=========================================== MGN ON THE ROAD - GAYLORD GOLF MECCA =========================================== This past week, members of the Michigan Golfer team and writers from Scotland, Canada and five states, were guests of the Gaylord Area CVB. Gaylord normally offers such a fam trip each year and this one had a nice turnout, due primarily to the efforts of Kevin Frisch of Fushion Media Strategies. The Loon and The Lakes Courses After settling in at The Loon's new lodging complex on Sunday, we had the opportunity to play The Loon on Monday morning. The Loon, a Mike Husby design, drew favorable reviews from the writers. The course was in great shape as substantial rains in late August had created some lush fairways and roughs. The August rains brought relief to the courses which underwent the driest summer in Gaylord history. The 14th hole of The Loon had a redesign, under the supervision of Butch Harmon. The course, because of that action, has been newly branded as a Butch Harmon Signature course. Harmon and his student, Natalie Gubis, an LPGA professional, are in their second season of golf schools at The Loon. The 2nd Annual Butch Harmon Showcase was held from July 29 - July 31st this year, and the Natalie Gulbis Showcase is scheduled for September 29th - October 1st. The schools have been well attended and have offered some serious star fire power to The Loon facilities. http://www.loongolfresort.com The afternoon was spent on The Loon's other acquisition, The Lakes Golf Course. The Lakes, a 1988 Jerry Matthews design, has bounced around for years under different management. It has been paired with Michaywe, then the Otsego Club, was later purchased in 2007 and renamed and operated as Mountain Lakes Golf Club and then sold to The Loon. The Lakes plays to 6418 yards from the tips and has a number of memorable holes including the 13th, where golfers need to launch their drive over the lake and onto a peninsula to complete the hole. The Loon has built some new lodging for its players and now can sleep 134 golfers on site. The housing occupies the land that the former cart barn occupied. Each of the units can accommodate up to two foursomes, one upstairs and another downstairs. They have a small veranda that looks out over the course, is modestly equipped, has Direct TV, limited Wi Fi and a clubhouse that provides a terrific menu.

Treetops - Threetops and Rick Smith Signature On Tuesday morning, the group started off by joining the management of Treetops, Barry Owen, GM, Kevin McKinley, Director of Golf and Skiing and Mike Ray, one of the professionals for a round of golf at renowned Threetops. Threetops, truly one of Michigan's golf course treasures, delighted the group with its uniqueness and provided a nice base for the second course of the day, Rick Smith's Signature. Smith also designed the Tradition Golf Course at Treetops, with the Jones Masterpiece and Fazio's Premier course rounding out the 81 hole inventory. Many of the golf writers had either played Treetops in the past or were familiar with the course having seen the resort on The Big Break or the Par 3 Shootout series. Also, when Travel Michigan wanted to showcase golf in their Pure Michigan commercials, they came to Treetops for their commercial taping. http://treetops.com The Otsego Club - The Tribute and Black Forest The Gaylord Herald headline that greeted the writers when they arrived in town "Wanted: Buyer of Otsego Club" certainly provided an opportunity to discuss the club's situation. They were scheduled to play three of the four courses and two of the resorts that were on the auction block. However, new Osprey President, Mike Collins, indicated that the organization wants to direct its full attention to its core business, which is renting commercial space in a variety of buildings, located primarily in Florida and Michigan. Former CEO, Mike Biber, now retired from the company, created the Osprey Recreational group. Under Biber's leadership Osprey had acquired Ridgeview GC http://ridgeviewgolf.com/ and then added in relatively brisk fashion, Manistee National, The Medalist, Black Forest at Wilderness Valley and then, bought the Ostego Club from Keith Gornick at an auction. In each case, the company put its resources in to making these properties and courses first class. Biber, whose father was the head professional at the Kalamazoo Country Club for a number of years, continued his love affair with golf, by taking many of his staff members to recent Ryder Cups. He also set up some scholarships that awarded young golfers the opportunity to attend. Biber and Osprey Recreation was also responsible for providing a new home for Michigan's Golf Hall of Fame in their Troy Office Center http://www.michigan-golf-foundation.com/michigan-golf-hall-of-fame-about.html They also got involved in the ski industry big time. The club hosted a number of Olympian hopefuls prior to the Vancouver Winter Olympics. In fact, Torah Bright, from Australia, trained there and won the gold in Vancouver. The half pipe they created at Otsego http://michigangolfer.tv/miskier/season_9/otsego_olympians/ was world class and generated stories in both the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. The writer group was housed in the Hilltop Center, an amazing corporate building with great amenities. The courses were all in great shape and the writers were particularly struck by the excellence of both the Black Forest and the Tribute http://michigangolfer.tv/2007shows/tribute/ courses. As the golf writers, tv reporters, radio personalities and others headed home, they were all impressed by

what they saw, the courses they played and the hospitality of the Gaylord Community. Hey, if Arnold Palmer http://michigangolfer.tv/2002shows/show21/ loves Gaylord why not others? ================================================================================ U-M COACH WHITTEN REMAINS OPTIMISTIC DESPITE LOSING GARBER: -By Terry Moore ================================================================================ As described by Chris Whitten, University of Michigan’s head golf coach, “It’s not uncommon for college golfers to transfer to another school but it’s uncommon for it to happen at Michigan.” Still Whitten remained upbeat and optimistic about his team’s future in spite of losing rising star Joey Garber to the University of Georgia. “We’ll have a very good team and our goals remain the same: to win the Big Ten Championship and perform well in the post-season.” Named the head coach in June after serving as an assistant to Andrew Sapp who left to coach at his alma mater North Carolina, Whitten had good things to say about Garber, the 2010 Michigan Amateur champion and the runner-up this year: “Joey was open and honest with us about his evaluation process and I am very supportive of him. Obviously, I was hoping he would return to Michigan but I wish him the best.” Reached by phone this week, Garber said it was a difficult decision to leave Michigan. “This was a tough decision about my future,” said Garber, a Petoskey native. “Going to Georgia allows me to play year round and not have such a long break from the game as you do in Michigan.” Garber said he noticed his spring scoring average was two or three shots higher than in the fall. The composition of Georgia’s team was also a factor in his decision. Runner-up to Augusta State in the NCAA Championship, Georgia graduated three All-America golfers this year and it’ll be the first time in many years where no All-America golfer is returning in the fall. “I’ve known some of the guys on the team from my junior golf days and it’s just a good fit for me.” Garber also admitted the appeal of playing Augusta National Golf Club as a team member was also a factor. “Georgia plays some wonderful courses throughout the season.” But the overriding factor for Garber’s surprising transfer was his desire to take his game to the highest stage: the PGA Tour. “When you look at the PGA Tour there are only two or three players like Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly who live in the Midwest,” said Garber. “Most of the Tour players live in the Sunbelt and play year round. Also, Georgia and Coach Chris Haack have a successful track record for producing Tour players.” One irony in the timing of Garber’s departure is that Michigan will open in October a state-of-the-art indoor golf center, a 10,000 square foot facility with open hitting bays and an expansive indoor chipping and putting green. “The facility has already made a difference in our recruiting,” says Whitten. “In my opinion, there are a number of factors that go into a player’s improvement in the course of the year. It’s not just all out on the course; there are strength and conditioning factors as well as the mental side of the game.” Whitten added: “There’s often a stigma that at northern colleges a player’s game will worsen from fall to spring. That’s not always the case.” Whitten says the Wolverines play 10 events per year, evenly divided between the fall and spring. Team members are committed to 20 hours per week of golf or practice with one day off as required by the NCAA. “It’s like a part-time job,” says Whitten. The coach is excited about the Wolverines’ prospects this coming season with the return of such stalwarts as senior Matt Thompson and junior Jack Schultz. He’s also keen on two highly touted incoming freshmen, Florida’s Andrew Wong and Korea’s Noori Hyun.

What’s the upshot to this story? Well, Michigan obviously took a hit with Garber’s departure but it still remains a strong program at an attractive institution with even better indoor facilities now. For Garber, he’s relentlessly following his dream to make it on the PGA Tour. To him, that road is routed through Athens, Georgia. Hard to quarrel with that. Yet I’m reminded of the example set by PGA Champion Keegan Bradley that the path to the Tour and success is often governed less by geography and more by a well-grounded mindset and a hungry heart. Like Garber, Bradley grew up in the north (Vermont) and skied in the long winters. He played his college golf at St. John’s University in New York, not your hotbed college golf destination, while not foregoing his New England roots. That path to fame and fortune turned out quite well. ================================ WHAT A FINISH! - By Brad Shelton ================================ Johns Creek, GA – This is third time AAC has hosted the quest for the Wanamaker Trophy and the course’s fourth major title. In 1976, the U.S. Open was played here and Jerry Pate won the event in exciting fashion stuffing a 194-yard 5-iron from the rough to within 3 feet on the last hole to clinch victory. The PGA Championship first visited Johns Creek in 1981 where Larry Nelson, a Georgia resident, won his first of three major championships. One of only three players to finish under par that year, Nelson won by 4 strokes to the pleasure of Georgia golf fans. Twenty years later, David Toms aced the 243-yard par 3 15th to record the longest hole-in-one in a PGA Championship to grab the third round lead. A memorable par saving putt on the 72nd hole was just enough to hold off Phil Mickelson for Toms’ first major title. The course itself, more specifically the four finishing holes, provided the players with a closing test as tough as any on tour. Starting at 15, the players had to navigate a 260-yard par 3 with water guarding the right side. Number 16 is a 476-yard par 4 that appears benign until you consider it is uphill with a blind second shot. The signature hole is the 207-yard par 3 17th. Club selection is a premium on this hole as there is no place to bail. Any mishit is wet. Finally, the 507-yard par 4 18th – one of the most exciting finishing holes in all of golf. Rob Moss from Pepper Pike Golf Club in Ohio, a club professional playing in his third PGA Championship, said, “The last four holes this week are probably the most difficult closing holes in all of golf. They are very hard golf holes!” Even the touring professionals were impressed. Stewart Cink simply summed up the last four holes as “brutal.” As for the field, 100 of the top 102 players in the world were competing at AAC along with the 20 best club professionals from around the Nation – and all these guys are good! Golf fans watching this week’s PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club (AAC) expected nothing less than a fantastic finish at golf’s final major of 2011. The history, course, and field were all aligned to make for an exciting conclusion – and that is exactly what we got. Here are the facts. In all four previous majors held at AAC, we have always had a first-time major winner. Keegan Bradley’s victory this week makes that five in a row for the AAC.

The final four holes were indeed the toughest finish even though the tournament committee shortened a few of the finishing holes. Number 18 played 1.44 strokes over par! We had a three-hole playoff that should have never happened. I think we all thought once Keegan Bradley made the 6 on 15 that it was all but assured that Jason Dufner would stroll in with a comfortable win. But the final three holes for Dufner were a nightmare and for Bradley, with two birdies on 16 and 17, much more like a dream. The only thing that might have been missing was a lack of tour-proven veterans in the final mix to add to the excitement. But throughout the week all the familiar names were making headlines. Tiger starts 4-under on day one only to finish the round 7-over ending a long streak of cuts made in a major. Steve Stricker looked like a shoe-in for most of the week until his falter on the last day. At the end of the day, it could any or all of these factors that make for a fantastic finish. Fortunately for us it was all. The 2011 PGA Championship lived up to the hype and expectation we have come to expect at “Glory’s Last Shot.” Will Kiawah provide the same next year – I sure hope so! ================================================================ EAGLE EYE-HAWK HOLLOW TO HOST MICHIGAN PGA CHAMPIONSHIP ================================================================ 162 Michigan PGA Professionals will tee it up at the Hawk Hollow Properties in East Lansing August 29th through the 31st for the Michigan PGA Professional Championship. Ron Beurmann of Jackson is the defending champion. The Championship is a 54-hole event. In addition to naming a champion the top 11 finishers are exempt for the 2012 PGA Professional National Championship. “It was good to see Ron play so well last year,” Michigan PGA Executive Director, Kevin Helm said. “He is up against the best competition in the state and I am looking forward to seeing how he will defend.” Beurmann will have 10-additional past champions in the 2011 field including four time winner Scott Hebert, Joe Pollack, Brian Cairns, Tom Harding, Steve Brady, Bob Makoski, Barry Redmond, Jack Seltzer, John Traub and Randy Erskine. There is a cut after 36-holes of competition. Players in the top 70 positions and ties will be vying for a piece of the $48,000 purse. The winner’s share is $7,000. “We’re proud to host the championship and house the Michigan PGA Headquarters at our complex” Alex Coss, General Manager of Hawk Hollow Properties said. “PGA Professionals add so much to the game of the golf on the consumer level. It’s a privilege to have them playing here on our Hawk Hollow and Eagle Eye golf courses.” The Michigan PGA Championship is open to the public. There is no admission charge. Players will be on both courses between 8am and 6pm the first two rounds/. The final round is played at Eagle Eye starting at 8am and concluding around 2pm. Live scoring can be found at http://www.michigan.pga.com. Taken from a Tim Hygh PGA release.

Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll, Natalie Brehm and Kim Kester will represent Michigan when they travel to The Landings Club in Savannah, GA Oct. 4-6 for the competition. The 2011 State Team Championship will be played on the Palmetto Course at The Landings Club. The Championship began as a special event of the celebration of the USGA’s Centennial in 1995. It was such a popular event that it has been conducted every two years since. This year’s championship will be the 9th in the series. It is a 54 hole stroke play event. The team score is made up of the best two out of the three individual 18 hole scores. =================================================== MICHIGAN GOLFER MAGAZINE ONLINE SUMMER ISSUE http://michigangolfer.com ==================================================== Table of Contents Memorable Masters - By Jack Berry Impressions of the 100th Michigan Amateur - By Terry Moore Collegiate Golf : Eastern Michigan University Eagles - By Chris Lewis Stephanie Kin Wins Island Resort Championship - By Lisa Mickey Northern Indiana Golf - By Mike Duff Michigan Golf Hall of Fame: Class of 2011 Collegiate Golf - University of Detroit Mercy Titans - By Chris Lewis ============================================================================= ZYLSTRA AND HARRIS WIN FOUR-BALL AT FLINT GOLF CLUB -By Susan Smiley of GAM ============================================================================= FLINT – After winning the 5th GAM Senior Four-Ball with golf partner David Harris (Oxford) at Flint Golf Club Tuesday, Bill Zylstra (Dearborn Heights) has now won three Senior Four-Ball events with three different playing partners. He won two years ago with John Jakubiak and three years ago with Pete Allen. “They are all good friends of mine and we always have a good time when we play,” said Zylstra. “These types of events aren’t as serious so we go out with the idea of having a good time and whatever happens happens.” The duo shot 67-67—134 at the classic Flint Golf Club. “The course has stayed the test of time,” said Zylstra. “For our age group it is just about right. played very well both days and we both were challenged while enjoying our round.” Harris and Zylstra don’t play together often in the summer, but are neighbors in Florida and play about once a week during the winter months. They thought they would bring their Florida game up north and see how they fared at the Four Ball. “We’ve known each other about 35 years so we just hooked up and had a good time,” said Zylstra. “When you get this age, it’s a little less intense.” Zylstra has won nine senior events in the past three years in Michigan. The operator said, "I'll be glad to help, dear. What's the name and room number of the patient?" The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, "Norma Findlay, Room 302." The operator replied, "Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse's station for that room." After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said, "I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal and her Physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow." The grandmother said, "Thank you. That's wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good news." The operator replied, "You're more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?" The grandmother said, "No, I'm Norma Findlay in Room 302.
