This one-of-a-kind golf course features beauty, toughness, class and a troubled past, ingredients that have made it one of America's most decorated golf courses. The course has been featured in countless golf magazines in their "Best of..." rankings almost from its opening (Golf Digest has again ranked Arcadia Bluffs as #10 in the Top 100 Public Courses, 20092010). As stated it had a troubled birth, as a "hundred year" storm rolled in from Lake Michigan with heavy rains, three inches in a one hour period, that created catastrophic erosion on the course that created a delta in Lake Michigan. Another storm ensued, pitting conservationists, politicians against the developer, Richard Postma. The face of the Arcadia Bluffs is William S. Shriver, a Ferris grad, who has had a number of golf professional positions since graduating from their golf management program. Shriver has been there from the start and his management and style has contributed substantially to the panache of Arcadia Bluffs. Shriver supplements his golfing activity with running. A seasoned and storied runner, he has run marathons all over this country. One such run was the 34th Marine Corps Marathon, where he and a number of other PGA golf professional raised over $80,000 for the Folds of Honor Foundation that was founded by Major Dan Rooney. You may instead retire to your room and look out upon one of America's greatest courses and the wondrous Lake Michigan. http://arcadiabluffs.com *** Manistee National Resort We caught up with Doug Bell, GM of Manistee National Resort, as he was manning the front desk, taking phone calls and a variety of other tasks that GM's do in the off season. The golfers have been replaced by hunters in the hotel and the proshop was winding up its year, with golf professional Ian Ziska moving over to the hotel staff during the winter. Manistee National and Bell represent the linchpin of the Golf Manistee http://www.manisteegolf.com/ marketing group which represents course and lodging properties that are available in Manistee. They have some terrific properties and a variety of golfing experiences. In addition, Manistee is yet another great Michigan port. ============================= GIVING THANKS: By Terry Moore ============================= With Thanksgiving next week, I’m thankful for golf partners who…. ... take the game seriously but never themselves. ... always recognize a good shot and if the spectacular occurs will even break out in polite applause. ... have the flagstick already in their hand when the last putt falls, minding the maxim, “First one in, grabs the pin.” ... are ready to hit when it’s their play. ... walk and carry/pull their clubs so you’re all experiencing the journey of the game. ... search earnestly for your lost ball. ... never take more than five minutes to look for their own lost ball and invariably say, “Thanks, guys, but go ahead and hit your shots.” ... at the turn ask, “May I get you anything?” ... pick up your club or towel left on the green while you’re putting out. ... utter a brief “thanks” after you say “good shot!” ... kindly remind you to re-mark your coin in the proper spot if it had been moved over to avoid their line. ... invoke the “mercy rule” and not have you suffer a four-putt for a triple bogey. ... warmly welcome into the group a single waiting on the first tee. ... will fix your ball mark without hesitation. ... not only won’t complain about another bad break or bounce, but can even laugh about it. ... have the tact not to ask, “What did you have on that hole?” while you’re still digesting an embarrassing ‘circus train wreck.’ ... go out of their way to grab a rake while you’re hopelessly plugged in the bunker ... ask friendly questions of their playing companions during the course of the round because the social fabric of the game is told in the interrogative not the declarative. ... always buy a round when they’re the big winner of the day. ... buy a second round in spite of being the big losers of the day. ... ask at the 19th hole, “Hey, what time are we playing next week and can I pick you up?” ======================================================== WEST MICHIGAN GOLF SHOW THANKFUL FOR ITS SPONSORS ======================================================== Entering its 23rd season, the West Michigan Golf Show-- to be held Feb. 11-13 in downtown Grand Rapids-- is thankful for its sponsors in making the show a “must attend” golf happening for the state. “Approaching the Thanksgiving holiday, we want to express our gratitude to not only our patrons and exhibitors but also to our loyal sponsors who help to elevate the show and make it better each year,” said Show Manager Carolyn Alt. “In particular, our sponsors broaden the awareness of the show while also supporting the many interactive areas of the show so popular with golfers. The designers were intrigued by the opportunity to utilize mined land and to work side-by-side on their two courses at Streamsong Resort, a 16,000-acre project being developed by The Mosaic Company, the world’s leading producer and marketer of phosphate-based crop nutrients. The resort is located in southern Polk County, Fla., between Tampa and Orlando. Both architectural firms will leverage their experience working on unique, sandy sites to design two intersecting, world-caliber golf courses that are being developed concurrently. The topography of the land—which features appealing elevations and dramatic contours left from the mining process — will make for a challenging, dramatic and aesthetically fulfilling golf atmosphere. “This land is naturally conducive to uncovering great golf holes,” said Ben Crenshaw of Coore & Crenshaw. “It is going to be spectacular, and has its own inherent character that will translate into two memorable courses.” “This is such a good piece of land for golf,” said Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design. “The variety of contours created by the mining process is unique for a project in Florida, or anywhere in the Southeast.
