Dear DPSCD families, We had a momentous 2018-2019 school year and have successfully completed year two in the District’s transformation process. To review this year’s work, we rolled out a new reading and math curriculum aligned to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for students in grades K-8. We made improvements in absenteeism and suspensions with the revised code of conduct, and expanded our art, music and physical education programs at each school. In addition, we expanded the Cultural Passport program enabling all K-5 students to participate in three field trips to Detroit area museums and landmarks while broadening the Career Pathways program with a robust partnership between Wayne County Community College District, which offers students 27 industry-aligned dual enrollment courses. Thank you for supporting Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) by staying engaged with your student’s learning path and school staff who are working hard to implement new resources to make this transformation successful. Attendance is crucial for students in building a strong foundation for learning in and out of the classroom. To support our families and students with resources, we have implemented attendance agents at every school to ensure our students stay on track. In addition, we will continue building the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), encouraging parent-teacher home visits, and providing relevant Parent Academy courses for families. Looking ahead to the next school year, we anticipate celebrating many more milestones as your student(s) embarks on a new grade level. The 2019-2020 school year will bring a new curriculum aligned to grade level expectations for students in grades 9-12, an expansion of Career Pathways, an intentional focus on culture from the Central Office to the classroom, and a more concentrated focus on school culture and achievement improvements. To provide families with more options, the District will open four new schools in the fall, and the Academy of the Americas grades K-3 will relocate near the Konkel Street building, please see the listing on the second page. In addition, all new school updates will be posted on detroitk12.org throughout the summer. If you are interested in learning more about DPSCD’s offerings, I encourage you to visit detroitk12.org. I look forward to the continuation of rebuilding the District with your support and making decisions in the best interest of our students and families. Please have a safe and enjoyable summer. Sincerely,

Dr. Nikolai Vitti, Ed.D. Superintendent Detroit Public Schools Community District

Outstanding Achievement

DPSCD Implements New Curriculum DPSCD is implementing new curriculum aligned to grade level expectations district-wide! Students in grades 9-12 are beginning a new State Standards aligned curricula in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics this fall. In addition, curricula were also adopted for science and social studies. K-12 students can also expect a new STEM and Social Studies Plan, which includes the first ever Detroit History Curriculum for K-8 students. DPSCD is committed to expanding enrichment opportunities in extra curriculars such as National Society of Black Engineers, Robotics, First Lego League and more. Lastly, our early childhood program will begin its highly praised, research-based curriculum for pre-kindergarten students. For more information, visit detroitk12.org/curriculum.

Grades 9-12 English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics The Office of Curriculum and Instruction convened a committee of high school teachers and leaders, as well as hosted Curriculum Chats with families throughout the community for the new high school ELA and Mathematics curricula. The Board approved myPerspectives curriculum (ELA) and CPM Educational Program (mathematics), which will be implemented this school year.

Science In 2015, Michigan adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), known as the new Michigan Science Standards (MSS). We shifted the learning away from being 8

solely focused on content to a new method of teaching and learning that focuses on 3-Dimensional Learning (science and engineering Practices, Disciplinary Core Ideas and Cross Cutting Concepts). With these new and improved standards comes a new M-STEP Science Assessment. Students are now “figuring out” science opposed to simply memorizing the science that others have discovered.

Detroit History The Detroit History Curriculum launched for K-5 students in February 2019. The Office of Social Studies worked with District teachers and local partners to develop standards aligned units, focused on Detroit’s history and the city’s future. Each unit aligns to grade level standards while teaching students about Detroit’s rich history and culture.

Pre-Kindergarten More than 20 early childhood educators convened to investigate, navigate, and consider the best curriculum choice for Detroit Public Schools Community District early learners. After much consideration, the Board of Education moved forward with selecting Creative Curriculum, a research-based curriculum that focuses on developmentally appropriate content and skills that contribute to children’s later development. Pre-K students will begin the new curriculum in fall 2019.

Let’s Read DPSCD has raised a sense of urgency for building a strong culture of literacy within each of its schools and throughout the city with the Let’s Read program, sparked by long-time community activist Helen Moore who partnered with the District to rally support for its early learners with the help of community volunteers. Let’s Read supports struggling readers in grades K-3 determined by diagnostic assessments performed by teachers. The District’s new English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum includes a daily focus on individual reading goals and targeted small group instruction. Because of our strong focus on meeting each child’s specific reading needs, our teachers are developing Individual Reading Improvement Plans (IRIP) for all students, even those who are showing proficiency in reading. Let’s Read volunteers are trained and work with assigned K-3 students to build the foundational skills of literacy. To foster an environment where children can view reading as a life-long, empowering process, students choose their own books based on their interests. Volunteers then assist with reading and tracking student progress in their DPSCD Let’s Read planner. For more information and to volunteer please visit, detroitk12.org/letsread.

Facts About the Michigan Read by Grade Three Law: • In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed the Read by Grade Three Law to ensure students exit third grade at or above reading grade level. • Starting in the year 2019-2020, if a child is reading below grade level at the end of 3rd grade, parents will be informed in writing that their child will not be promoted to 4th grade unless he/she qualifies for an exemption. • All K-3 students are assessed at the beginning, middle and end of the school year. • Michigan school districts will provide regular written communication with parents of K-3 students with reading difficulties. • For more information, visit detroitk12.org/curriculum.

The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project is designed to develop a leadership pipeline for young men utilizing school-based and community mentors and role models through various methods of support such as themed weekly meetings, a monthly speaker series, community service projects, and college access support. Currently six DPSCD Schools are participating. Additional school chapters will be launched during the 2019-2020 school year. Activities include visiting college campuses, museum tours, urban gardening, and participating in leadership summits. Weekly sessions reinforce the importance of brotherhood and leadership inside and outside the classroom. Our speaker series connects our scholars with successful men from various professions such as authors, doctors, activists, and local entrepreneurs. Program participants also learn about various life skills such as financial literacy, time management, and personal branding, which enhances their leadership skills. Participating Schools High Schools • Central High School • Southeastern High School • Pershing High School Elementary-Middle Schools • Durfee Elementary-Middle School • Mackenzie Elementary-Middle School For more information or to become a Role Model, contact Brett Jordan at brett.jordan@detroitk12.org

Expect Respect After careful consideration of the on-going feedback from families and schools, the District has revised its Student Code of Conduct and will launch the Expect Respect program designed to exercise the District’s core values and raise antibullying awareness. Expect Respect will involve staff, students and families as they pledge to uphold the core values and exercise character traits embodying respect and positive behavior. Stay tuned for more information.

On Time, Every Day, All Day Attendance is one of the District’s top priorities, we know when students are in school on time, every day they will rise. To help families, attendance agents were placed in every school to provide support through resources and counseling. Agents meet with families in the beginning of the year to ensure students understand the expectations. Reminders are below.

Attendance Expectations

• Students are expected to attend all classes each day. • Students are expected to be on time for each class during the school day.

• Students are to remain in school the entire school day. • Students are expected to maintain a ninety-six percent (96%) attendance rate.

• The District complies with the Michigan Compulsory School Law, which states that all students between the ages of six (6) and sixteen (16) are to attend school during the entire school year.

• Notify the school regarding your child’s absence • Send a note regarding the reason for the absence when your child returns to school.

• A note should be received within three (3) days of your child’s return to the school.

• Make sure that all make-up work is completed and returned to the teacher.

Professional Development Gives Teachers the Best in-class Teaching Tools Continuous professional development, growth and opportunity for our educators and administrators are crucial to ensure our educators remain engaged and flourish in their careers. Relevant Professional Development aligned with standards in the curriculum enhances teachers’ instructional practices. Every year, DPSCD hosts its annual district-wide professional development day, Rise Up. In 2018, more than 3,000 teachers and leaders gathered at Cobo Hall to hear from thought-leaders and learn new best practices that can drive student achievement. The energy and excitement throughout the day made one thing clear DPSCD educators are engaged, passionate, and committed to educating and empowering all students in our District. This was a day of celebration, as 94 percent of teachers shared that they felt celebrated and appreciated. To learn more about career opportunities with DPSCD, visit detroitk12.org/careers.

Hydration Stations

Parent Resources

All DPSCD schools now have hydration stations installed in each building. The hydration stations feature cooled, filtered water along with a bottle filling station. The bottle fillers provide convenient hydration for students and staff with a rapid fill of filtered water. This allows students and staff to have access to cool, safe, filtered water while in class. All students will receive a water bottle during the 20192020 school year. On October 9, 2018, Dr. Vitti and the Board announced its long-term solution to provide clean drinking water for all students and staff throughout the District with the installation of filtered water hydration systems after elevated levels of lead and or copper was detected in a third of our schools. Out of an abundance of caution, drinking water was turned off in all schools. We are committed to providing safe and healthy learning environments to students, staff and families. We thank our business partners that supported our long-term solution. Please visit detroitk12.org/ drinking-water for updates and a full list of our partners.

Parent Teacher Home Visit Program: “It’s About the Kids” By Brittney Williams The roll out of DPSCD’s Parent Teacher Home Visit Program (PTHVP) took Tiffany Kirksey completely by surprise. “I was shocked,” she says. “I hadn’t heard of teachers doing home visits since way back when I was in school.”

about the program’s purpose and its goals, helped to lessen those fears. In particular, many parents became more open to participating once they knew that the visits can be held at the park, library, or even a local restaurant in addition to the home, just somewhere off-site from the school.

For more information on PTHVP, please contact the Office of Family and Community Engagement by phone 313-873-7490 or by email parent.acdemy@detroitk12.org

Tiffany’s three children all attend Nolan, where they are star students. Much of their success is owed to their parents’ unique engagement with the school. Tiffany is an involved volunteer at Nolan as a Parent Action Leader (PAL, a parent volunteer that works to engage other parents), and the children’s father, Keith Tye, is an employee with the district as a custodian. They were among the first to find out about the program, and quickly agreed to participate.

When asked to sum up their experience with the PTHVP in one word, Tiffany chose “Awesome.” Keith’s word was “Excellent.” The parents shared that the program has resulted in better communication with their children’s teachers, stronger relationships with them, and increased As part of her PAL role, she was asked awareness of what to help recruit parent participants for is going on in their the PTHVP. A lot of the parents she children’s classrooms. talked to were uncomfortable with the “My advice to parents idea of opening their homes. Others is to give the program a worried that the PTHVP was really about chance; just check it out,” investigating parents, not engaging with Keith says. “Because it’s not them. However, providing clearer details about us, it’s about the kids.”
