Will the Real Phil Mickelson Please StandUp - Both of You? : By Brad and Bill Shelton Olsen Living the Dream & Cairns Living the Nightmare at the PGA Championship Golf Collectors Society Annual Meeting & Trade Show to be Held in Ypsilanti Fox Hills Golf Professional Brian Cairns Gets Some Serious Ink in New York Times PGA Article Sometimes a Great Notion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHUaoBnWfZA The 24th Annual Pepsi Charity Fall Invitational - 9/25/27 Treetops Resort Golf Magazine's Top 100 Courses: Crystal Downs (12) and Oakland Hills - South (19) Palmer and Rose on PBS History of the PGA Championship West Michian Golf Show Expands to Two Halls Michigan Golfer Magazine Online Summer Issue http://michigangolfer.com Minzey's Musings Michigan Golfer Television Channel - 2011 Shows Michigan Golf Calendar Michigan Golfer Archives http://michigangolfer.com/mgn/archives.html Michigan Golf History http://michigangolfer.com/mgn/history.html Michigan Golf Association Links http://michigangolfer.com/mgn/associations.html Michigan Golf Hall of Fame http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/ghf/

One hundred of the top professionals in the world will tee it up at 7467 yard Atlanta Athletic Club in the 2011 edition of the PGA’s Glory’s Last Shot. Will it end up with drama similar to the 2010 Championship at Whistling Straits with Dustin Johnson one hole from his first major? Will this be the “coming back” party for Tiger’s dominance of the majors? Perhaps the most vexing question is “which Phil Mickelson will compete for his fifth major championship?” This will be his 19th PGA Championship. He has made the cut in 17, had 3 Top 3 finishes and 8 Top 10’s. In 2001, he lost by one stroke to David Toms at the Atlanta Athletic Club as Toms made a hole-in-one on the 15th hole to edge Lefty out of his first PGA Championship. In his 17 appearances at the PGA, he has scored as low as 65 and as high as 78--and that leads to the question of which Phil Mickelson will show up in Atlanta. Bill and Brad Shelton disagree on who is the real Phil Mickelson--the super star or the super starter? Bill---The front nine holes of the final round of the 2011 Open at Royal St. George clearly indicated that in terms of pure golfing talent, Phil may be the best in the professional ranks. Starting far back in the field, in the worst imaginable weather of wind and rain, on a difficult golf course with almost everyone struggling just to keep their balance, he shot 5 strokes better than par to make the turn tied for the lead with Darren Clarke. Clarke, the eventual winner, was able to only shoot par and perhaps feeling the pressure of a potential first major victory as he precariously navigated through his opening nine. Meanwhile, in the worst of the inclement weather, Phil was hitting fairways, dropping his approach shots deftly on the difficult greens and rolling in putts that seemed impossible. Though Phil finished second, he demonstrated he possesses a game that at times is unmatched by any other. It was a reminder of his spectacular shot during the final round of the 2010 Masters or his dominance in the 2004 and 2006 of the famed Augusta course. This is the real Phil Mickelson—8-time player in the Ryder Cup, 8 time member of the Presidents Cup team, and twice as an amateur on the Walker Cup team. Paired with David Toms and Vijay Singh, both former PGA Championship victors, Phil is ready to quiet the critics and establish that he is the most talented golfer in the PGA. Brad – If there is any indication of who Phil Mickelson is when it comes to major championships it was the back nine on Sunday at Royal St. George that tells the real story. Having pulled even with Darren Clarke, Mickelson had gained the momentum and the psychological edge on Clarke to easily win his 5th major title. Instead, Lefty followed up an incredible 5-under front nine with a 38 to finish second once again in a major. Without doubt, Phil Mickelson is a great player – 39 PGA Tour victories, 4 majors, and is ranked second all time in earnings at the PGA Championship, etc. etc. etc. - and will

someday enter the Hall of Fame as one of the best. But how different things might have been if he had just learned to finish a golf tournament? How many times have we watched on Sunday to see if Phil could pull it off this time only to be disappointed by his reckless, and often unnecessary, abandon on the inward half? By no means can one imply that Phil “chokes” them away – that would imply he doesn’t have the ability to win (see 39 PGA Victories, 4 majors, etc.) due to nerves. Rather it seems to be more of Phil getting in his own way of recognizing that sometimes par is good enough to win. Truth is, the real Phil Mickelson shows up every time and we wouldn’t have him any other way. He demands our attention with exciting runs on Sunday. We cheer loudly when he runs off birdie after birdie, and then whisper to our friends “what’s he going to do now?” He truly is both a super star and a super starter. Come Sunday at the Atlanta Athletic Club it will be no surprise if Phil is in contention and certainly no surprise if he is sitting in the press tent afterwards wondering how he let another major slip through his hands. =========================================================================== OLSEN LIVING THE DREAM & CAIRNS LIVING THE NIGHTMARE AT THE PGA CHAMPIONSHIP =========================================================================== Dan Olsen shot a respectable 8 over, 78 and Brian Cairns after having his 15 minutes of fame in Thursday's New York Times, shot a 15 over round for last place and an 85. Dan Olsen had a birdie, four bogies and two doubles in his round, while Cairns had a birdie, four bogies and three doubles to finish tied for 156th place. ========================================================================== GOLF COLLECTORS SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING & TRADE SHOW TO BE HELD IN YPSILANTI ========================================================================== The Golf Collectors Society (GCS), a non-profit association of members who collect golf memorabilia and play with hickory clubs, will hold their 41st Annual Meeting & Trade Show at the Ann Arbor Marriott at Eagle Crest in Ypsilanti, Mich. on September 22-25, 2011 In conjunction with the event, the United States Golf Association (USGA) Museum is hosting a Golf History Symposium at the Ann Arbor Marriott in Ypsilanti on Thursday, September 22, from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Authors and scholars will present original research papers on various golf history topics. ================================================================================= FOX HILLS GOLF PROFESSIONAL BRIAN CAIRNS GETS SOME SERIOUS INK IN NEW YORK TIMES PGA ARTICLE ================================================================================= "Then there was the scene on the practice putting green when Brian Cairns, a teaching pro from the Fox Hills Golf and Banquet Center in Plymouth, Mich., badly misjudged the ultra-speedy green at the Atlanta Athletic Club and knocked his first putt way past the hole. The ball rolled and rolled until it was close to where Phil Mickelson was practicing. As Cairns sheepishly retrieved his wayward ball, Mickelson turned and said, "Club pro, right?" But Mickelson also offered his hand to shake. "He congratulated me for getting into the tournament and talked with me for a while," said Cairns, who is 47. "That was really flattering. I think the tour pros welcome us. They know we are part of the event."" Generally, our running shows do quite well in attracting traffic, because we normally have at least a thousand or so that will want to know how they looked on the small screen. Our golf and ski videos seem to be steady in accumulating viewership, but the numbers are not overwhelming. However, the one we did with John Daly, "John Daly Grips it and Rips it at the Niagara Falls" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqCuFOsTVXU was the exception to the rule, with nearly 40,000 viewers. Pure Garland occurred as an afterthought to a video we did at Garland spotlighting their new management team http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_7VIBIT2Ow We had some great shots left over,

plus we received a new CD from our Music Composer for GLSP, Jamie Fallon. One of the cuts was a "Silver Sky" and it really was a beautiful piece of music. We combined the two and called it Pure Garland http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHUaoBnWfZA and made it into a Michigan Travel show. The show just seemed to take off after we put it on You Tube as more than 200 viewers saw it in the past two days without any promotion. Anyway, it was a cool video and it is nice to get such an immediate reward. Cheers. ============================================================================== THE 24th ANNUAL PEPSI CHARITY FALL INVITATIONAL - 9/25-27 - TREETOPS RESORT ============================================================================== One of Michigan's storied tournaments is celebrating its 24th year.
