The Commencement Issue
S
2015
ome of us remember freshman orientation in East Quad Residence Hall, its pre-renovation character still alive. Some transferred here not too long ago and are leaving without ever stepping foot in East Quad. Some could tell you exactly where they were — what they were doing, smelling, tasting — when Trey Burke made the shot against Kansas, because, to them, that was a defining moment in their college memories. For others, that moment came in the news of Detroit’s bankruptcy filing, DeBoer v. Snyder or Ferguson. Our paths are colored and shaped by these defining moments. Like the brush strokes comprising Vincent Van Gogh’s painting “Starry Night,” our individual pigments absorb and reflect the light of these events differently. Our myriad shades of blue and yellow flow alongside one another, each unique. But seen at a distance, they create a unified scene of what it was like to be part of the Class of 2015.
