But Hicks, the 36-year-old former University of Michigan golfer, held on to end up in the 25th spot on the season’s money list and thus landed an automatic “promotion” to the PGA Tour in 2011. In spite of shooting a final round 76 which included a harrowing stretch of five bogies on his back nine, Hicks secured his first ever card by finishing in a T-26th place, worth $7400. For the year, Hicks earned $209,259 which ended up within the all-important Top 25 exempt list by only $2010. Back in May, he won the Nationwide’s BMW Charity Pro-Am where he cashed his biggest check of the year for $108,000. But he needed a decent showing last Sunday to secure his card. “That last round was tough,” said Hicks. “It was windy and in spite of hitting a lot of good shots some holes just got away. I wasn’t really feeling the pressure on the last nine as much as some shots and putts just didn’t go my way. It just happens.” Born in Wyandotte, Hicks cited hard work, patience and the support of family and friends as keys to earning his card. “I’m very fortunate to have a wife who enjoys what I do and understands the life of a Tour pro,” said Hicks. “I also want to thank my teachers Tom Tontapanish and Matt Messer and also my friend and business agent Brad Paskievitch. I couldn’t have done it without them.” Earning a coveted Tour card was especially sweet after Hicks endured a disappointing year in 2009 when he finished the year without a victory and earning $121,965--52nd spot on the money list. In 2008, he won his first Nationwide title, the Wayne Gretzky Classic in Ontario and then two weeks later he grabbed national headlines for being a first-round co-leader at the U.S Open at Torrey Pines. However, he ended the year outside of the top 25 and also failed to secure his card via Qualifying (Q) School. “I learned from all of those experiences and evaluated every aspect of my game,” said Hicks. “13 months ago I switched to a cross-handed putting grip and it helped to stabilize my putting particularly

under pressure situations. I also worked on my bunker game. I’ve learned you must have the goal of being strong in every aspect of your game. Out here, you can’t have any weaknesses. You might be average in a few areas but you can’t have any weaknesses.” Even though he secured his card, Hicks will still play in the last stage of Q School in early December. “If I finish 25th or better in the final stage, it improves my standing for getting into more events next year. In any case, I expect to get into roughly 20 PGA Tour events next year.” And Hicks is fully exempt for any Nationwide event he opts to enter. Speaking of Q School—the game’s ultimate pressure cooker—Michigan players’ fortunes so far have been a mixed bag. Most notable is Grand Rapids native Matt Harmon, the All-Big Ten grad from M.S.U, who won medalist honors at his first stage in Lakeland, Fla., with an impressive 20-under par fashion and advanced to the second stage in two weeks. Harmon won twice this past summer on the Hooters Tour. Also advancing to the second stage from the same venue was Traverse City’s Randy Hutchinson, another Spartan, who finished in the Top 23 and also qualified. At another first stage site in Pinehurst, Muskegon’s Andrew Ruthkowski finished T-11th and will also advance. Also advancing was Cedar’s Bill Rankin, a U-M standout, who finished T-13th at Kannapolis, NC. Michigan players failing to qualify for the second stage included: Mt. Pleasant native and Michigan Open champion Ryan Brehm, Birmingham’s Steve Cuzzort (missing out by a shot), Muskegon’s Brendan Gielow, Grand Rapids’s Clark Klaasen, Grosse Pte Shores’s Ryan Lenahan and Thompsonville’s Kory Mahoney. Grand Rapids native and 2010 Michigan PGA Tournament of Champions winner Andy Matthews decided to forego Q School this fall, opting instead to live in Ann Arbor in order to train with the strength and conditioning staff at U-M, his alma mater. Matthews, who won a Canadian PGA event in Mexico this year, emailed me recently: “I’ll head south in January and play a similar schedule to what I did this year, with Monday qualifying for PGA Tour events early and Canadian Tour in the summer with the Michigan Majors mixed in.” Meanwhile, Michigan’s bright star on the PGA Tour—Tom Gillis—had a profitable Asian stop last week at the limited field (40 players) CIMB Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia (isn’t that a mouthful?) Gillis finished T-11th at 13-under par and took home $121, 250 in so-called unofficial earnings. For the year, Gillis has earned $1,276,627. Michigan’s only other player on the PGA Tour is Jackson’s Brian Stuard who needs a stellar, cash-rich finish next week at Disney, the final official tournament, to retain his Tour card. Stuard is ranked 151st on the money list and is nearly $200,000 outside of the Top 125 mark. He’ll need a top 3 finish to avoid returning to Q School. Incidentally, here are the entry fees for the qualifying stages: $4500 first-stage; $4000 second-stage; and $3500 for the finals. Maalox tablets are extra.

======================================== ONCE A PIONEER NOW PART OF THE PARADE ======================================== We shot a little home video this past week, not necessarily unusual for a team that has created and put up over 4,000 videos since we started back at the turn of this century. However, what we were watching was the amazing fulfillment of a dream we had back in the late 90's, Internet Television.

At that time my wife Jennie and I both worked as associate Art McCafferty (center) and Tim Berners deans at Eastern Michigan University. Jennie was in charge of Lee (right) at the World Wide Web conference in Paris, 1996. faculty and student computing and I was in charge of off campus programming and to a certain extent product development for the university. Working as a team at the University, we were able to herald the arrival of the Internet by teaching the first such class at the time in Michigan academe. During that time, Jennie and I had the opportunity, along with Gary Baker of WJR's Internet Advisor show, to meet with Vint Cerf, the "Father of the Internet." Shortly after that, we shared a magical time by having lunch with the inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners Lee, at the Louvre in Paris, during an international conference. Those were heady days in our academic careers. During this time, GLSP was a partner in a company, that produced the television show, Golfing Michigan. The show was on a couple of local Michigan stations, WZZM TV in Grand Rapids and Channel 50 in Detroit. The show's host was Frank Beckman. The show was expensive to produce and because of that, we could only keep it on for one year. A year later, the show resurfaced as Golfing the Great Lakes and was targeted toward the public television markets in Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio. That show ran about seven years and all told we visited over 70 courses in the Great Lakes area. Our hosts for these shows included; Tom Cleary and Larry Adderley, both first rate golfers and on air talent. My responsibility for the shows, was to contact courses, CVB's and anybody else who looked like they they might have sponsorship money . While successful in keeping the show on for seven years, it never turned a profit, and was highly subsidized by the partners. Tom Durant, CEO of Video Images, was our producer. Durant would later go on to produce "Ports O' Call", a series that lasted five years on PBS Part of the problem on the revenue side was the strict policies of public television, that did not allow any traditional "commercial" video within the program. We had a chance to briefly mention sponsors going in and out of each show. This was a very tough sell, as clients wanted more exposure for their hard earned dollars. The other problem was that the show had so many show dates in the various markets. The series might start in March in Detroit and May in Milwaukee. Our time slots were also all over the place. As such, it was difficult to alert our sponsors as to when their show would be on, and if they missed it, they might never see it again. As the marketing guy, I usually, sent a tape to the clients, so they could see it.

As we were closing up shop on our final year, I vowed that the next time I got involved with golf television, it would be on the Internet. I knew that if a sponsor wanted to know when the show was going to be on, I could tell them it would be on tomorrow, the next day or a year from now, because it would always be on. At that time, there was little if any video online as the pipes that carried the Internet, were not fat enough to carry that amount of content. Our dream finally came true on March 9th, 2001, when we launched The Michigan Golfer Television Show on the internet http://michigangolfer.tv and then followed that up with The Michigan Skier, Michigan Travel, Michigan Runner, Running Canada and The Running Network channels. As mentioned we have put up over 4,000 shows over the past ten years, which have been seen by millions of viewers. What has changed is the delivery system. Our attention this past week and the focus of our home video, was the Rally to Restore Sanity or Fear. We were able to see the show live on the Comedy Central channel, a laptop computer, our iPhone and iPad; all at the same time. The fact that they were able to stream video to all of these appliances, with the speed and overall clarity was amazing. Seeing all of these screens projecting the show, triggered my memory on the journey we started ten years ago, when our small company had taken the first step to create the world's first Internet Television Network. While the Internet and its attributes will continue to amaze us, it also proves to those that dream other dreams, that they can come true. =========================================================== BOOK REVIEW: "TRUE LINKS" By George Peper and Malcolm Campbell =========================================================== During a quarter of a century of the incredible growth in Michigan's golf course inventory, our Michigan Golfer writers were constantly bombarded with releases saying that this course or that course was a links or a links type course. The one course that really seemed to grab attention as a links type course, was the Gailes course in Oscoda. There was not a tree on it, and the grasses, bunkers and use of wasteland was extremely dramatic. Yes, this was a links course. Wrong. George Peper and Malcolm Campbell have produced the definitive work on golf link, or "True Links' with their work. True links identifies 246 courses in the world, 25 of them being nine hole courses. Most are located in Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England, with a smattering of other courses throughout the world. The have identified 5 in the U.S. three of those being in Bandon, Oregon. none in Michigan. The authors took time to define what a links course was, " true links must have sea views and sandy dune like terrain, with fast running fairways, buffeted by ever-changing maritime winds." There you have it and now you know. Two years ago, I had the opportunity to golf Ireland's Waterville and also capture a glimpse of the famed Lahinch through my camera's lens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z91FkG-H8o . Since both made the list, I now have only 244 more to see. Peper and Campbell have made this latter task much easier with their "True Links". As you might

expect, the book is a beauty to hold and behold. It has coffee table size, it is printed on a high gloss paper and its 300 pages are highlighted by the excellent photography of Iain Lowe. The writing is of the highest quality, really what you would expect with the pedigree of its authors. Peper, was the former editor of Golf Magazine and Malcolm Campbell, had the same role with Europe's Golf Monthly. If you are a collector of golf books, this is a must for your library. It is hitting the book stores just in time for the holidays and would be a welcomed present for anyone who has a love of the game. http://artisanbooks.com ====================================================== JACH BERRY AND CATHAL O'SULLIVAN WILL TAKE YOU THERE ====================================================== Cathal O Sullivan, of Sullivan Golf and Travel, http://www.sullivangolf.ie/ was quick to pounce on the excitement and travel opportunities that "True Links" will bring. We just received this missive from Cathal highlighting his travel company. "Greetings from the Emerald Isle, Hope all is well wherever you may be! I trust you had an enjoyable summer of Golf. How many links golf courses have you played in the United States? According to a new book, it's probably fewer than you think. The book, entitled True Links, claims there are 246 authentic links courses in the world, but only four of them exist in the USA. The only four courses in the United States they say are “true links” are Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, and Old Macdonald (all at Oregon’s Bandon Dunes Golf Resort) and Highland Links on Massachusetts’ Cape Cod. However, True Links does features 84 courses in Scotland, 58 in Ireland, 53 in England and 15 in Wales which means outside of Ireland and the United Kingdom, there are only 36 True Links Courses in the World. We at Sullivan Golf & Travel will continue our aim to deliver the best True Links experience for our clients. Value for money has very much returned to our shores. Should you require any True Links Proposals, please do not hesitate to drop us a note. Best wishes in 2011 from all your friends at Sullivan Golf & Travel. Regards, Cathal O Sullivan Sullivan Golf & Travel is Travel Partner of the Golf Association of Michigan Note: For those of you that would like to get a feel for ireland golf, you have only to click on the Ireland golf series we did with Jack Berry a few years back. Berry has most likely golfed more ireland courses than anyone in America. http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/golfireland/

============================================================ GOLF CHANNEL OR EUROPEAN TOUR COVERAGE - WHICH IS BETTER ============================================================ Hi Art, Your missives, which you are still sending me, are very interesting - well, for me the international bits, anyway! However, I must take issue with your comments in the October 29 news about European golf tour TV coverage! (Excerpt from Jack Berry's piece last week -"European Tour camera coverage is short of Golf Channel and the networks. Half the time the announcers don't know where the ball is. One thing they did catch, though, was the dispirited look on Sergio Garcia's face when he missed the cut at his home course, where he'd won just two years ago before falling into a funk. He looked energized when he was cheerleading at the Ryder Cup just a few weeks ago. Not so long ago he was the bright young face of European golf but Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Matteo Manassero are the faces now.") Maybe you get a differently edited version to us, but at least we don't have to put up (as on the PGA tour coverage) with commercial breaks every 3 or 4 shots, interviews with local dignitaries instead of golf, and the ridiculous half hour break when one TV station ends its coverage and another takes over. Why cannot the same station cover the whole event? Give me the European coverage any day! Best wishes to you and Jennie Jonathan & Robyn Cattell (Your Irish golf tour friends) ====================== GARY PLAYER TURNS 75 ====================== Legendary golfer Gary Player celebrated his 75th birthday in Shanghai, China, on Monday, where he spent time with AIDS orphans while reflecting on the single biggest lesson that his life as one of the world’s most iconic sportsmen has taught him. Speaking on Sunday from his latest course design, Hidden Tiger on Taiping Lake, Player said as he looked back on a career of nine Majors on the regular tour, nine on the senior tour, and 166 tournament victories worldwide, “It’s not about me.” “My talent was a gift, and it could’ve been taken away just as quickly. Golfers are phenomenal at giving back, and that has been my responsibility in recognition of what I received throughout a wonderful career.” “I grew up with no head start in life, but I still had dreams. Yes, I was fortunate to have the ability to overcome challenges. But I also had good people who helped me along the way. That is what I am hoping to achieve through my Foundation – that somewhere we can be the help a child needs to achieve his or her dreams despite the challenges they face.” Player took some time to reflect on an amazing career in the game. “I think one of the best shots I ever hit in my life was the three wood I hit to 14 inches from the hole on the par-five 14th at Carnoustie to win the 1968 British Open. “Beating Arnold Palmer in the 1961 Masters was also a highlight. Winning the Grand Slam on the regular tour in my Twenties is something I am particularly proud of.

But I’m just as proud of my Grand Slam on the senior tour, because I’ve always believed it was far harder to achieve in light of my age.” And his greatest rival? “There were so many great players in our generation. Arnold (Palmer) and Jack (Nicklaus) obviously. Tom Watson was phenomenal. But I always admired Jack for his patience. “I built a golf course on my farm in South Africa, and one of the holes I named Cactus Jack. On one occasion when Jack was staying with me, he officially opened the hole, and I had this bronze plaque made and placed on the tee box.“So the next morning I’m sitting having breakfast and the sun catches this plaque and the reflection almost blinds me. I said to Jack, ‘If it wasn’t bad enough I had to face you on the golf course all those years, now I’ve got you in my face on my farm as well’. He had a good laugh about that one.” Taken and edited from a Natasha Terlecki releaase =============================================================================== $110,000 FUTURES TOUIR ISLAND RESORT CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD AT SWEETGRASS =============================================================================== The LPGA Futures Tour announced today the Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass. The $110,000 international tournament will be held June 20-26 at the Island Resort & Casino's Sweetgrass Golf Club, bringing 144 professional women golfers to Michigan's pristine Upper Peninsula. “We are thrilled to add the Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass to our official 2011 schedule and to provide many of the most talented young women professionals in the world a chance to experience this challenging test of golf,” said Zayra F. Calderon, CEO of the LPGA Futures Tour. Sweetgrass Golf Club is situated on the grounds of the Island Resort & Casino and operated by the Hannahville Band of the Potawatomi Nation. The 7,275-yard, par-72 layout was added to GOLF Magazine’s “Best Courses Near You” ranking in September, listing Sweetgrass among the 20 best public courses in the golf-rich state. Opened in 2008, the course complements the Casino’s complete offering of year-round gaming, 275 hotel rooms, dining, live entertainment and conference center. "Sweetgrass is ideally situated for championship play, particularly for the variety of challenges it offers from tee to green,” said Island Resort & Casino General Manager Tom McChesney, who operates the course. “We look forward to hosting the brightest stars of the Tour as they’re tested on this links-style layout. The Upper Peninsula, the Hannahville Band of the Potawatomi Nation, and the Casino share in the excitement of this announcement.” Taken and edited from a LPGA release ==================== HOPE FOR THE HOPE ==================== A few months ago, we visited the World Golf Hall of Fame, and for the second time we were able to visit the Bob Hope exhibit. It is a fun experience that seems to bring life to the facility.

For years, golf fans were able to watch the Bob Hope Classic and see all the top golfers and many Hollywood stars. The tournament continues, but is considerably diminished, due to Hope's death and the lost sponsorship of Chrysler. They have tried a variety of things to jack up the ratings, but are on the tournament "watch list". It’s a whole new world as the Bob Hope Classic embarks on its exciting 52nd year, Jan. 17-23, 2011. But, as the Classic looks to its future, the highlights of the first 51 years always will provide great memories. Top Memories 1960 – Arnold Palmer wins Palm Springs Golf Classic. 1960 – Joe Campbell makes hole-in-one to earn $50,000 – four times more than the winner. 1963 – Jack Nicklaus wins in 18-hole playoff with Gary Player. 1973 – Arnold Palmer Wins 5th Classic title, the final victory of his PGA TOUR career. 1975-76 – Johnny Miller wins back-to-back titles. 1993 – Tom Kite shoots 35-under par 325 to set Classic record. 1995 – President Bill Clinton becomes first sitting president to play in Classic. He played in a group with former presidents George Bush and Gerald Ford. It was the first time three presidents had ever played together. 1999 – David Duval shoots closing 59 to win the Classic, a first in PGA TOUR history. 2001 – Joe Durant shoots record 36-under-par 324. 2003-04 – Lefties Mike Weir and Phil Mickelson win back-to-back and each go on to win Masters. For more than four decades, one of the can’t-miss moments of the Classic was on the first tee of the host course on opening day. It was there that the tournament host and namesake would introduce and roast the celebrities in the field. No celebrity or pro golfer was spared. From actor Jimmy Stewart – “He could have been a good golfer, but by the time he said, ‘Fore,’ the guy was in an ambulance on the way to the hospital,” – to former President Gerald Ford – “He’s easy to spot, he drives the golf cart with the red cross painted on top, “ – and to even himself –“I asked Arnie (Palmer) once how I could improve. His advice to me was to cheat,” – the one-line zingers always found their mark. Shortly after his 100th birthday, Bob Hope passed away in summer 2003, but he left some lasting impressions and memories for many

of the stars and golf professionals who played in his tournament. Hope knew all along what the fans wanted. It was entertainment and good golf. All he had to do was invite his many celebrity friends to play four rounds of golf with pros and amateur partners before yielding the stage to the top golfers in the world on the fifth day. “Bob Hope was one of the pioneers that had a lot to do with the entertainment industry supporting golf,” said Palmer, the only five-time winner of the Classic. “Who knows what the bottom line was to the value of that because it certainly was important to the PGA TOUR. The fact that people like Bob, Bing Crosby and Clark Gable and their friends supported golf and made more people aware of the game helped the professional tour.” If the future is anything like the storied past, more exciting moments and memories are in store for golf fans at the 2011 Bob Hope Classic. Bill Haas is defending champion. Tournament play begins Wednesday, Jan. 19 and concludes Sunday, Jan. 23 at the Palmer Private at PGA West. Other courses in play in 2011 include La Quinta Country Club, SilverRock Resort, and the Nicklaus Private Course at PGA West. In 51 years, the Classic has donated nearly $49 million to charities throughout the Coachella Valley. Patriot Golf Day, jointly supported by The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association (USGA), is the primary fundraiser for Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation. A total of 1,163 educational scholarships have been awarded by Folds of Honor since 2007, with hundreds more to be awarded in 2011. "Since its origin in 2007, it has been extremely gratifying to witness the support that PGA Professionals have given to Patriot Golf Day," said PGA of America President Jim Remy. "The game of golf leads the way in giving back to others in so many ways, and Patriot Golf Day lies at the heart of that benevolence in serving so many deserving families of our American heroes." Patriot Golf Day was originated by Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 pilot, PGA Professional and USGA Member from Broken Arrow, Okla., who has served three tours of duty in Iraq. During Labor Day Weekend at participating courses nationwide, golfers were asked to donate at least $1 for each round of golf. Non-golfers participated by making a donation to the foundation at its website at FoldsofHonor.com. President George W. Bush (43) was named honorary Chairman of 2010 Patriot Golf Day Weekend and helped "kick-off" the weekend festivities by playing a round of golf with Major Rooney, Remy,

veteran double-amputee Heath Calhoun and FOX & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade, Sept. 3, in Waco, Texas. The inaugural Patriot Golf Day was held Sept. 1, 2007, and resulted in donations of more than $1.1 million. More than $2.1 million was raised in 2008 and more than $2.3 million was raised in 2009.
