with Jennie McCafferty Terry Moore - Michigan Golf Hall of Fame - Class of 2010 Art Hills - Michigan Golf Hall of Fame - Class of 2010 Don Perne' - Michigan Golf Hall of Fame - Class of 2010 Jim Briegel - Michigan Golf Hall of Fame - Class of 2010 Vartan Kupelian and his Golf Writer's Association of America Presidency Practice Makes Perfect - Photography by Jennie McCafferty The Sundance Course at A-Ga-Ming: Narrated by Jerry Matthews Antrim Dells Becomes an A-Ga-Ming Property: Mike Brown Interviewed It Started with Chick Harbert: The Torch Course at A-Ga-Ming Antrim Dells GC: Narrated by Jerry Matthews Bucks Run Golf Club with Jon Conklin Arcadia Bluffs - A Top Stay and Play Experience Jason Guss Golf Academy Boyne Golf Schools and Boyne Golf Academy at King Par Tullymore Has New Leadership with the Returning Terry Schieber The Michigan Cup - Top Jr. Golfers Battle it out Ryder Cup Style Kevin O'Brien Joins True North Team 25th Anniversary Preview of the Jones Masterpiece at Treetops with Kevin McKinley and Jack Berry 25th Anniversary Preview of The Legend at Shanty Creek Resort with Brian Kautz and Jack Berry 100th Anniversary Preview of the Michigan Amateur with David Graham and Jack Berry Boyne's Tournament Season and Golf Packages with Jeff Ecceleston and Jack Berry Brian O'Neill's Quick Golf Tips LochenHeath is Back and Basking with Mike Husby and Jack Berry LPGA Futures Tour - Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass with Dave Douglas and Jack Berry Railside Golf Club @ Byron Center - Club Membership on the Rise with Jim Bultema and Jack Berry
