D E S S VICTORS FOR MICHIGAN SURPA

CAMPAIGN GOAL ACHIEVED AT ROSS! 16,900 alumni & friends gave to Michigan Ross during the campaign (2013-2018). $415 million was donated. That’s $15 million above our campaign goal! Gifts support strategic priorities for student support, engaged learning, bold ideas, & campus enhancements.

Final Campaign Numbers - Published April 2019

Here’s the breakdown of gift allocations: • $94M - student support (scholarships) • $123M - engaged learning (programming) • $63M - bold ideas (research, faculty, discretionary support) • $135M - campus enhancements (facilities) 58% of gifts were $100 or less, helping to fill the gaps for funding priorities. Nearly 850 people gave annually throughout the Victors for Michigan campaign at Ross. Every gift helps make a world of difference at Michigan Ross.

A Special Thank You & Congratulations from Ross Dean Scott DeRue To the Michigan Ross Community: Thank you. Thanks to your dedication and extraordinary support, the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business has exceeded its incredibly ambitious $400 million Victors for Michigan campaign goal. We did it by receiving gifts from 16,900 donors—our alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends—all whom firmly believe in our mission of creating a better world through business. Gifts ranged from small, first-time donations of $5 to the Ross Annual Fund to major gifts of $100 million for strategic initiatives. Thanks to your generosity, Michigan Ross is able to invest and elevate our impact in four key strategic areas: student support and scholarships, transformational learning experiences, bold ideas and thought leadership, and campus enhancements. Each of these priorities is an essential element of our Leaders & Best strategy at Michigan Ross. For example, strengthening our student support and scholarships enables us to bring the best and brightest students to Michigan Ross, whatever their financial background. With support for educational programming, we are able to offer an unprecedented portfolio of action-based learning experiences and global immersions that ensure our school is developing the next generation of business leaders. With contributions toward faculty support, we are able to generate new ideas and insights into how businesses can elevate performance, drive economic prosperity, and enable social mobility globally. And with your support for campus improvements, we are privileged to work in one of the most beautiful, innovative, and cohesive business school campuses in the world. Every day I am humbled and proud to be part of this community. Working together, we reached— and surpassed—our fundraising goal, and together we will continue to make Michigan Ross the kind of school donors want to support, students want to attend, and faculty and staff want to join. Together, we will continue to make an incredible difference for the students we serve and the world at large.

Thank you again, and Go Blue!

STUDENT SUPPORT: SCHOLARSHIPS AT WORK

O

ver the course of the Victors for Michigan campaign, which kicked off at the University of Michigan in 2013, friends and alumni of Michigan Ross contributed more than $94 million in gifts dedicated to student support and scholarships at the school. Here are just some of many examples of the impact these generous gifts have had on the Ross community:

Raj Reddy Memorial Scholarship Fund A second-year analyst at JPMorgan Chase & Co, Rajesh C. Reddy, BBA ‘14, was well known at Ross for his upstanding character, friendliness, inquisitive personality, and for being a proud ambassador for all things Michigan. When Reddy passed away unexpectedly in 2015, his family and Class of 2014 classmates established the Raj Reddy Memorial Scholarship in his honor. The scholarship aids students who share the same joy for Ross and life in general as Raj, but who may require assistance to fulfill their dreams. In addition, Raj’s parents, Dr. Keshava and Bharathi Reddy, dedicated a study room at Michigan Ross in their son’s memory. Mike & Sue Jandernoa Scholarship Fund Earlier in 2018, Mike Jandernoa, BBA ‘72, and his wife Sue gave a $4.3 million gift to the University of Michigan, with $1 million of the gift being used to establish a scholarship fund at Michigan Ross. The scholarship fund offers need-based scholarships to incoming Michigan Ross undergraduate students. The remainder of their gift went towards efforts to improve math proficiency of Michigan children through a partnership with the University of Michigan. The Jandernoas

have a history of generous support to U-M. In 2007, Mike Jandernoa received the David B. Hermelin Award for Fundraising Volunteer Leadership — U-M’s highest honor bestowed upon donors and volunteers. Louise S. & Robert M. Finlayson Family Scholarship Established in 1990 in honor of Louise S. and Robert M. Finlayson, BBA ’47, MBA ’48, the Finlayson Family Scholarship is supported every year by generous gifts from all of Louise and Robert’s children — Ann, Robert, Jr., Sarah, Mary, and Roderick — all of whom also hold degrees from Michigan Ross. The scholarship supports both Ross MBA and BBA students. Scott & Susan Davidson Scholarship Fund for International Study Now in its fifth year as a valuable endowed fund at Michigan Ross, the Scott & Susan Davidson Scholarship Fund for International Study helps foster internationally astute business leaders at Ross in two overarching, important ways: 1) by supporting the development and implementation of innovative global experiences at Ross and 2) by providing

scholarships for students to participate in those experiences. In 2017 alone, more than 1,000 Ross students received funding to pursue global study opportunities in more than 50 countries —including a recent leadership development program in Tanzania led by Michigan Ross Dean Scott DeRue. The fund was established with gifts from multiple members of the Davidson Family, including Scott and Susan Davidson, parents to Ryan, BBA ‘15, and Tyler, BBA ‘17, and Marvin Davidson, AB ‘57, MBA ‘59, and his wife Mary. Preparation Initiative Over the past several years—thanks in large part to defining gifts from Ari Spar, AB ‘89, and Howie Epstein, BBA ‘93, Michigan Ross has developed several Academic Success programs and experiences to expand access to business education and open the doors of Ross to those who may not have seen themselves as potential business students or thought the world of higher education was within reach. For example, the Preparation Initiative— which provides a long-term learning community for students who intend to apply to the Ross BBA program— recently took 22 students on a career trek to New York City to visit some of the biggest companies in the world and meet with executives and managers to hear about the opportunities that exist for students just like them. Tauber Institute Scholarships To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Tauber Institute for Global Operations, benefactor Joel Tauber presented the institute with a $1.75 million gift to endow scholarships. The Tauber Institute is a joint venture between the Ross School of Business and the College of Engineering, working together with a wide range of industry partners to facilitate cross-disciplinary education in global operations management. Need-Based Scholarships Established at the beginning of the Victors for Michigan campaign in 2013, the Tim & Edith Twomey Scholarship (see right) is one of many need-based scholarships that make a Ross business education a reality for students who may not have otherwise had this opportunity. Michigan Ross is exceedingly grateful for all donors give toward Student Support at Ross. These gifts truly are helping to foster Leaders & Best from all walks of life.

Coming to Michigan is perhaps one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am so fortunate to attend such a great institution that has provided so many opportunities for me to grow as a student, a professional, an individual, and a leader. As I look toward the next stage in my life, I hope to incorporate the things I learn in school in my career. I aspire to a career in which I can also find ways to drive change within organizations and communities; I will have the passion to drive impactful and purposeful businesses. As the son of immigrants and the first in my family to attend college, my scholarship helped alleviate the financial burden of being an out-of-state student at a prestigious public institution. The support allowed me to focus more on academics, on professional development, on having a great college experience—without worry about financing my education. I am grateful for the impact the donors helped make in my life, and I appreciate their commitment toward giving back to better the Ross student community.” Andrew Mei, BBA ’18 Tim & Edith Twomey Scholarship Fund Recipient

ENGAGED LEARNING: PROGRAMMING EXCELLENCE

D

uring the five-year Victors for Michigan campaign, generous donors gave $123 million to make engaged learning a priority at Michigan Ross. Their donations allow Ross to define the future of business education by launching new innovations in action-based learning, transforming learning practices, connecting student experiences more directly to career paths, and more. Read on for some examples.

The Seigle Entrepreneurial Innovation Fund Mark Seigle, BBA ‘80, and his wife, Robin, have awarded generous funding to students with an idea for a missiondriven business that prioritizes social considerations. The Seigle Entrepreneurial Innovation Fund, which is part of the Seigle Impact Track of the Michigan Business Challenge, has recently given more than $26,000 in prizes to students. A recent winner, PedalCell, developed bicycle power for cell phones. Other finalists included a digital platform that seamlessly managed parental leave for expectant mothers and fathers, and a web and mobile app that made it easy for families in need to locate and learn about their nearest free food assistance programs.

Och Initiative for Women in Finance Donor support is also part of a new initiative to increase the representation of women in the finance industry. Jane Och, BBA/MAcc ’86, and Daniel Och established the Och Initiative for Women in Finance through a gift from the Jane and Daniel Och Family Foundation. The initiative now offers an array of educational experiences that educate BBA students about opportunities in finance that open doors to fulfilling, high-impact careers. Zell Founders Fund To further the development of entrepreneurship programs for students and alumni, the Zell Family Foundation pledged $60 million to the Samuel Zell

and Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, which was established with an endowment of $10 million in 1999. This includes $10 million dedicated to the Zell Founders Fund, which is investing in new student business ventures. The Fund is designed for all U-M students, graduating or in their final year of their undergraduate or graduate program, who are seeking funding to support a startup they wish to continue after graduation. “Entrepreneurs have always been a primary driver of growth for this country,” Sam Zell, AB ‘63, JD ‘66, LLD Hon ‘05, said at the time. “I believe that fostering entrepreneurial education is an investment in the future.” Thomas C. Jones Initiative for Innovation in Undergraduate Education Donor support has changed the definition of undergraduate learning at Ross. It started in 2005, when Thomas C. Jones, BBA ‘68, MBA ‘71, retired president of CIGNA Retirement & Investment Services and Director of our BBA program in 2003-04, created the Thomas C. Jones Center for BBA Education with the goal of redesigning the BBA curriculum. The Center is now called the Thomas C. Jones Initiative for Innovation in Undergraduate Education, and throughout the last several years, the Initiative has been improving and expanding its curriculum to better meet the changing needs and interests of undergraduate students at Michigan Ross. Today the new BBA curriculum combines core business fundamentals while still giving students the freedom to pursue individual interests. Sanger Leadership Center In 2015, Michigan Ross alumnus Stephen W. Sanger, MBA ’70, and Karen Sanger made a defining gift of $20 million to establish the Sanger Leadership Center and continue the legacy of leadership development to which Steve has devoted his career. The Sanger Leadership Center engages students at Ross and throughout U-M in a variety of learning experiences that empower them to lead with empathy, drive, integrity, and courage. The Center offers an extensive porfolio of impactful, action-based learning programs, including orientation programs, leadership challenges, and community groups such as these: • Transforming BBA Orientation: In 2017, again thanks to donor support, the Sanger Leadership Center debuted a new orientation format for incoming

sophomore BBA students called G.E.A.R. UP, which stands for Get Educated About Ross. With the Center as their guide, about 600 students embarked on a day-long adventure that enabled them to create bonds with their peers, explore the Ross campus, and most importantly, articulate their individual leadership strengths and visions. • Leadership Crisis Challenge: In 2018, graduate and undergraduate students both engaged in their own separate Leadership Crisis Challenge events. During these high-pressure, fast-paced, 24-hour simulations, students step into the role of senior executives facing a major, high-stakes organizational challenge. • Story Lab: In 2017-18, a record 160 students participated in the Center’s Story Lab, through which they gave meaningful talks about personal experiences. More than 1,300 people attended public storytelling events. The Center’s Story Lab programming provides students with an in-depth opportunity to practice communicating with impact. This is a critical component of business leadership, as executives are often called upon to share their vision and deliver inspiring presentations in their work. • Ross Leaders Academy: With generous support from the Deloitte Foundation, Sanger launched the Ross Leaders Academy in 2015. Now entering its fourth year, this advanced program enables finalyear undergraduate and graduate students to make leadership development a primary focus of their education.

BOLD IDEAS: IMPACTFUL RESEARCH

ince 2013, Michigan Ross donors gave $63 million toward research and faculty support. Thanks to these gifts, Ross was able to advance important research, recruit and maintain top faculty, offer development opportunities to junior faculty, and support important new strategic initiatives. Here are some examples:

Research to Help with Flint’s Water Crisis Eric Schwartz, an Arnold M. and Linda T. Jacob Faculty Fellow and Assistant Professor of Marketing, combined his research with predictive modeling to help authorities better identify which homes in Flint, MI may have dangerous lead pipes. Knowing which homes to inspect can reduce the cost of replacing their pipes with safer ones and help in overall efforts to rid the city of lead. Research to Help Decrease Opioid Overdoses Professor Thomas Buchmueller, the Waldo O. Hildebrand Professor of Risk Management and Insurance, studied a decade’s worth of Medicare data and discovered a potential solution to decrease the number of opioid overdoses in the United States. The proposed solution, requiring doctors to check a statewide opioid prescription database before issuing a new painkiller prescription, has resulted in fewer prescriptions and overdoses.

Svetlich Professorship Michigan Ross Professor Ravi M. Anupundi was recently appointed to the Colonel William G. & Ann C. Svetlich Professorship of Operations Research & Management, which was established at Michigan Ross in 2016 with a gift from the late Colonel William G. Svetlich, MBA ‘60. Prof. Anupundi’s research areas include supply chain management, strategic sourcing, supply chain risk management, and much more. Colonel Svetlich’s gift also generously supports the Center for Value Chain Innovation, which invites industry partners to engage with projects ranging from research to executive education to summer team projects and more. The Center for Value Chain Innovation provides thought leadership, industry engagement, and education regarding innovation and excellence in value chains to address critical, complex business and societal issues.

Hallman Funding for Technology Research Several Ross faculty benefit from a generous gift from Michael Hallman, BBA ’66, MBA ’67, and his wife, Mary Kay, that directly supports faculty research and teaching activities related to electronic business and new economies. The couple also created the Michael R. and Mary Kay Hallman Endowed Fund for Technology. Michigan Ross is known throughout the world as a leading innovator in business education. The Hallman Fund endorses and supports this dedication to innovation, and allows the school to respond to the demands of change in the business world. Kinnear Professorship The Thomas C. Kinnear Professorship was established in 2018 to honor the legacy of Tom Kinnear, PhD ‘72, Professor Emeritus of Marketing and Founding Co-Director of the Zell Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. The professorship was an incredible group effort, made possible through the contributions of more than 250 past Ross students, other U-M alumni, faculty, and staff. Tom’s wife Connie Kinnear, AB ‘71, MBA ‘82, and son Jamie Kinnear, MBA ‘01, helped to spearhead the fundraising campaign. Award-Winning Faculty More than 40 awards and honors were given to Ross faculty for their contributions to scholarly research last year. For example, Gretchen Spreitzer, the Keith E. and Valerie J. Alessi Professor of Business Administration, was honored with a 2018 Distinguished Scholar Award from the Academy of Management for her work in the field of Organizational Development.

FACULTY ACCOLADES Here are a few of MANY Michigan Ross faculty achievements from the 2017-18 Academic Year: • Worked on nearly $10 million of sponsored research this past year

Business+Impact Alumni gifts have been transformative in other areas as well, including support for Business+Impact, a new initiative at Michigan Ross that provides students with practical skills and insights to tackle complex social challenges and catalyze a career in social impact.

• Were the fourth most quoted professors in top media outlets globally

Thanks to numerous individual donations and corporate partners who believe in the organization’s mission, Business+Impact continues to offer major initiatives such as its Board Fellowship, Impact Scholarships, Impact Corps, Social Impact Challenge, and Social Innovation Summit. Generous gifts to this program have touched communities and transformed the lives of students.

• Published 19 books

• Produced 232 peer-reviewed articles for top academic journals

CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS: THE POWER OF PLACE

D

uring the Victors for Michigan Campaign, Michigan Ross donors contributed $135 million to create award-winning, collaborative spaces at the school, as well as to make significant improvements in the campus. Here are some of the facilities updates that are helping to foster collaborative learning and community at Ross: Blau & Kresge Halls Two of the most significant campus improvements made over the past five years have been the construction of Blau Hall and the renovation of Kresge Hall. Through these architecturally sound, integrated spaces, Michigan Ross has realized a unified business school complex that is empowering its community to learn, collaborate, and innovate in unprecedented ways. Historic gifts from Stephen M. Ross, BBA ’62, and Kara Ross; Jeff Blau, BBA ’90, and Lisa Blau; as well as Sanford Robertson, BBA ‘53/MBA ‘54, made this impactful transformation possible. The 179,000 square feet of combined space contains nine new classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, a library reimagined for the digital age, and a “center for centers,” which brings together most of the school’s world-class centers and institutes.

LEED Certified Building Following suit with the incredible Ross Building, which was constructed in 2009, new space was built with respect for the environment and sustainability. The new complex, which is designed to be 30 percent more energy efficient than required by code, recently received LEED Gold certification. It was also built using an estimated 75 percent of the waste from the demolished building previously in its place. Award-Winning Architecture The expanded and unified business school complex recently won a 2018 American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, which recognizes the best new buildings designed and constructed by American architects.

Several Donors Made It All Possible Additional contributors to the business school complex include: Elizabeth D. Black, MBA ’87; Michael, MBA ’68, and Sophia Brenner; Michael R., BBA ’66/MBA ’67, and Mary Kay Hallman; J. Ira, BBA ’59, and Nicki Harris; Robert Hutchens, BBA ’84, and Randi Brosterman Hutchens; Mike, BBA ’72, and Sue Jandernoa; Stephen Malkin, BBA ’83; William C., MBA ’65, and Sally A., AM ’67, Martin; Tim, MBA ’80, and Beth O’Day; Jane, BBA ’86/MAcc ’86, and Daniel Och; Keshava C. and Bharathi C. Reddy; Timothy J., AB ’82/MBA ’84, and Elise M., BFA ’82, Sloan; Harvey J.
