We lead off with Jack Berry summoning up the Top 10 Michigan Golf Stories of 2010. As always, when one of America's greatest golf writers makes observations, they are worth paying attention to. Enjoy. Chris Lewis, a Hope College grad, trying to make it in a tough golf market for writers, continues his series on Michigan Collegiate Golf. In this issue, he focuses on Calvin College in, "A Season to Remember: Calvin College Knights Capture 2010 MIAA Championship". Kelly Hill brings us up to date in high school golf with his "Michigan High School Golf Roundup". Michigan continues to turn out a fine product. Mike Duff, fresh off his reporting at the PGA Champion this year, stopped by Garland for some fall golf. He also brings us up to date with what the new management is up to there. The Shelton's are at it again, as son Brad and father Bill, continue not to see eye to eye on some of golf's current topics. The father and son team, both excellent golfers, have a couple of topics they discuss in this issue; "Golf Rules" and "Olympic Golf". This is great stuff as their writing skills are on a par with their golf skills. Terry Moore takes a look at the past year in his article, "A Year in Review, of Sorts". He touches on all types of topics and his observations are always spot on. Moore, one of the latest to sign on with the prestigious golf writer website, The A Positon, has long been one of Michigan's top golf writers. Art McCafferty pulled up the rear, by noting the annual awards that Michigan golf courses have picked up this past year. He researched a variety of national golf magazine ranking, created a Michigan list and sprinkled some photos along with the listing to ensure you will have sufficient eye candy.
==================================================== *** WARNING - PARENT BRAGGING ZONE - ***WARNING ==================================================== Well it is not an Oscar or an Emmy, but in the West Coast Internet world, The Channey Award, is a big deal. Started by the Internet Channel 101 http://www.channel101.com/ , The Channy Awards were designed to honor the work being done by online actors, directors and producers. Son, Michael McCafferty http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0564530/ , won the 2010 Channy Award for Best Male Performance. So a special shout out to Mike McCafferty, who is living the dream in L. A. Mickey =============================================================================== LPGA Futures Tour rookie Shasta Averyhardt battled the knowledge that she was making history as she fought through tough weather conditions in the final round of the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament. She began the day tied for eighth place, but a difficult, wind-blown, rain-dampened round of 7-over 79 landed her outside the top 20 into a tie for 22nd. It was a disappointing finish for the 6-foot-1, former Jackson State University collegian, but it was a finish good enough for a spot in the LPGA’s Priority Category 16, just outside the full-status top-20 membership for 2011. “It was exhausting and today, I kind of choked, but I have to be happy to earn some LPGA status for next year,” said Averyhardt of Flint, Mich., who became only the fourth African-American to earn LPGA Tour membership in the LPGA’s 60-year history. “It means a lot.”
After tying her career-low round of 5-under 67 in the fourth round, Averyhardt wrestled with nerves, weariness and weather in the final round of the 90-hole marathon. She double-bogeyed the par-3 third hole on the Champions course at LPGA International, and added five more bogeys in her birdie-free round. As hard as she tried to only focus on finishing strong in tough conditions, the weight of what she was doing became increasingly more difficult as she fought to stay high on the leaderboard. Averyhardt attempted to shut down any thoughts about making LPGA history, but as she walked the fairways of LPGA International, she began to realize that her dream of falling into place behind former LPGA African-Americans Althea Gibson, Renee Powell and LaRee Sugg was coming true. “I was really nervous and I knew what was at stake,” she admitted. “I absolutely got in my own way and I wish I could have handled myself better. I kept thinking about what it would mean. I know I’m not supposed to think about that, but I did.” Averyhardt hooked her tee shot into the left water hazard on the 18th hole and took her final bogey on the last hole. Putting out, the Michigan player looked at the leaderboard. Her name that had risen among the leaders on Saturday, was gone on Sunday. Still, history was made, and Averyhardt managed to hold on enough for it to happen. “I still have a ways to go to get better, but I’m looking forward to next year,” she said. “I know there are some [African-American] girls coming up who want to follow in these same footsteps and I say, more power to them.” Lisa Mickey - LPGA Senior writer-LPGA Futures Tour Communications manager lisa.mickey@lpga.com =========================== PURE MICHIGAN CAMPAIGN =========================== Another major issue of importance to the golf course industry was the funding of the Pure Michigan ad campaign. Proponents were seeking $25 million in ongoing funding to supplement the $5 million that had already been allocated for this year. In the end, we were successful in securing a one-time $10 million dollar sum taken from the 21st Century Jobs Fund after Governor Granholm was advised that she could in fact use this left over money for that purpose. Finding a perpetual funding mechanism will be important next year, as previous proposals to fund Pure MI through car rental fees was seen by Republicans as a new tax. Taken and edited from a Golf Channel release =========================================================== 10 LARGE FOR A GOLF ADVENTURE - WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE? =========================================================== What would you do with $10,000 to spend on golf? That is the question we asked writers at The A Position, the leading golf-and-travel website.
With ten large in hand, I’d strap myself and two others from the MOTO Research Team (also known as the usual foursome) into a plane bound for Edinburgh. The fourth I’d book on the Queen Mary, giving him a head start, for the simple reason that he has a medical condition that prevents him from flying. But that’s not cheap, and he has to get back, too, so I figure we’ll have to leave the wives home this trip, sorry, Honey, but it’s only $10,000, maybe next time. Figuring we have about $4,000 left for golf, lodging, and food, that leaves $1,000 for beer. That should do it, but now thrift enters the equation. The perfect solution is to avoid the pricier golf shrines and head for East Lothian, where we’ll gorge on links golf at North Berwick, Dunbar, Gullane, maybe even Muirfield, and return home richer than Croesus. —Tom Bedell, http://tombedell.com Watching the “The Bucket List” movie recently got me thinking about my own list. No, I do not have the “Big C” like the two movie characters, but when approaching the “Big 7-0” it’s not a bad idea to dream about what you would do if you had $10,000 to spend on golf. I’d check with PerryGolf or Haversham and Baker to buy a package to New Zealand. Ever since watching the Kiwi Challenge matching Hunter Mahan, Anthony Kim, Camilo Villegas, and Sean O’Hair on television in the fall of 2009, I’ve wanted to play the Tom Doak-designed Cape Kidnappers, featuring holes never seen anywhere else along the edges of deep ravines with awe-inspiring views of the sea. Once would not be enough, but I would want to make time to play other courses like Kauri Cliffs. I wouldn’t want to miss seeing the spectacular mountains and fjords in what everyone calls one of most gorgeous places in the world. —James McAfee, http://jamesamcafee.com Taken and not edited from the "A List" at http://www.theaposition.com About The A Position The A Position.com is a network of websites featuring the world's best golf and travel writers. The term "The A Position" refers to the best place a golfer can land his tee shot. On the web, it refers to the site readers will want to land on for great golf and travel journalism. ============================= NEW SHOWS ON GLSP NETWORK ============================= Michigan Golfer Television
