Virgie Rollins: What a life

How a true Michigan political power broker made her mark

The Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in downtown Detroit was placed on a day-long lockdown Monday after a man with a gun tried to enter the building. The man, described as a white male in a suit, left the building before being apprehended and was still at large at press time. Both Larned Street and Jefferson between Woodward and Randolph were closed due to the lockdown. In an x-ray image made available to the media, what appears to be a gun, described as a 38 caliber, can be seen in what looks like a backpack that was brought into the security screening checkpoint in the Municipal Center. Detroit Police Chief Robert Craig alluded to the image when addressing reporters on the situation Monday afternoon. “I'm sure by now you have images of the package that was x-rayed that depicts what appears to be a 38 revolver, a short barrel, probably a two-inch .38. We are still looking for a person of interest. We have not located him as of yet,” he said. Craig mentioned that this may not be an attempted crime, but just a mistake made by a concealed pistol license holder. “It certainly could have been a concealed pistol license holder who got through security not knowing this is a gun-free zone. That’s why I stressed early in my remarks that this is not an active shooter situation. There are no threats against anyone,” he explained. Craig also said that there is another situation involving the shutdown that may not be connected to the person of interest. “I talked a little bit about it earlier, a domestic situation. A person may have run a threat. But absolutely not sure if it’s connected to this,” he said. The Municipal Center was evacuated and remained closed all day Monday. “All elected officials are out of the building, the staff from the mayor’s office have been evacuated,” the chief informed reporters. He believes the person of interest is out of the building due to a delay in the reporting of the gun at the security checkpoint. “If I had to guess, he’s probably out. Again, there was a delay in the reporting, so he was probably alerted to the finding and got out,” he said. The delay in reporting the issue between agencies, from the private security agency that runs the checkpoint to the Detroit Police Department to the Wayne County Sheriff’s deputies, was a subject the chief was concerned about. “DPD was not notified for at least 45 minutes. The security officer didn’t respond immediately. I’m not certain that when you see an image like that going through an x-ray machine, just like going through the airport, there

You might think you have stories to tell. You might even think you have met or worked with some pretty important people in your time. Got that picture of you and soand-so on the mantle in the living room above the fireplace, framed just right, so that whoever comes in the house will be sure to see that you know certain people. “Look, there I am with…” You need to stop. Just…stop. Because of Virgie Rollins. Have you ever heard of Virgie Rollins? There’s a good chance you probably haven’t, so don’t feel bad. She admits to a preference for keeping herself more in the background. But all those Big Name folks whose names you see in the paper on a regular basis? You’d best believe they know Virgie Rollins. And Virgie Rollins knows them. All of them. Matter of fact, she has their personal cell phone numbers. All of them. No, not just the mayor or city council, although they certainly rank high enough on the local scene. But think bigger. For example, take a look at that picture of

Virgie Rollins with her husband, Michael, and President Barack Obama at her Palmer Woods home. President Barack Obama speaking to a small crowd assembled on her front lawn. And then the one of her “hanging out” with First Lady Michelle Obama on the night that Obama was first elected. Or how

tant to Dr. Ivery and president emeritus of Washtenaw Community College, will facilitate the work of the task force.

WCCCD launches 50th Anniversary Blue Ribbon Leadership Task Force Task force to review operations and report to the public

A national leadership perspective has been added to the Wayne County Community College District’s forward-looking planning with the creation of the 50th Anniversary Blue Ribbon Leadership Task Force, WCCCD Chancellor Curtis L. Ivery announced recently. Comprised of nationally-recognized community college leaders, as well as local educational, business and governmental leaders, the task force will review the college’s operations and report their observations to the public. The WCCCD leadership will “open the books” to the task force members, inviting them to do an in-depth review of all District operations including the financial management of the District. The task force will be asked to report to the public their assessment of WCCCD’s history of

WCCCD Chancellor Curtis L. Ivery clean financial audits, upgraded bond ratings, endorsement of accreditation agencies, investment in needed new programs and services, transformation of the District’s facilities, dramatically increased student enrollment, maintenance of a sustainable ratio of full-time to part-time staff, and the transparency of its financial accounting. Dr. Gunder Myran, a longtime senior consul-

The theme of WCCCD’s 50th anniversary is “Celebrating Our Heritage, Designing Bold Future Pathways.” “The celebration of our 50th anniversary,” said Chancellor Ivery, “is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the past and also provides a dramatic platform from which to launch a number of bold strategic projects that will shape the future of WCCCD.” The Blue Ribbon Leadership Task Force will play a significant role in designing WCCCD’s future by recommending strategic redesign and improvement projects based on their assessment of current operations. The 50th Anniversary Blue Ribbon Leadership Task Force is the second such group formed by Chancellor Ivery. Dr. Ivery recruited the first Blue Ribbon Leadership Task Force in 2002 as WCCCD was beginning its “Pathways to the Future” initiative to transform the District’s

programs, services, facilities, learning and information technologies, and finances. This task force was also made up of national community college leaders and local leaders. The 2002 task force was charged with providing an independent, objective, and in-depth public assessment of WCCCD’s past, present and future health, particularly as it related to financial and personnel matters. The 2002 Blue Ribbon Leadership Task Force report contained eight major recommendations which served as guidelines for improving the operations of the college. Those recommendations were: focus on future plans, revitalize the leadership team, create a new image, develop a strong communication/ marketing program, move to a multi-college structure, implement a stronger suburban strategy, place new emphasis on career education, and establish safeguards to assure strict accountability and transparency for financial integrity.
