The Head Professional at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa shot a final round 67 and handily won by fiveshots over Eric Dovre. Dovre, the first and second round leader, faltered with a bogey on the first hole while Hebert was making birdie and his game plan suddenly changed from winning to watching. “That was a fast horse to catch,” Dovre said. “Shell-shocked is not the right word, but he came out firing and I was kind of right there with him but I made two bad swings for back-to-back double bogies (on No. 5 and 6 to finish a seven-shot swing on the leaderboard). Right then knew I wasn’t playing for first. It was like watching a Tour event; fairways, greens, no mistakes. Really a pleasure to be out there and watch that.”

Dovre finished with a 74. “I got off to a fast start for a change,” Hebert said of his four consecutive birdies. “I think that rattled Eric a bit. Those first four holes were the difference.” Hebert had a five-stroke lead by the sixth hole and played defensively from there in. Only five players broke par in the final round including Brian Cairns with a 71. He finished third. Hebert wins $6,500 for his efforts and an exemption into the PGA Professional Championship next year. A top 15 finish there can earn him a slot in the PGA Championship held June 24-27, 2012 at Bayonet and Black Horse, Seaside, CA. Bovre, Joe Pollack, Dan Olsen, Lee Houtteman, John Seltzer, Ron Beurmann, Harry Dixon, Kevin Muir, Jack Seltzer, Bret Hartman, Tom Harding and Bob Ackerman also earned exemptions into the PNC. ================================ THE BEST LAID SOD - BY Bill Shelton ================================ Three weeks ago, Ken Mangum, CGCS , Director of Golf Courses and Grounds at the Atlanta Athletic Club was a very happy man. The new grass(es) on the site of the 2011 PGA Championship looked spectacular and he proclaimed “we don’t have to worry about the heat.” And for Altanta in midAugust, heat is a real concern! Since the last PGA Championship at the AAC in 2001, Mangum worked with Rees Jones to renovate both the Riverside Course and the host course, the Highlands replacing the rough grass with Tifton 10 Bermuda grass and Diamond zoysia on the tees and fairways. The zoysia is a fast growing grass that stays green from March until December, needs less mowing and fertilizer. In 2009 the ACC bent grass greens were replaced with Champion ultra dwarf Bermuda grass that thrives in the heat, needs less water, fungicides and electric fans. The results have been impressive! In addition to having no longer to battle to keep the bent grass greens alive in the summer months of Hotlanta, the change has had a positive environmental impact and his annual maintenance has been trimmed by $50,000 annually. But sadly, sometimes the “best laid sod of men” . . . have to be laid again. With the course in immaculate condition, the weather dry and hot, the greens rolling at 12+ on the stimp meter, the grounds crew mounted the mowers late Wednesday for a final cutting before the first round began the next morning. For some unexplainable reason, the edges of two greens--14th and 17th--were badly damaged by the front brushes on two mowers almost simultaneously. The extent of the damage was enough to literally require an overnight re-sodding of the two areas. These same mowers had performed flawlessly around the rest of the course and Mangum acknowledged it is a mystery. The only possible explanation was the weather became very sticky after a very dry day and perhaps the brush grabbed and dug up the grass. Mangum and his staff did an excellent job in repairing the 2-3 foot strips around the two greens but the PGA decided to treat both areas as “ground under repair” (Rule 25-1) for the entire tournament. A highly regarded golf course professional, Mangum and his crew of 68 employees and 50 tournament volunteers can justly be proud of condition of the ACC Highlands Course. The move away from Bent grass greens to the new variety of dwarf Bermuda grass on southern courses

is an action that definitely should be made. The “stigma” of Bermuda greens being second-rate to Bent greens is thankfully losing traction. The reality is that it is just too difficult and too expensive to keep bent alive during the summer heat in the South. Syringing the greens often two or three times a day leads to fungus outbreaks and severe scarring and prolonged healing times for ball marks. In addition to the cost savings, it represents a step toward greater environmental stewardship. And, finally, the refinement of Bermuda grasses had resulted in putting surfaces that are equal to or often better than Bent. The Atlanta Athletic Club was founded in 1898 by the legendary Bobby Jones. If Bermuda greens are good enough for this venerable old course, it is good enough for any others that experience the sometimes brutal heat of the South. “The best laid sod . . . May well be Bermuda.” ======================================== BAY VALLEY RESORT TO BE AUCTIONED OFF ======================================== Thad Gutowski, The Cybergeezer, spotted another golf resort that will be on the auction block, namely Bay Valley Resort. CBRE Auctions is the same firm that is handling the Otsego Club, Manistee National and Black Forest at Wilderness Valley we reported on a couple of weeks ago. The starting bid must exceed $2,250,000. ========================================================== HOW TO USE THE CALLAWAY SYSTEM - Brent Kelley About.Golf.Com ========================================================== The Callaway System - while, like the similar Peoria System, based in certain part on luck - allows a "handicap allowance" to be determined and then applied to each golfer's score. When the Callaway System is in use, all competitors tee off and play stroke play, scoring in the normal fashion with one exception - double par is the maximum score on any given hole (i.e., on a par 4, 8 is the maximum score). Following the round, gross scores are tallied. Based on each golfer's gross score (using the double par maximum), each golfer tallies up a prescribed number of worst scores from their scorecard, then applies a second adjustment that may add or subtract additional strokes. The result is a total that is something similar to a net score using real handicaps. A couple points: • The higher a competitor's gross score, the more holes that player will be deducting; • Holes deducted begin with the highest score; if a player gets to deduct one hole and his highest score is an 8, then an 8 is what gets deducted; • Scores on the 17th and 18th holes may not be deducted, even if one (or both) of them are the competitor's highest score. • Even after high scores are added together for the allowance, the second adjustment must be made; this adjustment might add or subtract 2, 1 or 0 strokes from a player's Callaway handicap. • Once the appropriate number of high scores has been tallied, and the second adjustment is made, the player is left with a net score.

Sounds complicated, eh? That's why the Callaway System comes complete with a handy reference chart. The chart below should make things much easier to grasp. Look over the chart, then look below the chart for an example. The course, as expected was in magnificent shape. True North has become a "Trophy Course" with people from all over the U.S. playing it. We took note of the license plates in the parking lot and found cars from eight different states. ========================= DAN OLSEN - FUNNY GUY ========================= Dan Olsen got some serious ink in GolfWeek (August 19 issue) for his humor. The Forecaddie column, who interviewed Olsen at the PGA Championship, found out that Olsen was a bit out of practice signing autographs. " The last time I signed my name was for a divorce and a speeding ticket. I'm having flash backs." Jack Berry was able to enjoy some of that humor as well, during his interview with Olsen at the Tournament of Champions http://michigangolfer.tv/2010shows/boyne_toc/winners.html ================================================================================ SCHMID PREPS FOR TN WITH WIN AT 15TH GAM WOMEN'S SENIOR - By Susan Smiley GAM ================================================================================ Barb Schmid (Grand Rapids) won a two-hole playoff with Joan Garety (Ada) to capture the 15th GAM Women’s Senior championship Tuesday at Belvedere Country Club. After two rounds of stroke play, Schmid and Garety were tied at 153. Both golfers faltered on the first playoff hole with Garety chipping past the hole and Schmid three-putting. One the second playoff hole, the par-5 number nine, Schmid made an 8-foot putt for birdie to secure the victory. “We were both about even with our drives but on the second shot, Joan went into a bunker and I laid up and landed in a divot about 70 yards from the green,” said Schmid. “My third shot was about eight feet from the pin so I had a sliding 8-footer to make the birdie and Joan made par.” The two Egypt Valley golfers have shared the fairway many times over the years. Schmid said she respects Garety and was pleased to go head-to-head with her at the Women’s Senior. “I feel like if I can compete with Joan, I’m playing well,” said Schmid. “She is a great competitor and she helps to elevate anyone’s game that she plays with.” Schmid said she was using the Women’s Senior as a tune-up for the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur which happens Sept. 10-15 at The Honors Course near Chattanooga, TN.

“I went into this with the idea of working on some swing changes and getting my mind in order for next week,” said Schmid. “It was great to win the tournament and I feel good about my finish in the GAM Women’s Mid-Amateur a couple of weeks ago too. Now I just have to get in the mindset for the USGA.” For complete results go to http://www.gam.org under “championships”. ================================================================================= MUIRFIELD VILLAGE GOLF CLUB LEADS WAY WITH TOURNAMENT OF 12 HOLES, LARGER CUPS AND SLOW PLAY PENALTIES ================================================================================= DUBLIN, Ohio—Over recent months, Jack Nicklaus has joined several of golf’s leading organizations, including the PGA of America and USGA, to encourage out-of-the-box thinking to attract new players to the game and retain those already in the game. In an effort to show his commitment, the Golden Bear is experimenting with fun and innovative options in golf at one of the world’s most prestigious clubs, Muirfield Village Golf Club. Muirfield Village Golf Club, as part of its Labor Day weekend golf festivities, will host two separate 12hole tournaments, during which golfers will be encouraged to play one tee up from where they normally play, the hole will be almost doubled in size, and participants will be penalized for slow play. “I love the game of golf and believe we have a unique opportunity right now to grow our sport,” Nicklaus said. “But we all have to recognize that the game in our country has been stagnant for a number of years, and actually has lost a significant number of golfers—close to four million in the last five years, according to the National Golf Foundation. The numbers of female and junior golfers—two segments that once represented a large percentage of the new people coming into the game—have dropped 23 and 35 percent, respectively, over the last five years. Many say the game is too hard and others say the game takes too long. “I think the game is a great game and in no way am I trying to change it. There are few bigger traditionalists than me, but I realize we need to start thinking out of the box. So I ask all the traditionalists to be tolerant while we try something new, something fun to hopefully help us grow the game. It’s too important for us not to try. With so many sports and activities fighting for the time and attention of families, we need to think of ways to make our game more attractive and thus more inviting, especially to children and young adults. Perhaps what Muirfield Village is trying over Labor Day can help open a few eyes and a few minds.” Nicklaus has been outspoken in recent months about providing new and current golfers options in a round of golf. For example, if golfers are limited by time or energy, encourage them to play 6, 9 or 12 holes instead of 18. Nicklaus has also encouraged clubs to occasionally expand the hole once a month or even once a week in an effort to entice some people who might have been reluctant to try the game because they fear it’s too difficult. At Muirfield Village Golf Club and The Bear’s Club, Nicklaus’ Ohio and Florida home clubs, he has created a 12-hole scorecard as an option for members. At Muirfield Village, a 12-hole composite (Holes 1, 2, 5-13 and 14) will be used for a 12-hole better-ball tournament on Sunday, Sept. 4, and another 12hole, stroke-play event on Labor Day, Sept. 5. In both rounds, the club will use an 8-inch cup, rather than the normal 4.25 inches.

To encourage faster play, participants will be required to complete their round in 2.5 hours, and players will be penalized one stroke for every five minutes over the allotted time limit. “Muirfield Village Golf is excited to be a part of any efforts to grow the game by bringing new perspectives on it,” said Jack Nicklaus II, Chairman of Muirfield Village Golf Club. “The traditions and integrity of the game will always be respected and honored, but golf has to be cutting edge. The time has come for the golf community to make a fresh start for the benefit of the future of the game, and show new people that the game of golf can be about makeable putts, camaraderie and enjoyable competition played out in a timely manner.” Muirfield Village intends to extend their experiment into October. Traditionally, as the golf season nears its end, the club has invited all members’ children who play on a local golf team, middle school or high school, to bring their entire team to play the world-ranked golf course. This year the tradition will continue, but with a 12-hole event utilizing the 8-inch cup. The club was also among those across the country which participated over the July 4th holiday in “Tee It Forward,” an initiative from the PGA of America and USGA that encouraged golfers to play the course at a length that is aligned with their average driving distance. Golfers were inspired to speed up play by utilizing tees that provide the greatest playability and enjoyment. Nicklaus was among the campaign’s proponents, and Muirfield Village has promoted the program all season. A scorecard with five new sets of tees was created, and according to Head Golf Professional Larry Dornisch, “Golfers have been encouraged to move up to a comfortable yet challenging yardage.” “This was among many initiatives we have discussed,” Jack Nicklaus added, “and I think families around the country will enjoy alternate formats like this to make the game more fun.” In addition to the unique Labor Day weekend format, the event and the club will be playing in support of Patriot Golf Day (Sept. 2-5). At least $1 per person from every round of golf will be collected and donated, although members will be encouraged to give more. “Golf has a rich history for giving back, and in this case we have an opportunity to give back to the families of our military men and women who have sacrificed life and limb for our freedom,” Nicklaus said “At the same time, with what I hope will be a fun and unique event, we are giving back to the game of golf itself.” Taken from a Muirfield Village Golf Club release tsprouse@thememorialtournament.com

HERITAGE GOLF GROUP RAISE 19K FOR BIRDIES FOR THE BRAVE ========================================================================= Heritage Golf Group, LLC, a leading owner and operator of premier golf properties across the country, kicked off its 2011 Birdies for the Brave campaign at TPC Michigan in Dearborn, raising $19,000 to benefit members of the United States Armed Forces and their families. Together, the Heritage Collection of Clubs have donated more than $1.4 million to Birdies for the Brave since 2008. The August 8 Birdies for the Brave event at TPC Michigan -- the first of several scheduled at Heritage Golf Group properties this year -- featured a golf tournament, banquet, awards ceremony and raffle contest. Last year, the club's fundraiser garnered $17,000 for Birdies for the Brave, whose proceeds benefit numerous military homefront groups as part of the Department of Defense's America Supports You initiative. The beneficiaries and supporting PGA TOUR players are: Green Beret Foundation (http://www.greenberetfoundation.org) -- Bubba Watson; Homes for Our Troops (http://www.homesforourtroops.org) and Special Operations Warrior Foundation (http://www.specialops.org) -- Phil Mickelson; Military Warriors Support Foundation (http://www.militarywarriors.org) -- Ted Purdy; Navy SEAL Foundation (http://www.nswfoundation.org) - Jerry Kelly, Frank Lickliter II, Vijay Singh; United Through Reading (http://www.unitedthroughreading.org) -- Rory Sabbatini; Wounded Warrior Project (http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org) -- Frank Lickliter II, Jason Gore, Nick Watney, Boo Weekley; the National Guard State Family Readiness Council (http://www.nationalguardsfrc.org) -- Jim Colbert; and Operation Homefront (http://www.operationhomefront.net) - Corey Pavin. "TPC Michigan is once again proud to sponsor Birdies for the Brave, whose contributions make a tremendous impact on the lives of our military members and their families," said Lee Woodruff, General Manager of TPC Michigan. "As always, the Dearborn community showed its appreciation for the sacrifices made by America's service members, and we're grateful to everyone who so generously supported our 2011 event and previous Birdies for the Brave events as well." Birdies for the Brave is a primary element of Heritage Golf Group's philanthropic endeavors. Future Birdies for the Brave events are scheduled at Heritage Golf Group clubs as follows: http://www.thegolfwire.com/stories/244184 ========================================================================== KRAFT BEATS UCLA STAR CANTLAY IN U.S. AM FINAL - By Ryan Lavner of GolfWeek ========================================================================== The winner of the 111th U.S. Amateur never reached the state tournament in high school, chose SMU because it was convenient, became a three-time conference player of the year, and with his eligiblity exhausted, decided this summer to pour all of himself into making the Walker Cup team. former teammates and coach having flown across the country to watch his unlikely coronation, Kraft held off Patrick Cantlay, the top-ranked amateur in the world, in a taut 36-hole final Sunday to win the U.S. Amateur and earn that coveted spot on the Walker Cup team. Such a logical career trajectory. “It’s awesome,” said Kraft, 22, the silver Havemeyer Trophy by his side. “It’s such an honor to win this championship.” And it only got better minutes after winning. On the 18th green, U.S. Walker Cup captain Jim Holtgrieve walked up to Kraft and said: “See you in Scotland.” “I about had a heart attack,” Kraft said, smiling. On another sun-splashed day at Erin Hills, Kraft played steady down the stretch and capitalized on two late, uncharacteristic mistakes by Cantlay to win, 2 up. The victory likely nets Kraft a Masters invite, and he will be exempt into the U.S. Open and British Open. That alone promises to alter his postcollege plans. After the U.S. Amateur, the fifth-year senior at SMU intended to turn pro and attempt qualifying school while completing his sociology degree. Now, he has a reason to retain his amateur status. “I haven’t thought about that yet,” Kraft said. “I definitely want to play in the Masters. That’s something I’ll have to think about.” Despite losing in the final, Cantlay cemented his place atop the amateur hierarchy and became one of the main stories of the summer. He is the No. 1 amateur in the world. He earned low-amateur honors at the U.S. Open. He shot 60 in a PGA Tour event. He set a Tour record. All at age 19. But Sunday, in the biggest match of his blossoming career, the UCLA sophomore was undone by a poor tee shot on the drivable 15th, a three-putt from 15 feet on 16 and, for the first time this week, failed to muster any lateround magic on the final two holes. Time to go back to Hollywood. “I’m obviously disappointed,” he said. “I’m not thinking about what I did earlier this summer right now.” More: http://www.golfweek.com/news/2011/aug/28/kraft-beats-ucla-star-cantlay-us-am-final/ ================= MINZEY'S MUSINGS ================= Lexiphiles (lovers of words: i.e., you can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish, or I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger.
