The heart and soul of Pittsburgh’s Black community was on display for all to see during the fourday Juneteenth celebration in Downtown Pittsburgh.
Seriously...where else can one find the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra playing live, as HipHop artist Frzy raps to their beat?
Where else can one find the epic performance of one Erica Campbell, the gospel superstar of “Mary Mary” fame, which had
the crowd at Point State Park dancing in praise all Sunday evening?
What about the honoring of a Hip-Hop legend in Paradise Gray, or the honoring of decorated Tuskegee Airman James Harvey, as he was the grand marshal in the Western Pa. Grand Jubilee Parade?
Let’s not forget about the formidable performances on stage from Hip-Hop icon KRS-One, R&B stars Soul For Real and Sammie, and the legendary Ohio Players. And the endless Black business vendors on-site, selling everything from fish,

chicken, custom-made bakeries, Caribbean food, African clothing, jewelry, books, and artistry. And the special salute to the end of violence, featuring members of the Coalition of Violence and the Bish-
op of the AME Church’s Third Episcopal District.
And...the grand finale, a 25-minute fireworks display that brought out the largest outdoor majority-African American congregation the Pittsburgh
region has seen in recent memory.
Taylor Swift, arguably the most popular vocalist on the planet right now, might have set the all-time record for most people ever at Acrisure Stadium, with 73,117 people during her second performance this past weekend, June 17. But the “Swifties” still couldn’t overshadow the multi-layered, multi-faceted, unprecedented number of events that comprised Pittsburgh’s 2023 Juneteenth celebration. Bands were enjoyed from June 16-19 at Market Square,
Downtown, which had its own set of Black business vendors. Point State Park and the area surrounding it saw its two largest crowds for Juneteenth on Saturday, June 17, and Monday, June 19. While official estimates have not been released, there’s a good possibility that the overall attendance for Juneteenth 2023 eclipsed the estimated 44,000 people from the 2022 celebration.

The New Pittsburgh Courier has learned that LIFE Male STEAM Academy, a public charter school located at 777 Penn Center Blvd. in Wilkins Township, has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Pennsylvania Charter Schools Program.
Reverend Dr. Darryl Canady, senior pastor of Rodman Street Baptist Church and co-founder of LIFE Male STEAM Academy along with his wife, Taleeta Canady, told the Courier that he had ap-
plied for the grant in two previous years, but the school wasn't chosen.
This year, though, they got the call that they were one of just three schools to get the grant.
"What this allows us to do are some of the things that need to be done (at the school), from infrastructure, to staffing, all to help get these boys to the level that we really need them to be at," Rev. Canady said. LIFE Male STEAM Academy just completed its second year in operation, after being granted

He served five terms in Congress and died in 1887. In 2005, a portrait of Rainey was finally hung in the U.S. Capitol Building.
1859—Henry O. Tanner , the first African American painter to achieve international acclaim, is born in Pittsburgh, Pa, to a middle class Black family. His most notable work was “The Banjo Lesson,” which he painted in 1893. Tanner would later teach at Clark University in Atlanta, Ga. Thousands lined the streets as Burns was marched to a ship on June 3 for a trip back South. However, a Black Boston church raised the money to purchase Burns and within a year of his capture, he was back in Boston a free man.
1856— The so-called Pottawatomie Massacre takes place. A force of men led by famed abolitionist John Brown attacks a pro-slavery settlement in Franklin County, Kan., leaving at least five men dead. The attack was part of a period known as “Bleeding Kansas” when pro and anti-slavery forces battled one another in a bid to determine whether Kansas would be a slave or free territory. The “Pottawatomie Massacre” was also one of the events which made the Civil War unavoidable.

Leaders from the Congressional Black Caucus, alongside the family of medical pioneer Henrietta Lacks, gathered in the nation’s capital to announce their unanimous support for the pioneer to receive the esteemed Congressional Gold Medal posthumously.
Lacks, a Black woman from Baltimore, unknowingly propelled medical science forward when her cancer cells were used to advance breakthroughs in the polio vaccine and treatments for cancer, HIV, and Parkinson’s disease.
Lacks died of cervical cancer in 1951, unaware of the profound impact her cells would have on future medical advancements.
They allege Thermo Fisher Scientific collected the samples without permission and that the company continues to unjustly profit from Lacks without compensating her estate.
Christopher Seeger, one of the Lack family attorneys, vowed his team wouldn’t rest until the family has been properly compensated.
He also said Lacks’ family wants to safeguard the rights of all patients.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (DMd.) acknowledged Lacks for her invaluable contributions to medical research, which he said have benefited millions of people worldwide.
“The debt of gratitude we owe Henrietta Lacks can never be fully repaid for her invaluable contributions to medical research that have benefited millions of people across the world,” Van Hollen stated in a news release.
1915— The United States Supreme Court declares in the Guinn v. United States case that “grandfather clauses” in many Southern state constitutions and laws were illegal. The case grew out of the practice, common in the South, of setting up stringent requirements in order to prevent Blacks (former slaves) from voting. But in order to ensure that Whites could vote, the laws exempted them from the difficult requirements by asserting that anyone (or his grandfather) who could vote prior to 1867 did not have to meet the tough standards. Since virtually no Blacks could vote prior to 1867, “grandfather clauses” had the effect of denying Blacks the right to vote.

1773— Massachusetts slaves petition for their freedom. As a result of the petition, a bill ending slavery in the state was actually drawn up and passed by the legislature. But the governor refused to sign it and there were not enough votes to override his veto.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, a prominent advocate for social justice, expressed his endorsement of this significant recognition.
“Today, I joined leaders from the Congressional Black Caucus and the family of medical pioneer Henrietta Lacks to announce our unanimous support for her to receive the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously,” Crump stated.
“She is beyond worthy of this distinguished honor.”
Congressman Kweisi Mfume (D-Md.) pledged to reintroduce legislation to honor Lacks with the nation’s highest civilian award in acknowledgment of what he called her indelible contributions to modern
During her treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital, the medical staff utilized Lacks’ cancer cells without her knowledge or consent, to advance medical therapies.
The groundbreaking HeLa cell line was created from those cells, marking the birth of the first immortal line of human cells.
The push to honor Lacks comes as her family wages a legal battle against a biotech company that they accuse of selling her tissue without their consent.
In a lawsuit against Thermo Fisher Scientific, the family alleges that the company used Lacks’ living cell samples that were collected in 1951 during a

The Congressional Gold Medal is a prestigious honor bestowed upon individuals whose achievements have profoundly influenced the nation.
By unanimously supporting Lacks’ nomination, the Congressional Black Caucus, and its allies said they aim to celebrate her groundbreaking contributions to medical science and ensure that her legacy endures.
1964— Three civil rights workers (Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner) disappear near Philadelphia, Miss., and are later found murdered. Seven Ku Klux Klan members, opposed to a Black voting rights campaign, were indicted for the killings, but none served more than six years in prison. The incident became one of the major sparks to the then young Civil Rights Movement. Justice for the three was finally completed in June 2005 when the leader of the group of Klansmen—Edgar Ray “The Preacher” Killen—was convicted of their murders. Ironically, Killen was convicted on June 21, 2005—41 years to the day that Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner were killed.

1872—Paul Lawrence Dunbar one of the most popular poets in Black American history, is born in Dayton, Ohio. Dunbar first gained national recognition with a collection of works published in 1896 entitled “Lyrics of a Lowly Life,” which included “Ode to Ethiopia.” Despite the power of his poetry, Dunbar angered some Blacks who were concerned about “what will White people think” because he generally used Black dialect and not Standard English in much of his poetry. Dunbar’s first poem was published in a newspaper owned by high school friends and American airplane pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright. The Wright brothers would also provide Dunbar with funds to open the Dayton Tattler—a newspaper geared toward the city’s Black community. Unfortunately, Dunbar died at the age of 34 in 1906 of Tuberculosis.

Marshall said as he watched the fireworks display, it was unbelievable to realize that he was watching the first time in Pittsburgh history that Juneteenth fireworks occurred. He also thanked the many sponsors that helped make Juneteenth possible—and free—for all patrons.
Tim Stevens, Chairman and CEO of the Black Political Empowerment Project, found himself jamming to the sounds of the Ohio Players and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on Monday, June 19, the actual day of Juneteenth. He stayed around for the fireworks.
“B. Marshall had the nerve to say, ‘we’re gonna have fireworks at Juneteenth,’ and I just love that,” Stevens told the New Pittsburgh Courier.
“He’s had an amazing vision for what to do with Juneteenth and how to do it, and make it something that Black people, along with other people, look forward to every year.”
Stevens said it was “good to see” the mayor, Ed Gainey, and B. Marshall together during the festivities on Monday, June 19 and earlier in the weekend.
Stevens said that Juneteenth in Pittsburgh “has become a family-friendly event where you can literally see multi-generations of family and friends coming together at the same location, at the same time.”
Stevens added that B. Marshall and his wife, Margo Doss, have a laser focus “that is required to pull something like this off. It’s not something everyone can do.”

The Woodland Hills School District Board of Directors approved the charter in 2019.

Reverend Canady told the Courier that 13 years ago, he began a program at Rodman Street Baptist Church called the "March Madness Men's Revival," where he would meet with Black men at the church each Monday.
"But unfortunately, several of them were murdered," Rev. Canady revealed.
"We gotta get to them when they're young," Rev. Canady said to himself at the time.
On a subsequent September 11th, "God spoke to me, a 9-1-1 call, God told me you gotta save the boys," Rev. Canady said. "That night, he told me to start a school. I didn't go to sleep the entire night."

For New Pittsburgh Courier (NNPA Newswire)—In an age of advanced technology and widespread connectivity, text message scams, including in big cities, have become a big problem for people nationwide.
As these deceptive practices continue to grow, authorities have cautioned that it is vital for people to be aware, watchful, and cautious to protect their personal information.
From 2015 to 2022, the number of reports about possible text scams rose by 500 percent, according to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Also, officials said that more than 475 million robo-texts are sent every day, and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said that Americans had lost more than $231 million to text message scams in the first three quarters of 2022. Experts say that scams that use text messages continue to grow and target people in cities with numerous potential victims. Scammers are also increasingly targeting busy cities with high populations, such as Washington, New York, and Chicago.
Officials say that there are several reasons why text message scams are so common. One of them is that scammers can work on digital platforms without being caught, which makes it easier for them to start large-scale fraud campaigns.
Also, the fast-paced nature of city life can make people more likely to make quick decisions, which makes them more likely to fall for these scams.
Authorities warned that people should take specific steps to avoid falling for text message scams.
The FTC said that scams often promise to get you to click on links. This could include offering gift cards, coupons, or a non-interest credit card.
A scammer may also say they have information about you or may trick you by claiming suspicious activity on your account, sending a false bill, or falsely informing you that your package has arrived.

by Andrea Plaid Michigan ChronicleIn the fight for equal rights and opportunities, the LGBTQIA+ community has made significant strides over the years. However, despite progress in various areas, wage disparities continue to persist as a daunting challenge for many LGBTQIA+ individuals. According to the Human Rights Campaign, the national LGBTQIA+ advocacy organization, Black queer and trans workers make about 80 cents for every dollar a White straight worker makes. Broken down even further, Black queer women earn 85 cents.
Jerron Totten, LGBT Detroit’s social outreach coordinator & legislative advocacy specialist, and field director for Pride Decides 2020, told the Michigan Chronicle, “Black LGBT wage gaps in Michigan reveal the harsh reality of intersecting discrimination. As we fight for equality, let this statistic resonate: Black LGBT individuals in Michigan earn, on average, 20 percent less than their nonLGBT and/or White counterparts.
Wage disparities are not solely based on sexual orientation or gender identity, but they intersect with other factors such as race, gender, and disability. Re-
search consistently highlights the existence of significant pay gaps between LGBTQIA+ individuals and their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts. These disparities hinder financial security and economic mobility and perpetuate cycles of inequality.
Employment discrimination is one of the primary reasons for wage disparities within the LGBTQIA+ community. Despite progress in legal protections, many queer and trans individuals still face discrimination in the workplace. They may encounter barriers when seeking employment, experience harassment or hostile work environments and even face unjust termination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Such discrimination often limits access to higher-paying job opportunities and prevents LGBTQ individuals from reaching their full earning potential.
As far as the Great Lakes State and how employment discrimination is handled, Totten stated, “Now that we in Michigan have updated the Elliot-Larsen Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes, it’s time to dismantle barriers further and ensure fair wages for all, regardless of race, sex-
ual orientation or gender identity.” Another factor contributing to wage disparities is occupational segregation. LGBTQIA+ individuals are often channeled into lower-paying jobs due to prejudice and biases within certain industries. This occupational segregation not only limits their earning potential but also restricts their career advancement and professional growth opportunities. Stereotypes and societal expectations influence employer decisions, unevenly distributing LGBTQIA+ individuals across industries and occupations.
The absence of comprehensive workplace policies and benefits catering specifically to queer employees exacerbates wage disparities. LGBTQIA+ individuals often face limited access to family leave, health insurance, retirement plans and other essential benefits. This lack of support disproportionately impacts queer and trans workers, especially those who face additional challenges, such as raising children or navigating healthcare needs related to their gender identity or sexual orientation.
It is crucial to recognize the intersectionality of identities within the LGBTQIA+ community. LGBTQIA+ individuals
Some years ago I wrote an article titled, “How to invest with confidence.” In this article I delved into key investment fundamentals to consider when investing in the stock market. Below is a short summary of those investment fundamentals:
Objective—Every dollar saved and every dollar invested should have a clear definitive purpose or goal.
Time Horizon—Now that you have a goal and you’re accumulating money to reach your goal, when will you need to access the money to fulfill your goal?
Risk Tolerance—It’s important that you’re able to sleep at night and not be overwhelmed with the up and down swings of the market. Would you consider yourself a conservative, moderate, or aggressive investor?
Diversification—A sure-fire way to minimize risk in your investment portfolio is to have your money spread around in various places. It is safer from an investment perspective to have your investments spread across 200 different companies than to invest in a single company or 10 different companies. You should never put all your eggs in one basket.
Asset Allocation—The biggest decision you’ll make that impacts your return on investment is how your investment is allocated between stock, bonds, and cash equivalents. Stocks are riskier than bonds. Stocks have also been more rewarding than bonds over an extended period of time. According to
Ibbotson, an independent research firm, stocks have an average rate of return of 12 percent over the past 100 years, whereas bonds have an average rate of return of 6 percent over the same time span. Cash equivalents averaged right around 3 percent.
Track Record—Before selecting any investment product, you want to look at its track record. The longer the investment product has been in existence, the longer the track record you can obtain. The track record will give you a history of how well the investment has performed over the years.
Dollar Cost Aver-
aging—As opposed to trying to time the market or investing a large lump sum, it’s better to systematically invest money at regular time intervals over an extended period of time regardless of the fluctuation of the market.
Expense Ratio—The expense ratio details the cost that you’re paying for the underlying investment. The lower the expense ratio, the more money you have working for you.
What if I told you there’s a simple way to invest where the underlying investment: Has a 100-year track record. Ensures your investments are diversified or spread among hundreds of compa-
nies. Has the lowest expense ratio. A long track record will give you comfort in the investment. A diversified investment portfolio provides safety with your investments. A low expense ratio means higher returns for you with your investment. There is in fact a simple way to invest with the benefits and security I just mentioned. That underlying investment is the S&P 500 Index.
The Standard & Poor’s 500, commonly known as the S&P 500, is a renowned stock market index that serves as a barometer for the performance of the U.S. stock market. The S&P 500 is a collection of 500 of America’s biggest and brightest companies. These companies are household names. These companies provide products and services that we purchase and consume on a daily basis. One common investment advice you’d hear is invest in companies that you know. Here’s a list of a few of the 500 companies currently included in the S&P 500 Index: Apple, Amazon, Google. Facebook, Tesla, Home Depot, Disney, Starbucks, CVS, Target, PNC Financial Services, and Johnson and Johnson. I’m sure you recognize all of these companies. I’m sure you spent money with most of these companies.
who also belong to marginalized racial or ethnic groups, have disabilities or face economic hardships experience compounded disadvantages. These intersecting identities magnify the wage disparities they encounter, making it even more challenging to break free from cycles of poverty and inequality. Addressing wage disparities for LGBTQIA+ individuals requires concerted efforts from various stakeholders. Activist organizations, policymakers and employers must work together to implement inclusive policies protecting LGBTQIA+ employees from discrimination and promoting fair wages. Legislation must be enacted or strengthened to ensure comprehensive workplace protections and benefits for queer and trans individuals, including equal pay for equal work. Promoting workplace inclusion is essential to combat wage disparities. Employers should foster a culture that values diversity, inclusivity, and equal opportunity. This can be achieved through diversity training, LGBTQIA+ employee resource groups, and the establishment of non-discriminatory policies. Creating safe and welcoming environments
I’m certain that if I had the space to list the other 488 companies included in the S&P 500 Index, you’d be familiar with them as well. By using the S&P 500 Index as your core underlying investment, you invest in all of these companies.
The S&P 500 was introduced in 1957 and is maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices. The index is weighted by market capitalization, meaning that larger companies have a greater influence on its performance. However, the S&P 500 is also subject to certain rules and criteria to ensure diversity and representativeness. It includes companies from various sectors such as technology, healthcare, finance, consumer goods, and more, which provides a comprehensive snapshot of the U.S. stock market.
To be included in the S&P 500, a company must meet specific eligibility criteria. These criteria consider factors like market capitalization, liquidity, financial viability, and sector representation. The index is periodically rebalanced to maintain its accuracy and to reflect changes in the market landscape.
The S&P 500 holds great importance for investors, financial professionals, and the economy as a whole. It serves as a benchmark for measuring the performance of investment portfolios, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). By serving as a benchmark, many investment professionals who manage investment portfolios for their

WIB: Can you describe your role at Wells Fargo?
Rolley: I oversee the Wells Fargo Foundation, one of the largest corporate foundations in the country, and lead the bank’s strategic philanthropic vision on advancing community impact around housing access and affordability, financial health, small business growth, and community climate resilience. I also oversee our employee volunteerism and giving for 250,000 employees, which is a huge part of how we show up in our communities. Last year, Wells Fargo employees volunteered over 700,000 hours and the bank donated roughly $300 million to strengthen local communities so ensuring our philanthropy has meaningful impact is a major priority for me. I am the first African American to hold this vital role.
WIB: What would you say is the best part of the work you get to do?
Rolley: Coming from a long career in urban planning, public service and economic development, I’m really excited
about the opportunity to impact systemic change from within the financial services sector. It’s an economic imperative for us to help address some of the policies and practices that have prevented historically marginalized people and communities from growing wealth through starting businesses or purchasing homes. At the Wells Fargo Foundation, we’re not interested in just making grants. Within philanthropy, we’re often able to take bigger risks than the company can take on the business side. So we really want to work with community partners that are already in the trenches and doing innovative and transformational work. Then we can come in and provide catalytic philanthropic capital to help those solutions take off, impacting more communities and lives.
WIB: What does diversity and Inclusion mean for you?
Rolley: I was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, one of the most diverse places in the U.S. where I had the privilege of learning about different cultures and the cornucopia that is our collective humanity.
For me, inclusion does not mean that we should be neutral or blind when it comes to race, gender, sexuality, and other dif-
ferences. People should be able to show up as they are. And inclusion means accepting and recognizing the uniqueness and different life experiences that every person brings. Equity and inclusion is not a lens through which I see our work. I wear glasses and know that you can take lenses off. Real diversity and inclusion has to be centered in the work we do. Also, I’m the head of a corporate foundation. I recognize that our ability to give is dependent on my corporation’s ability to make a profit. I firmly believe that we can do good and do well, and there is clearly an economic imperative to investing in and building up diverse market segments that have been historically ignored or underinvested in.
WIB: What is one piece of career advice you can give to our readers?
Rolley: Fail fast, learn fast, fix fast. Mistakes are going to happen. And you won’t have to seek them out—they’ll find you. When you fail, find the lesson in your failure— quickly—and make sure you don’t repeat it the next time. Then make a decision and follow through without dwelling on the past.
WIB: Having a role in banking can seem daunting at times, what do you enjoy most outside of work?
Rolley: I’m an audiophile. Music of all types —gospel, jazz, classical, rock, pop, hip hop, tribal, house, neo soul, etc.—they all are therapeutic. I also love hiking and traveling. Experiencing the outdoors and various places, cultures and people. Finally, I’m all about the four F’s— Faith, Family, friends and food. These things ground me and keep me sane and healthy. They allow me to charge the battery and live with purpose.
WIB: Describe your proudest moment to date.
Rolley: I have had many moments for which I have been really proud in my professional career, but my proudest moment at Wells Fargo thus far has been contributing $3 million to fill a capital gap for supportive housing in Brooklyn so that people experiencing homelessness can have a stable home.
WIB: What would you say is the most important lesson about finances?
Rolley: Being part of the mainstream banking system is absolutely key to advancing historically marginalized communities. My biggest piece of advice would be to start saving early. It can be minimal at first—even a few dollars—but it will build a discipline and mindset over time. Placing a value on savings can set you up for bigger opportunities like college or owning a
OTIS ROLLEYhome, which then put you on a path to generational wealth. It’s also never too late to start – but I’d definitely tell my younger self to put money aside for my goals.
WIB: Can you describe a pivotal moment in your career?
Rolley: A pivotal moment in my career was when I was working on a project early in my career and I failed. I failed big time. I was supposed to do a business process analysis and I used the wrong baseline data. My boss had very high standards and I was so embarrassed and frustrated. My boss took me to the side and told me that failure was part of what is necessary to go from good to great. He said failing is okay, but staying down when you fall is not! He taught me the tenet that I live by now, “Fail fast. Learn fast. Fix

Rolley: Fully being who you are, all of the time, at work and at home. I am a Christian. I am a father. I am Black. I am gay. All of these things contribute to who I am, and an “authentic voice” is one that allows all of these things, and all of my other traits, experiences, education and training to unapologetically be heard in my work.

clients seek to beat the market (S&P 500) or get better overall investment returns than what the market (S&P 500) did. Important to note 80 percent of investment professionals don’t beat the market. Their returns are lower than the S&P 500 Index.
Did you notice that when I use the market, I put in parentheses S&P 500. That’s because when the financial pundits on TV and radio are referencing the stock market, they’re referring to the S&P 500 Index.. The S&P 500 Index represents 80 percent
of the entire stock market. The movements of the S&P 500 are closely monitored by economists, policymakers and analysts. Its performance is often seen as an indicator of the overall health and direction of the U.S. economy. Changes in the S&P 500 can influence market sentiment, consumer confidence, and investment strategies, making it a crucial reference point for decision-making.
For nearly the last century, the average annual total return of the S&P 500 has been about 10 percent. I have a simple investment philosophy.
Why try to beat the market (S&P 500) when you can own the market by investing in the S&P 500 Index.
Investing in the S&P 500 can be done through various means. Individual investors can purchase shares of ETFs or mutual funds that track the index. These investment vehicles offer the benefit of diversification across a broad range of companies, reducing the risk associated with investing in individual stocks. BLACK LGBTQIA+ FROM B1
for LGBTQIA+ individuals helps close the wage gap and benefits businesses by tapping into a broader pool of talent and perspectives.
Increasing public awareness about wage disparities faced by queer and trans individuals is
crucial. Educating employers, employees, and society about the challenges and discrimination LGBTQIA+ individuals encounter can help combat stereotypes and biases. By fostering understanding and empathy, we can work towards dismantling the systemic barri-
ers contributing to wage disparities.
Wage disparities continue to be a significant concern for LGBTQIA+ individuals, hindering their economic progress and perpetuating inequality.
Addressing these disparities requires a multifaceted approach that includes
comprehensive workplace policies, legal protections, advocacy, and cultural change. By working together, we can create a society where LGBTQ individuals are accepted and empowered to thrive economically, thus fostering a more equitable and inclusive future for all.

Moss, who had dedicated over a decade to building her business, says she had finally accumulated enough savings to pursue a peaceful life in rural Guerneville, California.
Soon after answering the message, Moss got a phone call from a person who identified themselves as a Chase Bank representative, and the bank’s name appeared on the caller ID.
Initially dismissing it as a minor inconvenience, Moss promptly replied.
At the other end of the line was an individual identifying as “Miss Barbara” from “Chase ATM.” She requested permission from Moss to issue a new debit card to resolve the alleged fraudulent charge. Barbara asked Moss to confirm her identity by reading the numbers from a text message to her over
the phone.
“And I would just repeat those numbers to her, and she’d say, ‘That’s great. Thank you so much, Ms. Moss,’” said Moss.
Miss Barbara called Moss multiple times over the next week about a problem with the card delivery. She asked Moss to verify her identity by reading back the numbers from subsequent text messages.
It wasn’t until Moss visited her nearest bank branch that the devastating truth emerged.
A supervisor informed her that the scam completely depleted her life savings of nearly $160,000.
“That was all my money. It took me 12 years to get that money, and that was my life savings,” Moss said.
“My world fell apart. My whole world fell apart,” Moss said.
JPMorgan Chase said that scammers deceived Ms. Moss and got her personal information, which compromised her account.
Here are some crucial things to do to reduce the risk:
Check the source out: Be careful when you get unwanted text messages, especially ones that ask for personal or financial information. Always check the sender’s name before responding or giving out any private information.
Don’t click on strange links: Don’t click on links in text messages, especially if they come from sources you don’t know or look sketchy. These links can lead to harmful websites or cause the download of dangerous software.
Educate yourself:
Keep up with the latest text message scams and hackers’ most common tricks. Get to know how they do things so you can better spot and avoid pos-
sible dangers. Beware of urgency and pressure. Scammers often make victims feel they must move quickly or use high-pressure tactics to get what they want.
Be careful about messages that tell you to do something right away or offer deals that seem too good to be true. Enable two-factor authentication: Use two-factor authentication whenever you can to give your online accounts an extra layer of security.

A redneck is defined as a working-class White person, especially a politically reactionary one from a rural area. This term is considered to be derogatory and informal and is not a term of endearment. Rednecks are considered to be bigoted, narrow-minded, and prejudiced. The term is not usually used to indicate a Black person, but the truth of the matter is that “Black Rednecks” exist. One person, in particular, would seem to warrant this description. His name is Jesse Lee Peterson, and he is the host of a popular podcast that is titled “The Fallen State.” His guests come from a broad range of backgrounds and his ideas are often considered to be outrageous. Several of his guests have walked out of his interviews in protest of his questions and attitudes.
Jesse Lee Peterson, a Black man raised in the rural South, lovingly considers Donald Trump to be the “Great White Hope.” He also insists that there is no such thing as racism! When he asks a question of a guest to clarify what is being said, he will often say, “I’m Black and slow,” please explain further. He believes that there are two types of men (males); Alpha and Beta. He thinks that Beta males are soft and compliant, and refers to them in a derogatory manner. Any man who would take advice from a female is a “Beta.”
Jesse Lee believes that men are meant to run the world, and that no man should take advice from a woman. Love does not originate with women— the natural order of intelligence, love, power and authority on Earth is the following: God—Man— Woman—Children. Basically, the only jurisdiction women have is children; women don’t have a direct pipeline to God, and they are not qualified to provide ideas to men. Any man who would listen to the advice of a woman is loudly proclaimed to be a “Beta!”
Jesse Lee believes Whites are smarter than Blacks, and that all of the problems in the Black community stem totally from the actions of Blacks and their inferior behavior. He points out that Blacks are innately criminal and have done far more violence on Earth than Whites. He insists that there is no proof that White people have held Blacks back, or even that the condition of Black people has been adversely impacted by race.
When questioned about police brutality and its disproportionate impact on Blacks, Jesse Lee insists it is because Black people don’t know how to act when stopped by the police.
He basically believes that God does not communicate directly with women; that her husband is the intermediary. He also laments the fact that most Black children are raised in female-headed households. The catch is that he considers women to be totally responsible for this state of affairs. He once had a Black male guest on his show who admitted that he had never dated a Black woman. Jesse’s response was “Good!” or something to that effect. He encourages every man to “forgive” his mother for causing harm to the family and to the broader Black community. He believes that Satan is the head of women and God is the head of men.
Basically, Jesse Lee Peterson comes across as being extremely anti-Black, anti-woman, homophobic, and a multi-bigot. He does not acknowledge that racism exists. One of his favorite questions for guests is, “Do you love White people?”
Now, a person who was not born yesterday can find some truth in certain ideas that he promotes… it IS true that about 77 percent of Black children are raised without fathers. The issue is where he places the blame. It is also true that there is a violence problem among Blacks, but it definitely does NOT outstrip the overall violence that Blacks have been subjected to in America. The great irony is that Mr. Peterson is basically an affable guy with an engaging personality. He considers himself a consummate Christian, and he apparently believes the absolutely ridiculous things that he says, Truth dictates that we all have our differences of opinion regarding important issues, but Mr. Peterson’s ideas are often so preposterous that his guests, White AND Black, look at him with disbelief. We are entitled to our beliefs, but it is unfortunate that this Black man’s ideas are capable of exacerbating racial animosities, which can be seen by the admiration that he gets from some of his White followers who express delight that they have an ally. Hopefully, his ideas will also serve as a catalyst for Black people to prove him wrong!

Sengstacke Editor(TriceEdneyWire.com)—Few knowledgeable politicians or citizens will deny the link between the threat to impeach Richard Nixon and the eventual impeachment of William Jefferson Clinton. Misusing a common, contemporary descriptor, “Payback is a Witch!!” The only “real” reason for Clinton’s impeachment at that time is because the Republican House of Representatives majority had the votes for impeachment. Before then, they had an insufficient number of votes to sustain that action. Clinton’s 1993 impeachment effort was seminal, if for no other reason than, to illuminate the corruption to which the Republican Party would stoop to win/retain power while exercising their passion for political retribution.
History informs us that Nixon was an unscrupulous, corrupt politician whose primary goal was self-interest. This fact is illuminated by his direction of the Watergate break-in and his interference in the Paris (Vietnamese) Peace Talks. His evident guilt in the Watergate incident was sufficient to inspire a delegation of members of his own party (Republican) to encourage his resignation. He was guilty as sin, and everyone knew it!
Don’t get me wrong, I deplore the moral turpitude of Clinton. His conduct besmirched the image of the presidency, but the conduct of Nixon crossed into the realm of criminality. The impeachment of Clinton became the means of retaliation for the threatened impeachment and resignation of Nixon, and the Republican Party’s declaration of exemption from

the ‘rule of law.’ Fifty years later, it is obvious that the perception of their exemption from the rule of law is the rule rather than the exception among the leadership AND ‘rank and file’ of the Republican Party. The corruption and criminality of Trump, their current standard bearer, is the only evidence needed to reach that conclusion. With few exceptions, the willingness of Republicans to justify and defend Trump’s lawlessness paints a clear picture of how far they are willing to go to impose their ideals and will upon the majority of Americans. Trump’s obvious willingness to ignore the requirements of the law by refusing to return presidential records and classified documents was bad enough, but, adding to his 20K plus volume of lies, he declared that all required documents had been returned. Admissions and facts also show that Trump attempted to involve his legal team in his web of lies. What is most egregious to me, my friends and those concerned about national security is how Trump played, and is playing, fast and loose with secrets of national defense and intelligence. Friends who have served in the military have explained to me
that had they handled classified materials in the same manner as alleged by Trump, their careers would have ended with the certainty of punishment.
Some have forgotten that Trump’s legal concerns involve more than just his misappropriated documents. The legal entanglements related to Stormy Daniels continue to be a thorn in Trump’s side. Also, let us not forget Trump’s audiotaped telephone conversation with Georgia’s Secretary of State, as I interpret it, soliciting extra-legal assistance in creating 11,000+ votes to secure a Trump election victory. He (Trump) has been arraigned for one of these charges and awaits an indictment determination for the other.
Although Trump continues to deny any wrongdoing in this affair, sufficient facts have surfaced to credibly refute his protestations. And, yet, as they seemingly ignore or are unable/ unwilling to see his criminality, his political allies continue to protest his ongoing criminal prosecution. Even worse, his standing among Republican voters has not diminished. Only a handful acknowledges his obvious criminality.
With the current malignant thinking of most Republicans, one can only wonder how they will reconcile future involvement in our established democratic processes with the conflicts of principle they have created. Or will they work to destroy their dreaded SYSTEM?

(TriceEdneyWire.com)—The federal indictment of Donald Trump—the first federal indictment of a former president in U.S. history—poses the question. Trump’s enraged reaction —calling it the “greatest witch hunt of all time” and denouncing special counsel Jack Smith, a career prosecutor, as a “deranged lunatic”—makes the question unavoidable. Obviously, Trump deserves a fair trial, his guilt or innocence determined by a jury of his peers. But every candidate for president should be asked if they would pardon Donald Trump if they were president. As Gerald Ford proved when pardoning Richard Nixon, a presidential pardon can be issued before a trial, or even before formal charges are brought, so the question needn’t wait on the trial.
Whether Donald Trump is found guilty or not (it will only take one juror in his upcoming Miami trial to produce a hung jury), the charges in the indictment are serious, and the facts alleged describe clear violations of the law. The president took classified documents that did not belong to him. These included truly consequential secrets —“information regarding defense and weapons capabilities of both the United States and foreign countries, U.S. nuclear programs … and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack.” Trump shared classified information with guests who did not have security clearances, essentially crowing about his possession of them. When the National Archives and the Department of Justice sought return of the documents, Trump hatched efforts to hide some of them, even after he was issued a federal subpoena—a legal demand—that he return them. He lied to federal officials, and even deceived his own attorney. As Bill Barr, Trump’s former attorney general, stated, “there is no excuse for what he (Trump) did here.”

by A. Peter BaileyTriceEdneyWire.com)—It’s time for serious Black folks in this country to make it clear that when we advocate for reparations, it is not requesting some kind of gift from the federal government. Reparations to us means that as descendants of enslaved Africans, we are due payment for the 250 years for which our ancestors were forced to work for absolutely no payment. The only thing provided by the enslavers was enough food and clothing that would enable our African ancestors to continue working so that the enslavers could fill their pockets with money.
That’s why reparations, which is defined as “broadly understood compensation given for an abuse or injury.”

decide whether to stand with Trump and accuse the Justice Department of being “weaponized” or stand for the principle that no man is above the law, and the law should be applied to the powerful and the powerless alike.
The leading Trump challenger in the Republican Party, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, reacted to the indictment by charging that the “weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society.” Former Vice President Mike Pence tried to have it both ways, comparing the indictment to the way a “third-world nation” would use criminal charges to attack their opponents, while saying that it is imperative that the law be enforced even-handedly and demonstrate that no man is above the law. Similarly, Sen. Tim Scott tried to straddle, saying the charges were a “serious, serious challenge” to Trump, but denouncing the DOJ as “weaponized” against Trump.
Sadly, the only Republican contenders to criticize Trump are those that run lowest in the early polls. Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson called on Trump to withdraw from the race, and urged the Republican National Committee to revise the requirement that any Republican participating in the debates pledge to support the party’s eventual nominee by excluding anyone found guilty of espionage or a felony. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie called Trump’s perils “self-inflicted,” dismissing the attack on the independent special counsel.
Trump, of course, is free to run for
Washington Post column entitled, “Fight for reparations widens understanding of history,” provided solid comments on reparations from Roslyn Mickens and Kelly Matthews, leaders of the organization DMV Freedmen.
According to Ms. Mickens, “We have reached the conclusion that the U.S. Supreme Court will never honor a reparations claim that is rooted in racial terms….Reparations is not a cure for racism. This is not about reparations for ‘Black’ people. Anybody can say that they are ‘Black’ these days. This is about reparations for the descendants of America’s emancipated people. The past is not the past….Racism endures, the legacy of slavery lives on. But a new generation of freedmen will always be there demanding that the nation makes amends.”
Ms. Matthews noted that “When America was being built, we were being excluded from economic development. What we got were massa-
president while under indictment or even from prison if he is found guilty. In 1920, Eugene Victor Debs ran for president while jailed for opposing World War I, garnering 900,000 votes as the Socialist Party candidate. Trump and his supporters now are promising violent “retribution.” Kari Lake, the failed Arizona gubernatorial candidate, addressed the Georgia Republican Party convention, warning the prosecutor, the attorney general and President Biden that “if you want to get to President Trump (sic), you are going to have to go through me and … through 75 million Americans just like me. And “…Most of us are card-carrying members of the NRA.” That’s not a threat,” she said, “That’s a public service announcement.”
That rhetoric will grow ever more heated as the prosecution proceeds —and as seems likely, if Trump is indicted in Georgia for trying to overturn an election and in Washington for his complicity in the sacking of the Capitol on January 6. So, it is incumbent on those who seek the presidency to be clear about where they stand. Do they stand with the proposition that no man is above the law, or would they give Donald Trump a pass? Will they support the criminal justice system— whatever the verdict—or will they offer Trump a pardon? Trump, of course, has made it clear he would pardon himself. Where do the other contenders for the presidency stand on that?
Many issues will be debated in the presidential race—the economy, abortion, guns, the “war on woke,” Ukraine, catastrophic climate change, the right to vote and more. One central issue is posed by Trump’s vicious attack on the Justice Department, and the independent special counsel. Americans have the right to know: Would contenders for the presidency allow the criminal justice process to proceed or would they issue Trump a get out of jail free card?
cres, were burned, lynched, bombed, drowned, water-logged. Anytime we tried to make it our Black excellence was met with White violence, Black Codes, convict leasing, school desegregation.”
The analysis put forth by Ms. Mickens and Ms. Matthews, based on how this country has treated people of African descendant, its right on target. However when it comes to reparations I have a slight difference with them.
I strongly believe that reparations should focus solely on what is owed to the descendants of our African ancestors for 250 years of free, forced labor. Payment for post slavery labor is a separate issue to be dealt with.
Reparations for the direct descendants of those Africans who were forced to work for 250 years without being paid a single penny is absolutely clear. That’s why demanding reparations to direct descendants is not requesting a gift from the federal government.
For Black folks, reparations by the federal government is not a gift
(NNPA NEWSWIRE)—America 2023: tumultuous times. Yes. Yet, amidst the greatest domestic challenges of American history, our nation has attempted to respond to the challenges through transformative public policy initiatives that have moved America toward a more perfect inclusive union.
Today there are new challenges to be sure, but also there are ongoing battles that have yet to be won. There are civil rights struggles and conditions that harken back to the 1960s that still abuse people of color every day, that still deny justice, equality and opportunity for all.
There’s an old saying: The first step to solving a problem is admitting it—and the first step can be painful.
There is still gross inequity in our education system, between rich school districts and poor districts. There is still inequality in access to healthcare, employment, to financial credit and there is a basic violation of civil and human rights in our criminal justice system.
Misguided pseudo-progressive policies such as “defund the police” and soft on crime procedures are literally contributing to the killing of hundreds of Black people and other people of color every day across America.
The truth is, crime is out of control in this country, especially in too many of our cities.
While many choose to turn a blind eye, it is people of color who are the majority of the victims: People of color account for 73 percent of rape victims; 72 percent of robbery victims; and 80 percent of felony assault victims; and 68.7 percent of the people in prison are Black
Andrew M. Cuomo and Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr.and brown and 44 percent of the people killed by police in the United States are Black and brown.
We do need police reform and reform of the entire justice system.
• One: we need to change the culture and premise of policing. Our basic police system was designed in the mid-1800s—a different time and place. Today, it’s estimated that less than 10 percent of police officers’ time is actually fighting violent crime. We need a different vision, we need to rethink how we police—911 calls signal an emergency, and we need more specialized and better trained emergency responders for different needs: domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health, homeless issues, gang problems as well as violent crime in progress.
• Second: We need dangerous guns off the streets and all guns away from dangerous and mentally ill people. By far, most gun crimes are committed in urban areas with handguns. We need to reduce not increase concealed weapons in our cities.
We need to keep guns out of the hands of anyone under 21.
We need to fill gaps in the background check system so it’s universal and nationwide.
And we need to bring back the assault weapons ban because weapons of war have no place on our streets or in our communities. Assault weapons enable the horrific mass shootings that continue to plague our country.
• Third: We need to reduce recidivism. The vast majority of violent crimes are repeated by a small number of people who keep hurting others over and over.
• Fourth: We need to have more effective alternatives to incarceration, safer jails, but dangerous and repetitive violent people must be taken off the streets to protect all Americans, and in particular for the most vulnerable who are disproportionately victimized by violence and crime in Black and brown communities.
• Fifth: We have to stop over criminalizing petty, non-violent acts. 80 percent of crimes are for misdemeanors, and many are petty non-violent acts. And some charges are deliberately vague and are subject to discretion that can be abused by police, like loitering, vagrancy, trespass, or failure to pay a fine. In fact, some of the most horrific examples of police abuse occurred when a minor crime arrest escalated: Eric Garner killed for selling loose cigarettes; Rodney King beaten within an inch of his life for speeding; George Floyd killed for a bad $20 bill; Alton Sterling killed for selling CDs; Philando Castile killed for a broken taillight; and, Michael Brown killed for jaywalking. We believe that the time to act is now. These specific categories of civil rights have been violated for too long and the time to make a difference is surely too short. As a nation we cannot afford to remain silent about extremists’ hatred, violence, crime, and the fear-filled deterioration of American cities and towns.
This is for us a sense of urgency and civic responsibility. We have decided to work and act together, and to speak out publicly with recommended commonsense solutions to crime, violence, guns, and police reform that we know the majority of the American people support.

According to reports, the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation is on the verge of bankruptcy. According to other accounts, Black Lives Matter has $30 million in assets and is not bankrupt.
BLM supporters had enough of the financial scandals. They indicated that they remained committed to the movement but not the organization. Many supporters, though, refuse to admit that the movement was intellectually bankrupt from the outset.
Since its inception in 2013, journalists have stated that BLM is the modern-day civil rights movement, yet BLM has never carried the mantle of civil rights. BLM adopted the political posture of Black Power.
In the mid-sixties, a new generation of Black activists began demanding “Black Power” at a march in Mississippi. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed two years prior, but the younger generation rejected their elders’ incremental politics in favor of empowerment by any means necessary. Black Power activists demanded an immediate end to “neocolonial” control of Black communities, the circulation of “philosophies of blackness,” and reparations for slavery from “White capitalist America.”
MLK’s advisor, Bayard Rustin, warned everyone who asked him that Black Power not only had no practical value for the Civil Rights Movement but that spreading it was harmful.
According to Rustin, the slogan “Black Power” lacked any clear definition. It only succeeded in galvanizing emotions on all sides, with Whites seeing it as an expression of a new racism and many Blacks taking it as a warning to White people that Blacks will no longer tolerate brutality and violence.
Rustin went on to say that Black Power is a psychological rejection of White supremacy, part of the rebellion
J. Pharoah Doss Check It Outagainst the stereotypes that have been ascribed to Blacks for three hundred years. Nevertheless, pride, confidence, and a new identity cannot be won by glorifying “blackness” or attacking Whites.
Finally, Rustin stated that, while Black power is understandable as a reaction to the apparent irrelevance of so many hard-won victories in the dayto-day lives of most Blacks, the fact remains that the slogan Black Power does no service to Black people, and Black Power threatens to recreate the very conditions its adherents claimed to rebel against.
Obviously, Rustin’s critique of Black Power can be adapted and applied to BLM, but doing so will not demonstrate BLM’s intellectual bankruptcy. That is evident in BLM’s vast misunderstanding of 21st century America.
Consider how the right-wing classified BLM as a Marxist organization in order to discredit it. This failed because most people are unaware of Marxism’s intellectual history. As a result, most people are unaware that BLM made the same mistake about 21st century America that Marx did about working conditions during the industrial age.
Marx predicted that working conditions would deteriorate progressively, leading workers to revolt and demolish the capitalist system. Marx was incorrect. The inverse occurred: labor conditions improved, earnings rose, and society as a whole flourished.
America’s silent majority found it
peculiar that a movement demanding that Black lives matter began during the second term of the country’s first Black president, where the descendants of African slaves are collectively the most prosperous Black people on the planet. They thought it was even odder that the movement sought to eradicate White supremacy. For decades, the phrase “White supremacy” was confined to describing Neo-Nazi ideology or serving as a historical reference.
All of this would have been an oxymoron if it weren’t for the fact that BLM believed America was just as racist today as it was during segregation and that Black Americans are worse off in the 21st century than they were in the past.
None of this matched the reality of contemporary America. BLM’s mistake was far worse than Marx’s.
BLM convinced themselves that Whites were at the top of a social hierarchy while Blacks were at the bottom, and the movement’s goal was to reverse the social hierarchy one “peaceful protest” at a time. In 2018, an ACLU article said, “Black Lives Matter has always been more of a human rights movement than a civil rights movement. BLM’s focus has been less about changing specific laws and more about fighting for a fundamental reordering of society.”
When Rustin was asked about the Black Power advocates insistence that they wanted to reconstruct society in the interest of greater social justice, Rustin replied that they have no such idea in mind; what they are in fact arguing for is the creation of a new Black establishment.
The only thing more damaging than an idea in the wrong hands is a social movement that is intellectually bankrupt.
(TriceEdneyWire.com)—Just two years ago, in 2021, The Senate unanimously passed legislation to make Juneteenth (June 19) a federal holiday.
The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed the legislation with just fourteen holdouts, mostly among Southern Republicans. It is unlikely that this legislation would get such overwhelming support today, as so many oppose teaching truth, opposing “critical race theory”, and even simple teaching about race and enslavement. Indeed, many might oppose teaching about Juneteenth, which commemorates the day that enslaved Black Texans learned that they were free. President Biden described signing the Juneteenth holiday legislation as “one of the greatest honors” of his presidency. He said, “Great nations don’t ignore their most painful moments, they embrace them.” In embracing our painful moments, however, the celebration of Juneteenth is hollow unless it is accompanied by some action. President has had the opportunity to embrace HR 40, legislation that would have authorized a Commission to Study and Develop Reparations Proposals for African Americans. First introduced by Congressman John Conyers (DMI) in 1989, and introduced in every congressional session thereafter, the legislation was later championed by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) and supported by more than 210 members of Congress. With a Republican-dominated Congress, HR 40 is unlikely to pass during this legislative session, but the President can still sign
Julianne Malveauxan executive order establishing a Commission on Reparations. Granted, this might be divisive as we move toward election 2024 with a nation acutely divided on matters of race. Still, Biden must practice what he preaches. In embracing the history of enslavement, and commemorating Juneteenth, our President must ask how we get past the history to compensate the descendants of enslaved people who still experience generational trauma from enslavement.
California’s governor Gavin Newsome established a reparations commission that has now released its report, with recommendation. San Francisco has also issued a report, suggesting both monetary and non-monetary benefits for San Franciscans. Critics have focused on the monetary awards these commissions have suggested, and they would be better advised to focus on the concepts, not the details. No monetary benefit can compensate the descendants of enslaved people for the wealth gap, not to mention the psychological effects, that slave descendants have experienced. Suggestions that individual reparations run into the mil-
lions of dollars alarm some, but others understand that reports concluding that large amounts are due represent a starting point in negotiations, not an end point. The most important thing is to reparations are due and then to determine how they should be paid.
“This day doesn’t just celebrate the past,” President Biden said, “It calls for action today.” But what action?
The Supreme Court is likely to overturn affirmative action. Even as they offered small hope in the Alabama gerrymandering case, they are likely to rule differently in other voting rights to discuss how they might be paid.
The reparations movement is growing, especially the local reparations movement, and people across racial lines are concerned about the wealth gap and its long-term implications. At the same time, resistance to Black progress is growing and so-called law enforcement has gone wild in attacking Black drivers, joggers, walkers, and breathers. President Biden deserves credit for signing Juneteenth legislation. What will he do, in these politically divided times, to do more in the spirit of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth is a first step toward recognizing our nation’s sordid history. Even as we embrace our nation’s flaws, we must repair the harm that this history has done. Reparations are the next step toward making Black Americans whole. (Dr. Julianne Malveaux is an economist, author, and Dean of the College of Ethnic Studies at Cal State LA.)
In the midst of the discussion of the second indictment of former President Donald Trump, there is an issue greater than, if not equal to, the former President’s alleged crimes.
That issue is the embarrassing spectacle of those elected members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate who have taken an oath to “uphold and defend” the Constitution of the United States, which includes its laws, institutions and process of governance. That oath respects the separation of powers as established in Articles I, II and III of the Constitution. It requires that the business of the nation be done in the prescribed manner of its laws, which gives legislative powers to the Congress, Judicial powers to the Courts and Executive powers to the President as prescribed under Article II.
This means that when Republican members of Congress take aim and condemn the Department of Justice, the same DOJ operating under its delegated authority within the prescribed conduct of the Judicial system, their conduct denies the validity of the very Constitution such members swore to “protect and defend”. It is one thing for die hard Trump supporters to speak as if they are operating in support of the Constitution, and another to, at the same time, say they will not read the indictment and refuse to acknowledge the same legal
John E. Warrenprocess that states “No one is above the law” (including Presidents).
These same Trump supporters are joined by elected Republican members of the U.S. House and Senate who join the Trump supporters as deniers of the validity of the current Presidency and our electoral process—except when it works in their favor. Democracy has been crippled with the failure of our two Party system collapsing under such refusals by Republican members of Congress to support the very political and judicial process upon which they were elected.
It is an embarrassment to have the Speaker of the House of Representatives and members of the U.S. Senate openly attack the process and indictments brought against Donald Trump. They refuse to even read the document in which Trump indicted himself through his words, and actions while he simultaneously refuses to acknowledge the threats to national security detailed in his illegal holding and refusal to release Secret and
Classified documents.
If Donald Trump were to be treated like anyone else in a similar situation, the Court would probably order a psychiatric evaluation to consider his fitness to stand trial. His actions and statements are against his personal interest. What does that say for the elected officials and the candidates for the Office of the Presidency on the extreme right who seek to use the Republican Party to support Trump, in spite of the laws he has violated and for which he will be tried, and should be jailed?
The solution to this crisis is for the rest of us to not lose faith in our system of government. To use our votes and even the Recall Process to remove from Office those extremists who would violate and throw out our laws and system of democratic governance to support what they want: the replacement of democracy with an authoritarian form of government under Donald Trump. Their end goal is a physical war of violence against our democratic governmental institutions and those of us who support those institutions.
We must not join the embarrassment of those elected officials who are drinking the Trump Kool-Aid. Thomas Jefferson once said, “Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Freedom”. Let’s watch and Vote!

sition, then generally brings the room to a calm. The proud grandson of a former Homestead Gray, published author, and sports official, “Wayne’s World’ takes sports to another level.
:02-Add to all that the very important and timely presence of former CCAC basketball player Larry DiCicco speaking on plans for the college to honor legendary coach Bill Shay. The unbelievable brilliance and longevity of Charles “Buddy” Allie, the fastest 75-year-old man in the world in the 100 and 200 meters, who was recently honored in Barcelona as Masters Division Athlete of the Year. And the continued caring and sharing of the Elite Corvette Club of Pittsburgh and their nonstop efforts to aid our community in multiple ways. Represented by V.P. Tia Harris and Milt Oliver, one of the original Black Corvette Club Members.
Lest you be reminded, Terry Knight, younger brother of the legendary Billy Knight and brother to the Knight Basketball Family Dynasty, was a member of the Pitt team from ‘74-’79
the Connie Hawkins Pro/ Am Summer Basketball League where he and the great Hosea Champine joined forces with Eric Jefferson, Petey Harris, Jeff Baldwin, Kevin Price, Sr.,
der the masterful direction of Coach Eddie Jefferies.
:09-While we’re talking “Gangsters,” allow me to clear up some confusion still held by LeVon Johnson, the coach of the Cosmic Echoes
C.H.L. champions and the only back-to-back winners, thus making the order of the league’s greatest teams being the Rankin Gangsters, Cosmic Echoes, Clairton’s Finest and Bump Yes. And I will shout it out to the world with my last breath that “The Dons” coached by yours truly comes in fifth on the list with four final four appearances and two championship games without bringing home the gold due to some various, and I dare say highly questionable, circumstances to this very day???
:08-Sorry I got sidetracked. Back to the show. Also on the mic a few Wednesdays ago at Vicky’s Soul Grill and Q&M’s Restaurant in Penn Hills was Eric Jefferson. AKA “Crusher” because of his dominant rebounding career while at Northeastern University under the coaching of the legendary Jim Calhoun, when he led the nation in rebounding. But don’t get it twisted, Jefferson could score the ball from quality spots on the court and when it was time to “D-up” he was your man.
:07-Here’s another side bar for ya. Imagine this if you can. Close your eyes for a moment...drive down Braddock Ave. about six blocks and hang a left... and then a quick right and you’re in “The Alley,” yep, “The Alley!” “The Alley” with the old-old school rim on the telephone pole where Jefferson, Knight and his four brothers, Champine, and Harris learned and played the schoolyard game that landed all of them in Division I Basketball programs! Simply unbelievable!
:06-The third member of that historic night was Corey Gadson, AKA “Coach
A member of Clairton’s Finest along with the late great Darrell Gissendanner, “Big John” Marshall, Curtis Aiken, George Allen, “Dr. Hook,” and other Clairton greats. After his run at St. Francis College of PA, Gadson went on to have numerous successful years of coaching on the high school level impacting and changing the lives of countless young men.
:05-To help keep the conversation in balance, the crew was joined by Margo Hinton. Hall of Fame basketball star out of IUP and the first woman to play in the nationally recognized Connie Hawkins League. And the answer to your question is yes!!! She could play with anybody, anytime, anywhere. Hinton, whose talents also include writing music, poetry and rapping. That, of course, is when she’s not teaching middle school students and hosting her own podcast.
:04-Of course C-Live team member Alexis Cobb was on stage with her considerable sports and verbal skills. And is the only one of us who has the definitive answer to most questions of issues, because she is both an attorney with Cobb Counsel and also a sports agent representing numerous professional athletes. Most importantly, she brings to the conversation a strong and unyielding position about the sports world that very few women in the business does.
:03-Needless to say, the show is not a show without sports and baseball historian Wayne Moody. Once a member of the Mets organization on the way up in the MLB ladder before injury, Moody brings a matter-offact /having been there po-
:01-We want to thank the entire “Champions Live” team for their great and nonstop commitment to sports talk excellence. First and foremost, Ken Ogilvie, who serves as Master of Many Talents. Aside from co-hosting the show for nearly “20 years” with worldly expert opinion, given his travels as a worldclass photographer, he double downs as sound man and video man, with his fabulous wife Judy, without whom the show would not go on, and of course as “photo-2-man.” We also want to thank our good friend and all-around sports professional, Vince Butts, for his matter-of-fact and on point weekly commentary. This year we owe everything to our new best friend, Mr. Rob Piedra, who brought a new level of genius to the operation that allowed us to put our show on the map globally, unlike ever before. And last, but not least, our thanks go out to our many guests and fans who attended the show, our sponsors:
UPMC, the New Pittsburgh Courier, Goodrich and Geist, Judge Dwayne Woodruff, Atty. Shawn Flaherty, Atty. Alexis Cobb, Atty. Jack Goodrich and Associates, Diversified Municipal Service, OSA Global Security, The Office of the Chief Exec. Allegheny County, and House of Law Funeral Home. Needless to say, a thousand thanks to Ms. Vicky’s Soul Grill and Q&M Restaurant Services for their time, support, space and hard work! :00-Game over....’til Jan. 2024! See you then.
