CIRCULATION 16, 645 Edited by Art McCafferty artmccaf@glsp.com ================== MGN ON THE ROAD ================== Acme - Grand Traverse Resort & Spa http://grandtraverseresort.com As chronicled by Terry Moore in his West Coast Report, member's of the state's golf press and special guests were invited to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. It was great fun for all and we captured a lot of interesting stories. Here are a few folks that we interviewed and they all have terrific Memories of The Bear.: Doug Grove - The Bear's first golf professional and later an employee for Nicklaus Golf. Scott Hebert - Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, golf professional and the best golfer in the state. Greg Johnson - Reporter for the Grand Rapids Press Susan Bairley - Writer for the Michigan Golfer Tim Hygh - Free Lance Journalist and Media consultant Kevin Helm - COO of the Michigan PGA J. Michael DeAgostino - Public Relations Director at the GTR&S Dave Lovejoy - Retired educator and now the Bag Drop Attendant Roger Putman - Director of Tournaments GRT&S Terry Moore - CEO SportServ and former editor of the Michigan Golfer *** Cedar - Manitou Passage Manitou Passage is the new moniker of the former King's Challenge golf course in Cedar. The King's Challenge was real in that it was like many other Traverse City area courses that market their golf courses without on site lodging. They live and die by the cash flow of their rounds played. The folks from Homestead recently purchased the property and had Palmer's firm get involved in bringing it up to the quality of a Palmer course. We did not tour the entire course, but what we saw was impressive indeed. http://www.manitoupassagegolfclub.com *** Grayling - Fox Hills GC Bob Koutnik, Owner of Fox Run, and 18 hole delightful course in Grayling. Koutnik, is also the current President of the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association. While our talk mainly concerned golf in the Grayling area, we also had the opportunity to chat with Koutnik about his first year as

President, a year that started without one of the organization's enlightened founders, John Dodge, passing. Koutnik, indicated that his two year reign will be filled with the challenges of a sour economy, continuing issues with golf's land and water use and demands. *** He indicated that they have brought Eric Rule to take over John Dodge's duties. Rule is currently the V.P. of Governmental Affairs for the Michigan Retail Industry. One of the board's promotional ideas is to have a golf day on the lawn of the State Capitol next June 11. http://www.foxruncc.com *** Midland - Sandy Ridge Golf Course Gregg Clark of Sandy Ridge GC, who is a principal of the golf course along with his father Ed, is a manager that is utilizing all of the social networking tools to create and meet demand. They have a first class web site and communicate with their clients by Twitter, Facebook, email blasts and video. GLSP has been hired to create HD versions of their highly successful golf course videos. http://www.golfsandyridge.com ===================================== WEST COAST REPORT: By Terry Moore ================================= On Monday, I attended a media gathering for the 99th Michigan Amateur being held this week at Oakhurst Golf and CC in Clarkston. (Note: 12 matches today; the semis and finals tomorrow.) The guests included Michigan Golf of Fame member and former PGA Tour player Dan Pohl who went ‘unplugged and uncensored’ at the podium and shared some interesting tidbits, such as: Despite working for NBC-TV for three years as an on-course commentator, Pohl was disappointed the network announcers last Saturday night didn’t cite that the back nine record of 30 at Pebble Beach was held by him. Tiger Woods ended up sharing the record after his sensational back nine on Saturday. Pohl readily confessed he certainly wasn’t pulling for Tiger’s eagle putt to fall on 18 for a 29. Pohl said he always played well at Pebble Beach. He tied for third in the ’82 Open, won by Tom Watson, and finished high in several Crosby Pro-Ams including a runner-up finish in 1980 losing by a shot to George Burns. He won two Michigan Amateurs in 1975 and 1977. In 1975, Pohl beat Bud Stevens in the finals at Belvedere in two extra holes. “I was able to fly the fairway bunkers on nine and 10 and just eat up the par-fives.” Pohl later said in match play he learned to keep one eye on his opponent and one eye on the golf course. “You have to know your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses in match play while still playing the golf course.” At the home state tournament he always wanted to win —the Buick Open— Pohl said one year he suffered the embarrassment of being DQ for the only time in his career. After shooting a two-under 70 he forgot to sign his scorecard. “Really stupid.” Pohl said his biggest paycheck of his career wasn’t the $126,000 for winning the 1986 World Series of Golf at Firestone. Instead, it was a runner-up check for over $130,000 at the Las Vegas Invitational. If you head out to Oakhurst today or tomorrow, club president Dean Horn recommends an ideal viewing spot for action: the berm between the 10th and 16th holes. And the 16th is a driveable parfour for added drama. ***********************************************************************

This past Tuesday, lots of fun memories were relived at the 25th anniversary of The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort. As editor of Michigan Golfer, I covered the opening of The Bear when then Director of Golf Doug Grove played with designer Jack Nicklaus. So it was nice to be paired this past week with Grove and rehash some fond times. A retired member of the Michigan PGA, Grove is now a successful business man working with for a thriving $2 billion company with a production facility in Traverse City. Like Pohl, Grove provided plenty of nostalgic nuggets during the course of a delightful and postcard perfect round: In charge of many stressful details for that historic opener with Nicklaus, Grove recalled being thrown for a last minute loop when Nicklaus went to the practice range to warm up before the round. Nicklaus looked at the practice balls and said to Grove, “Hey, Doug, I can’t hit these range balls; can’t you get me some new ones?” So Grove hurried back to his makeshift pro shop. “I was sweating bullets, huffing and puffing, but I grabbed a couple dozen new balls and hustled back to the range.” Grove played very well with Nicklaus, in fact beating him by a few shots. I recalled him shooting 72 but Grove thought it was more like a 74 or 75. In all, Grove played with Nicklaus on six different occasions at several other Nicklaus designs and ended up besting the Golden Bear three times. When it opened, The Bear was the first resort course in the state to make carts mandatory. “We used to have some very unhappy golfers when they learned about our cart policy and it was only $22.50,” said Grove. After the round on Tuesday, the invited guests were treated to a reception which included a special taped video message by Jack Nicklaus. Unable to attend the anniversary due to prior business commitments in China, Nicklaus said he had no intention of designing such a difficult layout but that’s what the owner at the time, Paul Nine, insisted upon for publicity purposes. Nine told Nicklaus, “I want to attract attention. I want to bring people here when they want to play something tough.” Nicklaus said, “Well, you got it.” With a smile, Nicklaus ended his remarks by saying, “Maybe you can have me back and I can soften it a little bit for you and make it a little bit more user-friendly for guys my age. Anyway, either way, it’s 25 years. I’m proud of it. Congratulations.” ============================================ MICHIGAN GOLFER MAGAZINE - SUMMER ISSUE ============================================ Our Summer issue of the Michigan Golfer is now online, our fifth issue in the new ISSUU format. The Michigan Golfer has been through a number of stages, print from 1983, online in 1996, television in 2001, a newsletter spin off in 2001 and now in ISSUU, a software that combined with the new iPad, allows for magazines to be downloaded and read at any time. Chris Lewis takes us on a visit to both Alma College and Aquinas College to learn about their collegiate teams. William and Brad Shelton, our father and son team of writers, team up to tell us about the new Pete Dye course at French Lick. American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) members work each day to design, renovate and maintain courses that not only conserve water, but also serve as living bodies to positively impact all aspects of the environment. A few ways design can influence water use and management include: “Firm and fast” conditions, common in the United Kingdom, can make the game enjoyable on a level not always found on North American courses. More water doesn’t necessarily mean better playing conditions. Design that takes this type of play into account can decrease water usage.

The use of non-irrigated natural areas in the design of a golf course reduces the amount of water consumed throughout the life of the golf course. Good land planning and stewardship is critical to successful water management. Incorporating natural runoff patterns as well as wetlands and storage ponds into the design helps capture and filter potential contaminants, and allows for water to replenish aquifers. A golf course architect’s understanding of the grass plant and its soil medium can increase the plant’s ability to readily process important nutrients, reducing the amount of water required to keep the grass plant healthy. "Water harvesting," capturing rain that falls on the golf course, storing it, and utilizing it when needed. The use of soil additives that hold moisture in the soil profile. Right where the roots of the grass plant make the grass a more efficient consumer of its nutrients. The actual grass plant will use less water due to a moister soil condition. ASGCA has created a free, one-page information sheet detailing the focus placed on water and the environment. Visit the ASGCA website at http://www.asgca.org for ordering information. ================================================================= BROOKWOOD GOLF & BANQUET CENTER TOURNAMENT FOR BRIDGES ================================================================= We had the opportunity to visit with Sherlynn Everly, the retiring GM of Brookwood Golf & Banquet Center http://www.imarecreation.org/brookwoodgolfclub/brookwood-home this past week. Everly, who was the race director of the Crim Festival of Races in Flint, for many years, has spent the last five years at Brookwood, a unit under the IMA umbrella. Joe Zalogy designed Brookwood Golf Club in 1938. The course, lined with great sycamore trees, has a number of bridges crossing Kearsley Creek. The bridges have seen better days and are in need of substantial repair. The tournament was a fundraiser to create and target money for immediate improvement. It was a beautiful day and the event had a nice turnout by those that have enjoyed the course for many years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX65YW1BawY =========================================================== DR. She was wearing a sexy negligee. The only trouble was, she was coming home. A girl phoned me and said, 'Come on over. There's nobody home.' I went over. Nobody was home! I went to a massage parlor. It was self-service. If it weren't for pickpockets, I'd have no sex life at all. The 43rd PGA Professional National Championship, June 27-30, is the first PGA of Americasanctioned national event to be hosted at French Lick Resort since legendary Walter Hagen captured the 1924 PGA Championship. A field of 312 PGA Professionals representing 43 states and 41 PGA Sections will compete on courses designed by two of the game's legendary golf architects – Donald Ross and Pete Dye. The 6,885-yard hilly Donald Ross Course and the demanding, majestic 7,174-yard Pete Dye Course mark the first visit by the PGA Professional National Championship to Indiana. The Championship, presented by Titleist, FootJoy and Club Car, offers a $550,000 purse and most importantly to its competitors – a crystal Walter Hagen Cup. "It's our major, the event that we look forward to each year," said defending National Champion Mike Small of Champaign, Ill., who will bid to grab a third title after a spring in which he guided the University of Illinois to a second consecutive Big Ten Conference championship. It's an honor and a privilege to be a PGA Professional and to have been able to win this Championship. We all know what this Association means and represents to many of us. It is the fabric of our family. It's a big part of our lives." Small will be joined in the talented field by 11 past Champions: John Traub of Bloomfield Township, Mich. (1980); Bill Schumaker of Columbia City, Ind., (1984), the only Indiana PGA member to win the title and who will make a record 29th appearance; Brett Upper of Phoenix, Ariz. (1990); Steve Schneiter of Sandy, Utah (1995); Jeff Freeman of Windermere, Fla., (1999); Tim Thelen of College Station, Texas (2000, '03); Wayne DeFrancesco of Columbia, Md. (2001); Barry Evans of Charleston, W.Va. (2002); Ron Philo Jr. of Amelia Island, Fla. (2006); Chip Sullivan of Troutville, Va. (2007); and Scott Hebert of Traverse City, Mich. (2008). *** Crystal Mountain Director of Golf, Brad Dean makes his return to the PGA Professionals National Championship, June 27-30, at French Lick Resort in Indiana. This will be Dean’s second trip to the National Championship in the last three years, qualifying for the tournament with a fifth place finish in the 2009 Michigan PGA Championship. He earned an exemption into last year’s National Championship as well but was unable to make the trip west due to

a busy schedule as an instructor. In 2008, Dean finished among the top 15 at Reynolds Plantation in Georgia which earned him a trip to the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club. The 2008 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club marked a series of firsts for the twotime Michigan PGA Teacher of the Year. It was his first major, his first PGA Tour event and he hit the first ball off the first tee to open the first round of the championship. Just a week before the PGA’s fourth major championship, Brad and his wife Kendra welcomed their fourth child, Brandon, into the family. We appreciate the ease of operating within the system and have been a great fan of their simple statistical software, where viewership is accurately tracked. It was the first

statistical software that was user friendly to us. One of the neat functions of the software for a television producer, is that you can create tag lines within the software that allow you to develop "televiision channels" for your clients. Here are a few for you to look at. While we have only been using the service since May 7, 2007, we did reach back in our archives and put up other shows, shot previous to that date. As we look at them, we can see some obvious leaps in our own quality, but also the changes that have been made by You Tube to create an environment where the video produced can really be of superb quality. For example, you can take a look at the start of the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon show we recently put up and see the crystal clear video that the You Tube Expert Settings can now give you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x87SpvDxS7s The downside to this is that it take almost 10 hours to load the video online. So we need to budget our computer time carefully. As of this date, GLSP, has put up nearly 4,000 videos since our first show in 2001. We have put 1332 shows, with a You Tube viewership just south of three quarter of a million viewers. Enjoy these easy to use "Channels" of your favorite evendt.
