It was all of that at Sandwich for the Open Championship. It was wind that stretched the flags and held them as if they were starched. It was driving rain coming sideways. Finger-numbing cold and then sun-screen-required pure blue skies. I loved it all on my new HDTV as I joined the 21st Century. I covered four Opens, two at the Old Course won by Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo, and two at Muirfield, won by Lee Trevino and Tom Watson, and never had weather anywhere near what they've had the last few years. It was appropriate then that a Northern Irishman, Darren Clarke, who glories in foul weather and whose home course is Royal Portrush, right on the North Atlantic Ocean, should conquer the weather and the field with three subpar rounds and one at par. He loved every minute of that mixed bag. Oddly enough, two of his younger countrymen, who won the last two United States Opens without full P. 4

rain gear, didn't appreciate it at all. Graeme McDowell missed the cut and Rory McIlroy said he missed America's 80 degree weather and manicured courses. Could that have been the stand up and take it, freckle face, mop haired kid who behaved so unbelievably strong after blowing the Masters Tournament on the last nine holes? It was and he's sure to regret it as Clarke, his boyhood hero, owned up to some of his earlier actions. Borrowing a line from the late radio host Paul Harvey, here's The Other Side of the Story: Two Northern Irish friends of mine, one a journalist and one a media relations person, didn't find Clarke being The Smiling Irishman. “He was not my favourite, arising from a brush with him at the Masters years ago,” one said, while welcoming Clarke's victory Sunday as another boost for Northern Ireland golf. The media person was in the business of promoting Irish golf and was treated rudely. Times have changed. On Monday the London-based Guardian newspaper wrote that Clarke, post allnight celebrating, looked fulfilled – a changed man. "I used to give myself airs and graces when I was younger," he said in the glow of victory. "I have to admit I was a prat. I was rude to people if I'd had a bad round, and it wasn't right. But I like to think I have learned from my mistakes.” Now the mature, gray-hired Champion Golfer will pass on some attitude advice to 22-year-old McIlroy who he mentored in the past. A PORTRUSH OPEN? That was the buzz after the small province of Ulster saluted its third major champion in 13 months. Take that Scotland and England and Wales! “Portrush is a wonderful course,” said Peter Dawson, executive officer of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews who promised the R&A would take a look at it. “It's a big strong course.” It's also the only course outside Scotland and England to hold an Open. That was way back in 1951. To its credit, it hosted the British Senior Open six times, starting in 1995, and champions include Gary Player, Christy O'Connor Jr., and Brian Barnes. But they didn't draw the kind of crowds the Open does – more than 180,000 last week. “An Open is not just the golf course,” Dawson said. “It's about the infrastructure, the hotels, the roads, is there room for the tented village and so? We're not stupid at the R&A. We do hear the emotion. We hear the pressure and we are ready to take a look at it.” My journalist friend, who belongs to two clubs and has a slap shot swing perfect for the gales, said the Open going to Portrush or Royal Co. Down “doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell. Leaving aside all the logistical issues, would you risk scheduling a major sporting event in Northern Ireland at least five years in advance?” Portrush is a lovely small town, with typically small hotels and B&B's lining the coast. Belfast, the biggest city in Northern Ireland, is two hours away. The elephant in the room is the month of July, a major holiday month in Northern Ireland and it's the

parading season which raises the tempers of the two sides that turned Northern Ireland into a war zone for decades, the Troubles. Bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, beatings, arson. The official holiday is the 12th, the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne when Protestant William of Orange defeated the Catholic king, James II, in 1690. You think the Israelis and Palestinians have been going at it for a long time? And there was some rioting and burning last week although far from what it was in the past. Portrush will get a look from the R&A but I wouldn't bet on it winning. While golf is big in Ireland and, to me, the best links courses in the world, commercial sponsoring it isn't as big. The Irish Open doesn't have a sponsor this year. Padraig Harrington has been working on it and was quoted as saying he thinks they'll have a sponsor next year. So this year Tourism Ireland, the government, is sponsor. The Irish Open is held in the Republic and has been played on good courses – Killarney Golf & Fishing Club this year – Adare Manor, Co. Louth, and Portmarnock among them. But the purse is far less than most European Tour purses. SHORT STUFF: McIlroy, 5-foot-9, dropped his childhood girl friend and now is 'friendly' with 5-foot10 blond Caroline Wozniacki, 21, Denmark's World No. 1 in tennis. They met July 2 at the heavyweight championship fight in Hamburg. Great YouTube hit is Miquel Angel Jimenez's flexibility drill on the range. He's my second favorite Spaniard (Penelope Cruz is far and away No. 1) and I liked that Mike Tirico called him The World's Most Interesting Golfer. I borrowed that line from Dos Equis last month and made him the World's Most Interesting Person. Stay Thirsty my friend. Didn't hear much about World No. 1 and World No. 2 after Luke Donald and Lee Westwood missed the cut. And so much for winning the week before a major. Donald's out and Steve Stricker never contended. Rickie Fowler did what he hadn't done in previous big events – did not make a double bogey. He outplayed McIlroy in the three rounds they were together including their worst weather days. Now if he can just build on that. I think he's much more into the game than Dustin Johnson, who the magazine writers love, and Anthony Kim who may still be feeling the effects of his thumb surgery last year. McIlroy meanwhile had two double bogeys, one of them going out of bounds on the 14th, the hole that ended Johnson's chance on Sunday. Johnson has a knack for losing in the majors. McIlroy was a winner for the R&A in one important aspect. After he won the Open at Congressional, ticket sales shot up 20% for Royal St. George's. I thought ESPN did a terrific job on the telecast. I think Tirico is the best and I like the supporting cast, especially Paul Azinger and Curtis Strange. ESPN put together, in a hurry, a nice highlights package including Clarke's many facial expressions, for Rick Reilly's closing piece. Too bad ESPN only does one major but it does the most telegenic one. And it's so good on HDTV.

OAKLAND HILLS is back in line for another United States Open. The club will sponsor the 2016 U.S. Amateur and it marks the club's centenary. It also is a stepping stone to hosting the Open and right now that's booked to 2019. Some at Oakland Hills wanted to have the 2016 Open but when that conversation was going on, the economy nose-dived, especially the automotive industry and one guess as to how many OHCC members are in that business. Oakland Hills always has balanced its relationships with golf's two major organizations, the U.S. Golf Association and the PGA of America. It has hosted a PGA Championship, won by Padraig Harrington, and the Ryder Cup since its last Open in 1996. It did host the 2002 U.S. Amateur with Ricky Barnes beating Hunter Mahan in the final. ====================================================== ON THE ROAD IN NORTHWEST MICHIGAN: By Terry Moore ====================================================== After visiting Manitou Passage Golf Club in Cedar last week I’m happy to report it continues to improve as an attractive golf option for visitors to northwest Michigan. As you may recall, Manitou Passage is the old King’s Challenge designed by Arnold Palmer which opened in 1997. It was a playable layout, a lasting trademark of Palmer design, but never given the proper marketing support by its then owners. Mirroring the troubles of nearby Sugarloaf Resort, the course went into a downward spiral for a number of years and its conditioning was sadly neglected. Thankfully, a group of investors headed by The Homestead’s Bob Kuras bought the property two years ago and last summer it reopened as Manitou Passage. A host of improvements were made to the course in terms of tees and bunkers and course maintenance. The clubhouse was also handsomely redecorated and accented with many excellent Palmer photos. Attending the Media Day last summer, I was glad to see the course in capable hands. The tie-in to The Homestead, a first-class resort and residential community, always made sense to me. Unfortunately on June 5 at Manitou Passage there was a fire in the pump house for the irrigation system. Starting as a mechanical fire, the pump house burned to the ground and left the course without water for five days until a temporary pump was installed. Without any significant rainfall, the course took it on the chin with some burn-out areas. But stuff happens and overall the conditioning is still fine. The new pump was being installed the day we played so everything is now back to normal. With friends in Glen Arbor, I’m very pleased with the progress seen with Manitou Passage. It’s a solid, eye-pleasing golf course with accommodating open-approaches to the greens and no watery cross hazards. The par-five eighth hole with its elevated tee and a majestic view out to Manitou Island remains a delight. Suggestion: mount some naval or vintage coin-operated binoculars at this tee and let golfers enjoy the sights. As shared by my playing partners it would be nice to see some of the dense fescue cut back and thinned out in the rough. Currently on many holes, particularly on holes no. 5-6, the rough is so thick, penal and gnarly it’s an automatic lost ball. Not only too penal it also slows play. ‘Player friendly’ should be the watchwords going forward. But maybe this is another work-in-progress item that will be addressed in the future. Again, there’s much to like and to enjoy at Manitou Passage. It doesn’t take binoculars to see it’s on the right course. Visit http://www.manitoupassagegolfclub.com P. 10

====================================================== AT OAKLAND HILLS, THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT: By Tom Cleary ====================================================== (Birmingham, Michigan)----It wasn’t all that long ago some clever soul at the United States Golf Association figured out the linkage that would help amateur golfers visit the clubs where their presence wasn’t exactly welcomed like returning war heroes. The USGA simply required an unspoken agreement with clubs hoping to host the U.S. Open to first (or at some point) take on the U.S. Amateur championship. It was a move that helped the latter tremendously without damaging the former. Actually, you could hardly blame the USGA for using its leverage to gently pry open the doors for amateurs at some places that only coveted the Open. But the arrangement has proved valuable for other reasons. Because now some top clubs no longer view hosting the U.S. Amateur the way they regard the return home of sons and daughters from college each summer. A case in point is Oakland Hills. After a long history of hosting the U.S. Open and PGA Championship, the clubs shifted gears a decade ago and took on the 2002 Amateur. And despite some anxiety, the event was an unqualified success. Maybe not the moneymaker or publicity machine past major championships had been, but a tournament members could get their arms around and hug. USGA championships for amateur golfers are decidedly less haughty and restrictive as any of the Open championships; fans and patrons can get up close and even walk the fairways with the competitors. It’s a throwback to the days of spectator civility and it’s becoming popular here in Michigan and elsewhere. Not only were fans in 2002 treated to a Ricky Barnes-Hunter Mahan match-play final, they also got an eyeful from future PGA TOUR stars like Camilo Villegas, Kevin Stadler, Bill Haas, Anthony Kim and D.J. Trahan. And even though most of the week was spent out of the view of the national media, nobody seemed to mind watching the generation that was about to follow the likes of Woods, Mickelson, Els and Furyk. Oakland Hills’ Club President Terry Donnelly was among those at the news conference announcing the club’s successful bid to host the 2016 U.S. Amateur and talked excitedly about the experience of 2002. “My wife and I walked the 35 holes of the final with Barnes and Mahan,” he said. “We saw Hunter make that eagle after a 3-iron shot (his approach on the 30th hole), and it’s something I will never forget.” At the July 20 news conference, the USGA’s Tom O’Toole emphatically made the point Oakland Hills hasn’t been promised anything (like, say, the 2020 U.S.Open) as a result of its bid to host the 2016 U.S. Amateur. And at the same time, he acknowledged the fondness the USGA has for Michigan’s bestknown club, ticking off the names of the legendary players who have won at Oakland Hills in the past: Hogan, Palmer and Nicklaus among them. From his statement, it was easy to infer the Open will be returning to Michigan some time in the next decade. But that’s not to say the members at Oakland Hills are looking past 2016. When asked about the reaction of membership to 2002 Amateur, Donnelly said he was certain most members “ranked it right up there at the top of the list of the best championships we’ve hosted.” Not a word was said at Oakland Hills about unruly crowds, obtrusive television coverage or costly

tickets. The U.S. Amateur-as well as events like the U.S. Junior Amateur, held in 2010 at Egypt Valley near Grand Rapids-are as family friendly as it gets. There’s not much for a club in the way of financial gain, but there’s less opportunity, too, for monetary pain. And considering the quality of the golf played now the highest levels of the amateur game, it’s an opportunity to witness the stars of tomorrow as they begin their ascent. Ten years ago, Oakland Hills might’ve had a little trepidation about a visit from 312 mostly teenage and college golfers. In 2016 they’ll greet the new version of that group with (U.S.) open arms. ================================================================================ OAKLAND HILLS COUNTRY CLUB SELECTED AS SITE OF 2016 U.S. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP ================================================================================= Oakland Hills Country Clubhas been selected by the United States Golf Association as the site of the 2016 U.S. Amateur Championship. The dates of the championship are Aug. 15-21, 2016. The North and South Courses will be used for stroke-play qualifying and the South Course will be used for match play. “The USGA is very excited to return to Oakland Hills for the 2016 U.S. Amateur Championship,” said Thomas J. O’Toole Jr., chairman of the USGA championship committee. “To have the opportunity to conduct the U.S. Amateur, our oldest championship, at a club that has hosted six U.S. Opens is truly special. Many historic golf moments have occurred at Oakland Hills and we expect the 2016 U.S. Amateur will add to that history.” The 2016 championship will be the second U.S. Amateur and 11th USGA championship to be hosted by the club. The 2002 U.S. Amateur, won by Ricky Barnes over Hunter Mahan, was the most recent USGA championship at the historic layout designed by Donald Ross. The six U.S. Opens at Oakland Hills, all of which took place on the South Course, were played in 1924 (won by Cyril Walker), 1937 (won by Ralph Guldahl), 1951 (won by Ben Hogan), 1961 (won by Gene Littler), 1985 (won by Andy North) and 1996 (won by Steve Jones). In addition, the 1929 U.S. Women’s Amateur (won by Glenna Collett) and the 1981 and 1991 U.S. Senior Opens (won by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, respectively) were played on the South Course of the club in suburban Detroit. “Oakland Hills has been privileged to host 10 United States Golf Association championships,” said Oakland Hills Country Club President Terry Donnelly. “We are delighted to have been selected to host the USGA’s oldest championship in the year in which we will be celebrating the club’s centennial. 2016 will truly be a special year at Oakland Hills.” In addition to its long association with the USGA, Oakland Hills has a rich history of hosting other major championships, including three PGA Championships, in 1972, 1979 and 2008. Oakland Hills also hosted the 2004 Ryder Cup Matches, in which the European team prevailed over the United States. Taken and edited from a USGA Pete Kowalski release

================================================================ FIELDSTONE GOLF CLUB: THE COURSE & A MORNING AT FIELDSTONE ================================================================ When attending the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Induction at Indianwood that honored Arthur Hills this past May, Gordon Marmion, Fieldstone GC Director of Golf (http://www.fieldstonegolfclub.com) and I decided we would do a couple of videos of this Auburn Hills beauty that was designed by Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates (http://www.arthurhills.com). Actually that morphed into three shows, two of them now showing on the Michigan Golfer channel (http://michigangolfer.tv/2011shows/fieldstone/) with a third featuring Art Hills, at a later date. The planned show is a brisk view of the 18 hole layout of Fieldstone Golf Club, the second show occurred when we decided to use some of our video and photos of the course we shot as it was waking up to a new day. Jennie McCafferty and Gary Morgan assisted on the shoot, so with three cameras, we had some nice footage. We also added a couple of compositions from musical composer, Jamie Fallon. =============================================================== THE CADDIES OF TIGER WOODS: By Brent Kelley of http://golf.about.com =============================================================== Question: Who has worked as one of Tiger Woods' caddies? Answer: Only two men have served significant stints as Tiger Woods' caddie - at least, pending Woods' replacement of the second of those two men. The two primary Tiger Woods caddies to date are: Mike "Fluff" Cowan: Fluff Cowan was hired by Woods as caddie right at the beginning of Woods' professional career. Cowan caddied for Woods from his pro debut at the 1996 Greater Milwaukee Open through the 1999 Nissan Open. Steve Williams: After Woods dismissed Cowan, he hired Steve Williams as caddie. Woods' swing coach at the time, Butch Harmon, asked Williams during the 1999 Doral Ryder Open if he was interested in caddying for Woods. Williams interviewed with Woods (who wasn't playing Doral) shortly after and got the job. Williams' first tournament as Woods' caddie was the 1999 Bay Hill Invitational and they remained together through mid-2011, when Woods announced their split. McIlroy's management team at International Sports Management released a statement on Monday: "Rory McIlroy's long-time relationship with Holly Sweeney came to an amicable end before the Open Championship." And did McIlroy split up with Sweeney because he has a hot new romance with someone else - someone else who is also a major sports star? McIlroy was seen in London Sunday evening out with the world's No. 1-ranked tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki. According to the Yahoo! Sports tennis blog Busted Racquet, McIlroy and Wozniacki shared dinner ... and - gasp! - a kiss! McIlroy and Sweeney's breakup is a bit of a surprise because it was just a few weeks ago that McIlroy was talking about how he "begged" Sweeney to take him back. The two had been together since their mid-teens, but took a "break" earlier this year. Then Rory, in his own words, "begged" for reconciliation. Now his management team issues a statement about the second McIlroy-Sweeney breakup. Yep, Rory is playing in the big leagues now. If McIlroy and Wozniacki are now - or later become - boyfriend-girlfriend, good for them. They won't be the first golf-tennis couple: Greg Norman and Chris Evert were married for about 18 months;

A blonde lady motorist was about two hours from San Diego when she was flagged down by a man whose truck had broken down. The man walked up to the car and asked, "Are you going to San Diego ?" "Sure," answered the blonde, "do you need a lift?" "Not for me. I'll be spending the next three hours fixing my truck. My problem is I've got two chimpanzees in the back which have to be taken to the San Diego Zoo. They're a bit stressed already so I don't want to keep them on the road all day. Could you possibly take them to the zoo for me? I'll give you $100 for your trouble." "I'd be happy to," said the blonde. So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back seat of the blonde's car and carefully strapped into their seat belts, and off they went. Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of San Diego when suddenly he was horrified! There was the blonde walking down the street, holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd. With a screech of brakes he pulled off the road and ran over to the blond. "What are you doing here?" he demanded, "I gave you $100 to take these chimpanzees to the zoo." "Yes, I know you did," said the blonde, "but we had money left over s o now we're going to Sea World." ===================================== WILLIE MACK III - FACES IN THE CROWD ===================================== Willie Mack III, the winner of the 100th Michigan Amateur, was one of the "Faces in the Crowd" in the July 18 of Sports Illustrated. ====================================== MICHIGAN GOLFER CALENDAR OF EVENTS ====================================== JULY 22-23 U.S. Girls' Junior / Olympia Fields Country Club (South Course) / Olympia Fields, Ill. / http://www.usga.org/ChampsSchedule.aspx?taxid=17179869201 25-26 Michigan Women's Amateur, Prestwick Village GC, Highland, MI http://gam.org 25-26 Senior PGA Championship, Charlevoix Golf & CC, Charlevoix http://michigan.pga.com J U L Y 2 2, 2 0 1 1 - M I C H I G A N G O L F E R
