=================================================== BREHM WINS 93RD MICHIGAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP By Tim Hygh ===================================================
Runner -up Eric Wohlfield (l) and his caddy congratulate Michigan Open Champion Ryan Brehm at the 18th green while Andy Matthews, who finished 4th, looks on. Orchard Lake, Mich. — Ryan Brehm of Mt. Pleasant erased a two-shot deficit to capture his second consecutive Michigan Open championship. The 24-year old Hooters Tour player shot a final round 67 for a tournament total of 268 at the Orchard Lake Country Club. Gary Smithson of Grand Rapids had the low round of the day with a 65 that moved him into a tie for second with Eric Wohlfield of Brighton at 270. Andy Matthew of Ada, who had led the entire tournament slipped to fourth-place 273 with a final round 74. “I enjoyed coming from behind,” Brehm said. “It brought out the best in me.” “This feels really good. It’s just nice to win and beat a good field.” Brehm’s win last year was different in that he got out to an early lead in the first round and finished the tournament at 20-under par which was 8-shots better than second place. Smithson charged through the field shooting 4-under par on the front nine. The 42-year old head professional at Thousand Oaks Golf Club bogeyed the last hole however, which gave Brehm the 2stroke cushion playing two groups behind. “I feel sick to my stomach” he said after the tournament. “I’m pretty disappointed with my finish.” The other runner up, Wohlfield felt entirely different. He was ecstatic about his finish and hopes the $4,250 he earned today will help get him to the tour-qualifying event in November. “It was my worst
round of the week but I’m happy with it. It was fun to play with Andy and we were hitting 60-yards behind Brehm all day with our second shots.” Brehm earns $10,000 for his win out of the $70,000 purse. The Michigan Open will change venues next year moving to The Orchards in Washington Township. 1st 2nd 4th

Whitmore is the new Director of the Northern Michigan Golf Academy at Dunmaglas Golf Course. The move to Dunmaglas reunites Whitmore with Darin Philport, the former V.P. of operations at the Hidden River Golf & Casting Club in Brutus where Whitmore served as the General Manager/Head Golf Professional. “I am very happy to bring 18 years of experience and the Northern Michigan Golf Academy to Dunmaglas, one of the outstanding golf courses in the north,” Whitmore said. “It is truly one of the most scenic and finest golf courses in the region.” Philport said he was delighted to welcome Whitmore and his impressive resume to Dunmaglas. “Establishing the Northern Michigan Golf Academy is another step in our commitment to provide golfers with the best experiences in the game when they come to Dunmaglas,” Philport said. Whitmore said the new academy will foster an unpretentious learning environment to help golf fans enjoy the game to its fullest. “My teaching philosophy has always been very simple: I work with my students individually to come up with the most efficient and effective golf swing possible for that particular player,” Whitmore said. “With the Northern Michigan Golf Academy it is my aim to bring affordable, quality golf instruction to players of all ages and abilities, we will have a big focus on teaching juniors as they are the key to the future of this great game.” Taken and edtied from a Resort & Golf Marketing release
================================== YOU TUBE/GLSP NETWORK CHANNELS ================================== As noted in a previous MGN, we have utilized the services provided by You Tube, as a backup for GLSP''s six television channels. We appreciate the ease of operating within the system and have been a great fan of their simple statistical software, where viewership is accurately tracked. It was the first statistical software that was user friendly to us. One of the neat functions of the software for a television producer, is that you can create tag lines within the software that allow you to develop "televiision channels" for your clients. Here are a few for you to look at. While we have only been using the service since May 7, 2007, we did reach back in our archives and put up other shows, shot previous to that date. As we look at them, we can see some obvious leaps in our own quality, but also the changes that have been made by You Tube to create an environment where the video produced can really be of superb quality. For example, you can take a look at the start of the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon show we recently put up and see the crystal clear video that the You Tube Expert Settings can now give you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x87SpvDxS7s The downside to this is that it take almost 10 hours to load the video online. So we need to budget our computer time carefully. As of this date, GLSP, has put up nearly 4,000 videos since our first show in 2001. We have put 1332 shows, with a You Tube viewership just south of three quarter of a million viewers. Enjoy these easy to use "Channels" of your favorite evendt. ======================== TAKING IT TO THE STREETS ========================= ESPN is hitting the streets this summer to bring the U.S. Open experience directly to the fans. From June 17 – June 18, ESPN’s Big Screen Trucks will navigate through NYC and Chicago broadcasting live coverage, including a live leaderboard of the U.S. Open. The 26’ trucks, outfitted with 14’ x 8’ video screens and 24’ putting greens, will travel throughout each city, making select stops at sports bars, street fests and other select locations. Dan Lobring rEvolution dlobring@revolutionworld.com ====================== SEBONACK GOES SOLAR ====================== Seabonack, the Nicklaus and Doak creation on Long Island, has gone solar. They retrofitted their golf carts for $3,000 each. So far, everybody, with the exception of salespeople that supply equipment for electric cart bars are pleased at the result. Story taken from New York Times article =================== BEHIND THE GREENS =================== Episode 2 of Behind the Greens takes viewers into the world of building the PGA Village for the upcoming PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. We visited the Royal Montreal Golf Club a week before the President's Cup two years ago and were amazed by the amount of work that goes into these tournaments. Anyway, it is a nice series and should draw some viewers. http://www.pga.com/pgachampionship/2010/index.cfm ============================================= MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION UPCOMING SHOWS ============================================= Michigan Golfer Television Channel http://michigangolfer.tv Michigan Golfer You Tube Channel (234 shows) http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?pi=0&ps=20&sf=added&sa=0&sq=golfer&dm=2 93rd Michigan Open at Orchard Lake CC, Orchard Lake, MI 25th Anniversary of The Bear, Acme, MI Boyne's Tournament of Champions, Boyne Falls, MI Golfing Wisconsin - Grand Geneva Resort, Lake Geneva, WI PGA Championship, Sheboygan, WI Sweetgrass Golf Course, Harris, MI The Skins Game at The Golf Club of Huron Shores ====== EMAILS ====== "Art, After reading the last two issues of Mich Golfer (which I enjoy) found something missing in your calendar.... Larry, thanks for spotting this omission and a Tip of the Tam to you. The Michigan PGA Women's Open Pro Am at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville begins July 10th and concludes on the 1th, with the championship beginning on the 12th and concluding on the 14th. http://michigan.pga.com/index.cfm?menu=6&openitem=6 For those that have not been in attendance for this tournament, do yourself a favor and attend. Crystal Mountain is one of Michigan's most acclaimed resorts and the women put on a great show. Dave Richards forwarded me your latest Michigan Golf News with your long mention of the new course at Bandon. We were both impressed with your explanation of the Redan hole. I did want to correct you on two small things. First, it's Jim Urbina, not Dan ... no correction necessary since I'm sure he will not see it, anyway. Second, though I have asked Jim and Bruce Hepner to both start their own businesses, I am not dismantling my company as much as you might have made it sound. I've still got four associates on payroll -- Don Placek, Brian Slawnik, Brian Schneider, and Eric Iverson, who you actually played golf with in the rainstorm on High Pointe's opening day in the fall of '88. Plus, I am still ready to work with Bruce and Jim on other projects when we are busy. In a bit of Michigan-related news, we are about to start a renovation at the Country Club of Detroit, rebuilding all 18 greens and most of the tees starting July 6. Brian Slawnik will be the lead associate for that job, as well as handling the work on the Midnight Golf project which should happen in the same time frame. Brian is a Detroit native and a Michigan State turf grad [after he got a degree in architecture from the University of Virginia] ... maybe you should do an interview with him one of these days. Tom Doak Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Tom for the clarification. *Editor's Note: We had the opportunity to capture some of Michigan's golf course history, when management from the now closed High Pointe, held an "Evening With Tom Doak" a few years back. You can see the show at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1Ef64EjCSs
=================== MAGAZINE ROUNDUP =================== Golf Business No stranger to Michigan golfers, Randy Ballinger of Walnut Creek Golf Complex in Gas City, Indiana is feature on the cover of this month's Golf Business. Randy and his father decided a golf course would be a better crop for their farm and began to create the transition. Today the complex is 36 holes, all developed by the Ballinger family. More on Ballinger at http://www.golfbusinessmagazine.com/pageview.asp?doc=2160 GolfWeek The UP bought the cover of this week's GolfWeek to herald their "Perfect Foursome", Greywalls, Timberstone, Sweetgrass and You. This terrific trio of courses has been drawing some great tourism dollars from Wisconsin golfers as well as a steady stream of Lower Peninsula golfers. Four old men went into the pro shop after playing 18 holes of golf. The pro asked, 'Did you guys have a good game today?' The first old guy said, 'Yes, I had three riders today.'
The second old guy said, 'I had the most riders ever. I had five.' The third old guy said, 'I had 7 riders, the same as last time.' The last old man said, 'I beat my old record, I had 12 riders today.' After they went into the locker room, another golfer who had heard the old guys talking about their game went to the pro and said, 'I have been playing golf for a long time and thought I knew all the terminology of the game, but what is a rider?' The pro said, 'A rider is when you hit the ball far enough to get in the golf cart and ride to it.' ============================= 2010 MICHIGAN GOLF CALENDAR ============================= June 17-20 U.S. Open, Pebble Beach, California http://usga.org 22 The 25th Anniversary of The Bear Tournamnent, Grand Traverse Resort & Spa http://grandtraverseresort.com/special-events/calendar-ofevents.cfm?eventId=EV_20100513144534534202 22-26 Michigan Amateur, Oakhurst G&CC http://gam.org 26 MIAGT Open Championship 2nd Major, The Orchards Golf Club, Washington, MI http://www.miagt.com/index.php?pg=schedule July 1-4 Jamie Farr Classic, Toledo, OH http://lpga.com 10-11 Michigan PGA Women's Open Pro Am, Crystal Mountain Resort, Thompsonville http://michigan.pga.com/index.cfm?menu=6&openitem=6 11 MIAGT at Fieldstone GC, Fieldstone Golf Course, Auburn Hills, MI http://www.miagt.com/index.php?pg=schedule 12 GAM Father and Son Matches, Birmingham CC 12 -14 2010 Michigan Women's Open, Crystal Mountain Resort, Thompsonville http://michigan.pga.com/index.cfm?menu=6&openitem=6 24 MIAGT at Lyon Oaks GC, Lyon Oaks Golf Course, South Lyons, MI http://www.miagt.com/index.php?pg=schedule 26 GAM Father and Son Matches, Travis Pointe http://gam.org 26 -30 94th Women's Amateur, St. Clair River CC http://gam.org
