A new recipe and aggressive television marketing, the story said. And on TV there are beautiful scenes of sunny California, from the Pacific to the snowy mountains, movie stars participating, the Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, even Betty White. It seems to me that California has been in a worse financial pickle than Michigan and yet it somehow has found funds to promote the state so people would go and spend money there. Didn't Michigan do that sort of thing awhile ago? Showed what a great state we have and that promoting it produced income from out-of-state folks and the income helped keep people employed? Whatever happened to that? Well, the Senate Finance Committee found $9.5 million (bottles and cans returns?) and, with the $5.4 million initially targeted, Tourism Michigan's George Zimmermann was quoted as saying it would permit regional advertising but not the national campaign that was so successful when the state put $33 million into Pure Michigan. MEG MALLON, the Farmington Hills Our Lady of Mercy High School grad, has been named captain of the 2011 PING Junior Solheim Cup team. Twelve top girls from across the country, age 12 to 18, will meet a European dozen next Sept. 20-21 at Knightsbrook Resort in County Meath, Ireland. Mallon should be popular there. She's as Irish as they come with a thousand freckles and smiles to prove it. The junior event will be the prelude to the Sept. 23-25 Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle, a little northwest of Dublin, with the Americans defending. Mallon was assistant captain to Beth Daniel when the U.S. won last year at Rich Harvest Farms in Illinois.

Mallon, a member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame and winner of three women's major championships, played on eight Solheim Cups. She posted a 13-9-7 won-lost-tied record and is tied with Juli Inkster for the most points by an American. A MR. MAC PICK – When Red Run Golf Club veteran Bob McMasters was president of the Western Golf Association in 1996 and 1997, Charles Warren, a top young player from Clemson University, recommended that his teammate, Jonathan Byrd, get a sponsor's exemption into the 1997 Western Amateur at Point O' Woods. McMasters asked for some detail and it was strong. Despite being one of the big movers and shakers in the WGA, McMasters refused to pull rank and wrote a letter to the tournament staff with Byrd's resume. No surprise, Byrd got in. He missed the 36 hole cut. but played all 72 holes in 1998, then missed a playoff for the Sweet Sixteen and match play. Byrd, a three-time All-American and Academic All-American, made the 1999 Walker Cup team. Matt Kuchar and Bryce Molder were teammates, among others, and faced the Great Britain & Ireland team headed by Paul Casey and Luke Donald. Byrd went back to school, graduated and then made the Nationwide Tour, won once and finished eighth on the 2001 money list, good for a ticket to big Tour in 2002, where he won once, earned $1.4 million and has been flying since with three more victories. After Byrd's shot-in-the-dark ace on the fourth playoff hole Sunday of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital tournament in Las Vegas, McMasters was looking for Byrd's address to send a congratulatory note to a player who never has forgotten that exemption to the big time Western Amateur. Incidentally, when McMasters was WGA president he got to hand the winner's trophy to Steve Stricker in 1996 and Tiger Woods in 1997. GOLF CHANNEL'S playoff coverage in near darkness was strong except for the big blue bar that covered the bottom quarter of my screen, a bar that announced that it was the final round of the Justin Timberlake tournament and just happened to cover the cup so that putts disappeared and you couldn't tell if they were made or missed. But congratulations on seeing the ball land on the green and roll to the cup. European Tour camera coverage is short of Golf Channel and the networks. Half the time the announcers don't know where the ball is. One thing they did catch, though, was the dispirited look on Sergio Garcia's face when he missed the cut at his home course, where he'd won just two years ago before falling into a funk. He looked energized when he was cheerleading at the Ryder Cup just a few weeks ago. Not so long ago he was the bright young face of European golf but Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Matteo Manassero are the faces now. WORLD SERIES TIME. Is there a more ridiculous stir up the fans call in stadiums than “Day-O, DayO?” I like the Texas Rangers playing Johnny Cash's “Ring of Fire” to rouse the masses. And why are trips always called road trips? Do you make home trips?

Another one: “caps off” as in a home run “caps off a victory.” Or “capped off.” Why the “off?” Put a cap on and it closes something, as a victory. Tigers capped victory with a walk-off home run. Take the cap off and it means it's open, not finished. ================== MGN ON THE ROAD ================= Manistee - Manistee National Resort Invitational During our travels creating videos for our golf, running, skiing and travel channels, we have taped a variety of activities on Michigan golf courses, most notably, golf tournaments, schools, weddings, cross country races and running events. Running events are not a new phenomenon, but of late, some facilities are picking up the sport to generate some additional cash flow for their depleted treasury. This past weekend we attended the inaugural Manistee National Cross Country Invitational, which was amazingly run by a bunch of golf guys. Doug Bell, GM of Manistee National was the host, Bill Shriver, GM of Arcadia Bluffs was the Race Director and Eric Ross, the cross country coach at Bear Lake, who has also worked as a golf professional. Their collective goal was to run the race, like they run golf courses, that being that the events began and ended on time. For the most part, they accomplished their goal. You can see it all at http://michiganrunner.tv/2010manistee_xc/ Other examples of golf courses being taken over by runners: Forest Akers GC - Spartans Playmakers Invitational - http://glsp.com/playmakers/ Dowagiac GC - Steve's Run - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0OLVjh_C9U Candlestone Golf and Resort - Candlestone GC - Nike Human Race http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpQDJ_FI8-k Eagle Crest Resort - MAC Championship http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzJ40B2Q_KA ============================================ GARLAND - COME OUT AND PLAY: By Mike Duff ============================================ The catchy slogan for Garland Lodge and Resort in Lewiston Michigan is “Come Out and Play”. I just spent three days at Garland enjoying a couple rounds of fall golf and had the opportunity to take advantage of some of the beautiful surroundings associated with this magnificent property. First of all, the slogan is indicative of what is available at Garland. From cross country skiing excursions or snowmobiling during the winter to golf, spring, summer and fall. Garland has something for everyone. If golf is your desire, then you have a choice of four championship golf courses that offer the best you can find in northern Michigan – lakes, streams, mature hardwoods, elevation changes and the nature and wildlife you would expect from such a destination. If something more romantic or unique is what you are looking for then maybe you would want to come out and enjoy the Gourmet Glide, a cross country ski adventure through the woods stopping to enjoy five gourmet buffet stations along the way or the Zhivago Night, which takes you on a horse-drawn sleigh to the Bridge Inn for a five-course gourmet dinner accompanied by specially selected wines. When we arrived we were told that three out of the four courses were closed for the season. However, we were able to play a couple of rounds on the Monarch. It is noted in their marketingbrochures as “one of Michigan’s toughest courses” playing to 7,100 yards from the tips. Fourteen of the eighteen

holes have significant water hazards. Women may fine this course very appealing because the yardage drops down to 4,904 yards which allows the golfer to take full advantage of the course without getting punished by its difficulty. I was, as were my playing buddies, impressed with number 8 on the front side and especially numbers 11, 12, 14 and 17 on the back nine. These were fun holes to play and experience. We stayed in one of the cabins or villas and it was great. Private, quiet, comfortable and accessible to all activities. We had two complaints, no cell service and you could not park your vehicle near the cabin. Our cabin was in the back so we had to slog our luggage quite a ways, in the rain too. But that was minor compared to all the other things that were handled with care and consideration. The other three courses; Swampfire (6,854), Fountains (6,800), and Reflections (6,407) all offer spectacular golf. All the golf courses close on Friday October 29th and will again open next spring. So plan ahead for next season and remember that golf packages give you a choice of the lodge, cabins or cottages. Garland is under new ownership after generations being owned by the Otto family. The new owners, called New Frontiers Capital have put over a million dollars in to renovating the lodge from head-totoe and some upgrades to the golf courses. These changes have helped to enhance the full range of services Garland offers, including the resort spa, massage, body wraps, facials, and many more, not to mention, seeing the largest log building east of the Mississippi. Garland is located in Lewiston, Michigan approximately 175 miles from Oakland County. Information: 877-4427526 info@garlandusa.com
