CIRCULATION 16, 645 Edited by Art McCafferty artmccaf@glsp.com ============================== WE'RE TALKING ABOUT PRACTICE ============================== With apologies to Allen Iverson, the University of Michigan Board of Regents approved a proposal to construct an indoor golf practice facility last week. The $2.5 million project would be built over a portion of the current U-M golf course driving range. It would include a 10,000-square foot building with a chipping and putting area. The project would be funded from the Michigan athletic department "resources and gifts," the proposal letter submitted to the regents stated. The new proposed facility would house coaches' offices, locker rooms, a conference room, storage and a team meeting room. The regents approved the project unanimously and without discussion. Thanks a a Tip of the Tam to U of M alum, Terry Moore for sharing this with us. Note: The source for this was http://AnnArbor.com ================= OKAY, NOW WHAT? ================== Data in the newly released NSGA Report "The Sporting Goods Market in 2010" quantified what U.S. golf retailers already knew -- that 2009 was a year they'd like to forget. Consumer purchases of golf equipment reached $2.8 billion, down 19% from $3.5 billion in 2008. NSGA forecasts a 1% increase in golf equipment sales in 2010. Sales of golf clubs sold in sets reached $1.3 billion in 2009, down 26% from 2008. Sales of individual clubs (not sold in sets) fell 9% to $532.0 million in 2009. Sales of golf shoes, surveyed separately from golf equipment, experienced a 16% decline to $202.0 million. Sales (estimated, not surveyed) of golf balls were $726.7 million, and golf bags $242.1 million. In the recently released NSGA Sports Participation in 2009 report, golf participation had shown a 4% decline. Total U.S. retail sales of sporting goods (footwear, clothing and equipment), which slipped 1% in 2008, fell 3% in 2009, according "The Sporting Goods Market in 2010." For 2009, sporting goods sales reached $50.7 billion and are forecast to rise 2% to $51.5 billion for 2010. Fifteen of the 24 equipment categories surveyed by the Association last year showed declines. The balance (except for hunting and firearms, which grew 14%) showed modest (2% to 8%) increases. "The Sporting Goods Market in 2010" is a copyrighted NSGA consumer study that projects 2009 purchases of sporting goods products based on a survey of 100,000 U.S. households. National Family Opinion, Inc. (NFO) maintains the consumer panel used in the survey, which is balanced to parallel actual American household distribution as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Census, so that the data can
be projected nationally. "The Sporting Goods Market in 2010" is available for $295 for retailer/dealer members of the Association and free to manufacturer and sustaining members. For non-members, the cost is $340. The report comes in both printed and electronic formats. Doyle ================================================== MICHIGAN GOLF TOURNAMENTS - WHERE ART THOU ================================================== Michigan had become a major destination in American golf with the building of hundreds of golf courses in the 80's and 90's. To show off those courses we developed destinations like; the Gaylord Golf Mecca and America's Summer Golf Capital. Major championships, the U.S. Amateur, The U.S. Women's Open, the U.S. Publinx, the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup, propelled Michigan onto the world map of golf destinations. And while the U.S. Senior will be coming to Indianwood soon, the cancellation of the Buick, along with all of the other tournaments mentioned here harkens us to song penned by the now defunct Buick Open Tiger Wood's Pro-Am partner, Bob Seger, the "Famous Final Scene'. That scene was Tiger Woods admiring his third and probably last Buick Open. As the tour moves on to their regular stops, it was noted that the Buick dates have been taken by the Greenbrier Classic. Buick Open -1958- 2009
2009 Finale http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhOTIlLgPe4 2009 Pro Am http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLe5NQyB4MU 2007 50 Years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TbVVp5ZT9U Last year, they put a historical marker at Warwick Hills CC, to honor the 1958 beginning of the Buick Open. The marker, unfortunately, was just in time to honor the last Buick Open as General Motors shut down the Buick Open as well as the Buick Invitational in 2010 at San Diego. This was an extremely painful day for Buick, the citiizens of Grand Blanc and Flint, the membership of Warwick Hills CC and the golfers throughout Michigan. However, the last championship featured the number one golfer in the world, Tiger Woods, on his game and at the top of his class. Woods, who had longed been sponsored by Buick, came back to give the tournament a first class sign off. At the awards ceremony, Tiger remarked, " the people here have always been excited for us to come out and play, and they've always supported this event. All these years they've always come out in droves, and I'm very appreciative of that. Hopefully, we do get to come back here in this area, this region soon, because the fans here are so excited about golf. They're pretty much sports nuts anyways, and for us to come out here and play, you know, it's always been special." --------
Western Amateur at Point O'Woods - 1962 - 2008
2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vbtAkNbX4Q 2003 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBBzR85Jx1E After hosting the Western Amateur Championship for 38 straight years and 40 of the past 46, the event had run its course. During that time, Tom Weiskopf, Andy North, Ben Crenshaw, Curtis Strange, And Bean, Hal Sutton, Scott Verplank, Phil Michelson, Tiger Woods and Danny Lee had participated.. Those golfers alone, and there were many others, have won 196 PGA tournaments and 27 major championships. However, attendance had dropped considerably, from the hay days of 10,000 spectators to a ten of that in the past few years. Golf was enjoying such boom years, that many tournaments had sprung up, plus, you could see tournament golf nearly every day on the Golf Channel and other network and cable channels. The tournament now rotates among seven courses in the Chicago area. The 2010 tournament is at Skokie Country Club, Glencoe, Illinois. --------Native American Cup - 2005-2006
2006 http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/nativeamericancup/ 2005 http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/nativeamericancup/ Okay, so this was a short lived tournament, two years, but it held a lot of promise. The lack of sufficient start up capital was such that, the organizer and founder of the tournament, Henry Boulley, fell quickly into debt. Boulley, at the time an employee of Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, had organized a few tournaments for the Chippewa tribe and that became the foundation for the Native American Cup, an event modeled after the Ryder Cup. The first event featured Notah Begay, a room mate of Tiger, when they were at Stanford and a winner on the PGA tour himself. The second Cup featured a successful Native American female golfer, Cheryl Mitchell. Again, while the event was still bleeding capital, it had begun to pick up some stature among the various North American tribes. However, with a heavy debt load, Boulley had to cancel the third event. Boulley later on in the year, moved to Cailfornia and perhaps, will try to make a new beginning out there. --------Ford Senior Players Championship 1991-2006
The Ford Senior Players Championship, was first known as the Mazda Senior Tournament Players Championship when they first played it at Dearborn CC. In 1991, they changed the course to the TPC Dearborn course that Jack Nicklaus designed and it stayed there until the tournament was cancelled after the 2006 event. This was the second car sponsored tournament to be cancelled, six years after the Oldsmobile Classic at Walnut Hills. The tournament was well received during its reign and had its share of big name winners; Dave Stockton, J.C. Snead, Raymond Floyd, Craig Stadler, Peter Jacobsen, Hale Irwin and in its finale, Bobby Wadkins. Prior to Dearborn and the Mazda and Ford sponsorships, the tournament was held a Canterbury GC in Ohio and TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra in Florida. --------Treetops Par 3 Shootout - 1999 - 2006
2002 http://michigangolfer.tv/2002shows/show21/index.html When writers turn their keyboards to the Golden Days of Michigan golf, a number of names will pop up as the real change agents in the sport. These change agents not only contributed to Michigan golf, but golf on a national level. A name that will rise on everyone's list will be Rick Smith. Smith has become a top 10 golf instructor in America, a first rate golf course architect, a resort owner in Treetops and the brains behind both the Big Break and the Par 3 Shootouts. Threetops, a named credited to writer,Jack Berry, became a destination course in America after being featured on the Par 3 Shootout for eight years. The tournament featured players from both the PGA and Champions Tour and had sponsorship from ESPN, Pacific Life, Tylenol, and ING. Past winners included, Lee Janzen, Ray Floyd, Lee Trevino, Andy North, Fred Couples and Fuzzy Zoeller. Also, of note, was the million dollar hole-in-one that Lee Trevino got in 2001. While there is hope that some day it might come back, it is a remote possibility in today's economic climate. --------Farmers Charity Classic 1991 - 2004
The Farmers Charity Classic was a tournament of many names, that had thrived in Grand Rapids since 1986. Known from 1986 thru 1990 as the Greater Grand Rapids Open, the event picked up a deep pocketed sponsor in First of America Bank and became the First of America Classic from 1991 to 1998. When that sponsored pulled out, it became the Foremost Insurance Championship for two years 1999-2000 before it took on its last mantel as the Farmers Charity Classic from 2001 to 2004. During its time, played on The Highlands and then Egypt Valley courses, the winners were of superb stature in the golfing senior community. Billy Casper, Orville Moody, Don Massengale, Gibby Gilbert, George Archer, Tony Jacklin, Dave Stockton, Gil Morgan, Larry Nelson Jay Sigel and Jim Thorpe were all winners. ------Ann Arbor Futures Tour 2002 - 2005
2004 http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show14/index.html 2003 http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/show14/index.html Thr Futures tour started in Tampa, Florida in 1981 and had been in a series of transitions since then. Of late, it has been purchased by the LPGA and functions much like the Nationwide Tour, in that it is a training ground for future LPGA golfers. Lake Forest Golf course under the steady hand of Gilda Johnson held the Duramed Futures Golf Tour from 2002 – 2005. During that time, the Ann Arbor Bank provided the sponsorship. Past champions include Ju Kim of South Korea, Lindsay Wright of Australia and Lorena Ochoa of Mexico. ------Bay Mills Open Players Championship 2002 - 2005
Videos 2005 http://baymillsopen.com/video05.html 2004 http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/baymillsopen/index.html 2003 http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/baymillsopen/index.html 2002 http://michigangolfer.tv/2002shows/baymillsopen/index.html
The Bay Mills Tribe was anxious to show off their new Mike Husby designed golf course as well as some of their new gaming facilities, thus they made the move to big time tournament golf. The Canadian Tour was equally anxious to land another tournament stop on their schedule and walla, it was a match made in golf heaven and the Golf Channel. This was a very big deal for the tribe members who inhabit the very small reservation at Brimley. For four years, the eyes of America and Canada golfers were focused on the tournament and watching the players of tomorrow. At the first tournament, Jeff Quinney, former U.S. Amateur champion, took top honors. The second tournament featured young Michele Wie, who recieved a special invite from tournament director Mike Husby. They had press from all over the world for the first two days. The tournament, in its four year run, had solid champions in Quinney, Michael Harris, Chris Wisler and Rodney Butcher. However, the lose of Mike Husby as the tournament director and the continued difficulty in attracting local sponsors to share in some of the costs ultimately led to the cancellation of the tournament after four years. ------Oldsmobile Classic 1992 - 2000
Karrie Webb, Dottie Pepper and Pat Hurst were among the winners of the Oldsmobile Classic, an LPGA tournament that ran from 1992 - 2000 at Walnut Hills CC in East Lansing. The tournament featured purses of 600K and was well respected by tour players. However, with the demise of the Oldsmobile within GM's product line, the tournament when the way of Lucille. There it is, the rise and fall of some of Michigan's greatest tournaments. "Think in terms of bridges burned Think of seasons that must end See the rivers rise and fall They will rise and fall again Everything must have an end Like an ocean to a shore Like a river to a stream Like a river to a stream It’s the famous final scene" Bob Seger ========================================================= MARSH RIDGE ANNOUNCES THE DON WHITE GOLF ACADEMY ========================================================= Don White is making an immediate impact at Marsh Ridge Resort. ====================================================== OH, I COULD WRITE A SONNET ABOUT YOUR EASTER ........? GOLF SONNETS: Book Review ======================================================= Sonnet From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The sonnet is one of the many poetic forms that can be found in lyric poetry from Europe. The term "sonnet" derives from the Occitan word sonet and the Italian word sonetto, both meaning "little song" or "little sound". By the thirteenth century, it had come to signify a poem of fourteen lines that follows a strict rhyme scheme and specific structure. The conventions associated with the sonnet have evolved over its history. The writers of sonnets are sometimes referred to as "sonneteers," although the term can be used derisively. One of the best-known sonnet writers is William Shakespeare, who wrote 154 of them (not including those that appear in his plays). A Shakespearean, or English, sonnet consists of 14 lines, each line containing ten syllables and written in iambic pentameter, in which a pattern of an unemphasized syllable followed by an emphasized syllable is repeated five times. The rhyme scheme in a Shakespearean sonnet is a-b-a-b, c-d-c-d, e-f-e-f, g-g; the last two lines are a rhyming couplet. I bring all of this information to you to introduce you to James Long Hale who has chosen not to write a sonnet about an Easter bonnet, but instead writes "Golf Sonnets", His book contains 18 of them and all point to a celebration of the game.. More to the point, Hale says, " A good golf shot and a good sonnet produce a similar joy of soul that bears repeating." For those of you that would like to experience his golf sonnets, you can buy the book at his website for $18. http://golfsonnets.com =========================================== MICHIGAN GOLFER MAGAZINE - SPRING ISSUE http://issuu.com/michigan_golfer/docs/mgspring10 =========================================== Table of Contents "Shenandoah and the Michigan Golf Classic" - By Jack Berry Larry Ziegler had the Michigan Golf Classic well in hand, but the $20,000 first prize money was not in anyone's hand. This infamous golf tournament where the professional golfers were not paid after their win (the new PGA Tour eventually paid the players), made history. From then on, tournament organizers had to have tournament prize money in escrow. Jack Berry, tracts down the story of one of Michigan's little known stories. Of special note is that Berry was able to find the scorecard from the tournament and see all of the disappointed golfers, including Mike Hill, who finished, fifth. "43 Years at the Masters" - By Jack Berry Jack Berry is one of our nation's greatest golf writers and he has the plaques to prove it. Of late, he

It is yet another example of why people learning English have trouble with the language. Learning the nuances of English makes it a difficult language. (But then, that's probably true of many languages.) There is a two-letter word in English that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is 'UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as being used as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v]., It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?
