This one-of-a-kind golf course features beauty, toughness, class and a troubled past, ingredients that have made it one of America's most decorated golf courses. The course has been featured in countless golf magazines in their "Best of..." rankings almost from its opening (Golf Digest has again ranked Arcadia Bluffs as #10 in the Top 100 Public Courses, 20092010). As stated it had a troubled birth, as a "hundred year" storm rolled in from Lake Michigan with heavy rains, three inches in a one hour period, that created catastrophic erosion on the course that created a delta in Lake Michigan. Another storm ensued, pitting conservationists, politicians against the developer, Richard Postma. The resulting legal battle became a national story and resulting in stories, much like the one published in the New York Times. http://www.nytimes.com/1999/08/17/us/fairway-is-not-nature-s-critics-of-developer-say.html It has been more than a decade since its troubled beginning; since then, as stated, the course has attracted trophy hunting golfers from all over the world. The clubhouse has gone through three renovations since that time, the latest being the addition of 15 rooms. http://www.arcadiabluffs.com/the_lodge.php Added to the list of awards the golf course has received, was Golf Digest recognized it as one of the Top 50 19th Holes in one of their rankings. http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-courses/golf-courses/19thholes?currentPage=1

The face of the Arcadia Bluffs is William S. Shriver, a Ferris grad, who has had a number of golf professional positions since graduating from their golf management program. Shriver has been there from the start and his management and style has contributed substantially to the panache of Arcadia Bluffs. Shriver supplements his golfing activity with running. A seasoned and storied runner, he has run marathons all over this country. One such run was the 34th Marine Corps Marathon, where he and a number of other PGA golf professional raised over $80,000 for the Folds of Honor Foundation that was founded by Major Dan Rooney. Shriver ran a respectable 3:41:58 in the race. http://www.worldgolf.com/newswire/browse/60901-PGA-Professionals-run-Marine-Corps-Marathonraise-funds Shriver recently contributed his knowledge and skill in running toward the Manistee National Cross Country Invitational. http://michiganrunner.tv/2010manistee_xc/ The golf experience at Arcadia Bluffs is both pricey and priceless. While premium golf rates are pegged at $180, Shriver is quick to point out that off season rates can drop to $75 a round and that senior and ladies day rounds can get the tariff to where a Ben Franklin note will cover it. The lodging has created yet another market for Arcadia Bluffs, with stay and play packages, weddings and special events like Thanksgiving dinners and wine tasting to allow for a pleasant evening sampling the best of food and wine. After such an evening, you need not return to your car for that adventurous ride home. You may instead retire to your room and look out upon one of America's greatest courses and the wondrous Lake Michigan. http://arcadiabluffs.com *** Manistee National Resort We caught up with Doug Bell, GM of Manistee National Resort, as he was manning the front desk, taking phone calls and a variety of other tasks that GM's do in the off season. The golfers have been replaced by hunters in the hotel and the proshop was winding up its year, with golf professional Ian Ziska moving over to the hotel staff during the winter. Manistee National and Bell represent the linchpin of the Golf Manistee http://www.manisteegolf.com/ marketing group which represents course and lodging properties that are available in Manistee. They have some terrific properties and a variety of golfing experiences. In addition, Manistee is yet another great Michigan port. We did a show a year ago, we entitled "Morning Comes to Manistee http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3Z25JSc1hc. The video shows off Manistee as well as its great river walk. Manistee National Resort is one of a number of properties that are under the Osprey Recreational Properties umbrella, or Golf Osprey Online http://www.golfospreyonline.com. Other properties include The Otsego Club, The Medalist, Black Forest and Ridgeview. We also had the opportunity to work with Bell and his staff as well as volunteers from Arcadia Bluffs when they launched the Manistee National Cross Country Invitational this fall. http://michiganrunner.tv/2010manistee_xc/.

============================= GIVING THANKS: By Terry Moore ============================= With Thanksgiving next week, I’m thankful for golf partners who…. ... take the game seriously but never themselves. ... always recognize a good shot and if the spectacular occurs will even break out in polite applause. ... have the flagstick already in their hand when the last putt falls, minding the maxim, “First one in, grabs the pin.” ... are ready to hit when it’s their play. ... walk and carry/pull their clubs so you’re all experiencing the journey of the game. ... search earnestly for your lost ball. ... never take more than five minutes to look for their own lost ball and invariably say, “Thanks, guys, but go ahead and hit your shots.” ... at the turn ask, “May I get you anything?” ... pick up your club or towel left on the green while you’re putting out. ... utter a brief “thanks” after you say “good shot!” ... kindly remind you to re-mark your coin in the proper spot if it had been moved over to avoid their line. ... invoke the “mercy rule” and not have you suffer a four-putt for a triple bogey. ... warmly welcome into the group a single waiting on the first tee. ... will fix your ball mark without hesitation. ... not only won’t complain about another bad break or bounce, but can even laugh about it. ... have the tact not to ask, “What did you have on that hole?” while you’re still digesting an embarrassing ‘circus train wreck.’ ... go out of their way to grab a rake while you’re hopelessly plugged in the bunker ... ask friendly questions of their playing companions during the course of the round because the social fabric of the game is told in the interrogative not the declarative. ... always buy a round when they’re the big winner of the day. ... buy a second round in spite of being the big losers of the day. ... ask at the 19th hole, “Hey, what time are we playing next week and can I pick you up?” ======================================================== WEST MICHIGAN GOLF SHOW THANKFUL FOR ITS SPONSORS ======================================================== Entering its 23rd season, the West Michigan Golf Show-- to be held Feb. 11-13 in downtown Grand Rapids-- is thankful for its sponsors in making the show a “must attend” golf happening for the state. “Approaching the Thanksgiving holiday, we want to express our gratitude to not only our patrons and exhibitors but also to our loyal sponsors who help to elevate the show and make it better each year,” said Show Manager Carolyn Alt. “In particular, our sponsors broaden the awareness of the show while also supporting the many interactive areas of the show so popular with golfers. And many of these interactive areas in turn help to raise funds for local charity.” Returning as the sponsor of the Par-Three Challenge is Treetops Resort of Gaylord, Mich. Through Treetops’ support, a fully landscaped par-three will again be built inside DeVos Place. Raising money

for local charity, golfers will tee it up and compete for closest to the pin prizes and hope to be that one lucky golfer who makes an ace on Sunday afternoon and earns $25,000. Incidentally, in 2011, Treetops will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Masterpiece course designed by the renowned architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Anniversaries will be a theme for several other sponsors at this year’s show to be held at DeVos Place. Shanty Creek Resort, in Bellaire, Mich, will be celebrating the 25th anniversary this year of the Arnold Palmer-designed The Legend Golf Course, one of Michigan’s most popular layouts. With special prizes, gifts and seminars, Shanty Creek will be touting this milestone for The Legend in its sponsorship of Ladies Night at the Golf Show on Friday, Feb. 11. Meanwhile, the Golf Association of Michigan (GAM), an exhibitor for the past 23 straight years, returns as a sponsor representing nearly 60,000 amateur golfers in the state. Once again, show patrons can sign up for a GAM membership, which includes the popular Swing & Save Gold Card, at the GAM booth. The GAM’s premier event is the Michigan Amateur which will celebrate its 100th edition in June at Boyne Highlands. In conjunction with Boyne Resorts, the GAM is planning a number of special events to mark this special Centennial of the Amateur Championship first held at Kent County Club in Grand Rapids in 1906 and won by James Wylie of Saginaw. Boyne Resorts and the Michigan P.G.A. again will be providing free golf lessons all weekend at DeVos Place. In spite of snow on the ground outside, golfers inside the Show will be receiving an early season swing tune-up with PGA golf professionals. And Srixon returns as “the official golf ball of the West Michigan Golf Show.” Anyone purchasing tickets online (hint: a stocking stuffer) as well as the first 100 people entering the Show each day will receive a free 2-ball pack of Srixon. Held continuously since 1989, the West Michigan Golf Show will attract thousands of Michigan golfers to hundreds of exhibits and will feature clinics by the 2010 PGA Teacher of the Year, Todd Anderson, a native of Grand Rapids and now Director of Instruction at Sea Island Golf Club in Georgia. Produced by ShowSpan Inc., the West Michigan Golf Show’s hours are 4:00 pm-9:00 pm, Friday; 10:00 am-7:00 pm, Saturday; and 10:00 am-5:00 pm, Sunday. Tickets are $9 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-14, and children 5 and under are free. Tickets will be available at the door as well as online at http://www.westmichigangolfshow.com. ========================================================================= TOM DOAK, BEN CRENSHAW & BILL COORE BUILDING SIDE-BY-SIDE ON UNIQUE FORMER MINING SITE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA ========================================================================== Polk County, Fla.—Coore & Crenshaw and Tom Doak–led Renaissance Golf Design will create two highly distinctive, yet intertwined, 18-hole golf courses on a formerly mined phosphate site in Central Florida.

The designers were intrigued by the opportunity to utilize mined land and to work side-by-side on their two courses at Streamsong Resort, a 16,000-acre project being developed by The Mosaic Company, the world’s leading producer and marketer of phosphate-based crop nutrients. The resort is located in southern Polk County, Fla., between Tampa and Orlando. Both architectural firms will leverage their experience working on unique, sandy sites to design two intersecting, world-caliber golf courses that are being developed concurrently. The topography of the land—which features appealing elevations and dramatic contours left from the mining process — will make for a challenging, dramatic and aesthetically fulfilling golf atmosphere. “This land is naturally conducive to uncovering great golf holes,” said Ben Crenshaw of Coore & Crenshaw. “It is going to be spectacular, and has its own inherent character that will translate into two memorable courses.” “This is such a good piece of land for golf,” said Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design. “The variety of contours created by the mining process is unique for a project in Florida, or anywhere in the Southeast. I have been friends with Bill and Ben for many years, and it is great fun to be working right alongside them. I think it will bring out the best work in each of us.” According to Bill Coore, “Through the years, Ben and I have been fortunate to work on a number of exceptional sites that were naturally gifted for golf. These sandy sites brought forth the Sand Hills Golf Club in Nebraska, Bandon Trails in Oregon, Friar’s Head Golf Club in New York and Lost Farm in Tasmania, Australia. “At Streamsong,” he added, “we have the opportunity to work with a site that contains some of the most unusual, interesting and dramatic land forms we have ever encountered. From its towering dunes, sandy fields, and pristine lakes, we believe this land has the potential to yield two extraordinary golf courses. Being able to work alongside Tom Doak and our good friends at Renaissance Golf Design to simultaneously create the two courses makes this a very special project indeed.” =============================================== HOW TO USE GOLF GPS AND IMPROVE YOUR GAME =============================================== As one wag put it, playing with a golf GPS is like playing with a caddie, except a GPS doesn’t question your club selection. Actually, where accurate distance information is concerned, a golf GPS is better than all but the most experienced and diligent caddies. KIM DONATES CHECK TO CHARITY ================================================= Let's give a hand to In-Kyung Kim, winner of the 2010 Lorena Ochoa Invitational. Kim closed with a 64, and she deserves applause both for the victory and for shooting 64 to earn it. She also deserves applause for donating her entire winner's check - all $220,000 of it - to charity. Kim announced that intention right after her victory, with the Lorena Ochoa Foundation getting half, and
