===================================================== BEURMANN WINS MICHIGAN PGA IN PLAYOFF: By Tim Hygh ===================================================== Ron Beurmann of Jackson came from four strokes behind with two holes to play to win the 89th Michigan PGA Professional Championship in a playoff. The 50-year old Director of Golf at The Country Club of Jackson was two strokes behind entering the final round and won the tournament on the second hole of a three man playoff. “It’s a miracle, it’s a miracle” the man known for his ball striking and poor putting said. “The key for me winning this week is the fact I only missed two five-foot putts this week.” John Seltzer of Ann Arbor held a two stroke lead entering the final round at Eagle Eye Golf Club. He expanded the lead to three shots after seven holes and it looked like Seltzer would cruise to a wire to wire win. Sean Winters of Bloomfield Hills Country Club started the final round five shots behind Seltzer but got hot in the middle of the round with an eagle on 14 and a birdie on 15. It then became a three horse race. By the time the lead group headed to the infamous island green par three 17th hole Seltzer was nursing a one-stroke lead over Winters and a four-stroke lead over Beurmann. Seltzer found the water with “ a 155 yard pitching wedge” on the 142 yard hole, Winters three putted for bogey and Beurmann made par. “I was relaxed at 17 because I thought I was out of it.” Beurmann said. On the final hole of regulation, Winters drove his tee shot into the water on the par five. He ended with a double bogey. Seltzer’s layup shot found the edge of a railroad tie. He blasted out and was left with a difficult wedge shot that went past the hole and he ended with a double bogey. Beurmann, presumably out of the tournament birdied the hole and all three players finshed regularion at 10-under par. Winters was eliminated on the first playoff hole when he again hit his tee shot into the water and ended with double bogey. Seltzer bogeyed the second hole of the playoff and Beurmann’s par was good enough to win the $7,000 first place prize and shake a 12-year draught of winning a major.” “I never gave up but it’s amazing how many times I’ve walked away from a tournament and said this is it because of my putting.” “I’ve seen some crazy stuff over the years but never for me and it’s great to win in front of my friends and peers and Scott Hebert who has won this tournament four years in a row. 1) Ron Beumann Country Club of Jackson 2) Sean Winters Bloomfield Hills CC John Seltzer Polo Fields of Ann Arbor 4) Scott Hebert Grand Traverse Resort Lee Houttman Grand Traverse Resort

==================== MGN ON THE ROAD: =================== Kohler, Wisconsin Wisconsin Golf with Peter Allen and Mike Duff We taped a Michigan Golfer Television show on Wisconsin Golf while there for the PGA. For the past couple of decades, Peter Allen, Mike Duff, Mike Beckman and I have been getting together once a year to golf, and Wisconsin has been our usual place. However, we have ventured to Florida, Arizona, Michigan and Ireland on other occasions and have had a blast everywhere we have gone. That said, Peter Allen, Michigan's Horning's Representative and long time contributor to GLSP, and Mike Duff chat about some of their travels. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTmzwSPmA7w ==================================================================== BOYNE'S STEPHEN KIRCHER TALKS ABOUT SKIING, PURE MICHIGAN AND GOLF ==================================================================== We caught up with Stephen Kircher during the Tournament of Champions that was being held at Boyne Mountain. Kircher and Boyne provide significant employment for people in the north and we felt he could update us on Boyne, the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, the Pure Michigan campaign and how golf and skiing are fairing in this state. Jennie McCafferty does the interview. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8ecYP9c_cc =============================================================================== THE FIRST TEE PROGRAM OF BENTON HARBOR IS FEATURED AT THE GOLF CLUB OF HARBOR SHORES OPENING =============================================================================== Terry Moore caught up with Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., the chief executive officer of The First Tee, while attending the Grand Opening of The Golf Club at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor. The interview occurred against the background of four legendary golfers, course architect, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Johnny Miller and Arnold Palmer, playing an exhibition on the new course. Carter Sherline handled the camera work for the video. Enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAz54B34rKM =================================================================== BOOK REVIEW: "BOYNE: PEOPLE, HISTORY, MEMORIES" - By Molly Clark Kircher =================================================================== Michigan has been blessed with wonderful lakes, temperate climate, rich soils and resort businesses that introduce these assets to our citizens and those from out of state. Boyne Resorts, a company that now has resorts in New England, Michigan, Montana, Washington, Utah and Vancouver, British Columbia, started in Boyne Falls, 62 years ago. Everett Kircher, who has been inducted into numerous Michigan Hall of Fames that honor golf, skiing, travel, fishing and resorts pioneers, began the start of what is now a ski industry that serviced 3.6 million skiers last year, with a mountain that cost him a buck. This is but one of countless stories you will find in Molly Clark Kircher's book, "Boyne: People, History, Memories" http://www.amazon.com/Boyne-People-History-Memories-Kircher/dp/0615265154 While there are numerous books on Michigan history, for those that are in to golf, skiing and resort life, this is a must read.
We caught up with Molly Kircher, while at Boyne covering their Tournament of Champions. Jennie McCafferty does the interview; http://michigantravel.tv =============== MOORE MIRTH =============== Tim Vine has been crowned king of the one-liners after one of his gags was named the best joke of the Edinburgh Fringe. The top 10 festival funnies were judged to be: 1) Tim Vine "I've just been on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. I'll tell you what, never again." 2) David Gibson "I'm currently dating a couple of anorexics. Two birds, one stone." 3) Emo Philips "I picked up a hitch hiker. You've got to when you hit them." 4) Jack Whitehall "I bought one of those anti-bullying wristbands when they first came out. I say 'bought', I actually stole it off a short, fat ginger kid." 5) Gary Delaney "As a kid I was made to walk the plank. We couldn't afford a dog." 6) John Bishop "Being an England supporter is like being the over-optimistic parents of the fat kid on sports day." 7) Bo Burnham "What do you call a kid with no arms and an eyepatch? Names." 8) Gary Delaney "Dave drowned. So at the funeral we got him a wreath in the shape of a lifebelt. Well, it's what he would have wanted." 9) Robert White "For Vanessa Feltz, life is like a box of chocolates: Empty." 10) Gareth Richards "Wooden spoons are great. You can either use them to prepare food. Or, if you can't be bothered with that, just write a number on one and walk into a pub…" ============ TRUE STORY =========== A true story, told to me by a friend who works at a muny: an older couple (80s?) came to the pro shop and the woman was bleeding on her face. Her husband said she had tripped over her purse and fallen on her face. She was bleeding from a cut on her forehead. Fortunately another player, a young woman, was at the shop and went into action. She was a nursing student and got the first aid kit in the pro shop and cleaned and bandaged the woman’s wounds. Then she told the woman’s husband to take her to the hospital because she would need stitches. The couple went to their car but a few minutes later, the husband returned to the pro shop. “Could we have two rain checks? It happened on the third hole,” he said. A Tip of the Tam to Jack Berry, for passing along this juicy morsel of humor. ====================== FREE DAY AT THE LINKS ====================== Nearly a dozen of Southeastern Michigan’s finest golf clubs have signed on to participate in this year’s Free Day at the Links, a “thank you” gesture by radio and television golf show host Jeff Lesson to the golfing community who have supported his Lesson On Golf program for many years. The second annual free day will benefit the First Tee of Detroit program and the presenting sponsor is
Ameriprise Financial Services Inc. "Our first year was such a tremendous success, given the free golf, quality of courses and The First Tee as the beneficiary, it was a no brainer to do it again" said Lesson, a golfing enthusiast who founded the Lesson on Golf program and writes a newspaper column. "The First Tee does so much for these kids we are just thrilled to be a part of this." Golfers must call the participating course of their choice to register for a tee time. Those who prefer to walk the course will do so free of charge. Cart riders will pay a minimum donation of $20 that will go to the First Tee program. Some courses may not accept tee times until one week prior to the event. Lisa Woodcox, executive director of The First Tee of Detroit commended Lesson for coming up with an idea that gives so much back to the community. "We are so appreciative of Jeff Lesson for creating this day that benefits local golfers, golf courses, and youth participants in the First Tee of Detroit," Woodcox said. "It's wonderful to see the Metro Detroit's golf community support a program that has so positively impacted the lives of thousands of children over the past 12 years through our life and skills programs." The First Tee of Detroit is an initiative of the World Golf Foundation. It conducts programming at 12 locations across Metro Detroit. Each year, more than 1,000 youth participants have the opportunity to learn to play the game while learning leadership skills, life skills, and interpersonal communication skills. Since its inception in 1997, The First Tee has introduced the game of golf and its values to more than 2.9 million participants in 49 states. The courses committed so far to offer a free day include: Tanglewood, South Lyon. 248 486 3355 Moose Ridge, South Lyon. 248 446 9030 The Majestic at Lake Walden, Howell. 800 762 3280 Lyon Oaks,Wixom . 248 437 1488 The Westwynd, Oakland Twp. 248 608 7820 Whispering Pines, Pinckney 734 878 0009 Springfield Oaks, Davisburg . 248 625 2540 Fox Creek, Livonia, 248 771 3400 Whispering Willows, Livonia. 248 476 4493 Idyl Wyld , Livonia. 734 464 6325 Strategic Fox, Fox Hills, Plymouth 734-453-7272 Taken and edited from a Resort and Golf Marketing release ================================================================= RYAN BREHM NAMED M.S.U. ASSISTANT GOLF COACH: By Michael Caples ================================================================= During his time at Michigan State, Ryan Brehm dominated the Spartan record book. Now, he will be trying to help others break those records. Brehm, who holds MSU records for career stroke average and career wins, is returning to East Lansing to serve as an assistant coach to the Spartans’ men’s golf team just two years after graduating. “I’m just excited,” Brehm said. “I’m excited to be part of the university and part of the program again.
I’m going to have a little bit of a different role, but I think I’m ready for that role, and I’m excited for the challenge.” The former All-American has been competing on the NGA Hooters Tour this year, and has made seven cuts out of ten tournaments. He successfully defended his title at the Michigan Open, becoming the first player to win back-to-back titles since Scott Hebert tallied four in a row from 1999 to 2002. Brehm plans to keep competing on the professional level while helping with the MSU team, which he says will be more of a benefit than a hindrance. “I’m still going to go to PGA Tour qualifying school,” Brehm said. “I’ll schedule to where during our off weeks and during our down time, I’ll be playing. I’ll be playing all summer long, and I’m going to keep playing at the professional level as well. “I think it’s going to be a benefit to me to be practicing with these guys. I think that for my own game, there’s a lot that I can learn just being on the other side. Talking guys through shots, and strategic situations that have kind of helped me. I won’t be playing as much as I used to, you know full-time traveling every week, but that’s a good thing for me and I see it as more as a positive than a negative.” Brehm will certainly bring experience to the MSU program; his individual and team accolades throughout his college years raise the debate of him being the best golfer to play for the Spartans. Brehm led MSU to back-to-back Big Ten titles, and was named the program’s 13th All-American in 2008. A four-time member of the All-Big Ten team, he won five individual tournaments, and he placed second at the Big Ten Championship three times. He holds Spartan records for 18-hole score (64 twice) and 72-hole score (203). The Mt. Pleasant native said that he had considered coaching at his alma mater before, and when the opportunity arose, he took full advantage. “It’s something that I’ve thought about for a little while,” Brehm said. “But you know the position was available, and I’ve developed a friendship with Mark Hollis, the athletic director, and you know it just worked out that we happened to be talking about it and we thought it would both be a good thing for the program and for me.” In a statement released by MSU, Hollis said that he has high hopes for the golf program, especially with Brehm’s added expertise. "I would like to welcome Ryan back to the Michigan State athletic department," Hollis said. "I have the highest expectations of both the men's and women's golf programs. Ryan's Michigan roots and tremendous success as a student-athlete, in addition to his current professional experience, will be a great asset to Michigan State golf for a long time." Yet Brehm maintains that he is in no way giving up his dream to play on the PGA Tour. He said that in his talks with Hollis, the MSU AD expressed his hope that Brehm could one day represent his school at the highest level of professional golf. “We both think that it would be best for the university for me to play the PGA Tour,” Brehm said. “I think that would be the best thing for me and for the golf program, because that kind of gets our name out there, Michigan State. I would still be a part of it, just that the role may change.”

It was excellent. I LIVED every word describing the Dustin Johnson final hole in the final round, having watched it on TV as it happened. (Mark Wilson's follow-up announcement on TV, that all areas covered with sand were to be played as BUNKERS..and every PLAYER received a copy with that information, settled the issue for me. HOWEVER, it was EXCELLENT to carry the report by Bill Shelton, whom I most highly respect. It expressed the feelings of the millions who watched, and let us know that we were not crazy. I LOVE YOUR MAGAZINE! xx Betty Richart

Thanks to the good folks at http://www.newluxuryitems.com, such a list exists. Nice to see Whistling Straits made the list at No. 9 and I would imagine the the price will go up substantially next year after all of the incredible ink it got. Its amazing how many people still visit the Threetops course at Treetops after being featured for so many years. In a chat with Boyne VP, Bernie Friedrich, during the Tournament of Champions, he stated that the bookings for Boyne Highlands have been very strong, due to its appearance on the Golf Channel's Big Break show and the ad they have been running in targeted markets. I digress. Here is the list. Shadow Creek, Las Vegas Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, Nevada is the most expensive golf course with a entry fee of $ 500 for a round. Renowned architect Tom Fazio (and one can be assured that they get the best golfing experience here) has designed the masterpiece. Pebble Beach, California Pebble Beach Golf Links in California is the second most expensive golf course with an entry fee of $ 475 for a round. The golf course has been designed by Douglas Grant and Jack Neville and has thrilled golfers across the world from the year 1919. Kingsbarns Golf Links, St. Andrews, Scotland The Kingbarns Golf Links at St. Andrews in Scotland is the eighth most expensive golf course with entry fees of $300 for one round. Whistling Straits, Haven, Wisconsin The Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin is the ninth most expensive golf course with entry fee of $ 300 for one round. The golf course throws back the freshness of Ireland sculpted in the Wisconsin. The golf course has two courses and has hosted several PGA championships. Barton Creek Foothills and Canyon, Austin, Texas The Barton Creek Foothills and Canyon located in Austin, Texas is the tenth most expensive golf courses with entry fees of $ 298 for one round. Source: http://www.newluxuryitems.com/10-most-expensive-golf-courses.html =================================== THAD GUTOWSKI - THE CYBER-GEEZER =================================== Part 3 of a series In earlier editions I tried to illustrate just how gigantic 3W has become and the challenges we are faced with getting our piece of the viewer’s attention. It is by any measure, a daunting task requiring much more than a casual effort. The mission is to make your email message stand-out from a mind-boggling crowd. But if you add something other than a low-ball price you are on your way. I presume you have come up with the unique characteristics that separate your facility from the many others who are chasing essentially the same market. And your content meets the criteria I pointed out last week: short, sweet and simple.
If some or all can be found on your web-site add a hyper-link in or near the body copy. Chances are the viewer is just going to scan the page so brevity is demanded. In fact, try to have three links in your message that support something you stated: lessons, junior programs, outings, golf shop, anything to add additional interest to your main message. If the link takes the reader away from your communiqué, place it toward the end or bottom of the main content, because chances are once the viewer leaves your page they won’t return. You have now developed relevant content with catchy sub-titles that your viewer should be interested in reading. To make this easier be sure not to jam everything close together but spread it out with a reasonable amount of white space. Forget about using a colored background of any shade! Now let’s include a clear call to action. What do you want the viewer to do? Answer the how, when, where and why in a cordial manner. Don’t forget he/she is a guest. Assume nothing! Make the message more appealing with an appropriate header that is not too large or too “busy,” and consider adding a photo or two to the body copy. Along with the golf course photo try something with human interest: staff, golfers, you, whatever is appropriate and appealing. But always remember you are doing all of this to gain the interest of the viewer and to keep them on your message until the end. And be sure to proof your copy and have someone else do so as well, to be sure the syntax is good. And don’t forget to hit that marvelous creation – the spell-checker. Before this incredible service came along I proofed my work by reading the copy backwards. This may be putting the horse behind the cart but I am presuming you are using quality email marketing software. There are a ton of them out there from ultra-simple to where one requires a graduate degree in computer science to get by the opening page. Constant Contact is very popular and relatively low cost. Course-Logix, a Michigan based outfit has geared their approach exclusively to golf courses. I have worked with both and like how Course-Logix does business. Unlike others who do everything on-line, they will meet with you at your facility. But let’s not forget any program is only the messenger, you are solely responsible for the message. Email is today’s version of the Western Union messenger in a khaki uniform with a right leg pants clip, on a one-speed Silver King with balloon tires! In future editions we will address other considerations to get you email opened, read, acted upon and hopefully sent on to someone else. Reminder: I am still looking for some winners in our email marketing contest. Please send your creation to cybergeezer@inbox.com The following email was received on 8/19/10 from a municipal course in Southeast Michigan. It wins my Booby Prize for the week. Do you know why? ================== MINZEY'S MUSINGS ================== Georgia The owner of a golf course in Georgia was confused about paying an invoice, so he decided to ask his secretary for some mathematical help. He called her into his office and said, "You graduated from the University of Georgia and I need some
