Michigan Golfer Magazine Past Issues http://michigangolfer.com/#pastissues Michigan Golfer Television http://michigangolfer.tv Editor: Art McCafferty Associate Editor - Jennie McCafferty ============================================================= IMPRESSIONS OF THE 100TH MICHIGAN AMATEUR: By Terry Moore ============================================================= The 100th Michigan Amateur contested at The Heather at Boyne Highlands delivered history-making golf as Flint’s Willie Mack III became the first African-American to win the state’s oldest golf championship. Mack defeated defending champion and local favorite Joey Garber, playing on his home course, 4 & 3 in the 18-hole finals match. Although I wasn’t there for the finals, I did manage to follow Mack earlier in the week including a 21-hole victory that ended in the dark. A recent graduate of Bethune-Cookman University in Fla., Mack possesses an impressive game. Earlier this spring, he shocked west siders when he won the West Michigan Amateur at Candlestone GC by birdieing two of the last three holes to erase a three-shot deficit to Tom Werkmeister, Grand Rapids’ premier player, claiming the crown in his first attempt. (To boost the field, tournament officials this year allowed entries from across the state.) Only 5’8” tall and weighing 150 pounds, Mack generates plenty of clubhead speed and length with a powerful whip-like swing mindful of Rickie Fowler. And like Fowler, he’s an exceptional putter. Watching him compete in several matches at Boyne, I was most impressed with his accelerating and aggressive stroke, almost always getting his misses past the hole in the preferred Dave Pelz range of 18 inches. His putting routine is consistent and he’s never careless with his short putts. In the 21-hole match on Thursday, Mack made consecutive three-foot comebackers to halve the holes before ending the match at 10 p.m. with a 30-foot birdie that rattled the back of the cup. I also liked the pace of Mack’s play; he’s ready to hit and gets at it when he’s away. This is refreshing in an era when the stakes of college golf have added excessive pre-shot routines and too much deliberation. But Mack’s best quality, and one that will arm him well for the rigors of professional and mini-tour play, is his laser-like focus and intensity level. He’s totally into the moment and the shot at hand. It will be this aspect of his game, and not mechanics, that bodes well for Willie Mack III. ***** Now for some other thoughts and impressions of the Michigan Amateur conducted by the Golf Association of Michgan: · I walked away with renewed appreciation for The Heather, the Robert Trent Jones-designed gem that helped spark the rise of resort golf in northern Michigan. First, it’s a walkable course ideal for the Amateur and match play. (I like how Boyne allows walking and even arranges caddies at The Heather for its guests.) Greens and tees are close to one another and the terrain is generally flat. Secondly, the course was in fine condition throughout and it held up well in spite of all of the rain that beset the

championship. Checking out several bunkers I didn’t notice any stones—a common pitfall of northern Michigan courses. And of course, the Boyne Highlands setting is hard to match even in the most unfavorable weather. · How did spitting on the green and on the course become a fashionable “tic” among young players? Was it Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods, serial spitters both, who helped spread this nasty habit? I observed at least three players in the Amateur spitting on the green after they holed out. It’s a nervous, thoughtless habit and one many players probably aren’t aware they’re even doing. But it’s something that should be nipped in the bud by parents and coaches alike. I’d even like to see “no spitting” reminders placed on first-tee rules sheet and/or pin placements. · Kudos to the many volunteers who turned out for the 100th Michigan Amateur. Boyne did an incredible job of recruiting an enthusiastic army of spotters who made a huge difference in the pace of play by quickly locating balls in the rough, which was a healthy and ball-hiding four inches deep. · In the category of “be careful of your on-course braggadocio” I got a kick out of one young player who after a tap-in birdie on one hole and then a prodigious long drive on the next tee shot, turned to his caddie and boasted, “Man, I’m putting on a ball-striking clinic!” What happened next? On the ensuing six holes, the said player failed to find the fairway with any of his drives while incurring an out of bounds tee shot on one hole and an embarrassing tree-stopping 100-yard drive on a par-five. The player, true to the lessons of fable, lost the match. Sweet 16 matches: Matthew Thompson, Battle Creek def. Payne Gniewek, Trenton 21 Holes Matt Ostby, Midland def. ================================================================================= THE GLSP YOU TUBE CHANNEL JUST LOGGED IN ITS 1,000,000TH VIEWER -- THANKS A MILLION! ================================================================================= in the spring of 2007, we got a call from our Internet Service Provider, telling us that two of their servers had a melt down ant that they lost all of our Michigan Runner videos, which totaled over 500 shows at the time. In addition, the server melt down also lost 60 issues or 10 years of our Michigan Runner Online magazine. It was, as you can imagine, horrific news. Fortunately, we had copies of many of the videos and after about two months of work on the site, we were able to replace many of the shows, but none of the Michigan Runner online copies. Looking for an additional online back up system, we looked at the emerging You Tube platform and decided to create an additional copy of our each of our shows and place it on You Tube.. We began this plan on May 5, 2007. This week we attracted our one millionth You Tube viewer and wanted to mark this milestone with a thank you to our viewers. While a million viewers is certainly an impressive number, GLSP is no stranger to that figure. Michigan Golfer Television and Michigan Runner Television had begun to average that in 2005. However, when we changed to a new statistical software package in 2008, our numbers were cut in half. The new software screened out spiders and robot visitors, from all the search engines and we were back to square one. or half of square one. Since then, those numbers are beginning to once again, approach the million viewer figure annually, The simplicity of the You Tube statistical software is a real bonus for producer/publishers, in that ,they need to communicate numbers to clients and advertisers.. When a viewer views a show, it is recorded as such on You Tube. You only need to point a client to the video and they can see the numbers themselves. Another advantage of You Tube, is that everyone has heard of it. And, if your parent company is Google, you really do not have to worry about people finding your video. You Tube also allows you to create communities of video for your clients. For example, if we drop in the work "Treetops'" in our search engine, the software creates a url http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?pi=0&ps=100&sf=added&sa=0&sq=treetops&dm=0 and presto, you have 73 videos that you can view. Or on the running side you can type in "Grand Rapids Marathon" http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?pi=0&ps=100&sf=added&sa=0&sq=grand%20rapids%20marath on&dm=0 and you can bring up 12 shows. Again, we use You Tube as backup, you can assemble a similar community on our own servers at http://glsp.com/treetops or http://michiganrunner.tv/2010grandrapidsmarathon/ Finally, You Tube has software that makes sure you have not violated a copyright. Management Group, came after us one time for our use of the Ryder Cup image. While we were mystified at their claim, we quickly took down the offending video and then sent them an email questioning their action. They never answered and we let it go. Of late, they have caught us a couple of times using music that was being performed by a live band. This was never a problem before, but then again, their software is getting very sophisticated. To make sure we do not violate music copyright, we have identified some composers who are in the process of trying to make it big and have contracted out their music. Our 1760 videos on You Tube, represent an average of a video a day, since we started in May of 2007. Of those shows , there are a number to note: 1- Our 2008 Olympic Trials coverage garnered over 100,000 viewers. 2- The Snowcross races at the Otsego Club drew more than 8,300 viewers. 3 - Our show on the Michaywe Golf Course , narrated by architect, Don Childs, has been viewed by over 6,310 people. 4- The Flying Wallendas show, captured at Ypsilanti's Heritage Festival, has attracted 18,206 viewers thus far. 5- Over 38,000 people have seen our video, "John Daly Grips it and Rips it at Niagara Falls." 6- 20,000 people viewed the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. 7- Our shortest video was of the Owosso Train Festival at 1:34, shot from an iphone and put up online in less than five minutes, and our longest was the USATF Masters National 10K Championship Awards Ceremony, clocking in last week at a little over 25 minutes. That show featured the work of four cameras and two days of editing. Incidentally, the You Tube channel administration, has allowed our company to post video beyond the normal 15 minute standard for producers. We feel honored and challenged and will continue to develop our video products with the time restraint lifted. 8. Since 2007, our team has produced shows on five continents. The shows have included the Summer Beijing Olympics, The Winter Vancouver Olympics, South Africa's Comrades Marathon, The Antarctic Marathon, The Great Wall Marathon, two Ryder Cups, The Masters, The PGA Championships, The IAAF World Championships and just last week, we participated and reported on the Liechtenstein Alpine Marathon 9- Our You Tube programming represents the produce of our seven channels; Michigan Runner Television, Running Canada Television, The Running Network Television Show, The Michigan Skier Television Show and The Michigan Golfer Television Show., The Michigan Travel Television Show and a GLSP family channel, where we are chronicling the history of our families. 10- Again, to all of you that have watched one of our shows, Thanks a Million. The GLSP Team http://glsp.com ======================================= BRIAN O'NEILL AND THE NIKE GOLF CAMP ======================================= Our last get together with Brian O'Neill was at the Michigan Golf Show where we put together a series of eight Quick Tips on instruction http://michigangolfer.tv/2011shows/boyne_oneill/ . The shows drew a lot of viewer attention. With that in mind we thought we would drop by his Nike Golf Camp and catch some of the action. Enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ngr7fYtqlNI

======================================= MINZEY'S MUSINGS: THOUGHTS FOR TODAY ======================================= A penny saved is a government oversight. The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement. He who hesitates is probably right. Did you ever notice: The Roman Numerals for forty (40) are XL? If you can smile when things go wrong, you have someone in mind to blame. The sole purpose of a child's middle name is so he can tell when he's really in trouble. Did you ever notice: When you put the 2 words 'The' and 'IRS' together it spells 'Theirs...'? Aging: Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to your youth, think of Algebra. You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks. The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends. ======================================================= DEVINE THOUGHTS: YOUNG RORY ON YOU TUBE - New Link ======================================================= Last week, Ken Devine sen us an address to catch the young Rory on a Irish tv show hitting golf balls into a washing machine.
